YOU

editor’s letter / Issue 162 / FEBRUARY 2017

All systems go! So, with another Christmas and New Year done and dusted, 2017 has well and truly kicked in. We’re back in gear after the festive break, and it already feels like there’s lots going on in Cardiff, with plenty of exciting stuff to look forward to. There’s our pick of the season’s must-see arts events, with cutting-edge drama, top-notch stand-up, exhilarating music and more – diaries at the ready, culture vultures. We’re back in Pontcanna too, extolling the virtues, boutiquey allure and suburban charms of CF11 – turn to page 12 for our latest report. Rugby, of course, is never far from our thoughts. With the Six Nations almost upon us, we focus on the increasingly popular women’s game, as Wales Women’s star fly-half Elinor Snowsill looks ahead to what will hopefully be an exciting championship. And excitement is also building for this year’s Cardiff Life Awards (City Hall, 16 March – see cardifflifeawards.co.uk), celebrating the best of local businesses. Nominations close on 27 January, so if you haven’t yet done yours, get to it – good luck!

SEVEN DEADLY SINS

“You missed a bit...”

Our occasional Q&A with visiting or local performers – this month, comedian JOSIE LONG bares her wicked soul… LUST: What or who do you find yourself lusting after today? I’ve been away from my boyfriend for a while and I really miss him, but it’s translated into looking at pictures of Ernest Hemingway all grizzled and topless. I’m really not proud of this. GREED: What should you be cutting down on (non-food and drink)? Twitter. It’s the worst, but I can’t stop looking at it. GLUTTONY: What single thing could you happily eat or drink all day long? I could drink coconut water every single day and never get bored of it. Some people seem to really hate it. Those people are incorrect. SLOTH: What should you really be putting your back into right now? I really meant to get fit before Christmas but I’ve been taking a new approach of not doing any exercise whatsoever. WRATH: What/who makes you angry? A push button shower at the gym. It demeans us all. We can all turn a tap on and off. That and the brutality of our government towards people with the least. But also the shower thing. ENVY: Who are you jealous of? Adele, because she’s such a powerhouse and such a natural, and she smashes everything she does out of the park. PRIDE: Proudest achievement? This isn’t funny, sorry, but setting up Arts Emergency (arts-emergency.org) is the thing I’m most proud of. We help support people who don’t come from privilege to pursue the lives and careers they really want to, and it’s brilliant. Josie Long plays Cardiff’s Clwb Ifor Bach on 12 & 13 February. EVERYONE’S TALKING ABOUT...

THE BARRACK LANE MURAL Local artists stun Cardiff shoppers with a giant new piece of street art Cardiff’s Barrack Lane retail quarter, in the heart of the city, has been given a fresh new look, thanks to a collaboration by local artists Sam Worthington and Helen Bur (from arts collective Modern Alchemists), who work under the aliases ‘Wasp Elder’ and ‘HB’. Linc Cymru, the not-for-profit organisation providing affordable housing, social care and health care services across South Wales, and which owns and manages the Barrack Lane development, commissioned the artists to create a bespoke mural to help bring the wall to life. Measuring an impressive 120 square metres, and using more than 70 litres of

paint, the mural took a week to complete and features the colourful depiction of an elderly man in a striped jumper, tenderly holding a miniature house. “When we’ve had empty units at Barrack Lane, we have often given them over to local artists to house short-term exhibits, and we have taken an active part in some of the city’s visual art projects,” said Linc’s development director Louise Attwood. “The new mural is a natural extension of this for us and we are inviting other artists or organisations that could add to the area’s unique feel and sense of place to make contact with us and share their ideas.” For more: linc-cymru.co.uk

A MAN’S WORLD

MY WIFE WILL BE THE FIRST TO TELL YOU THAT I’M MATURELY IMMATURE

RHYS WILLIAMS Ou r ma n at Ca rdif f Blues

AGE CONCERN Rhys reckons he might be getting old...

I

n 2017, I will turn 37. Yes, I know what you’re thinking: “He doesn’t look it.” Daily use of moisturiser and my reluctance to tackle has maintained my youthful looks! But it has certainly got me thinking about when you actually do get old. Looking back to those heady years of my youth, the thought of being 37 and middle-aged seemed like a lifetime away. But has it snuck up on me? I will always remember first coming into the Cardiff RFC squad and speaking to legendary Blue and Blacks full-back Mike Rayer, my mentor. In the twilight of his career, the man who now has a Cardiff alldayer named after him told me how my life as a player would go by in a flash, and that in no time I would be stood in his boots. And while injury prematurely ended my playing career, here I am entering my late 30s and contemplating whether or not I am old. But the only conclusion I come to is... no. Well, not yet, anyway.

People generally say that you are as old as you feel, and many of us will obviously try to hang onto our youth as long as we can. I still feel like I’m in my late 20s, and my wife will be the first to tell you that I’m maturely immature. I still enjoy a bit of banter too much to overly worry about getting old. But a lot has changed since I was in my 20s. I’m married and have a daughter, so my priorities are definitely different, but I still enjoy most of the things I did when I was younger. So, is that point, the crossroads between being young and old, still to come? Or is it a slow transition? Looking at some of the telltale signs of growing old, I think I’m faring pretty well. Fortunately, I haven’t had any grey hair, and I’ve had a receding hairline since my early 20s – I like to think my fivehead is a measure of my intelligence! I can confirm, however, that there are certainly growth spurts of hair in other areas [Thanks for that mental image – Ed].

All you blokes reading this will know exactly what I mean. What else? Well, I haven’t switched from Radio 1 to Radio 2, and of course I still listen to Capital FM. Do I feel stiffness and groan when I bend down? Yes, but that’s been the case for goodness knows how many years, thanks to life as a rugby player – hence my need to take up yoga. Another tell-tale sign is driving more slowly, but I’m still pretty quick out of the blocks and have retained that competitive edge. Do I keep losing my glasses? I don’t wear any. Do I do crosswords? No. Am I on social media? Yes. So, all good! But then it all comes crashing down when I pick up a Cardiff Blues matchday programme and realise I am old enough to be the father of some of our younger players... My conclusion? I will continue to feel young until the day I feel old. Rhys Williams is sales and marketing director at Cardiff Blues. For more, see cardiffblues.com

PONTCANNA,

WE LOVE YOU! 9 good reasons to visit Cardiff’s charming, well-heeled Victorian suburb By K AT I E K I SSOON

BAKERY BRØD IS A LITTLE TASTE OF DENMARK, RIGHT IN THE HEART OF CARDIFF

ndependent boutiques, great cafés, treelined streets, lots of open parkland and a great community spirit – little wonder that this handsome, leafy suburb is one of Cardiff ’s most sought-after areas. So, Pontcanna, how much do we love thee? Let us count the ways...

