National Lottery funding for at-risk Beckford's Tower

£390k of heritage funding has been awarded to the Bath Preservation Trust BECKFORD’S Tower, which overlooks Bath from its location on Lansdown, has been awarded over £390,000 of National Lottery heritage funding to help conserve the site.

The initial financial support of £390,900 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund will be used by the Bath Preservation Trust (BPT) for their redevelopment project ‘Our

Tower’: Reconnecting Beckford’s Tower and Landscape for all.

The Bath Preservation Trust will use the funding to progress their plans to apply for a full National Lottery grant of £2.5m at a later date, to complete the project.

With funding made possible by National Lottery players, the extensive project aims to bring William Beckford’s complex and creative life to a wider audience by sharing stories of his writings

and collections, inherited slave wealth, sexuality and exile through a new visitor experience.

The project will also restore the architectural masterpiece of the Tower built for Beckford in 1826.

Beckford’s Tower is in urgent need of conservation, having been added to the National ‘At Risk’ Register in 2019.

In addition to addressing the conservation need and creating a new museum experience inside

the building, BPT’s project will also restore the Grotto Tunnel, improve access to the cemetery and create new footpaths, produce interpretation and trails for the lost Tower landscape and use renewable energy to illuminate the Tower for all to see and enjoy.

“Months" of work needed to repair historic balustrade knocked into the River Avon THE historic balustrade on Grand Parade in Bath is expected to take months to repair, after a collision involving a van shortly before Christmas.

Large parts of stone were knocked into the River Avon after an unattended van rolled back into it. The vehicle narrowly missed pedestrians on the pavement next to Pulteney Bridge, and stopped short of falling into the water.

The collision happened shortly after 4pm on Thursday 19th December. The driver had left the van on the opposite side of the road and had begun making a delivery when the vehicle started to move and rolled across Grand Parade into the historic balustrade.

Avon and Somerset Police said they were sent to the incident after being called by a witness who reported damage to the wall.

PCSOs were stationed at the scene to ensure the safety of the public, with B&NES Council working to erect barriers along the damaged section.

Police said they were making enquiries to establish whether any offences have been committed.

Councillor Joanna Wright, Bath & North East Somerset Council's joint cabinet member for Transport, said: “We are carrying out an assessment of the damage caused by the vehicle which struck the balustrade.

“Masonry will need to be recovered from the river and a specialist contractor brought in to carry out the repairs.

“We have put up barriers to make the area safe and would appeal for any witnesses to get in touch with the police.”

Mrs Wright told the BBC the cost of repairing the damage would be “significant" and is set to “take months" to complete.

"It's a Unesco World Heritage site. Bath needs to be looking at its best at all times because this is a prime spot for many tourists around the world to come and see this city. They all like to have their photographs taken literally where that balustrade has disappeared - and we've got to make sure it looks top notch."

Heritage funding for Beckford's Tower Continued from page 1 ... the local community will continue in 2020, with, if successful in securing the full National Lottery grant, major capital works in 2022.

The Bath Preservation Trust has said it will liaise closely with the Landmark Trust which manages a holiday apartment within the Tower, throughout the project.

Already an important Bath landmark familiar to residents and commuters alike, the aim of the substantial project is to inspire an appreciation for the story of William Beckford and his building, encouraging more people to explore and enjoy it and its landscape, establishing a communal sense that it is not just Beckford’s Tower, it is ‘Our Tower’.

Caroline Kay, Chief Executive of Bath Preservation Trust said: “We’re delighted that we’ve received this support thanks to National Lottery players. Grade I Beckford’s Tower is one of our most significant 1820s British buildings and its setting on an escarpment above Bath, with its bright golden lantern, has been admired by generations.

“It’s great to know that we are a step closer to preserving it for another century and connecting this national treasure to an even wider audience. It is now that the hard work can begin not least of fundraising for our share of the costs of the full project and securing the Tower’s future, for which we will aim to raise £1m.”

Council on top for stamping out blue badge fraud LATEST figures on the number of blue badge fraud prosecutions show that B&NES Council has brought the highest number of cases in the South West region, and ranks in 20th place nationally.

The figures published by the Department of Transport (DfT) last month show that of 1,432 prosecutions nationally against people using blue badges illegally, 92% were carried out by local authorities with 22 cases in Bath and North East Somerset.

The prosecutions were brought by the council and supported by Blue Badge Fraud Investigation (BBFI).

Councillor Joanna Wright, joint cabinet member for Transport Services, said: “The majority of Blue Badge holders are legitimate, but a minority play the system and attempt to use blue badges illegally.

“This results in fewer disabled parking bays being available for those who really need them.

“We are very proud of the work we do on this issue to reduce abuse of the vital service a blue badge provides and I’m pleased to hear that we leading the way in the South West.

“These prosecutions send a clear message to fraudsters that they risk going to court, receiving a

criminal record and a fine of up to £1000 if caught.”

Residents can apply for Blue Badges if they have a disability or health condition that affects their mobility. Parents of a child with a health condition that affects their mobility can also apply for a Blue Badge.

In addition, Blue Badge eligibility has recently been extended to people with hidden disabilities who: • Cannot undertake a journey

without there being a risk of serious harm to their health and safety or that of any other person (such as young children with autism) • Cannot undertake a journey without it causing them very considerable psychological distress • Have very considerable difficulty walking, (both the physical act and the experience of walking) However, there are strict rules in the use of Blue Badges: • Never use someone else’s

Over 300 runners take part in annual Santa & Elf Run event LOCAL charity Dorothy House Hospice Care’s 9th annual Santa & Elf Run on Sunday 8th December has been declared a great success, with 360 runners taking part.

The 2.5k or 5k run was open to all ages and was held at Bath Spa University for the second year.

Last year the fun run raised over £11,000 of vital funds to support the work of the Hospice and the charity is hoping to exceed this sum in 2019.

Hundreds of local people came to join in the fun and ran or walked the 2.5km or 5km route with adults dressed as Santa and children as Christmas Elves.

The race was open to the whole family and included rural footpaths, a castle, a lake, a garden temple and there was a Snow Station to run through in the scenic grounds.

The fun run started with a festive warm-up session run by Cheryl Sprinkler & Tony DiMonté from Mojo Moves.

Families, friends and supporters came to cheer the runners on and sprinkle biodegradable snow on them as they passed by so it was an event for everyone to enjoy.

Anyone who took part in the fun run can return their sponsorship or donation in lieu to help support patient care at Dorothy House Hospice Care until 8th February 2020 by contacting Emily.Knight@dorothyhouse-hospice.org.uk.

News in Brief Trial date set for 22-year-old accused of terror offences A 22-year-old man from Bath is to face trial in July over a number of offences including promoting and encouraging right-wing neo-Nazi terrorism.

Andrew Dymock appeared at the Old Bailey in London on Friday 3rd January. He has been granted conditional bail ahead of a plea and trial preparation hearing on 20th April. The trial date has been provisionally fixed for 6th July.

Dymock was arrested by counter-terror police in early December at an address on Weymouth Street in Bath. He was charged with five offences of encouraging terrorism, four offences of disseminating terrorist publications, two counts of terrorist fundraising, and one count of possessing material that is of use to a terrorist. Two other properties were also searched as part of the operation.

Plans to erect 5G mast Permission is being sought to replace a telephone mast in Charlcombe with a new 5G mast, which is 5 metres taller. Planning documents say the new tower will provide improved 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G coverage for the area.

Homeowners urged to take steps to avoid plumbing emergency WATERSAFE is encouraging homeowners across Bath to not only make sure they know where their internal stop tap is, but to make sure it’s working properly in case of a plumbing emergency.

The internal stop tap shuts off the water supply quickly if pipes freeze and burst in winter weather, reducing devastating damage to properties and the high cost of repairs.

However, a recent WaterSafe survey of 2,000 UK homeowners reveals that 63% don’t check where their stop tap is as part of their winter preparations.

Internal stop taps are most commonly found under the kitchen sink, but can also be in downstairs bathrooms, kitchen cupboards, garages, cellars and under the stairs. The UK plumbing register advises homeowners to check their stop tap regularly to make sure it’s working – around every six months for peace-ofmind.

Julie Spinks, director of WaterSafe, said: “Knowing the location of your internal stop tap is essential but it’s just as important to double-check that it won’t be stuck fast in an emergency.

“Taking the time to test it before colder weather sets in will give you peace-of-mind this winter. But take care – if you over tighten or use excessive force you may damage the stop tap.

“Talk to an approved plumber if you need help, just use the watersafe.org.uk postcode search to find one near you.”

Stop taps should be turned on and off slowly, and never forced.

If your stop tap is a screw-down type, turn it back half a turn after opening it fully to prevent it seizing. If it is a lever-type valve, always leave it fully open.

Student accommodation plans for Mini dealership site Stephen Sumner

A MINI dealership in Bath could be demolished to make way for two five-storey blocks to house nearly 300 students.

The Dick Lovett site on the Lower Bristol Road sits within the city’s flagship Western Riverside regeneration project to create a new residential quarter.

The firm is planning to level the Mini dealership, an office and a warehouse to build 290 studio and cluster student bedrooms, with 1,100sqm of retail space on the ground floor.

The plans say: “The application would provide a significant number of student bedrooms in a highly sustainable urban location. “The provision of purpose-built student accommodation in this location would potentially free up/limit the demand for larger family sized dwellings elsewhere in the city which are occupied by HMOs and thus help alleviate pressures on the existing housing market.

“As the proposed development does not include any on-site car parking provision, in line with the outline planning permission, it will have very limited impact on local traffic flows and any resulting addition of vehicular emissions.”

There would not be any car parking but there will be space for the students to store 145 bikes.

Bath and North East Somerset Council will decide the fate of the application.

The wider Western Riverside development will provide up to 2,281 homes, plus shops, restaurants and student accommodation.

Recycling team thanked Community being consulted on by police for helping future of Entry Hill Golf Course return £15,000 in cash STAFF at a Bath & North East Somerset Council recycling centre have been thanked by police after helping reunite £15,000 of cash with a couple from Burnham-on-Sea. In November, Avon and Somerset Police received a report from the Recycle for Bathnes depot in Midsomer Norton that they had found something unusual inside a cardboard box.

The staff members had been looking for an electrical cable at the time when they noticed the box, which was tucked away inside another box containing a household item, and were surprised at what they found inside.

Site CCTV was checked and the person who dumped the box was identified.

Police then captured details of the vehicle they were driving, by using the ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) cameras at the site. This showed the car was registered to a keeper in Burnham-on-Sea. Neighbourhood PCSOs went to the address and found the vehicle on the drive.

