The wardens will act as ambassadors for the council and the universities across the whole of the city, but especially where there are greater numbers of students in the local community.

Helping to build communication links and being on hand to support all residents if issues arise will be important elements of the role.

The £105,000 funding for the new posts runs from September 2020 for three years and is one of five projects to share more than £500,000 from the Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) fund.

cil places on developers to support community improvement schemes such as schools, transport links, open spaces and recreational facilities.

The wardens, who will be based in the Oldfield Park area, will provide a visible presence in areas of Bath that have higher level of students in Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs).

They will help resolve issues such as unkempt gardens, waste man-

agement and noise, as well as educating and informing tenants about their rights around housing standards.

They will also look to help create new residents’ associations, where they do not already exist in the city and act as a communications link to feed back issues to the local ward councillors, as well as developing a network of voluntary community wardens to...

FIRST West of England has introduced changes on many of its bus routes across Bath, in response to the Government’s announcement that everyone can now use public transport.

The changes have seen some routes increased and selected timetables reinstated to support social distancing onboard, as more passengers start to travel by bus again.

Some Sunday services have returned to more normal operating hours, as the bus operator adjusts the timetables to match customer demand.

James Freeman, Managing Director at First West of England, said: “We’re pleased to welcome back more passengers to our buses, following the Government’s latest announcement that people can use public transport again for everyday journeys.

“Over the last few months, we have steadily increased our services, following the significant reduction during the Coronavirus lockdown.

“Our priority is to ensure that customers can return to travel by bus again safely and with social distancing in place.

“To do this, we’ve adjusted our timetables and deployed buses on the busiest routes to provide additional capacity for social distancing where needed.

“As we emerge from this crisis, we are finding innovative ways to help our customers travel by bus whilst social distancing.

“We’ve introduced new functions to the First Bus app so you can now track the location of your next bus and check the seat availability onboard, and we’ve now just launched the an exciting new trial of the UK’s first scheduled bus booking system on selected routes in Bristol, Bath and Thornbury, where passengers can reserve a space on the bus before they travel.

“We continue to monitor all our routes and are working closely with the West of England Combined Authority to ensure that bus travel is available for those

who need it.

“Our entire fleet remains subject to a robust cleaning regime, including a long-lasting sanitising treatment, and we want to remind all customers that they are legally obligated to wear a face covering when travelling by bus, unless they fall within the Government’s specified exemptions for this rule.”

The changes to First Bus services in Bath include: • On Service 1 (Bath Bus Station – Southdown) there are minor changes to frequency on some journeys: Daytime journeys Monday to Friday change from every 7 minutes to run every 8 minutes; Sunday services will also reduce slightly, running every 15 minutes instead of every 10 minutes, with reduced operating hours.

Saturday services will remain the same, running every 10 minutes.

• Service 2 (Bath City Centre – Mulberry Park) will continue to run every 15 minutes for daytime journeys Monday to Friday and on Saturdays it will increase from every 30 minutes to every 15 minutes. On Sundays, the service will continue to run every 30 minutes, but starting a bit later and finishing at the normal Sunday time.

• Some changes are being introduced to bus services on routes 3 and 3a: Service 3 (Foxhill – Bathford via Bath City Centre) will continue to run every 15 minutes for daytime journeys Monday to Friday. Over the weekend, the Saturday timetable will increase to every 20 minutes and on Sundays the service will continue to run every 30 minutes but reverting to the pre-Covid hours of operation. On Service 3a (Weston – Batheaston via Bath City Centre), all buses running Monday to Friday will be renumbered as Service 3b, as part of the ‘Book my bus ride’ pilot. The “b” indicates that journeys can be booked on this vehicle, as from August 3rd, customers will be able to reserve a space on this service during the week by visiting bookmybusride. com. A Saturday service 3a will also be introduced to run every

20 minutes on this route.

• Service 4 also operates between Weston and Bath (Weston – Odd Down via Bath City Centre). This service will continue to run every 15 minutes for daytime journeys Monday to Friday and every 20 minutes at the weekend. However, on Sundays there will be changes to the operating hours of the timetable.

• Service 5 (Bath Bus Station – Whiteway) will continue to run every 8 minutes during the day, Monday to Friday, however the extra short journeys between City Centre and Twerton Arch will be withdrawn as these have proved not to be necessary. The weekend timetable for Service 5 will continue to run every 15 minutes, but with Sunday operating hours back to pre-Covid-19 times.

• Weekend services on routes 6 (Bath Bus Station – Fairfield Park), 6a Bath Bus Station – Fairfield/Larkhall) and 7 (Bath Bus Station – Larkhall) will see some minor changes: The Saturday Service 6a will be replaced by services 6 and 7 to run every 30 minutes. On Sundays, services will continue to run every 30 minutes, but starting later and finishing earlier, corresponding to the pre-Covid-19 timetable.

• On Service 8 (Bath City Centre – Kingsway via Oldfield Park and Monksdale Estate) the Saturday timetable will double in frequency for daytime journeys to run every 20 minutes.

The Sunday service on this route will continue to run every 40 min-

utes but starting later and finishing earlier than in recent weeks.

• Service 9 remains suspended and customers wishing to travel by bus on this route should use the alternative services 3a, 3b and 4 which operate between Weston and the City Centre. A further change is planned for the start of September to provide a service for people in Westcombe and Upper Weston.

• University services U3 and U6 continue to be suspended, as the University remains closed to students.

• Service 37 (Bristol – Hanham – Bath) continues to be suspended.

Services 19 (Bath – Cribbs Causeway), X39 (Bath – Bristol direct), 44 (City Centre – Cadbury Heath via Hanham Common) and 45 (City Centre – Cadbury Heath via Hanham) provide alternatives for customers travelling on this route.

As more people begin to return to work, Bath Park & Ride services will continue to run on the current timetables, with some very minor changes: • There will be a slight change to departure times on Park & Ride service 42 between Odd Down and Royal United Hospital and customers are advised to check the timetable.

• Sunday operating hours will reduce slightly on the timetable for Newbridge Park & Ride Service 21; Lansdown Park & Ride Service 31; and Odd Down Park & Ride Service 41, however buses will continue to run on the same frequency.

community engagement in Bath towards local needs.

“This project is designed to bring together greater collaboration between short term and longterm residents across a number of wards in the city.”

Plea to stop turning used face masks into litter BATH & North East Somerset Council has issued a plea urging people not to dump their used facemasks or gloves as litter in parks, open spaces and streets across the local area.

As part of the council’s anti-littering campaign ‘Don’t be a tosser’ a reminder is going out about properly disposing of unwanted face coverings, gloves or personal protective equipment.

Councillor David Wood, cabinet member for Climate Emergency and Neighbourhood Services, said: “This is a plea to people to safely dispose of their used and unwanted face masks or gloves.

“Our cleansing teams shouldn’t have to pick these up and put themselves at risk. You can’t recycle them either so please make sure they are properly disposed of in your general waste bin.

“We had a hugely positive response to the launch of our ‘Don’t be a tosser’ campaign and I’d like to thank everyone who has supported us.

“Littering has a huge impact on our environment, wildlife and makes life unpleasant for everyone who wants to enjoy our beautiful open spaces.”

Anyone who is caught littering can be issued with a £150 fixed penalty notice from the council’s in-house enforcement team.

Air Ambulance charity unveils brand new critical care car THE Great Western Air Ambulance Charity has unveiled a brand new critical care car, which will allow them to reach more critically ill patients across the region.

