MP’s ‘serious concerns’ over plans for 260 homes Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy has lodged her objection to Homes England’s proposals to build 260 homes on Brislington Meadows.

Homes England is nevertheless pressing ahead and has lodged an outline application with the council. The site is 9.6 hectares and the scheme includes 30% affordable housing, with access off Broomhill Road.

In her objection, Kerry McCarthy said: “We know from the chief executive of Avon Wildlife Trust that Brislington Meadows is an important habitat for wildlife which also provides vital access to nature for local people.

“I have serious concerns about proposals to develop this land as it goes against Bristol's commitment to tackle the ecological emergency and ensure that at least 30% of the land in Bristol is to be managed for the benefit of wildlife by 2030.

“We have a duty to address Bristol's housing crisis, but this cannot be at the expense of protecting the natural environment which once lost, cannot be replaced.

“There are more suitable locations, including other brownfield sites elsewhere in Bristol East constituency, that can be used to meet Bristol's housing need without having to develop this greenfield site.

Development is not supported by Bristol City Council and Mayor Marvin Rees has announced his administration's opposition to building on this site.

“I also understand that

Brislington Meadows' allocation is likely to be updated in a future iteration of the Local Plan so it would have been protected from development.

“As any development on this site jeopardises the important ecological role it currently plays, I am opposed to any development occurring here.

If development is to go ahead, I would push for as much of the natural environment and habitats as possible to be protected.”

Jonathan Rowe, chair of Brislington Conservation and History Society, is also among the 160+ objectors so far. He said: “If the development went ahead, another green space would be lost, in an area which has already lost so much. There is also an issue with drainage and potential flood risk and the huge impact more houses would have on the community and services, such as increased traffic.

There is currently only one doctors’ surgery serving the whole of Brislington, including Broomhill and St Anne's.”

Mr Rowe added: “It is hard to believe today but Brislington was once called ‘the prettiest village in Somerset’. The proposed

development would be yet another nail in the coffin for Brislington which we can well do without.”

Homes England says the city council is currently unable to demonstrate that it has delivered the number of homes needed or has a fiveyear supply of land to provide the number of homes needed.

The agency says the development will be a sustainable neighbourhood with nature prioritised, including creating new habitats, new play spaces and new pedestrian and cycle routes: “Through careful on and off-site design and management, the scheme will also be able to achieve an overall gain in biodiversity value which responds to the ecological emergency. Homes England is committed to see a 10% biodiversity net gain (on and off site). The application therefore provides a balanced response to the city’s priorities as part of the overall scheme design and approach and accords with the development plan, and therefore should be supported.”

The planning reference is 22/01878/P. The deadline for comments is 29th June.

MP recognised in Queen’s Enforcing right turn ban Birthday Honours Chris Skidmore, the MP for Kingswood, has been awarded the OBE for Parliamentary and Public Service in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Mr Skidmore has been the constituency’s Conservative MP since May 2010.

He has held various ministerial roles and in 2019 became a Privy Councillor, advising the Queen on the carrying out of her duties.

As a former energy minister, he signed the UK's net zero target by 2050 into law.

Following public consultation, Bath & North East Somerset Council has applied to the Department for Transport for enforcement powers at hotspots where restrictions are regularly contravened.

The sites approved by the Cabinet for ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) enforcement include four in Bath and the junction of High Street/Bath Hill/Temple Street in Keynsham, where there is a banned right turn (subject to further review) It is anticipated that the council will

receive designated enforcement powers during the summer.

Meanwhile motorists in B&NES are advised that since 31st May, the penalty charge for driving in bus lanes or through bus gates has increased from £60 to £70.

It has been introduced by the Government.

However, while fines are increasing the discount period is being extended. To receive a 50% discount, drivers will now be given 21 days instead of 14 to pay their Penalty Charge Notice.

Essential verge cutting under way in B&NES Bath & North East Somerset Council has begun essential highway verge grass cutting in rural areas. More than 1,000km of highway verge will be cut back over the next six weeks. Cllr David Wood, Cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “Verge cutting is important for the safety of road users to make sure they have good visibility at junctions. “However, as we’ve done in previous years, we’ll leave suitable areas uncut for longer periods to encourage wildflowers, bees and other pollinators to thrive which is better for the environment.”

Celebrating 25 years of Keynsham Music Festival This year marks 25 years of Keynsham Music Festival and what better way to celebrate the anniversary than being back together in Memorial Park after three years.

Six months of roadworks during build of Keynsham’s new recycling hub Brace yourself for roadworks and traffic diversions in Keynsham as the next phase of work gets under way on the construction of the new state-of-the art waste and recycling centre.

From ths week there will be a period of up to six months when essential road and utility works will be carried out as part of the construction of the multi-million-pound Keynsham Recycling Hub. From time to time, there will be closures, partial closures and diversions in place along Pixash Lane from the junction with the A4 Bath Road to the junction with Ashmead Road to allow work by utility companies.

Bath & North East Somerset Council says its contractor

Farrans will be carefully scheduling works to reduce the level of disruption. There will parking restrictions along a short stretch of Ashmead Road to ease traffic flows and access to Pixash Lane will be maintained for residents and businesses.