Officers spoke to the couple who lived there, who told them they had been in the Bath area clearing the house of a relative who

had recently passed away.

On their way back home, they said they had taken a number of bags and items to the recycling depot.

After the couple went to Radstock Police Station, it was agreed their account matched the property found.

Despite the fact they mentioned that the relative was known to hide money around the house in unusual places, they were aghast to hear the details of the find – £15,000 in cash.

In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police said: “We would like to say a big thank you to the staff at the recycling centre.

“Without their diligent attitude, integrity and assistance, the family would never have known about the money found, and we would not have been able to return it to them, especially in time for Christmas.”

A post on social media by Bath & North East Somerset Council said: “We are proud of our waste and recycling teams who work hard all year round and this is a lovely example of their diligence and professionalism.

“Our eagle-eyed member of staff who spotted the money is currently having a well-deserved Christmas break.”

BATH & North East Somerset Council is seeking local residents’ views on the kind of community provision they would most enjoy having at the Entry Hill Golf Course site in Bath.

A consultation has been launched to welcome opinions on a range of options, including an urban mountain bike park, a community growing space, outdoor education or continuing to provide a golf course.

Use of Entry Hill golf course has declined over the past few years and the council is keen to look at other ways of using the site which would attract a larger number of people and have wider health benefits for the local community.

The final decision about its future would also need to be in line with the council’s climate emergency declaration, to help meet its goal

to achieve carbon neutrality for Bath by 2030.

Councillor Paul Crossley, cabinet member for Community Services, said: “Entry Hill is an important community location and is valuable in terms of its heritage and ecology, but its use as a golf course has been in decline in recent years as people’s sporting choices change over time.

“We’d like to see more people making use of the site for leisure activities in the open air, which is vital to health and wellbeing.

“We are exploring the potential for alternative uses and therefore encourage ideas from the community about the future of Entry Hill.

“The options we have laid out are not an exhaustive list, so we are keen to hear more suggestions from residents about what is im-

portant to them before any decision is made.”

Entry Hill golf course is currently operated by Greenwich Leisure Ltd (GLL) on behalf of the council.

Any change of use for the site may require a full planning application.

The council, through GLL, will continue to operate the Approach Golf Course in the Royal Victoria Park.

‘No questions asked’ book amnesty being held across B&NES

PEOPLE in Bath and North East Somerset who hold very overdue library books are being invited to take them back without penalty and enjoy their local library once again.

The council removed fines for the late return of books in April 2019, but is now inviting anyone who still has books borrowed before that date to return them from 6th January as part of a book amnesty.

Books can be returned to the main libraries in Bath, Keynsham and Midsomer Norton or at one of the community-run libraries, and old fines will be deleted.

People who think they have lost a very overdue book should talk to library staff who can remove it, and any fines, from their account and people will then be able to use the libraries as normal.

Councillor Paul Crossley, cabinet member for Community Services, said: “We welcome everyone to our wonderful libraries and we don’t want anyone to have a

barrier to enjoying the books and other services we have on offer.

“Anyone who borrowed a book before April 2019 and hasn’t been able to return it is encouraged to bring it back to us no questions asked and without having to pay a fine.

“Please don’t be embarrassed if you’ve had a book for a long time and it’s gone missing – we’d rather know about it and be able to replace it than have people not come back to the libraries at all.

“Come and talk to our friendly staff and see what’s new at your local library since your last visit.”

Book returns of this nature are being welcomed from 6th January onwards.

The council is only able to remove fines for books borrowed from its own libraries or for books it owns, not books borrowed from other libraries which are part of the Libraries West offering. Accounts that have previously been frozen because fines had reached £10 can also be made active again.

Amy Williams joins Dame Kelly Holmes Trust as first Ambassador

THE Dame Kelly Holmes Trust has announced that Olympic gold medallist Amy Williams has joined them in the newly formed role of Ambassador.

Bath-based Amy will become the Trust’s first Ambassador and will assist President Col Dame Kelly Holmes in helping to raise the profile of the charity’s work and support the launch of partnerships in new locations.

Dame Kelly said: “I’m really pleased to welcome Amy to the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust family.

Amy’s Winter Olympic triumph in 2010 united the nation and I’m sure that she will have a similar effect on the Trust.

“We are now a UK wide charity

working with over 1,000 young people a year and I look forward to working with Amy to help us help even more harder to reach young people in the year ahead.”

Amy added: “I’m really excited to have the opportunity to become an Ambassador for the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust.

“I have admired Kelly as an athlete and also her charity work for years so it’s a great honour to be asked to become an Ambassador.

“I’ve already seen at first hand the impact of the young people programmes the Trust runs and I’m looking forward to working closely with Kelly and the team over the year ahead.

“As an ex-athlete myself, I know

the impact athletes can have on young people through mentoring programmes such as Get on Track and On Track to Achieve and I can’t wait to get involved.”

As well as working to raise the profile of the charity, Amy will also be available to offer advice and support to fifty newly retired athletes over the next two years who will be joining the Trust’s More than Medals athlete transitioning programme, starting in winter 2019.

The athletes will support young people programmes and, in addition to training from the Trust, will be studying at the University of Bath to achieve an ILM Level 5 coaching award.

Call for residents across city to help tackle climate emergency

B&NES COUNCIL is calling for residents to consider putting a reduction in home carbon emissions at the top of their New Year’s resolution list and play their part in tackling the climate emergency.

The first stage of the council’s research after declaring a climate emergency in March has identified energy use in buildings as one of the three priority areas for action, with 38% of emissions coming from people’s homes.

If residents are looking to improve the energy efficiency of their homes, such as through draft-proofing or installing solar panels, support and low-cost loans are available from the council and its energy project partners.

AVON and Somerset Police have released a number of CCTV images as part of an appeal to identify a man they want to speak to in connection with an assault.

Officers want to speak to him as part of their investigation into an assault which left a 31-year-old man needing stitches for cuts to his head and face.

The attack happened at a takeaway in Saw Close in Bath at around 3.10am on Sunday 8th December.

A man was involved in an altercation with staff.

Another customer tried to intervene and was hit over the head with a bottle.

The suspect is described as a tall black man in his 20s, bearded and wearing black clothing.

There were a number of people in the area at the time.

Officers are keen to hear from an-

Locals urged to help stop the spread of Norovirus bug in hospitals and care homes PEOPLE living in Bath and North East Somerset are being urged to help stop the spread of Norovirus this new year in a bid to relieve pressure on the area’s hospitals and health services.

Norovirus – often referred to as the winter vomiting bug – is a very unpleasant and highly contagious stomach bug that causes diarrhoea and vomiting.

It has closed numerous beds in hospitals across the region and local health leaders are appealing to the public to play their part in stopping the spread of the condition by following some simple steps.

Please don’t visits to hospitals, care homes, nursing homes and GP surgeries if you are suffering from symptoms of Norovirus (diarrhoea and vomiting) – send someone else to visit loved ones until you are better.

Once you’ve been symptom-free for at least 48 hours, you’re safe to return to work, school or visit hospitals, GP surgeries and care homes and nursing homes.

Regularly wash your hands with soap and warm water, especially after using the toilet, and before eating or preparing food.

Only hand-washing will prevent spread of norovirus – alcohol hand gels don’t kill the virus.

Self-treating at home is the best way to help yourself and avoid putting others at risk. You don’t

If you’re concerned, the NHS 111 phone or online service is a helpful alternative to going to your GP in person for advice.

Health leaders are also urging the public to only visit hospitals over the new year period if it is absolutely necessary.

They are asking local people to use the NHS 111 service if they have an urgent medical problem and are not sure what to do.

The service is free to call and open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is staffed by fully-trained advisers on the phone, who will advise which local service can offer help and get a face-to-face appointment if needed.

“They are already under serious pressure. Instead, stay at home, drink plenty of water, wash your hands regularly with soap and water and wait at least 48 hours after symptoms have gone before returning to work.”

British Heart Foundation seeks gift donations THE British Heart Foundation is appealing to those left disappointed by their Christmas presents to donate unwanted gifts to them, to help beat the heartbreak caused by heart and circulatory diseases.

While it’s the thought that counts, it wouldn’t be Christmas without some gifts that miss the mark.

But, rather than throwing these items away, the BHF is appealing for quality donations to help support the charity’s vital work and save unwanted items from landfill.

“We love the gifts you don’t!” said Allison Swaine-Hughes, Retail Director at the British Heart Foundation.

“Our shops will welcome everything from good quality clothes, shoes, handbags and

jewellery to DVDs, CDs, books and children’s toys.

“Electrical items can also be donated to one of our 180 furniture and electrical stores, so think of us when re-gifting that blender or coffee machine.

“If you want to donate a gift or cut down the clutter after the festive season, then just drop your donations in at your local BHF shop or take advantage of our free collection service.

“Your quality items will be saved from landfill and help us raise funds for vital research into heart and circulatory diseases.”

CCTV appeal after high-value Ofsted praise for care engagement ring stolen from couple leaver support AVON and Somerset Police are appealing for help from the public to identify two men after a high-value diamond ring was stolen from an apartment in Bath.

Officers want help to identify the two men in the CCTV images in connection with the theft.

The ring belonged to a 29-yearold man visiting Bath from Thailand, who’d planned to propose to his girlfriend on the trip.

Two men entered the premises, a holiday let in New King Street, at about 3.20pm on Monday 9th December and stole the ring which was in a brown box, along with a Gucci scarf, men’s brogue shoes, wireless headphones and a passport.

Police believe the items were carried out of the property in the victim’s Gucci holdall.

IMPROVEMENTS to the services provided for care leavers in Bath and North East Somerset have been highlighted during a visit to Children’s Services by Ofsted in November.

The support the council provides to young people as they move from care into independent adulthood was the subject of a focussed visit from the education and skills inspection body, which found that ‘the local offer is comprehensive, accessible and ambitious and its impact is tangible.’

After a ‘Good’ rating during a full Ofsted inspection in 2017 and a positive feedback letter from an inspection of local services for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities earlier in 2019, the latest visit report letter confirms that improvements have been made since Ofsted last looked at these services.

Ofsted also noted a ‘clear corporate and political commitment to improving the service, that is informed by the views and experiences of young people’, ‘young

people appreciate the level of passion and dedication displayed by workers’ and that ‘young people’s physical and emotional health are well catered for’.

Councillor Kevin Guy, cabinet member for Children’s Services, said: “It is hugely positive to see the recognition of the level of commitment to our young people throughout the organisation, but it is also heartening to see that inspectors found from talking to staff that morale is high and staff have ready access to supportive managers who know the young people well. We are never complacent and we will be building the latest findings into our improvement plan going forward.”