The charity’s emergency crew respond to those in need by critical care cars, as well as their helicopter, both carrying lifesaving medical equipment on board, including ventilators and advanced drugs that are not carried on a land ambulance.

GWAAC’s crew are called to the most seriously ill or injured patients across the region, and their specialist skills enable them to perform hospital-level emergency care at the scene, giving the patient the best possible chance of a positive outcome.

In 2019, they received over 2,000 call-outs to those in urgent need, of which over two-thirds were responded to by critical care car.

The cars ensure that the crew are always ready to respond in any conditions, for example when the helicopter is unable to fly due to bad weather or maintenance, or when the location of a patient has limited safe landing sites nearby and is easier to access by road.

equipped cars are essential for us to reach and treat patients in the most effective way.

“The new vehicles will enable our team to negotiate tougher terrain and drive safely in challenging weather conditions to reach patients quickly and safely, particularly in rural areas.”

The new model, a Skoda Kodiaq, has been modified to meet the full requirements of the air ambulance’s Specialist Paramedics and Critical Care Doctors. The vehicle has been specially converted to carry all the lifesaving medical kit that the crew bring to their patients. To convert and fully kit out a vehicle

The new car will be one of three vehicles to join GWAAC’s fleet, updating the current models that the service uses, after the charity successfully bid for a oneoff Government grant from the Department of Health and Social Care last year to purchase the much-needed new cars.

As a charity, GWAAC received no day-to-day funding from the Government or NHS, and relies solely on charitable donations and grants from the communities it serves and local organisations to raise the £4 million needed each year to remain operational.

News in Brief Three arrested in connection with rave Avon and Somerset Police have arrested three people in connection with an illegal rave at the former Charmy Down airfield on the outskirts of Bath last month.

Three men aged 22, 23 and 26 were all arrested on Wednesday 5th August, on suspicion of conspiring to cause a public nuisance.

The investigation into the event, which caused widespread disruption overnight on Saturday 18th to Sunday 19th July, is continuing.

Anyone with information which could help these enquiries can get in touch with officers by calling 101 quoting reference 5220160383.

Avon and Somerset Police say they continue to have patrolling officers dedicated to responding to unlawful gatherings and need to know if you suspect an event is being set up so they can intervene early on to prevent it.

Arrests after 29-yearold man dies following incident on footpath AVON and Somerset Police say they are continuing to investigate the sudden death of a 29-year-old man in Bath on Thursday 13th August.

The man died following an incident involving a number of people on the footpath which runs along the River Avon, just off Brassmill Lane, at around 3.15pm.

Two men, aged 47 and 53, were arrested at the scene.

A cordon was put in place while specialist crime scene investigators examined the area and police officers carried out house to house enquiries.

Local CCTV footage is also being reviewed as part of the inquiry.

Temporary Detective Superintendent James Riccio, head of the Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “It is always tragic when someone dies unexpectedly and our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends.

“The man’s next of kin have been informed and specially trained family liaison officers are

supporting them and will keep them updated with the progress of our investigation.

“Our inquiry is in the very early stages and we are still working to understand the nature of the incident on the footpath and how exactly the man died.

“I appreciate the man’s death may cause concern among local residents but we are confident what happened was an isolated incident.

“I’d like to reassure people we will undertake a thorough investigation and do our utmost to provide the answers the man’s family need."

T/Det Supt Riccio added: “Neighbourhood officers remain in the area and I’d encourage anyone with any concerns to speak to them or contact 101 and ask for the local neighbourhood team.”

Artwork fills streets of Bath following citywide competition TO celebrate the reopening of Bath, Bath BID, in conjunction with Bounce Back Bath and Minuteman Press Bath, have lined the city streets with special artwork created by locals.

In July, the Bath Business Improvement District (BID) invited the public to enter their Bounce Back Bath Art Competition, with the aim of inviting locals and visitors to rediscover all the wonderful things Bath has to offer.

The competition was open to everybody living and working in Bath and North East Somerset, with entrants separated into three age categories: Under Ten, Under 21, and Over 21.

Dozens of entries were submitted and 48 were picked by the judges to be reproduced by Minuteman Press as two-metre-long giant bunting, which can be found on lamppost pennants in Southgate Street, Brunel Square and Churchill Bridge throughout August.

All of the entries are available to view in a colourful window display at 24 New Bond Street, and all shortlisted designs can be seen at bathbid.co.uk/bathbunting-display.

Bath BID CEO, Allison Herbert, said: “We are so pleased to see the city coming back to life after a very tough few months.

“This is just one of a number of safe, socially distant, joyful events

celebrating the creativity of the people of Bath.

“We can’t wait for people to come along and see their artwork on display.

“We are excited to be flying these bright, cheerful flags high in the streets of Bath, welcoming people back to the city and celebrating all that is brilliant about Bath.”

Local artist Kathryn Parkin contributed one of the pennant designs, and was thrilled to see it flying high: “It is an honour to have my drawing of Eagle House in Northend hanging on two-metre bunting in Bath city centre.

“I am proud to be a part of the #RediscoverBath project, welcoming people back to the city and showcasing what we have to offer.”

While the banners are on display, the public will be able to vote for their favourite piece of artwork.

An expert team of judges have selected a shortlist for each age category, with voting set to take place on the Bath BID’s Facebook page.

Winners will receive a Bath Gift Card to spend in one of over 200 businesses in Bath.

Morris Minor Centre set to open at former Hartwell Garage site on Newbridge Road THE former Hartwell Garage on Newbridge Road in Bath is set to become a Morris Minor Centre after the Charles Ware Group took over as tenants of the site.

The Charles Ware Morris Minor Centre was established in 1975 in Bath, moving from the Lower Bristol Road to the Upper Bristol Road and eventually in 2009, moved 8 miles away to Clothier Road in Brislington, Bristol.

28 staff are currently employed in Brislington, where the company restores, rebuilds and sells Morris Minors and other classic cars, as well as running a comprehensive Morris Minor retail parts division.

Charles Ware Group shareholder Gareth Hamer, a Bath resident spanning 6 decades, said: “We have taken over the lease on

the site; we will be temporary custodians of the garage and facilities while decisions are made over the future of the site.

“We plan to display and sell Morris Minor cars in Bath and to show our skills by bringing staff to work here under COVID-19 social distancing guidelines.

“We continue to recruit more apprentices within a scheme running in partnership with The Heritage Skills Academy and the charity Starter Motor.” The Charles Ware Group have said they have no involvement in the site’s future development.

The site is not currently open to the public whilst works are underway at the premises.

An opening date is expected to be announced soon.

THE housing market in Bath is very much reflecting the notion that: “Bath is a place that people always want to move to,” says Nikki Purmel, joint owner and director of TYNINGS Estate Agents in Bath.

After lockdown estate agents in Bath are seeing a record increase in sales and enquiries for properties in the area. Nikki Purmel added: “The virus has had a profound effect on what people want, especially with buyers from London wanting to relocate this way. We are trying to keep up with such a busy time at the moment.

The market is brilliant.”

Luke Brady, Director and Head of Bath Office and southern Residential for Savills, said: “The market has surprised all of us after it was suspended for so many months. There has been an unprecedented surge in demands, with a record number of web hits for us.

We have seen an increase of 138% from London buyers, this is figure we could not have predicted, especially as we have this slow march towards, probably one of the worst recessions in history.

At the moment, with low interest rates, money is cheap to borrow.

This is making the housing market more accessible to buyers. We are definitely seeing a growing number of enquiries for village and country properties, with buyers appreciating more space and more views.

