BATH & North East Somerset Council has launched a consultation on its draft budget proposals for 2026/27, asking residents for their views on plans to invest in care, generate income, make savings and balance the books.

The council says it is facing significant financial pressures, driven by rising demand and costs in adult and children’s social care, as well as uncertainty over future government funding.

A major Fair Funding Review, which will overhaul how councils are financed, is expected to result in a reduction in money received from central government.

Councillor Mark Elliott, cabinet member for resources, said: “At a time when many councils have been forced into cutbacks, we are committed to protecting and investing in frontline services, including adult and children’s services, as well as maintaining spend on our roads, culture and keeping our environment clean and green.

“The government has not yet told us what our funding looks like

for next year, but we are pretty certain it will be less. Its funding calculations also assume that all councils will raise council tax by the maximum level of 4.99%.

“We don’t agree with these changes and believe that ministers should ensure no council faces a budget cut.

“But we take our responsibility for managing taxpayers’ money very seriously and have used the best available modelling and advice to put together a set of proposals we are considering bringing to council in February.

“We believe this will allow us to achieve a balanced budget once the government settlement is confirmed."

Among the proposals is a 4.99% increase in cuncil tax, including a 2% adult social care precept that would be ring-fenced to support the most vulnerable. Even with this rise, the council expects to retain the third lowest council tax level in the South West.

work to improve speech and language skills in young children to boost long-term educational outcomes.

There is a proposed greater focus on prevention, such as early intervention to reduce the number and severity of falls among people over 65.

On income and efficiency, early proposals include enforcement against drivers who ignore yellow box junction markings, a review of parking charges and a small increase in park and ride fares.

Changes to opening hours at recycling centres in Bath and Welton are also being considered, although residents would still be able to use at least one centre seven days a week.

The council is also looking at altering waste and recycling collection days to make services more efficient.

The consultation sets out the measures needed to balance the budget while continuing to deliver services, and asks residents for feedback on the potential impacts of the proposals.

Responses will be used to help minimise and mitigate any negative effects where possible.

Crews tackle significant blaze at Larkhall home CREWS from multiple fire stations worked to tackle a blaze at a property in the Larkhall area of Bath in the early hours of Monday 8th December.

A fire initially damaged the ground floor of the property in Eden Terrace on Eldon Place at around 7.30pm on Sunday 7th December.

Eight firefighters using breathing apparatus extinguished the fire using high-pressure hose reels and covering jets. Crews from more stations were called out again later in the evening after the fire reignited and affected the roof, known as “rekindling”.

A local resident reported seeing smoke ‘pouring’ from the roof of the house at around 11.30pm.

Crews from the Bath, Hicks Gate, Radstock and Kingswood fire stations attended the scene.

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 7.31pm on Sunday 7th December to an

incident in Bath.

“We sent one double-crewed land ambulance, a rapid response vehicle and the hazardous area response team to the scene.

“We conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Royal United Hospital Bath.”

A spokesperson for Avon Fire & Rescue Service said: “On 7th December at 7.30pm, crews from Bath, Hicks Gate and Kingswood were called to a house fire on Eden Terrace in Bath.

“Upon arrival, crews found the property well alight on the ground floor of the building.

“Eight firefighters entered the property wearing breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire with high-pressure hose reels and covering jets.

“Fans were then used to clear the smoke from the property, and thermal imaging cameras were in use to check for hot spots.

“Police and Ambulance colleagues were also on the scene. One casualty self-rescued

“At 11.22pm, crews from Bath, Kingswood, Hicks Gate and Radstock were re-called to the incident after the property’s roof re-ignited.

“Ladders were used, including the turn table ladder, to fight the

fire externally, with high-pressure hose reels and two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.

“Neighbouring properties were also evacuated but were thankfully unaffected by the fire.

“Crews from Bath remained on the scene until 5.46am on 8th December to monitor any hotspots and ensure the fire would not re-ignite.”

Work begins on fire station without permission Becky Feather Reporter

AVON Fire & Rescue Service has apologised for starting work on its proposed temporary fire station in Bath without waiting for planning approval.

Plans to demolish Bath Fire Station in Bathwick Street, and build a replacement modern and fully sustainable facility on the site, were supported by the council’s planning committee last month, with members agreeing to delegate the power to officers to grant planning permission once legal agreements were completed.

They were signed off last week.

To maintain critical emergency services during the 18-month redevelopment, a temporary fire station is proposed on the former Unigate Dairies site at Roseberry Place, off Lower Bristol Road in Twerton.

The planned modular buildings include a station office, vehicle storage bay, staff gym and parking. Work started earlier this month, even though Bath & North East Somerset Council has not given its stamp of approval.

The council’s decision target date was 13th October.

On Wednesday, 10th December, a council scientific officer was still chasing information about the site’s suitability for its intended use.

In an email posted on the planning portal, they said: “Based on the information provided and previous site history, there remain several points that require

clarification and additional detail to ensure risks are appropriately managed during the works.”

These include historical documentation, ground gas and vapour risks, water supply pipework and encapsulated asbestos.

The email noted: “Notwithstanding the temporary nature of the development, the applicant is required to demonstrate that the site will be suitable for its intended use and will not give rise to unacceptable risks to human health, the environment, or controlled waters for the development and occupation.”

Avon Fire & Rescue Service said in a statement: “Bath Fire Station is scheduled to close in February 2026, ahead of the planned rebuild of the station.

“Planning permission for this new station was recommended for approval last month.

To continue to provide an emergency response to people visiting, living, and working in the city of Bath during the re-build, the station will be moving to a temporary site within the city.

“To meet the February 2026 closure date, essential preparatory works at the temporary site needed to begin.

“These works are critical to maintaining our emergency response capability and ensuring the safety of the city of Bath throughout the construction period. Avon Fire & Rescue Service remains fully engaged in the planning process and is optimistic that permission will be granted soon.

“We continue to work closely with the council and the local community to ensure residents

are kept informed, consulted on the plans, and aware of any changes in their area.”

Councillor Matt McCabe, cabinet member for built environment, housing and sustainable development, said: “Avon Fire & Rescue has proposed a temporary fire station at Lower Bristol Road as an essential measure to maintain emergency services cover for the Bath area during the redevelopment of the main fire station on Bathwick Street.

“The planning application for redevelopment of the main fire station received support from the council’s planning committee at their meeting on 19th November and the application for the temporary station is expected to be decided by the end of December.

“We have been informed by Avon Fire & Rescue that it chose to begin works ahead of the decision to ensure the project remains on course and emergency service cover for residents is unaffected.

“We have received an apology and assurances that future works will be co-ordinated with us.”

Historic England had recommended that the Art Deco fire station be Grade II listed, but the government refused, saying it was “not sufficiently special”.

National charity the Twentieth Century Society (C20) has been leading efforts to save it from demolition and a review of the government minister’s decision not to list it has been under way.

However, the Department for Culture, Media & Sport has said the designation review process is non-statutory, so it is under no statutory obligation to respond within a specific timeframe.

News in Brief New 20mph limit in lanes near Bath A new 20mph limit is coming into force in the lanes between Saltford and Keynsham. The new speed limit replaces the existing de-restricted speed limit on Manor Road and Courtenay Road. Following a request

by Saltford Parish Council in September 2023, Bath & North East Somerset Council has now agreed to introduce 20mph, which is set to come into effect on 29th December. The scheme is part of B&NES Council’s 2025/26 Local Active Travel and Safety Programme. Saltford Parish Council says the change will make the lanes safer for walkers, cyclists, horse riders and all road users while preserving the rural character of the area.

B&NES Council received 38 responses expressing support for the proposals and no objections.

Saltford Parish Council has thanked everyone who supported lowering the limit.

Trees facing the chop at Prior Park site The National Trust is seeking permission to fell nine ash trees affected by disease at Prior Park Landscape Gardens. The application made to B&NES Council says there is “significant dieback” in the crown, with branches dropping. The National Trust plans to remove the trees, which are at various locations at the gardens, for the safety of the public. Ash dieback is caused by a fungus which originated in Asia and spread to Europe.

With 26 issues printed this year, we’ve certainly covered a lot of news, both in print and online.

As things now get a bit quieter for Christmas, we’ll be looking ahead to the New Year and getting ready for whatever 2026 will bring.

Like many businesses, our costs have continued to increase this year, though unlike other newspapers, we can’t simply put our cover price up – our newspaper is free for our readers and always will be.

Instead, we’re working more closely with local businesses to prove the importance of local news, newspapers and supporting proper local journalism. We’re building strong connections in communities across Bath – we genuinely love talking to people in the street to see how they are, talk about issues they face and how we can help them.

The real testament to our work is the sheer number of copies of the newspaper being picked up across Bath every week – so much so that we can’t keep up! More

than 6,000 copies are distributed every issue, and we're working on ways to meet our growing demand.

Extra distribution points are being added next year, along with more locations hosting copies.

Council spending thousands on empty property in The Circus John Wimperis

AN unusual legal situation means Bath & North East Somerset Council is spending thousands of pounds a year on an empty property in one of Bath’s most iconic locations.

Number 4, The Circus is an impressive townhouse on one of the city’s most famous streets — but the charity which owns it is effectively defunct, and the multi-million-pound house has been standing empty for years.

Meanwhile, Bath & North East Somerset Council, which is responsible for the charity’s administration, is having to pay to maintain the asset.

Maintenance on the empty mansion cost the council £18,600 last year, and it is projected to cost another £6,500 this year.

Separately, the council owes the charity a currently unknown sum of money for dilapidations the building suffered while the council leased it from 1973 until 2019.

A 2017 survey put this at £291,430 – but a new survey will now need to be carried out to bring the figure up to date.

Now the council is trying to restore the charity so it can both settle its debt and stop spending thousands on the upkeep of the unused mansion.

The Circus was begun in 1754

by John Wood the Elder and completed in 1768 by his son John Wood the Younger, who went on to design the Royal Crescent.

recently featured in the BBC programme Empire with David Olusoga, where the historian revealed how money from the British Empire funded much of the city’s wealth.

In 1768, Number 4 was owned

by James Plunkett, whose family made their fortune owning enslaved people and plantations in Jamaica.

By the 1960s, however, the home was owned by Bath couple Charles and Frances Cooke, who decided in their wills that it should be preserved as a Georgian house and exhibited to the public.

On Mrs Cooke’s death in 1970, a charity was set up to own the house and fulfil this aim.

Bath City Council was made responsible for the charity’s administration and appointing its trustees, despite it remaining a separate legal entity.

Today, the charity owns the house and no other assets and currently

has no trustees.

Now a committee of Bath & North East Somerset Council — which replaced the city council in 1996 — has voted to appoint four new trustees.

A report which went before the council’s charitable trust board on 9th December said: “This will allow the trust to settle final financial obligations and allow the trust to appropriately dispose of the property and be wound up.”

The three councillors on the committee voted unanimously to approve the appointment of trustees “with the purpose of supporting the dissolution of the charity”.

Graham Page, who sits on the committee as an independent member, criticised the wording, which he said appeared to limit what the charity could do.

The council’s monitoring officer said the trustees, when appointed, would not actually

have to dissolve the charity as the council could not bind them to a course of action.

The four trustees will be chosen by the council’s political groups in line with the council’s political balance. Although trustees do not have to be councillors, they are likely to be because noncouncillors could be personally liable for issues with the charity.

The committee meeting also heard from Avon and Gloucestershire Gardens Trust and a neighbour who called for the Georgian Garden to be preserved.

The Georgian layout of the garden was discovered buried under clay in the 1980s and restored to how it would have appeared in Georgian times. It is open to the public from the rear of the property on Gravel Walk.

It had been the Cookes’ intention that the whole house be exhibited to the public, but the house itself has only been open one day a year on Bath & North East Somerset’s heritage open days.

In the 1970s, the nearby Number 1, Royal Crescent had recently opened for the same purpose, so Number 4 The Circus was instead leased to the council in 1973 on a lease which specifically stated that the house could be used “as a museum of costume.”

The house was used as overflow space from the Museum of Costume, later Bath Fashion Museum, at the Assembly Rooms around the corner. It was later sub-let to Bath Spa University for the Fashion Research Centre.

Despite the Fashion Museum being currently homeless and its

collection stored in a glove factory in Wiltshire, there are no plans to use Number 4 in connection with the museum again.

The council’s cabinet member for economic and cultural sustainable development, Councillor Paul Roper (Kingsmead, Liberal Democrat), said: “Number 4 The Circus is a beautiful Grade I townhouse but it simply does not provide the space or scope to deliver our aspirations.

“Nor could it be considered as a temporary exhibition space as the costs to deliver that short-term offering would be prohibitive and it would also be a distraction to the delivery of the new museum.”