Some areas for further improvement identified by inspectors included ensuring that assessments and plans are timely and up-to-date and further improving managers’ use of performance information and audit. The visit report letter can be viewed at: https://files.ofsted.gov.uk/v1/ file/50135441.

Aspiring firefighters wanted as fire service opens recruitment PEOPLE across the local community are being encouraged to consider Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) as it begins the search for the brightest and best to join as wholetime firefighters.

‘Yes You Can’ is the message being shared as the Service looks to welcome applications from across the diverse local area, including female and BAME applicants reflective of the community.

From this month, potential applicants from B&NES, Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset will be invited to learn more about the Service and what it really means to be a modern, inclusive and ambitious wholetime firefighter.

Applications will then open in March, with those who are successful undertaking practical tests with the Service’s training school later in 2020.

Simon Shilton, Assistant Chief Fire Officer for AF&RS, said: “A career in the fire service is exciting, often challenging, always varied and entirely rewarding.

Liam Bamford previously worked as a team leader for G4S Cash Solutions and had applied twice before, both of which were unsuccessful.

But his sheer determination meant he eventually did pass the application process.

Liam, who has since become a fully qualified firefighter with White Watch at Temple Fire Station in Bristol, said: “Joining Avon Fire & Rescue Service has fulfilled one of my life long ambitions and I can’t wait to begin progressing my career.”

After getting a law degree, Steph Ford was working in an office when she decided an office-based job wasn’t for her.

She has now been in the Service for over two years and is currently based at Yate Fire Station.

Speaking about the application process, Steph said: “I know that females have struggled in past recruitment phases with strength and fitness, but you’ve got enough time to sort that out.

“If you are thinking about joining and if you are serious about joining, then just put the work in.”

Watch Manager Paul Kirk joined the Service back in 2000.

Speaking about his time with AF&RS, Paul said: “It was very important for me to start a career where I had the opportunity to progress and in the fire service you can progress up the ranks if you choose to and if you don’t you can stay as a firefighter and take on specialist responsibilities

or additional roles.

“I would say to anyone who was thinking about joining the fire service that it’s a very interesting career, no two days are the same.”

Over the coming months AF&RS will be hosting a number of recruitment awareness events, which are scheduled to take place throughout February.

Education Climate emergency network to link local schools A NEW network of schools taking collective action to help tackle the climate emergency has been launched in Bath and North East Somerset, and the council is calling on more schools to sign up.

The B&NES Schools Climate Emergency Network’s first meeting was attended by representatives from more than half of all of the schools in the district, including primary and secondary schools from both the state maintained and independent sector.

The Network has been set up by members of Family Action on Climate Emergency (FACE), Councillor Tom Davies, Bursar of Monkton Combe School and Jo Marsh of the Palladian Academy Trust, in response to the council’s Climate Emergency declaration in March.

The network has written a Schools Climate Emergency Declaration template for schools who want to show their commitment to the issue by making their own declarations and a number of schools are already in the process of doing so.

The first meeting also discussed the council’s initial climate

emergency priorities, which are increasing renewable energy generation, a major shift to public transport, walking and cycling and making new and old buildings as energy-efficient as possible.

There were also presentations from three projects that schools can take part in right now, that align with each of the priority areas including the Energy Sparks energy monitoring programme, Mode Shift Stars school travel scheme, and Bath & West Community Energy’s search for new solar roof sites.

Councillor Sarah Warren, cabinet member for Climate Emergency, said: “It’s brilliant to see schools proactively pushing for collective action in response to the climate emergency that we declared in March.

“We applaud the creation of this network as we recognise the crucial role schools have to play in community leadership as well as education.

“I look forward to continuing to support the network and would strongly encourage other schools to join in and play their part in tackling the climate emergency.”

Bath Spa University Professor awarded OBE ALLYSON MacVean, Professor of Policing and Criminology and Co-Director of Bath Spa University’s Centre for Leadership, Ethics and Professional Practice, has been awarded an OBE. Professor MacVean was named in the full New Year Honours list, which recognises the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom.

Allyson, who has been awarded an OBE for services to ethics in policing, began her career in the Serious and Organised Crime Unit at the Home Office with a special focus on intelligence, covert policing and ethics in operational practice.

For the last five years, she has been working with police forces in England, Wales and Scotland to develop ethics committees at a local, regional and national level.

Through her work, Professor Macvean was approached by the Royal Marines to help reestablish ethical culture and training.

This led to a commission from the Vice-Admiral of the Royal Navy for her to scrutinise the culture, ethical climate, ethical awareness and ethical leadership across the five Fighting Arms of the Naval Service.

She also currently chairs the submissions of ethical dilemmas at the UK Police Ethics Group.

Professor MacVean said: “I am extremely surprised and humbled at being awarded such an honour. What has been achieved in terms of policing has very much been a team effort.

“To attain such a remarkable feat takes more than one person and I share this accolade with those

police officers I have worked with. Bath Spa University, and particularly Dr Mark Loon, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Research and Enterprise, has been incredibly supportive of my work with both the police and Naval Service. I am proud to say that we are the forefront leaders

in this subject matter and our Centre for Leadership, Ethics and Professional Practice is driving the way for operationally applied ethics and leadership for the police and the military.

“I look forward to taking our research further in 2020 and beyond.”

News in Brief Exceptional teachers recognised by university Inspirational teachers who provide exceptional guidance and support to students on their journey to university have been recognised by the University of Bath.

The Teacher Awards evening was part of a broader event to recognise the contribution and impact of the university’s Widening Participation programmes, which support students from under-represented groups into university.

Almost 200 people attended to celebrate students who had completed some of the University’s Widening Participation programmes, which include On Track to Bath, Pathway to Bath and Discover Bath.

Many of those attending will now apply to universities, including Bath. All the schemes are designed to support students in developing their skills for university study, with the students demonstrating great dedication to complete them alongside study for their A-Levels, or equivalent qualifications.

Four outstanding teachers who were nominated by their students each received a trophy and £500 for their school’s professional development budget.

Mike Nicholson, Director of Admissions and Outreach at the University of Bath, said: “The unifying theme among those who were nominated and shortlisted was the very clear sense from the students that these teachers made such a huge difference to their confidence and to their onward progression.

“We want to recognise the very significant efforts that teachers make in supporting students taking the next step in their lives.

“As a first generation student going to university myself I can remember my history teacher just made the subject come alive, and I certainly wouldn’t have considered going to university without that inspiration at the age of 14.

“Congratulations to all of our winners and nominated teachers who do so much for their students.” The event also heard from Jakub Przybylowski who attended Clarendon Academy in Trowbridge, and was part of the very first On Track to Bath scheme.

He went on to study Chemistry with Drug Discovery at the University of Bath and has just started a PhD there.

He said: “On Track to Bath was an excellent opportunity to try something new and helped me develop practical skills, research skills and my confidence ahead of university applications." By completing access schemes like On Track to Bath, students learn crucial skills that will benefit them in university study, and can receive a revised offer from the university to attend."

Student brings special washing machines to refugee camps FIFTY new low-cost washing machines designed by a University of Bath student have been installed at a refugee camp in Northern Iraq.

Created to alleviate the burden of hand-washing clothes for displaced people, the arrival of the ‘Divya’ hand-cranked machines from the UK in Iraq will mark a milestone for ‘The Washing Machine Project’.

A social enterprise, ‘The Washing Machine Project’ is the brainchild of University of Bath MSc Humanitarianism, Conflict & Development student, Nav Sawhney – an engineer by background who now uses his design skills to help families living on the margins.

Against a backdrop of rare or intermittent supplies of both electricity and water, Nav’s manual-drive washing machine was inspired by the back-breaking stories he heard of families living in refugee camps struggling to hand-wash clothes, which can take individuals more than 12 hours a week.

Not only is hand washing extremely time consuming, it also adds to the burden of unpaid domestic work and can lead to chronic back and joint pain.

The Divya washing machine takes its inspiration and name from the woman in Southern India who first sparked the idea.

She explained to Nav how a washing machine like this would transform her life. Now, the longterm hope is that increasing ac-

cess to Divya washing machines could free up time for women, and young girls in particular, to pursue education.

The Divya has a drum capacity of 5kg but only uses 10 litres of water per cycle, as opposed to the 30 litres used by the average electric washing machine.

This is crucial in water-scarce humanitarian settings like refugee camps. Powered by crank-handle, the Divya does not have to rely on an electricity supply.

Having partnered with the Iraq Response Innovation Lab and Oxfam, ‘The Washing Machine Project’ team have installed 50 Divyas to help families in camps of displaced people in Kurdish and Federal Iraq.

Nav Sawhey explained: ‘Since The Washing Machine Project’s formation in 2018, we have travelled to five countries and interviewed 500 families on their clothes washing habits, and strived to keep future users at the heart of everything we do.

“The worst thing for us would be to produce something that no one uses, which is why we spend so much time with our beneficiaries.

“Our team has also grown to include dedicated volunteer professionals with skills and expertise in NGOs (non-governmental organisations), communications, data science, engineering and organisational development.

“In March 2019, we were lucky enough to be invited out to Kurd-

ish Iraq by Care International, where we conducted a week-long field trial with two of our prototypes with 79 families in five IDP camps.

“The feedback was over whelmingly positive and we were given some useful direction on how we could further improve our design.

“We have developed partnerships with large international NGOs and a funding pipeline.

“What drives us forward is a common goal to make the world a better place with the skills we have. The exciting thing is that we’re only just getting started.”

Dr Oliver Walton, Director of Studies for the MSc in Humanitarianism, Conflict and Development at the University of Bath, added: “We have been really excited to follow the progress of Nav’s project since he started his Master’s degree here.

“As an engineer who has been able to apply his technical skills to a humanitarian setting, Nav’s experience really encapsulates what we are trying to achieve with this course. We want to provide students with in-depth knowledge and skills to work

in humanitarian settings and build strong networks of people from varied backgrounds with a shared passion for working in the field of conflict and humanitarian response.

“Another great feature of The Washing Machine Project is the fact that it has been able to draw on a number of other students on the course who are already skilled practitioners, while also providing volunteering opportunities to students with less experience.”

Response Innovation Lab Manager in Iraq, Nathalie Rami, who has been instrumental in getting the project off the ground, said: ‘The Iraq Response Innovation

Lab is very pleased to provide seed funding to The Washing Machine Project and support young entrepreneurs bringing innovative solutions to the humanitarian sector. The Washing Machine Pilot project is likely to improve the life of displaced women and girls affected by crisis in Iraq.”