With Bath, being one of the most desirable places to live in the UK, the city centre market has been remarkably resilient.

Prices in the countryside have remained relatively static. As such, they now represent good value.

We have had a number of properties receive competitive bids in both the city and country markets. Combine this with changing attitudes to working from home and the improved train service to Paddington, and the prospects for selling are very good indeed.”

He added: “I would offer words of warning though; once the reaction to lockdown measures have slowed and we have gone through an uncertain winter, this is when the recession could really grip everyone. Of course, we still have Boris Johnson’s Brexit to be completed on top of all of this.

If you are thinking of moving in the next couple of years, now is the time to do it, as the tax incentives can’t last forever.”

Nikki Purmel, also said of Brexit: “People were initially cautious and we had a quick start to the year in January but now they are fed up Luke Brady with the ongoing drama of Brexit which is having the knock-on effect of more sales too. The government’s reduction in stamp duty, until March 31st next year, has also meant an increase for us, particularly in the higher end market.”

£15.5m of funding to implement clean air zone Stephen Sumner

COUNCIL leaders have secured significantly more funding for Bath’s clean air zone than their original offer from central government.

It has now offered £15.5million to implement the scheme and support affected businesses, taking the total sum to £23.5million.

The figure is less than Bath and North East Somerset Council had hoped for and it will have to scale back its ambitions, but leaders are confident it will be enough.

The zone’s original start date was pushed back from November to an as yet unknown date early in 2021.

Speaking at the cabinet meeting on 22nd July, councillor Sarah Warren said: “Over the past few months we have been in negotiation with Government, challenging the initial funding offer for the clean air zone, which fell significantly short of our original request.

“Government has now agreed to provide up to £15.5million to implement the scheme and sup-

port affected businesses, bringing the total funding package to £23.5million.

“Having already completed much of the build, and revisited our financial models, we feel confident that this will be sufficient.”

The council has been offered £2.1million less than the £9.2million it wanted for implementation costs, all of which will come from the risk/contingency allowance.

It is set to receive £3.3million less than the £14.6million it requested for mitigation measures, but that is in line with the funding received by Leeds and Birmingham.

B&NES Council’s financial assistance scheme, bus upgrades and last-mile delivery proposals will all be scaled back, and it will have to shelve its plans for a car club.

Cllr Warren said the coronavirus lockdown had affected businesses and their plans to upgrade their vehicles so the financial support package was made more flexible.

all live with and I think will deliver the results we all want to see.”

The cabinet voted to accept the funding offer.

When the clean air zone is activated, the worst polluting taxis, private hire vehicles, minibuses, LGVs and vans will be charged £9 a day to enter the zone, while buses, coaches and lorries will have to pay £100.

News in Brief Witnesses sought after cars damaged at Ford showroom Avon and Somerset Police have launched an appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage after thousands of pounds worth of damage was caused to a number of cars at a showroom in Bath.

Police believe the seven Ford cars were damaged in the space of just two minutes overnight on Friday 7th to Saturday 8th August at the Allen Ford showroom on the Lower Bristol Road.

Officers at the adjacent police base heard the noise and ran down three flights of stairs to investigate, finding the damaged vehicles with smashed windows, scratches and dents.

A search found no trace of the offender and early CCTV enquiries suggest the incident happened between 10.56pm and 10.58pm.

The showroom’s key holder was alerted and the investigation continues.

TWO floors of the Manvers Street office block Lewis House are to be rented commercially for the next 12 months by the University of Bath from owner Bath & North East Somerset Council.

The ground floor at Lewis House will continue to deliver publicfacing services, including council and police, where it is safe to do so.

The council’s One Stop Shop currently provides a limited welfare service and self-service due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Council staff based on floors one and two prior to lockdown will in future see their work base moved to Keynsham Civic Centre, but with the flexibility to work from home and with some space in the Guildhall also available to book

by staff when they need to work from the city centre for the day.

Floors three and four of Lewis House will also be marketed as office space to generate income, again with staff moving over to the flexible working arrangements highlighted above.

As well as generating muchneeded income for the council, staff continuing working effectively from home, leading to reduced travel, will also support delivery of the council’s climate emergency commitments.

Councillor Dine Romero, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council said “Prior to Covid-19, we said we wanted to significantly reduce our office accommodation costs, given the financial pressures we were under even then.

“Lockdown has shown we can work flexibly, including from home where that makes sense.

“This year-long lease arrangement with the University of Bath gains us vital income from this building whilst maintaining service levels. It also helps with social distancing and reduces the need for students to travel as frequently.

“We are working closely with both universities to ensure a managed return of students at the start of the new academic year which puts public health at the centre.

“We are also committed to making sure the office space we own has active, well-managed uses that contribute to the economies and local businesses of Bath, Keynsham, Midsomer Norton and the wider area.”

AVON and Somerset Police were able to disperse a number of large gatherings across the area, including Bath, on Saturday 1st August thanks to support from the public.

Events in Bathampton, Bristol and in Cheddar Gorge were disrupted after members of the public informed police they were taking place.

It follows recent calls from Avon and Somerset Police for residents to let them know when events were happening.

In Bathampton, several calls were made to the non-emergency number 101 about a rave being set up at approximately 11.35pm on the Saturday evening.

Officers engaged with the landowners, who did not support the event, and additional resources were brought in.

A large number of vehicles attempting to arrive were subsequently turned away, while a dispersal order was put in place which required those already in attendance to leave.

Police also received several reports from 2pm onwards about an unlicensed music event taking place in Dame Emily Park in Bedminster, Bristol, which was attended by several hundred people.

Officers attended and engaged with the organisers who agreed to stop the music at 6pm.

Emergency services subsequently received further calls about antisocial behaviour in the park at 9.30pm, with hundreds of people reported to be standing around a bonfire.

Police returned to the park along with the fire service leading to those gathering leaving soon afterwards.

The local neighbourhood policing team in Cheddar were also called into action when a large number of vehicles started to gather in the Gorge from 3pm onwards.

Additional resources were again brought in and officers worked with organisers to bring an end to the event. Several motorists were also issued with individual dispersal notices.

Chief Inspector Nigel Colston said: “Our ability to disrupt large gatherings and raves is significantly enhanced when we have the support of our communities.

“We’re extremely grateful for the assistance provided to us this weekend which enabled us to take action and bring an end to events which started to frustrate local residents.

“We hope people appreciate we can’t always charge in to situations to bring them to an early finish and there may well be some disruption until we can safely disperse people from the area. All of the events we disrupted were in motion before officers attended but we were able to negotiate with organisers and participants and encourage them to leave or issue orders requiring them to.

“The sooner we’re made aware of events taking place the quicker we can act and I’d like to thank all those who called us yesterday to report their concerns, it helped enormously.”

MP warns “businesses might not survive”

Curo to deliver first ultra energy efficient homes at Mulberry Park

BATH MP Wera Hobhouse has warned that “many of our wellloved businesses might not survive” due to the coronavirus pandemic, during her latest online public meeting.

The meeting, which covered the theme of “Innovation Bath: The Future of Business”, took place on Wednesday 29th July.

Ms Hobhouse and her guest speakers, local leaders representing business, the creative and technology sectors, the city’s universities and Bath College, discussed collective efforts underway to build a strong future for Bath’s economy in the face of COVID-19.

Support for local businesses was the first topic on the agenda.