IT’S AS PRETTY AS A PICTURE

From the Victorian mansions on Cathedral Road and the grand sweep of Plasturton Avenue, with its lovely communal gardens, to little two-storey terraces and pastel-coloured villas fronted by pretty gardens, the architecture here is both eclectic and attractive: it’s not surprising that the property market is more buoyant than ever. And its open spaces are breathtaking – there’s nothing quite like a gentle stroll over the open parklands of Llandaff Fields and Pontcanna Fields, lined with beautiful mature horse chestnut and lime trees. 

STREET LIFE style barbecue food, such as its signature slowsmoked beef brisket, while bistro/lounge The Cameo Club, established in the 1960s, is still going strong too, offering all-day eating and drinking. The ever-popular Fish at 85 also continues to thrive – pick your fish from the counter and the chef will prepare it just as you like it. Over on Romilly Crescent are more local gems: French-influenced contemporary fare at Bully’s; fine dining at Arbennig (and its more casual Emporium next door, serving cooked breakfasts, coffee, cakes etc); and cosy coffee shop and bakery Brød, with freshly-baked Danish pastries, breads and savouries to eat in or take away – a little taste of Denmark in the heart of Cardiff. Over on Kings Road, Kemi’s Cafe is another local favourite, with colourful fusion foods and salads, and handmade desserts and cakes.

THERE’S A CRACKING PAIR OF DELIS, TOO More indulgent, top-notch fare for stocking up the fridge – new on Pontcanna Street is Al Ponte, selling Welsh and European produce, wines, cheeses, charcuterie and more, while Canna Deli on Kings Road also stocks artisan cheese, awardwinning Welsh produce and fine food. w

YOU DON’T NEED A CAR

With the city centre just an easy, level and attractive walk or cycle away, you’d be a fool to drive. Just head down Cathedral Road, take a side turning and you’ll find yourself in Sophia Gardens and beautiful Bute Park, skirting the Taff, with the Castle looming ahead.

IT’S BOUTIQUEY AND LOCAL

With the likes of contemporary fashion boutique Kiti, plus one-stop unisex hair and beauty destination Belle Toujours and popular hair salon Goji, you’ve got all you need to look your very best. And for interiors inspiration, Beti Biggs sells all manner of unusual and eclectic homeware, furniture and gifts, while interior designers Chameleon Interiors have successfully been doing their thing for happy clients for years. Then there’s the little run of functional but essential shops at the top of Cathedral Road – popular family butcher Driscolls, for example, with its excellent free range and organic meats, is a draw for discerning carnivores from all around; and Bant A La Cart deli and bakery, selling all manner of melting toasties, homemade pastries and an unrivalled selection of cheeses.

PONTCANNA’S

BOUTIQUES AND SALONS HAVE ALL YOU NEED TO LOOK YOUR VERY BEST

THERE’S NO SHORTAGE OF PLACES TO EAT AND DRINK

Foodies are truly spoilt for choice here. Café Brava is a local institution, particularly good for breakfast or brunch – the hefty brunch burrito (chorizo or mushrooms with scrambled eggs, roasted peppers, cheese and salsa) is Cardiff Life’s tried and trusted hangover cure. STREET LIFE

The view down Pontcanna Street

YOU’LL NEVER STRUGGLE FOR A DECENT FLAT WHITE...

There are plenty of places to get a good coffee around here, but our favourites are Lufkin Coffee on Kings Road, which hand-roasts its own beans in small batches (good handmade cakes, too!), and KIN+ILK on Cathedral Road, which sources its own direct trade house roast, Finca El Izoté, with distinctive notes of caramel and molasses. The latter has become a real community and creative hub since opening last year, too.

Mocha and choc brownie at KIN+ILK? Don’t mind if we do...

...OR A GOOD BEER

In addition to established boozers such as The Cricketers and Y Mochyn Du, Pontcanna is also lucky enough to have its own artisan microbrewery, Pipes, which makes the most incredible craft ales, from Baltic Porter Espresso to smoked lager, available at its various events on-site or at various bars and venues across the city. Gorgeously packaged, too.

FAMOUS PEOPLE HAVE LIVED HERE

James ‘Manic Street Preachers’ Bradfield can often be seen walking his dog in Llandaff Fields, but arguably the most famous resident was Welsh composer, actor and entertainer Ivor Novello, one of the most important figures in 20th century British theatre – as the prominent bronze of him just outside Wales Millennium Centre attests.

IT HAS INTRIGUING BORDERS

Head north and you’ll be in villagey Llandaff, with its cathedral, galleries, shops and restaurants, including very popular Italian-inspired eatery Porro. Go south and there’s Riverside, with its abundance of Chinese and Indian restaurants (amongst others), plus Riverside Community Market Association’s (RCMA) weekly Farmers’ Market (Sunday, 10am-2pm), which is now widely recognised as one of the key attractions in the Welsh capital. Then there’s Canton, of course, with multi-artform cultural venue Chapter, art gallery/ cafe Arteas, eateries such as La Cuina, Purple Poppadom, Chez Francis, and more – just a short walk from Pontcanna’s genteel streets. 16 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

RUGBY

Snowsill in action for Wales against UK Armed Forces Women

T On the

BALL For star fly-half ELINOR SNOWSILL, calling Cardiff the home of Wales Women this season is a dream come true