Bath College opens SEND Centre thanks to £300k investment BATH College has opened a new Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Centre, Wellow House, which houses a whole range of state-of-the-art facilities for those with learning difficulties.

The centre includes a sensory room, a de-escalation calming room, an accessible kitchen and a fully operational one-bedroomed flat.

Wellow House is at Bath College’s Somer Valley Campus in Radstock and has had a £300,000 investment from B&NES Council.

The new facility has allowed the College to welcome a cohort of pre-entry level learners with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD).

These learners follow a curriculum designed around Pathways for Adulthood and making good choices for their lives.

This new programme is an addition to the College’s successful Life and Independent Living Skills (LILS) programme, designed for 16-25-year-old learners with SEND. Wellow House has attracted attention in Somerset, with the

Glastonbury Festival stewards raising £740, which was used to purchase items for the sensory room such as bean bags and weighted blankets.

There are exciting plans for the future of the centre, which include a café, market garden and on-site residence.

The launch was also the LILS and Pre-entry students’ annual Christmas fair, for which they prepared hampers, cakes and soup, a raffle, homemade chutneys, gifts and games for the visitors of the facility to purchase.

The learners will spend the proceeds on a small reward for themselves for their hard work, donating the rest to CLIC Sargent, a charity that has helped many of them through cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Carole Stott, Chair of Governors at Bath College, officially opened the SEND Centre with a ceremonial ribbon after the students welcomed guests by signing and singing Christmas songs.

Health Stella McCartney bra Bath Rugby players deliver gifts to donation helps support children spending time at RUH breast cancer patients

A DONATION of 200 specially-designed bras from the fashion designer Stella McCartney has been made to the Royal United Hospital in Bath for women who have undergone breast surgery.

Made from organic cotton, the post-surgery bras are comfortable and supportive and are a particularly good fit for women with prosthetics.

The bra is aimed primarily at women who have undergone a mastectomy as part of their treatment, but is also suitable for anyone who has had surgery for breast cancer.

The bra is made from ultra-soft cotton and cotton lace, with a soft, flexible under-band and front and back fastenings.

It includes ultra-soft internal pockets for use with prosthesis, wide, adjustable straps, and an extended size range.

The RUH was one of just a handful of hospitals to be given the bras, which are now being offered to patients by the RUH’s team of Breast Care Nurses.

Breast Care Nurse Catherine Brown said: “We’ve just started to give the bras out to our patients, but the feedback we’ve had has been very positive – the women have said how comfortable they are to wear, that they are easy to look after, and feel very feminine.

“These bras are a very generous donation and will help to make our patients feel comfortable and more confident as they complete their journey to recovery.”

Patient Pam Stoate was one of the first patients to receive one of the bras following a mastectomy in November.

She said: “Catherine gave me the bra on the day of my operation and I thought it was a lovely ges-

ture. It was a real boost to know I was being thought about and it made me feel really well looked after.

“The bras have been extremely well designed. The front opening is very thoughtful and practical and the broad straps are comfortable and easily adjustable – ideal when you recovering after an operation and are still sore and in some discomfort.

“This was my second bout of cancer and the RUH has seen me through both.

“I can’t fault the care and support I’ve received.”

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK and will affect around one in 10 women during their life.

It can now be treated very effectively and most women who develop breast cancer will be permanently cured following treatment.

However, they will need regular breast cancer surveillance with mammography.

Over 6,000 women are referred to the RUH Breast Unit every year, about 400 of these will be diagnosed with cancer.

The vast majority of patients are women, but the unit also sees men with breast problems, two or three of whom will have breast cancer.

The RUH Breast Unit has one of the most up-to-date facilities in the South West of England. It provides an integrated range of services for patients with breast problems, including rapid access diagnostic clinics by a team of dedicated specialists.

It has state of the art breast imaging equipment and is one of the very few trusts in the region with digital mammography, breast tomosynthesis and breast MRI.

YOUNGSTERS taking part in a Bath Rugby Foundation programme teamed up with Bath Rugby stars to put smiles on the faces of children stuck in hospital this Christmas.

The group of teenagers who are taking part in the National Citizenship Service (NCS) programme decided to set up a Christmas toy collection – The Joy of Giving – and donate the toys to children who are spending the festive period in Bath’s RUH. The NCS group had some extra help from Bath Rugby’s players and coaches in handing over the gifts in the Children’s Ward after Bath Rugby Foundation linked up with the Forever Friends Appeal, the RUH’s official charity.

The NCS programme has been led by Bath Rugby Foundation Senior Coach, Becks Toan.

She said: “The NCS course has seen the teenagers take on a number of challenges over the past few months, including a challenge to create a community of charity event.

“They chose to help children who are having a tough time at Christmas, which just shows what a generous group of young adults they are.

“Once the Joy of Giving was created and word spread we had wonderful support from the public in Bath, with many people arriving

at our office with gifts, and businesses such as Cow Parsley, The Entertainer and M&S who invited us into their stores to collect incredibly generous donations.”

Bath Rugby players and coaches played the role of Santa’s elves and handed over the presents at the RUH. Bath Rugby’s Director of Rugby, Stuart Hooper, said: “We were delighted to be able to help Bath Rugby Foundation deliver the gifts and it was lovely to see so many happy faces.

“It’s tough to be in hospital during the festive season and hopefully Bath Rugby and Bath Rugby Foundation have spread a little extra Christmas joy.”

Club captain, Charlie Ewels, said: “As a club we are very proud of the life-changing work Bath Rugby Foundation do in our city.

“It is wonderful that this idea came from the young people themselves and as a club we are delighted to be involved.”

RUH Play Specialist Jo Powell added: “We’re really grateful to Bath Rugby Foundation for their generous gifts and to the players who gave their time to visit the children. Entertainment and play is a crucial part of the care we offer our young patients, helping them during their time in hospital and in their recovery. Thank you for brightening their day.”

University brings world-leading skin disorder experts to the city SCIENTISTS on the cutting edge of skin research gathered in Bath last week to discuss research breakthroughs on skin disorders ranging from eczema and fungal infections to skin cancer.

The Skin@Bath Network Symposium was hosted by three leading Bath institutions – the University of Bath, the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Trust Foundation (RUH) and the Bath Institute for Rheumatic Diseases (BIRD).

It attracted 129 skin experts from around the world, including researchers from around Europe and a delegation of eight scientists from China, representing three major Chinese universities.

Dr Charareh Pourzand, researcher from the university’s Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, and joint organiser of the event, said: “The symposium was a great success – everyone was very engaged. Our aim was to introduce Bath as a centre of excellence for the research into, and treatment of, skin disease.

“We want to foster strong collaborations with top clinical

and non-clinical researchers in academia and healthcare from around the world. Ultimately, the symposium was about experts sharing information, stimulating novel research ideas and translating this into state-of-the-art therapies.

She added: “Our main emphasis is on meeting the current needs of patients.”

Dr Pourzand, who has won acclaim for her work on a suncream compound that can reverse cell damage after over-exposure to the sun’s UVA rays, says she is confident the conference will lead to high-profile science collaborations among participants.

By raising the profile of research into skin disorders, she also hopes to attract new research grants, along with partnerships with pharmaceutical companies sharing her interest in tackling skin disease.

“There are a lot of disorders that are not addressed or curable at present,” said Dr Pourzand. “We want to change that.”

“There are many possibilities that may develop over time from the symposium.

“New and developing collaborations between specialities, disciplines, institutions, regions and countries are possible.”

Celia Mead, executive director of BIRD, said: “BIRD supports arthritis research, education and patient engagement in research.

So we are delighted to support, facilitate and underwrite this symposium, which covers psoriatic arthritis in particular and collaboration between academics and clinicians in general.”

New Independent Chair Mineral Water Hospital history appointed to lead local makes its way to Combe Park site health and care system HEALTH and care leaders from Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire (BSW) Sustainability and Transformation Partnership have appointed a new Independent Chair.

Stephanie Elsy, a Non-Executive Director at Solent Community and Mental Health Trust and former Leader of Southwark Council in London, joined the B&NES, Swindon and Wiltshire Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) earlier this month.

She will provide independent leadership and work to oversee the ongoing improvement and integration of health and care services across the region.

She will also help to deliver the ambitions set out in B&NES, Swindon and Wiltshire’s Five Year Plan – which will be published early next year – and provide support to the partnership as it develops into an Integrated Care System (ICS) by April 2021.

Integrated Care Systems are NHS organisations working in partnership with local councils and others to take collective responsibility for managing resources, delivering NHS standards and improving the health of the population they serve.

Stephanie said: “I am delighted to be given the opportunity to work with health and care leaders across BSW during such an exciting time.

“Our local health and care system is under considerable pressure and it is now more important than ever before that we work in a seamlessly integrated manner to improve service quality, improve the health and wellbeing of our

local population and deliver financial stability.”

Tracey Cox, Chief Executive Officer of Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire CCGs and STP Senior Responsible Officer added: “Appointing Stephanie as an Independent Chair is a significant step forwards for BSW. “She will play a central role in holding the system to account for delivering positive change, promoting joint working, securing the support of the boards and staff of all of our partners and ensuring the public are engaged and well informed.”

Stephanie has worked in the delivery of public services for over 30 years. She was a CEO in the charity sector for 15 years managing community and residential services for people recovering from substance misuse, people with disabilities and people living with HIV and AIDS. She has also worked in local politics as a councillor in the London Borough of Southwark in 1995, becoming Chair of Education in 1998 and then Leader of the Council in 1999.

After retiring from local government in 2002 Stephanie served on the Board of Southwark Primary Care Trust.

She then worked for eight years as a Director of External Affairs for Serco Group. Since 2012 she has run a consultancy providing support to businesses delivering services to government.

In 2017, she became a NonExecutive Director on the Board of Solent NHS Trust where she now Chairs the Finance and the Community Engagement Committee.

A HEAVYWEIGHT piece of Mineral Water Hospital history, a life-size sculpture of Ralph Allen, has been lifted and moved to its new home at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

Ralph Allen donated all the stone to build the Mineral Water Hospital, known as the Min, from his mines on the outskirts of Bath in 1738.

His bust, carved in marble on a marble plinth, has stood in the hospital for more than 250 years.

But, with the sale of the Min, full name the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, he had to be moved, and that proved a mighty task.

Hetty Dupays, RUH Art and Design manager, said: “The bust and plinth weighed more than half a ton, so our expert art removers had to bring in special lifting gear.