Wera said: “Apart from the unprecedented health crisis, we are facing an unprecedented economic crisis. I have been campaigning tirelessly in the last weeks and months to support Bath businesses and employees and the self-employed.

“In response, the Government has adapted the support schemes already in place, extended the furlough scheme, and brought in new financial support packages, for example, for the arts and culture sector. But our hospitality, leisure and retail industries are still facing hugely challeng-

Avon Fire & Rescue creates wellbeing spaces to support staff AVON Fire & Rescue Service has opened a number of wellbeing spaces to support and improve staff mental health, providing spaces to unwind, reflect and relax.

Following the unprecedented period of COVID-19, and the various traumatic incidents that firefighters attend throughout their careers, Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) believes that these wellbeing spaces are key for mental health.

To date, staff at Yate, Patchway, Southmead, Kingswood and Blagdon fire stations have designed their own wellbeing spaces, often in conjunction with local communities, and seven more spaces are planned.

The other sites include Avonmouth fire station as part of the new build, and at the Lansdown South West Command Development Centre in Bath, as part of other improvements to the site.

The majority of work has also been carried out by station staff and they have managed to source some materials and supplies at a discount or from generous donations from local suppliers and traders.

The spaces make the stations nicer places to work and demonstrate the positive links between green space, fresh air & mental wellbeing.

The creative herb gardens, hanging baskets, planters, trees and fish ponds also give a boost to local biodiversity.

Building on this success, AF&RS will be exploring further opportunities to plant trees and improve the air quality and ecology in and around their sites.

Leanne Wharton, Health & Wellbeing Advisor for AF&RS, said: “Having a wellbeing space not only helps with emotional wellbeing but our physical wellbeing too.

“Spending time outside in a relaxing space can reduce stress hormones, muscle tension and blood pressure as well as improving our mood.

“In the current climate, it is more important than ever to provide an opportunity for staff to unwind and connect outside of their usual workplace.

“It is fantastic to see the development of these spaces and I highly encourage other stations to take advantage of this opportunity to enhance wellbeing for staff.”

AF&RS launched Trauma Risk Incident Management (TRiM) in 2018. This provides firefighters with information about the reactions they might experience after a traumatic incident.

It can also involve discussing the incident itself, how it has impacted them and identifies any

risk factors.

Specially trained members of staff are on hand to discuss these incidents confidentially, providing help and signposting further support when needed.

This proactive approach can help prevent the onset of PostTraumatic Stress Disorder and help reduce the stigma around mental health.

AF&RS has also employed a Health and Wellbeing Advisor to bring together all aspects of mental health and wellbeing.

This is alongside the Lead Fitness

Advisor who promotes physical wellbeing support, providing a holistic approach to staff.

Simon Shilton, Assistant Chief Fire Officer for AF&RS, added: “I’m hugely proud of the strides our organisation has made in terms of raising awareness of mental health issues and supporting our colleagues.

“It’s something that has been highlighted over the years and after listening to our staff about what is important for their wellbeing we have now started to combat these issues from the

ground up.

“The outstanding work that has gone into designing, building and maintaining these wellbeing spaces shows the resilience and mental health of our staff is at the heart of everything we do.

“The spaces represent an essential area on a station which allows our people to take time away from the challenges they face each day.

“Having served on the frontline, I know what staff see regularly, so this is about protecting them both mentally and physically.”

Community Families invited to enjoy secret garden trail at Beckford's Tower UNTIL 6th September, families across the area are being encouraged to visit Bath’s bestkept secret at Beckford’s Tower, in the cemetery that was once William Beckford’s garden.

With lockdown easing, Billie the Mouse and her family have come out to play, with children being invited to find and explore their miniature mouse houses, gardens and treehouse hideaways.

Families are invited to take a stroll to the Tower and enjoy the miniature scenes.

There will be suggested activities to do and invitations to play games, sing songs and enjoy the nature that surrounds the cemetery.

The trail will be accompanied by some further information and activities available on the Tower family learning page here: https://beckfordstower.org.uk/ learning-resources/.

Visitors are invited to share pictures of their trip with the Beckford’s Tower team using the hashtag #secretgarden on social media.

The trail is a self-led activity for families to discover on a visit to the Tower and Cemetery.

All children must be accompanied by an adult whilst exploring the cemetery, and it is requested that families keep to the mown paths whilst enjoying a visit.

Organisers are asking people to respect other visitors enjoying the cemetery and keep to social distancing.

The event is part of “Our Tower”, a project at Beckford’s Tower which has initial support from The Na-

tional Lottery Heritage Fund.

The project aims to bring William Beckford’s complex and creative life to a wider audience by sharing stories of his writings and collections, his inherited slave wealth, his sexuality and exile through a new visitor experience.

The project will also restore the architectural masterpiece of the Tower built for Beckford in 1826.

Already an important Bath landmark familiar to residents and commuters alike, the aim of this project is to inspire an appreciation for the story of William Beckford and his building, encouraging more people to explore and enjoy it and its landscape.

Fresh milk to go on sale thanks to city’s first milk vending machine BATH’S very first milk vending machine will be opened on Tuesday 1st September at Green Park Station, thanks to Somerset dairy farmer Andy Salmon.

Andy’s family have farmed at Bullsbridge Farm near Frome for 80 years and he will be providing super-fresh milk straight from his farm to the residents of Bath.

Three years ago, he set up Tytherington Milk Station and began selling his Pasture Promise free range milk to local people through a vending machine located at the farm gate.

The milk comes from a herd of 240 cows grazing pastures 13 miles from Bath.

It is pasteurised on the farm and is unhomogenised. The fresh milk will be delivered to the refrigerated vending machine at Green Park every day.

Visitors to the vending machine at Green Park Station will be able to purchase a 1-litre glass bottle, with a screw top, which they can fill from the machine, take home, wash and reuse.

There is no plastic involved and the glass bottles can be reused again and again.

Andy Salmon said: “We are proud of our farm, our cows and the milk we produce. That’s why I wanted to find a way for local people to enjoy our milk and learn a bit more about who we are and how we farm.

“It was clear from the moment we installed the first vending machine on the farm that people were keen to find out what really fresh milk from the farm tastes like.

“The feedback we have received has been fantastic and the fact that they keep coming back for more has given us the confidence to grow our business and offer our milk to the people of Bath.”

The farm is part of the Free Range Dairy Network, an organisation that works to support traditional family farms committed to giving their cows the freedom to graze in fields.

Their ‘Pasture Promise’ logo is the only label on milk to give milk lovers an assurance that the cows are grazed for a minimum of 180 days a year, 18 hours a day.

Neil Darwent, Director of the Free Range Dairy Network, added: “Giving an identity to the milk produced by Britain’s traditional, pasture-based farms means people are rediscovering ‘proper milk’ that tastes like milk used to taste. We are delighted to be working with the Salmon family on their new venture and the people of Bath are in for a real treat!

“The Pasture Promise logo gives milk lovers the chance to vote for freedom and fairness whenever they buy milk.”

The vending machine will open at 11am on Tuesday 1st September.

Bus space booking trial New service offered for children rolled out to Bath missing out on vital support FIRST West of England has extended its pioneering space booking system to its Batheaston to Weston service in Bath.

Customers on the 3a service are now able to book a space on the bus ahead of their journey.

The service has been renumbered as 3b to denote it is a bookable bus.

The route was chosen as one of the first trials as it serves the Royal United Hospital and many key workers remain reliant on public transport to get to and from work.

The booking system pilot launched last week on the Brislington Park and Ride service and will be further extended on the service between Bristol and Thornbury from 10th August.