Visitors to the Pixash Household Waste and Recycling Centre are advised to use the signposted route via Broadmead Lane roundabout and Ashmead Road.

From today (Wednesday) access to the recycling centre will be via a new entrance on Pixash Lane, next to the usual entrance which will be closed to allow for the installation of a new electricity substation. This will ensure residents can continue using the recycling facilities safely and easily until the new public reuse and recycling centre opens later this year. The new entrance and short stretch of road linking into the recycling centre will be two-way and used by both the public and the council’s operational vehicles for entering and exiting the site.

Inside the site, traffic flow will be one way. Residents in cars and with trailers will drive clockwise to the recycling containers and leave via the new roadway and exit gates.

These changes will create more queueing space.

LETTERS Some cyclists will never be happy Dear Editor There were again a couple of letters in The Week In (Issue 732) regarding the existing and proposed cycle path along Keynsham Road. It does seem some cyclists won't be happy whatever is done.

One states we should get out of our tin boxes with most of us doing less than five miles.

Unfortunately I do much more than five miles and I couldn't do my job if I did not drive.

Keynsham Road has become a lot busier since the bus from North Common/Oldland to Wellsway School was removed, hence more parents having to drive children to the school.

Yes, cyclists have every right to use the road if they so wish but it must be safer on the cycle path than having cars, buses and trucks squeezing past?

I am in no way against cyclists but I cannot see why when the majority using the road do so very slowly why they cannot use the cycle path; many do with no problems whatsoever.

I was behind a large lorry in Pucklechurch on Thursday being held up by a very slow cyclist who again refused to use the cycle path next to Ashfield Prison, causing much frustration both ways.

I too hope with the council being awarded a vast amount, a safe cycle route along Keynsham Road is created so all can use the road safely.

Commemorating those who served Dear Editor Next May will mark the 60th year since the end of National Service, which affected over two million young men from 1947 onwards.

Those young men must now be in their late 70s or more and will soon be as rare as hen's teeth.

I would like to see some sort of

commemoration of the way in which those lads did what they were told to do to preserve our interests around the world after the men who had fought the Germans and the Japanese took a well-earned rest.

I am sure there are some in Keynsham or the surrounding area who are qualified to discuss this idea with me and perhaps devise some ways in which we could celebrate what was for some the best two years of their life. I'll bet there are some good stories to share too!

Saturday 14th May: didn’t run. On Saturday 21st May I decided to catch the bus one hour earlier (the 18.00 from Keynsham Church) but … it didn’t run! Fortunately that day the 19.00 service did run.

I appreciate there is a shortage of drivers but surely the last bus of the evening should have more priority? Is this the most unreliable service in the Bristol area, I wonder.

Dear Editor I am convinced that the existing ‘throughabout’ has certainly not made things better and, to my mind, has been a total waste of almost £7m of taxpayers’ money.

It is still necessary to queue at red lights – now with eight lanes of traffic stopped at the same time. There have also been accidents there one of them fatal.

I sincerely hope we have heard the last about any further time and money spent on these wasteful, expensive and dangerous ideas.

Praise for council’s StreetCare team Dear Becky A resident recently emailed me to ask whether the hedgerow along a footpath behind his house could be trimmed back to allow him to watch the wildlife, one of his rare pleasures as he is registered disabled with various other health issues.

The hedgerow had become very overgrown which had been preventing this resident from accessing the bird feeders to the front of his house. I sent an email to South Gloucestershire Council’s StreetCare team and that same day they visited this gentleman’s property to cut back ivy and vegetation and even lowered the bird feeders to make them more accessible.

The resident was extremely grateful to the guys at StreetCare who were very courteous and polite. It’s not often that StreetCare get praise, but credit where it’s due, they came up trumps for this resident.

There were 1920 Speedway and 1950 race machines on display, plus a full range of other production models from Hanham Road. How did this one creep in? It was not an entrant to our event, although I did have a good chat with its owner as to its Soviet Bloc origins. Next year hope to see you again, and let’s keep it local.

Remembering John Holman The funeral took place at Westerleigh Crematorium last Wednesday of John Holman, who owned the popular Tollgate Teashop at Dyrham for more than 30 years.

John and his wife Lesley gave up running it in 2013 and retired to Wick.

John’s funeral was attended by many colleagues and friends who knew him from his many interests and local projects.

His preferred mode of transport for his final destination was his much-loved motorbike and sidecar.

Appeal for tools for Ukraine Brislington-based charity Hope for Ukraine is appealing for people to donate their tools to people in need in Ukraine.

Since the first delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Chernivtsi, the charity organisers have had a request for tools. They say: “People in Ukraine are looking to rebuild, and anything they could use has been looted and stolen so they currently have nothing.

“Check your sheds, toolboxes, and junk drawers - from hammers and saws, to nuts, screws and bolts; as long as they're not rusty and in good condition, we would be happy to take them off your hands. The only things we are not asking for are power tools.”

In support of the charity, Keynsham Repair Café volunteers will be helping to collect tools this Saturday (11th June) from 10am until 11.45am in the front garden of the Baptist Church on Keynsham High Street.