“It was a delicate job and took a lot of time, and we’re really pleased that Ralph Allen has now joined us at the RUH.” The statue now stands in the reception area of the new RNHRD and Brownsword Therapies Centre, which also houses a collection of historic artwork and artefacts from the Min. Other items of historic interest from the Min are held by the charity the Bath Medical Museum. All services previously housed at the Min have now transferred to the new RNHRD Centre and to other locations on the RUH site. The last, the Bath Centre for Pain Services (BCPS), moved in December and is now housed in an extended and refurbished former residential building, Bernard Ireland House.

It provides specially-designed residential accommodation, group treatment areas including therapy and group rooms, office

space and, in the spring next year, a dedicated therapeutic courtyard area.

The design has been planned in conjunction with staff and patients to ensure an appropriate environment, located on the RUH site but separate from the acute hospital building, in keeping with

the ethos of the service to help patients live well with ongoing pain.

The new building also provides separate accommodation for patients attending Ankylosing Spondylitis or Complex Regional Pain Syndrome residential rehabilitation programmes.

Radiology consultants appointed to Royal College positions THE Radiology department at the RUH in Bath has earned national prestige with four of its consultants being chosen for leadership positions in their speciality.

Dr Graham Robinson, who has specialist interests in thoracic and musculoskeletal radiology, is the new President of the British Society of Thoracic Imaging (BSTI).

The Society represents thoracic radiologists in the United Kingdom and Ireland and is recognised as a Special Interest Group by the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR).

It provides specialist advice to the RCR, NHSE and NICE. Dr Richard Graham, who specialises in nuclear medicine and musculoskeletal radiology, has been voted in as President Elect of the British Nuclear Medicine Society (BNMS) and will become President in May 2020.

The BNMS, the only independent forum devoted to all aspects of nuclear medicine, is an organisation concerned with the clinical practice, education, research and development of nuclear medicine within the UK. It is also recognised as a Special Interest Group by the Royal College of Radiologists.

Dr Stewart Redman, consultant radiologist with expertise in nuclear medicine, ear, nose and throat and gastrointestinal radiology, has been appointed as the Radiation Protection adviser for the Royal College of Radiologists, where he will advise on best practice in radiation safety.

Dr Jonathan Rodrigues, who specialises in advanced multimodality cardiovascular imaging and all facets of thoracic imaging, has been appointed as Imaging lead for the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) West of England Clinical Research

Network, championing imaging research in the region.

His roles at the national level are as a member of the Royal College of Radiologists’ professional learning and development committee, and lead for standards and guidelines on the executive committee of the British Society of Thoracic Imaging.

James Scott, RUH Chief Executive, said: “To have four consultants elevated to such esteemed positions in their field is an outstanding achievement for the RUH. “It’s an endorsement of the major investment we have made in the department, creating one of the most modern and bestequipped in the South West, and puts the Trust on the UK map for excellence and expertise.”

What's On Fashion Museum set to showcase world-class shoe collection

Bath Bachfest set to return next month

A DISPLAY showcasing some of the highlights and curiosities of the Fashion Museum’s worldclass collection of more than 3,000 pairs of shoes will go on show from Saturday 28th March 2020.

Demonstrating the creativity of shoemakers throughout history, more than 100 pairs of shoes and boots will be displayed, over half of which have never been on show before.

From the oldest shoes in the collection to shoes belonging to Her Majesty Queen Mary, from trainers and sneakers to designer shoes by Vivienne Westwood, Versace and Jimmy Choo, the Fashion Museum’s shoes on display will document the evolution of shoe style over the last 300 years.

Shoes will be interspersed with the fashions on display as part of the A History of Fashion in 100 Objects exhibition, celebrating fashion from the 1600s to the present day.

Rosemary Harden, Fashion Museum Manager, said: “In 2020 the Fashion Museum will ‘lift the lid’ on the Museum’s fabulous, and sizeable, collection of shoes.

“Our visitors keep telling us they love shoes! SINCE its creation in 2011, Bath Bachfest has established itself as a firm favourite in the annual classical music calendar.

Organised by the team which runs the acclaimed Bath Mozartfest each November, and programmed

by Amelia Freedman, the short midwinter festival celebrates the music of J S Bach and his Baroque contemporaries.

Five concerts over three days, featuring internationally acclaimed artists, are set against the beautiful backdrop of Bath's fine buildings.

The 2020 Bachfest will open with The Sixteen, comprising choir and instruments, with their founder and conductor Harry Christophers, presenting an inspiring programme of sacred choral music by Henry Purcell and Domenico Scarlatti.

The second evening concert will feature Brecon Baroque, the renowned international ensemble directed by violinist Rachel Podger, with rising star mezzo-soprano, Ciara Hendrick.

Their programme, entitled Bach Dynasty, will explore J S Bach’s musical antecedents in works by two of the most illustrious 17th century members of his large family of Lutheran musicians (J M and J C), and also Buxtehude who influenced him, finishing with two of J S Bach’s own works, a concerto and secular cantata.

roads. In Jane Austen’s novel Persuasion, the clatter of iron pattens on the streets of Bath gave Anne Elliot a headache.

A special feature will be the Wearers’ Wall, at the heart of the Museum galleries, giving visitors a glimpse of the lives of the original owners and wearers of the shoes that are now preserved for posterity in the Fashion Museum collection.

Community 56-year-old Bath man reunited with New home for Somer lifesavers after heart stops beating Valley Foodbank following recent appeal A FATHER-OF-TWO has been reunited with the off-duty doctors who saved his life when his heart stopped beating at his local squash club in Bath.

John Savage, 56, from Bath, went into cardiac arrest during fitness training at Lansdown Tennis Squash & Croquet Club in the Northfields area of the city on Sunday 13th October.

Bristol GP, Mark Byron, realised John had stopped breathing and called for help.

He carried-out CPR with Dr Richard Dixon, and they gave John three shocks with a defibrillator.

Local businessman, Andy Ewings, called 999 to alert South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) who arrived within four minutes.

John soon regained consciousness and has gone on to make a fantastic recovery.

John made a special visit to Bath Ambulance Station on Tuesday 26th November to thank his lifesavers in person.

He said: “I felt my heart flutter and thought it was going to pass out. The next thing I remember is Paramedic Ed leaning over me. I felt like I was in the eye of my own storm.

“There was a lot of concern for me, but I’m practically back to normal now.

“I survived because of the great response and treatment I received. I’m incredibly lucky to be alive.

“I’m not religious, but it’s miraculous.”

Dr Byron said: “It was an upsetting event. But I went into autopilot, and thankfully the ambulance crew arrived quickly.”

999 Call Handler Vicki Hodgon and other staff in the Control Room organised for crews to respond to the emergency.

Paramedics Ed Hill and Rosemary Cherry treated John at the scene, and conveyed him to the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

They were supported by Paramedic Matthew Jenkins and Operations Officer Michael Anning.

John was transferred to the Bristol Heart Institute for surgery.

More than 2,000 books have been donated to the council libraries’ Gift a Book campaign, and have now been distributed as gifts via eight charity partners.

Councillor Paul Crossley, cabinet member for Community Services, said: “It’s been heartwarming to see such a huge response to our appeal for people to give us their unwanted books so that others in need will receive a Christmas gift.

THANKS to the generosity of a local businessman, the Somer Valley Foodbank now has a new home to store their 6 tonnes of non-perishable food, following a recent media appeal.

Somer Valley Foodbank Chairman, Paul Woodward, said: “This was the answer to our prayers and the new offer came along at the right time following the articles in the local press.

“There were several offers made to us, but this businessman’s was the best for our operation.

The foodbank management team would like to thank our previous landlord who was most generous and helpful with the arrangement we had, it was just unfortunate that we had to leave. It had been a very useful warehouse for us to have for the last five years. We fully understand the need to increase the rent but it was beyond our means to continue there.”

Foodbanks provide three days of emergency food to people who need it the most. Professionals such as health visitors, social workers and the CAB identify people in crisis and issue them with a Foodbank voucher.

The voucher can be taken to a Foodbank distribution centre

where a friendly team of volunteers will offer a cup of tea and help people with their food needs. With more than 70 volunteers collecting and transporting food, helping in distribution centres, and providing support to those who visit, the Somer Valley Foodbank is one of the biggest v o l u n t e e r- l e d projects in Bath and North East Somerset.

Of the 2,000 people who receive help each year, they are referred to the Foodbank for a variety of reasons, such as being on a low income, benefit delays, benefit changes, debt, ill health, and unemployment etc.

The location of the new storage warehouse can’t be made public, but those who need Foodbank support are able to visit one of the charity’s distribution centres each week in Midsomer Norton, Paulton, Radstock or Peasedown St John. “We would also like to thank the local press for their support and to the community who continue to donate food for us to hand out to those who are referred to us by local agencies,” added Paul. Generous hotel guests help boost Bath Rugby Foundation funds GUESTS at the Apex City of Bath Hotel have boosted local charity Bath Rugby Foundation by adding a donation to their bill at the end of their stay.

The Bath Rugby Foundation and Apex City of Bath Hotel formed a partnership last year which saw hotel guests offered the chance to give a financial boost to the charity for every night they stay in the city.

The hotel on James Street West offered their guests a chance to include a £1 donation on their bill.

At half time in Bath Rugby’s recent clash with Northampton Saints, General Manager Michael Musgrave handed over a cheque for £1,347 to Bath Rugby Foundation’s Head of Fundraising, Halena Coury.

Mr Musgrave said: “We are thrilled to support such a vital charity within the area and can-

not thank our loyal customers enough for their wonderful donations and support.

“We believe it is our responsibility to support charities and local groups within Bath and our partnership with Bath Rugby Foundation has gone from strength to strength and continues to be a great success.”

£8000 given to bereavement charity Call on community to thanks to crematorium recycling sign up for counterterrorism training BATH & North East Somerset Council has donated £8000 raised from the recycling of metals reclaimed from Haycombe Crematorium to a bereavement charity.

Treehouse provides bereavement support to children and young people under the age of twenty-five, following the loss of a loved one. Faye Auty, Treehouse Trustee, said: “These funds will go a long way in helping bereaved children, young people and their carers manage the challenges following bereavement.

“Our group programmes enable participants to move forward with the help of our staff, volunteers and their peers.

The bereavement charity is the latest to benefit from money raised by the recycling of common items like medical pins, metal plates and artificial joints which are retrieved from the cremated remains of a loved one and recycled through a national scheme.

stitute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management of which Bath & North East Somerset Council is a member. Members of the scheme collect the metal from the cremators and the money raised from recycling is divided between ICCM members for distribution among charities.

