Anyone for terrace?

Bristol has its al fresco on, and we’ve found you the very best spots

ummertime, and the living is freezy.

From where I’m sitting it looks nothing like the picture on the left.

Have we offended the weather gods by running an al fresco dining guide in this issue? Should we have thrown them off the scent with a feature on cosy faux-fur jackets and log burners instead? Oh well, it’s done now, all 12 pages of it, and I’m sure it’ll come in handy at some point.

Besides, Bristol isn’t the kind of city to let rain stop play; we are made of sterner stuff.

Some of my very best memories have featured a proper soaking. Just get yourself a nice Rainkiss poncho from Grace & Mabel (this is not product placement, I swear, I can show you the receipt, I just really love my poncho) and you’ll stay dry and toasty even when it’s chucking it down.

Of course, while Bristol loves an outdoor shindig, it never allows its indoor venues to go completely dark either. As a case in point, Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband is currently at Bristol Old Vic; on page 36 we chat to director Nicholai La Barrie about his take on the play.

Cinema Rediscovered is back next month too, with a strand honouring Aardman (page 38).

The studio is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year – a big exhibition at M Shed is just about to open, its new Shaun the Sheep movie, The Beast of Mossy Bottom, is out this autumn, and even the Royal Mint has joined in the fun by creating a commemorative 50p coin.

With Aardman’s cabinets stuffed with Oscars and BAFTAs, and Peter Lord, David Sproxton and Nick Park already garlanded with CBEs, are there any honours still to be lavished?

Knighthoods, perhaps? You have to admit, Lord Lord has a ring to it.

Back at you in mid-July. Meanwhile you’ll find me on an outdoor terrace somewhere; I’ll be the one in the polyester leopard-print poncho.

Want to feel old? Aardman Animations has hit the half-a-century mark this year, and as part of the celebrations it’s collaborated with Bristol Museums to bring us the Cracking Exhibition, Gromit: 50 Years of Aardman in Bristol at M Shed. Just about to open, the show takes a behind-the-scenes look at the studio’s process, the creation of its much-loved characters and its deep-rooted connection to Bristol. Meanwhile, over at Bristol Museum, tiny Aardman figures have been hidden among the exhibits for you to find.

“The anniversary wouldn’t have been complete without a celebration in our home city”, said Aardman’s Ngaio Harding-Hill. “The experiences with M Shed and Bristol Museum will be a real highlight, celebrating the importance of Bristol, its people and creative connection to the studio.”

There’s also a strand at Cinema Rediscovered (page 38), and the release of Aardman’s new movie, Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom in the autumn. Meanwhile the Royal Mint have pressed a set of commemorative 50p coins; they don’t cost 50p, mind, they’re priced between £15 and (gulp) £2,420; we hear Feathers McGraw is planning a heist.

Get your Bristol Locations Spotters Guide out, because Season 2 of Jilly Cooper’s irresistible Rivals is currently screening on Disney+.

There’s the Bristol Marriott, pretending to be an Irish hotel during Declan and Cameron’s whisky-fuelled evening. Harbourside, the Hippodrome and Denmark Street all make an appearance, and we’re pretty sure we glimpsed the dining room at The Ox. All interior sets were shot, as ever, at The Bottle Factory studios.

Acknowledging that 95% of the locations were filmed within a 30-mile radius of the studio, adding millions of pounds to the country’s fastestgrowing regional economy, Rivals cast and creatives joined Disney+, producers Happy Prince and West of England mayor Helen Godwin at The Everyman for a special launch screening and panel discussion.

“Both Rivals series were entirely made possible by the talent, ingenuity, tenacity and good humour found in the West of England”, said Alexander Lamb of Happy Prince. “Just like Declan O’Hara’s Venturer Television, Happy Prince is committed to showcasing the very best of the region, to bring its perfect locations and the work of its gifted crew to screen for the rest of the world to enjoy. BRISTOL HITS DIFFERENT

Yet another accolade for Bristol, for those who put store by such things, as Nick Redman in the Sunday Times decrees that it’s ‘the coolest city in the UK’.

“Bristol has always done things differently”, he writes.

“Brimming with culture and counterculture, the city’s history of activism makes it an electric weekend break” – (probably only true if you plan to join a protest march).

Banksy gets his inevitable nod, along with a recommendation for Luke Sargeant’s walking tour of the city’s street art. The indie food scene is praised, of course, with Little French, Bank Tavern, Noah’s, COR, Milk Thistle and Clouds pulled out as examples; visitors are also encouraged to visit M Shed, Lido, Aerospace Bristol, Stokes Croft with its “unpretentious parade of charity shops, African and Asian food and peeling caffs” (they’re not all peeling, Nick), and, more idiosyncratically, the air raid shelter below St Nicholas’ Market.

inally (and contrary to appearance, at least at time of going to press), it’s summer. We’ve been stuck indoors long enough, Bristol’s best restaurants have got their al fresco on, and the only thing that’s missing on the terrace is you. Rain or shine, let’s take it outside.

THE ARCHITECT CAFE BAR, Narrow Quay

This Art Deco café-bar brings a dash of European flair to the city, while the sundeck situated on the water’s edge is perfect for a sundowner.

Why we love it: It’s the perfect day-to-night venue.

Grab a coffee during your commute, park up and work for an hour or two, grab a hearty sandwich for lunch, or a charcuterie board and cocktail in the evening.

What are we having?: Well, we’ve spotted a peach and coconut margarita on the summer menu, and given that this is possibly the only marg flavour in the world we have yet to try, we’re obviously having that.

In case you didn’t know: This is also the home of Design West, the charity which promotes and facilitates the design of better places.

Fun fact: Originally an old sail loft, The Architect was salvaged from ruin in the1990s by a group of architects, engineers and citizens who cared about the impact of good design on society. AVON GORGE BY HOTEL DU VIN, Sion Hill

ARNOLFINI CAFÉ BAR, Narrow Quay

This corner of Harbourside is so damn iconic it used to have its own social hashtag, #outsidefini. One of the best places to admire the waterfront action is from Arnolfini Café Bar where the tented awning over the sun terrace shrugs indifferently at the threat of a shower. Why not mosey into the gallery to see one of the free exhibitions while you’re there?

Why we love it: It’s the Bristol summer on a stick.

Fresh reason to go: Esteemed indie brewery Wiper + True has just become the café bar’s new operator, and if that isn’t enticing enough know that they’ve partnered with fabulous foodies FED. What are we having?: By day, coffee from Yallah, pastries, toasties, salads and cakes, while evenings bring Wiper and True’s freshly brewed beers alongside cocktails, wines and non-alcoholic options. www.arnolfini.org.uk/cafe-bar

The historic hotel was reinvented with typical élan by the Hotel du Vin group, though to be honest, given that view we’d go even if it was a Harvester.

Tell us more about that view: The vast terrace virtually hangs over the Avon Gorge, with the Suspension Bridge supplying picture-postcard interest.

What’s the al-fresco deal?: Both the White Lion pub, part of the hotel, and its more formal Goram & Vincent restaurant have outdoor tables.

What are we having?: The grilled sea bass with romesco sauce, toasted almonds and salsa verde is making a persuasive case to us right now.

Fun fact: Goram and Vincent is named after two mythical local giants, who loved the same woman – the beautiful Avona, who offered her hand (and presumably the rest of her) to whoever could drain the lake. Goram drank a giant quantity of ale whilst working and fell asleep (classic Goram!). Vincent finished and won Avona.

Sore loser that he was, when Goram woke up he was so furious that he stamped his foot in a pit, creating The Giant’s Footprint in the Gorge. Gospel truth. www.theavongorgehotel.com

BAMBALAN, Beacon Tower

You always get the impression that Bambalan’s owners secretly wish they were in Ibiza and have done their damnedest to replicate the vibe. It has one of the largest rooftop terraces in town, a relaxed all-day food offering, and the Summer Sessions day parties on selected dates feature big-name DJs from across all genres.

What we’re eating: The grilled chicken Caesar salad, if we’re feeling virtuous; the charcoal roasted lamb shoulder pizza with feta if we just don’t care.

Know that: Bottomless brunches run 10am-3pm Saturday and Sunday with unlimited prosecco, Dr Feel Good cocktails, Bloody Marys, beer and cider. www.bambalan.co.uk

They call themselves ‘Bristol’s best-kept secret’, though we’ve been banging on about them since 2004; either way, this charming, tranquil, leafy riverside pub is open to the public from Friday-Sunday and at weekends and also available to hire for events.