The council is planning to open the new Bath Fashion Museum at the Old Post Office on New Bond Street in 2030.

Councillor Roper said: “When the National Trust repossessed the Assembly Rooms, the Bath fashion collection lost its longstanding home.

“As a council, we took the decision to find a new location that would create a new, leading attraction for the city.

“To that end we acquired the old Post Office site in New Bond Street, with assistance from the combined authority, and we are now developing a wonderful, purpose-built, space for this world-class collection.

“This includes a significant upgrade to the public realm in New Bond Street and Broad Street, making the new museum accessible for all.

“This new museum will be of international significance.”

Bath Press developers breach planning conditions again BATH & North East Somerset Council has fired a warning shot to the Bath Press developers over another planning breach.

The site on Lower Bristol Road is being redeveloped for housing by City & Country.

Flouting the planning constraints for construction traffic, cement mixer lorries have been travelling to and from the site along the A431 through the villages of Kelston, Swineford and Bitton.

This week Councillor Matt McCabe, cabinet member for built environment and sustainable development, told the Echo: “The council issued a Breach of Condition Notice to the developers of the Bath Press

site on 11th December which requires compliance within 28 days.”

If the developers do not stick to the construction management plan after this time, they will be committing an offence.

This week Simon VernonHarcourt, design and planning director for City & Country, said: “We acknowledge there was a breach of condition, which has resulted in the construction management plan agreed with the council not being followed to the letter as it should have been.

“City & Country takes this very seriously, and has proactively made several changes, including appointing a new and

experienced project director who will take responsibility for running the scheme.

“The project director will also be reaching out to the local school {Oldfield Park Infant School} and councillors to discuss matters further and ensure the smooth running of the project moving forward.”

In October we reported that tipper trucks taking waste material from the Bath Press site to Wick Quarry had been using the A431 and A4175 through Oldland Common as an unofficial short cut. There were believed to have been between 150 and 200 daily trips.

speed that some of the vehicles were travelling through Bitton, particularly at school rush hour, and about the impact on the bridge over the River Avon in the village as three years ago it was revealed that it might need strengthening or even replacing.

Councillor McCabe told the Echo at the time that the developers

had been asked to remind all their contractors of the approved route, and the situation would be monitored in case any further issues arose.

The developers currently have an appeal lodged with the Secretary of State to keep the 88-inch TV screen on top of their sales suite next to the crossroads where Windsor Bridge Road, Brook Road and Lower Bristol Road converge.

Two applications to the council to keep it in place have been turned down, with officers highlighting that it “prejudices public safety” at the busy junction, looks out of place and the illumination impacts local residents.

Dates announced for 18-tonne weight limit being 2026 Christmas Market proposed for notoriously steep hill BATH’S Christmas Market will return in 2026, with Bath & North East Somerset Council confirming it will run from 26th November to 13th December.

The announcement comes hot on the heels of this year’s 25th anniversary market, which finished on Sunday, 14th December. Early data suggests footfall was higher than in 2024, when an estimated 444,000 people visited Bath to enjoy the festive celebrations.

This year’s milestone event saw more than 250 businesses take part, 65% of them from Bath and the surrounding area, alongside 32 community groups.

Festive activities in the city are continuing, with the Victorian carousel arriving on Stall Street and Bath on Ice at Royal Victoria Park still welcoming skaters.

Councillor Manda Rigby said: “I have been to this year’s Christmas Market every day and it’s been absolutely wonderful to chat with stallholders who come back year after year, and visitors who have absolutely loved the experience.

“The council is so proud that ours is one of the most successful Christmas markets in Europe, supporting hundreds of jobs and local businesses and attracting international interest.

“We are very much looking

forward to once again spreading the festive cheer and welcoming stallholders, charities and visitors from near and far in 2026.”

Local traders say the event plays a key role in their year.

“The opportunity to connect directly with customers, many of whom return year after year, has had a lasting impact on my brand’s development. One of the aspects I value most about the market is the sense of community it fosters and the event improves every year.

“I feel genuinely supported by the council’s events team, whose dedication and behind the scenes work to coordinate the market is outstanding - it shows in every detail.”

The council has also confirmed that local events company Muddy Dog has been awarded a contract to deliver Bath Christmas Market up to 2030.

Alex Clarke, co-director of Muddy Dog, said: “We are thrilled to have been awarded the production tender for Bath Christmas Market after proudly working alongside the event for over a decade.”

AN 18-tonne weight restriction is being proposed on a route on the outskirts of Bath, which is a notoriously difficult climb for HGVs. The weight limit order is being proposed between the Globe Roundabout on the A4 Bristol Road and the Red Lion Roundabout on the A367 junction with Wellsway.

The route includes Pennyquick, Whiteway Road, Rush Hill and Frome Road.

Bath & North East Somerset Council says there would be “no defined alternative”, but there are “options”.

“HGVs can either drive into and out of Bath on the ‘A’ classified road network, which would involve passing through the Clean Air Zone, or make decisions earlier in their journey regarding the route that they intend to follow.

“For example, a driver passing through the Radstock area heading towards Bristol could choose to follow the A37, and vice-versa.”

Steve Hedges, said: “We are very supportive of this proposal. For too long residents have been blighted by through HGVs on this route.

“Residents will be very supportive of the implementation of the scheme and would like robust enforcement.”

He said it is not an appropriate route for through HGVs, evidenced by the number that break down.

Councillor Duncan Hounsell (Saltford, Liberal Democrat) said: “I am fully in support of this proposal which will take the heaviest vehicles away from Pennyquick. The road has bends and steep slopes and is unsuitable for these vehicles” At the informal consultation stage, the police warned it would not be possible to dedicate an

enforcement presence to such a restriction, saying: “The signage and any other physical measures to be introduced to enforce / heighten motorist awareness of the proposed scheme is therefore of importance. Any enforcement will be targeted and intelligenceled.”

In response, council officers said people would be able to report any abuse of weight restrictions on the council’s website as an alternative to enforcement by the police, and it was proposed that the direction signing at each end of the route would be significantly modified to include advance warning of the new weight restriction from all directions.

“Warning of the gradient of Whiteway Road would also be added to some of these signs as appropriate,” they said.

Court order bans ‘prolific’ Bath shoplifter from string of stores A BATH woman known to be a “prolific” shoplifter has been banned from several stores in the city centre.

Hannah Sandover, of Newbridge Road, appeared before city magistrates on Wednesday 10th December in relation to an assault on a shop worker at Superdrug in Westgate Street – one of the stores where she had been caught shoplifting.

During the hearing, magistrates heard that 25-year-old Sandover is known by police as a “prolific offender” with 171 occurrences on the police system, even though her list of previous convictions includes just one for shoplifting.

On 14th February Sandover’s victim had gone out in her lunch break to the Greggs opposite Superdrug when she was assaulted in what prosecutor Maree Doyle told the court was a “deeply unpleasant” and unprovoked incident.

In a statement to the police a few days afterwards, the victim, whose hair was grabbed during the attack, said she had done nothing to deserve being assaulted and asked why people should be allowed to come into the store and steal.

Sandover had pleaded guilty in September to the offence when magistrates adjourned the case for a pre-sentence report, with a focus on her mental health.

Defending Sandover last Wednesday, solicitor Mark O’Donnell said she had a “difficult upbringing”. He said she has a personality disorder with psychotic occurrences, and there had been some interruption to her medication regime.

Regarding the assault, for which another woman has also been convicted, he said that Sandover had been accused of shoplifting in Superdrug and two days later

the shop worker had “smirked” when she walked past Sandover in the street and a “scuffle ensued”.

Mr O’Donnell said that Sandover’s previous convictions included a suspended prison sentence in 2018 after she admitted a charge of wasting police time. Then in 2019 she had made “a big mistake” and had served time in prison.

He said she tended to commit offences with other people, rather than on her own, but has aspirations to go to college and is now “not associating with people who lead her down the wrong path in terms of offending”.

The magistrates read a statement from Nick Bishop from Bath Business Improvement District (BID), who manages the Safe and Secure Business Crime Reduction Partnership, outlining the impact on retailers from shoplifting.

Magistrates imposed a community order for 12 months, with a nine-month mental health treatment requirement and up to 20 rehabilitation activity requirement (RAR) days.

Sandover also received an immediate two-year criminal behaviour order (CBO) banning her from entering Superdrug, Primark, TK Maxx, Waitrose and

Claire's Accessories.

She must also not enter any other shop from which she has been banned, either verbally or in writing.

The order also prevents her from placing any items from any shop into to anything other than a provided shopping basket or trolley.

Sandover was also ordered to pay compensation £100 to her victim, fined £120 and must pay £85 costs to the Crown Prosecution Service.

117 drivers arrested Avon & Somerset Police arrested more than 117 people in the first two weeks of their festive drink and drug-driving campaign, which launched on 1st December.

That is an increase on the 111 arrests made during the same period last year.

The police say: “There is no safe way to drink and drive, there is no excuse to take the risk, and we continue to urge the public to help us take dangerous drivers off the road before it’s too late”.

Man admits damaging door after trying to get custody of cat A BATH man has admitted causing criminal damage to a door at his former partner’s home after going there while drunk to try to get custody of their cat.

Ian Baker’s address on the charge sheet was given as Chelsea House in Snow Hill, but he told Bath magistrates he was now living at Chelscombe in Weston.

The court heard that on 28th April he damaged a glass pane in the door belonging to Helen Clarkson.

A second charge that he caused her harassment, alarm or distress by using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour or disorderly

behaviour was withdrawn by the Crown Prosecution Service at the hearing on Wednesday 3rd December.

Representing Baker, solicitor Bradley Axam said that two other men had been there when he went to get the cat and they had got aggressive, pushing Baker and locking him out.

He had hit the door in frustration, but the damage had been “minimal”. He was sorry for his actions.

Mr Axam informed the court that Helen Clarkson died on 25th November and Baker “is grief stricken”.

He also said that the night before Baker’s court appearance, he had

been in A&E as he had been the victim of an assault which police were investigating.

Magistrates imposed a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered 52-year-old Baker to pay Crown Prosecution Service costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £26.

AVON & Somerset Police has launched an appeal for help to identify a man in connection with a racially-aggravated assault in the centre of Bath.

Officers are investigating the incident which took place just after 12pm on Saturday 27th September in Kingsmead Square car park.

The victim was assaulted by an unknown male and racially abused.

He did not require hospital treatment for his injuries.

Police believe the man pictured above, described as white, of 5ft 11ins tall, of average build, wearing a baseball cap and puffed coat, has information in relation to the incident which could aid their enquiries.

Jail sentence for drug and shoplifting offences A BATH man has been jailed for a year by magistrates for drug-dealing and a series of shoplifting offences, mainly at TX Maxx in the centre of the city.

William Delahunty, of Grosvenor Place at Lambridge, appeared in custody at Bath Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 3rd December.

A warrant without bail had been ordered by the court after he failed to attend a scheduled hearing on 17th November.

The most serious of the 12 charges – all of which the 34-year-old admitted – was that on 20th September at Islington in London, he was in possession of a quantity of the Class B drug MDMB-4en-PINACA, a synthetic cannabinoid, with intent to supply.

He was jailed for 12 months.

Magistrates ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the drug.

All the jail sentences that Delahunty received for the following crimes will run concurrently.

• The theft of two polo shirts, two baseball caps and two bumbags worth £129.96 from TK Maxx on 20th May (eight weeks).

• The theft of two bumbags, a handbag and a hairdryer worth £89.97 belonging to TK Maxx on 22nd May (eight weeks) • Stealing five T-shirts worth £199.95 from TK Maxx on 27th May (eight weeks).

• Shoplifting headphones and perfume totalling £43.97 from TK Maxx on 9th June (eight weeks).

• The theft of four handbags worth £239.96 from TK Maxx on 10th September (eight weeks).

• On 15th September failing to surrender to custody at Bath Magistrates’ Court, having been released on bail in criminal proceedings on 18th August (two weeks).

• Stealing two coats worth £279.98 from TK Maxx on 25th September (eight weeks).

• The theft on 1st November of six cashmere jumpers worth £750 belonging to Marks & Spencer in Stall Street in Bath (eight weeks).

• On 17th November failing to surrender to custody at Bath Magistrates’ Court having been released on bail in criminal proceedings on 7th October at Bristol Magistrates’ Court (two weeks).

• Stealing a coat worth £99.99 from TK Maxx on 18th November (eight weeks).

• Attempting to steal two raincoats worth £219.99 each belonging to Mountain Warehouse in Stall Street on 2nd December (eight weeks).

A further charge that on 1st November he had gone equipped for theft in Bath by having a pair of wire cutters with him was withdrawn by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Man admits biting the ear of pub worker

Thief tagged and ordered to pay trader £1,000 compensation

A 26-YEAR-OLD man has admitted assaulting a Bath pub worker after he bit his ear and punched him in the face.