Councillor Paul Crossley, cabinet member for Community Services, said: “I’m pleased we’ve been able to support the essential work of Treehouse. By providing support and therapy the charity helps many young people who are experiencing a rollercoaster

of emotions following the death of a loved one, cope with their grief. We always respectfully retrieve the cremated remains of a love one, but metal items used as part of surgery are often recovered from the cremator. The most responsible way to dispose of them is to recycle them. We feel it’s only right the money raised goes to support bereavement charities and I hope people who are bereaved take comfort from that.” Over the past year, £28,000 has been donated to charities across the region by Haycombe Cemetery and Crematorium.

AN award-winning counter-terrorism training course is being made available to the public for the first time, and Avon and Somerset Police want you to sign up and help protect the UK. Devised by counter-terrorism officers and security experts, the ACT Awareness eLearning package was previously only available to staff working in crowded places like shopping centres and entertainment venues.

Now, Counter Terrorism Policing has decided to open up the training to anyone who wants to become a CT Citizen so they can learn how to spot the signs of suspicious behaviour and understand what to do in the event of a major incident.

The programme was originally devised in partnership with retail giant Marks and Spencer – and participants needed to be signed up by their employers.

The online learning is now available free of charge to anyone who wants to take part.

Assistant Chief Constable Stephen Cullen said: “ACT Awareness eLearning is especially

useful for anyone working in or regularly visiting crowded places.

“Developed alongside industry experts more than one and a half million modules have already been completed.

“The course has been so popular, with nine out of 10 users saying they would recommend it, we want to open it up to as many people as possible.

“The threat level remains at Substantial – meaning an attack is likely – so giving everyone the chance to be extra eyes and ears for police and local security teams help to keep all communities across the Avon and Somerset area safe.

“The festive period is obviously a very busy one – so this is a good time to join up and become a CT Citizen.”

ACT Awareness is made up of seven modules that take a few minutes each to complete.

You can pause and re-join at any time. In total it takes just 45 minutes – so less than an hour of your time could help to prevent an attack or help save lives if one was to happen.

Thousands donated to Forever Adventurous locals raise £30k Friends and Dorothy House trekking Great Wall of China THE Helen Straker Charity raised £78,000 during 2019 in aid of two local charities, Dorothy House Hospice Care and the Royal United Hospital’s Forever Friends Appeal.

Both charities received £39,000 at a recent cheque presentation held at The Bear Hotel in Devizes.

They were the two favourite charities of Helen Straker, late wife of Gordon Straker, who sadly lost her fight against cancer in 2013.

This year’s fundraising total by the Helen Straker Charity was raised at a number of events including their annual golf day in July and clay pigeon shoot in September.

This follows another great year of fundraising last year when the Helen Straker Charity raised a total of £80,000.

Helen was a proactive fundraiser for both Dorothy House Hospice Care and the RUH Cancer Care campaign.

Her husband, Gordon Straker, continues Helen’s impressive fundraising efforts for The Helen Straker Charity which was officially registered in 2014.

The charity now organises a variety of fundraising events each year including golf days, clay pigeon shoots, dinners, balls and comedy nights.

Gordon, Trustee of the Helen Straker Charity said: “My thanks to all the companies, individuals and sponsors who supported our charity this year. Well done to all involved it’s a great achievement. We are proud to have raised £78,000 in funds for Helen’s two chosen charities this year

as her aim in life was to help others and it is very satisfying to be able to continue her legacy as she would have wished.”

TWENTY-ONE local people have raised £30,000 by trekking the Great Wall of China, with the money going to the Forever Friends Appeal to benefit patients and their families at the RUH in Bath.

Over six days, the group trekked the twists, turns, steps and slopes of the new wonder of the world, which included covering some of the most untouched sections of the Great Wall.

The group also had the opportunity to leave their own mark in China by placing a brick at one of the watchtowers.

The Forever Friends Appeal is now recruiting fundraisers to take part in their next challenge – a trek through the spiritual

home of the Dalai Lama in India in September 2020. Maddy Jones, Senior Events Fundraiser, The Forever Friends Appeal said: “It’s thanks to people like Lindsey and the rest of our China trekkers that we have been able to raise such a fantastic amount for the RUH. “Next year’s trek to India is going to be fantastic – those who join us will experience walking the streets of Delhi and take in the spectacular scenery of the Indian Himalayas.”

Business Employers being urged to support workers taking on Dry January EMPLOYERS across Bath and North East Somerset are being urged to support their workers and help them reappraise their relationship with alcohol during Dry January.

There are numerous risks to overindulging in alcohol including cancer, liver disease and mental health problems.

As well as taking a toll on people’s health, alcohol also has a big impact on the economy.

The Department for Health estimates that it costs £3.5bn each year to treat alcoholrelated problems and it’s thought hangovers cost the country £7.3bn each year in sick days and lost productivity.

During this Dry January, employers are being urged to encourage their employees to give up alcohol for a month to improve their health and change their drinking habits long term.

It could be by displaying posters explaining how to sign up for the challenge, organising alcoholfree social events or reviewing their company’s alcohol policy.

The Dry January campaign, run by the charity Alcohol Change UK and endorsed by Public Health England, is once again being supported by Bath & North East Somerset Council.

Councillor Rob Appleyard, cabinet member for Adult Services, said: “We know that almost one in three people say workplace stress makes them drink more.

“Employers have a responsibility to help their workforce manage that stress and one way they can do that is by supporting employees during Dry January.

“As well as improving our health, drinking less also has more immediate benefits from sleeping better to feeling more energetic and losing weight.

“Reducing your alcohol intake

can also help to maintain a stable home environment for the rest of the family. It can also improve your performance at work and your bank balance.

“Taking part in Dry January helps people to experience those benefits, take charge of their drinking and make a long-lasting change to a healthier relationship with alcohol.”

According to a new online YouGov poll commissioned by Alcohol Change UK, almost four out of five people drink more than they want or intend to.

The reasons for drinking more than planned vary between age groups. Younger people are more likely to drink more than they wanted to because they feel it makes them more outgoing (over a third, 36% of people aged 1824), while people of all ages find themselves drinking more than they want as a result of drinking in rounds (20% of people).

More than one in five (23%) British adults feel pressured to drink more alcohol than they want to by people they know: mostly by friends (15%) and colleagues (6%). While fewer older people experience this ‘peer pressure’ it never disappears completely, with over one in ten (12%) of those aged 55 and over saying they experience pressure to drink from people including their friends, colleagues and family.

One in ten drinkers in the UK (10%) plan to take on Dry January in 2020, seeking to throw off the pressure and reset their relationship with alcohol.

Dr Richard Piper, CEO of Alcohol Change UK, said: “This research shows that lots of us are drinking in ways that we don’t feel comfortable with, but it can be tricky to know how to make a change.

“Signing up for Dry January is

a brilliant place to start. Being alcohol-free for 31 days shows us we don’t need alcohol to have fun, to relax, to socialise, and Dry January offers a ready-made response to anyone who tries to pressure us to drink.

“Strong evidence tells us that signing up for Dry January helps people – even heavy drinkers – to drink more healthily all year round.”

Each year almost four million people take part in Dry January.

By officially signing up via Alcohol Change UK they receive support to help them stay alcohol-free for the entire month, in a bid to reduce their drinking going forward, increasing their likelihood of long-term behaviour change.

Jane took part in Dry January last year. She said: “Making the decision to give up alcohol in January has literally been life changing.

“Drinking three or four large glasses of wine a day with more at the weekend on top involving several stiff gins and tonics, had become a habit as well as a crutch for depression.

“I feel so much brighter and happier and I’ve also lost half a stone which has encouraged me to exercise. Giving up alcohol has made a change that I want to last.”

Where an individual is experiencing physical symptoms when they stop drinking (which may include but are not limited to: shakes, sweating, restlessness, insomnia, nausea, stomach cramps or hallucinations) they should seek medical help urgently.

Decision looming for proposed Bath City FC development BATH City FC is awaiting the result of a crucial planning application which, if approved, the club says will secure its long-term future at Twerton.

The community-owned club has previously made public its need to make changes in order to remain in Twerton and resolve its own finances.

It currently has £1million of debt, due for repayment by 2022, and is still running at a loss.

In 2017, Bath City announced it was working with Greenacre Capital on a joint scheme to both redevelop part of Twerton High Street and Twerton Park football

ground.

The planning application includes a new grandstand, community hub and a 3G pitch alongside Purpose Built Student Accommodation.

Bath and North East Somerset Council is likely to make its ruling on the application in February.

Nick Blofeld, Chair of Bath City Football Club, said: “We think Bath City FC is an important part of the community and we have been playing at Twerton Park since 1932.

“We’re really hoping for a positive outcome from the planning committee meeting as we want

to stay here. We have worked closely with Bath and North East Somerset Council throughout this process and we’re appreciative of the advice and guidance they have given us.

Talking about the wider benefits the proposals will bring to the community of Twerton, Nick Blofeld added: “We firmly believe the scheme developed with Greenacre brings numerous benefits not just for the Club but also the community.

“There is also a great opportunity here for further investment in Twerton, with the West of England Combined Authority already offering another £650k for improvements if our development goes ahead.

“A refreshed High Street will attract new shops and businesses and we’ll be creating improved public spaces and a Club with useful, usable space year round.”

The application comes after much work and four rounds of comprehensive public consultation and community liaison, and on the back of the Club’s most successful season for many years, which saw record crowds at Twerton Park, with more than 1,000 spectators regularly attending every game.

ENVIRONMENTAL protections are unlikely to come into force soon enough to stop Bath Rugby Club building a 550-space car park under its new stadium at the Rec. Opponents have questioned how the proposed development could be allowed – inside the city’s looming clean air zone – when Bath and North East Somerset Council has declared a climate emergency.

Responding to calls for urgent action, deputy leader Richard Samuel said changing planning policies to reduce carbon emissions is “not a quick fix” and it will take time to make them legally watertight.

The club has argued the short-stay car park is a fundamental part of its redevelopment plans that will not increase journeys into the city.

Speaking at public meeting on the council’s priorities, for the next year and beyond, on 18th December, Councillor Samuel said: “Next year we’re changing the council’s planning policies to make it more difficult for people to do things that aren’t climate friendly.

“There will be policies that encourage carbon neutral development.

“Our flagship policy will be low traffic neighbourhoods, which we intend to introduce through the city.

“We see those as a major opportunity to design traffic use to prevent rat running and degradation of residential areas by traffic.

“We’re putting money into that, as well as walking and cycling measures.”

Bath Rugby Club is set to submit plans early in 2020 to build an 18,000-seater stadium with a 550-space car park underneath.

Concerns have already been raised for the Bath’s World Heritage Status, and about the impact on carbon dioxide and nitrogen dioxide emissions when the council has declared a climate emergency and a clean air zone is about

to be introduced.