The innovative facility comes as First continues to find ways to use technology to improve the experience for its customers.

It follows recent changes to First’s app, which now enables custom-

ers to track the location and seat availability of their bus.

Along with social distancing measures on its buses and an enhanced cleaning regime, it forms a package of measures to ensure customers can make informed and safe journeys on First’s buses and comes at a time when the Government has changed its advice to make it clear that anybody can use public transport.

The initiative is being pioneered

by First West of England in partnership with the West of England Combined Authority and is believed to be the first system of its kind operating on regular, scheduled services in the UK. Bookings can be made up to seven days in advance of the journey, with the flexibility of being able to reserve a space, subject to availability, right up to 15 minutes before departure. The reservation will secure a space on the chosen bus rather than a specific seat.

A VITAL new service is being provided for vulnerable children and young people across Bath who are missing out on support during the coronavirus pandemic.

‘See, Hear, Respond’, managed

by Barnardo’s and funded by the Department for Education, is a new programme offering online counselling, therapy and face-toface support.

Anyone can refer a child or young person to the service, which is free and confidential.

It aims to provide a “lifeline” for children and young people who are victims of sexual and domestic abuse, criminal exploitation, those struggling with their mental health, children with special educational needs and disabilities, young carers, and those needing help with reintegrating back into school.

Barnardo’s is leading a coalition of charities working alongside lo-

cal authorities, schools, colleges, police forces and healthcare professionals across England.

A telephone and online referral service will refer any concerns about a vulnerable child to the local partner organisation bestplaced to help.

Barnardo’s regional director Sarah Crawley said: “The coronavirus pandemic has meant that vulnerable children and young people have been ‘hidden’ from vital support services.

“Many have been suffering in silence and are in danger of being left behind if their needs are not met.

“That’s why Barnardo’s is leading a consortium of more than 30 charities to identify and support children at risk of harm.

“But for this to work, we need professionals – and anyone in contact with vulnerable children – to be our eyes and ears and refer those in need of help.

“Children have too often been unseen and unheard during this crisis and they risk becoming the forgotten victims.

“This initiative is a vital lifeline which will help them to navigate the pandemic and its aftermath, improving their long-term prospects so they can enjoy a successful future.”

Education Schools across Bath planning to reopen in September SCHOOLS across Bath and the surrounding area are planning to open to all pupils this September, Bath and North East Somerset Council has announced.

Parents and pupils are being contacted by their schools about the measures they have put in place to reopen safely.

Parents with any questions about their child’s school reopening should, in the first instance, contact the school directly.

In line with the Government’s plans to open schools fully to all students from September, Bath and North East Somerset Council is also considering safe travel to school.

It is working with transport providers and the West of England Combined Authority (WECA), which is the public transport authority for the region, to ensure a smooth return to school for pupils.

Councillor Kevin Guy, cabinet member for Children’s Services, said: “It is essential that children can get back into the classroom and the council has been doing everything in its power to ensure schools in Bath and North East Somerset open fully and safely in September.

“The majority of schools in

Bath & North East Somerset are academy schools and not directly controlled by the local authority, however we have been supporting them as they prepare to reopen safely.

“Our public health team is working with schools providing guidance on how to be ensure the right infection control is in place and how to manage any concerns or even cases should they occur.

“We have also provided mental health guidance.

“We are working with transport providers, as well as the transport authority WECA, to make sure children can get to school safely.

“We are currently waiting for further detail from government following its recent announcement about additional funding for school transport.”

All schools will be carrying out a full risk assessment to ensure that all Department for Education and Public Health England measures on school reopening are being implemented.

The council is supporting this by: • Providing information on how to reduce the risk of infection so as to keep all students and staff safe.

• Working with schools to ensure that they are aware of how to manage any cases of COVID-19

in a school.

• Working with Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services to provide information to schools on how to support the mental health and wellbeing of pupils and staff when school returns.

• Providing comprehensive details of all the teams in the council available to give advice to support the return of all pupils to all educational settings.

• Working with transport providers and WECA. If your child is entitled to free Home-to-School transport from Bath & North East Somerset it is anticipated that, where possible, transport will be provided normally.

This means for taxis, minibuses, dedicated ‘closed-door’ school coaches: • Children will be travelling within their school group, but not in their Year groups or ‘bubbles’.

• Children aged over 11 should wear face coverings and use hand sanitiser.

• A system will be in place to ensure the vehicles used are deep cleaned before and after travel.

The Passenger Transport team will be in touch with parents/ guardians with information relating to operator, boarding

points and timings.

Where large groups of students entitled to free Home-to-School transport are carried on public buses, the council will endeavour to temporarily move these pupils onto dedicated ‘closed-door’ alternatives.

The public bus network is currently running at reduced capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions, and temporarily transporting these entitled students on alternative services will mean that more seats on these routes remain available to the general public.

Public bus routes with small numbers of entitled Home-toSchool pupils on board should run as normal and capacity issues will be monitored carefully.

Face coverings must be worn on public transport, and social distancing rules apply.

If your child is not entitled to free Home-to-School transport, the council is asking parents/ guardians to consider their child’s travel options carefully.

It is likely there will be capacity issues on the public bus network due to coronavirus restrictions.

B&NES Council is asking residents to consider cycling or walking, but to bear in mind that there is likely to be increased

congestion around school premises.

If your child purchases a seat on a council-contracted school journey through the Farepayer scheme, it is expected that the Farepayer scheme will run, wherever possible, as normal.

However, there may be a greater delay this year in arranging the Farepayer scheme as the council has fewer ‘spare seats’ available because of social distancing measures.

Furthermore, your child might not get their first choice of route and boarding point, but this situation could be temporary as the COVID-19 situation eases.

B&NES Council say they understand that a small number of commercially operated bus routes may not be operating in September and their unavailability will have an impact on students.

The routes the local authority are aware of currently include: • Ralph Allen: First will not be running their R2 route from Twerton – Ralph Allen School, but a replacement service is being offered by ABus using a double-deck bus.

Details of timings/route/fares will be communicated when released by the company.

Remote Access to HE course offers pathway to NHS careers BATH College has put together a new Access to Higher Education Health and Social Care Diploma that is taught through distance learning, so learners can complete the course from home.

Future medical professionals have found the Access to Higher Education course at Bath College a significant stepping stone to achieve their career ambitions, however by adding a distance learning option it allows more people to be able to take advantage by working flexibly around their commitments.

Hopeful physiotherapists, optometrists, midwives, paramedics, midwives and paediatricians are among students who have completed Access to HE at Bath College in recent years.

Stephanie gained a place at UWE to study Physiotherapy. She said: “The access course has given me the skills needed to go to university. Before I never thought it’d be possible.

“As I’m older and have been out of education for a long time, the idea of writing an essay was really daunting! The Access Course has built up my skills and confidence in doing that.

“I completed an A-level in Biology when I was in college at 18 with a poor grade, as I found it so

difficult to wrap my head around the content, but the Access Course at Bath College has made it a lot easier to understand and I am now getting distinctions throughout science.”

The Access to Higher Education course is open to anyone 19 or older and lasts a year.

On the course, they study core subjects of English, Maths and study skills, together with subjects related to the degree choice.

Jasmine studied Psychology, Sociology and Biology alongside the core subjects. She gained a place to study Child’s nursing at Cardiff University.

She said: “Before I came on this course I had just come back from traveling a wide range of countries and before that I worked as a Toddler Room Leader at a Nursery, particularly working 1:1 with a little boy with disabilities.

