'D like to think, as a proper community newspaper, that we do well in championing local residents, independent businesses and important causes in the area.

Which is why, and I’ve said it before, we should be doing more to support independent businesses in the city. And that’s a commitment that I’m really trying hard to do, even if I have to go out of my way to do so.

I recently had a chat with a café owner who explained that the state of the hospitality industry can leave businesses making as little as 5p profit on every pound spent with them. Costs including VAT, increasing overheads, and higher wages, all mean business

owners are being squeezed far more than ever. It’s no wonder that many continually consider their positions, and whether it’s worth continuing.

Many companies don’t have the deep pockets that we may expect them to have – they run on a short-term basis, some bringing in just enough to cover their costs and leave a little in the bank account in case of emergencies.

But chances are, that emergency pot is continually used to top up wages, pay for that unexpectedly higher energy bill or putting it towards their now increased business rates.

The issue being that even if the business could afford the high rents for some city centre premises, they’d need to commit to that before they even have a single customer through the door.

And that’s where it gets really tricky – opening a new store can easily cost tens of thousands of pounds, and apart from hopes and dreams, in the current state of the economy, there’s no guarantee there will be a solid return on the investment.

Many will say that it’s always been that way. You’ve got to be in it to win it. But I can see why people

are becoming uncertain about whether they want to continue their business.

It’s worth considering when you next head out to grab a coffee that the local independent will do a lot better out of your £3/4 compared to the larger chain, and in all honesty, you’ll probably get better quality, politer service and a nicer experience. They are grateful you’ve chosen to spend your hard-earned pennies with them – it really does make a difference.

The high street is starting to fill up again, but we've got to make sure it's with the shops and businesses we actually want in there, and to do that, we have to make sure we use them.

JOLLY’S in Bath is now due to reopen next March as restoration and redevelopment of the iconic Milsom Street store is taking much longer than anticipated.

Since the store closed in February 2025 after serving Bath for more than 200 years, extensive restoration work and repairs have been taking place.

Bath & North East Somerset Council owns the site which Morleys Stores will be taking over, keeping the Jolly’s name, once work is complete.

Initial plans would have seen a partial reopening in March of this year. However, in March, Morleys confirmed that the store was due to fully reopen in October.

Now the reopening has been pushed back by another five months.

The company released a statement this week: “Morleys Stores is delighted to confirm that Jolly’s Bath will reopen its doors in March 2027, marking a significant moment for the city and the future of one of the country’s most historic department stores.

“The reopening follows an extensive programme of restoration and redevelopment across the landmark building, parts of which date back more than 250 years.

High Court challenge is launched over Bath LTN A RESIDENTS’ group in Bath has begun legal action against Bath & North East Somerset Council over its decision to make the Lower Lansdown Liveable Neighbourhood permanent.

The Heart of Lansdown Conservation Group (HOLCG) has filed a statutory challenge in the High Court against the Traffic Regulation Order that formalised the scheme, which was first introduced under an Experimental TRO in November 2023. A Liveable Neighbourhood is also known as a low traffic neighbourhood, or LTN. According to the group, the case is being brought on behalf of hundreds of local residents and is supported by witness statements and other evidence from people living in the area.

The central argument of the challenge is that the permanent scheme has increased dangers for pedestrians, schoolchildren, cyclists and drivers by diverting traffic onto residential streets that are not suitable for a significant rise in vehicle movements, including roads outside a school.

The group says that when the council permanently closed Winifred’s Lane and banned right turns into Lansdown Crescent from Cavendish Road, it removed two key northbound routes

and redirected traffic around a narrow residential loop inside the Liveable Neighbourhood.

It says the route includes blind bends, missing pavement and overhanging trees, and is used by parents walking children to school.

HOLCG also alleges flaws in the council’s decision-making process, including reliance on incorrect monitoring data in its report and during scrutiny, dismissal of safety reports, and failure to follow its own policies on cycle infrastructure guidance.

The challenge also claims the council failed to address risks to schoolchildren from displaced traffic, amounting to a breach of the Public Sector Equalities Duty, and argues that the authority relied on an expedited legal route for the TRO when it was not entitled to do so.

A spokesperson for the group said: “Our legal challenge

questions the legality of the council’s decision and process.

“We go to court out of deep concern about B&NES’ Lib Dem council not respecting the overwhelming views of residents and rejecting local democracy.

“73% of local residents, representing hundreds of people directly affected by the closure of Winifred’s Lane and living close by, objected to the council making permanent a so-called Liveable Neighbourhood scheme which they had trialled for 15 months.

“This is a failure by a council to hear local voices – not least when the concerns relate to safety and especially that of schoolchildren.

“It’s with sadness that we are going to the High Court to have this appalling and unsafe traffic scheme properly challenged. But after over two years of trying to have councillors listen to us, we have no other option.

“We have shown the council that the traffic scheme is unsafe for pedestrians, schoolchildren, cyclists and drivers. We have provided extensive independent data, videos of cars mounting pavements, pictures of crashes and a petition signed by over 3,000 people.

“Traffic increased on multiple residential roads, notably +880% north on Sion Road outside a junior school, reflecting over 600,000 more vehicles sent past junior schools over 430 days.

“We have also shown councillors other options which are pragmatic and realistic, but all to no effect. This highly concerning council decision was taken despite its own data showing the trial objectively failed the goals set out in the Full Business Case provided to the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) in September 2024. How is this possible?”

Councillor Manda Rigby (Liberal Democrat, Bathwick), cabinet member for communications and community at Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “The council carried out a comprehensive consultation process and all the information about this is available on the website. The council is reviewing the evidence and intends to vigorously contest this challenge.”

‘Critical intervention’ to protect public in centre Becky Feather Reporter

URGENT conservation repairs have been approved at Arlington House in the city centre following a report highlighting the “significant” risk to public safety.

The Grade I listed site, where there are apartments above shops, was fenced off for some months after masonry fell from a balustrade last June.

Any loose material that was an immediate safety risk has been removed but without repair and correction, or failure to undertake repairs, the public would be exposed to danger along with the risk of further deterioration of the Grade I listed building, according to a report submitted to Bath & North East Somerset Council.

application form that work had begun last August and there had been “many discussions” with the council about the masonry issues since last summer.

“Many planning and heritage officers at B&NES have been party to the discussions and this application is putting a formal request in based on all the discussions with regards to the repair work and to address the possible danger to the public on the pedestrian areas below with the possibility of falling masonry, some of which has already occurred.”

The report accompanying the application, headed Urgent Façade Masonry Repairs, said that because of the building’s location within one of Bath’s busiest pedestrian areas, “the risk to public safety is significant”.

“This listed building application has been created based on the concerns of the building owners, the public and indeed by B&NES themselves because of the nature of the latest deterioration and masonry falls at Arlington House down onto Stall Street in particular.

“Approval of this listed building application is not just a matter of routine maintenance; it is a critical intervention to protect both public safety and the irreplaceable heritage of Bath.”

The report said recent inspections had revealed “significant deterioration and instability in the stonework, especially along Stall Street, one of Bath’s busiest pedestrian thoroughfares”.

“Without immediate, conservation-led repairs, there is a real and pressing risk of further falling masonry, endangering residents, workers, and countless visitors each day.

“The proposed works are carefully designed to be the minimum necessary intervention, using traditional materials and skilled craftsmanship to stabilise, repair and preserve the building’s most significant historic features.

“By acting now, we not only eliminate a clear safety hazard but also secure the long-term future of a Grade I listed landmark, sustaining Bath’s status as a World Heritage Site.”

The report added: “Given the risks associated with delaying essential conservation works, there is a clear and pressing need for the application to be approved so that timely action can be taken to protect both the asset, the public on the streets below and the wider townscape it enriches.”

News in Brief Plans for dog daycare venue in Larkhall A dog day care business is planning to open a centre on land next to Larkhall Athletic Football Club. An application has been lodged with B&NES Council by Central Bark Dog Daycare Bath.

The application form gives the address of the site as Powsfield, next to the club at Valley View Road. The plans include a timber building for use in bad weather and to accommodate an office.

Overnight road closures for utility works Weston Road at Lower Weston in Bath will be closing for four nights for utility works.

Leep Electricity Networks Ltd needs to carry out excavations over a 15-metre stretch to create a new high-voltage electric supply connection for the former gas works site, which is being redeveloped for housing.

B&NES Council has approved the temporary closure of Weston Road from its junction with Park Gardens, extending south-east for approximately 60 metres.

The order runs from Tuesday 26th May for a maximum period of six months, but the road will only be closed when traffic signs are in position. The works are anticipated to take place over four nights between 7pm and 6am. During the closures, a diversion will be in place via the remainder of Weston Road, Park Lane, the A4 Upper Bristol Road, A431 Newbridge Hill, Combe Park, Weston Lane, Weston Road, and vice versa.

Inspectors find urgent and emergency care concerns at RUH Becky Feather Reporter

THE Care Quality Commission has re-rated urgent and emergency care at the Royal United Hospital in Bath as requires improvement following an inspection.

The health watchdog carried out the inspection last October after receiving concerns about overcrowding and safety issues in the emergency department.

Inspectors found three breaches of regulations relating to patient care and treatment, staffing, and management of the service.

This week, the RUH said the department has been experiencing the highest ever demand levels and it is taking steps to improve care and support for patients.

The CQC rates services according to how safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led they are.

The emergency department’s rating for caring has been downgraded from good to requires improvement; effective is re-rated as good, while safe, responsive and well-led have all been re-rated as requires improvement.