20 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

he game of rugby has afforded Elinor Snowsill many opportunities. Recently, for example, she was in Barbados competing with several Olympians in an invitational sevens tournament. But though she admits she has been privileged to travel to the Caribbean and similarly exotic locations thanks to her rugby talents, there is one particular piece of hallowed turf that has perhaps brought the greatest joy of her playing career. “I was over the moon when it was announced that the BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park was going to be the home of Wales Women this season,” exclaims the 27-year-old, who was raised in Cardiff. “I’ve been playing for Wales for quite a few seasons now, and it’s always been my ambition to see us playing in the capital. It’ll ensure we get a good crowd down, and we’ll be playing on a fantastic pitch which lends itself to a good style of rugby.” Indeed, the highlight of Snowsill’s autumn was steering Wales to convincing victories against Scotland and the UK Armed Forces on that familiar blue and green pitch, shortly after the Arms Park had been unveiled as their new ground. It’s a factor that could have a significant bearing on their upcoming Six Nations campaign, when they welcome World Cup holders England and semi-finalists Ireland to the capital. In a stroke of logistical magic, Wales Women will play those home fixtures on the same weekends in February and March that the men face their English and Irish counterparts next door at Principality Stadium. “You can’t expect people to travel upwards of

an hour on an international weekend to watch us play, when they also have tickets to watch the men play at the Principality Stadium,” says Snowsill. “It works so well that supporters can watch us in the morning, then walk just two minutes up Westgate Street to watch the men. “By bringing Wales Women’s fixtures to the city on the same weekends as the men’s game, we want to capitalise on the [matchday] energy and attract and foster new audiences for the fantastic team that we have. For some, it might also be a chance to blow the cobwebs away from the night before and watch some superb rugby!” Snowsill, who was educated at Ysgol Plasmawr in Fairwater, knows better than many the challenges posed by England and Ireland. As fly-half for the table-topping Bristol Ladies, she counts among her teammates several of both countries’ leading players, including England’s Sarah Hunter, who was recently named World Rugby Player of the Year. “I love playing against England, particularly because I’ve grown up playing against a lot of them with the U20s and so forth,” she says. “It’s always really competitive. When you’re playing against people you know, you raise your game. If they’re running at you, there’s more at stake if you know them and there’s no way you can let them get past you.” One man helping to drive Snowsill to the next level is former Cardiff player Nick Wakley, who joined Wales Women last year as part of the new coaching staff headed up by Rowland Phillips. “Elinor has been an influential player since I came in,” says Wakley. “She’s confident in her kicking and passing game, and that’s vitally important for a player in her position with regards to game management.” Snowsill herself sees this season as being a new and exciting chapter for Wales Women. “We took a step forward in each game during the autumn, so hopefully in the Six Nations we can start from there and keep building. It’s like a fresh start for us.” Tickets for Wales Women’s Six Nations fixtures against England Women (Saturday 11 February, 11:30am) and Ireland Women (Saturday 11 March, 11:30am) at the BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park are priced at £15 (seated) and £10 (terraced) – £5 for children under 16 – for each match, and can be purchased at wru.wales/tickets, or in person from the WRU Ticket Office

“I love playing against England,” says Elinor. “It’s always really competitive”

Sweet Charity By Dr Caroline Pascoe, Headmistress of Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls

T

he happiest people are the ones who make others happy. Throughout Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls’ 125year history, staff have instilled this vital life lesson into our pupils’ hearts and minds. Achieving top academic results and shining in sport and the arts are always high up on an HMSG girl’s list of priorities. But, equally important to her, will be finding ways to support less fortunate people, both close to home and further afield. From cake sales to full-scale variety shows, the school is always planning for its next opportunity to make a difference. We have put on musical extravaganzas in aid of Children in Need since 1984, raising more than £50,000 for the cause in that time. Our latest Pudsey-inspired gala saw children from Year 7 to Sixth Form take to the stage to deliver a colourful array of dances, vocal performances and instrumental pieces. Thanks to ticket sales,

a raffle and an auction, generous parents helped us to raise £4,000 for the charity. Locally, a group of Sixth Formers have joined forces with boys at Monmouth School to volunteer at a Newport-based organisation which provides food and furniture for people in need throughout the region. As well as fundraising for Raven House Trust, the pupils regularly work at the branch, helping to make and distribute food parcels. Hands-on, worthwhile work like this puts things into perspective for our girls and makes them appreciate how fortunate they are. Our adventurous expedition to India in the summer holidays gave 22 HMSG girls and 18 Monmouth School boys the incredible opportunity to change lives on another continent. They spent a week acclimatising in Burua, working at the Upper Valley School, which I established in 1997. A sparkling new paint job was the result of their hard work and preceded a mammoth high-altitude trek in the Himalayan foothills.

Acts of kindness like this, combined with year-round fundraising, create humble, wellrounded girls, motivated to make a positive impact on the world when they leave us.

Yep, time to get the diaries out again – here’s our pick of this season’s unmissable live arts performances

F

rom contemporary drama to full-on dance, cracking comedy to spine-tingling music, Cardiff has another thrilling, rip-roaring season of live arts in prospect. Here are the 11 must-see shows that have got us really excited...

By H UG O BA L L MATTHEW BOURNE: THE RED SHOES 14-18 March

Based on the Academy Award-winning movie by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, and the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, The Red Shoes has inspired generations of dancers with its intoxicating tale of obsession, possession and one girl’s dream to be the greatest dancer in the world. This magical adaptation by acclaimed British choreographer Matthew Bourne is set to a new score arranged by Terry Davies, using the mesmeric music of golden-age Hollywood composer, Bernard Herrmann (most famous for his collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles), with lavish set and costume designs by Lez Brotherston. Prepare to have your senses dazzled, and your heart broken. Wales Millennium Centre; wmc.org.uk

SUE PERKINS 26 February

Promising an evening full of sparkling wit, tall tales and “a user’s guide to Mary Berry”, Sue Perkins’ new show, Live! In Spectacles, will no doubt contain oodles of her usual fun, charm and quick quips. As one half of double act Mel and Sue, host of shows such as Insert Name Here and Spelling Bee, and a regular on Have I Got News For You, Just a Minute, QI, The News Quiz and that baking show on the BBC, she’s become a bit of a national treasure. Based on her best-selling memoir, Spectacles, this’ll probably sell out quicker than Paul Hollywood’s hot cakes. No doubt she’ll have a few choice words to say about him, too... ARTS

CAMILLE O’SULLIVAN 23 March

Back in town with her new show, The Carny Dream, the singer and actress is one of Ireland’s most exciting performers, with a formidable international reputation, gained for dramatic interpretations of songs by Brel, Waits, Bowie, Nick Cave, Radiohead and others. As much a storyteller as a singer, she’s a chameleon-like presence on stage, with exhilarating, spine-tingling performances that veer between utterly heart-rending and downright mischievous. Inspired by the strange, magical, dark and light world of the circus, The Carny Dream promises to be quite the carousel ride. St David’s Hall; stdavidshallcardiff.co.uk