“I am now looking forward to the fact in 3 years’ time I will be a qualified children’s nurse and be able to begin my dream job for life, helping young people.”

Bath College Principal, Laurel Penrose, is encouraging parents to study at the College because staff can support students: “We believe that by continuing in education and training and developing higher level skills,

you are putting yourself in a very strong position to improve your life chances. For some that will mean improving career prospects and for others it will mean expanding skills and knowledge.”

Samantha has a three-year-old son and took the Access course to become a midwife, something that she was nervous about juggling before starting.

She said: “Luckily, I have a very supportive family who will care for my son when I need time for my assignments.

“College help part-fund my son’s pre-school hours every week to ensure I can commit to college.

This means I have more time at college to do work and ensure I can attend all my lessons.

“The Access Course has really

helped boost my confidence, it’s supported me to receive offers from universities for competitive courses I would never have been able to achieve on my own.

“It’s also allowed me to improve my academic knowledge and set me up for university whilst making great supportive friends who are also going through the same process for their goals.”

Health £50,000 grant to benefit staff and patients at RUH STAFF and patients at the Royal United Hospital in Bath are set to benefit from a generous £50,000 grant from NHS Charities Together.

NHS Charities Together is the umbrella organisation of all NHS charities, which shot to prominence when Captain Sir Tom Moore raised more than £32 million for it.

The RUH’s charity The Forever Friends Appeal has received a grant of £50,000.

It will be used to provide mental health support, outdoor seating for staff and visitors and support for patients who are living with dementia.

Rhyannon Boyd, Head of Fundraising, The Forever Friends Appeal said: “We would like to thank the public who donated to the NHS Charities Together COVID-19 urgent appeal.

“Thanks to peoples’ generosity we can provide the immediate support and meet the practical needs of our staff and patients in

the weeks and months to come.

“Our frontline colleagues have been through a really demanding time. They’ve shown resilience, strength and spirit over the past few months, and now’s the time to give them the support they need to recover, take respite and prepare as we head towards winter.”

The mental health support will ensure teams that have been affected by COVID-19 are invited to attend debriefing sessions, called ‘Pause Days’.

These sessions will be run by psychological therapists and have proven to be effective in aiding mental health recovery following exposure to a period of time that has been traumatic and stressful.

Entertainment for patients living with dementia will now be funded – items such as DAB radios, Bluetooth speakers and listening devices for the hard of hearing will be provided, helping to reduce anxiety and loneliness

The funding will also be used to provide more outdoor seating so staff can sit, relax and reflect during busy shifts and teams can meet while social distancing.

to get together.

Rhyannon added: “The public’s generosity means that these fantastic projects are now being put in place for our staff and patients.

“We are still responding to the new challenges of COVID-19 and we continue to fundraise to provide the necessary support for our hospital.”

Musician to cycle 100 miles to fundraise for cancer research

Maternity app launched featuring useful info and advice

A LOCAL woman has organised an ambitious fundraising bike ride around Wiltshire after this year’s Prudential RideLondon was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Frankie Simpkins, 29, will be completing a 100-mile cycle around the county on Sunday 16th August, the day Prudential RideLondon was originally due to take place, to raise money for The Institute of Cancer Research, London.

Frankie, who’s been the Musician in Residence at Bath’s Royal United Hospital for the last eight years, chose to support The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) after several members of her family were diagnosed with the disease, including her auntie Gill who died from cancer a few years ago.

Frankie’s auntie Kate is also undergoing treatment for stage 4 bowel cancer, and the cycle ride will have extra significance for Frankie as she’ll be using Kate’s bike and kit to complete the challenge.

The ICR has seen a decline in research funding and was forced to put vital work on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As its scientists return to their laboratories, the charity has launched a major fundraising appeal to kick-start its research and help make up for the valuable time lost in discovering smarter, kinder and more effective cancer

NEW parents and pregnant women now have access to a wide range of useful information and advice at their fingertips, thanks to a new app launched by the Maternity team at the RUH. The new Maternity HANDi app aims to provide extensive maternity information for women who: • Are planning a pregnancy • Are pregnant • Are wanting to know more about labour • Have recently given birth Developed in partnership with Musgrove Park Hospital and maternity service users, the free app contains links to local and national information as well as guidance for women during pregnancy, labour and the early weeks following the birth.

The new app aims to answer many of the most frequently asked questions from new parents, including infant feeding and what to expect in labour.

It can also be used to find out where to obtain additional support.

The app provides information on antenatal and post-natal hospital appointments, as well as advice for women who have diabetes or a high BMI. Kirsty Watford, who is 28 weeks pregnant with her first baby, said: “The Maternity HANDi app is great to help guide you from planning a pregnancy through to

treatments.

The ICR is a world-leading research institute and discovers more new cancer drugs than any other academic centre in the world.

Frankie hopes her fundraising will help the charity accelerate its research as staff return to the laboratories.

ICR researchers have made significant progress in bowel cancer – most recently, they developed a test to genetically ‘barcode’ bowel cancer and separate it into five different diseases that could each receive tailored treatment. With further validation, the scientists hope the test will soon benefit NHS patients.

Frankie has already smashed her fundraising target and so far raised £861, but is working hard to reach £1,000.

Frankie said: “I turn 30 this year so I really wanted to do a big fundraiser, and it was actually my auntie Kate who suggested I do RideLondon as she’d done it in the past. I’m not a cyclist at all – the most I’d done in the past was a couple of miles and when I tried using the clip-on shoes I immediately fell off – so this is a huge challenge for me. IT may be helpful to recognise that grief is part of the process as we adjust to a new reality - and not just for those of us who have lost loved ones.

Grief is our natural response to any kind of loss - and we've lost a lot lately, from the ability to socialise or shop without anxiety to, perhaps, our very livelihoods, as well as our expectations for the future.

When we are bereaved, society steps in to give us something to do - arranging a funeral, settling the deceased person's affairs.

Relatives bond together and others offer help and sympathy; the instinct to connect with others helps repair our sense of security (which makes the current ban on getting and giving hugs particularly difficult to bear).

We saw a nationwide reflection of this process when lockdown started. It was like the initial shock of bereavement and many responded by offering each other help. In our communal response and support for frontline workers, we were like a bereaved family gathering together.

But, as anyone who has lost someone close knows, it can actually be harder to cope after the funeral. Difficult feelings flood back as the close knot of family and friends begins to loosen and we face living an altered life.

Similarly, with the initial lockdown past, we are effectively “going our separate ways" to deal with the aftermath of our loss and begin to construct our new reality in a changed world.

If we recognise that these adjustments involve processing grief - with the anger, lethargy, guilt, restlessness, anxiety or whatever else this can entail - we can perhaps be kinder to ourselves and others when it is feeling particularly hard.

Grief is such a painful experience, it's difficult to understand why we have to go through it.

Business Council criticised for not doing more to support businesses Cheryl Hughes

AFTER months of lockdown and no customers, many independent traders in Bath are struggling to catch up.

With a current, greatly diminished tourist industry, it also means less footfall is coming into the city and sales are greatly reduced.

Francesca Addabbo, one of the owners of The Real Italian Pizza and Ice Cream Companies and also Pink Art, said: “I have not had a day off since March 21st as we are trying everything to keep the businesses afloat. Times are so tough for us right now and there is a total lack of empathy from the council here in Bath.

“They don’t seem to understand the shortfall in our income and what that actually means for jobs.