The best way to arrive: You can come by bike, taxi or public transport (cars are politely discouraged) but why would you do that when it’s so much more magical to travel by boat? Depending on tides, weather, etc the Beeses Boat will carry you across the river, or Bristol Packet will get you there in style from the city centre.

Know that: There’s a long and lively programme of summer events to heighten the experience, with live music every Friday, from rock to Afrobeats to swing.

We’re heading over: For Sunday lunch; if you book via Bristol Ferry you can sort your meal and transport in one. www.beeses.co.uk

BOCABAR, Finzels Reach

Located in the old city centre, the huge outdoor terrace at Bocabar Finzels has a piazza-meets-festival vibe. The large fairylit stretch tent at the far end of the terrace provides the perfect sheltered outdoor ‘room’ with a capacity for up to 50/60 people, making it a top private-hire party option. The rest of the outdoor space offers a generous 70 covers under strings of festoon lights and large heated jumbrellas..

We love: The generous size of the sunny terrace makes this a special find in the city centre. Table service extends outdoors, while the casual dining menus of sharing plates, lunch specials and the famous Boca pizzas are summer dining on a plate, with loads of choice. As in, a whopping 27 varieties.

What are we having?: The pizza sandwich crafted from a light crispy dough and filled with bold Italian flavours is the new go-to lunch special. Fillings change weekly: try the BBQ pulled pork, provolone, parmesan aioli and rocket pesto; or maybe the feta, grilled courgettes, nduja aioli, peperonata and spinach. Other weekly specials flying out of the kitchen include garlic and lime prawn and mango tacos, and a crispy smoked salmon and dill fishcake topped with hollandaise. For the full summer experience team with a chilled glass of Cremant de Loire.

Fun fact: Bocabar’s cool, festival atmosphere is perhaps unsurprising given that the co-owners are related to the great Michael Eavis. And no, before you ask, they can’t get you a Glastonbury ticket. www.bristol.bocabar.co.uk

This tiny Michelin Bib Gourmand Modern-British restaurant is a favourite with its devoted regulars and fellow chefs. It’s a husband-and-wife affair, with Elliott Lidstone in the open kitchen and manager Tess offering her famously warm welcome in the dining room. The secluded terrace up in the canopy of the Wapping Wharf trees is shaded by a canvas stretch tent, its corner position offering perfect harbour views.

What’s the vibe?: Good times! Sit back and let Elliott and Tess take care of all your needs, from icy drinks to seasonal summery dishes.

We’re having: The seven-course tasting menu, a snip at £59 per person is a snip for Elliott’s elevated cooking.

Fun fact: The cooking is based around their “shit-hot stove – a snazzy solid top we’ve named Sandra”. www.boxebristol.com

BRAVAS, Cotham Hill

After much to-ing and fro-ing, and a tsunami of local support, the Season +Taste group won their battle to keep their outdoor terrace open; do come along and make the most of it. If you only want a semi-al-fresco experience you can perch at the indoor counter, next to the opened bifold windows.

What’s the vibe?: Sunny and sociable, with the kind of atmosphere that makes Cotham Hill feel positively Mediterranean. What makes it special is its authenticity – it’s not just a restaurant, it’s a place with soul, where great hospitality, brilliant food and an easy summer energy all come together.

What we’re having: Ice-cold manzanilla, a few plates of pan con aioli, sizzling chorizo in Somerset cider and padrón peppers instantly bring the holiday feels: simple, vibrant and full of sunshine.

CARGO CANTINA, Cargo 2

The terrace is ideal for grabbing anything from a drink and snack to a full feast of nachos and tacos; like most CARGO terraces there are heaters and blankets if it turns parky, though the spicy cooking will keep you warm.

We love: The food, which is real-deal Mexican, not TexMex. In the spirit of street-taco stalls, dishes are sent out when they’re ready, and served in the centre of the table.

We’re having: The trout tostadas, which bring bright, fresh flavours that instantly transport you to the coast. We’re washing them down with cheladas, the perfect hot-weather drink – crisp, citrussy, salty, and incredibly refreshing on a hot day. Together, they create that unmistakable summer feeling: light food, cold drinks, good music, and nowhere else you need to be.

Fun fact: It’s inspired by the authentic cantinas of Mexico – once forbidden to women, children and anyone in police or military uniform, where hombres drank around the bar and tucked into botanas (bar snacks). In modern Bristol, however, even female cops are warmly welcomed. www.cargocantina.co.uk

COR, Whiteladies Road

Opened in 2022, awarded a Bib Gourmand in 2023, and included in practically every ‘best Bristol restaurant’ list compiled ever since.

What’s the al fresco deal?: No outdoor tables as such, but “We’ve got some great al-fresco energy with the big open windows”, says chef-proprietor Mark Chapman.

What’s the cooking style?: Mediterranean-influenced small plates, playing to Mark’s fine-dining training while incorporating the fun, sharing style of food they love.

We want it all: Including the summery-sounding strawberry, cucumber and radish salad with pickled ewes curd; the cannellini beans in lemon beurre blanc; oh and go on, then, the Ibérico pork bavette. www.correstaurant.com

CONDESA, Whiteladies Road

Mexican-flavoured restaurant from Season+Taste with a suntrap front terrace that’s ideal for people-watching.

Tell us about the food, amigos: Condesa puts its own spin on Mexican-inspired cooking with a seasonal sharing menu filled with vibrant flavours and fire-cooked dishes. Tequila and Mezcal rule the drinks list, shaken and stirred into refreshing summer cocktails for sunny afternoons and warm evenings, and ice-cold Mexican beers and crisp serves are always on hand.

What are we having?: Chef ’s menu of four tapas and a pudding for £53 looks like a winner to us.

COTTO, St Stephen’s Street

Wine bar and kitchen run by the Bianchis family, with a few outside tables. If you’ve managed to pass sister restaurant Ripiena without being reeled in by the sight of the food and drink, you’ll probably succumb at this point.

What’s the food like?: The kind nonna makes; simple Italian home cooking inspired by the joy of sharing a hearty meal.

We’re having: The casarecce cacio e pepe, if it’s on. Or maybe the bucatini alla puttanesca, who knows? We’ll see where the fancy takes us. Oh and we’d never miss a Bianchis’ arancini, and neither should you.

What else do we love?: The Bianchis’ signature top-notch service and excellent value (the weekday lunch deal is £19-£23). Love a spritz? They have two for £15 on weekdays, and on Hospo Mondays you also get two negronis for £15, and 20% off all wine.

GAMBAS, Cargo 2

Although the partly covered terrace is in use all year round, (it’s heated during the colder months) the waterfront location and seafood-focused menu could be specifically designed for the Bristol summer. The authentic Spanish tapas pair perfectly with the spot-on wine selection.

Tempt us with the current menu: After a glass of vermouth we’re digging into the classic tapas. We may share the signature squid ink Valencian rice, and we’re definitely finishing with the goxua – a Basque caramel sponge cake drenched in saboyan sauce, which we firmly believe to be one of the best desserts in Bristol.

Sounds as good as it tastes: If you visit while there’s a gig on at Lloyd’s, you may catch snatches of the music drifting across the water. If a balloon also happens to sail overheard you know you’ve hit peak Bristol.

Fun fact: Tapa is Spanish for ‘top’, and harks back to when simple snacks such as bread, jamon and cheese were placed over drinks to stop the flies getting in. We deeply admire the priorities here.

Going anywhere nice for your holidays?: Yes, we’re off to Gambas. Order a snack of tortita de camarones and a glass of fino and you’ll be instantly transported to the caleta bar in Cadiz. www.gambasbristol.co.uk

SUMMER DINING GRAIN BARGE, Hotwell Road

The only thing better than dining on the waterfront is dining on an actual boat. The top deck of the barge has the best views; from here, you can gaze over to the ss GB and lazily watch all the small craft and SUP flotillas as the sun goes down.

What’s the foodie deal?: The sustainable menu includes small plates, ciabattas and buns, and Bristol Beer Factory-battered fish and chips; leave room for the legendary sticky milkstout pudding, or the Eton mess with Cheddar Valley strawberries,.

We love that: You can travel to Grain Barge by boat or paddleboard, or indeed any other floating vehicle; just moor up outside and hop on up. www.grainbarge.com

HARBOUR HOUSE, The Grove

A restaurant and bar within a lofty, vaulted woodbeamed Grade-II boatshed built by Brunel; the covered balcony is on the waterfront, across from Redcliffe.