The overall rating for Royal United Hospital is unaffected and remains as requires improvement.

The rating for the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust is also unaffected and remains rated as good.

This week, Catherine Campbell, CQC deputy director of hospitals for secondary and specialist care in the South West, said: “When we inspected urgent and emergency care at Royal United Hospital Bath, we found a department under enormous and unsustainable pressure, but staff

were still working as hard as they could under the circumstances to try and provide safe care and treatment to people.

“The most pressing concerns were around safety.

The department didn’t have enough senior doctors overnight, falling below national guidelines, and nursing vacancy and sickness rates were high.

“This left gaps in cover that leaders struggled to fill, and when agency or bank staff were brought in, they didn’t always have the specialist skills needed to manage complex emergencies which could put people at risk.

“Overcrowding created real physical risks to people. During our inspection, trolleys were blocking the entrance to the children’s resuscitation room and fire escape routes, meaning that in an emergency, the team’s response could have been delayed.

“We were pleased that leaders acted quickly to address this when we raised it to them to help prevent people coming to harm.

“People with mental health needs were also particularly affected.

Some waited an average of seven hours for a bed in a loud and busy environment which they found difficult to cope with. This is longer than anyone should have to wait in those circumstances.

“We’ve shared our findings with the trust, so they know where improvements must be made and where there is good care to build on.

“Leaders have assured us they’re taking our concerns seriously and taking steps to improve the care and support people receive.

We’ll continue to monitor this service to ensure people are kept safe.”

Inspectors found that the department’s major incident

plan had not been reviewed since 2017 and no emergency exercises had taken place in four years, meaning staff had not practised their response to a large-scale incident which could put people at risk. The trust stated it would utilise the Trust Incident Response Framework instead.

The department didn’t always make the necessary improvements after concerns had been identified.

For example, when fluid balance monitoring was paused for several months, staff had no way of knowing whether people were being properly hydrated which could result in their health deteriorating.

On a positive note, inspectors found that staff treated people as individuals and with compassion, including tailoring care to meet the needs of autistic people and those with dementia or a learning disability.

The department also performed better than both regional and national averages for unplanned reattendance, suggesting people were discharged at the right time with the right treatment.

RUH responds to CQC’s findings In response to the CQC’s findings, a spokesperson for the Royal United Hospitals Bath said this week: “We cooperated fully with the CQC both during and since the inspection to demonstrate that we are making progress against our improvement plan.

“We now have more senior decision-makers in the emergency department overnight and 24/7 security presence.

“The emergency department team has enhanced oversight of emergency access points to ensure they remain unobstructed.

We are working with the Avon and Wiltshire Partnership so that

patients who are attending ED with mental health presentations are cared for in the right place, at the right time.

“We have also been working closely with the national Getting it Right First Time team to look at our working practices, which has resulted in a refresh of our Internal Professional Standards.

“The report also highlights positive aspects of our service including our performance against unplanned reattendances and the appropriate escalation of suspected sepsis, high NEWS2 scores and safeguarding concerns.

“Our staff are also recognised for being caring and compassionate, particularly in how they look after those patients with autism and learning disabilities.

“At the time of the visit and since then, we have been experiencing the highest ever demand levels in our emergency department.

In addition, the implementation of the ambulance service’s new Rapid Release Protocol coincided with a year-on-year ambulance demand increase of 25% and emergency department footfall of 13%.

“We have been working hard to respond to these new working practices alongside South West Ambulance Service Foundation Trust to make sure that it does not result in overcrowding in the department, and we are committed to putting the right measures in place to avoid corridor care in the hospital during the course of next winter.

“We know from the end-of-year data that we will be one of the most improved trusts in the country against the four-hour emergency department target; and we are pleased to have secured access to capital funding to build a new urgent treatment centre this year and to completely rebuild the emergency department over the course of the following three years.

“We want to acknowledge our staff’s exceptional efforts and their commitment to making the additional improvements needed for the benefit of our patients and community; and to express our gratitude to our partners in South West Ambulance Service Trust, Avon and Wiltshire Partnership and the Integrated Care Board for their cooperation and support.”

Why is the council ignoring Chelsea Road traders’ concerns?

INDEPENDENT traders at Chelsea Road in Bath are increasingly frustrated that their concerns about councilimplemented changes are not being “heard or respected”.

The Chelsea Road Traders’ Association contacted the Echo with their concerns during roadworks earlier this month and we raised them with the council.

We have contacted the press office multiple times for a response since Tuesday 5th May but have yet to receive one.

Many local businesses say trade has already been hit since the imposition of the residents’ parking zone (RPZ) for Chelsea Road, Kennington Road, Warwick Road, Foxcombe Road and Park Road, and the recent roadworks – about which not all traders received notification letters – only compounded the situation.

The group represents a wide

range of businesses including cafés, hairdressers, barbers and other independents, and says it is finding communication with the council “difficult”.

Members say recent traffic and infrastructure changes along Chelsea Road were carried out without “meaningful consultation” with the traders most directly affected.

As a collective, the group experienced an average reduction in trade of approximately 40%, with some businesses reporting daily losses of up to 60%.

During the roadworks they complained about “misleading” notices such as “Chelsea Road closed” which created the impression that the street was entirely inaccessible, deterring customers and reducing footfall.

They say the installation of “multiple” pedestrian crossings had a direct negative impact on customer access and some businesses were rendered inaccessible for a time. There has also been frustration about

such extensive works for new crossings on a road where there is no accident record and at a time when existing infrastructure issues, such as potholes, remain unaddressed.

The traders say the introduction of resident-focused parking permits and short-term restrictions have driven customers away, with many choosing locations that offer easier access. They say Chelsea Road is not an isolated case however with similar patterns in the Widcombe, Bear Flat, and Moorland Road areas of Bath.

The Chelsea Road traders continue to press for an urgent meeting with council representatives and for financial compensation for businesses that have suffered a demonstrable loss of earnings. They are also calling for a commitment to meaningful consultation before any further measures are implemented as they fear that the council is proposing a permanent one-way system.

Old Post Office conversion into Fashion Museum approved John Wimperis

PLANS to bring the Fashion Museum back to Bath with a new “absolutely amazing” home in the city centre have been approved.

Bath & North East Somerset Council’s planning committee voted on Wednesday 13th May to grant planning permission to turn the Grade II listed Old Post Office on the corner of New Bond Street and Broad Street into an iconic new home for the museum.

Construction is expected to start next year, with the museum expected to open in autumn 2030.

Councillor Paul Roper, cabinet member for economic and cultural sustainable development, and the ward councillor, said: “Securing planning permission for Fashion Museum Bath is a landmark moment for our city.

“This project is about much more than a new museum: it is a transformative investment in Bath’s cultural future, bringing new life to historic buildings, creating inspiring spaces for learning and creativity, and ensuring that this world-class collection can be enjoyed by generations to come.”

The museum is expected to

attract a quarter of a million visitors per year and generate £100 million a year in benefits to the area through increased spending, employment, and health and wellbeing.

Like the Roman Baths, which is also owned and run by the council, it will be free for Bath and North East Somerset residents with a Discovery Card.

The plan will see galleries created upstairs, with a flexible exhibition space in the 2005 extension to the rear.

Another extension will be demolished to recreate the building’s old courtyard, while a “large and welcoming foyer” will include a museum shop with a storefront on New Bond Street.

The planning application was submitted by the council’s own heritage services department.

This does not guarantee planning approval, as councillors on the planning committee have been known to turn down the council’s own applications in the past.

But the plans were widely supported by the experts consulted and only received one single objection from a member of the public.

Two former leaders of the council, who now sit on the planning committee, praised the plan. Tim Warren (Midsomer Norton Redfield, Conservative), who led the council from 2015-

2019, said: “I think it’s going to be beautiful when it’s finished.”

His successor as leader, Liberal Democrat Paul Crossley (Southdown), added: “This is an absolutely amazing proposal.”

Councillor Crossley said that the fact such a major development in the centre of Bath had virtually no objections was a credit to the work which had been done on the plan.

Rob Campbell, the council’s head of heritage and culture, told the committee: “This is the kind of project that places wait decades for: culturally ambitious, economically credible, socially viable, and environmentally responsible.

Office and transforms it into a major new cultural destination in the heart of Bath – the first major new museum in the city for nearly 40 years.”

The world-famous Fashion Museum collection includes more than 1,000 items of clothing spanning four centuries of fashion history.

Since the National Trust took back the museum’s former home at the Assembly Rooms in 2023, the internationally significant collection has been stored in a glove factory in Wiltshire.

Councillor Crossley said: “The fact that we have now arrived here shows that, in the end, the National Trust have done us a long-term favour.”

Once open, the Fashion Museum

is expected to create 38 fulltime jobs, or equivalent. In the meantime, the project will create 165 construction jobs.

Bath & North East Somerset Council also plans to pedestrianise the end of Broad Street, turning it into a new public square in front of St Michael’s Church. This would include outdoor seating from the planned cafe in the Fashion Museum foyer.

Tom Emerson OBE, of 6a architects, who designed the museum, said: “We are delighted to achieve planning permission for the Fashion Museum Bath and are grateful to the many hundreds of people who have contributed to the museum so far.

“The transformation of the former Post Office will continue Bath’s legacy of outstanding architecture with a museum designed for today and for future generations.”

The Old Post Office building is one of the few 20th century buildings in Bath’s historic city centre to be grade II listed. It should not be confused with the city’s other “Old Post Office,” near the other end of Broad Street, which has just been turned into the city’s new Wetherspoons.

