As always, Term 3 has been full of celebrations with Catholic Education Week, NAIDOC Celebrations and of course the return of the Mulkadee Youth Arts Festival.

It was wonderful to celebrate Catholic Education Week with representatives from our 29 schools across the Diocese at a special Mass on Monday 26 July. This Mass is always such a wonderful celebration with Bishop Tim and I love having the pleasure of awarding a senior student from each secondary school with the Deus Caritas Est Award which highlights the student’s commitment to the ways of Jesus Christ.

Catholic Education week also allows us an opportunity to recognise the contributions of our community members and staff with the Spirit of Catholic Education Awards. All the nominees should be congratulated on their dedication to Catholic Education. Special mention to our Townsville Diocese winner, Ryan Catholic College, Indigenous Education Advisory Committee Chair, Karl McKenzie. After not being able to hold Mulkadee in 2020, this year’s performance of the Wizard of Oz definitely did not disappoint. Our students, with the talented specialists, and support staff came together to deliver an amazing event, both on stage and behind the scenes. The Mulkadee Youth Arts Festival is the only event of its kind in Australia, and gives students a unique experience of education within the Arts. We are already looking forward to the 2022 Mulkadee experience.

As we prepare for our final term of the year, I would like to thank our staff across the Diocese who continue to remain positive and hardworking members of our school communities.

I hope you enjoy reading about our Term 3 activities including Indigenous Education initiatives and the contributions our staff make daily to inspire students.

God bless,

Our NAIDOC Week Celebrations took place at the beginning of the Term across the Diocese. The NAIDOC 2021 theme – Heal Country! – calls for all Australians to continue to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction. It was wonderful to see each of our schools promoting this important theme within their own school communities.

Celebrating Catholic

Education Week in Townsville

Catholic Education Week was celebrated with a special Mass for all schools across the Townsville Diocese. The annual event recognises the impact that Catholic schools have within the community and is held between 25-31 July.

Part of the celebration includes awarding the Deus Caritas Est Award to a senior student from each of our secondary schools. Nominated by the school, recipients are awarded for their generosity of spirit and their involvement in the school community, be that through participation in social justice groups, charity events or service work.

Catholic Education Week also includes The Spirit of Catholic Education Awards which recognise staff and volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution to their school community.

The Spirit of Catholic Education Awards, including the Aunty Joan Hendriks Reconciliation Award, are presented to seven recipients across the state whose contribution to Catholic Education goes above and beyond the expectations of their various roles.

Ryan Catholic College, Indigenous Education Advisory Committee Chair, Karl McKenzie, was named the Townsville Diocese 2021 Spirit of Catholic Education Award winner after being nominated by the College Leadership Team.
