elcome to the Cardiff Life Awards 2022!

Here’s to another joyous celebration of the great and good of Cardiff.

This is the annual event that sees the largest number of local businesses come together under one roof to cheer each other on and support each other’s marvellous successes and inspiring efforts. It’s one of the biggest networking events in the capital too, with unlimited potential connections and relationships to be gained. So, go on, get mingling!

Many of you reading this will be up for Awards yourselves tonight, in categories ranging from Arts and Events, to Hospitality, Education and Property – and not forgetting the brand-new Sustainability Award. To say the shortlist was challenging to create is a colossal understatement, because, we had, drumroll please, a record-breaking number of entries this year, totalling close to 350 – which means, with such a vast number of entrants, less than half of them made the shortlist. So please do give yourselves a huge da iawn to have made it this far.

As for our winners tonight, they’ve been chosen by our independent panel of judges which we selected from a medley of sectors across the city. Every year, the team at Cardiff Life hands this mighty responsibility over to a newly chosen array of judges and we step back and watch the fierce debates commence. We certainly don’t envy their mammoth task.

This evening is about honouring all of you, the remarkable businesses, the creative entrepreneurs, the inventive retailers, the civic minded – the founders, the leaders, the grafters – who help shape Cardiff into an epic place to live, work and play. It’s about saying we did it – we got through those dark, scary and challenging times – and we did it together.

The hundreds of you in attendance tonight deserve recognition.

Thanks to those who entered, sponsored, judged and came here this evening. Personally, I want to say thank you for making my job such a joy. It’s a privilege to share your stories and to play a part, through our magazine and tonight’s annual glittering event, in shining a light on the brilliance of this city.

NIGEL OWENS MBE

N

igel Owens MBE is the mostcapped referee in world rugby and the first openly gay man to referee at the highest level.

He was born and raised on a council estate in Mynyddcerrig, Wales; at 16, he picked up a referee whistle, and the rest is history…

Nigel refereed his first international game in 2005 in Osaka between Ireland and Japan and made his world Cup debut in 2007 refereeing Argentina v Georgia.

More impressively, Owens is the only rugby referee to officiate at three consecutive Heineken Cup finals.

Aside from his fantastic rugby refereeing knowledge and skills, rugby fans enjoy Nigel’s firm but fair and often entertaining interaction with the players. Some of Nigel Owens’ best on-pitch quotes include, “This is not soccer – is that clear?”, “I’m straighter than that one!”, “The football stadium is 500 yards that way”.

Also highly decorated, Nigel’s accolades include an MBE for services to sport, Stonewall’s Gay Sports Personality of the Year and Gay Sports Personality of the Decade, Honorary Doctorates at Swansea and South Wales University, and Honorary Fellowships at Cardiff Met University and Cardiff University.

In December 2020, as the most-capped referee in world rugby, Nigel brought his 17-year international career to an end reaching 100 Caps. Since retiring from refereeing, Nigel has fulfilled a burning ambition to run his own farm full time.

With the help of Barrie, Nigel’s partner, Nigel is caring for a large herd of Hereford cows.

HEALTH & SAFETY

• We want attendees at the Awards to be safe and feel reassured by the sensible approach which is being taken before and during the event.

• All attendees have been encouraged to take a Lateral Flow Test within 24 hours of when they were due to arrive at the Awards, and to register the result with the NHS. • If you are experiencing Covid symptoms, or in the last two weeks have been in contact with anyone with Covid symptoms, we politely request that you don’t attend.

• There will be multiple hand sanitising stations

throughout the venue. Please remember to regularly clean your hands throughout.

• Facemasks generally: these are not obligatory but please feel free to wear one if you are more comfortable, and please respect those who choose to wear one.

• All event spaces including tables will be open to attendees throughout the evening from 6.30pm and we encourage guests to take seats as early as possible. To help facilitate that, please familiarise yourself with where your table is and also let your teams and guests know. The table plan will be on the emailed to attendees no later than 24 hours before the Awards.

• Communal areas are being cleaned regularly during the evening, including the toilets.