Direct rail links between Bristol, Bath & Oxford after 23 years DIRECT daily rail services linking Bristol Temple Meads and Bath Spa with Oxford returned on Monday, 18th May, for the first time in more than 20 years.

The new services, which will run every two hours from Monday to Saturday, call at Temple Meads, Bath Spa, Chippenham, Swindon and Oxford.

The first service left Oxford at 7am on Monday, arriving into Swindon at 7.30am and Bristol Temple Meads at 8.20am. From Bristol, the first train left at 7.14am, arriving into Swindon at 7.59am and Oxford at 8.32am.

Quickest direct journey times from Oxford will be one hour eight minutes, and from Bristol one hour 11 minutes.

Great Western Railway’s managing director Mark Hopwood CBE said: “We know this is something customers and partners have been campaigning for over recent years, and we’re very grateful to those who have supported our case to make this happen.”

Network Rail Western’s route director, Marcus Jones BEM, said: “We’ve worked closely with Great Western Railway to make sure the infrastructure is ready to support these services safely and reliably, and this is an important

To mark the launch, GWR is offering a range of special deals on fares for the first month, with Advance Purchase tickets on the new services available from around half the usual price.

GWR had launched a trial of Saturday services between Bristol and Oxford in 2024, in response to a growth in demand for leisure travel by train.

The last direct services between the two iconic destinations had previously run in 2003.

BATH & North East Somerset Council is planning to remove graffiti that has been spray painted on a prominent site in the city centre.

The council’s conservation officer confirmed that listed building consent is required for the graffiti removal works at 5 Burton Street, above Bird & Blend Tea Company.

With spray paint known for deep pigment penetration into porous stone surfaces and being resistant to simple water-based cleaning, the size of the red, white and black graffiti on the front of the main chimney stack suggests

“considerable” penetration, according to a report.

Historic England says graffiti on protected heritage assets must be treated as a “heritage crime” and stresses the importance of using contractors experienced in graffiti removal from historic buildings The council says it will be using its trusted sub-contractor NKS to carry out the work at the Grade II listed property. There are existing fixing holes which have previously been used to attach scaffolding to the building. They will be used to ensure no further damage to the masonry.

The planning reference is 26/01602/REG13 and anyone wishing to comment on the proposals has until 18th June.

53-year-old given suspended Man drove despite ban sentence for ABH and knife offence imposed 16 years ago A TRANS woman from Bath who suffers daily abuse has been given a suspended jail sentence for an assault she committed after being “triggered”.

Krissy Baker, from Walcot, appeared before Bath magistrates for sentencing on Wednesday 13th May. At a hearing in March, the 53-year-old had admitted assaulting a man on 30th August last year, causing him actual bodily harm (ABH).

She had also admitted being in possession of a kitchen knife with a 12.8-centimetre blade in Pierrepont Street.

Magistrates had adjourned the case for an all-options presentence report to be prepared by the Probation Service.

Prosecutor Maree Doyle told the court that it had been an unprovoked attack.

One of the blows which Baker inflicted on the man resulted in a two-centimetre laceration to his head, for which he needed hospital treatment. He also suffered mild concussion.

Ms Doyle read a statement from the victim highlighting the significant impact the assault has had on his life, and he has moved away from Bath as a result. The

clothes he’d been wearing that day, including a football shirt, had been ruined by blood, and Ms Doyle asked the court to consider compensation for the victim.

Baker’s solicitor Mark O’Donnell said the defendant, who has no previous convictions, had come out as transgender seven years ago and suffers physical and verbal abuse on a daily basis; on a bad day, it can be up to 10 times.

On that day last August, “something triggered her”, said Mr O’Donnell.

He described it as “the straw that broke the camel’s back” and said Baker had swung at the man with a keyring on a lanyard a number of times.

When arrested, Baker told the police she had a knife in her bag but there was no suggestion she was going to use it in any way, said Mr O’Donnell.

A friend of Baker’s read a character reference to the magistrates, saying she had helped him at the Julian House shelter in Bath. He spoke of her kindness and support and described her as being “extremely brave and positive”.

He said he had witnessed attacks on her and had been injured

himself when stepping in to protect her.

The magistrates accepted there was “lots of mitigation”, including Baker’s lack of previous convictions, good character, and early guilty plea, and it was “likely there was some degree of provocation” but there had been “serious consequences” and only a custodial sentence could be justified.

They gave Baker a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, recognising that the defendant would be “vulnerable” in custody and saying they did not want to disrupt her friendship network.

Baker received a two-month sentence for the knife possession, which will run concurrently.

She will also have to undergo up to 10 rehabilitation activity requirement (RAR) days aimed at supporting her to manage the abuse she gets.

She was ordered to pay £840 compensation to the victim. It will be deducted from her benefits.

The bench made no order for costs or court surcharge due to Baker’s lack of means, saying they were prioritising compensation.

They also ordered the deprivation of the knife.

Mustafa had his licence revoked on medical grounds in 2009

A MAN who was caught driving in Saltford although he lost his licence 16 years ago because of his eyesight has appeared in court in Bath.

Prosecutor Maree Doyle told magistrates there had been a police check on Bath Road on 26th October last year and investigations had revealed Musa Mustafa’s licence had been revoked on medical grounds on 16th February 2009.

She said there was a likelihood that he had been using the vehicle before last October.

Mustafa, of Beam Street in Bristol, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving despite his licence having been revoked due to disability, and a further charge of driving with no valid insurance in place.

Duty solicitor Mark O’Donnell said Mustafa had his licence taken

away due to visual impairment and had made a “foolish error” by driving.

He said there was no suggestion that Mustafa’s driving had put other road users in danger.

The 43-year-old had an eye test in March which had been successful and he now has to convince the Secretary of State that he is fit to drive, said Mr O’Donnell.

The court heard that Mustafa already had six penalty points on his licence; with the eight notional points added by magistrates last Wednesday, 13th May, he was disqualified under the totting up system and banned from driving for six months. For the licence offence his driving record was endorsed but with no points.

Mustafa was fined £184 and ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs and a surcharge of £74.

Conditional discharge for assaulting police

Man stole food after coming out of hospital with no after care

A MAN with complex mental health issues has been given a conditional discharge by Bath magistrates after admitting assaulting two police officers.

James Merrifield, 23, of no fixed address, appeared in court on Monday 18th May accompanied by a support worker and NHS employee.

Prosecutor Fleur Bullivant told the court that on 27th April police were called to Southgate Street where paramedics were dealing with Merrifield who was angry and heavily intoxicated. He threw a bottle which landed at the foot of one of the police officers.

Merrifield was taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath due to concerns for his welfare and while being assessed by a doctor, headbutted another police officer in the chest. As he was leaving the hospital Merrifield threw himself in front of a moving car.

The court heard that Merrifield has two previous convictions for three offences and had previously received a community order for possessing a knife in public.

A MAN stole food after being released from hospital with no after care, Bath magistrates heard this week.

Steven Reed, 46, appeared in court on Monday 18th May to admit stealing cheese and meat worth £59.18 from Tesco Express at Georges Place in Bath on 16th February.

Prosecutor Fleur Bullivant said Reed, of the Paragon, Walcot, had 15 previous convictions for 34 offences, most of them shop thefts. Defending Reed, solicitor Anthony Bignall asked the bench

that Merrifield had been upset as he had been assaulted earlier on that day in April. She said he had not aimed the bottle at the officer and had pleaded guilty on the basis of it being a “reckless assault”.

Initially magistrates asked the Probation Service to prepare a pre-sentence report, including an assessment for a mental health treatment requirement (MHTR).

However, the probation officer stressed that although Merrifield had previously received a community order, his needs were now too complex for them.

Magistrates reconsidered and gave Merrifield a 12-month conditional discharge, noting that the defendant has complex mental health needs that may have caused the assault and they did not feel, based on his history and how he presented in court, that a fine or community order would benefit anyone.

They ordered Merrifield, who is on benefits, to pay £100 compensation to each officer. No order was made for prosecution costs or court surcharge.

The court heard from the Probation Service that Reed is currently under a community order which runs until August and is doing well on it.

He had shoplifted from Tesco Express after coming out of hospital with no after care in place. He could not get a food voucher and the food he had stolen was for his own consumption, not to sell on.

Sentencing Reed, magistrates

said they were concerned about the amount of shoplifting Reed had done in the past but noted he is doing well on his community order and now has food vouchers.

They decided not to revoke the order and re-sentence Reed, instead fining him £80 and ordering him to pay compensation to Tesco of £59.18 as well as prosecution costs of £85 and a court surcharge of £32.

The amount will be added to money that Reed already owes the court and will be deducted from his benefits.

Homeless 31-year-old stole ‘out of desperation’ after losing benefits A 31-YEAR-OLD homeless man who stole food has been fined

by Bath magistrates.

Scott Humphries appeared in court on Wednesday 13th May to admit stealing items worth £19.20 from the One Stop shop in Rosewell Court in the city on 18th March.

He apologised to the court.

Humphries’ solicitor told the magistrates that at the time, the

defendant had lost his benefits.

He’d had no means of feeding himself and had stolen “out of desperation”.

Humphries is currently under an 18-month community order for dissimilar offences. That order included a nine-month alcohol treatment requirement and five rehabilitation activity requirement (RAR) days, and the court heard he is complying with

it.

The magistrates decided to leave the order as it is and fined Humphries £40 for the shoplifting offence. They ordered him to pay £19.20 compensation to One Stop but made no order for prosecution costs or a court surcharge.