We love: The prettily garlanded, tented outdoor terrace, with its astroturf carpet.

How about the food?: The menu champions the best seasonal produce and suppliers from the South West, with emphasis on the finest seafood in the region.

We’re having: The Fishmonger’s Lunch, a seasonally changing three-course menu for only £15. The cocktails are always a highlight, too; we’re keen to try the Ferrero Rocher with 6 o’clock London Dry Gin, kahlúa, frangelico and cream.

LAPIN, Cargo 2

The French corner of Wapping Wharf has a covered terrace of 20 seats with harbour views, and heaters for when the Bristol summer disappears in on itself.

What’s the food like?: Proper bistro-brasserie. Think scallop en croûte with leek and pickled kohlrabi, or a pig’s head croquette with chicory and vinaigrette.

Don’t miss: The duck breast with liver parfait, roasted apricot and chicory, and/or the soufflé Suissesse with tomato cream; the three-course prix fixe menu is also a bargain at £29.

KASK, North Street

The kind of bar you stumble across on a European mini-break, but instead of being at the end of an EasyJet flight it’s right here in BS3. The garden terrace is ideal for whiling away long summer evenings with good wine, local beer, cheese, charcuterie and bar snacks. There’s also a canopy in case, god forbid, we see any rain.

We love: That it’s like a little bodega right here in BS3.

The largest in the Bianchis portfolio, Pazzo has several tables out front to maximise the elusive rays of Bristol sun.

What’s on the menu? They’re currently combining their trattoria offering with their famous Pizza Bianchi menu, and it’s all great value: the £20-£24 lunch deal runs 5.30 -6.30pm Mon-Thurs, or you can grab a margherita or the pizza special for £10 every day.

What we’re having: Choosing between the pasta dishes and a pizza is always a difficult, if enjoyable, choice, the great thing being that you really can’t go wrong here.

What’s on the menu?: It changes all the time, depending on the seasons and the produce delivered that day; but in the summer expect more salad-based dishes to be added to the quality gastropub offering and the Sunday lunch. Head chef Iain Webb is a strong believer in nose-to-tail and is also a big seafood fan.

BLACK COMEDY Morality, love and corruption: it’s Oscar Wilde’s AN IDEAL HUSBAND, reimagined for our times Words by Ursula Cole

t’s Oscar Wilde, but not as you know him. Banish all lingering images of Susan Hampshire in a bustle, for this production of An Ideal Husband, from the Lyric Hammersmith and Bristol Old Vic, is quite the contemporary affair, with a bold new interpretation and a fully Black and mixed-race cast.

Here’s the story. Successful politician Sir Robert Chiltern’s carefully managed public image is threatened when a woman from his past arrives with damaging information. What follows is a witty, fast-moving drama packed with politics, romance and some surprisingly modern observations about honesty, loyalty and public image.

“At its heart, An Ideal Husband is a play about lying,” director Nicholai La Barrie told us. “Wilde poses a deceptively simple question: if we lie to the people we love, can we be forgiven, and should we be?”

While Wilde’s original play was set in wealthy Victorian society, the story still manages to feel current: in an age of political scandals, social media image-management and public figures constantly under scrutiny, its questions about morality and reputation still hit home.

“This 2026 reimagining places Wilde’s classic firmly in our present moment,” says Nicholai. “Set within today’s political landscape, the production embraces a heightened, theatrical world that is bold, selfaware, and unapologetically opulent. With an all-Black cast, we explore questions of power, respectability and public image through a lens that feels both urgent and necessary.”

But don’t come along expecting a heavy political discourse; this is dear Oscar, after all, and An Ideal Husband has plenty of clever quickfire observations and LOL moments.

“The play is incredibly funny, but it is also, at its core, a love story,” says Nicholai. “I’m drawn to its belief in the endurance of commitment – the idea that choosing to stand beside someone, even in their imperfection, is a radical act.”

company”, says Bristol actor Nimmy March, who plays the Countess of Basildon. “We are bonded by our mutual desire to create a great experience for the audience, while being true to the original text. However, there is an extra layer of thrill and pride too because this is the first all-Black and mixed-race production of the play.

“Nicholai is a very generous, thorough and playful director. He has cleverly put together a very caring, talented, fun cast, and his style of direction gives actors confidence and ownership of the play. It feels like a wonderfully genuine collaboration.”

The production combines stylish visuals, contemporary music and Wilde’s famously sharp dialogue, creating something that feels both classic and modern.

“Despite having been written well over a century ago [it first played in 1895], the themes in An Ideal Husband are still relevant and prevalent in today’s society,” says Nimmy. “Morality, love, corruption and more love! This modern production is witty, insightful and ultimately heartwarming; audiences seem to leave feeling uplifted.”

And while the show is packed with humour and glamour, the cast and creative team hope audiences leave thinking about some of the bigger questions underneath the comedy.

“This story feels timely,” says Nicolai. “It asks us to consider the people we choose to trust, the ones we place in positions of power, and whether the ideals we demand of them are human or impossible.”

“Aside from leaving feeling thoroughly entertained, I hope very much that the narratives within the play inspire conversations about morality and accountability in government and the business world, as well as within human relationships,” says Nimmy.

For anyone who thinks classic theatre might be distant or difficult, this production proves otherwise. Wilde’s writing remains funny, entertaining and surprisingly relatable – especially in a world where image and reputation often seem more important than truth. n

Bristol’s celebrating Aardman’s 50th birthday, and CINEMA REDISCOVERED has no intention of being left out of the fun

uite apart from introducing us to a universe filled with such unforgettable characters as Wallace & Gromit, Morph, Shaun, Feathers McGraw and a bunch of escapee chickens, Aardman will be forever loved in Bristol for its generous collaboration with The Grand Appeal, helping to raise millions of pounds for the Children’s Hospital through art trails and spin-off merchandise.

Over at M Shed, new exhibition Cracking Exhibition, Gromit! 50 Years of Aardman in Bristol opens on 20 June, with rarely‑seen models, sets, and behind-the-scenes secrets of Aardman’s stop‑motion magic. At Bristol Museum there’s a mini-treasure trail, with tiny treasures from the studio hidden in cabinets for visitors to discover ; no, you can’t take them home.

And in July, Cinema Rediscovered is getting on board with a special strand dedicated to the studio, with the help of Aardman co-founders Peter Lord and David Sproxton.

SLEDGEHAMMER REVEALED (23 & 25 July)

Peter Gabriel (otherwise occupied at WOMAD) gives a video intro to a documentary about the making by Aardman and the Brothers Quay of one of the most innovative, watched, most award-laden videos in music history, which went on to win a record nine MTV Awards in 1987.

The film includes behind-the-scenes stories about the creation of Sledgehammer, with Dave Sproxton on hand to chat about the innovative animation techniques involved, followed by a fully restored version of the pop promo.

ARTS Directed by Peter Lord and Dave Sproxton, Babylon focused on the thin line between human definitions of war and peace; it was also the first project Nick Park worked on when he joined Aardman. The speechmaker in Babylon (the only character with dialogue) was voiced by Tony Robinson, also then living in Bristol.

Other films include Paradise Regained and Conversations by a Californian Swimming Pool, directed by Andrew Franks, longtime Aardman collaborator and the writer, composer, voice-actor and editor for Aardman’s series Rex the Runt, while David Anderson, who created Dreamless Sleep for the programme, worked for Aardman on the Sledgehammer video, released the same year.

MORPH at 50 (25 July)

A joy ride through the life and times of one of the first characters created by the Aards, still making mischief and beloved worldwide 50 years on.

Created in 1976 by Pete Lord and Dave Sproxton, Morph made his TV debut the following year in the children’s BBC programme Take Hart.

His early prototype, The Gleebies, had been created by Pete and Dave for the BBC Children’s show Vision On, designed for deaf children but enjoyed by everyone.

This very simply shaped character whose slapstick antics endeared him to generations of children and adults alike was later joined by his cream-coloured partner-in-crime Chas for The Amazing Adventures of Morph, a hugely popular 26-part TV series.

A regular fixture on children’s TV in the ’70s and ’80s, Morph and Chas recently reappeared in The Epic Adventures of Morph, a longer format series launched in 2020. SWEET DISASTER (23 July)

During the 1980s, Channel 4 executives Jeremy Isaacs and Paul Madden greenlit the production of a bold, experimental collection of contemporary animations which evolved from the channel’s collaboration with Aardman on the shorts series Conversation Pieces.

The result was Sweet Disaster, showcasing five short animated films that riffed on Cold War anxieties and shared quirky visions of the apocalypse.