THE XX

17 March The xx’s just-released, much-anticipated third album, I See You, sees them utilising a more outward-looking and expansive approach. It finds the usually insular trio at arguably their boldest yet, performing with more clarity and ambition than ever before. “The record sounds triumphant and celebratory,” says the band’s Jamie Smith, aka Jamie xx, and he’s not wrong. Marked by a tonal shift to something approaching pure, crisp pop, it’s adorned with spine-tingling crescendos, and lead single On Hold is a real standout – a certified pop banger, if ever there was one. You won’t want to miss this, trust us. Motorpoint Arena; livenation.co.uk

THE FAR SIDE OF THE MOON 23-25 March

Following his sell-out success with Needles and Opium at London’s Barbican last year, internationally-renowned director and performer Robert Lepage brings another of his acclaimed plays to Cardiff. This visually stunning production tells the story of two estranged brothers brought together by their mother’s death: Phillipe, an introvert philosopher, looking to the stars for meaning in the universe, and his successful sibling, Andre, who takes a much more pragmatic view on interplanetary mysteries. Drawing parallels between their fraternal bitterness and the competition between the Soviets and Americans during the space race, it’s Lepage at his brilliant best – a beautiful, enigmatic and witty one-man show, performed by Yves Jacques and punctuated by Laurie Anderson’s otherworldly score. KILLOLOGY

24 March – 8 April Sherman Theatre’s artistic director Rachel O’Riordan and leading UK playwright Gary Owen, creators of the multi-award-winning Iphigenia In Splott, return with the highly-anticipated Killology, a brutal and bruising new co-production with the Royal Court, London. In the play itself, a controversial new gaming experience – marketed by its millionaire creator as a “deeply moral experience” – is inspiring a generation. As players live out their darkest fantasies, they are rewarded for torturing victims and score points for ‘creativity’ – but there are consequences, naturally... Sherman Theatre; shermantheatre.co.uk

RICKY GERVAIS 6-7 March

Gervais’ stock is high, following his recent David Brent movie – based on his popular character from The Office, of course – and sold-out gigs with Foregone Conclusion, his fictional band from the film. His new stand-up show, Humanity, promises routines on ‘species realignment’ and er, dogs having jobs. Having already got a string of warm-up shows under his belt, he’s described the new show as “me moaning about everything in the world, from the most privileged position imaginable”. With all the political shenanigans currently going on – Brexit, Trump etc – you’d imagine there’s plenty of material for the inimitable loudmouth to get those sharp-looking teeth into. Motorpoint Arena; livenation.co.uk

BRIDGET CHRISTIE 25 April

The UK have voted to leave the EU, even though no-one had a plan for what would happen if it did. If you didn’t want to leave the EU, or you did, but now you don’t, because you haven’t got any of the things you were promised, then this is absolutely the show for you. If you did want to leave the EU, and still do, then you will still find it funny, but for different reasons, as you witness – it says here – “the liberal female comedian’s exasperated and despairing meltdown.” If you enjoyed Christie’s brilliantly funny feminist memoir, A Book For Her, you’ll love this. NORTHERN BALLET: CASANOVA 25-29 April

Leeds-based Northern Ballet, a powerhouse of inventive dance, bring history’s most notorious lover to life with this new full-length ballet, transporting audiences to decadent 18th century Venice to tell the story of the infamous Italian adventurer. Consumed by his desires, the fiercely intellectual Giacomo Casanova leads a controversial life, dabbling in careers as a scam artist, violinist, alchemist, spy and church cleric. With a penchant for gambling and women, his exploits lead to a whirlwind of scandal and excess – and ultimately imprisonment and exile – in this seductive masquerade of passion and politics. New Theatre; newtheatrecardiff.co.uk

SIMPLE MINDS 30 May

Although way past their 80s pomp (their shimmering New Gold Dream album still sounds amazing, almost 35 years down the line), Jim Kerr and co are still widely regarded as one of the best live bands around. With enduring rock and pop anthems in their armoury, they’re taking to the road to perform their era-defining songs acoustically for the very first time, on the back of their rather ace album Simple Minds Acoustic, released late last year. Support comes from fast-rising Welsh multi-instrumentalist and songwriter The Anchoress, whose debut record Confessions Of A Romance Novelist was recently nominated for the Welsh Music Prize. St David’s Hall; stdavidshallcardiff.co.uk

JANE EYRE

27 June – 1 July A collaboration between the National Theatre and Bristol Old Vic, this bold, innovative and dynamic re-imagining of Charlotte Brontë’s classic, trailblazing masterpiece is as inspiring as ever. Uncovering one woman’s fight for freedom and fulfilment on her own terms, Jane Eyre’s eponymous, spirited heroine faces life’s obstacles head-on, surviving poverty, injustice and the discovery of bitter betrayal, before taking the ultimate decision to follow her heart. (Clockwise from left) Coming of age tale The Fits, Dev Patel in Lion, and fantasy drama A Monster Calls

YOUNG AT HEART Films with strong juvenile leads, inspiring coming-of-age stories and battles against the odds on the big screen at Chapter in February By JA M I E R E E S

F

rom a young boy coping with his mother’s terminal cancer to a 10 year-old Ugandan girl whose life is changed forever when she is introduced to the game of chess – the silver screen is packed this month with a range of powerful stories about the younger members of society. In Manchester By The Sea (15, 1-2 February), Lee (Casey Affleck) is shocked to learn that he is now sole guardian of his spirited 15 year-old nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges), after the death of his brother Joe (Kyle Chandler). Taking leave of his job and reluctantly returning to his home town, he is forced to deal with a past long left behind. Both funny and intense, this exploration of grief never lets its characters, or us, off the hook in a film that recently scooped five BAFTA Award nominations. A Monster Calls (12A, 3-9 February), meanwhile, starring Sigourney Weaver, Felicity Jones and Lewis MacDougall, tells the story of Conor (MacDougall), a young boy failing to cope with the fact that his mother is dying of cancer. Bullied at school,

and at home by his imperious grandmother, he relies on his imagination to get through each day, sketching in his notepad, and conjuring a tree-shaped monster (voiced by Liam Neeson) who guides him on his journey of courage and faith.

