PREFACE
It feels like our previous festival just ended — and so it did! The 2020 edition of MAF-LUNA, postponed time and again, finally took place in September/October 2021. It was a feast of light and sound; of cables, machinery, hefty beamers, smoke, storm, and rain… And above all, it was a great celebration of coming together once again after a long, dry period of working from home, online meetings and exercise bikes. This celebration was followed rather unexpectedly by another hard lockdown with many restrictions. And our festival, which was meant to move permanently to February in 2022, had to be postponed again. Now, however, we are back once more with no intention of leaving: the first festival of the year to arrive in Leeuwarden and breathe life into the cultural scene. For two weeks and three weekends we present the most outstanding young media artists of today at our beautiful main location, Stationskwartier. We invite you to keep coming back here: to attend theme nights; to enjoy films and performances; and, of course, to have a good time in our café — and maybe even a dance now and then!
This edition is extra exciting for us, and not only because we move to a new timeframe in spring. For the first time, we also launch our entire program under the name ‘LUNA’. What used to be the ‘Media Art Festival’ (our two-week exhibition with side programming in the Stationskwartier) now becomes ‘LUNA Young Masters’ and ‘LUNA Currents’. Our outdoor program in the center of Leeuwarden, which this year takes place on March 24th, 25th and 26th, is now called ‘LUNA Nights’. Everything together is ‘LUNA’, a title which has become popular with both audiences and partners in recent years.
We look forward to meeting you, preferably very often, at our many projects and events. See you at LUNA 2022!