Daniel Leak had refused to leave Flan O’Brien’s in Westgate Street when asked to do so, and became aggressive towards assistant manager Felix Marland, the court heard last Wednesday, 10th December.

Prosecutor Maree Doyle told

magistrates that Mr Marland feared his entire ear would be bitten off during the assault, which happened on 15th May. Magistrates ordered a presentence report about Leak from the Probation Service.

Leak, of Old Gloucester Road in Winterbourne, near Bristol, was granted unconditional bail until his sentencing which will be on 13th February.

E-bike present warning AFTER problems with nuisance e-bikes in the Peasedown St John area over the last 18 months, police are cautioning parents against buying them as Christmas presents.

They have received a number of complaints about the use of e-transport, with officers speaking to users to educate them, and if necessary, enforcing current legislation.

The use of mechanicallypropelled vehicles, such as e-scooters or e-bikes that do not require pedalling, is not permitted on the road or any public spaces, including footpaths and bridleways.

They are covered by the same laws and regulations that cover all vehicles. In October, police seized an electric motorcycle under Section 59 of the Police Reform 2002. This legislation allows any vehicle being used in an anti-social manner to be seized. Since then, the police have had no further reports of nuisance e-bikes in the area.

However, they say: “With Christmas approaching, we’d like to remind parents and guardians to consider the legal requirements before purchasing or allowing the use of such vehicles.

“Please ensure any vehicle you buy complies with the law.”

Bath Magistrates' Court

A MAN who stole items from a sole trader in Bath and damaged other goods belonging to her has been ordered to pay £1,000 compensation.

Karl Holmes, 47, appeared before Bath magistrates for sentencing on Wednesday 10th December.

He had admitted that on 10th May he stole candles and beauty products to the value of £2,656 from the Polly Dryden shop.

He also admitted causing £404 criminal damage to products.

Magistrates read a financial impact statement from businesswoman Rebecca Cooper, who runs Polly Dryden.

Holmes, who had nine previous convictions, defended himself in court and when asked if he wished to say anything, he stated: “I’m sorry about it.”

Magistrates imposed a 12-month community order. Holmes was given an immediate four-month curfew. An electronic tag will send a regular signal to a monitoring centre, confirming his presence at his home at Rogers Close, Clutton, between 6pm and 6am.

Holmes must also complete up to 20 rehabilitation activity requirement (RAR) days.

The magistrates made no order for costs or surcharge.

THIS week’s archive photograph is a snow-covered seasonal view of Widcombe old church, dedicated to St Thomas à Becket, whose feast day falls on 29th December.

It was taken in the late 19th century, long before there was any need for a war

memorial on the grassy plot to the left of the gate.

Comparing it with the view today, two other major differences can be seen.

The Victorians were obsessively keen on letting ivy and other creepers cover the walls of their buildings, heedless of the damage it did to the stonework.

Here vegetation not only trails luxuriantly from the wall but also hides most of the tower from view.

Such a sight would be unthinkable today – even so, if you were to stand on the spot from which the photographer took this shot, your view of the tower would be blocked by a large tree.

St Thomas’s was built in the 1490s on the site of a much earlier building.

At least 69 churches in England were dedicated to Thomas à Becket following his murder in Canterbury Cathedral on 29th December 1170 and subsequent

canonisation.

Despite alterations in 1746, and a thoroughgoing restoration by Major Davis in 1861, St Thomas’s Widcombe remains the oldest surviving church in Bath, and – even though generally referred to as Widcombe Old Church – an active place of worship.

Tasty Dates For Your Diary - A Look Back At 2025...

From restaurant news and tasty dates for your diary to big deals and recipes, we hope our Food & Drink column has given you plenty of food for thought in 2025. But before we look forward to 2026, we’re looking back on how (and when!) we got to where we’re at.

Back in March, the Beefy Boys’ boisterous burgers created a brouhaha in George Street. As the year rolled along, vibrant plant-based Indian oasis Sarthi lit up Walcot Street, Thailand Wok presented authentic, southeast Asian flavours to Moorland Road, Emberwood brought both live hearth drama and classic glamour to the Francis Hotel on Queen Square and The Welly (Green Street) gave the sports bar formerly known as Belushi’s a whole new, exciting lease of life.

Meanwhile, the shopping/ merrymaking zone formerly known as Milsom Place rerebranded as Shires Yard and introduced us to sleek modern pasta emporium Magari, the stunning, forward-thinking vegled oasis Root and the Electric Bear Brewing Co’s buzzing Cub taproom along the way.

But across Bath (and indeed, the rest of the UK), increasing overheads coupled with consumer cashflow caution combined to create an imperfect storm for the hospitality industry.

While we waved goodbye to a handful of much-loved old friends (Henry’s on Saville Row, the Bengal Brasserie on Milsom Street and Town+House on Thomas Street/London Road amongst them), diversification proved to be the key to survival.

Inspired breakfast offerings at both Bandook (Shires Yard) and Mantra (Bladud Buildings) and the prospect of Afternoon Tea at The Mint Room (Lower Bristol Road) turned our perception of ‘going out for a curry’ on its head, while a plethora of special menu events, wine tastings and more kept — and hopefully will continue to keep — bookings diaries buoyant at a host of restaurants, pubs and hotels.

Elsewhere — and not entirely unrelated to the previous paragraph — Bath’s pop-up phenomenon dominated social media feeds throughout 2025 as we scrabbled for limited tickets to experience exciting new chefs in fun, funky environments at accessible prices. As the trend is set to soar, keep an eye on the weekly schedule at pop-

up epicentre Picnic in the Park (Upper Bristol Road) and regular hot ticket news from the Village (Larkhall), the Rose and Crown (also Larkhall) and The Curfew (Cleveland Place), where Liam Goldstone’s regular Dinner With Goldstone supper clubs sell out before you can say ‘superchef!’.

Looking forward to 2026, there’s already some exciting news in the pipeline to whet our appetites.

Both the King William pub (Combe Down) and the Inn at Freshford have recently reopened under new ownerships, both fully refurbished for a brand new era. Local hospitality magnates the Walcot Group are busily refurbishing The White Hart in Widcombe in time for a summer 2026 unveiling, Joe and The Juice bring Danish specialities to Stall Street… and a brand new branch

of Wetherspoons (the Old Post Office, no less!) is preparing to open its doors on the George Street strip.

But while we’re busy celebrating the joys of the festive season 2025, please let’s not forget those who struggle to put even the simplest hot meal on the table. Connect Bath (https:// www.connect-bath.org/) aims to combat isolation over Christmas, you’ll find Food Bank collection points across Bath (https://bksv. foodbank.org.uk/give-help/ donate-food/) and FoodCycle Bath (https://foodcycle.org. uk/location/foodcycle-bath/) works hard throughout the year to tackle the big issues around food poverty, loneliness and food waste.

Salmon Coulibiac

A classic combination of salmon, prawns, spinach, rice, fresh herbs and puff pastry brought together in perfect, tasteful harmony - aka, your Christmas Eve supper sorted! Delicious served hot (with, perhaps, seasonal greens and Hollandaise Sauce?) or cold as part of a festive buffet, Coulibiac looks impressive but is surprisingly straightforward to make… especially when you use ready-made puff pastry.

Ingredients (serves 6)

For the filling: • 60g long grain rice • 1 egg, beaten • 180g small cooked prawns • 1 gherkin, finely-chopped • 1 tbsp fresh dill, finely chopped • 1 tbsp fresh flatleaf parsley, finely chopped • 1 tbsp fresh chives, snipped • 1 level tbsp fresh lemon juice For the Coulibiac: • 1 x 375g ready-made, all-butter puff pastry sheet • 50g baby spinach leaves • 400g centre-cut skinless salmon fillets • 1 egg, beaten (plus 1 more beaten egg for sealing/glazing)

Method

• To make the filling: cook the rice according to the instructions on the packet. Rinse in cold water, drain well and allow to cool. Mix the cooled rice with the beaten egg, cooked prawns, gherkin, dill, parsley, chives and lemon juice until well combined. Season to taste with salt and white pepper and set to one side.

• To assemble the Coulibiac: preheat the oven to 180°c/gas mark 4 and unroll the puff pastry sheet onto a greaseproof paper-lined baking sheet.

• Sprinkle half of the baby spinach leaves across the base of one half of the pastry sheet, leaving a 2cm gap around the edge. Place half of the salmon fillets on top of the spinach leaves, then spread with the filling mixture.

Place the remaining salmon fillets on top of the filling mixture to make a nicely tucked-in 'sandwich', then cover with the remaining spinach leaves.

• Brush the edges of the pastry with beaten egg and carefully cover the salmon filling with the clear half of the puff pastry sheet. Use the edges of your hands to create a snug fit, then seal the edges of the pastry parcel together with your fingers (or crimp with a fork) and trim off any excess.

• Using a sharp knife, cut 3-4 small holes in the top of the Coulibiac then brush all over with beaten egg. Transfer to the hot oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, reglazing with more beaten egg and giving the Coulibiac a 180° turn around halfway through the cooking time.

• If serving hot, allow the Coulibiac to ‘settle’ for 10 minutes before slicing.

Paul’s fruit rolls can be made ahead then heated up before adding a glossy glaze and citrus icing, making them the perfect morning treat for Christmas Day.

1. Put the flour and 1tsp salt into a large bowl. Make a well in the centre and add the yeast. Meanwhile, warm the milk and butter in a pan until the butter melts and the mixture is lukewarm. Add the milk mixture and egg to the flour mixture and stir until the contents come together as a soft dough (add extra flour if you need to).

Ingredients (makes 9)

• 500g strong white flour, plus extra for dusting • 7g sachet fast-action dried yeast • 300ml milk • 40g unsalted butter, softened at room temperature • 1 egg • Vegetable oil, for greasing For the filling • 25g unsalted butter, melted • 75g soft brown sugar • 2tsp ground cinnamon • 100g dried cranberries • 100g chopped dried apricot

2. Tip the dough onto a well-floured surface. Knead for 5 mins, adding more flour if necessary, until the dough is smooth, elastic and no longer sticky.

3. Lightly oil a bowl with the vegetable oil. Place the dough in the bowl and turn until covered in oil. Cover the bowl with cling film and set aside in a warm place for 1 hr or until doubled in size. Lightly grease a baking sheet and set aside.

4. For the filling, knock the dough back to its original size and turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll it into a 1cm-thick rectangle.

Brush all over with the melted butter, then sprinkle over the sugar, cinnamon and fruit.

5. Roll up the dough into a tight cylinder, cut into 9 x 4cm slices and position on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between. Cover with a tea towel and set aside to rise for 30 mins.

For the glaze • 50g caster sugar

6. Heat oven to 190°C/170°C fan/gas mark 5. Bake the buns for 20-25 mins or until risen and golden brown. Meanwhile, melt the glaze sugar with 4 tbsp water until syrupy.

For the lemon icing • Zest of a lemon • 200g icing sugar

7. Remove from oven and glaze. Set aside to cool on a wire rack. Once cool, mix the zest and icing sugar with about 2 tbsp water to drizzle over the buns. Serve.

Gordon Ramsay’s Cranberry Mince Pies A Christmas staple with a cranberry twist, how can you possibly avoid these magnificent mince pies?

Method

Ingredients (24 pies)

• 250g plain flour, plus extra to dust • 25g icing sugar • 125g chilled unsalted butter, diced finely • Grated zest of 1 orange • 1 medium egg, lightly beaten • 1–3 tsp ice-cold water (if needed)

1. Put the flour, icing sugar, butter and orange zest into a food processor and whiz to fine crumbs. Add the egg and whiz for a few seconds until the mixture forms clumps and you can press it together into a ball. If necessary, add a teaspoon or two of water to bring the mixture together.

2. Turn onto a very lightly floured surface and knead briefly until smooth. Wrap in cling film and chill for at least 30 minutes, or until firm.

3. For the filling, turn the mincemeat into a bowl and stir in the dried cranberries. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to the thickness of a £1 coin. Using an 8cm fluted cutter, cut out 24 rounds and use to line two 12-hole non-stick mince pie tins.

Filling: • 400g jar good-quality mincemeat • 150g dried cranberries

4. Re-roll the trimmings to the same thickness and stamp out 24 stars or Christmas trees, with an appropriate cutter, for the tops. Put a dessertspoonful (2 tsp) filling into each pastry case, then press the tops in position. Chill for at least 20 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180°C/Gas 4.

To finish: • 1 egg yolk, beaten with 1 tsp water (eggwash), to glaze • Icing sugar or caster sugar, to dust

5. Brush the tops with the eggwash, then bake the mince pies for 15–20 minutes until the pastry is golden and crisp. Let cool for a few minutes before removing from the tins and transferring to a wire rack to cool. Store an airtight container, warming slightly before serving with a dusting of sugar.