Humphries is already paying off fines with an outstanding total of more than £3,000.

Drink-driver banned after wiping out lights A PENSIONER from Bath has been banned from driving after he knocked down a set of traffic lights and crashed into other vehicles whilst drunk.

At approximately 5.20pm on 31st March, officers from Wiltshire Police were called to a collision on Frome Road in Trowbridge where a vehicle had mounted the pavement and collided with multiple vehicles, as well as flattened traffic lights.

Garrick Jones, of Holburne Park, Bathwick, was identified as the driver and failed a roadside breath test. He was arrested and taken to custody where he provided a further reading which showed he was over the drinkdrive limit.

The 73-year-old appeared in court the following day and pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

He was remanded in custody and was back in court on Monday 11th May when he was handed a 27-month ban and ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work under a community order.

After the sentencing, PC Craig Beales, from Wiltshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “This incident shows just how dangerous and reckless drinkdriving is. It was only through sheer luck that no one was seriously injured when Jones’

vehicle mounted the pavement and struck multiple cars and traffic lights.

“Jones was found to be well over the limit following the collision and in no fit state to be behind the wheel of a car. We will continue to take robust action against anyone who chooses to get behind the wheel while intoxicated, and we urge the public to report concerns if they suspect someone is driving under the influence.”

As part of his sentence, Garrick must also attend 20 rehabilitation days, pay a £114 surcharge and prosecution costs of £85.

A 24-YEAR-OLD man has appeared in custody at Bath Magistrates’ Court charged with causing criminal damage at his ex-partner’s home in Twerton.

On Wednesday 13th May Connor Butcher, of no fixed address, admitted that on 4th February, without lawful excuse, he had destroyed a glass pane in her door to a value unknown.

Duty solicitor Sam Stevens told the court that Butcher had gone to the complainant’s home that day to pick up a letter.

He said the woman has mental health issues and Butcher was dragged by his hair and she was trying to get the dog to attack him.

He had punched the glass, which was already cracked, injuring his hand, and had to go to hospital.

Magistrates remanded Butcher on conditional bail until his sentencing which will be at the magistrates' court on 13th July, tying up with another case involving the theft of pedal cycles, which he has already admitted.

Due to concern for the complainant, the prosecutor asked that Butcher be excluded from the whole street in Twerton where she lives, but magistrates imposed a condition that he does not go to the specific address, adding that he must not contact her directly or indirectly.

THERE has been much discussion about restoring the pond in Royal Victoria Park, a discussion which is still ongoing.

But the sad fact is that, almost as soon as the pond was created, even in a much simpler form, there were problems with water supply. Many photographs of the pond from the early 1900s in the Akeman Press Archive show the water level as low.

By the 1920s it was nearly at crisis point and in 1938 the pond ran completely dry, as it almost did again in the 1950s. So whether this latest effort will be any more successful than previous attempts remains to be seen.

However, while the pond’s future has been the focus of much debate, the loss of another facility has attracted much less attention.

In the late 1990s, there was a plan to restore the park to its 19th century plan. Although the pavilion in the Botanical Gardens – known as Wembley because it was the Bath exhibit at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924 – was not Victorian it was decided to use it as an information centre for the park. To make it more inviting, glazed doors were installed so that leaflets as well as pictures of its history could be displayed there. It was never intended to be closed to the general public. Visitors would still be able to take cover there in wet weather, as they always had, but it would give added enjoyment to all who wanted to know more about the park.

But today, unless you are hiring it for an event, you cannot go in, so much of the time, it stands empty and doing nothing.

Is it not high time it was reopened as an information centre? It could still be used for weddings, and it would be a tribute to Glenn Humphreys, former Parks Heritage manager, who passed away in 2024, whose love and enthusiasm for the historic parks in his care was unmatched.

However, another feature that remains as popular as it always was is Victorian Garden below Royal Crescent. It provides a welcome splash of colour in Royal Avenue, as we see in this AR Quinton post card from the 1920s.

T some point in our lives, most of us will either experience mental ill health ourselves or support someone close to us who does.

The mental health charity Mind estimates that one in four people will experience a mental health problem in any given year, making it clear how important it is that the right help is available when people reach crisis point.

The police are not always the right agency to respond to every incident, most of the time health professionals are far better placed to help. Recognising that - and building services around it - is essential to protecting people at their most vulnerable.

There are times when an emergency service response is necessary. That is why I am a

co-commissioner, alongside the NHS and the Fire Service, of the Integrated Access Partnership (IAP).

This model brings together mental health services, ambulance services and out-ofhours primary care to ensure that when emergency services are contacted, people receive the most appropriate and timely response to their mental health needs.

The IAP is delivered through a multidisciplinary team within Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership, working alongside South Western Ambulance Service and BrisDoc. What this looks like in practice: • The Mental Health Specialist Desk, where mental health nurses review and triage 999

calls involving mental health needs, supporting decisions about the most appropriate response.

• Mental Health Response Vehicles, providing blue light responses directly to people in mental health crisis, led by specialist clinicians.

• The Emergency Services Professionals Line, giving police, fire and ambulance staff immediate access to expert clinical advice while responding to incidents.

A particularly important development has been the deployment of the Mental Health Response Vehicles. More people who trigger emergency call outs are now being supported and treated at the scene rather than taken to hospital. This

reduces distress for individuals and relieves pressure elsewhere in the system.

The Mental Health Specialist Desk has also been crucial in reducing unnecessary police attendance at mental health-related incidents.

This has been strengthened by a dedicated police link officer role, based within the South Western Ambulance call centre.

Officers in this role work alongside clinicians on a 24/7 rota, supporting the triage of calls. Where the link officer is in place, police deployments to mental health incidents have reduced by 20 to 30%.

The IAP has calculated that for every £1 invested in this role,

£3 is saved – a clear example of how doing the right thing for people also delivers better value for public money.

This approach means that, where appropriate, police officers and ambulances can be stood down and replaced by specialist support better suited to the situation. We avoid unnecessary trips to emergency departments, deploy clinicians directly to people in crisis, and free up emergency services to respond where there is an immediate risk of harm. Police will always attend when there is a real and immediate threat to life.

But protecting people also means getting them the right support, at the right time.

Having said that, such are the temptations on the Hudson starter array that we began our bargain trip with a couple of classics: huge, juicy tempura tiger prawns with a spicy Nobu sauce inspired by chef Nobu

Matsuhisa’s iconic restaurant of the same name, and a delectable chicken liver parfait — one of the neatest examples of the genre I’ve ever encountered — served with a ginger apple relish and toasted sourdough.

But as satisfyingly tasty as both starters were (and my goodness, they really were), you don’t really need to supplement the Special event at all; a wallet-friendly early dining deal here doesn’t result in a business overhead-friendly reduction in size, quality or standard.

The sirloin steak? Robust, juicy, tender and richly flavoursome.

The fries? A generous tumble of crisp/fluffy, perfectly seasoned beauties. The béarnaise sauce?

Shiny, buttery and rich in aromatic tarragon. And the wine…? We opted for the house red: deeply robust, subtly complex and smooooth enough to make me want to move in.

Co-chairs appointed to lead £20 million project PLANS for £20 million of Government investment in Twerton and Whiteway have moved forward with the appointment of two new co-chairs to help lead the programme.

Joy Luxford and Ruby Sant will head up the Pride in Place Neighbourhood Board, which is being set up to work with local residents and organisations on a long-term plan for the area.

Twerton and Whiteway has been included in the Government’s national Pride in Place programme, securing funding over the next 10 years for improvements chosen by the community itself.

Bath & North East Somerset Council said the two co-chairs were appointed following an open recruitment process and will be responsible for helping keep local voices at the centre of the work.

Joy Luxford is an award-winning director with a background in helping charities grow their impact.

She serves on the boards of

Alliance Homes and the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust, was previously a director of Bath City Football Club, and until recently lived in Whiteway.

She founded Creative Twerton and works as a large-scale immersive artist specialising in sculptural metalwork.

She brings experience in funding, business development and

community space, as well as lived experience.

Joy Luxford said: “I am honoured to be appointed co-chair of the Pride in Place programme alongside Ruby.

“It offers a unique, high-impact opportunity for us to work with the local community to shape the long-term future of Twerton and Whiteway with substantial and sustained funding.

“We’re keen to use this role to empower community to cocreate a vision and plan that will deliver immediate and long-term

impact.”

Ruby Sant added: “I am delighted to be able to support the community to develop and deliver change making projects over the next two years and beyond.

“Joy and I strongly believe in the skills, passion and knowledge that is held by local people.

“We will be looking to build on this and leverage it to create generational, ambitious change.”

Bath MP Wera Hobhouse said the appointments marked a major step forward for the communityled scheme, while Councillor Paul Roper, cabinet member for economic and cultural sustainable development said both women brought the skills and experience needed to help shape the Pride in Place Plan.

The board’s members will be appointed by the co-chairs with support from the council.

A final plan setting out the vision for the area and how the money will be spent is due to be submitted to the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government in November 2026.

Views being sought on new clean air strategy

Metal recycling scheme awards £17k to charities

A NEW public consultation has been launched as Bath & North East Somerset Council looks to set fresh local targets on air pollution and shape a wider Clean Air Strategy for the district.

The six-week exercise is asking residents, businesses and visitors for their views on how air quality can be improved and harmful pollution reduced.

The local authority says the strategy is intended to improve health across the whole district, with proposed actions aimed at cutting pollution levels beyond the minimum national requirements already being met locally.