Who are they? Like you don’t know! Bristol’s multi-awardwinning, internationally adored animation studio, based on Gas Ferry Road.

How did it all begin? Back in 1976, Peter Lord and David Sproxton, pals since schooldays, co-founded the studio with a vision to create distinctive animated content. Over the years it’s evolved from a small creative team into an employee-owned, globally recognised studio, celebrated for its craftsmanship, storytelling, humour and charm, and characters including Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Morph.

Share a few highlights: “Winning multiple Oscars and BAFTAs, and five Guinness World Record titles, including highestgrossing stop-motion film studio and most claymation feature films made by a single studio. Aardman’s work continues to set benchmarks in animation, blending artistry with innovation across film, TV, advertising, and interactive media.”

How are you celebrating? “With a year of celebrations showcasing the studio’s craft and legacy, culminating in the release of a new feature film, Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom in the autumn.

“Locally, we’re collaborating with Bristol Museums on Cracking Exhibition Gromit: 50 Years of Aardman in Bristol at M Shed which promises to be a must-see cultural moment, offering fans of all ages a behind-the-scenes look at Aardman’s creative process, iconic characters, and the studio’s deeprooted connection to Bristol. o, apparently they love Bristol Life magazine at Pizzarova, and have always enjoyed the Heroes series. I was delighted when Alex messaged me and said he wanted to create a very different interior for his new-look Pizzarova on Park Street.

‘Some very Colin Moody photos’ was what he was after – a sense of that real Bristol spirit.

What I was excited about after our first chat was that this particular pizzeria is perfectly placed as a jumping- off point for so many people’s nights out. I loved the idea of filling the walls with images that showed all kinds of ways that a night could take them, from slice to dance floor.

I was in. Here are some of the questions they asked, and my replies.

“You chose this space to host part of your ‘starting your night out’ exhibition – why and how does Pizzarova reflect the series?”

Great question. I’ve always been drawn to the places people hang out, where energy interchanges as they start their night. The Up All Night project, now a book of the same name, explores the grassroots places people built and continue to grow in this city. It starts with young people beginning their nightlife journey. Now they can do that here and feel that energy all around them. That’s magic.

I loved Alex and his belief that it was time to put up street photography in a big bold way around all these people having pizza.

Glimpses of where a night might go all around them. It’s such a clever meeting of an independent pizza place rooted in Bristol that wants to walk with me and its customers on this journey. Chat while Idles fans are screaming above you in the artwork and then book that gig on your phone. Makes the place feel instantly part of the hot fun that is Bristol on a night out.

And there are a few fun little photos in there too to liven up the chat, we hope. And I like how spontaneous it all feels. And inclusive.

Take this photo of Miss Dynasty, for example. Fabulous. At the Pride March a few years back. And you know what? I never knew till the framed work went up that their shadow has horns. Double fabulous.

“Have you always been Bristol-based?”

Here for 17 years now, same in London before that, but it’s the interweaved multiplayer feeling that Bristol gives that makes me want to keep working here, doing shows, making books to celebrate our cultures. London people still mostly wear masks and climb up and over you. Here we collaborate and want a collective betterment to occur.

Made a new friend recently and they popped into the show. They took one look at this sheep (I’ve sort of been waiting for people to notice the very satisfied look upon its face as it jumps the hurdle at a country show) in its high vis and he saw it as a tribute to the rave culture of the late ’80s, early ’90s. Boom! Love that. I hold up my fingers in that Pizzarova neon style to that interpretation

A brief detour from the questions. As I popped in to take a few shots of the show for this article I noticed this group of young women who’d arrived to collect their pizza. Their fashion stood out to me.

May they have the best nights out ever in this city.

Given that this show was only possible because of our long-running Bristol Heroes series I’m doing something leftfield here and declaring this magazine itself a hero, for allowing my street style to reach this new audience.

And thank you to all the readers who tell me how much they enjoy the stories every issue. It’s also nice that the one in this issue, left on the till table, was all about festivals. They feature a lot in the work selected here by Alex and myself.

“What is it about Bristol’s communities that make them the perfect subject?”

Take Stokes Croft, a place where so many communities bump up together. You can feel it. It’s a life force, and when it’s done here it will migrate to new spots. I’m a big fan of Cartier Bresson, the photographer who was drawn to the life force of people where ever he went, and every time I go for a wander I meet more and more people in this spider’s web of culture, ideas overlapping, faces mask-free, sharing little bits of their life in a generous way. People show, and they show up.

Gotta love that about our people. And you know it works cos so may students stay here, starting new webs.

Now these images, these two here from my new book I’ve done with my friend Jazz, only possible because I was given generous access to festivals to shoot (that was how I grew at this game) and to personal journeys, like a good friend’s mate who was able to get me and my camera into a fabulous stag night at the bear bar in Old Market.

So now Pizzarova Park Street and these incredible spaces are joined, by the photography. And I love that. It’s chemistry, baby.

“I see you have a mix of portrait and street photography; has that always been your style? Does one discipline feel more relevant today or do you have a preference when capturing certain events?”

Portraits are harder than street photo work. They feed one another, and you get the best portraits of all in a free style by approaching people on the street – open, not set up, just in the moment.

For me a good scene may come first, or maybe just a face in the crowd with a vibe that needs to be a portrait. You practice both, and keep the radar on for both, and see what feels natural to work with.

So, it’s both that matter. I would add I’m looking the same way at a gig as I do at a protest, for people expressing their love or hate, their emotion or their belief; it’s electric to be in those spaces. My advice is never just specialise in portraits, and never just photograph scenes of people. Step in, talk, engage, discover and get better shots. Let both disciplines inform your practice. They tell either a story of our time or the person’s individual story at that precise moment in time, and you need to both respect that and be free about it too.

Thanks to Dom who brought the drum and bass to Bristol again this year. Now also between the potted plants and the loos at Pizzarova Park Street. Every space can be a drum and bass space!

“How long did it take to put this collection together?”

Alex and I met here over pizza and bashed through some of the photos I was thinking of. I’m still very much alive to the night-out project so I had a few pieces in mind. I was so excited he loved the sheep photo, cos that’s mad, isn’t it?. Three-foot-high sheep on the wall, snapped like a cover shot, but it’s fun, and so Bristol.

If this was an article for The Guardian we could say it represents how the collective still contains individuals, or how Pizzarova understands that food goes from field to fork. But it’s not that sort of article so we

7 can just say it’s bloody cool to have the sheep up there, the rave sheep, unapologetically doing its thing, jumping that jump for all of us.

Here, though, is the centrepiece. I was contacted by Compass Presents a while back to ask if I could come and shoot their performance. Bristol Capoeira brought Banksy’s Mild Mild West mural to life just metres from where the original piece is located, as part of the Stokes Croft Calling festival. It’s one photo but when we realised we wanted to do one wall big we split it over two squares. Also keeps the cops away from that activist bear a little bit.

It’s such a fun image, and allows me to bring protest in as an idea into the show. Although all the images showing people defiantly partying are revolutionary acts!

Dear Pizzarova. Here is the last image for the show. It’s a pirate balloon at a drum-and-bass event in Castle Park.

Incidentally, that’s the tallest, highest building in the background.

It’s good for balancing the shot. But once again, my main interest is the fabulous pink pirate balloon.

Everything we do here is a little more West Country and more anarchistically funny when you dig down, and I love that.

Now, go get a pizza. Treat yourself.

As we approach the year’s mid-point it seems that we’re all on an exceptionally good collective reading streak, where almost everything we pick up turns out to be a fascinating curio or mindset-shifting work of insight. And while the extremes of weather might not always form a perfect counterpoint, the great thing about having five of us reading so widely is that our

You may be familiar with June-Allison and Jennifer Gibbons (otherwise known as The Silent Twins, absolutely worth some personal research) and the scarcely believable true story of their lives together, but beneath the sometimes sensationalised source there lies a surprising wealth of creative output – novels, plays, stories and more.

Discomania was written by Jennifer in 1980, before the twins were sent to languish in Broadmoor, and is an almost-indescribable novelistic fusion of futuristteenage rebellion, delightfully idiosyncratic prose and a jarring, almost despairing level of violence.

This reissue has been so lovingly produced, with such care taken to replicate every single joyously errant typewritten mis-key, that it forms a surprisingly moving document of a singular creative mind trapped in the most unfathomable circumstances.

Wow, Wapping Wharf – how has it already been ten years?