Something is going to have to give.

“At the moment, we are expected to pay full rent for the months when we were in lockdown.

The council does not seem to realise that there will be a lot more problems for Bath if shops and businesses close.

They could make such a difference to us if they would offer some help with rent relief.

“We feel very abandoned by them and I personally feel really sad that people are in this situation through no fault of their own.

“Unfortunately, we have not been able to reopen our Pink Art shop as we can’t afford to and we will have to keep it closed for the

time being. The council has so far refused any sort of arrangement for us, even saying they will be adding interest charges on unpaid rent.

“If the council won’t engage with us, then there will be many empty premises and they will have no income from us at all. It’s very short-sighted.”

She added: “We have staff that we feel very responsible for and we really appreciate all that they do, they are our priority, and this is the same with other businesses too.

“A further nail in our coffin, is the fact the Bath Christmas Market is not opening this year. All we want is some recognition of what we are dealing with and a way forward with help from the council.”

Sally Marks, owner of French Grey, said: “I still have three years left on my lease, and I can’t see

me renewing it without some sort of help from the council now. I’d offer half price to the end of the year, but they don’t seem willing to look at that.

“What worries me after furlough ends, is it just might be easier to close and I would hate that to be the case. I have fabulous staff working for me and I have a duty to them. We are already offering 20% off everything, but are just getting a marginal profit.

Businesses can’t continue this way and that would be a real shame for Bath. I would hate to see the High Street disappearing.”

Owner of the Orange Grove Gift Shop, Fincho Gurung, like others in that area, is also dealing with the impact of the Abbey Church work, on top of falling sales due to lockdown.

She echoed the thoughts of many independent businesses, saying: “We have been asking for help and nobody has even been to talk to us to see if we are surviving.

“We’ve lost four to five months trading and it seems like they don’t care about us, nobody there is listening.”

She went further saying that: “I know that some private landlords have reduced rent payments, why can’t the council help us out? How long, in reality, can we continue like this?

“My gift shop helps promote and sell things produced by local people, what would that mean for some of them if I went out of business? The council is failing to see the importance of the independent traders in Bath.

They need to work with us, not

against us. These are very hard times and it scares me where we are going.”

In response, Councillor Richard Samuel, Cabinet Member for Resources, said: “We are acutely aware of the pressure many of our tenants are under so we have been looking at ways that we can help to add to the financial support already provided.

“Anymore we do will need to be carefully considered as we all strive to recover from the financial impact of Covid-19.

“Since the lockdown we have delivered more than £40m in Business Support Grants to more than 3,000 businesses. As a council we too face huge pressure on our budget which is why it is a fine balancing act.

“Our 2020/21 budget projected income from commercial properties is already expected to be down by up to £8m and we need to ensure losses do not increase above that figure.

“There are still businesses in Bath that have not accessed some of the schemes that are available to them.

We’ve had less than 100% not applying for the governmentbacked schemes.

“We are currently in the process of sending out letters to all council business tenants encouraging them to come forward as they need to access the money that maybe available to them.

“Some small businesses are in discussions with us already about how we can arrange rental payments. We too have to balance our books and have a duty to ensure other services are

maintained by us for the wider public.

“Everyone is concerned about what will happen when the chancellor ends the furlough scheme and what that means for people’s jobs, we are not excluded from that.”

Wera Hobhouse, Liberal Democrat member of parliament for Bath, said: "These are difficult times for so many businesses. I know that the Council is doing everything it can to support its tenants. It has distributed more than £40 million in direct grants to local businesses.

“The Government measures to support people have helped many, but this support has been inconsistent and, in some cases, incoherent. Certain sectors, such as barbers and hairdressers, have been allowed to re-open, while the others, like the beauty sector, has not been able to resume business. The Government must address this lack of consistency and give further support to local authorities so that they can more fully help the entire community, including businesses, during these challenging times."

COVID-19 pedestrianisation welcomed in Kingsmead Square BUSINESSES in and around Kingsmead Square are looking to the future as the area adapts to life post-lockdown following a number of improvements to the area.

Kingsmead Square is currently pedestrianised each day between 10am-6pm to allow additional space for social distancing measures, including the increase in outdoor seating areas for the range of independent restaurants and cafes.

Local business owners have welcomed the measures, and along with a return of the popular Kingsmead Square flower displays, are hoping that it will encourage people to return to this bustling corner of the city.

Square, has recently agreed a new 10-year lease with Society Café at number five.

As one of the most popular cafes in Bath and a fixture in Kingsmead Square for over five years, it’s positive news, and with only one empty unit remaining on Kingsmead Street, the future for local businesses is looking bright as people return to “normal life” over the summer.

Lindsay Holdoway, Managing Director of HPH Commercial Property, said: “It has undoubtedly been a very testing time since March and all businesses in Bath have faced many difficult challenges over the past few months with more still to come.

“However, it is very encouraging to see changes within and around

Kingsmead Square.

“The area is known for its wide range of independent businesses which create such a vibrant atmosphere in this part of the city, and the renewal of Society Café’s lease is a strong statement showing that businesses are able to be positive about their future in this part of the city.”

HPH has also agreed a new nine-year lease with IT training company Verhoef at 11 Kingsmead Square and is currently refurbishing the final office space remaining in the building ready for occupation in September.

Kingsmead Ward Councillor, Andy Furse, believes the Square is setting a strong example to the rest of the city as it rises to the various challenges presented by

Covid-19.

Mr Furse said: “Kingsmead Square is showing what can be done when businesses come together and work for the benefit of all.

“The popular fruit and veg stall managed to provide essential supplies throughout the lockdown period and there is a great sense of camaraderie in the

area, as businesses, independent retailers, restaurants and cafes strive to stimulate recovery.

“Kingsmead Square is open and ready for business. All visitors can rest assured that social distancing measures are in place to protect them – it’s a great time to rediscover the amazing range of businesses this part of Bath has to offer.”

Politics B&NES councillors pledge to tackle Projects set to share “deep-seated inequalities” £13.7m to “deliver a much-needed boost” Stephen Sumner

A RACE equality panel will be set up as part of efforts to tackle the “deep-seated inequalities” in Bath and North East Somerset.

In the wake of George Floyd’s death and the global Black Lives Matter movement that followed, the council has voted to stand in solidarity with protesters to challenge structural racism.

Members have recognised their own privilege and shared stories of when they and loved ones have been discriminated against.

Leading a motion at the full council meeting on 23rd July, Councillor Grant Johnson said: “We aren’t the most diverse authority in the UK and we use that as a way of not taking equality issues as seriously as we should.

“We need to stand up and support communities, no matter how small, and ensure they are not left behind.

“It’s really important we all stand together as a council on this.”

In a passionate speech seconding the motion, Cllr Dr Kumar, the council’s advocate for BME issues, said: “Racism remains a sinful aspect of our town and elsewhere and must be confronted.

“Many people are made to feel that they do not belong here.

Last year when helping my own residents and I was assaulted and told to ‘go back to your country’.

“Bath is our town, this is our country. Five years ago when I was with a Chinese friend a

woman shouted ‘go back, don’t make Bath another Leicester or Manchester’. Thirteen years ago my wife was discriminated against by a corporate conglomerate. I took them to court and they had to pay compensation for indirect racial discrimination.

“Bath is beautiful not only because of the colourful gardens and flowers but because of the colourful people it has.”

Cllr Shaun Stephenson-McGall told the meeting he grew up in Pakistan and when he returned to the UK he lived in a council house next to a family of Vietnamese boat people, who had come over after the Vietnam war.