Ingredients (for 12)

4. Pour the egg and sugar mixture into the cooled chocolate mixture and, using a large metal spoon, fold together (working gently to retain the air in the whisked eggs) until the mixture is a mottled dark brown.

• 185g unsalted butter • 185g high-quality dark chocolate • 85g plain flour • 40g cocoa powder • 3 large eggs • 275g caster sugar • 6 mince pies

5. Sift in the cocoa and flour mixture and continue gently folding; the mixture will at first look dry and dusty before becoming fudgy and rich. Don't overmix! We want to retain that fudgy texture.

6. Spoon half the chocolate mixture into the prepared tin, then add the mince pies in broken-up chunks. Top with the remaining chocolate mixture, gently easing it between and over the mince pie chunks, and level the top.

1. Cut the butter into cubes, break the dark chocolate into chunks and place both ingredients in a heatproof bowl. Set the bowl over a pan of just simmering water (but do NOT let the bowl touch the water) and heat gently, stirring occasionally with a metal spoon, until the chocolate and butter have melted. Remove from the heat and set the mixture to one side to cool to room temperature.

7. Bake for 25-35 minutes, until the top has a shiny, papery crust, the sides are just beginning to come away from the tin and a knife inserted into the middle comes out slightly glossy.

Baileys and White Chocolate Bread and Butter Pudding (Serves 4, vegetarian) • Whisk 2 large eggs with 200ml full fat milk, 150ml double cream and 50ml Bailey's (or similar creamy liqueur of your choice).

Slice 4 croissants or 6 thickly-cut slices of brioche into large cubes and tip half of them, in a single layer, into a liberally-greased, suitably-sized oven-proof dish.

• Smatter the bread with around 75g white chocolate (cut into small chunks) and top with half the creamy egg custard. Top with the rest of the cubed bread, another 75g white chocolate chunks

and the remaining custard.

• Push the bread into the custard and refrigerate for a minimum of 30 minutes (or up to 6 hours) before sprinkling the top with soft brown sugar and baking for 25-30 minutes in a preheated (180c/gas mark 4) for 25-30 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the custard semi-set.

Serve warm, with double cream.

BATH’S big Christmas tradition is back – and this year the Theatre Royal is in full flight to Neverland, with a star-studded cast, spectacular staging and a homegrown panto legend at the helm.

The Further Adventures of Peter Pan: The Return of Captain Hook is showing until Sunday 11th January 2026, packing in audiences with gravity-defying flights, dazzling choreography and plenty of festive silliness for all ages.

Stage and screen star Tristan Gemmill leads the cast as the fearsome Captain Hook, swapping the cobbles of Coronation Street and the wards of Casualty for a pirate ship.

Tristan is best known as longsuffering Bistro owner Robert Preston in Coronation Street and Emergency Consultant Dr Adam Trueman in Casualty. His TV credits also include The Crown, London’s Burning, The Bill, Poirot, Atlantis, Death in Paradise and Call the Midwife, while on film he appears in The Jacket, Flying Blind, Gladiatress, The Gospel of John and The Adventurer: The Curse of The Midas Box. On stage he has played the title role in The Bodyguard in the West End, winning rave reviews opposite Beverley Knight and Alexandra Burke, with further roles in Rope, Dangerous Corner, Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell, A Streetcar Named Desire, Chimes At Midnight and Henry V. Bath favourite Jon Monie – who also writes this year’s pantomime – is back as the side-splitting Smee. Jon first appeared in Bath’s pantos in 1996 and this is now his 23rd Christmas season at the Theatre Royal, with more than 1,250 performances under his belt. Local audiences have seen him as Wishee Washee in Aladdin, Smee in earlier productions of Peter Pan, an

Ugly Sister in Cinderella, Simple Simon in Jack and the Beanstalk, Silly Billy/Lester the Jester in Sleeping Beauty, Idle Jack in Dick Whittington, Muddles in Snow White and Louis La Plonk in Beauty and The Beast, as well as Buttons in Cinderella.

As an awardwinning panto writer, his Beauty and The Beast script won Best Script at The Great British Pantomime Awards in 2019. His writing credits include Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and Cinderella for UK Productions, plus a raft of family titles for other companies, and lyrics for Menopause the Musical 2.

Nick Jr favourite Holly Atterton is sparkling on stage as Tinker Bell, reprising the role after performances in Mansfield and Bournemouth.

Known for her work with pop group Go! Go! Go! on Nickelodeon’s Nick Jr channel, Holly has achieved a Top 75 album, two West End runs, a UK tour and a sellout concert at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire. She brings her versatile vocals and experience from roles including Meat in We Will Rock You, Sophie in Mamma Mia and Columbia in The Rocky Horror Show.

Well known to Bath audiences, Sarah Jane Buckley returns to the Theatre Royal as Ethel Mermaid/ Mrs Darling, after delighting audiences as Fairy Snowfall in last season’s Sleeping Beauty.

She has previously appeared at the venue as Mrs Lyons in Blood Brothers and as Annie in Calendar Girls: The Musical, and is familiar on TV as Kathy Barnes in Channel 4’s Hollyoaks.

Marcus J Foreman is soaring across the stage as Peter Pan, returning to the role after two

pantomime seasons in Ilford and Weymouth. His theatre credits span London venues including the Union Theatre, Southwark Playhouse, Hackney Empire and Above the Stag, alongside workshops and concerts, and he continues to develop new writing projects.

Playing Emily Darling is Bobbie Chambers, fresh from appearing in The Baker’s Wife at the Menier Chocolate Factory. She has also appeared in Newsies at London’s Troubadour Theatre, Jack and the Beanstalk in Canterbury, South Pacific at Chichester Festival Theatre and Ordinary Days.

Adding to the chaos, comedy acrobats The Nitwits perform as Hook’s bumbling pirate crew, combining slapstick with stunts, while dancers from the Dorothy Coleborn School of Dance once again light up the Theatre Royal stage.

The production is directed

by Charlotte Peters, with choreography by Jon Reynolds and musical direction by Joshua Newport. It is produced by Martin Dodd for UK Productions, one of the UK’s leading producers of musical theatre and pantomime.

The company returns to Bath following last year’s acclaimed Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs, with The Further Adventures of Peter Pan marking its 28th pantomime at the Theatre Royal.

WRITTEN by and starring panto legend Jon Monie, the script for this year’s pantomime at the Theatre Royal fizzles with wonderful wordplay and enough innuendo to keep the adults entertained.

It is a highly technical show, which no doubt will smooth out, regardless, it does has something for everyone.

Monie leads the pack as the comic Smee, his instant rapport is second to none, and who doesn’t love the bench sketch?

Mixing the timelines, the plot allows us to fly to Neverland with Emily Darling (Bobby Chambers), the younger relative of the original Wendy.

Hook has managed to get back to land and is ready to take over Neverland. Peter Pan (Marcus J Foreman) is an irritating boy who seems to think he knows everything, but with Emily’s help, all is resolved.

The camaraderie in the cast is clear; the nitwits pirate crew (Mark Nixon, Jack Robbins and Sammi Roddi Morgan) ensure great acrobatics and sharp comic timing.

Sarah Jane Buckley has many opportunities to showcase her vocal talents and comedy in the roles of Mrs Darling and Ethel Mermaid.

Tristan Gemmill is a fine baddie as Hook, making great use of his numbers, including a reworking of “I’ll Be Back” from the eponymous Hamilton.

Holly Atterton is a sparkling, energetic, roller-skating Tinkerbell alongside the Baby Belles from the Dorothy Coleborn School of Dance, who are exceptional.

The ensemble are hardly offstage; Issie Davis, Robbie Fell, Elizabeth Lundy, Charley Vincent and Yvie Woods ensure their energy levels never falter despite an intensely busy show for all.

This pantomime has everything, including a fine band and enough references to TikTok, iPhone vocabulary and current trends to cater for all ages.

Community St John’s Foundation to invest £5m to support older residents ST JOHN’S Foundation is investing £5 million over the next three years to create and upgrade affordable housing for older people in Bath, as part of its long-standing mission to support adults in later life.

The charity plans to build up to 15 new almshouses and refurbish existing homes, providing safe, affordable accommodation for people aged 65 and over who are facing financial hardship.

Alongside a place to live, residents will benefit from being part of a supportive community.

Once the work is complete, St John’s will offer up to 109 almshouses, placing it among the top 2% of almshouse providers nationally.

The charity says the project highlights the crucial part organisations like St John’s can play in responding to the housing crisis.

Catharine Brown, Chief Executive

of St John’s Foundation, said: “This is one of the most important and exciting projects in our history.

“We know how much of a difference almshouses make – not just by providing affordable housing, but by creating a community of friendship and support that reduces loneliness and gives people a stronger sense of belonging and purpose.”

The investment comes as Bath & North East Somerset faces severe housing pressures.

House prices are more than 13 times the average salary, social housing is scarcer than the national average, and the number of households in temporary accommodation is at a 20-year high. The local population aged 65 and over is also expected to grow by 15% by 2028.

Bath MP Wera Hobhouse said St John’s has “always played a vital role in our city” and

welcomed the new plans, saying more almshouses would give older people “the security of an affordable home as well as the support of a strong community”.

Part of the £5 million will fund improvement works at St John’s Combe Park almshouses, modernising and future-proofing the properties so residents can enjoy warmer, more efficient and comfortable homes.

As part of the project, St John’s will also relocate its headquarters from Chapel Court to 1 Queen Square, another of its buildings.

The site will host the charity’s offices alongside clients of the House of St John’s, a co-working and events space run through its trading company, which will continue to offer “a unique place to connect, work and celebrate with purpose”.

Subject to planning approval, the new almshouses are expected to be completed by 2027.

SouthGate Bath helping to combat loneliness this Christmas NEARLY half of Bath residents say they feel lonely at Christmas, according to new research commissioned by SouthGate Bath in partnership with the Mental Health Foundation.

The survey found that 48% of people in Bath experience feelings of loneliness over the festive season, with almost a third (31%) expecting to feel lonelier this year than they did last Christmas.

More than a third (35%) of those questioned said they wouldn’t know where to turn for help if they were struggling with loneliness or isolation, and the same proportion said they would not feel comfortable opening up to someone they trust about how they feel.

The findings also highlight how loneliness is affecting younger people, with 34% of 18–24 year olds across the UK anticipating greater feelings of loneliness this year.

In response, SouthGate Bath has joined forces with Age UK Bath & North East Somerset and youth charity Off The Record to promote local support available to people of all ages.

Age UK B&NES works with older

residents to help them stay connected and independent, while Off The Record provides free, confidential emotional health and wellbeing support for young people, including counselling and services for care leavers.

SouthGate Bath will donate advertising space across its digital screens, Giving Box, social media and website to signpost both charities and encourage donations.

The shopping centre has also launched a Letters of Hope initiative, inviting shoppers to write uplifting Christmas cards that will be distributed by the charities to vulnerable members of the community. A donation point sits alongside the Letters of Hope postbox.

Guy Henderson, centre director for SouthGate Bath, said: “Christmas is a special time we associate with togetherness but the reality for some is a much lonelier picture.

“Through our research with the Mental Health Foundation we know that loneliness is affecting all generations, so this year, we wanted to do more to provide support and connection for all

ages.

“As well as raising awareness of the support Age UK B&NES and Off The Record can provide to people experiencing loneliness and social isolation, we’re excited to see our visitors get involved with our Christmas cards initiative and we of course hope to raise lots of much-needed donations to help these amazing organisations continue their important work.”

Alexa Knight, Director of Policy and Influence for the Mental Health Foundation, said: “We can all feel lonely at times, but when loneliness lasts for a long period, it can have a profound impact on our mental health.

“At Christmas, this can feel even harder because the portrayal of the season as full of joy and togetherness can deepen feelings of isolation if we are lonely.

“Working with SouthGate Bath allows us to shine a light on an issue that is often hidden, encourage open conversations, and connect people with the support and understanding they need this Christmas and beyond.

“It’s important to note that loneliness isn’t something individuals should have to fix

alone; we all have a role to play.

“Taking time to check in with people around us, offering a listening ear, or creating spaces where others feel welcome can make a real difference.”

The research also found that nearly a third (27%) of people feel social media makes them more lonely at Christmas, while financial pressures (41%), being far from family and friends (31%) and the recent loss of a loved one (26%) were key drivers of disconnection.

“Our volunteers tell us that befriending brings real joy,

purpose and laughter into their lives, and the older people they meet bring their own experiences, humour and stories in return.

“For those who may be feeling a bit disconnected or lonely over Christmas, this partnership with SouthGate Bath helps us shine a light on the power of community and encourages more people to get involved.”

