Technology not only allows us to alter and process sounds and voices, it can also generate speech and sounds from informative input. Simultaneously, speech recognition software is more prevalent than ever; we use our voice to ask questions to our devices, to communicate with applications and to control our homes. How do these changes shape our culture and our society? Who uses speech technology and with what purpose? And if technology improves existing society through speech technology, what do we lose and who gets left behind? How can it become more inclusive and what are the limits and prejudices of artificial intelligence?
Join a sound experiment by singing, whispering, humming, laughing, crying or yelling. Artist Christy Westhoven and scientist Frank Hopwood will have a conversation with each other and the audience. Why do Siri or Alexa not use these types of sounds, even though they are made with voices? And why does the Voice Technology industry not use these sounds more in general? Let’s discuss it on March 22nd.