He said: “I saw the inequality and the racism that people had towards them and it’s important that all of us in this council chamber become advocates and allies of people whose skin colour isn’t the same as our own.

“You don’t need to think of an

escape mechanism if the police speak to you if you’re white, but you do sometimes if the colour of your skin is different. All of us need to redouble our efforts.”

Cllr Eleanor Jackson described racism as an “insidious cancer eating away at our society” but said the hurt it can cause can be difficult for “white middle-class people like me” to understand.

Cllr Karen Warrington said she was married to an Egyptian and did not get interviews when she used his surname.

Cllr Paul Myers said: “Racism in any form is pernicious and abhorrent oppression and enslavement of minority or weaker groups has been prevalent throughout the centuries and sadly and shamefully it’s still evident across the globe today.

“Whilst we can’t change the entire world we can and must work together to play our part for residents and visitors."

NEW homes and office space, road and cycling improvements and a new railway station are all set to be developed more quickly thanks to new funding secured by West of England Mayor Tim Bowles.

The £13.7m funding, which will come through the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) and Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is from the Government’s Getting Building Fund to help complete major projects which are planned to stimulate jobs and support the region’s economic recovery.

West of England Mayor Tim Bowles said: “Through our economic recovery and renewal from Covid-19, I am accelerating my ambitious plans for the West of England.

“By securing this new funding from the Government, we are able to get these projects moving so they can make a real and tangible difference to our local communities.

“From starting the new station at the Portway Park and Ride to getting new homes and office space built in Bath Quays and backing the technologies of the future at the Bristol and Bath Science Park, I am taking every opportunity we can to get things done.”

The projects are anticipated to

improve connectivity across the region through significant transport works, investment in digital connectivity, bringing together academic research and economic sites, and regeneration to revitalise town centres and high streets.

The region has been allocated the funding for a wide-ranging package of projects that will deliver a much-needed boost to the local economy.

WECA will administer the money alongside Local Growth Fund investments made through the LEP. Chair of the West of England LEP, Professor Steve West, said: “As one of the most productive regions in the UK, the West of England is key to leading the national recovery.

“This latest funding from Government recognises the important role we play.

“We are working together to ensure that we rebuild on the strengths of our economy and we remain focused on our longerterm ambitions for clean growth that benefits every resident, as set out in our region’s Local Industrial Strategy.”

The funding will enable infrastructure and the reclamation of brownfield land for the development of new offices and creative workspaces at Bath Quays South.

Funding to provide new seats and improved river access KINGSMEAD residents will be able to enjoy improved access to the River Avon and make use of new seats while enjoying their surroundings thanks to funding from Bath & North East Somerset Council.

The improvement works at Norfolk Crescent Green are a joint project between Bristol and Bath Parks Foundation and the council’s Parks Service, who have worked with residents to find ways to improve this much loved green space.

The Bristol and Bath Parks Foundation aims to make parks better places for people to play, learn, grow, and really enjoy nature and this is the charity’s first project in Bath.

The council has part-funded the project with £4,200 S106 funding received from local developers, with additional funding put forward by local ward councillors.

Andrew Furse has contributed £1000.

The money will pay for three new seats on the Green, the creation of new steps on the riverbank and will create opportunities for local people to get involved with installing them.

Councillor Sue Craig (Kingsmead Ward), said: “This is a fantastic example of partnership working and will ensure that residents can reclaim the green and reap the benefits of this tranquil riverside space.

“It is a scheme which focuses on the needs of residents and they’ve helped shape our plans.

“In the longer-term we hope to make further improvements increasing the biodiversity of the green and improving the habitat for urban wildlife.”

Councillor Andrew Furse (Kingsmead Ward), added: “Getting outdoors and enjoying our open spaces has positive benefits for our physical and mental health.

“Many local residents live in flats with no outside space, so we

hope by improving access to the green and riverbank they’ll be able to make the most of this little oasis on their doorsteps.”

The improvement works, which are being carried out by volunteers, will get underway on Wednesday 26th August and should be completed by midSeptember.

Providing coronavirus restrictions allow, there will be a community launch day once the work is complete where local people can visit and test out the improvements and talk about future ideas for the space.

Charlee Bennett, Director of the Bristol and Bath Parks Foundation, said: “Lockdown has seen people relying heavily on their local park for daily exercise and to spend time in nature – they have been a real lifeline for many.

“Norfolk Crescent Green is a hidden gem with so much potential and we have really enjoyed speaking with the local residents to find ways to make it a better place to spend time.

Uni lecturer recognised with National Teaching Fellow award A SENIOR Lecturer in Physical Geography at Bath Spa University, has been named as a National Teaching Fellow by Advance HE in its prestigious 2020 Teaching Excellence Awards for Higher Education.

Dr David Simm is one of just 56 new National Teaching Fellows announced on the 20th anniversary of the scheme, which celebrates and recognises individuals who have made an outstanding impact on student outcomes, and the teaching profession in higher education.

With a high level of competition this year, judges commented that there was a particular drive for impact demonstrated in championing equality, diversity and inclusivity within approaches to curriculum design, teaching delivery and collaborative working.

David said: “I am immensely delighted and honoured to be one of the recipients of this year’s National Teaching Fellow awards.

“Throughout my career my teaching philosophy has focused on delivering innovative and effective ways of engaging students, in particular through fieldwork opportunities, such as those held internationally.

“By involving students in the design and delivery of their learning I’ve found that they achieve a greater sense of ownership of both their own and others’ learning, and develop mutual respect through shared

education experiences.

“This is also reflective of the wider commitment to innovative teaching approaches that can be found across Bath Spa.” Alison Johns, Advance HE CEO, added: “All of the winners should be extremely proud of their achievement of what are prestigious, national teaching awards.

“Their work epitomises the outstanding commitment to teaching in the UK higher education sector, which this year has been more demanding than ever before.

“Well done to each and every one of them.”

With 25 years of experience in higher education, David is an advocate for teaching and learning to be a dialogue between students and tutors.

His interests lie in developing co-production between students using borderland learning spaces.

Innovative teaching practice is at the heart of David’s work, from organising departmental conferences, to showcasing undergraduate research alongside staff and postgraduate talks, supporting the transition of students into and through university, and supporting international work placements.

As an expert in his field, David has shared his ideas and practices nationally and internationally in academic journals and presented at numerous conferences.

He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Geography in Higher Education, a Chartered Geographer (Royal Geographical Society) and a Senior Fellow.

The space forms part of the Bath Riverline Project which will see a 5km walking and cycling route created connecting the Bath Quays development with sites across the city.

The project involves upgrading the towpath, improving green spaces and parks, enhancing biodiversity, creating new areas of public space and an arts trail.

Wessex Water recognised for health and safety performance WESSEX Water’s engineering and sustainable delivery department has received an Industry Sector Award for the fourth time in five years at the RoSPA Health and Safety Awards.

The RoSPA Awards enable organisations to benchmark safety performance year on year, while also demonstrating an ongoing commitment to improving standards and procedures.

This year, Wessex Water achieved the Commended Sector Award for its proactive health and safety management systems, culture and overall performance.

In previous years, the water and sewerage company’s engineering and sustainable delivery department has also won the Industry Sector Award and Sir George Earle Trophy (2016), Industry Sector Award (2017) and Highly Commended Sector Award (2018).

Wessex Water’s continued success at the RoSPA awards places it in the top three construction companies for health and safety in the world.
