THE LADY IN BLUE ON THE CONCHO RIVER Historical San Angelo By Dr. Linda Thorsen Bond What does it take to bring a legend to life? One of San Angelo’s leaders, Tilly Chandler, knew it takes a whole community, vision and lots of prayer. Tilly and the members of San Angelo’s Historic Beginnings had worked for five years to create an oasis on the Concho River where people can find peace and relaxation, meditation, and inspiration when Tilly passed away March 22, 2022. The vision started, in fact, hundreds of years ago. In the 1600s, the nun María de Ágreda wrote about her vision of visiting Native American tribes although she never left Spain. At the same time, members of the Jumano tribe said the Lady in Blue came to them in a vision near present-day San Angelo. Hundreds of them were baptized after their vision of the Lady in Blue.

stop when they see the bronze sculptures of Maria de Ágreda in her blue cape with a little girl from the Jumano tribe and the chief of the Jumanos. Designed and created by sculptor Vic Payne, the sculptures are beautiful by themselves. Tilly and the committee didn’t stop there. They created an environment around the sculptures. In her final interview in April, she explained, “We’ve added a walled area to create a place for people to sit and enjoy the vision of the landscaping and the river. Or they can find solace and enjoy a quiet endeavor. For a person of faith, this can be a place to meditate. People can commune with the spirit of the Jumano and recognize the part they played in history.”

Tilly said, “Yes, Marie de our town and our children should know that part of our Ágreda was a nun; yes, she bilocated, but in addition she history. This is a significant was the first woman evanaddition to downtown, both in gelist. San Angelo architect Craig Kinney, KFW Architects, designed the layout for the sculptures and for the new environment. He said, “The hope is that once you walk through the entry portal, you will have entered a different world. A low wall encloses you. As you turn right you will discover the Jumano man looking down the river

Sor Maria de Jesus de Agreda, a Franciscan nun who lived in Spain. toward Paint Rock. To the left you encounter the Lady in Blue and she looks somewhat upstream. She is in her own space, time and place but there is a communication between her and the Jumano child. Their visions intersect, and that’s really what this story is about.”

Three taller slabs of rock at the back of the scene are painted with pictographs resembling paintings the Jumanos did in the 1600s. They are based on historic paintings on rocks on the Campbell Ranch in Paint Rock, 33 miles from San Angelo. Ranch owner Kay Campbell did the painting. Although Tilly didn’t get to see the pictographs, she had a clear vision of how they would look.

paintings. There are over 1,500 recorded pictographs, in many different styles and created at varying dates by different nomadic tribes. I am fast approaching my 95th birthday so my family members will help me. I’m interested in making paint like the tribes did, using bear grease and hematite mixed together to make paintings on the stones that recreate some of the paintings on the ranch.”

“I thought it would be wonderful if Kay herself could bring those pictographs to town,” Tilly said last April. “I’m excited about the principle painting she will recreate. On the back side of the mountain on the ranch is a painting of a Jumano cross with boots at the bottom and a nun with a blue cape. That’s our Maria de Ágreda. That will be Kay’s key picture along with two smaller ones. We’ll have unobtrusive QR codes by the paintings and the statues so people can get information about them.” The artist Kay said her grandfather, Dunlap Edwards Sims, came to Texas to do research for the University of Missouri in 1876, and was appalled at the graffiti on the rock paintings. Kay said, “My grandfather bought the ranch so he could take care of the DowntownSanAngelo.com 15

Kay explained, “Tilly wanted beautiful artwork displayed in a meaningful way. I told her I’m too old, but she said, ‘Kay, you can do it!’ When Tilly sets her mind, that’s the way it was.” Masonry contractor Dan McCrea created an archway using rocks that appear to be old and brought in a mixture of concrete and crushed gravel to stabilize walkways inside the walled area. He put in a small fountain where people can sit on rock benches and hear gurgling water. David Mikulik with Scherz Landscape Co. planted the area, using native and lowmaintenance plant material. Kinney said, “When the vegetation grows it will make it very different. The sculptures won’t unfold all at once, they will be discovered. I think when you walk in and the scene begins to unfold, the vegetation will play a large part of that. I hope you will not see it all at once; each

character will have its own space that you discover.” Other plans include a plaque giving condensed information about the state leg-

islature acknowledging the presence of Jumanos in this part of the country and some information about how Vic Payne made the sculptures.

“Caleb Kattner and Lon Albert with the Reece Albert Company have put such a huge amount of resources into the site,” said Tilly. “What they’ve done and what it would have cost us is incredible. We owe a debt of gratitude to them for continuing to do what needed to be done.”

A documentary about the life of Maria, “The Needle and the Thread,” was partially shot in San Angelo in conjunction with the Jumano tribe, members of the committee and Victor Mancilla of Eravision. It was presented to Pope Francis in 2019 by an entourage of 52 San Angelo supporters and the Jumano Tribe. The hope is that Maria de Ágreda, the Lady in Blue, will be considered for canonization. Architect Kinney said, “I do think that our river is a real jewel in Texas. Along the river walk there are all kinds of gems—activities—scattered on the pedestrian trail. l like that the Lady in Blue area will own its separate place next to the river. It is one more jewel along our river trail.” The sculptures are east of Centennial Bridge just past Oakes Street in downtown San Angelo. They are a clear testament to the vision of Tilly Chandler, who set her mind to it and created an oasis on the Concho River.

Downtown San Angelo, Inc. Presents

Today, Brews Ewes & BBQ continues to serve its purpose of promoting the lamb industry and drawing hundreds of spectators and festival goers to Historic Downtown San Angelo. The 2023 cook-off attracted 40 competitors from near and far: Ballinger, Cypress, Lakeway, Tye, Aspermont, Del Rio, and New Mexico. Following International Barbecue Cooker Association (IBCA) guidelines, head cooks were challenged to serve the best brisket, chicken, ribs, and beans. For additional bragging rights and a chance to earn a $1,000 cash prize, the first 50 teams were granted entry into the Bbq's World Championship Lamb Cook-off sponsored by Double J Lamb. Adults were not the only competitors in the cook-off, a total of 16 children ranging in ages 6-15 participated in the Kids Que Competition for top hamburger or pork chop. Local musicians Amino, Kyler Dean, Billy Dan Langley's One-Man Blues Band, and ShineOla rocked the stage. The audience was kept in awe from performances by Raks Sanaan Belly Dance and Angelo Xpress Athletics.

This event has certainly flourished into a captivating scene. Due to its success, Brews Ewes & BBQ is looking forward to becoming a DowntownSanAngelo.com 27 State Qualifying cook-off within the next year.