WE’RE SCREENING POWERFUL STORIES ABOUT THE YOUNGER MEMBERS OF SOCIETY In Lion (PG, 17-23 February), five year-old Saroo gets lost on a train travelling thousands of miles across India, away from home and family. Stranded alone, he is adopted by an Australian couple. 25 years later, armed with only a handful of memories and using new technology, he sets out to find his lost family. Based on the true story of the Brierley family and starring Dev Patel, Rooney Mara and Nicole Kidman, this BAFTA-nominated drama is an illuminating

look at the power of memory. Next up is The Fits (12A, 24 February-2 March), a critically-acclaimed story about 11 year-old Toni (played by Royalty Hightower) who hangs out with her brother at the local boxing club and becomes fascinated with the older all-girl dance team that practice next door. Struggling to fit in, she finds herself caught up in danger as the group begins to suffer from fainting spells and violent seizures in this surreal, beguiling mystery. And living in the slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda, is a constant struggle for 10 year-old Phiona and her family in biographical drama Queen Of Katwe (PG, 18-19 & 25-26 February). Her world suddenly changes when she meets a missionary who teaches children how to play chess – Phiona becomes fascinated with the game and soon becomes a top player under her tutor’s guidance, before her success in local tournaments opens the door to a bright future, and a golden chance to escape from a life of poverty. GREEN DAY Inspired by ‘greenery’, Pantone’s colour of the year for 2017, refresh and revitalise your wardrobe with these zesty green essentials from St David’s Cardiff

W

hile the freshness of greenery reminds us of those crisp spring and summer mornings, those warmer months are a little way off yet. So it’s essential that your everyday style continues to be practical and keeps you cosy as winter’s nip continues to bite. The Luca bomber from All Saints is one of our favourite pieces right now and when it comes in trusty khaki green, you know you’re onto a winner. Pair it with some low-rise skinny jeans and ankle boots, and you’ll be rocking a casual look for any colder occasion. Green not really your thing? Don’t panic! Pantone have paired greenery with a range of colours across 10 palettes, so you can rock this season’s neutrals and pastels one day, and re-introduce summery metallics and bright colours the next – and still be bang on-trend. Try mixing and matching with browns, greys and even limes, accessorise with the vibrant MICHAEL Michael Kors Savannah satchel opposite, and you’ll look the business. Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but there’s no doubt that shoes come in a close second place. Whether you’re dressing down or hitting the town, keep your feet in check at Kurt Geiger. We just love their quirky Langham trainers, and can’t wait for them to make an appearance on our next night out! Pair them with Vivienne Westwood’s Naxos dress – if you dare! – for a proper headturning look. All items available at St David’s Dewi Sant in Cardiff at the time of writing. FOOD

Etc... If you like opulent, glitzy and glammed-up, then you’ll love this place, the latest foodie destination to hit the seaside town of Penarth By N E RYS L LOY D -PI E RC E

M

y perception of Penarth has always been that it’s pretty and pleasant, yet somewhat conservative. But Etc (let’s dispense with the ellipses) in no way confirms my point of view – staid it most certainly isn’t. From the abundance of huge gilt mirrors (even accompanying you up the stairs to the loo) and colossal overhead light fittings, to the gold and black balloons and larger than life candle-holders on the tables, Etc is definitely more party girl than dowager duchess. Larger than life, too, is the soundtrack, belting out classics those of us of a certain age know very well – Culture Club’s Karma Chameleon, UB40’s Red Red Wine, Soft Cell’s Tainted Love. The brainchild of Penarth interior designer and businessman Alex Mules and local entrepreneur Julia Bakshi, Etc describes itself as a ‘conceptual fusion restaurant and cocktail bar’. Award-winning chef, Stephen Gomes, the man behind Moksh in Cardiff Bay, has been brought in as food consultant, and his flamboyant stamp is evident in the elaborate presentation of the dishes, and the use of edible embellishments such as gold and fresh flowers. His elaborate style even extends to the names of dishes such as Cereal Killer and Never-Ending Story – each one comes with a comprehensive description, so the menu isn’t as cryptic as it first appears. I chose Cinderella, a spiced coconut and pumpkin soup accompanied by slender straws of deep-fried tortilla. Simple dishes say a lot about a kitchen, and this dish had both depth of flavour and a spicy but not OTT afterkick. My other half went for ‘Quack’ – duck and mango spring rolls, each served in an individual glass with a different sauce to accompany each one. The verdict? Great flavours in the filling and sauces, but the spring rolls themselves

THIS PLACE IS

LARGER THAN LIFE – DEFINITELY MORE PARTY GIRL THAN DOWAGER DUCHESS

could have been crisper. For veggies, there is also a ‘Quackless’ (their description, not mine) version of the dish. For mains, I went for Silence Of The Lambs (try not to dwell on the psychopathic associations). In layperson’s terms, it’s sous vide grilled lamb cutlets with cinnamon and orange, served with sweet potato mash and French beans. The sous vide cooking technique, in which food is vacuum-sealed in a plastic pouch, then cooked in a water bath, is designed to retain moisture and seal in flavour – which this dish succeeded in doing. Subsequent grilling gave the meat colour and further flavour, while orange and cinnamon added panache, and plentiful sweet potato mash provided the comfort zone. My one gripe was that it was served on a somewhat ‘conceptual’ plate, bowl-like in shape, making it tricky to manage the long-boned cutlets without sending the mash into orbit. Curiously, the second main course, billed as We Found Dory, was sea bass served with wild berry and chilli sauce, beetroot glaze, asparagus and the aforementioned gold sitting on top. The fillet of sea bass, and the cushion of fragrant rice it sat on, got a thumbs-up. However, the wild berry and chilli accessorising it jarred with the fish. And the gold was pure gimmickry, although, admittedly, many will undoubtedly be intrigued by it. My pud, Would You Adam And Eve It, apple crumble with a granola pistachio crumb, served with crème anglaise and vanilla ice cream, had a good flavour, and benefitted from delicious caramelised apple slices. But my partner’s Zesty Lemon Heaven was deemed a bit excessive. The crème brûlée element was excellent – he’s a bit of a connoisseur of this particular pud – but the crunchy meringue pieces, vanilla ice cream and lavender shortbread, although really good, were an unnecessary distraction. In short, for foodie purists, most of the dishes have heart and depth, but can be overwhelmed by too many showy flourishes. But, that said, showmanship is what Etc is all about, and if you want a full-on, theatrical experience, you’ll love it.