Cllr Samuel revealed the charges for highpolluting vehicles coming into the city will come into force ahead of schedule on 4th November 2020.

The rugby club says the car park would replace spaces that are set to be lost elsewhere in the city and feature charging points for electric vehicles.

It claims there will be no additional journeys into the city and sustainability is at the heart of the development.

Resident Cate Mack said: “There’s great concern about the use of road space within the city and the air quality, and the inability to resist something that will make things much worse.

“Surely there’s nothing to stop you adopting very rapidly a policy that says we will make sure that no development challenges our commitment to addressing the climate emergency.

“Just get on with it, or you’re going to lose a lot of people.”

Another member of the public said: “A car park for 550 cars would be against your environmental policy.

“I imagine if the club came forward with an application you would refuse it.”

Cllr Samuel said: “Everybody knows there’s been a long-running debate about what should happen at the Rec. “We expect a planning application in the new year.

“We don’t know what those proposals are yet, but we know their flavour.

“When the council does receive the application it will have to consider it against its current policies, not ones we might adopt in the future.

“If we refuse applications without a sound basis, those applicants will appeal, and those decisions will be overturned.

“The council doesn’t want to be in that position.

“We want robust policies that have public support, are legally watertight and will work.

“You will have the ability to comment when those proposals come forward next year. Changing planning policies isn’t a quick fix. It takes time. You will have to bear with us.”

Politics B&NES Council considers future of Guildhall ahead of facelift Stephen Sumner

THE future of Bath’s historic Guildhall could look very different.

The building has been at the heart of city politics for 350 years but deputy leader Richard Samuel said other sites could work “much better” as Bath and North East Somerset Council’s centre of operations.

He has been urged to consider the city’s heritage as he launches a review of the authority’s retail-heavy property portfolio so it can boost the income it receives.

Cllr Samuel, the cabinet member for resources, told a public meeting at the grade I-listed Guildhall on Tuesday, 17th December: “The council is a major landowner and property owner.

“The property base needs to work harder and earn its keep better.

“A lot of the property is retail. The sector is under some stress of late, in Bath in particular.

“We will be looking at how we can diversify our portfolio.

“A big piece of work going on is looking at the operation of this building [the Guildhall].

“This is not a popular building for staff, because it’s not really ideally identified for office accommodation.

“We’re looking at what the future is for this building in terms of our use of it as an operational centre.

There are other places that could work much better.”

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Samuel said: “We aren’t leaving the Guildhall and we aren’t going to sell it.

“People recognise it as a symbol of the council. We have no plans to change that.

“We want to make it a much better space for the public to be in.

We want it to be their space rather than the council’s.”

He said there are fewer than 50 staff currently working in the Guildhall in worse conditions than their colleagues in other council buildings who could be moved to Bath or somewhere else in Keynsham.

Council and committee meetings would stay at the building, as will the mayor, and it will remain the civic hub.

A facelift is planned for the Guildhall this year.

Advertising the “stunning Georgian building” for weddings, conferences and parties, the council’s website says it has been “at the heart of Bath’s administrative life for over 350 years”.

A recent freedom of information request confirmed that the Guildhall is a costly building to run.

£56,944 in 2017/18, compared to £7,000 for the new-build offices in Keynsham, although that building is far smaller.

The Guildhall cost more than £19,000 to heat, while business rates on the property set the council back £224,000.

comments, Conservative group leader Cllr Paul Myers said: “We always welcome new proposals that would see the council make the best and most efficient use of public assets.

“However, when it comes to the future of an iconic building in our city, it is important to balance the

financial considerations against the protection of our heritage which includes the Guildhall’s use.

“The public do not want to see the Guildhall having an uncertain future with the risk of it becoming another luxury hotel in the hands of developers.”

Transformation of food waste into electricity documented in video THE transformation of food waste collected in Bath into electricity to power thousands of homes in the area with nothing going to landfill is now available for residents to see for themselves in a new video.

B&NES Council has partnered with recycling and renewable energy company GENeco to show people how their food waste is first shredded out of its plastic bags, made into ‘soup’ and then ends up as renewable energy and on farmland as a nutrient-rich fertiliser.

The video shows a ‘circular economy’ where nothing is wasted and any plastic is sent for recovery locally.

The GENeco process also produces energy which powers its plant in Avonmouth and 7,000 homes in the area.

Councillor David Wood, cabinet member for Climate Emergency and Neighbourhood Services, said: “Although our residents are recycling more than ever before and over 550 tonnes of food waste is collected from homes

each month, there are still some myths surrounding food waste and whether it is really put to good use.

“We are delighted to have worked with GENeco on this interesting and informative video that shows exactly where food waste collected from Bath and North East Somerset ends up.

“I would like to highlight that every piece of food waste that residents put into their recycling bins does count and is a valuable resource.

“We encourage people to compost at home but if this is not possible, to use their food waste bins instead of throwing compostable material into their black bins – it could end up powering their homes.

“If every home in our district recycled its food, it would create enough electricity to power 1140 homes for a year.”

RESIDENTS from across the Bath and North East Somerset area are being asked for their views on B&NES Council’s future priorities and spending plans.

Following two public events in Bath and Keynsham, where cabinet members and the council’s chief executive outlined the authority’s plans, residents are now being given the opportunity to comment on the detailed Corporate Strategy document.

‘Improving People’s Lives’ is the key aim of the council, and the ways in which it will achieve this, alongside addressing the climate emergency and giving people a bigger say, are set out in the plan.

Councillor Dine Romero, council leader, said: “Our draft strategy has been shaped by the conversations we’ve had so far with our Area Forums and at the public events we held in Bath and Keynsham.

“We have a clear purpose – which is improving people’s lives. We also want to focus on addressing the climate emergency and giving people a bigger say in what the council does.

“Our strategy also sets out our commitments under the headings of ‘preparing for the future’,

‘focussing on prevention’ and ‘delivering for local residents’.

Councillor Richard Samuel, deputy council leader, added: “The Corporate Strategy will shape what we do and how we work to improve the lives of residents.

Before it’s finalised, we want to hear people’s views as part of our continuing conversation with residents.

ELECTED representatives in Bath and North East Somerset could be in line for a pay rise.

Calling for an independent review, council leader Dine Romero said the £8,000 allowance councillors receive could deter disadvantaged people from standing for election.

Councillor Chris Watt criticised the move, saying many employed by the council could not expect large pay rises.

But cabinet member for resources Richard Samuel said a recent reduction in the number of councillors had increased workloads and the sums they receive do not reflect that.

Cllr Romero said: “I’m firmly of the belief that a councillor should represent our society. We need to make sure we make this role as attractive as we possibly can.

“I think it’s clear we aren’t wholly representative of our community and need to do what we can to address that, to encourage greater diversity.”

She argued allowances should be set nationally, adding: “It’s very difficult sometimes to accept the findings of an independent panel because it often comes across as we’re voting to reward ourselves,

which is not the intention.”

Every councillor receives a basic allowance of £7,993 – a sum that decreased by £66 after the last review in 2017 – and those with special responsibilities get extra on top.

For her role as leader, Cllr Romero receives an additional £32,445, while her deputy, Cllr Samuel, and cabinet members get £19,484 each.

There are also extra allowances for committee chairs that are worth up to £14,314.

Reviews of allowances are only scheduled to take place every five years.

Cllr Watt said: “We only had a review two years ago.

“It’s clear the intention is to seek a more generous allowance as one way to make it more attractive for people to come forward as councillors.

“We’ve just completed quite a costly exercise to reduce the number of councillors from 65 to 59 to reduce the cost of democratic services.

“Many members of staff aren’t in receipt of large pay rises, and foster carers aren’t in receipt of increases to their allowances.

“I would suspect we would regret the panel producing anything like the recommendations seen in other areas.

“It will go down like a very untasty sandwich with our residents.”

Cllr Samuel said the number of councillors was not reduced solely to cut costs, and the boundary commission’s review had not considered the impact it would have on workloads.

He added: “That’s the primary purpose of this review – to look at the impact on the remaining members and see if the allowance is correct.

“There’s no presumption allowances will go up or down.

“There have been major changes to the responsibility that councillors have.

“It’s only right that allowances and remuneration should be reviewed. It brings us up to date.”

Cllr Samuel said any changes to allowances would not be implemented until 2021/22, nearly five years after the last review.

Conservative group leader Paul Myers said the council would have the power to accept or reject the independent panel’s recommendations.

Bath and North East Somerset highly Invite issued for expert ranked for sustainable growth talk on low traffic neighbourhoods BATH and North East Somerset has joined the top 30 best areas in the UK out of 324 for creating an environment for sustainable growth.

The area comes in at number 27 out of 324 local authorities in the country for sustainable growth and dynamism by a new report from leading business and financial adviser, Grant Thornton UK LLP. The Sustainable Growth Index tracks the success of the 324 local authority areas in England.

As well as looking at traditional economic measures, the report also takes into account social indicators such as dynamism, inclusion, health, resilience and community trust.

Locally South Gloucestershire is ranked 29, Bristol 48 and North Somerset 134.

Bath and North East Somerset was also ranked fifth highest in the country for its resilience and sustainability, which measures things like recycling rates and CO2 emissions, alongside planning applications and dwelling completions.

The council was also ranked 21st in the community, trust and belonging categories.

measuring the success of an area and it takes into account more than just a place’s economic performance. I am pleased to see our area is in the top thirty but there is always more to do to continue to improve the area’s economy as well as residents’ wellbeing.

“Over the next four years I want to see us rank even higher as we work to improve people’s lives through a planned programme of priorities, including at Bath Quays, where our investment in new offices, infrastructure and homes will contribute positively to both the economy and to tackling the climate emergency.”

Through the Business Growth service, the council funds business support programmes for new entrepreneurs and established SME businesses, supports sector networks, and helps both indigenous businesses and potential inward investors find workspace in the area.

AMBITIOUS ways to create low traffic neighbourhoods and help improve people’s health will be discussed at a free event in Bath later this month Bath & North East Somerset Council is hosting an event looking at ways to change the way people travel around the city in order to help improve air quality and promote more walking and cycling.

Guest speaker Councillor Clyde Loakes, deputy leader of Waltham Forest Council, will talk about the positive impact low traffic neighbourhoods are having in the North London district.

Councillor Joanna Wright, joint cabinet member for Transport, said: “I’ve invited Councillor Loakes to come and talk to us about the positive impact low traffic neighbourhoods are having in Waltham Forest so residents can hear first-hand about them because we have ambitious plans to change the way people travel in our city.