Air pollution remains one of the most serious environmental risks to public health. While it affects everyone, it can be especially harmful for children, older people and those living with heart or lung conditions.

The council also points to growing evidence showing that poorer communities are more likely to be exposed to polluted air.

By consulting now, the council says it wants to hear from a wide range of people, including those most affected by air pollution, such as families with young children, older residents and people with existing health issues.

Councillor Sarah Warren, deputy leader and cabinet member for sustainable Bath and North East Somerset, said: “Clean air is

TWO charities have each received £8,500 after Bath & North East Somerset Council distributed money raised through a national metal recycling scheme.

Bath Cats and Dogs Home and BRACE Dementia Research are the latest organisations to benefit from the council’s membership of the not-for-profit Recycling of Metals Scheme run by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management.

The scheme collects common metal items from cremators, such as medical pins, metal plates and artificial joints, with the consent of relatives. The money raised through recycling is then shared among ICCM members for donation to charities.

Bath Cats and Dogs Home, which rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes more than 700 pets each year, said the funding would help it continue caring for animals in need, including those who have lost their owner.

Katie Love, head of fundraising and retail at Bath Cats and Dogs Home, said: “We are deeply grateful for this thoughtful and compassionate donation.

“This support will help us continue to care for pets in need, including cats and dogs who have sadly lost their owner, giving them the chance of a loving new home.

"It will also help us to continue our Future Paws Promise offering owners the peace of mind that their much-loved companions

For decades it was assumed that dementia is an inevitable part of ageing, but it is not. Now, we are at a tipping point of real progress and that has only been possible because of generous donations like this one.”

Councillor Manda Rigby, cabinet member for communications and community, said families who agreed to be part of the scheme had helped make a real difference to their communities.

Bath Abbey names ‘honoured’ Revd Changes to junction as Dr Ian Mills as its next rector part of travel scheme THE Revd Dr Ian Mills has been named as the next Rector of Bath Abbey and is expected to begin the role in the autumn.

He will move to the Abbey from his current post as Rector of the Benefice of Chew Valley West, where he also serves as Area Dean of Chew Magna in the Diocese of Bath and Wells.

Bishop Michael welcomed the appointment, saying: “I am delighted that Ian Mills is be the next Rector of Bath Abbey.

“Ian will bring extensive experience and the heart of a true pastor to his ministry in Bath. I am delighted that Ian will continue as a colleague in our Diocese of Bath and Wells.”

Ian said he was looking forward to joining the Abbey and serving its congregation, wider community and visitors.

He said: “I am thrilled and honoured to have been invited to come and serve God as Rector of Bath Abbey.

“The Abbey is a remarkable place of prayer, worship and welcome and I look forward with gratitude to working with colleagues to serve its congregation, community and visitors in the years ahead.

Before entering ordained ministry, Ian worked as an organist, accompanist and music teacher. He was organist and choirmaster at Derry Cathedral for nine years and also worked freelance with several arts organisations.

He later studied theology at Trinity College, Dublin, after reading music at Queen’s University, Belfast, and trained for ordination at the Church of Ireland Theological Institute.

He was ordained priest in 2017

and served his curacy in Connor Diocese in County Antrim before moving to Chew Valley West in 2021.

Music has remained part of his ministry, and he has founded two children’s choirs and an adult community choir in his current benefice.

He will be joined in Bath by his wife, Kelly-Ann, who is a foetal medicine consultant at St Michael’s Hospital in Bristol, and their baby daughter Iris.

BATH & North East Somerset Council is planning changes to a junction in Peasedown St John as part of the Somer Valley Links Active Travel Scheme.

The full scheme includes 25 proposed interventions, mainly on the A367 and A37, the main roads linking the Somer Valley with Bath and Bristol.

The aim is to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians, reduce congestion, and improve the efficiency of public transport.

The council is currently seeking a certificate of lawfulness for its plans for changes to the A367 (Roman Way) / Bath Road junction in Peasedown St John, primarily to improve the rightturn movement from Bath Road onto the westbound A367 for buses. Operator First Group has flagged up operational difficulties due to the geometry and high

approach speeds.

The plans include: • A pedestrian refuge island as an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing point at the Bath Road junction with the A367, replacing a cobbled area.

• Installing dropped kerbs and tactile paving at the new pedestrian crossing point.

• Lane narrowing with updated road markings to encourage lower vehicle speeds.

• Red coloured surfacing to both new and existing hatched areas.

The application is published on the council’s planning portal for information only, not for comment.

A potential reduction in the speed limit from 50mph to 40mph will be progressed separately via a Traffic Regulation Order, says the council.

Walk founder to join her final RUHX fundraiser RUHX is preparing to stage the 20th annual Walk of Life later this month, with the founder of the event set to take part for the final time after helping raise more than £1 million for the charity.

The sponsored walk, organised by the official charity of the Royal United Hospitals Bath, will take place on Saturday 23rd May. Nic Noble, from Warminster, launched the event with her sister Vanessa, known as Ness, in 2006 with the aim of raising money for the Dyson Cancer Centre.

After Ness died in 2007 when her cancer progressed, Nic vowed to continue the fundraising effort.

Looking back over the past two decades, Nic said one of the most meaningful parts of the event had been meeting the many people taking part for their own reasons while sharing the same goal of giving something back to the hospital.

She said: “Over the past 20 years I have been privileged to meet and walk with so many lovely people sharing their journey, either

walking for themselves and for someone they loved.

“All so different but one common goal to make a difference for the hospital that’s touched them.”

Reflecting on how the event began, she added: “From our very first walk around the catchment of the RUH by my sister Nessa’s side, to walking with her each

Warning over hidden high blood pressure HEALTH leaders are urging more people in the South West to get their blood pressure checked amid warnings that thousands could be living with dangerously high readings without knowing it.

New NHS figures show that an extra 114,910 adults aged 40 and over in the region were checked and treated for high blood pressure between September 2023 and December 2025.

That has taken the overall regional total to 68.7%, but the NHS says many more people may still be going undiagnosed because high blood pressure often has no obvious symptoms.

The renewed call came ahead of World Hypertension Day on 17th May, with NHS leaders encouraging people to come forward for a simple test that could help prevent heart attacks and strokes.

Dr Trevor Smith, regional medical director for NHS England in the South West, said: “While we’re continuing to see people come forward to have their blood pressure checked and treated as they become more aware of this ‘silent killer’, we really want to find those thousands of people in our region potentially still walking around, unidentified and untreated.”

Although some people may experience headaches, dizziness, breathing difficulties, chest pain or nosebleeds, the NHS says there are often no warning signs at all.

“From his pocket he removed an old film canister and in it was some of his mum’s ashes, she was walking with him,” she said.

Nic is now preparing for her final Walk of Life, and in the lead-up is taking on a series of extra walking challenges, including Pen y Fan in Wales.

She said: “Thank you to the charity for being my clarity in dark time but also in hope. You are all extremely special to me.”

Since the event was first held, walkers have raised more than £875,000 for the hospital, helping fund projects including the Dyson Cancer Centre.

This year’s route follows the Kennet & Avon Canal from Bishops Cannings, near Devizes, to Bath, with participants able to choose between the full 26.2mile marathon route or shorter 16-mile and 10-mile options.

Among those backing the appeal is Sam Collier, head of clinical quality for NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, who suffered a stroke linked to high blood pressure when she was 42.

She said: “I’d had reminders to go for my annual health check, but with two teenage children, a fulltime job and a busy life I felt like I didn’t have time to even make an appointment. I didn’t prioritise my health and I almost died as a result.”

Now fully recovered 12 years later, she said: “Please don’t wait until it’s too late. I was lucky I didn’t die from high blood pressure.

“Taking a few minutes to check your blood pressure, especially if you’re over 40 years old, could save your life – and stop a lot of heartache and worry for your family and friends.”

SULIS Hospital in Peasedown St John has expanded its diagnostic equipment with the arrival of a new ultrasound scanner, designed to improve imaging and support clinicians during examinations.

The Samsung R20 system forms part of its wider investment in modern diagnostic technology and ongoing efforts to deliver high-quality care.

The new machine is intended to strengthen ultrasound services across a number of specialties by offering enhanced imaging and tools to support fast and reliable examinations.

Sulis said the system uses AIassisted features during live scanning, helping clinicians produce clearer images, automate measurements and work more efficiently.

The technology is also designed to support diagnosis in more complex cases. Alongside the clinical benefits, the hospital said the equipment has been chosen with staff wellbeing in mind.

The system includes ergonomic improvements aimed at making scanning more comfortable for sonographers and reducing physical strain during examinations.

Extra SEND places created thanks to purpose-built base A NEW specialist facility for children with special educational needs and disabilities is due to be built at a Bath primary school as part of wider efforts to expand local provision.

Bath & North East Somerset Council said work started on 11th May, on a new SEND resource base at Mulberry Park Educate Together Primary Academy in Combe Down.

The purpose-built facility will provide places for up to 10 pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans, with support aimed at children whose main need is social, emotional and mental health.

The council says the new provision will allow children to remain in mainstream education close to home while also receiving more specialist support.

The single-storey building will include a classroom, breakout areas, small group spaces, welfare facilities and a secure outdoor area designed specifically for SEND pupils.

Councillor Paul May, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “This is an important milestone for a project that will make a real difference to children and families across Bath & North East Somerset.

“This will support more children with additional needs to learn in their local community, close to family and friends and alongside their peers, in a familiar environment while receiving tailored support.