RAISE A GLASS On a New Year health kick? Fear not – you can still enjoy a tipple or two with these new low calorie and vegan cocktails, courtesy of Dirty Martini cocktail bar in Cardiff

C

ardiff cocktail bar Dirty Martini has launched its ‘Saintly Six’, a brand new range of low calorie and vegan cocktails – so even those of us on a New Year diet can partake without feeling guilty. Currently available at its St Mary Street bar, the range uses superfood ingredients such as bee pollen – believed to boost health, promote weight loss and prevent allergies – fresh ginger, beetroot, coconut water and green matcha tea, with all cocktails containing less than 220 calories. Following a massive rise in Brits opting to take part in Veganuary, the collection also includes two vegan cocktails: The Fixer Upper (215 calories), for example, combines vodka, ginger syrup, pressed apple juice, beetroot juice, lemon juice, muddled raspberries, cherry bitters and celery salt. “Over the festive period, many people overindulge, so everyone seems to be on a New Year diet,” said Andy McLachlan, general manager at Dirty Martini. “We’ve developed a bespoke range of low calorie and vegan cocktails so that you can still enjoy a delicious cocktail while on a night out.” But are they any good? Well, here are a few recipes for you to try, so judge for yourself – let us know what you think. Chin-chin!

Meet the DENTIST Cardiff has many dentists, but how do you choose the right one for your family? Let this friendly, smiling lot tell you about their practices... sleep. One in three of my clients actually live outside Wales.

CATHEDRAL DENTAL CLINIC

166 Cathedral Road, Pontcanna, Cardiff CF11 9JD Tel: 02920 382671 www.cathedraldentalclinic.com Dr Vida Kolahi Principal Dentist - Special Interest in Orthodontics Dr Andrew Webber Associate - Special Interest in Endodontics Dr Attila Lesti Associate Prosthodontic Specialist Dr Barry Holmes Associate Dental Implant Surgeon What makes you different from other dental clinics? I’m Dr Vida Kolahi, the principal dentist and owner of Cathedral Dental Clinic, where we strongly believe in providing high quality dentistry in a calm, relaxing and professional environment. We offer a complete range of general and cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics, dental implants and specialised prosthodontic treatments using the latest equipment, products and technology. My clinical team and I will work with you to reach the highest level of excellence in oral health and achieve your perfect smile. What makes Cathedral Dental Clinic special? My medical team, along with our professional and friendly support staff, will provide you

with a true five-star service and environment to make you feel comfortable and confident about discussing your dental needs and completing your treatments. We are also a specialist referral clinic, and welcome patients from other clinics on either a dentist or self-referral basis to benefit from our expertise. Why did you choose dentistry? Vida: Teaching the importance of good oral health is my main objective, but cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics are my passion. It gives me great pleasure to know that I have contributed towards my patients’ smiles and newfound confidence. Andrew: I experienced a trauma to my teeth as a child and was fascinated with how my dentist completely restored them. Ironically, I was treated at Cathedral Dental Clinic, where I have been practicing for many years now! Attila: At medical school in Hungary, my skills and interest quickly moved towards dentistry. I’m registered as a restorative specialist in Hungary and as a prosthodontic specialist in the UK. Barry: I became an implant surgeon because I am fascinated with how dentistry combines design, creativity, technology and surgery to enhance a person’s smile.

What are your future plans and goals? To become the go-to practice in Cardiff by providing exceptional customer service. To always be at the cutting edge of dentistry so that we can offer our clients solutions tailored to their individual needs.

Pontcanna dental CARE

Charlie Stephanakis 102 Cathedral Road, Cardiff, CF11 9LP Tel: 02920 387683 www.pontcannadental.co.uk Tell us about your practice... The practice provides client-focused general and cosmetic dentistry with a special interest in dental phobics. Our aim is that our clients want to come back and tell everyone else this is the place to go! Our goal is that clients look after their own oral health with a little help from our very gentle hygienist. At Pontcanna Dental Care, we treat people, not just teeth – and hope they feel they are coming to see friends who just happen to do their teeth. Why did you get into dentistry? I didn’t go to the dentist for 10 years. I was so frightened but after seeing a dentist who treated me the way I treat my clients now, I decided to become a dentist myself. What is the most satisfying part of your job? Seeing clients become comfortable coming to see the team. Helping them take back control of their teeth and achieve the goals they want for their teeth without sedation or being put to

How do you help nervous patients? I have empathy with them, having been there myself. I listen carefully to their story, their feelings and needs in our consultation lounge away from the surgery. I repeat it all back to them to ensure they know I have listened and understood. I do everything at their pace – sometimes I may not even look at their teeth at their first visit. I don’t do anything without their permission (they are the boss!) or without explaining what we are going to do. They are always in control. What misconceptions do people have about dentists? That it will hurt and they will not be listened to and are not in control. At Pontcanna Dental Care, the patient is king! We follow three simple rules: 1) They will not feel anything 2) We will not do anything without them understanding what is going on 3) If they want to rest/stop, we will put a dressing on and they can come back at another time. We always allow ourselves plenty of time, so there’s never a rush. We want people to want to come back and tell others this is where they should be coming for dental treatment. We listen!

CAR REVIEW

Faster and more sophisticated than before, the 1960 Western has recently been remade. And it’s a similar story with the mighty Audi Q7, says MATT BIELBY

That massive maw has been known to swallow Minis and Fiat 500s in a single gulp

T

he Q7 always was a big old beast, but though the all-new version remains an imposing piece of kit, it wears it lightly. The new, sharper-angled lines – common to all latest generation Audis – make it less intimidatingly in-your-face than the old one, but the real change is in the way it drives. Except for in the tightest of car parks and narrowest of country roads, you’re rarely aware that you’re in quite such a monstrously big bus. Indeed, the Q7 has all the upsides of something huge – a commanding driving position, feelings of security, the ability to look down on Transit vans – but virtually none of the downsides. Though a perfectly competent all-terrain wagon, this car has never been about ultimate off-road ability. Instead, it should perhaps be considered the world’s largest, plushest family hatchback, everyday wheels for people who like towing things or hauling big broods. And 56 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

it hits the spot for many people, a consistent high-seller that’s been around since 2005 and has spawned the similar, if smaller, Q5 and Q3 ranges. It’s hard to believe that a decade ago Audi didn’t make SUVs. So what’s new with this latest version? Well, the easiest spot is that huge, silver-edged trapezoidal grill – like the mouth of a basking shark – and the sharp LED lights to the side, highlights of a wellproportioned, neatly-detailed design. But the real cleverness, starting with the huge amount of weight-saving aluminium in the body, is to be found under the skin. Indeed, the second thing you’ll notice is that the Audi Q7 is heaving with technology, meaning you’ll still be finding out new things it can do six months after you bought it. It has the choice of Comfort and Dynamic driving modes you used to only get in top-end sports cars, for instance, while cost options over and above the two trim levels – the familiar SE and fancier S line – include everything from