“We can’t continue the way we

are with poor air, traffic congestion and its impact on both our health and the climate – we have to make real changes.

“Low traffic neighbourhoods are one way of helping achieve this because they provide the most efficient use of street space, curb rat-running and help to create attractive local environments for residents, visitors and businesses.”

Abbey’s Footprint project receives RUH therapists write £200k boost from local philanthropist new national patient information leaflet BATH Abbey has received £200,000 from local philanthropist, Andrew Brownsword CBE DL, as part of a half a million pound match funding pledge for the ongoing Footprint project.

This is the second time this year that the Abbey’s Footprint project has been given a major boost from the Brownsword Charitable Foundation, who have given a total of £375,000 in matchfunding in just under 12 months.

Thanks to their generosity, every pound donated to Footprint has been doubled by the Brownsword Charitable Foundation and will continue to be matched until their full £500,000 pledge has been unlocked.

The commitment has encouraged new individuals and businesses alike to come forward and give, in order to maximise the impact of their donations.

Andrew and Christina Brownsword recently visited the Abbey and met with The Reverend Canon Guy Bridgewater, the Abbey’s Rector, for an update on the Footprint project now that it is nearing the end of its second phase.

The Revd Canon Guy Bridgewater said: “We were delighted to welcome Mr and Mrs Brownsword to the Abbey.

“It was wonderful that they were able to see the newly restored East end for themselves, especially as they’ve done so much to support the Footprint project.

“Their continued support as part of The Brownsword Charitable

Foundation’s pledge of half a million pounds in match funding towards Bath Abbey’s Footprint project means so much to us.

“We’re hugely grateful for the Brownsword’s generosity and look forward to their next visit.”

Andrew Brownsword said: “A big reason for us supporting the Footprint project is because we believe the Abbey makes a positive contribution to the city, its visitors and the local community.

“Whether this is through worship and prayer, music or architecture, many people feel a connection with the Abbey.

“We would encourage as many as possible to support the Footprint project to ensure the Abbey continues to inspire and bring lasting benefits to future generations.”

Essential works are currently being carried out inside the Abbey’s north side to repair the collaps-

ing floor and to install underfloor eco-heating that will be powered

by Bath’s famous hot springs.

Building work is also taking place outside the Abbey to create much-needed space underground for new and improved facilities, as well as in the adjacent terrace row of houses in Kingston Buildings.

The Footprint project is an ongoing £19.3 million programme of restoration, building works and interpretation that will help to secure the Abbey’s physical future and improve its hospitality, worship and service to the city.

Of this total, Bath Abbey has around £0.75 million left to raise, largely thanks to a grant of £10.7 million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and additional funds from private individuals and trusts, the Abbey’s own congregation and visitors.

TWO specialist medical therapists from the RUH have been chosen to write an information leaflet for people recovering from a blood clot, which is being distributed to patients across the country.

Regitse Lewis and Chrissie Entwistle were approached by national charity Thrombosis UK to author the leaflet after the charity heard about the work they were doing at the RUH to encourage patients who had experienced a blood clot to exercise.

The leaflet, titled Getting Active After a Blood Clot, explains why exercise is so important to help recovery and includes examples of ways to keep fit, such as setting up a walking programme and resistance training.

The leaflets are already available in departments throughout the RUH and can be supplied to hospitals across the UK on request.

Regitse said: “We delivered a presentation at a Thrombosis UK masterclass and spoke at Thrombosis Ireland’s patient conference about the work we’d been doing at the RUH to get patients exercising after a blood clot.

“Thrombosis UK got in touch and

asked us whether we would provide the content for the leaflet.

“It’s a real honour to have written such an important patient information leaflet, especially as it is available nationally.

“It reflects very well on the RUH and the work we’ve been doing here.”

The pair were instrumental in setting up a new exercise programme called Progress, aimed specifically at patients recovering from a blood clot in the lungs or the limbs.

The 10-week programme combines cardiovascular exercises with resistance training in hourlong exercise sessions using the RNHRD and Brownsword Therapies Centre gym.

Chrissie said: “The programme has been so well received, by both patients and staff.

“It’s all about supporting people back to health and it’s had a very positive effect – encouraging patients to exercise more as well as reducing their anxiety about exercising.

“It has had a really positive impact on patients’ physical health and quality of life too, helping them to return to work more quickly.”

Funding available for athletes in Bath and North East Somerset

Standing ovation for netball's Serena Guthrie

AHEAD of a huge year of UK and World sport in 2020, Bath and North East Somerset’s next generation of title-chasing athletes can apply for support in going for gold, thanks to the GLL Sport Foundation.

The GLL Sport Foundation (GSF), launched in 2008, by charitable social enterprise, GLL – operator of public leisure facilities in Bath and North East Somerset - helps aspiring sporting talent fulfil their potential. Supported athletes can benefit from financial support, physiotherapy, gym memberships at GLL’s Better sport and leisure facilities and more. GSF supports athletes across its regional network in 73 areas of the UK. In 2019, GSF supported over 3,000 athletes across 117 sporting disciplines, taking its total investment to £11 million in 11 years.

Previously, this support has contributed to the success of athletes including Olympic and World Champion Anthony Joshua. At the 2016 Olympic

TEAM Bath and England legend Serena Guthrie received a standing ovation from appreciative netball fans and her fellow players when she was inducted into the University of Bath Hall of Fame for Sport.

Guthrie, recognised as one of the world’s finest mid-court players and an inspiration for both club and country, was welcomed into the Hall of Fame by University of Bath Vice-President for Student Experience Dr Cassie Wilson during an on-court ceremony at the Team Bath Arena.

She was applauded by spectators and players from both Team Bath and Strathclyde Sirens, who were on court ahead of their match during a weekend of pre-season netball at the University’s Sports Training Village.

Guthrie began her career with Team Bath as a 16-year-old and has gone on to win three Superleague titles with the Blue & Gold. She also played in New Zealand and Australia for four years, cementing her global

“GSF recognises the difficulty that many talented athletes face in getting the necessary support to take the next step into elite competition, with 96% of GSF athletes receiving no additional funding. With a massive year of sport coming up, this support will be even more important as many

athletes begin to target major honours.”

Peter Bundey, Chair of GLL Sport Foundation added: “As a social enterprise, GLL continues to invest in these talented athletes within our communities through the GLL Sport Foundation. We are proud to once again partner with the Mary Peters Trust, SportsAid and SportsAid Wales to support the next generation of medal contenders and we are excited to receive this year’s applications.”

Guthrie is taking a year out of netball but remains part of the Blue & Gold family and is serving as an ambassador both for the club and Sporting Family Change, the Bath-based charity that is partnering with Team Bath Netball in 2020 to make a difference through sport.

She is the fourth netballer to be inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame for Sport, joining fellow England stars Pamela Cookey and Stacey Francis plus hugely-influential coach Lyn Gunson.

Team Bath athletes Six golds among the medal haul for taking to different track university-based swimmers CHARLOTTE Longden and William Scammell, who both train at the University of Bath, have been selected to race for Team GB in bobsleigh at the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Games.

The 17-year-olds will take to the ice at the world-famous St Moritz when the Games are staged at the home of the Olympic movement in Switzerland from 9th - 22nd January. Both were first introduced to the sport as track and field athletes with Team Bath Athletics Club who, like the British Bobsleigh & Skeleton Association, are based at the University’s Sports Training Village. Longden, an A-level student at Marlborough College in Wiltshire, said: “I have always dreamed of going to the Olympic Games ever since I was young.

Now being a part of Team GB is an amazing feeling and I am so excited to represent my country in the Youth Olympics and for my dream to come true.

"I am so excited to compete for Team GB and do both my family and my country proud. Although I never thought I would be doing bobsleigh, I fell in love with the sport ever since I first tried it and I can’t wait to do my best in

January.”

Longden and Scammell, from Devizes, will be bidding to emulate the 2012 medal success of Mica McNeill and Jazmin Sawyers – both have gone on to compete at the Olympics, the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games for McNeill and the Rio 2016 Summers Games for longjumper Sawyers.

Providing another Bath link to Lausanne 2020 is Team GB’s Chef de Mission Georgina Harland, who won modern pentathlon bronze at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games while training at the University. This is a very special moment for the 28 athletes selected for the Games,” she said.

“It provides vital experience of a multi-sport environment and can be an important stepping stone towards their senior careers.

“We have seen athletes from both summer and winter sports going on to compete at a senior Games and the athletes in Lausanne will, I am sure, grasp this opportunity to show everyone what they are capable of but, most importantly, enjoy what will be a fantastic experience.” The University of Bath is home to the UK’s only outdoor push-start track for bobsleigh and skeleton.

THERE were gold medals for Kieran Bird, Tom Dean, Tom Derbyshire and Calum Jarvis as University of Bathbased swimmers wrapped up 2019 by impressing at the Scottish National Short-Course Championships in Edinburgh.

Fresh from slicing a massive seven seconds off his personal best while winning 400m freestyle silver at the European ShortCourse Championships, Dean – supported by a Bill Whiteley Sporting Scholarship – touched the wall first in both the 100m individual medley (54.43) and 200m freestyle (1:42.33). He was also runner-up in the 200m IM (1:54.32).

Fellow British Swimming National Centre Bath swimmer Bird also recorded a double success, winning the 400m freestyle (3:43.37) and leading a Bath 1-2 in the 800m freestyle (7:43.76) ahead of runner-up Derbyshire (7:51.52). Luke Turley was fourth in 7:54.71.

Sport & Exercise Science student Derbyshire took gold in the 1500m freestyle (14:57.72) ahead of Turley (15:13.28), while Sports Performance graduate Jarvis took the 100m butterfly title (52.38) having previously placed third

behind Dean in the 200m freestyle (1:44.76).

There were also medals for Georgia Coates (200m freestyle silver, 1:55.64), Chloe Tutton (200m breaststroke silver, 2:25.95; 100m breaststroke bronze, 1:08.42), Jessica Fullalove (50m backstroke bronze, 27.24; 100m backstroke bronze, 59.40) and Cameron Kurle (400m freestyle bronze, 3:45.13).

Meanwhile, the University of Bath student swimming squad – coached by Mark Skimming and Andrei Vorontsov – took on international opposition when they contested Swim Cup Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

William Ryley and Jacob Greenow, supported by Goldsmith and Santander Sporting Scholarships respectively, both reached A finals, with Ryley fourth in the 200m backstroke (2:03.04) and sixth in the 1500m freestyle (15:50.81).

Greenow was placed sixth in the 400m IM (4:22.69) and seventh in the 200m IM (2:03.78), while Jasmine Iley was fifth in the 200m backstroke (2:16.12) and