“Ensuring children can attend a local school rather than travelling outside the Bath & North East Somerset area is not only better for the children and their families, but it also avoids expensive outof- area placements and transport costs for the council.”

The scheme forms part of the council’s broader programme to increase specialist school places locally and improve outcomes for children and young people with SEND. It also links to wider climate and sustainability goals by reducing the need for travel to out-of-area

Construction is being carried out by contractor 21CBS and is expected to be completed by December 2026. The council

said work would be managed to reduce disruption for the school and nearby residents.

The authority announced in March that it had also secured

support for a 120-place special free school at the Culverhay site in Bath following a successful application to the Department for Education.

Students raise £1,000 for charity launched in memory of Mikey

Bath primary school celebrates top award

PUPILS at a Keynsham school have raised £1,000 for the charity set up in memory of the teenager who died after being stabbed at a party in Bath nearly three years ago.

Year 10 students at Lift Broadlands took part in the national social action programme First Give by researching community needs, selecting local charities, and delivering creative presentations to highlight important causes affecting their area.

The winning team supported Mikey’s World, founded in memory of Mikey Roynon, who was 16 when he died in June 2023.

The charity works to educate young people about the impact of knife crime and promote positive life choices.

The group delivered a standout presentation led by Jessy Thomson, Tamara Adams, Evie Mae-Williams and Ruby Mounty.

Special recognition was also given to Conrad Moon for bravely sharing a personal experience during the project, and to Lyla Marie-Wilson for stepping up as a leader within her group.

Following the final presentations, First Give awarded Mikey’s World £1,000. The charity then presented the school with an emergency bleed kit, which has now been installed outside the school for use by the wider community.

Students are also helping decide where further bleed kits could be installed in the local community using the remaining prize money.

ST John’s Catholic Primary School in Oldfield Lane in Bath has been awarded the CAFOD LiveSimply Award, recognising its commitment to living simply, sustainably, and in solidarity with others.

The award, administered by the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD), celebrates schools that demonstrate a clear commitment to global citizenship and caring for both people and the planet through faith-inspired action.

Across the school, which is part of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, children have embraced everyday actions that reflect a commitment to sustainability, including reducing waste, saving energy, and supporting those in need.

Their growing understanding of how small actions can make a meaningful difference has been a real strength of the school’s work.

A key role in this success has been played by the school’s pupil-led eco committee, with initiatives to improve recycling systems and encourage responsible environmental habits across the school community.

The school’s chaplaincy team has also made a significant contribution, supporting charitable initiatives and encouraging pupils to think of others locally and globally.

Other participating charities, St Peter’s Hospice and Developing Health & Independence (DHI), each received £100 donations from the incoming chair of BANES, Councillor Shaun Stephenson-McGall, in recognition of the students’ efforts and impact.

All three charities praised the students for their enthusiasm, confidence and commitment throughout the project, with Mikey’s World also expressing interest in future collaboration and inviting the winning team to present at a local workshop.

First Give helps students learn about social issues, work with local charities, and deliver social action projects that make a positive difference in their communities. The school is looking forward to taking part in the programme again next year, building on this year’s success.

Laura Stone, principal at Lift Broadlands, said: “We are incredibly proud of our Year

10 students for the way they embraced the First Give project.

“Their teamwork, creativity and commitment to making a difference in their community has been fantastic to see, and the impact they have achieved is something they should be very proud of.”

Hayley Ryall, Mikey’s mum and founder of Mikey’s World, said: “It was a real pleasure to be nominated by Lift Broadlands, and they did so well presenting Mikey’s World, it made me feel really proud. The school has also supported the Avon and Somerset Bleed Kit Partnership by allowing us to place a bleed kit outside of the school and the students have ideas where they would like the rest of the £1,000 prize money to be spent on bleed kits in their local community.

“Mikey’s World has loved the students being involved, they are the community’s future and deserve to feel safe, equipped and aware of risks around them.”

Fashion Museum and Bath Spa Uni launch digital project FASHION Museum Bath is teaming up with Bath Spa University on a five-year project designed to widen digital access to its internationally recognised collection while creating new opportunities for learning, research and employment.

The partnership, running from 2026 to 2030, will focus on developing the museum’s Explore the Collection platform, a free online resource intended to bring together research, digital technology and community collaboration.

As part of the programme, the museum’s collection will be digitised on a larger scale, with at least 600 objects due to be captured in 3D. The work will also include expanded catalogue information, multimedia material and tools aimed at learning and creative exploration.

The initiative builds on the prototype version of Explore the Collection launched earlier this year, which features all 500 pieces from the museum’s Dress of the Year Collection.

The project brings together Fashion Museum Bath’s expertise in curating, exhibitions, engagement and museum practice with Bath Spa University’s work in fashion, photography, digital production, design, architecture,

Business Council over-ruled as inspector allows controversial arena lights

Office block suffering ‘overheating issues’

A PLANNING inspector has over-ruled Bath & North East Somerset Council and allowed a controversial lighting scheme at a dog agility arena near Bath.

Richard Bendall applied for permission to install 10 wooden lighting columns, each 2.47 metres high, along two sides of the arena at New Farm in Marksbury Lane, Priston, saying it would enable use of the arena during periods of limited daylight, particularly in winter months.

Priston Parish Council had lodged an objection saying: “The lighting illuminates the field as a bright green patch of land in an otherwise completely dark valley.

“This will still be the case even when the screens are fitted as the object of the lights is to illuminate the arena.

“The ecology of the valley has already been adversely altered, and our parishioners wish to see it restored to its previous state.

They want to see the dark valley restored.”

Neighbouring Dunkerton & Tunley Parish Council had echoed the concerns.

AN office block in the centre of Bath has “overheating issues” which are affecting staff’s wellbeing and productivity.

The problems at Queen Square House at Queen Square Place are revealed in a planning application submitted to Bath & North East Somerset Council.

Built around 1990, Georgianstyle Queen Square House provides open-plan office accommodation.

The application, which has been lodged by Farlington Enterprises Limited, is to install four external air conditioning units in a lightwell at the front of the building.

A statement with the application explains: “The proposed A/C units/plant are required as part of the necessary upgrading and modernisation of the existing office accommodation, which is currently experiencing overheating issues.

“This is primarily due to limited opportunities for natural ventilation and the absence of sufficient passive cooling measures, resulting in elevated internal temperatures during peak periods.

The planning inspector said the impact would be limited

the application on the grounds that it would harm the openness of the Green Belt through the introduction of structures and light spill into the open countryside.

They said it would be inappropriate development in the Green Belt, with no very special circumstances to outweigh the harm caused.

After the application was refused last June, Mr Bendall lodged an appeal.

Now the inspector appointed

Craft brewery near Bath set to expand

by the Secretary of State has concluded that the development “would not lead to disproportionate additions to the canine arena”.

Consequently, any impact on the openness of the Green Belt would be limited, and the scheme would not amount to inappropriate development.

However, the inspector refused a separate appeal by Mr Bendall for costs, concluding that the council had not acted unreasonably in this case.

“The resulting thermal discomfort has begun to adversely affect staff wellbeing, productivity, and compliance with workplace health and safety expectations.

“To address these issues and to ensure a safe and comfortable working environment, the installation of new A/C units (plant) is required to provide effective cooling and to maintain appropriate internal temperature levels throughout the year.

“The proposed A/C units (plant) are therefore considered entirely necessary to support the continued safe and efficient occupation of Queen Square House.”

A noise assessment is submitted with the planning application.

The planning reference is 26/01748/FUL and any comments must be submitted before 18th June.

Business boost for Oldfield Park with new shops and office space

A MICROBREWERY which has a craft beer tap room in Bath has been granted approval to expand.

Somer Valley beer is brewed at Knoll Farm in Peasedown St John. The microbrewery was established under permitted development rights and applicant Somer Valley Farms – which runs The Welly in Green Street – now proposes to expand the operation.

The proposed use involves expanding the area of the microbrewery from its existing 119 square metres to 223 square

metres. The building dates from the 1950s and was originally used to house dairy herd cattle.

The microbrewery, which is not open to the public, uses the same existing access as the farm shop at Knoll Farm.

The application said the existing microbrewery has not resulted in any noise concerns, and its expansion will not result in an increase in noise at the site which in any event is on a working farm with no neighbouring residential properties nearby.

Although the operation will be expanded, the increase will not take the operation beyond the definition of a microbrewery, as it will not produce more than 15,000 barrels of beer a year.

The building set to be redeveloped

THERE are plans to bring new businesses to Oldfield Park by refurbishing a vacant building.

The planning application is for the site in Shaftesbury Road that was formerly occupied by the Gloden tanning salon and neighbouring K&M Carpets.

The building is just round the corner from the shopping hub of Moorland Road.

The proposals include subdividing the existing units to create a third commercial space.

A Pilates studio and tanning salon are proposed, plus a coworking or office space to the rear, accessed via the side alleyway.

The application has been submitted to Bath & North East Somerset Council by Faro Workshop, who acquired the building in February with vacant possession.

They say the scheme will celebrate the character and history of the building, particularly the impressive roof structure.

The refurbishment will create “comfortable, energy-efficient spaces that contribute to the

commercial offering along Moorland Road, supporting local businesses, and enhancing the street scene”.

The plans include replacing the central roof with an energyefficient structure offering additional floor space.

The shopfronts will be refurbished to present a “welcoming frontage”.

One parking space will be lost but there will be provision for four bicycles.