Getting loved ones home for Christmas FAMILIES across Bath are being urged to play their part in easing pressure on local NHS services this Christmas by helping loved ones leave hospital as soon as they are well enough.

Health leaders say this year’s Christmas and New Year period is expected to be one of the busiest on record, with winter pressures made worse by current industrial action.

Hospitals in the region have plans in place to keep essential services running and minimise disruption, but senior doctors are asking families, friends and carers to support ward teams by helping relatives get home safely and promptly once they are ready for discharge.

Taking a more active role in the discharge process – for example by offering a lift home, collecting prescriptions or making sure a house is warm and stocked with basic medicines – can help free up beds more quickly for new patients who need emergency care.

Dr Kathryn Bateman, Chief Medical Officer at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Winter is always our busiest time of year, and right now local NHS services are under more pressure than usual.

“Flu cases are rising, and the

cold weather is affecting people’s physical and mental health, which means there are fewer hospital beds available in the region than usual.

“And with the festive season approaching, we want to make sure no one stays in hospital longer than they need to, and we’re asking families, friends and carers to get involved early by talking with staff about their loved one’s recovery at home, as well as their future care needs, as soon as they are admitted.

“Other small, but very important, ways in which people can help include collecting prescriptions when they’re ready, arranging transport home, making sure the house has a supply of essential medicines, being there when someone first arrives home, and checking in on them in the days after with either a phone call or a visit.”

People are also being reminded to use NHS services appropriately over the festive period and on days affected by industrial action, choosing the right level of care for their needs and managing minor illnesses at home where safe to do so.

Anyone unsure how to treat an illness or injury is advised to use NHS 111 online at www.111.nhs. uk, which operates 24/7.

Christmas has a funny way of creeping into the garden.

It starts with a string of subtle, seductive fairy lights over the porch and, before you know it, you’ve got a 12ft inflatable reindeer hanging from the rooftop!

Now, I’m all for a bit of sparkle, and if kids are present, there’s arguably no sight more exciting than gazing out on the garden on Christmas Eve with the expectancy that Santa and his reindeer will soon be laying tracks across the lawn (they can’t land on the roof because of that inflatable!).

However, where the outdoor festive feel is concerned, I think the garden deserves something subtle, classy, and in keeping with the season.

Last year, I took a wander down the path on Christmas

Eve and realised that the holly bush by the gate was doing all the work on its own. A few scarlet berries, glinting in the frost, looked more authentic than anything I could plug into a socket. It made me think: why not let the plants take centre-stage?

A sprig of rosemary tucked into a wreath gives a waft of scent every time you pass the door. Ivy trails, woven around lanterns, bring an old-fashioned charm. Even crab apples left on bare branches can look like baubles against a wintry backdrop.

The trick is to decorate by using what the garden is already offering.

One December, I trimmed a few twigs of dogwood and popped them in a jug on the windowsill.

The red stems against a backdrop of white fairy lights felt so simple, but visitors thought I’d been terribly clever.

Really, it was the dogwood doing all the heavy lifting.

Also, it doesn’t have to solely be about natural elements. Some old blocks of wood painted to look like presents can be a nice addition to a flowerbed.

Consider as well placing red candles in terracotta plant pots for a warm festive glow.

Ultimately though, this Christmas, instead of filling every corner with tinsel, I’ll let the garden do its quiet magic - a partnership of light, leaf, and a touch of imagination.

After all, even in midwinter, nature knows how to throw a party.

Health Improvements needed at councilrun dementia care centre

THE Care Quality Commission says that council-run Cleeve Court Community Resource Centre in Bath, which looks after older people with dementia, needs to make improvements.

At the time of Cleeve Court’s previous inspection in 2019, when it was managed by Sirona care and health, the facility was rated as Good.

Sirona gave 12 months’ notice that year to terminate its contract for residential and extra care services, which were then brought back in-house by Bath & North East Somerset Council.

Cleeve Court at Twerton provides care and health services, has 46 beds and offers a broad range of activities which aim to promote independence by developing and maintaining and enhancing people’s skills, interests and abilities.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) carried out its latest assessment between July and early October, saying it was a “responsive focused inspection to follow up concerns in safe and well-led plus checking on previous concerns”.

The inspectors’ report, published

at the end of November, has identified improvements are needed to governance systems and further work is needed to ensure care plans are consistent and that staff have the training and guidance required to deliver safe, high-quality care.

Last week, Councillor Alison Born, cabinet member for adult services, said: “I want to reassure our residents, families and staff that we are continuing to address the areas that require improvement as identified in the report.

“We value the positive feedback from residents and their families in the report and will continue to work closely with them and healthcare partners to ensure Cleeve Court provides safe, compassionate, and personcentred care. Our staff work hard and are committed to delivering the best care for our residents.”

Key findings show infection control and medicine management were effective, and the home environment was well-maintained, with systems in place to manage the environment safely.

However, the report found care

plans lacked sufficient detail for some clinical tasks, creating potential risks, and there were not always clear responsibilities, roles, or systems of accountability.

The inspectors’ report acknowledged “inclusive” leaders who demonstrated integrity, openness, and honesty throughout the inspection.

It added: “The provider fostered a positive culture where people felt they could speak up and be heard. Staff felt confident raising concerns, although there were occasional lapses in communication up the management chain.”

The report also said that diversity was valued.

People and relatives reported feeling safe and spoke positively about staff care and responsiveness.

The report highlighted: “People experienced a positive, learning culture that was compassionate.

For example, we observed warm, respectful interactions, with humour and appropriate touch throughout the inspection.

“Staff sat with people who did not speak to offer company and reassurance.”

THE Royal United Hospital in Bath has been asking people to wear face masks in its admission areas.

Hospital chiefs say there are high levels of flu and other respiratory illnesses in the local community, and many are needing care in hospital.

Writing on its Facebook page, the RUH requests that all staff, patients and visitors who are able to wear a face mask or face covering when in: • The Emergency Department (both children’s and adults’ areas).

• Medical Assessment Unit.

• Surgical Assessment Unit.

“Masks will be provided at the entrances to the hospital, to allow you to wear them in other areas if you wish to do so.

“You can also help stop illnesses from spreading by washing your hands regularly with warm water and soap or using hand sanitiser.

“If you have a loved one in hospital, we ask that you please stay home if you have signs of illness.

“If you experience diarrhoea or vomiting, please do not visit until 48 hours after your symptoms have gone.”

On Monday 8th December, the hospital also posted on social media that it was “really busy” and asked people to consider their healthcare options.

Various options include: • NHS 111 can help with urgent medical help, or if you’re not sure what to do – call 111 or visit https://111.nhs.uk/ • Pharmacists can offer clinical advice for a range of illnesses, such as coughs, colds, sore throats, ear infections, and aches and pains. Most pharmacies can also offer prescription medicine for some conditions.

• NHS.uk can provide self-care advice for issues such as grazes, sore throat, coughs and colds.

• Contact 999 in an emergency only.

All patients going to the hospital would be seen, “but it may take slightly longer than usual”, the RUH said.

Bath hospital’s energy efficiency project starts Becky Feather Reporter

PROJECT Clean Heat, the Royal United Hospital’s £21 million project to replace a number of gas boilers with more energyefficient equipment, such as air-and water-source heat pumps, is under way.

Until late January, essential building work on roads within the RUH site is being carried out as part of the decarbonisation project.

Electrical cables to power the new heating equipment are being laid under the car park and roads but this phase of the work does not result in the loss of any parking spaces.

The hospital is also undertaking a number of other improvements such as increasing the number of

solar panels on site.

Once complete in 2026, the project will see the RUH save 3,200 tonnes of carbon every year – the equivalent of more than 14,000 return journeys from Bath to Edinburgh in a typical petrol car.

The work is being funded by a £21 million government grant from the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero, administered by Salix.

The RUH says it is working closely with contractors to minimise disruption and will continue to do so throughout the works.

“We appreciate that parking at the RUH can present a challenge during what can be an anxious time. We would encourage anyone with a particular concern to please get in touch, so we can review this in more detail.”

PLANS to bring two new specialist schools to the former Culverhay School site in Bath are set to move forward after long-awaited government funding was confirmed.

A national capital programme worth at least £3 billion over the next four years will create an estimated 50,000 new places for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in schools across England.

Bath & North East Somerset Council has confirmed that the package includes money for Green Ways Academy, a new special school, and Sulis Academy, an alternative provision school, both earmarked for the Culverhay site.

Between them, the schools are expected to offer 120 SEND places and 55 alternative provision places for children and young people in Bath and North East Somerset.

The project had been paused for around 18 months while the government completed a spending review.

Speaking at a B&NES Council committee, Councillor Manda Rigby, cabinet member for communications and community, said: “This announcement strengthens our plans for two new free schools: Green Ways Academy (special school) and Sulis Academy (alternative provision), both due to be delivered on the Culverhay site in Bath.

“These schools will provide much-needed specialist places for children and young people, reducing the need for families to travel out of area for appropriate provision.

“This will also help manage council finances by lowering transport costs and improving sustainability.

“We very much look forward to

improving the provision in our community.”

She added: “This is money that definitely will unlock the possibilities of us being able to do what we have committed to do on the Culverhay site.”

Liberal Democrats locally have been pressing for the release of the funds.

Last week, Bath’s MP Wera Hobhouse challenged the Prime Minister in the House of Commons over how long families would be left waiting for a new special school.

Reacting to the confirmation that funding is now in place, Wera Hobhouse said: “I’m very pleased that the Government has now decided to release funding for this much-needed new special school.

“Families in Bath have been waiting years for this, and the delay meant children were forced to travel further and wait longer for the support they deserve.

“I’m glad that the pressure we have applied has helped to bring about this decision. Just last week the Prime Minister told me he was determined to fix a SEND system that fails parents and fails children.

“This announcement is a step in the right direction and a welcome win for families in Bath.

“However, there is still much more to do. I will be scrutinising the Government’s long-anticipated and delayed SEND White Paper closely to see whether it delivers the real reforms needed to fix a broken system and ensure vulnerable children are properly supported.”

Odd Down ward councillor Steve Hedges said the news marks an important milestone for the community.

He said: “Culverhay is very close to the community’s hearts and we are delighted that this brings

us a step closer to bringing the site back into use for education.

“Local residents and councillors have been campaigning for this.

The new schools will help reduce the long journeys many children have to take to access specialist education.”

Councillor Paul May, cabinet member for children’s services, highlighted the administration’s previous pledge over the site. He said: “The Liberal Democrat administration gave a commitment to keep an education presence on the Culverhay site, after the closure of Bath Community Academy a few years ago.

“We have been working hard to lobby the government to fund the new schools, as some of our most vulnerable children have had the challenge of travelling out of B&NES for education.

“We are proud we have been listened to and will be treating this as a priority.”

In a statement, Bath & North East Somerset Council welcomed the government’s investment, saying it would help more children “learn and thrive closer to home”.

The council said it is confident the announcement allows it to proceed with Green Ways Academy and Sulis Academy on the Culverhay site, easing pressure on families who currently travel out of area and helping reduce transport costs.

The extra funding will also enable the authority to look at expanding SEND provision within existing schools or creating new resource bases.

The council said it remains committed to working with partners and trusts “to ensure the best outcomes for children and young people with SEND”, and thanked the Department for Education for its continued support.

BATH & North East Somerset Council is spending more than £10 million a year on home-to-school transport as it drives children with special educational needs to schools as far away as, in one case, northern Oxfordshire.

Councils have a statutory responsibility to provide transport for some children, such as those who live far from school or have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), which means they cannot walk to school.

But a lack of SEND spaces at schools in Bath and North East Somerset means the council is having to use taxis to drive children to schools across Somerset, Bristol, Wiltshire, and even further afield.

As of last year, of the almost 2,700 children who qualify for hometo-school transport in Bath and North East Somerset, just over 700 attended SEND schools — but it costs five times more on average to get them to school than it costs to provide home-toschool transport for children in mainstream provision.

The cost of taking a single child with special educational needs or disabilities to school and back in a taxi ranged from between £87.50 to £283.25 a day.

The council’s spending on hometo-school transport has doubled in six years from £5.4 million in 2018/19 to £10.8 million in 2024/25. This year’s budget for home-to-school transport has increased to £11.4 million.

Lucy Hodge, the council’s cabinet member for sustainable transport delivery, told a council scrutiny panel on 25th November: “We are not alone in this challenging environment and in many ways are performing well.”

She said: “Whilst the numbers of children attending mainstream schools remain relatively constant, it is those with EHCPs (education, health, and care plans) which have increased

dramatically, consistent with the national trend.

“About 50% of children with EHCPs then require home-toschool transport. The problem for B&NES is that our local SEND provision is full.”