To celebrate its first decade, the Wharf ’s indie businesses are throwing a big public party from 5pm onwards on Friday 3 July, with food, drink and entertainment, including live music from Batala Bristol and The Ambling Band and a silent disco.

Since opening in 2016, the mixed-use neighbourhood of flats, hospitality and retail has become a major draw for locals and tourists alike, not least for the blue CARGO shipping containers.

CARGO was originally intended by Umberslade developer Stuart Hatton as a ‘meanwhile use’ for the site, to complement the businesses along Gaol Ferry Steps and Rope Walk, before the next phases of development could go ahead.

“We knew from the start that we wanted to create something that reflected Bristol and the dockside location, which would set it apart from the identikit developments up and down the country”, said Stuart.“Bristol is known for its independent streak – it’s a place that does things its own way – and we wanted to make the most of this. To be able to focus on smaller independent businesses which showed promise, but didn’t necessarily have strong financial backing, we decided to hold onto the buildings ourselves and share the risk with them.”

The containers won’t be here forever; Umberslade now has consent to build the final phases of the development, but container fans will be pleased to hear that they’ll probably stick around until at least 2028.

With restaurant food,says Dan, there’s a fine line between precise and precious

M

onday is my day off, and I often spend the best part of it ruining a white shirt.

To wear a white shirt in a restaurant is usually a sign of either optimism or stupidity. I frequently spend my Monday slurping a bowl of noodles with no dignity whatsoever. The first mouthful is always too hot, although I never wait. Broth and chilli oil freckling my shirt front, the proper head-down, heedless slurp that sends spray across me.

Sometimes, I do it alone, and sometimes with company, but always without performance and nothing to prove.

I could eat anywhere on my one day off. I run restaurants, and keep a list of places I’m desperate

to get to, both in Bristol and well beyond it. And still, most weeks, I choose noodles eaten somewhere I’m not responsible for anything. Because a bowl of noodles, taken properly, does something a tasting menu never quite manages. Steam rising, a loud and graceless slurp, and an hour later I’m a person again, ready for the six days that follow.

For those six days, I sit at an intersection, in the business of the opposite temptation. Polish.

Polish is seductive. It photographs well, and the industry rewards it – the guides, the feeds, the awards that go to the most immaculate.

Done a certain way, my job hinges on tweezers and dots and wiped rims, where the plate leaves the pass looking like it belongs in a museum. We have chased it, and we’ve spent money and hours and good temper making something

immaculate that reached the table looking beautiful – and watched it admired more than eaten.

Beneath the polish runs a tension every kitchen knows, but few admit to. A gap usually sits between what a chef wants to cook and what a guest wants to eat.

They overlap less than you’d hope.

A chef’s instinct pulls towards the ambitious, the technical, the plate they’re proud to send.

A diner, more often than not, wants to feel looked after and eat something they actually fancy. Somebody has to stand in that gap and referee, and in my restaurants, that’s me. The hard calls aren’t between good and bad, they’re between the dish that we’re excited about and the dish the guests really want. We don’t always get the balance right. Admiration is not the same as being fed.

It’s a trade that took me a long time to understand. What a restaurant actually sells is not food and wine. It is how you stand up after your meal. Lighter, looser, more yourself than when you first sat down. My Monday noodles do that for me. The dishes we’re often proudest of cooking, do not.

This isn’t to say that precision doesn’t matter. It matters

enormously. But there’s a difference between precise and precious. Precise is the broth seasoned just right. Precious is the broth seasoned just right, but fussed over until it loses its charm.

The restaurants I love best in Bristol aren’t the most polished.

They’re the ones that have worked out what they’re for – more interested in feeding you well than impressing you. Where the welcome softens you before the food arrives, where someone notices the tiredness in you and sends over a cold glass you didn’t ask for. That’s the texture I want at Bank and Lapin. Not to astonish for a single moment, but to send you back into the evening a touch brighter than when you arrived.

So, Monday. The steam from the bowl, and the shirt I’ll have to soak when I’m home. Nobody photographs those meals. In case of a heatwave, pour glass ’m writing this with rain hitting the window and the dog looking wistfully at the front door. It’s hard to believe that just a week ago we were in the middle of a heatwave. So, dreaming of a summer that may already have gone, here’s three drinks that we’ll be keeping on our menus until the sun pokes his face out again, If you’ve spent any time in San Sebastián or Bilbao, you’ll probably have come across Txakoli. If not, summer is the perfect time to make its acquaintance. Pronounced chakoh-lee, it began life as a humble farmhouse wine produced along the rugged Atlantic coastline of the Basque Country. The name is thought to derive from the Basque etxeko ain, meaning something along the lines of ‘enough for the household’ – a wine made for everyday family consumption rather than grand occasions.

Over time, Txakoli became closely associated with the region’s fishing communities, served in coastal taverns alongside cod, anchovies and squid. There’s a saying often repeated in food and wine circles: “what grows together, goes together”. The story of Txakoli takes that idea a step further. In some coastal areas, whale bones were reportedly repurposed to support vine-

growing structures, linking the region’s maritime and winemaking traditions in a way few other wines can match.

By the early 20th century, Txakoli was close to disappearing.

Competition from imported wines, rural depopulation and vine diseases all took their toll.

Its revival over the past few decades has been remarkable, driven by growers committed to preserving indigenous grape varieties and helped along by the rise of San Sebastián as one of Europe’s great food destinations.

Those growers include the Errasti family whose vineyards nestle among rolling hills, 90 metres above sea level and 5km from the Bay of Biscay. Their Antxiola is bright and ripe, and tastes of green apple, melon and key lime pie, finishing with Txakoli’s trademark salinity.

Alongside the Antxiola, we’ll be pouring the Txakoli Rosado from the seventh-generation Bodegas Ameztoi: crunchy and herbal with grapefruit, red apple, grass and strawberry leaf notes.

If you’ve tasted Txakoli before, you’ll likely remember its gentle spritz. Historically, this was simply

a byproduct of the way the wine was made. Bottled young, with fermentation not quite complete, small amounts of carbon dioxide remained trapped in the wine. Today, many producers intentionally preserve a little of that natural fizz because it lifts the wine’s bright citrus and green apple character while enhancing the saline freshness that makes it such a natural partner for seafood. It’s less “sparkling wine” and more a subtle nod to the Atlantic.

You’ll often see Txakoli poured from a height.

While it looks dramatic, the technique serves a purpose, helping to release aromas and accentuate its natural sparkle.

If all of this sounds a little like Vinho Verde, you’re absolutely right. Both wines come from lush, rain-soaked corners of the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula, where cooler conditions allow grapes to ripen slowly while retaining the acidity that makes them so refreshing. Contrary to popular belief, Vinho Verde, literally ‘green wine’, isn’t named after its colour but rather its youthful style and the verdant landscape from which it comes.

Vinho Verde have a slight natural spritz. We’re currently pouring a fantastic bottle from the legendary producer Niepoort: aromatic and vibrant, with notes of grapefruit and citrus peel, hints of bay leaf and a lingering, gently spicy finish.

And while we’re talking about Portugal, it’s impossible not to mention Porto Tónico. While much of the world was busy putting Aperol into a spritz, the Portuguese had quietly been enjoying something arguably just as good for decades. The recipe is wonderfully simple: white port, tonic, plenty of ice and a slice of citrus. Yet somehow the result is far greater than the sum of its parts.

The sweetness and subtle nuttiness of the port are balanced by the tonic’s bitterness, creating a drink that’s refreshing without being sharp and complex without feeling complicated.

Originally enjoyed as an aperitif in Porto and throughout the Douro Valley, Porto Tónico has gradually found fans far beyond Portugal’s borders as drinkers look for alternatives to the standard gin and tonic. On a hot summer afternoon, it’s the kind of drink that makes you wonder why you ever ordered anything else.

ust admit, there is something very pleasing about being next to water. The stuff on the ground, that is, not the stuff falling from the sky. Though even rain has it’s good points. When it comes to rivers, seas, oceans or ponds, they’ve all got something about them that soothes the soul. Must be something to do with the pattern of the waves, or the sounds of the breeze as it wanders along the shore.

Got thinking about this when the CS crew popped over to St George’s Park recently for a mooch around. Don’t know if you’re familiar with this friendly

part of the Bristol map, but if not, I can thoroughly recommend a visit.

It’s a real peach of a park.

Full of natural goodness.

It’s everything a gorgeous, green urban space should be, with gallons of trees, acres of grass, playpark for the kiddies, space for the older bods and, just in case it isn’t obvious from the opening remarks, it also has a wide open body of water just waiting to be walked around.