The planning reference is 26/01702/FUL and any comments on the proposals must be submitted to the council by Wednesday 3rd June.

New bid for solar scheme at Bath social housing Becky Feather Reporter

A HOUSING association was refused permission earlier this month to install solar panels on a block of flats in the city, but has since submitted another bid in the hope of addressing the concerns of Bath & North East Somerset Council.

LiveWest runs Clarkson House in Great Stanhope Street, where there are 54 flats over five levels.

Last year the council approved LiveWest’s plans for major repairs to the social housing properties where there have been damp and mould issues.

Then earlier this year LiveWest (which recently merged with Bromford Flagship) applied to put photovoltaic (PV) panels on the south and west-facing sides of the roof of Clarkson House. It said they would provide renewable energy to the residents and reduce the building’s carbon emissions.

In its application for a certificate of lawfulness for a proposed development, LiveWest said it had an “overarching obligation” to meet three criteria within its properties: • To achieve the government target to meet the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) C Rating by 2030.

• To achieve the government’s Decent Homes Standard.

• To achieve the recent implementation of Awaab’s Law which prioritises addressing damp and mould issues alongside emergency repairs.

The application said Clarkson House is not Georgian but a replica dating from the 1980s, designed to sympathetically match with the existing area, and it does not easily stand out as a more modern building.

It said it is in the setting of multiple listed buildings and within the Bath Conservation Area. “Therefore, it is of high importance that any works

carried out to the building are done with the wider city in mind.

“The installation of PV panels would be to a roof from the 1980s and would not be visible from either street level or from neighbouring properties and would have a minimal impact on the visual character of the building and surrounding area.”

But council planning officers said they could not conclude that the proposals would be lawful.

They described Clarkson House

as being in a “very sensitive” location and they did not have information on the types of panels of fixings that would be used, nor how much the PV would protrude beyond the roof slope.

They said they had twice sought further information from the applicant, but it was not received.

Now LiveWest has submitted a revised application to the local authority, which includes more details.

Planning Round-up Retrospective HMO application is approved

The initial funding was meant as a short-term measure

FREE school meal holiday support in Bath and North East Somerset is set to change, with the council moving away from a blanket voucher system after this summer.

Bath & North East Somerset Council said families will still receive vouchers over the summer school holidays, but after that support will be focused more directly on households facing financial difficulty.

The authority said the change is not the end of support, but a shift towards a model designed to respond to genuine hardship while also helping families improve their longer-term financial stability.

The current vouchers are paid for through the Crisis & Resilience Fund, which is backed by the government.

The council said this funding was created as a short-term measure for people facing financial hardship, rather than as a permanent voucher scheme, and that the rules do not allow councils to continue running universal holiday voucher programmes indefinitely.

member for resources, said: “Families should be reassured this is about making sure help is targeted, fair and sustainable within the government’s rules of the funding we receive.

“The Crisis & Resilience Fund was never intended to provide universal vouchers indefinitely, but it remains there to support people when they face genuine financial crisis.

“Alongside this, our new practical support will help households build greater financial stability for the future to prevent the need for crisis payments.”

The council said families who are struggling will still be able to apply for support through the Crisis & Resilience Fund, with cash payments made where possible to give people more flexibility.

Help with essential costs, including food, will also continue through the council’s existing Local Welfare Provision scheme.

Alongside that, the authority said it will work with partners to provide budgeting advice, support with bills and debt, and help for families looking to maximise their income.

BATH & North East Somerset Council has elected Councillor Shaun Stephenson-McGall as its new chair for 2026-27.

The appointment was made at the authority’s annual meeting on 14th May, with Councillor Stephenson-McGall taking on the non-political position for the year ahead.

The role involves chairing formal council meetings, supporting communities across Bath and North East Somerset, recognising landmark local occasions and welcoming royal visitors and other VIP guests.

Councillor Stephenson-McGall has a long history in local government, having first been elected in 1999. He represented Oldfield Park ward until 2023 and now serves as the councillor for Timsbury. He was vice chair of the council last year, previously served as chair in 2022-23, and was Mayor of Bath in 2010-11.

Speaking after his election, he said: “It is with great pride that I

take up the role as Chair of Bath & North East Somerset Council and I want to thank the outgoing Chair Councillor Liz Hardman for her dedicated service over the past year. It’s an honour to serve in this role as Chair twice, firstly representing Oldfield Park in Bath and now as the councillor for Timsbury in North East Somerset. I will enjoy presiding over the Citizenship Ceremonies and showcasing and supporting the work of our parish and town councils through the Parish Liaison meetings.”

The new vice chair of the council is Councillor Dine Romero, who represents Southdown.

She said: “I look forward to supporting, and deputising for Councillor Stephenson-McGall in his role as Chair of Council. I am honoured to be chosen by my colleague for this important role and through it we will continue to support our diverse communities across Bath and North East Somerset.”

A retrospective application to change the use of an end-ofterrace property in Whiteway to a house in multiple occupation (HMO) has been approved by Bath & North East Somerset Council.

Ladet Properties’ application for the four-bed HMO at 62 Rosewarn Close said the change of use took place more than two years ago.

Council planners said it brings the number of HMOs within a 100-metre radius to eight, which is a 9.76% concentration. The threshold is 10%. Council records show the neighbouring property is also a HMO. Although No. 62 does not have any off-street parking, it is considered to be in a sustainable location The plans show a shed will be provided in the rear garden for four bikes.

Alterations approved at country house Plan to carry out internal and external alterations to a Grade II country house near Bath have been approved by Bath & North East Somerset Council.

The scheme at South Stoke Hall in Packhorse Lane, South Stoke, include a new opening within an outside wall to improve access to the rear courtyard via new timber French doors. There will also be repairs to the courtyard and surrounding outbuildings.

Four tries for Arundell as rampaging Super Saturday for Bath seal semi-final place Lansdown with big wins Richard Briggs Reporter

HENRY Arundell scored four tries as Bath Rugby bounced back from their three-match losing run to thrash Newcastle Red Bulls at The Rec and guarantee their place in the Gallagher PREM semi-finals.

In a game that marked Charlie Ewels’ 200th appearance for the Blue, Black & White, the home side grabbed 11 touchdowns as they dismantled the struggling North Easterners 69-12 on Saturday 16th May. Johann van Graan’s side secured a 31-0 advantage by half-time but came under pressure in the third quarter, playing much of it with 14 men after Tom Dunn received a 20-minute red card late in the second half.

However, Bath were reinvigorated by the arrival of six replacements on the hour, Max Ojomoh producing a brilliant cameo.

Bath opened the scoring in the eighth minute, Josh Bayliss offloading to Ted Hill for a shortrange try in the left corner.

Arundell notched his first score in the 12th minute. After receiving the ball from Cameron Redpath he was tap tackled by Simón Benítez Cruz just outside the Newcastle 22 but picked himself up and completed his charge to the line, going over to the left of the posts.

Arundell scored again in the 21st minute, surging away from 35 metres after a short pass from Finn Russell and touching down in the left corner. Russell converted.

The Blue, Black & White secured the four-try bonus point in the 24th minute. Russell passed to

Redpath 15 metres out and the centre ran on and dived to the ground, theatrically, behind the posts. Russell booted the extras.

Bath’s fifth try came in the 26th minute, Guy Pepper making ground and releasing Bayliss on halfway. Bayliss powered on, rode a tackle from Josh Hodge and dived over on the right, Russell majoring.

Arundell had what would have been his hat-trick try disallowed for a foot in touch before the home side suffered a big blow when Dunn got his marching orders in the 38th minute for head-on-head contact with George McGuigan.

Newcastle were the first to score in the second half. Following a spell of pressure by the Red Bulls, Alex Hearle crossed in the right corner from close range after receiving a lofted pass from Benítez Cruz.

Within seconds of van Graan bringing on his bomb squad, Arundell claimed his treble.

Russell fed Santi Carreras on the Newcastle 10-metre line, and the Argentine made 10 metres before unleashing Arundell for a dash to the left corner.

But in the 63rd minute, the visitors added their second try – this stemming from a misplaced pass by Russell. Hearle was again the scorer, touching down on the right, and Brett Connon landed the two points.

From then on, Bath scored at will.

Carreras dotted down in the right corner in the 66th minute after being released 10 metres out by Russell, who converted to leave the Blue, Black & White 43-12 in front.

minute after a high tackle on Alfie Barbeary. And Bath were ruthless as they made the most of their numerical advantage.

Almost immediately, Carreras scored on the right. Having being fed by Arundell, Carreras intended to pass to Joe Cokanasiga and give the right wing a simple try. But Cokanasiga signalled for Carreras to keep going.

In the 72nd minute, Arundell galloped away from 42 metres to nab his fourth try, touching down on the right. Russell converted to stretch the lead to 55-12.

Great determination by Dan Frost in the 74th minute – he made a 55-metre run and shrugged off a tackle from Connon – led to him crossing in the left corner, Russell converting.

And Chris Harris scored against the club he will join in the summer when, in the 76th minute, Cokanasiga and Ojomoh did the groundwork and the 2021 British & Irish Lion went over on the right. Russell majored.

TEAM Bath completed their home programme in the NXT Gen League by overcoming LexisNexis Dragons 58-52 in front of a big and appreciative crowd on Saturday 16th May. Lansdown 1st XI humiliated fallen giants Taunton St Andrews by 152 runs when the sides met at Combe Park on Saturday 16th May in West of England Premier League Premier 2 Bristol / Somerset.

The hosts were asked to bat and piled up 291-9 in their 50 overs.