The council is planning to build a new 120-space special school along with a 55-place alternative provision school on the Culverhay site in Bath, which will mean more children with special educational needs and disabilities can attend school in the area. But the scheme has been stuck waiting for government approval.

A lack of nearby provision is not the only reason children may attend schools further away.

Special educational needs and disabilities can be varied and complicated.

Councillor Hodge told the meeting: “It’s not straightforward and finding the schools that have the best provision is what the service is aimed at, and that’s why we have such a wide scatter.”

Part of the reason for the high cost for SEND home-to-school transport is that the need to take individual children to different, far-apart locations usually requires using taxis, which the council only uses as a “last resort.”

The unattractive contracts for driving long distances only at school pick-up time have led, in some cases, to the council only receiving a single bid for a hometo-school transport contract, further increasing the cost.

This year, for the first time, the council has begun employing drivers and buying its own cars to make the journeys instead of taxis.

Head of highways, parking and passenger transport Paul Garrod said: “We are being quite frugal.

We are not buying brand new vehicles. We are using secondhand cars. Obviously they are of a good standard but we are being careful with the money.”

Mr Garrod said: “What would make the big difference though, is if we could have more special educational needs provision within the district or close to it.”

Business FirstGroup completes acquisition of Plans to rent out Bath sightseeing bus operation accommodation to tourists each summer FIRSTGROUP PLC has completed the acquisition of RATP Dev’s sightseeing bus operations in London and Bath, in a deal that further strengthens the group’s presence in the South West and the capital.

The services currently operate under the Tootbus brand and are primarily focused on sightseeing.

They include a fleet of 63 buses in total, 42 in London and 21 in Bath, and employ around 190 people.

The acquisition also covers the Air Decker service, which provides a link between Bath and Bristol Airport.

As part of the deal, FirstGroup will take on a large freehold depot in Wandsworth, southwest London, as well as a leased depot in Keynsham, near Bath.

The move follows FirstGroup’s purchase earlier this year of RATP Dev’s London bus operations, which now run under the First Bus London name.

A RETROSPECTIVE planning application has been submitted to Bath & North East Somerset Council for the commercial kitchen which supplies a city centre pub.

The application has been lodged this month by Raven Kitchen Ltd, which does the catering for Queen Street pub The Raven of Bath.

In 2023 a storage barn at Marksbury, near Bath, was converted into the pub’s commercial kitchen and food preparation area.

It is in a complex of farm units at Beech Tree Farm in Priston Lane.

Planning consultants for Raven Kitchen Ltd say the barn remains “almost exactly” as it was before the conversion: “There is very little difference to the external elevations and appearance to the building with the exception of a number of additions in terms of extraction vents, hoods, drainage

pipes and gas bottles which are predominantly located to the rear of the building.”

They say: “The proposed change of use provides the landowner at Beech Tree Farm a valuable source of alternative income to support his farming business and enterprise.

“The commercial kitchen provides a source of employment for the local population as well as helping to support a wellestablished and long-term business located in central Bath.”

PLANS have been unveiled to rent out part of a Bath student accommodation block to tourists over the summer months.

Bath & North East Somerset Council has received a change of use application from Roost Propco 1 Limited for The Depot at Brougham Hayes.

Permission was granted 10 years ago to demolish an old transport depot on the site and build a block for 104 students, including communal facilities.

Now there are plans to house both students and non-students in the months of June, July and August.

A letter with the application says that a significant portion of students leave the accommodation at the end of the academic year after exams and final assessments end in May, resulting in a significant portion of the site being vacant over the summer period.

Redevelopment at equestrian centre Magistrates issue warrant over firm’s debt approved despite concerns Becky Feather Reporter

PLANS to redevelop part of Wellow Trekking Centre near Bath for housing have been approved despite concerns, including that the scheme will “remove any chance” of the Two Tunnels Greenway being extended south.

The proposals will see three detached houses and a new access built following the demolition of the indoor riding arena, existing house, stable and storage buildings at Little Horse Croft Farm at Ford Road.

Riding for the Disabled Association will continue to use the site and the café, which will be improved, as will the toilets.

There will be extra parking to the south of the site for the trekking centre and a new footpath link to existing paths to increase connectivity to Wellow and the surrounding area. A new pavement under the viaduct will also be installed.

The site is within the Green Belt and Cotswolds National Landscape but reuses previously developed land.

Bath & North East Somerset Council received more than 20 comments of support as well as four objections highlighting concerns about road safety, that the outdoor arena is not suitable for all weathers, and that the proposed footpath is impractical.

Councillor Fiona Gourley (Bathavon South, Liberal Democrat) said the equestrian centre is based on the track of the Somerset & Dorset Railway, which then becomes the Two Tunnels cycle route.

She said: “There have been various temporary buildings on the site since it was sold off in the 1960s. However, it seems that this application would make more

permanent structures.

“As we look for more ways to encourage active travel, we should protect the historic route of the railway, not encourage further development.”

The group Transition Bath supported the scheme for its green credentials but highlighted: “This application does however remove any chance that the Two Tunnels Greenway could be extended through the railway’s original route to the south of the main street in Wellow.

“Currently with some compulsory purchase the route could be extended through Wellow, reducing the need to drop down and up a steep hill and along the busy village main street for cyclists and pedestrians.”

The planning application was referred to the chair of the planning committee, who concluded that the decision could be delegated to officers.

In their report, the officers said that use of the trekking centre has been in decline.

They gave significant weight to the contribution to the housing supply within the district.

The new houses – one with three bedrooms and the other two with four – are intended to be ‘barn like’ in appearance. Office space is proposed in each for home working to contribute to reduced car dependency. There will also be cycle parking provided for every house and EV charging points.

The officers also welcomed improvements to the café regarding accessibility for disabled users. They said whilst there would be a loss of the indoor arena, provision would still be made for continued use by community groups.

They said that highway safety would be improved with a pavement under the viaduct to slow traffic on Ford Road and improve pedestrian safety, and that the car park proposed to the south of Ford Road would remove the parking along the layby, improving visibility and safety.

However, they acknowledged there would be some “shortcomings”: “The site is located outside of the housing development boundary, along the Ford Road to the east of Wellow. Ford Road does not benefit from pavement use across its entire stretch.

“The section of road which runs under the viaduct to the west of the site is also a tight bend where visibility is poor. The use of the route from the site access into Wellow is therefore considered not likely to be preferable especially during poor weather or at night.

“As such, whilst it is a feasible route for pedestrians, it is considered not to be optimal and safe at all times.”

The officers also said although the proposed footpath link may not be used for typical day-to-day journeys such as to the school, it is an improvement to existing links from the trekking centre site and café into Wellow.

The officers’ report noted the concerns raised that the development would restrict the future of re-establishing the Somerset & Dorset Railway but said the former route is “not safeguarded by current planning policy”.

BATH magistrates have issued a warrant of control after a local company failed to pay a fine and other court-imposed charges.

In October Bath Cleaning Services Ltd was fined £1,000

by Bristol magistrates for not identifying the driver of a vehicle.

The firm was also ordered to pay a £400 surcharge and £120 costs.

On Monday 15th December Bath Magistrates’ Court heard that there had been no communication from the company and no plea had been entered at the hearing in October. A search of Companies

House records had revealed an active proposal to strike off the company.

A warrant of control authorises enforcement agents to take the necessary steps to recover financial impositions imposed by the court. It can include taking control of possessions.

Bath Cleaning Services Ltd is registered at Portland Place in Bath. According to Companies House the business was incorporated on 3rd January 2018. There were initially three directors but there is now just one.

Vacant city centre offices to be converted THERE are plans to convert three floors of vacant offices in a Georgian townhouse into holiday accommodation.

Six bedrooms, each with ensuites, are planned over the first, second and third floors of Grade II* listed 6 North Parade which is on the corner of Pierrepont Street in the city centre. The ground-floor retail unit will be retained.

Brahamos Limited has applied to Bath & North East Somerset Council to change the use and for listed building consent for the property, which dates from 1740 and is accredited to John Wood the Elder, forming part of his uncompleted scheme for Abbey Orchard.

A marketing statement notes that current market conditions in Bath no longer support demand for this type of office accommodation, and it is not viable to refurbish or re-let the offices, which have been empty for more than two years.

by Bath & North East Somerset Council, Michael Newby-Vincent was given three months to cease the unauthorised use of ninebed Dorset Villa at 14 Newbridge Road.

It has been a popular venue for hen parties of up to 24 people.

THE latest attempt to redevelop the former garden centre at Stockwood Hill on the edge of Keynsham has been unveiled.

Outline planning permission is being sought by Whitegate Bristol Ltd to demolish buildings at the Whitegate Nurseries site and erect three buildings containing 15 industrial units (Class B2, general industrial).

The application submitted to Bath & North East Somerset Council says the proposals are an opportunity to provide new employment opportunities through the redevelopment of a brownfield site.

The nurseries on Stockwood Hill closed in 2018 after trading for 64 years, with the owner blaming crippling business rates and competition from big retailers.

A proposal was then lodged to turn five of the buildings into six homes. But refusing that scheme in 2022, the council said it would involve the substantial reconstruction of buildings “tantamount to the construction of new houses within the open countryside”.

The council also said that Stockwood Hill is not safe for cyclists or pedestrians and there were concerns about biodiversity and the impact on important trees and bats.

The developer went to appeal in 2023 and a planning inspector upheld the council’s decision.

Politics Bath councillor brands ‘mansion tax’ as ‘unfair’ John Wimperis

THE Labour government’s plans to introduce a ‘mansion tax’ on homes over £2 million have been branded “completely unfair” by the Bath councillor who could have to deal with collecting it.

Owners of properties worth over £2 million could soon have to pay between £2,500 and £7,500 a year as a “high value council tax surcharge,” under the government’s plans.

The sum, which for some Bath homes would be more than they currently pay in council tax, would be collected alongside council tax but would go straight to the government, not local council coffers.

Councillor Mark Elliott (Lansdown, Liberal Democrat), as Bath & North East Somerset Council’s cabinet member for resources, holds the role of dealing with its finances and council tax setting.

He told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): “It’s unclear exactly what the socalled ‘mansion tax’ will really mean for B&NES residents.

awaiting details from the government. So far, this looks less like a council tax increase and more like a workaround to boost central government income while sticking to the letter (if not the spirit) of Labour’s tax pledges.

“The proposal may see owners — not residents — of houses with a recalculated value of over £2m paying an additional sum.

“This would then be diverted off to plug holes in central government’s national spending commitments.

This seems completely unfair. Local council tax payers quite rightly expect their council tax to go to their council to fund essential local council services. That’s highways

and bin collections, as well as vital social care services, on which so many vulnerable people rely.

“Most people agree council tax needs to be reformed, and I would welcome a genuine move to do that. This is not a council tax reform.

“It’s not really council tax at all. It is a sticking plaster for tax promises the government made without a proper plan.”

There have long been calls to reform council tax, which is calculated on 1991 property values and, unlike income tax, is not based on people’s ability to pay.

But it remains a hugely important way for councils

to generate income in a time when government funding has reduced.

In recent years, Bath & North East Somerset Council has increased its council tax by the maximum 4.99% permitted without a local referendum, as, like other councils, it faces a “significant and unpredictable” bill for social care.

A Band H home in Bath currently pays £4,429.08 a year in council tax once all precepts are applied.

The government expects that less than 1% of homes across England will have to pay the new mansion tax.

In Bath, the city’s Georgian townhouses can often fetch more than £2 million. One home on the iconic Circus is currently on the market for £3.9 million.

Unlike council tax, however, it is property owners, not their residents, who will have to pay the high-value council tax surcharge.

The tax is expected to bring in £430 million for the government each year.

The government will compensate local authorities for the cost of collecting the tax. The government plans to introduce the tax in April 2028, with a public consultation on the details to be held next year.

Planning Round-up Second unit planned at Walcot filling station There are plans to build an additional retail unit at Walcot Service Station on London Road in Bath.

The Esso branded station already has a forecourt shop with the proposed singlestorey development aiming to strengthen the existing commercial use at the site, says applicant Rontec Service Stations 1A Limited.

The exact occupier of the proposed unit is not yet confirmed but it would be for the sale of food and drink for consumption, mostly on the premises.

The proposed development would be within an underutilised part of the site, says the application which has been submitted to Bath & North East Somerset Council.

It is planned in an area which currently provides three car parking bays; they would be lost but the proposed development would see an accessible parking bay created in front of the existing shop.

Hub blocked over anti-social behaviour and drug concerns PLANS by BT to install a Street Hub on the pavement in Keynsham town centre have been refused, with police raising concerns about it becoming a magnet for antisocial behaviour (ASB) and drug-dealing.