Used to be a boating lake, way back when, if memory serves.

As if all of that wasn’t enough to get you hotfooting it over to that fabulous section of the city, there’s more. Lots more. Which brings me rather neatly to this issue’s coffee shop of choice, the Bake Box; more of a kiosk than a café. No room indoors for tables and chairs, just a healthy helping of benches and tables nearby.

Oh, and the lake. Obviously.

To be honest, as coffee places go, this one is mild and modest.

Doing a fine line in ices, snacks, hot drinks and KitKats. But, as so often with things that warm the cockles and bring out the sentimental side, it’s not just

about the outside bits, the stuff you can see, sip and sit on. No, with this place, it’s more about what it represents. Though I should also point out that they get their coffee beans from somewhere nice, and they really are rather tasty. As is the coffee.

The reason I enjoy this particular piece of this particular park quite so much, is probably less to do with the fine things on offer at the kiosk, and more to do with the setting. You see, this neck of the woods is a relatively new one to me and mine. Feels like a newish discovery. The beginning of a new trail for us.

It happened because some lovely folk we know moved there, so now we visit on a regular basis. And as so often with this glorious city we all call home, it has been a real bonus to stumble upon yet another part of town which makes you smile, brings an extra added joy to urban life and works so well.

Narberth is often named as one of the UK’s best market towns; Saundersfoot as one of its best seaside destinations. Here’s how to get the best out of both in one stay Words by Deri Robins

E

veryone knows about Pembrokeshire’s big-hitters – the Tenbys, the St David’s, the Barafundle Bays, and so on. Luckily, however, for those who love them and would probably prefer this article not to be published at all, Saundersfoot and Narberth in East Pembs still slide ever-so-slightly under the radar. Neither are exactly unknown, as anyone trying to bag a parking space at the former in late July will tell you, but neither are you likely to drive into town, take one appalled look and go straight home again, as we once did at a rammed peak-season St Ives.

Set just outside the charming market town of Narberth, The Grove is rural boutiquery on a stick. Part of the Seren group, which also has Dollgellau’s Penmaenuchaf, Oxwich’s Beach House and Saundersfoot’s Lan y Môr, the accolades lavished on the hotel speak volumes.

Both the hotel and its restaurant hold several AA stars and rosettes. It has a Michelin Key. It’s been the overall winner in the Small Luxury Hotels of the World awards; this year it was named one of the best hotels in the UK by The Telegraph.

Sustainable? They were the first hotel in Wales to win a Green Tourism Gold.

The lovely whitewashed Georgian building is found at the end of a long driveway which winds through meadows and woodland; you’ll pass a pond, a Japanese-style cherry blossom tea garden and a walled vegetable garden. Beyond, the Pembrokeshire meadows stretch towards the pale, blue Preseli Hills; the perfect place to get your Celtic mythic on.

The hotel’s main entrance is a vast wooden doorway, almost like a church’s lychgate, except there’s a croquet set against the wall ready for use. I gave it a miss; I was keen to get to my room. Each of the 25 bedrooms offers a modern twist on the traditional Welsh country house, and there’s bags of vernacular in evidence in the public areas, too: Welsh rugs abound, there’s a slate-sided bar, chunks of Welsh coal under the glass of a table, lace, quilts and Welsh love spoons on the walls.

My room is roughly the same size as one of the meadows outside. The bathroom is so big that, quite genuinely, I got lost; took a wrong turn at the first set of cupboards and found myself heading back to the conservatory – yes, my room came with one of those, too. It opened to a curved path leading into the garden – ideal for a pre-prandial stroll before tucking into chef Dougie Balish’s tasting menu in The Fernery.

Dougie and his quietly masterful team take huge pride in the stories they tell through food, wine and warm Welsh hospitality. Think local produce with ambitious flavours and Asian inspiration: Llandeilo deer, Atlantic Edge oysters with wasabi, Thai lobster, rhubarb with yuzu.

Loved your glass of Velfrey Brut? The Grove can organise a tour of this local family-run vineyard.

The Grove is a destination in itself, and once you’ve experienced the unfeigned warmth of the welcome you may quite understandably decide to hole up here for your entire stay. However, it also makes the ideal base for East Pembs adventures, and if you can tear yourself away Saundersfoot is just an 20-minute motor down to the coast. It’s here – seamless link – that you’ll find Lan y Môr.

Lan y Môr means ‘by the sea’, and the restaurant fully delivers on its promise, bordering as it does the golden sands of Coppet Hall. The contemporary build reflects the curve of the beach and the waves, its floor-to-ceiling windows meaning you don’t lose an inch of the view.

In the kitchen are Hywel Griffith and Gez Jones, who between them have packed the menu full of Welsh ingredients and flavour. If you’re a stickler for tradition you can go down the startermains-pud route; if you’re the sharing kind you can have fun pick’n’mixing between the small and bigger plates. Kick off, perhaps, as we did, with frockles – Gower cockles dipped in batter and fried, with a kick of chilli sea salt and nori mayonnaise. We then ordered all seven of the small plates: soy glazed lamb ribs with hen-ofthe-woods mushrooms; Welsh rarebit, beery in its Tenby Brewing Co ale; sweetand-sour pork belly in a soft bao bun; cod wings, fresh and flaky within their crispy batter; spicy Cajun king prawns with tomato fondue; corn ribs in hoisin, and grilled Wye Valley asparagus. All far too much, of course – like Kate Bush’s Cathy, we were too hot, too greedy – but it’s always wise to over-order when it comes to tapas because you can take any remains home for a fabulous lunch the next day.

And don’t expect any of the usual ‘the plates will come to the table when chef is good and ready’ malarkey, because at Lan y Môr they are curated. The waiters think long and hard over which dishes to send out together, in which order, with just the right amount of time in between, so that you don’t fall on everything all at once like a feral raccoon in a dumpster.

The Grove offers the ultimate relaxed yet elegant rural escape; Lan y Môr is everything an elevated restaurant by the sea should be.

Different vibes, but with one important thing in common: both are run by hugely talented people, whose unpretentious friendliness is as Welsh as the old wooden spoons hanging on the walls.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE For its new immersive gorilla habitat, Bristol Zoo Project has transformed a former arboretum into a Central African forest landscape

D

esigned by landscape architects Grant Associates, the African Forest habitat provides a new home for the zoo’s western lowland gorillas – a species classed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Their natural habitat spans 700,000 square kilometres of central Africa rainforest – home to abundant shoots, roots, fruit, pulp and bark. Highly intelligent and social, these animals play a crucial role in maintaining forest health by dispersing seeds and shaping the landscape around them.

They were once largely safe from habitat loss there, the rainforests being fairly inaccessible to humans. More recently however, the habitats have been given over to palm oil plantations and mining. The accompanying infrastructure for these industries has made it easier for illegal poachers to hunt and transport bushmeat to the cities, and for human diseases – to which gorillas are highly susceptible – to spread from those cities into the forests.

Focused on retaining and integrating as many of the former arboretum’s established trees as possible, Bristol Zoo Project’s African Forest aims to counter the decline of its species numbers, creating a setting that closely mimics the sheltered forest conditions of Equatorial Guinea. A six-metre-wide moat wraps around the forest island, its geometry dictated by the roots and canopies of the existing trees. Embedded within its woodland edge, and built around a 150-yearold horse chestnut tree, is the Gorilla House.

Designed by architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, the house is almost five times the size of that of the zoo’s former site in Clifton. Here, two large indoor day gyms for the troop incorporate a climbing structure crafted from sustainably sourced Devon oak, alongside day beds, nests and areas for female and younger gorillas to climb higher up for safety and rest. The zoo is run by Bristol Zoological Society, a conservation and education charity that has cared for gorillas since the 1930s. Their work to protect these animals and other species extends far beyond the zoo. In Equatorial Guinea’s Monte Alén National Park for example, the charity works with local communities to protect critical forest habitats and the wildlife they support.

In partnership with local organisations, it helps to safeguard forests, monitor wildlife populations, and tackle the most pressing threats facing species today.

“Bristol Zoological Society tackles the most pressing threats facing species today” In recent weeks, the gorillas at the project have begun to explore their new external habitat for the first time – climbing, foraging and moving through the mature trees and varied terrain. They are accompanied in the space by other endangered species from the region: cherry-crowned mangabey monkeys, slender-snouted crocodiles, and a number of extremely threatened species of West African freshwater fish.