• Bar and all food preparation adheres to hospitality government guidelines.

• We recommend that drinks orders can be made from your seat to reduce crowding at the bar.

• The event is CASHLESS so please bring card payment for drinks.

• The microphones are wiped down after use each time, so are safe for use by Sponsors and Winners.

ANDREW CHONGSATHIEN Founder, Brother Thai From intrepid street food trader to restaurateur, Andrew is the driving force behind the success story of Cardiff’s very own Brother Thai. Drawing from a wide range of eclectic experiences from 15 years’ of hospitality, graphic design, branding, selling rugs in New Zealand and muddy music festivals, Andrew’s grass-roots approach has continued to win over new and loyal fans for over half a decade.

BETH MORRIS Founder, Beth Morris Workshops Beth Morris is the founder of the community art school Beth Morris Workshops, based at Insole Court in Cardiff.

With a master’s in art and design, a PGCE, and as a published author (in 13 languages), Beth’s accolades are extensive. Beth is an educator, creator and motivator in all thing’s arts and crafts, with a passion for wellbeing and improving mental health through creative socialising.

CARYS REES Adventurer, This Girl Walks Carys is an outdoor lover on a mission to empower women, helping them to experience the freedom and euphoria of solo adventuring. Carys is a hiker, swimmer, wild camper and paddler who runs the This Girl Walks website, which shares routes, hints, tips and discounts to help get you outside. Originally from Carmarthenshire, Carys grew up with the countryside on her doorstep, carrying her love for green spaces with her to Cardiff over 20 years ago.

COCO Writer and poet, Talk to Coco Coco is a non-binary creative writer and poet and a mental health and LGBTQ+ activist, who uses their platform as a lens to dismantle stereotypes. Coco has been published in books, seen on TV commercials, and collaborated with worldwide organisations such as UNWOMEN, BBC, Yahoo UK and Wagamama’s (just to name a few). Coco continues to be the face for change, to show that it’s ok to be different, creating a ‘new normal’ for those that need it.

DIXIE NORMOUS Performer Dixie is a rising star in the Cardiff drag scene, performing all over the UK with her cabaret show — she can usually be found in Mary’s on a Wednesday hosting Cabaroke. With just four years under her belt, Dixie is quickly becoming an audience favourite. She is excited to be a part of the judging panel for this year’s Cardiff Life Awards and can’t wait to give some well-deserved 8 I CARDIFF LIFE AWARDS I www.mediaclash.co.uk

DOMINIC ATTARD Business centre manager, Lexus Cardiff Dominic Attard is the business centre manager of Lexus Cardiff, based on Hadfield Road. Known for his innovative and entrepreneurial spirit, he has received numerous, prestigious awards from Lexus UK as recognition for Lexus Cardiff’s outstanding achievements in innovation and customer service. Community minded, Dominic has built long-lasting relationships with local businesses and charities and is very much a people person. A proud Welshmen, his ‘can do’ attitude really makes things happen.

JULIA LONGVILLE Dean of the Cardiff School of Education & Social Policy, Cardiff Metropolitan University Julia is dean of the Cardiff School of Education at Cardiff Metropolitan University. She has an MSc coaching science degree from UWIC, a Certificate of Education teaching qualification and a BEd from Barry Teacher Training College. However, her achievements don’t stop there – Julia is also a former Wales international netball player with 25 caps, and a former international coach. Julia is passionate about teaching, helping to provide children in Wales with a high-quality education.

KATIE KEEFE General manager, Laings With over 18 years’ experience working within the luxury jewellery and watch sector, Katie’s retail philosophy centres around unforgettable customer service for all clients and has been a key part of Laings’ evolution in Wales. Last year, Laings Cardiff saw its footprint triple in size with the introduction of the largest Rolex showroom outside of London. Together, these developments have marked a new era for Laings and are testament to Katie’s commitment to enriching Cardiff with luxury retail experiences.

Having held senior positions in-house, in consultancy and on a freelance basis, her career highlights include roles with British Airways and Birmingham International Airport Ltd.