Bath & North East Somerset Council had flagged up several concerns during a formal preapplication consultation for the proposed installation on the High Street which BT wanted to put right between Poundland and Peacocks.

BT Street Hubs offer free public wi-fi, free UK calls, USB charging, an emergency services button and a range of other digital services. They aim to replace phone kiosks. BT said the High Street location was a more suitable site than the phone box kiosk near Tesco at Bristol Road which is to be removed.

The application said that the width of the pavement at this location is 4.3 metres and the proposed Street Hub would be 1.236 metres wide and 350mm deep.

Street Hubs are monitored remotely 24/7 and physically inspected at least every two weeks. BT had included a Street Hub anti-social behaviour management plan with the application. But Jason Price, a designing out crime officer who covers the B&NES area

for Avon and Somerset Police, had reservations and consulted Sergeant Rob Turner from the local policing team for his views.

Sgt Turner said: “Poundland suffers the most ASB and theft in Keynsham, due to its location being on the main thoroughfare for both senior schools in Keynsham.”

He added: “Due to the suggested location, this would cause groups, predominantly young persons, to gather in an area that already suffers issues with ASB and theft and, from over 22 years of policing experience, exacerbate them. I do not believe this is a viable option and would cause a strain on policing in the area.”

Mr Price highlighted the High Street crime figures over the past 12 months – which included 56 incidents of ASB, 69 thefts, 40 of violence, 23 public order offences, five robberies, three of arson/criminal damage, five burglaries, five sexual and five vehicle offences.

He added: “The intention of the BT Street Hub device is to encourage the public to use generally high value mobile devices out in the public realm.

“Good crime reduction advice does recommend that to protect yourself from street robbery you should keep your mobile phone and other valuables out of sight.

“The site will also allow a potential offender to reasonably justify a reason for being in the vicinity, claiming that they are using the wi-fi facility.”

He acknowledged that BT had said features would be in place to mitigate misuse but “we would not want to be experiencing this in the first instance”.

He highlighted a point made by a design-out-crime officer in Tower Hamlets: “Our local CCTV operatives at Tower Hamlets have images showing groups of drug users forming an orderly queue to use the phone on these booths to order drugs using the free 30-second call that is provided.”

Mr Price said the pavement is a main thoroughfare which

has already been narrowed outside Peacocks by a litter bin, electronic control equipment cabinet, and railings: “This would be narrowed further, creating an extended pinch point by groups gathering, potentially leading to conflict.”

He also warned about the glare from such units which can create problems for CCTV cameras, leading to footage being of such poor quality that it has no evidential value.

There were 27 objections from the public to the hub and Keynsham Town Council said it would be “an excessively large” sign in an already congested and cluttered section of the High Street and would harm the character of the historic market town.

B&NES councillor for Keynsham South Alan Hale (Independent) said: “This location is within the Keynsham Conservation Area and would significantly detract from the street scene as well as being intrusive to the free movement of pedestrians and disability scooters.

“The offer of free wi-fi merely replicates what most of the coffee shops offer already. There is no proven need or demand for such a creation.

“There is also a potential road safety issue with pedestrians being likely to step off of the kerb to negotiate it at busy times and step into or trip into the cycle lane where moving cycles can be encountered. I object.”

Councillor Alex Beaumont (Keynsham North, Liberal Democrat) also said it would not fit with the character of the High Street.

In refusing the proposal and the separate advertisement consent application, B&NES Council planners said the design, siting, scale and illumination would be harmful to the character and appearance of the street and compromise public safety and security.

The position, height, scale, illumination and appearance would harm the setting of nearby Grade II listed buildings, and the character and appearance of the conservation area, they added.

Avon Pension Fund to continue with arms investments John Wimperis

A MAJOR pension fund has voted to continue to invest in the arms industry as only 42% of its members wanted it to stop.

The Avon Pension Fund - which has 135,000 members in mainly public sector jobs across the former county of Avon - was the first in the country to survey its members on divesting from the aerospace and defence sector.

The fund has been under pressure to divest from companies involved in the arms trade after some members warned their pensions were being used to “fund human rights abuses by Israeli forces in Palestine”.

As the Avon Pension Fund committee met on 12th December in Bath’s Guildhall to vote on the issue, members of the public attached images of children killed and suffering in Gaza to empty seats in the council chamber as they urged the committee to vote to divest.

But councillors said it could be unlawful to do so because there was not enough support from the people whose pensions are in the fund.

The £6 billion pension fund has £18 million invested in 20 companies in the aerospace and defence sector, including some companies that sell weapons to Israel but excluding those which produce “controversial” weapons such as cluster bombs and antipersonnel mines.

The committee’s legal advice said that to make an investment decision for non-financial reasons, it needed to be satisfied of two things: that it would cause no “significant financial risk and financial detriment” and that there was good reason to believe that the scheme members would support the decision. Councillors were told their decision would be “unlawful” if both conditions were not satisfied.

Divesting was estimated to cost just under £1 million in additional administration costs on top of the current £30 million annual cost of the fund.

Although several councillors said this additional cost would not be a “significant” detriment, most councillors agreed there was not enough support among the scheme’s members to legally defend divesting.

A survey carried out in September had found that 74% of the fund were concerned that the products made by these companies may be used to harm civilians. However, only 42% supported divesting, while a slightly higher 47% supported continuing to invest in the sector. 11% were unsure.

Committee member Fi Hance, Green councillor for Redland on Bristol City Council, told the meeting: “I am probably not alone in the room in being deeply disappointed in the result of the survey — but to disregard it simply because I don’t like the outcome, I don’t think is right.

To be clear, I personally do not support investment in the arms industry.

But she added: “I don’t believe the role of a politician is to set aside the law when it suits them because they don’t agree with the outcome.”

John Leach, Liberal Democrat councillor for Walcot on Bath & North East Somerset Council, however, said he did not have confidence in the survey and would vote to divest.

He said: “I don’t think it was

unbiased.”

The committee also heard from five public speakers, including members of the fund, who all urged it to divest.

One speaker told the committee: “At most the results show a membership which is divided, uncertain, and increasingly conscious of ethical implications of defence sector investments.

“The 42% figure is too substantial to dismiss, especially when this group includes a clear majority of women and members under 45.

You cannot reasonably conclude that members support the status quo.”

Another speaker held up two images of a young girl in his family who had been killed.

One photograph showed her smiling at the camera. The second showed her body wrapped in white fabric.

Urging the committee to divest, he said: “Because something is legal or unlegal, doesn’t make it ethical.”

The committee voted 8-2 to continue investing in the aerospace and defence sector, but added a clause to note the strength of views expressed by members of the fund and communicate them to Local Pension Partnership Investments (LPPI) to inform the fund’s investment policies.

Vice chair of the committee George Leach (Liberal Democrat councillor for Keynsham North on Bath & North East Somerset Council) joined Councillor John Leach, who is no relation, in voting against. The two Green councillors on the committee, who were among those that voted to continue investment, said in a statement that they were “bitterly disappointed” by the result of the member survey, but that it was not in the gift of the committee to overrule it.

Joanna Wright, who represents Lambridge on Bath & North East Somerset Council and had called for the clause noting members' views to be added, said: “With a heavy heart, whilst we do not personally believe that investment in the arms trade is ethically or environmentally justifiable, we have to accept that the survey did not meet the legal threshold to change the funds investment policy.”

Councillor Hance added: “We have been contacted by a great many scheme members who are horrified that their pensions are being invested in the aerospace and defence industry.

“We are dismayed that we have been unable to secure the change we all had hoped for but would like to thank campaigners for their

hard work and their dignified and moving contribution to this debate.”

Chair of the Avon Pension Fund committee, Toby Simon, said in a statement after the meeting: “Committee members recognised that this is a difficult and sensitive issue, which is why the committee sought member views through a survey, sought further legal advice, and has taken its time to reach a decision.

Committee members showed their empathy with the many different and sometimes stronglyheld views of stakeholders.

“The committee has met and decided its approach, which is to remain invested in the aerospace and defence sector. We recognise that some stakeholders will be disappointed with this decision, but the committee believes it is the right decision given the further work undertaken.

“We note the strength of stakeholder views and agree to communicate them to our new investment pool, Local Pension Partnership Investments, which we will join in April, to inform their investment policies.”

Mr Simon, who is a Liberal Democrat councillor for Bathwick on Bath & North East Somerset Council, added: “The fund takes all member views seriously and, in reaching a decision, the committee has balanced those views with its wider fiduciary duty, legal advice, financial considerations, and the wider regulatory context with the evolution of pooling.

“The committee is grateful for the time taken by members to respond to the survey and for wider input received from stakeholders.”

20,000 randomly selected members of the fund were contacted by email to take part in the survey, with a response rate of 9.5% — which is double the expected response rate for similar surveys. The survey’s responses were then precision weighted according to the demographics of the fund’s membership. The survey was designed to produce a “statistically robust sample” even with a lower response rate.

Binns is shootout star again as Bath Larks net at death to see off Dorking in FA Trophy snatch draw with Mitres Richard Briggs Reporter

CHARLIE Binns was Bath City’s penalty-shootout hero for the second time in two Isuzu FA Trophy matches, this time starring as the Romans overcame Dorking Wanderers in the third round on Saturday 13th December.

Binns saved a spot-kick when City got the better of Bracknell Town on penalties in the second round on Saturday 15th November.

And at Meadowbank Stadium he saved two – effectively three, as one was retaken and stopped both times – to earn Darren Way’s side a tremendous 4-2 victory in the shootout after the sides played out a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.

It was certainly a great way for Binns to bounce back after being sent off at Maidstone United in Enterprise National League South on Saturday 6th December, a dismissal that was rescinded after Bath appealed to The Football Association.

Success at Meadowbank gave City revenge for their league defeat by Dorking at the Cannon Clarke Stadium @ Twerton Park in August.

And Bath’s prize for their victory in Surrey is a home tie against National League heavyweights Southend United in the fourth round – the last 32 – on Saturday 10th January. The Essex side dropped out of the Football League in 2021, having had two spells in the second tier.

City boss Way said after the win over Dorking: “I thought it was a good game from our point of view.

“From start to finish we created a number of chances, good chances, so to actually come away to Dorking and perform like we did and create the chances that we have, the facts are we won the game and we’re through to the next round.

“The biggest thing that I mentioned to the players [at

half-time] is our front three have got to believe a little bit more because we got into some really good areas where we could attack them.

“I knew Charlie was very, very good at [facing] penalties, he did really well. And all the penalty takers were as cool as ice and made good clean contact and made it look easy. “It’s not an easy decision whether you’ve got to play Harvey [Wiles-Richards] or Charlie [in goal] but in terms of FA Trophy-wise, Charlie’s done remarkably well.

“He played a massive part in the game before, which wasn’t easy, in the previous round but he just makes you feel pretty calm, and that’s a nice feeling when the goalkeeper allows you to feel calm, the team-mates to feel calm under pressure.

“I’m really pleased for him because this time last Saturday he was being marched to the stands for no fault of his own.”

Of Jordan Alves’ long-range equaliser that forced the shootout, Way said: “I think he believes in himself. Last season he was that maverick, created a lot of moments of individual brilliance. So it was nice for him to do that today.

“When the game’s like it is at these sort of places, it takes an individual to show a bit of brilliance and it was certainly that.”

Way showered praise on the referee, describing the official as “fantastic”. And he praised the Romans’ fans.

“That today was about ‘we’ in terms of all of us at this football club who work really hard,” said Way. “The supporters, the directors, the staff, the players, every single one of them deserved that result today, and it’s a nice feeling for those supporters who pay their hard-earned money week in, week out – it’s a huge commitment to support Bath City.”

Casey – who joined Dorking from Charlton Athletic earlier in the week – controlled the ball with his chest and slotted it past Binns.

Brad Ash slammed a shot against the Dorking bar in the 48th minute. But seconds later, Alves rifled in a free-kick from 25 yards – Ash having been fouled – to level the tie.

City had the better of the second period but could not find another way through, so the game went to penalties.

Casey struck to put Dorking 1-0 up but Alves equalised. George Francomb restored the hosts’ advantage, only for Joe Raynes to peg them back to 2-2.

Then Binns saved from Charlie Carter and Danny Greenslade buried Bath’s third kick.

Next, Binns denied James McShane – but the referee ordered that the penalty be retaken as the young gloveman had moved from his line too soon.

Again Binns thwarted McShane, meaning if Owen Windsor was successful with City’s next kick, Way’s team would win. Windsor made no mistake.

Binns was shown the red card in the 54th minute at Maidstone, the game ending 2-0 to the Kent side.

But City appealed to The FA – and on Thursday 11th December, a regulatory commission meeting ruled that the sending-off was a case of wrongful dismissal, meaning Binns will not have to serve a one-match ban.