This however is just the start, with the African Forest experience an early phase of the wider landscape-led masterplan for Bristol Zoo Project, developed with Grant Associates. The 136-acre site will be transformed into a conservation-focused zoo where animals and visitors are immersed within naturalistic landscapes. This will include the new Central African Savannah, with lead species of black rhino and ostriches

joining giraffe, zebra and cheetah in a space taking its influence from the open savannah of northern Cameroon.

2026 is proving a milestone year for Grant Associates; the landscape architects were recently awarded the Design Excellence Award at this year’s Greater Bay Area Flower Show in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, one of Asia’s most high-profile international horticultural events. Designed by Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal winners Peter Chmiel and Chin Chen, Rainbow Garden: The Messenger’s Path combined a richly layered planting design with a strong mythological narrative concept centred on journey and transition.

The landscape architect practice works on projects across the globe, from the multi-award-winning Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, to Green City Kigali in Rwanda.

At the heart of each project is the practice’s recognition of the current climate and biodiversity emergency as the defining challenge of our time.

For this very reason, this very local initiative at Bristol Zoo Project is a very special one to the team at Grant Associates. Despite biodiversity declining at an unprecedented rate, the project offers hope that there is still time to change this story, and is testament to the vital role of conservation zoos in breeding, fieldwork, education and research in the protection of endangered species, both here and in the wild. ristol’s TrueStart is a remarkable business: dynamic, effervescent and relatively new. (It only got going eleven years ago.)

It’s also independent, family-run, and making quite the splash in a crowded space – the supermarket coffee aisles – by concentrating on good ethics, great quality, and unusual choices: their offer actually revolves around a top-notch instant coffee (yes, instant!), alongside a well-considered range of ground coffees and beans.

The guys behind it are wifeand- husband team Helena and Simon Hills. “We’ve been the fastest growing coffee brand – not just challenger brand, actual coffee brand – in the UK for two years in a row now”, Helena says. “We’ve tripled and then almost tripled again the size of the business. And in December we closed a Series A fundraiser with JamJar Investments, run by the founders of Innocent Smoothies. This is the beginning of a whole new chapter.”

As a student, part of Helena’s business management course took her to Columbia, which “had a real bad reputation, but I fell in love with the country. I didn’t actually drink coffee until I lived there, but it’s so much part of their buzzy culture that I started, and soon became very biased, thinking ‘Colombian coffee is the best in the world’.”

Later, taking part in Ironman Triathlons, the pair got into the

habit of drinking coffee before each training session – except this was giving Helena heart palpitations.

“I started to look into coffee and what it does to our brains and bodies, and how much we should really be drinking”, she says.

“There was a movement in the US at the time around clean coffee: how moulds can grow on it, and how it can be full of heavy metals.

The caffeine is variable as well, which explained why I sometimes felt jittery and other times not – and that got us into thinking about a coffee that’s quality-tested in a way no-one else was doing.

“Even now we test all of our coffee for caffeine consistency, for mycotoxin moulds, for pesticide residues, for heavy metals and antioxidant content. Basically, we buy the best quality coffee we can, then we quality-assure it. With TrueStart, you drink it, you feel good – but you don’t get a crash, and you don’t get the jitters.”

Naturally, TrueStart relies on a great supply chain, reinforced by regular trips to Columbia. “The coffee market is insanely volatile, and a really polarised industry, with Nestlé or Jacobs Douwe

Egberts at one end, offering lowquality product at high prices, and at the other lots of lovely little independent businesses doing really nice coffee, usually at a smaller scale. Right now we’re trying to sit in the middle: super-premium, really high quality, but accessible and inclusive. Something you don’t need a degree in coffee to appreciate.”

Helena and Simon’s ambitions for TrueStart are massive, but longterm. “We want to build an iconic household name, and believe it’s possible for a business to be a force for good and challenge the status quo”, she says. “I don’t like to accept the world the way it is.”

With a growing family, everything’s got a little less intense in recent years – “before, we worked 24/7” – and they’ve started to learn from “everything that goes wrong, which is loads.”

Like what? Well, their early branding was too sport-orientated – they began by “relentlessly building through word of mouth at running events”, while the latest version is much friendlier and less intimidating. Perhaps their biggest mistake was binning off their firstever product – an instant coffee – in favour of cold brew and beans.

“When we discontinued the instant coffee, our customers lost the plot,” Helena says. “I pride myself on how much we listen, and this is one example of us absolutely not listening. In fact, we dug our heels in – until it became an ongoing joke that every day, including two Christmas Days,

we’d have someone asking where it had gone. I don’t know why we did it now – but that mistake taught us so much.”

Today they offer barista-grade instant coffee, beans, ground coffee, coffee bags, and – a fresh format! – coffee concentrate. “Instant coffee is worth a billion pounds a year in this country as a grocery category alone, and is dominated by the big boys, so it’s ripe for disruption,” says Helena. “It’s a very different world to beans, where you’ve got smaller local roasters doing their thing.”

In terms of doing good, TrueStart is now a B Corp – meaning an independent organisation applies a gold standard to their holistic contribution and impact, prioritising social and environmental performance – which is an American tech idea that’s now popular amongst the cooler food brands, and has deeper roots in indie-loving Bristol than most of the UK. “We liked the idea that, as we scaled, there’d be a framework holding us accountable in terms of ethics,” Helena says. Indeed, she now co-hosts Purpose Fest – “the UK’s first festival for B Corps, based here in Bristol” – and cool collabs have come of it, like the True Coffee co-branded flavour of Marshfield Farm ice-cream.

And then there’s JamJar, the investment outfit run by the Innocent founders. Their portfolio includes Tony’s Chocolonely and Lucky Saint alcohol-free beer: cool challenger brands they believe a) will be future category leaders and b) will try to make the world a better place.

They’re now funding the next stage of TrueStart’s development to the tune of… well, we’re not quite sure, but multi-millions of pounds would seem fair. This will allow them to employ new staff, and really push the real-life engagement that started it all. This summer alone they’ll be the official coffee partner at every Tough Mudder, every Great Run event, the London Marathon…

“We wouldn’t have been able to invest in this level of brand awareness without that extra cash,” Helena says, and it allows them to pillage their ‘Rogue Ideas’ spreadsheet for further ideas too.

In other words, don’t be surprised to spot a TrueStart hot air balloon gliding overhead sometime soon…

NEW APPROACHES TO BIG ISSUES

Next to Bristol Temple Meads, on the site of the old Royal Mail sorting office, a new home for the UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL has been rising – the centrepiece of its Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus

W

hen the building opens in September, it will become a place where different academic disciplines connect with each other, industry, and local communities to develop new approaches to big issues. It will house teaching and research across business, innovation, digital engineering, artificial intelligence, quantum and more.

More than just a physical space, the building is designed for the University to collaborate with partners to deliver cutting-edge research and innovation. At its heart, the Bristol Innovations Zone will create opportunities for businesses and organisations to access the University’s unique research expertise, facilities and talent, supported by funding from the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.

Parts of the campus are already open, including The Sheds at TQEC – a former gasworks site on Avon Street which has been reimagined as a powerhouse of creative and digital innovation. Just up the same road, Bristol Dental School has been training tomorrow’s practitioners since 2023, so far delivering more than 90,000 free dental appointments to the community.

TQEC also provides new spaces for communities to work with the University to address local, national and global challenges. These civic spaces build on the work of the University’s micro-campuses in Barton Hill and Hartcliffe and Withywood, which deliver community-based teaching and research.

The new campus has enabled the expansion of the low-carbon Bristol Heat Network, and it’s one of the first times in the UK that a building will be capable of exporting heat from its own computer servers

and cooling system back into a citywide network, helping to heat other buildings and reduce carbon emissions. During construction, over 50% of the workforce have been locally employed and it has supported over 3,500 weeks of in-work training for more than 100 apprentices.

Billed as the catalyst for one of the UK’s largest urban regeneration projects, the new campus sits at the heart of Bristol Temple Quarter, which is set to deliver new homes,

jobs and opportunities for the city and region. It’s directly connected to the new station entrance at Temple Meads on one side and a new harbour walkway leading into the city on the other, both due to open this September.

“2026 really is a landmark year for the University of Bristol”, said Professor Judith Squires, deputy vicechancellor, provost and university lead for the new campus. “As we prepare to open our new campus in Temple Quarter, we will also be inviting our community to celebrate our 150th birthday by joining us at events in the city and learning more about our history and future.