CAR REVIEW four-wheel steering (meaning you can park it on a sixpence) to adaptive air suspension, which keeps the body constantly level for ultimate comfort. Another option, fitted to the one we tried, is a new version of the super-smart 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit we first saw in the latest Audi TT, putting an LCD screen where the dials would normally be and allowing you to mix and match displays (speed, revs, SatNav, infotainment) in seemingly endless combinations. (Yet another cool option, by the way: the way the tow hook tucks itself behind the rear bumper when not in use.)

THE BIG BLUE

Audi interiors are always sharp; lights are potent and sleek; and the shape (below) is clever in that it disguises the size rather well

Part of the joy of the Q7 is that it’s a genuine sevenseater when you need it to be – and with all three rows of seats ready for bums, there’s still room for a hatchback-sized boot behind them. Fancy carrying a small chest of drawers? Then push a button to fold the back row for a healthy 770 litre of boot space – or nearly 2,000 litres if you lose the centre row, too. A grand piano might not quite fit in here, but they’ve somehow shaved that amount of weight – a remarkable 325kg – from the car, making it nimble, fast and cheap to run. The new MLB Evo chassis – shared with upcoming Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg models, and the Bentley 4x4 – is mostly aluminium, and the agility it allows is considerable. There’s only one engine/gearbox combo – a

three-litre turbodiesel with an 8-speed tiptronic in two states of tune – but the always-smooth performance is blinding (think 6.5 seconds to get to 62mph in the faster version), and the car gives you the confidence to use it. There’s great traction, reasonable steering feel, plenty of stability, and a pleasing tautness that makes it fun to hustle it down sweeping A-roads. This is not a car for the traffic light grand prix, but for overtaking or merging with motorway traffic, it’s spot-on. And though all this ability would have been, only 10 years ago, at the expense of crippling running costs, that’s far from the case now. The combined economy figure of 47.9mpg for the more powerful version is approaching mid-size car territory – think around 35mpg for most of us, most of the time, we reckon – and later on there’ll be a diesel/electric hybrid that will do 166mpg, they say. These are exciting times for Audi, with new models coming thick and fast – there’s also the all-new A4 in saloon and Avant (estate) forms, and a second incarnation of the amazing R8 supercar – but the well-engineered Q7 is leading the charge. It’s both a seamless drive, and one of the most civilised SUVs out there. This is a comfortable, fun, perfectly thrifty family hatchback – that just happens to be really luxurious and bloody massive, too. More info: www.cardiff-audi.co.uk

THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST CIVILISED SUVS OUT THERE

AT A GLANCE Audi Q7 Prices: From £47,755 on-the-road Under the bonnet 268bhp 3.0 litre turbo diesel; also available is a lower-powered 215bhp version Equipment specs Impressive, even on the base SE models – and virtually endless if you start ticking boxes Performance Punchy, doing 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds and topping out at 145mph, yet still returning 47.9mpg and emitting 153g/km CO2 (the 215bhp model gets an even better 52.3mpg/144g/km) In a nutshell A hugely refined, roomy, practical, comfortable and pacy 4x4. Audi has always been good at combining cutting-edge tech with a pleasing user experience, but rarely have they done it quite as well as here Model tested Q7 3.0 TDI S line, £53,835 Dealer Cardiff Audi, Cardiff Gate Business Park, Pontprennau, Cardiff CF23 8RT; Tel: 02920 547555

QUOTE OF THE ISSUE Multi-million pound residential development Ty Llandaff: who says nursing homes have to be dull?

THE BIG STORY

A REAL HOME FROM HOME A new Cardiff nursing home claims to be the “most luxurious” in the city Situated in the quiet, leafy suburb of Pontcanna, close to Llandaff village, the multi-million pound residential development at Ty Llandaff, on Conway Road, hopes to create more than 80 jobs in the local area. Built to a high standard across three floors, with 72 luxurious en-suite bedrooms, it offers fivestar accommodation and superb facilities on an ‘all-inclusive’ basis. Facilities include a home cinema (see pic, right), piano bar, hair salon, luxury spa and therapy rooms, a gym, on-site chef and fine dining, beautiful landscaped gardens, and a ‘celebration’ room which can be used for private family occasions. Ty Llandaff also has its own dedicated activities co-ordinator,

providing a varied programme of entertainment and activities on a daily basis. There’s even a concierge and chauffeur service with a Mercedes-Benz ready to take residents into town – all of which is covered by the weekly fees. Impressive, no? “Our approach is to provide high quality care to all residents,

understanding their needs and respecting their choices, while working closely with relatives to be open and transparent at all times,” said manager Janice Evans, who has more than 30 years of experience managing care homes. “When you’re choosing a home for yourself or a loved one, it’s important to know all the facts before you make such an important long-term decision. We want our residents to enjoy all that Ty Llandaff has to offer, which is why we provide all-inclusive living. It allows our residents to live life to the full and take advantage of all our facilities and activities without having to worry about additional costs.” For more: tyllandaffcare.com

GET INTO GEAR Golley Slater Cardiff, Wales’ largest integrated communications agency, has created a new advert for Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, which aired for the first time recently on national TV. The agency devised the 60-second advert as part of a bold new multi-million pound campaign to mark the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV’s status as the UK’s most popular plug-in hybrid car. Shot in location in Cape Town, in South Africa, the film is set in an ethereal fantasy world. Glimpses of hybrid creatures can be seen watching the Outlander PHEV as it drives past, before bowing down to it in recognition of their new ‘leader’. The TV campaign is supported by a broad media mix including digital, print and social media. “This campaign illustrates that Wales has fast-become one of the leading creative centres in the UK, together with a sharp focus on delivering commercial success,” said Mike Leeson, MD of Golley Slater Cardiff. “We’re extremely proud of our work for Mitsubishi Motors and the impact it has had on the continued success of the brand.”