The innings was built on a secondwicket stand between Josh Smith and Praneel Choughule that yielded 78 runs.

The pair were separated when Choughule was bowled by Rufus Williams-Pritchard for 36 off 47 balls, his knock including a six and four boundaries. Smith was next to go, trapped leg before by Joe Wadham for an 81-ball 58 that contained two sixes and eight fours, to leave Lansdown 143-3.

There were good contributions from the middle order, with skipper Jordan Smith (23), Marc Lezar, Sam Pearce (27) and Dan Lezar racking up the runs.

The Lezars excelled, Marc facing 55 deliveries for his 49 and hitting two sixes and half-a-dozen fours and Dan needing only 17 balls to make 35 which included three sixes and two boundaries.

St Andrews’ Toby WilliamsThomas bagged 3-59 off 10 overs.

But his side conceded 44 extras, including 33 wides.

The team from the county town collapsed to 35-3 in reply.

Lansdown 2nd XI drubbed Bath 3rd XI by 72 runs at the Brownsword Ground in Bristol & District Cricket Association Division One on 16th May. Put in, the guests made 248-6 off their rain-reduced 36 overs.

Openers Tejas Bante (58 from 60 balls) and Sam Avery (26) gave Lansdown a fine start by putting on 84 for the first wicket.

And skipper Dan Veal (59) and Harry Veal (20) added 53 for the third wicket. However, the thirdbiggest contribution came from extras – 54 including 36 wides.

A wicket apiece from Eddie Steedman and Harry Veal reduced Bath to 12-2 in response.

The hosts crashed to 79-5 but were steeled by a sixth-wicket stand worth 65.

However, with Tom Henley ousting the final four batters on his way to 4-23 in 5.1 overs, Bath were sent back for 176 off 35.1 overs.

UR recent two-day fixture proved to be another successful period of racing here at Bath, and it was fantastic that both meetings ran so smoothly during what has been an extremely busy time for the team.

Leading into the fixtures, there had been unsettled weather forecast and the possibility of significant rainfall. But as I have come to expect, the rain largely went around us.

It is quite common for this to occur. Forecasts can change very quickly, and showers often seem to skirt around the racecourse altogether.

The going remained firm, good to firm in places across both racedays and produced some competitive finishes, despite a

headwind being present.

We continued to make use of rail movements and fresh running lines to ensure the best possible ground was available, and we removed the cutaway for day two and extended the false rail to keep runners up the more recovered running line up the middle of the course.

Since those racedays, however, we have finally seen some more significant rainfall, which has been very welcome from a grounds perspective.

As we look ahead to our next fixture – today, Friday 22nd May – I would anticipate the going being somewhere around good.

The rainfall also gave us the opportunity to apply another wetting agent to the track earlier this week.

This is an important part of our summer ground management programme and helps the surface retain moisture more effectively during warmer periods.

With higher temperatures forecast over the coming weeks, I think we will now really begin to see strong recovery and growth across the course.

The combination of warmth and natural moisture should create optimum conditions for plant health, which is encouraging as we head into the summer months.

The team have been assisting with retaining the moisture levels in the track by watering daily with our bowser and rain gun, so thank you again to them for their efforts!

It certainly does not get any

quieter for us, as shortly after today’s fixture we race again on Tuesday 26th May, when we will stage another transferred fixture from Brighton Racecourse.

We have been happy to assist while they continue preparations ahead of recommencing racing shortly, and it has been a good example of racecourses working together to keep the show on the road.

The support we have had from the Chepstow grounds team has been very helpful as well, and we will no doubt be heading over the Severn Bridge during the summer to repay the favour.

Looking further ahead, it is hard to believe we are already almost in June, which brings two fixtures

scheduled during the month.

Among them is our popular Ladies Day on Saturday 13th June, which promises to be one of the highlights of the summer calendar here at Bath.

There will be plenty going on throughout the day both on and off the track, and we are especially looking forward to the entertainment continuing after racing, with music on the Final Furlong Lawn.

It should be a fantastic occasion and a wonderful atmosphere for racegoers to enjoy.

TEAM Bath completed their home programme in the NXT Gen League by overcoming LexisNexis Dragons 58-52 in front of a big and appreciative crowd on Saturday 16th May. The result handed the Blue & Gold their third victory of the campaign and lifted them two points clear of the Welsh side at the bottom of the table.

The hosts produced one of their best performances of the year in seeing off the Cardiff-based Dragons.

An entertaining first half ended with Team Bath leading 28-24.

And the Blue & Gold went on to make a decisive break during an excellent third quarter, stretching their advantage to 48-38.

The Dragons edged the final quarter 14-10 but Team Bath – inspired by a most valuable player performance from Lottie Robinson – were full value for their success.

BATH City Women completed their season by winning 2-1 at Downend Flyers on Sunday 17th May. The result at Johnson Road Playing Fields in Mangotsfield consolidated the Romans’ sixth place in Shield Services Group South West Regional Women’s League Division One North.

City ended up with 11 wins and three draws from their 22 league matches, their 36 points being just two fewer than the total gained by fifth-placed Mangotsfield United Women.

Below-strength Bath almost broke the deadlock in their finale when a corner from Amy Key crashed against a post.

However, the visitors built up a 2-0 lead by half-time.

First, Clodagh Moran pivoted and unleashed a 28th-minute 30-yarder that gave Downend keeper Eve Herriman no chance.

Odd Down ‘perfect fit’ for new boss Smith Richard Briggs Reporter

NEWLY appointed manager Tom Smith says Odd Down are the perfect fit for him – and he believes the sky is the limit for the club in 2026-27.

Smith, who led Welton Rovers back into the Western League Premier Division four years ago, was unveiled as the Down’s boss on Saturday 16th May. A statement from the Bath club said: “Odd Down AFC are delighted to announce Tom Smith as our new first-team manager for the 2026-27 season.

“Tom arrives after a couple years away from management.

“He achieved huge success at Welton Rovers, gaining promotion to the Western League Premier Division.

“Welcome to Tom and we will be announcing his backroom staff and squad additions in due course.”

Smith managed Midsomer Norton-based Welton for five years, masterminding their promotion from Western League Division One, via the play-offs, in 2022.

He now returns to Western League Division One with the Down – and he is confident that big things lie ahead for his new club.

Following his arrival at the Lew Hill Memorial Ground, Smith said: “After a couple of years away from management, I’m thrilled to be appointed as the new firstteam manager at Odd Down.

“As soon as I met with members of the club, it was clear that this would be the perfect fit for me.

“I can’t wait to start working with an already very talented and youthful squad.

“And with the addition of some new recruits, I truly believe the sky’s the limit for us this season.

“The hard work begins now for myself and my soon-to-beannounced management team as we prepare for what I hope will be an incredibly successful campaign.

“I can’t wait to meet everyone connected with the club and begin this exciting new chapter together.”

The Down’s managerial hot seat became vacant when Jamie Walter stood down last month.

Walter is remaining involved with the club.

Odd Down Development were unable to finish their incredible season with a third trophy as they were beaten in the Somerset Intermediate Cup final on Friday 15th May. The Devs went into the showpiece – against Taunton club Racehorse Rovers at Bowdens Park, Cheddar – having won the Trophies of Radstock Mid Somerset League Division One championship and the Bryan Wells Charity Cup. But Racehorse secured a 1-0 victory thanks to a first-half goal from Freddie Harper.

SAM Young hit 137 as Bath 1st XI made an impressive 359-7 off 50 overs at Frocester 1st XI and bagged their first victory of the West of England Premier League Premier 1 campaign.

The city side’s 17-run success over the Gloucestershire outfit at Pounds Close on Saturday 16th May hauled them off the bottom of the table and up to fifth place.

Asked to bat, Bath made an excellent start with Jack Scrivens (22) and Ben Wells (77 from 69 balls, containing four sixes and eight boundaries) putting on 79 for the first wicket.

When Scrivens became first man out, Wells was joined by Harry Dixon (69 from 63 balls, featuring three sixes and five fours) and they added 42 for the second wicket.

But the star partnership was the third-wicket stand between Dixon and Young, which produced 106 runs in 14.2 overs.

Dixon was the man to go – but Young continued to punish the Frocester attack, eventually being caught by Wimma Perera off Shafiq Maroofkhel to leave Bath 343-5.

Young – who put on 87 for the fifth wicket with captain Harry Ellison (21) – faced 84 balls and hammered eight sixes and 10 boundaries during his 105 minutes at the crease.

There were two wickets each for Maroofkhel and Ed Middleton.

Rain left Frocester chasing 264 from 32 overs for victory.

They looked highly unlikely to get anywhere close when they crumbled to 67-4, Josh Sutton picking up two of those wickets.

The next day, Bath 1st XI overcame hosts Bridgwater 1st XI on a bowl-off after rain ruined the sides’ West of England Premier League T20 Prem Group 7 encounter at The Parks.

After the visitors were inserted, openers Scrivens (39 from 16 balls, with four sixes and two boundaries) and Wells (73 off 34 balls, with three sixes and 11 fours) put the Bridgy attack to the sword, bringing up the 100 in under six overs.

Ellison was 25 not out as Bath were 147-3 from 12.4 overs when the weather ended chances of further play. Bridgwater’s Seth Locke finished with 2-27 off three overs.

So the teams opted for a bowloff, the guests winning 3-0 to progress to the next stage.

Bath are now in Round 2 Group 1, where they will face Bristol 1st XI and Clevedon 1st XI at Longwood in Failand on Sunday 14th June.