“We look forward to sharing more details about this in due course, but what is clear is the University of Bristol’s place in the city and its role in shaping an ever-changing world, remains constant.”

ON THE WATERFRONT Plans to redevelop the Canons Wharf site on Harbourside have been approved by Bristol Council, paving the way for a major transformation of the landmark building. The development includes the distinctive crescent-shaped structure overlooking the amphitheatre, the circular building behind it, and the connecting link building.

Originally built in the 1990s as the HQ of Lloyds Bank, the complex was sold in 2024 to property company Kinrise. The new owners intend to convert the Grade-II site into a modern mixed-use destination that combines workspace, cultural attractions, and public amenities.

According to the developers, the project will deliver around 197,000 square feet of high-quality office accommodation while also creating

COURT FAVOURITE

A new chapter has begun for Ashton Court Mansion as the Bristol Historic Buildings Trust (BHBT) makes plans for to restore the historic property and eventually place it into community ownership. The Grade-I building, which dates back to the 14th century, has suffered years of neglect and has remained on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk register for more than a decade.

To support future restoration work, the mansion will start hosting private and public events. Organisers hope that exhibitions, cultural activities, and special occasions will generate income while encouraging greater public engagement with the site. The property is also expected to open during this year’s Bristol Balloon Fiesta.

The City Council has welcomed the move, describing it as a major step toward securing the building’s future.

Discussions continue regarding a proposed 125-year lease that would allow BHBT to take long-term control of the mansion, while fundraising efforts remain a key priority.

Planned improvements include repairing the roof, upgrading heating and electrical systems, and addressing drainage problems. The overall project is expected to take many years and require substantial financial investment.

BHBT leaders believe community involvement will be essential to the mansion’s success. A community share scheme planned for July this year will give local residents the opportunity to invest directly in the restoration project. WOODLANDS This quietly grand coastal villa speaks volumes about Portishead’s importance as a Victorian seaside resort Words by Ursula Cole

W

hat makes a house qualify as a villa? The definition appears to be that on the whole, a villa is an upscale, detached affair with generous outdoor space, often used as a luxurious retreat or country estate, set back from public roads and surrounded by expansive gardens.

It’s fair to say that this exquisite six-bedroom Portishead house, found on the highly prized Woodlands Road within the Eastwood conservation area, effortlessly ticks the villa criteria. It’s just a short distance from the seafront and lake grounds, while the nearby Art Deco heated lido is ideal for year-round swimming.

Woodlands has wonderful views across the Severn Estuary to the Welsh coastline; its gardens are large, its rooms spacious, with the bonus of that extraordinary light you only ever find in coastal locations streaming through the windows of all three storeys.

Even by villa terms, it’s special. Woodlands has been recognised as “a distinctive and important building in the conservation area”, and is considered to be a locally valued heritage asset. The house amply reflects the glory days of Portishead as a Victorian seaside resort and is described in Bond and Fardon’s 1855 guidebook as being “built in the Grecian style” as a “commodious house for lodgings”.

One final historical nugget before we take the tour. In 1832, Bristol Corporation created a small landing slipway below The Royal Hotel (now The Royal Inn) on Pier Road to encourage more visitors to come to Portishead, either by sailing in themselves or travelling by steamboat. The slipway was at the end of Woodlands Road.

The quiet, leafy lane is part of the England Coast Path, with the eponymous woodland bordering one side and views of the coastline to the other, accentuated by its raised position.

After entering through the gated driveway you’ll pass through the pretty front gardens to reach the front of the house. Handsome though this is in itself, the facade belies the enormous character and charm that becomes obvious as soon

as you step into the inner lobby, with its original arched sash windows.

From here you walk directly into the 28ft open-plan dining/family room and kitchen, painted in a powder pink that somehow manages to be both contemporary and period-appropriate, beautifully complemented by decorative floor tiles underfoot. The south-facing front means you can look forward to softly lit breakfasts here in the early morning light.

On the other side of the hallway, the sitting room is equally spacious, with parquet wooden flooring and a deep bay window overlooking the gardens. French windows open to a balcony overlooking the coast, and the room is kept cosy during the colder months by a log burner.

A central staircase climbs elegantly through the core of the house, softly illuminated by a stained-glass window. Four double bedrooms unfold across the upper landing, each with captivating views, either of the coastline or the woodland treetops.

The lower-ground level makes a flexible space, ideal for stashing guests or renting out to tenants as a self-contained annexe; it has its own entrance, two double bedrooms, a kitchen and two bathrooms.

Outside, the gardens are multi-tiered. The lower, flatter section is lawned, edged with deep borders of perennials, while a greenhouse and raised beds hold the promise of self-sufficient gardening. The top garden drinks in the morning sunshine, with paths weaving down through the

lawns; nearby woodland offers a direct path down to the coastline below.

Woodlands Road is situated to the north of Portishead centre, directly on the estuary boundary. It’s close to Portishead Marina, which has a broad selection of restaurants and offers a scenic walking route to the Victorian high street.

Bristol is around half an hour away by car, and while scepticism on the matter is perhaps understandable given its long and chequered history, work on the trainline linking Portishead to Bristol Temple Meads is now underway, and expected to be running by 2028.

The Bristol author and filmmaker has spent his career making documentaries and writing books about cinema – especially the movies of Alfred Hitchcock

I

’ve always loved stories, whether it’s through television, books, podcasts or film history”, says Tony.

“I’m fascinated by the way films, particularly those by Alfred Hitchcock, shape culture and memory.”

His latest book, A Century of Hitchcock: the Man, the Myths, the Legacy, is published this month.

I went to school and college in Bristol, which gave me a

strong sense of identity and love for the West Country. Later, I studied zoology at the University of Reading, while at the same time developing my love for film, especially the work of Hitchcock.

My first job was researching for David Attenborough for

the BBC Natural History Unit in Bristol. That led me to travel around the world filming in countries such as India, Nepal, the Caribbean and South America. After that, I moved to California for a couple of years, where I interviewed people who worked with Hitchcock, which led to books on the making of Marnie and The Birds.

Hitchcock endures because he understood audiences

better than almost any director in history. His career spans the history of cinema from silent films, through talkies to the golden age of Hollywood.

He knew how to manipulate emotion, suspense, fear and desire in a universal way. His films are endlessly watchable because every camera movement, every edit and every silence means something. You can revisit them decades later and still discover new layers.

Like most complicated figures, the truth about his

real character probably lies somewhere in the middle of the rumours. He could certainly be controlling, displaying the hallmarks of an auteur director, but some portrayals simplify him into a caricature. My new book draws on unpublished interviews and archival documents that reveal a far more nuanced man, one who avoided confrontation but also didn’t like collaborators saying no to him. I wanted to move beyond sensationalism and look at the evidence more carefully.

today still borrow his techniques, subjective camera work, suspense editing, psychological storytelling, even the idea of the wrongfully accused man on the run. You can see his influence everywhere from Jaws to Oppenheimer. He also understood branding long before filmmakers became celebrities. Hitchcock himself became part of the entertainment.

Hitchcock was a wine connoisseur and became a

member of the Chevalier du Tastevin in 1960. A couple of years later, he wrote to Bristol wine merchant Ronald Avery, saying how difficult it was to import wine to California. This letter was only rediscovered by Avery’s granddaughter in 2018.

As I did my degree in zoology,

Hitch had quite a few connections with Bristol.

Cary Grant, one of his favourite leading men, was born here, and starred in Suspicion, Notorious, To Catch a Thief and North by Northwest. Hitchcock loved Grant’s sophistication and debonair good looks; he was the man he wanted to be. Hitchcock was also famously interested in food and wine, and I think Bristol’s historic links to trade and cinema culture make it an unexpectedly Hitchcockian city in many ways. Bristol has always encouraged people to be creative, whether it’s in films, books, animation, theatre or music.

I live in Clifton, but before that I lived in BS1; I loved being in the centre of everything. My first house was in Redland. which I enjoyed for the leafiness and the foxes in the back garden.

I was fascinated by the animal references in both Marnie and The Birds. The Birds looks at what happens when nature turns against humanity. Marnie is even more psychological; Sean Connery’s character is a zoologist, and the film is very much about instinctual behaviour.

Like Hitchcock, I’m a champagne and white wine aficionado. I do like cracking

What’s fascinating is that many of the Hitchcock trademarks are already there – the voyeurism, the guilt, the ‘Hitchcock blonde’, the visual storytelling and the morally ambiguous characters. You can see a young filmmaker absorbing German Expressionism and beginning to invent what would later become known as the Hitchcock style.