On Monday 15th December, the Romans announced that Binns had signed a contract with the club.

Bath will entertain Salisbury in the league on Saturday 20th December (3pm).

LARKHALL Athletic struck at the death to snatch a draw from a goal fest at the Camella Stadium on Saturday 13th December.

Visitors Bishops Cleeve appeared to have done enough to take maximum points when they went 4-3 ahead in the second minute of injury time, having come from 2-0 behind.

But the Larks netted a last-gasp equaliser in the Pitching In Southern League Division One South encounter.

Watched by a crowd of 208, Kieran Phillips gave the hosts a 16th-minute lead.

Mitres’ keeper Lewis Clayton – a former Cheltenham Town youngster who also played for IFK Mora in Sweden – parried a shot and Jack Camm got onto the loose ball, squaring for Phillips to net with a tap-in.

And when Larkhall made it 2-0 five minutes later, it seemed that revenge would be gained for their defeat in Gloucestershire on the opening day of the league campaign. Jack Camm was brought down in the box and Dawid Regula drilled in the resulting penalty.

It was almost 3-0 in the 26th minute, Alex Camm narrowly off target with a free header when he attempted to put away a cross to the back post.

But Cleeve, who are chasing promotion again this season after falling in the play-off semifinals last term, were not about to capitulate.

They reduced the arrears when Ben McLean volleyed in on the turn in the 27th minute and almost levelled when skipper Ross Langworthy sent a drive just past a post six minutes later.

However, Larkhall twice went close to adding to their tally as the interval approached.

First, Ryan Beckinsale was denied by a block from Jake Lee. And then Beckinsale drove over after being set up Phillips.

But the Mitres were in buoyant mood at the break – because they equalised in injury-time, Joe Keeping’s cross going in via a post.

Athletic had two good chances to restore their advantage in the opening 15 minutes of the second period.

But the game swung Cleeve’s way in the 74th minute when they were awarded a penalty after a foul on Lee, and Toby Holland made no mistake from 12 yards.

Regula prodded the ball just wide four minutes later. But the Larks got back on terms in the 84th minute, when substitute Eben Mortimer-Taylor pounced on an error by Clayton and slotted home.

However, Cleeve seemed to have secured three points when, after a cross by Harry Leeson, McLean struck two minutes into injurytime.

But with the last kick of the game, captain Sam Boulton lashed home from 10 yards to earn Larkhall a deserved draw.

Named among the Larks’ substitutes was Freddie King, a forward on loan from Enterprise National League South side Weston-super-Mare.

The draw meant that Cleeve dropped out of the play-off zone, to be replaced by Shaftesbury.

The North Dorset team recorded a 2-0 home victory over Brixham.

Athletic will make the trip to North Devon to take on Bideford in the league on Saturday 20th December (3pm).

The Robins are four points and four places behind Larkhall in the league table, the Plain Ham men holding 10th spot.

Larkhall Development will go into Christmas in third place in the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League Premier Division.

The Larks, who have no game on Saturday 20th December, ensured they hold a five-point lead over fourth-placed Shrivenham by winning 2-0 at Faringdon Town on Saturday 13th December.

Faringdon started well on a heavy pitch at Tucker Park and Mason Nolan-Kemp cleared off the line.

But Athletic, who were missing several key players, weathered the storm and Ben Wickens twice went close.

However, Larkhall opened the scoring in the 20th minute, when a Wickens shot was parried as far as Angus Williamson, who tapped home.

A shot from the Larks’ Tobias Little was saved in the second half before a Wickens header from a Rueben Whitson cross crashed against the inside of a post.

But the points were sealed 17 minutes from the end when Wickens flicked on a throw and Nolan-Kemp fired in his third goal in three games.

Walcot go second after thrashing Swindon, Combe see off Fairford Richard Briggs Reporter

WALCOT bounced back superbly from their second successive defeat in Counties 1 Tribute Ale Southern South, their 40-15 thrashing of Swindon lifting them up to second place in the table.

Losses to Salisbury and Sherborne in their previous two games had seen the Lansdownbased club slip from first to third in the standings, the Dorset All Blacks going into pole position.

But Walcot’s victory over Swindon at Albert Field on Saturday 6th December, coupled with a big win over Corsham for fellow promotion chasers Swanage & Wareham and a defeat for Sherb at Devizes meant it is a case of all change around the summit.

After nine rounds of matches, the Swans are the league leaders, with Walcot just a point adrift and Sherborne down to third spot, a further point back.

Once Walcot realised they had the edge over Swindon out wide, last weekend’s game exploded into life.

Archie Ingall brilliantly held on to a long pass to claim the first Walcot try, Cameron Hamer adding the extras to make it 7-0.

Playing to their strengths, Swindon kept the ball close to the forwards as much as possible, mainly adopting route-one attack. And the guests scored the next points, emphasising their physicality with a catch-anddrive try that changed the score to 7-5.

Home back rowers Ed Harris, Jack Newman and Harry Williams worked hard to quell their much larger opposition’s efforts and help the threes burst through the tenacious Swindon defence.

Ingall soon grabbed his second touchdown, and a touchline conversion from Hamer extended the Walcot lead to 21-5.

A lovely Walcot try came courtesy of Ben McMullen off a secure scrum on halfway – and the first half ended with the home side 33-5 ahead, Newman going over and another conversion making up the tally.

Swindon responded positively in the second half. With the weather worsening, some long-range kicks from their fly-half got them into Walcot territory time after time. In a carbon copy of their first try, Swindon scored again to show they weren’t there just to make up the numbers.

Walcot then enjoyed a dominant spell in which they felt they should have scored two tries.

But a huge 50:22 clearance from Swindon and a mix-up by the hosts ensured the travellers bagged another touchdown, making the score 33-15.

However, the final word went to Walcot, Fin Dewar waltzing his way to the line for a converted try.

Walcot named McMullen, Dewar and Ingall their joint men of the match.

Ollie Docherty’s defensive display earned him the manof-the-match nod for Combe Down as they maintained their Counties 2 Tribute Ale Dorset & Wilts North promotion push with a 22-13 success at Fairford on Saturday 6th December.

The second-placed Down are only denied top spot by points difference, Minety in the ascendancy after nine rounds of fixtures.

The same afternoon, Combe Down 2nd XV saw off visitors Trowbridge 3rd XV 46-10 in Counties 3 Tribute Ale Dorset & Wilts Central, Jake Gillett and Alex Dodgson the winners’ joint star men for their work in the line-out, controlling the ball off the set piece.

Walcot 2nd XV were 26-24 derby winners at Oldfield Old Boys 2nd XV in Counties 4 Tribute Ale Somerset North on Saturday 6th December.

Harry Bullard was the standout player, chalking up two tries for the guests. Ollie Burage and Liam Hollis also touched down for Walcot.

What pleased visitors’ captain Dean Griffith the most was the massive contribution of the colts in the team.

JERRY Gill says that his seven years as Bath City manager was a special time that filled him with pride.

Gill made his name as a player with the Romans before moving to Yeovil Town, his superb performances in the Glovers’ 1996-97 ICIS (Isthmian) League title-winning season, plus England National Game XI honours, earning him a switch to Birmingham City.

He spent more than a decade in the Football League, also appearing for Northampton Town and Cheltenham Town, and eventually turned to management.

Gill took the Bath hot seat in October 2017 but left by mutual consent in November 2024 and was replaced by Darren Way. In a post on LinkedIn on Thursday 11th December, 55-year-old Gill said: “It’s been just over a year since I departed Bath City FC after seven years as first-team manager.

“Since then I have been fortunate enough to have been offered and taken up roles as an interim assistant manager at National League level with Yeovil Town FC (recently) and Solihull Moors FC. In between saw a short spell at

Dagenham & Redbridge FC. “Reflecting on my time at Bath City I now realise what a special time that was, with so much to be proud of.

“A superb staff that gave their all, so many dedicated, talented players and a superb fan base that supported and at times challenged us.

“For a part-time football club to finish in the play-offs on three separate occasions, 10 players sold on to EFL or NL clubs, huge increase of 56% in attendances at Twerton Park and a win percentage of 45%, it took a lot of hard work and commitment.

I loved every minute of driving it from all angles.

“The longer you are in the game the more you learn from reflection. You find out who and what you really are. Areas you are strong in and areas to evolve and improve in.

“I am really excited at what comes next. I am full of energy and enthusiasm for the game that has always [been] and always will be my life. A first-team manager’s role is my focus and what I am hoping to step into again next, wherever that opportunity could be in football who knows? I will be ready.”

Yeovil announced on 11th December that agreement had been reached to terminate Gill’s contract at Huish Park.

Rennie bags two as Romans see off Gloucester in 2025 finale Richard Briggs Reporter

JASMINE Rennie scored twice as Bath City Women secured their fifth victory of the season in Shield Services Group South West Regional Women’s League Division One North.

The Romans travelled to relegation-battlers Gloucester City Women Reserves and recorded a 3-0 success on the artificial surface at the KMM Energy Stadium on Sunday 14th December.

And Bath almost took a secondminute lead, Adella Clarke being denied by Tigers’ keeper Sam

Linteo.

But Clarke made no mistake 14 minutes later, as she put the guests in front when seizing on a ricochet to net from close range.

Linteo denied Rennie – and then the Romans’ Tara Taylor was off target with just the custodian to beat.

But Bath did made it 2-0 six minutes into the second half. Erin Duffey set up Rennie, who got the better of Linteo from 10 yards.

Gloucester’s best chance came when a speculative shot from Kiera Feighery cannoned off the inside of a Bath post.

However, the visitors were not fazed. Rennie fired narrowly over the bar before lashing in from 25

yards with 19 minutes remaining.

And the Romans had chances to make the scoreline more emphatic, a Duffy free-kick hitting a post and a Rennie drive slamming against the bar.

They will resume action on Sunday 4th January, when they face West Dorset team Bridport Women at St Mary’s Field in Somerset County Women’s League Division One. Odd Down Women wrapped up their 2025 programme by losing their unbeaten record in Somerset County Women’s League Division Two.

The Down went into their 10th game of the league campaign having dropped only two points – but mid-table Ilminster Town Ladies caused an upset by winning 2-1 at the Lew Hill Memorial Ground on Sunday 14th December.

Millie Lewis struck for the Down in a first half that ended 1-1. Lewis was picked out as the home side’s star performer.

On target for the South Somerset outfit were Harriet Kelly and their player-of-the-match Summer Stoodley.

Next up for Odd Down Women is a league fixture at home to Bishops Lydeard Ladies Reserves on Sunday 4th January.

BATH Rugby scored four tries but were beaten when they visited French side RC Toulon on Sunday 14th December.

The Blue, Black & White entered Stade Mayol top of Pool 2 of the Investec Champions Cup. And despite their 45-34 setback in the Round 2 fixture, they still lead the way – albeit by only one point from all of the other five teams.

So the bonus point they picked up on the Riviera was crucial.

While Bath saw off Munster at The Rec in Round 1, Toulon were beaten by Edinburgh Rugby in their opener so had a big point to prove.

But the hosts, who lie in third place in the Top 14, found themselves behind in the ninth minute, when Finn Russell kicked a 17-metre penalty from in front of the posts.

However, Toulon responded four minutes later with a try from Brian Alainu’uese on the right following a five-metre line-out, Matéo Garcia converting.

Russell booted a 22-metre penalty from in front of the posts in the 16th minute to leave Bath only a point behind. But Garcia responded in kind three minutes later to make the score 10-6.

The Blue, Black & White regained the lead when, in the 21st minute, Ted Hill touched down from short range on the left. Russell converted and the visitors were 13-10 in front.

Another Garcia penalty tied the game in the 25th minute – and Toulon went five points up when Nacho Brex crossed on the right for a 33nd-minute try.

Garcia landed a 47th-minute penalty to stretch Toulon’s advantage to 21-13.

However, again the home side responded. Gaël Drean made a fine run on the left on his way to adding a 55th-minute try, Garcia majored and Toulon were 28-20 in front.

But Bath’s challenge was extinguished when Toulon’s Teddy Baubigny touched down from a line-out drive on the left with the clock in the red, Garcia slotting over the extras via the right post to complete the scoring.

Toulon had 54% of the possession and 55% of the territory in the thrilling encounter. They made 307 metres, whereas Bath gained 312 metres.

The Investec Champions Cup now takes a break until the new year. And Bath will return to France for Round 3 – Castres Olympique await at Stade PierreFabre on Friday 9th January.

The Blue, Black & White will be back in Gallagher PREM action on Sunday 21st December, when they take on Newcastle Red Bulls at Kingston Park Stadium (3pm).

Bath will return to The Rec on Saturday 27th December, when they face Northampton Saints in PREM Round 8.