MUSCLING IN Looking for a new way to get fit? The Studio, a unique new fitness training facility located at Cardiff Bay Business Centre, might be just the thing. Its ‘Studio Method’ – a system of training for strength and conditioning, utilising compound lifts with barbells, supplemented by high intensity interval training (HIIT) – is based on a new approach to personal training. Instead of treadmills, TVs and mirrors, the venue is equipped with indoor sprint tracks, free weights, lifting platforms and spin bikes.

“We are not a gym,” said CEO and co-founder Owen Edwards. “In a gym, you exercise – random, unproductive and ultimately demotivating. At The Studio, we train – tailored, progressive and successful. Training done the right way, by the right people. We welcome all ages, genders and abilities, and provide training programmes in a friendly, supportive environment, to make members strong, fit and healthy.” For more: thestudiomethod.co.uk

t’s not often that such a significant property comes onto the market – Ty Mawr is an exceptional 16th-century house which, despite much alteration, has retained its historic interest. A detached family home, full of warmth and character, it’s located in the highly sought-after Cardiff suburb of Whitchurch, within walking distance of Whitchurch village. Ty Mawr is noteworthy for being the earliest surviving house in Glamorgan dated by inscription, with a date of 1583. The main walls of the house are consistent with that date, but there are additions and details from the 18th century and later that add to the property’s historic charm – retained features of the original house include chamfered oak beams in the hall and a Tudor-arched fireplace on the first floor. The whole house was very much altered, however, with inserted fireplaces, staircase and structural joinery, sometime around the 1900s. Inside, the large hall – approached through a door from an enclosed porch – has a picture window overlooking the garden and features a traditional open fireplace with an arched tile surround. From the hall, there are doors to the other principal reception rooms and a substantial oak staircase leading to the first floor. The character of the hall itself is further enhanced by its beamed ceiling. On the west side of the hall, the sitting room provides a homely, comfortable family space, with a characterful open fireplace and a bay window overlooking the garden. To the east, the study and sizeable dining room also feature character fireplaces and enjoy lovely views out across the front lawn. To the north, there is access to a rear vestibule and a small bathroom. Located at the rear of the house, the kitchen sits adjacent to the breakfast room and is equipped with a range of dove-grey units and integrated appliances. 72 I CARDIFF LIFE I www.mediaclash.co.uk

Outside, there is a charming, enclosed, private garden, featuring a generous lawn and terrace areas with wellstocked borders, and an abundance of mature trees and shrubs that make for a very pretty setting. ur resident business columnist is a busy lady. As well as founding engagement company inspireMe – providing mindful, creative solutions for businesses and individuals – musicianturned-entrepreneur Andrea is also an in-demand motivational speaker and an authoritative talking head on business and her music industry experiences. She still sings, too, and coaches singers, performers and speakers. Rock on! So, where’s home in Cardiff? The magnificent Roath – I love living here. Fantastic location for town, and great coffee shops, parks and eateries in every direction. Gotta love Made In Roath, too! You’re the founder of engagement company inspireMe – in a nutshell, what does it do? We provide mindful, creative and fun selfdevelopment and team solutions for both the corporate market and individuals. We’re best known for our workplace ‘inspire’ choirs and citybased superchoirs. What makes it special? inspireMe supports people becoming more authentic, aligned and connected versions of themselves, making them happier and more fulfilled, with amazing, often life-changing results. We use creative disciplines like singing, dancing and drumming, combined with mindfulness practices, presence and positive psychology – that’s when the magic happens. Why did you choose to go down this path? I’m a singer and voice expert by trade, so I know the transformational benefits of mixing voice work with mindset training and coaching. I originally co-founded Sing & Inspire in 2008, then developed that into inspireMe when I took over the business as sole owner. If you could get up on your soapbox about a particular issue, what would it be? I’m really passionate about people finding their confidence and being honest. At the other end of the scale, I get massively wound up about people not indicating when driving! Most famous person you follow on Twitter? Barack Obama or The Dalai Lama – not sure who’s more famous. How do you relax? Spending time with my husband Matt and my two kids, Cole (16) and Alby (20 months). Proudest moment so far? Seeing Alby walk for the first time, and listening to Matt, my husband, talk about our #wemakegoodhappen ‘good deeds’ project on Lauren Laverne’s BBC Radio 6 Music show a few months back.

ANDREA CALLANAN The founder of creative team-building and training company inspireMe on self-development and inconsiderate drivers Most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you? OMG, there are loads – I recently sent a WhatsApp voice message to Matt telling him how much I love him, but accidentally sent it to the whole of the inspireMe team by mistake. When did you last cry? I’m always crying. I cried earlier today, watching Michelle Obama’s final First Lady speech. Dream dinner party guests? Oprah, Richard Branson, Tony Robbins, Danielle LaPorte, my husband Matt and Shirley Bassey. If push came to shove, what would be your final meal of choice? Anything gluten-free and vegetarian. If your nearest and dearest had to describe you, what would they say? I just asked Matt and he says loving, thoughtful, creative, talented and compassionate [What’s he after? – Ed]. What’s your guiltiest pleasure? Chocolate, trashy novels and shopping in discount stores. What’s the most important lesson life has taught you? To be completely authentic and present. Then there’s no room for fear, and you can accept yourself fully! What’s on your bookshelf at the moment? The book I’m currently writing – Find Your Voice, Find Your Confidence. Also Big Magic: Creative

Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert, Tribes by Seth Rodin, Night School (Jack Reacher) by Lee Child, Five Go Gluten Free and Valley Affairs by Grace Thompson (trashy novel alert!). Which piece of music always sends a shiver down your spine? Les Fleurs by Minnie Riperton is very special to me – it was my wedding aisle song and reminds me of Sunday afternoons with Norman Jay at the Big Chill festival years ago. Karaoke choice? Son Of A Preacher Man by Dusty Springfield. Must-watch television programme(s)? I’m more of a movies girl... If you had a superpower, what would it be? Super-healing powers. Favourite shop in Cardiff? I hardly ever go shopping – does eBay count? Locally, where do you like to eat and drink? The Pear Tree and Café Juno on Wellfield Road. The latter is good for GF food and kids, which ticks two boxes for me. And we had our inspireMe Christmas meal at Miller & Carter – I was blown away by how good it was. Finally, surprise us with a little-known fact about yourself… I used to be a burlesque singer – my alter ego is Miss Elizabeth (Betty) Rouge!
