After class and reading Our Lady of Assassins, I got a better understanding that there is more to Medellín than I perceived. Something you would like to share about your research: I did a lot of research on the peace processes. There are a lot of them and they all incorporate art and culture of Medellín into their causes for peace. Name: Anya Dubble-Olson Major: Media Production: Digital Post-Production Hometown: Newton, Massachusetts Your thoughts on Medellín before and after this class: Before this class, I honestly had never heard of Medellín, and when I found out that it was in Colombia I immediately associated it with violence and drugs. However, during this class I found out a lot more about the peace processes happening in Medellín, and now I have a much more positive and informed view of the city. Something you would like to share about your research: I did a lot of research on George Jung, who was Pablo Escobar’s US counterpart. I found that although a lot of the blame for cocaine trafficking is placed on the dealers in Colombia, US citizens like Jung who transport mass amounts of cocaine from Colombia are just as much a part of the problem. What makes you unique: I am a competitive horseback rider and have been riding since I was four.

Name: Daniel Fidler Major: Media Studies Hometown: Newton, Massachusetts Your thoughts on Medellín before and after this class: Before this class, I only had heard that Medellín factored significantly into the plot on HBO’s TV series Entourage. Now, I understand all about Medellín the city and Colombia as a whole, and its rich history involving the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar, drug runners, the demobilization and the reintegration of the paramilitaries, as well as all of the architectural achievements and the metro cable system. Name: Tabitha Hernandez Major: Marketing and Communication Disorders Hometown: Houston, Texas Your thoughts on Medellín before and after this class: I had never heard of Medellín, and when I first looked it up on Google for class all I could find was negative posts or descriptions about how dangerous it was. Throughout this class I have been enlightened and have been able to learn about many different positive contributions Medellín offers to Colombia, and also the world. Something you would like to share about your research: I researched and annotated sources on tourism and travel in Medellín, so one of the most interesting facts I found was that the city is named “the city of eternal spring” or La Ciudad de la Eternal Primavera, meaning that the temperature rarely gets over 72° F. What makes you unique: When I was born I had straight, dark black hair, about the age of 2 it turned curly and strawberry red, then eventually it was wavy platinum blonde, and I have never died or chemically changed it. Name: Rachel Huffman Major: Writing, Literature, and Publishing Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri Your thoughts on Medellín before and after this class: Before I began researching Medellín I didn’t even know it was a city in Colombia. Name: Jeff Kolb Major: Broadcast Journalism Hometown: Your thoughts on Medellín before and after this class: Coming into this course I had no idea what Medellín was. All I knew about Colombia in general was that it was supposed to be a very dangerous place to travel to or live in. Now I feel more appropriately informed about the city of Medellín, its past times of hardship and its current rebuilding efforts. I can understand misconceptions by people around the world about Medellín. I appreciate the project Professor Marko has had us work on this whole semester to try and right these faulty ideas about the great city that Medellín is and continues to become now.

Name: Jack Leary Major: Film Production Hometown: Manhattan, New York Your thoughts on Medellín before and after this class: Before this class, I didn’t know much about Medellín other than how it was portrayed in the media which is that it is a violent and poverty stricken place. Name: Maura Lyons Major: Theatre Education (Non-performance) Hometown: Wakefield, Massachusetts Your thoughts on Medellín before and after this class: Before this class I did not know where or what Medellín was. Now after researching the city and learning more about the Peace Process, I feel supportive of Medellín’s efforts to improve its safety for its citizens and I hope it continues to move forward in its plans. Something you would like to share about your research: For my first annotation, I wanted to research something that I was already interested in so that it would be easier to relate to Colombia. What makes you unique: I have seen Beauty and the Beast on Broadway fifteen times.

Name: Casey Roeder Major: Marketing Communications Hometown: Merrick, New York Your thoughts on Medellín before and after this class: Before this year, the only things I had heard about Medellín and Colombia were negative. Then, I had Tamera as a professor in the fall semester. I was introduced to the idea of the parques bibliotecas and the Duke Engage program, but I didn’t really get a full understanding of Medellín until taking Research Writing. After taking WR121 with Dr. T, I now feel that Medellín is definitely an up and coming city. I think that all of the peace processes are great for the city and its people, and that they show the strides that the city is taking towards peace. Something you would like to share about your research: Through my research, I learned about Colombian (and Medellín-born) artist, Fernando Botero. Not only did I get to examine and appreciate his paintings and sculptures, but I also learned about his integral role in the art aspect of the peace process in Medellín. What makes you unique: I worked as a public relations consultant for an up and coming music company.

Name: Evan Sigel Major: Film Hometown: Westborough, Massachusetts Your thoughts on Medellín before and after this class: Prior to this class, I had no preconceived notion about Medellín, but now I understand its significance and the revolutionary work going on there. It really is a model city for proving that change is possible. Something you would like to share about your research: I learned how difficult it can be for the average person to have access to scholarly articles and other journals, and the need to share the story of Medellín What makes you unique: I am part Spanish and hope to someday call Spain home.

! My name is Alex Dempsey I’m from Anchorage, AK and I’m a production major. I’m originally from New York and lived in Germany for three years. Why did you decide to stay in the research writing class? I chose to stay in the class because I saw it as an opportunity to help others while completing a required course. The subject of the class interested me much more than any other. "Yo decidí quedarme en esta clase porque yo la vi como una oportunidad para ayudar a otros mientras que completaba un crédito para una clase que tenia que tomar. el tema de esta clase me intereso mucho mas que cualquier otro."

!

My name is Ariana Basseri and I am a freshman Marketing Major at Emerson College. Fun fact: I went to Spain summer after my freshman year of high school. What global role do you see the peace process playing? “If Medellin can go from the most violent place in the world to a place where education is becoming a recognizable trait, then other places can too. “ “Si Medellín puede ir de siendo la ciudad mas violenta en todo el mundo a siendo una ciudad en que la educación es una característica que se puede reconocer, entonces otros sitios puede hacer igual.”

My name is Austin Fontanella. I’m a broadcast journalism major and I play baseball here at Emerson College. What was your perception of Medellin to begin this class and how has it changed, if it has? “When I first entered this class I knew almost nothing about Medellin nor could I even point it out on a map. After, taking this class for a semester and really studying and understanding the culture I now know that Medellin is a very cultural and educated place. I feel like after studying them for so long that they are a lot closer to home then they once were and I am much more interested in their peace process and what will happen to them as they continue to grow.” “Cuando primero entre a esta clase yo sabia casi nada sobre Medellín ni podía encontrar la ciudad en un mapa. Después de tomar esta clase por un semestre y de verdad estudiando y entendiendo la cultura, yo ya se que Medellín es una ciudad muy cultural y educada. Me siento que después de haber estudiado la ciudad por tanto tiempo, estoy mucho mas involucrado en su situación y estoy mucho mas interesado en su proceso de paz y que le va pasar a la ciudad mientras que continúan a crecer.”

! Hi, I’m Cami Bravo and I’m a marketing student at Emerson College. I enjoy witty advertisements, comercials, and marketing campaigns Why did you decide to stay in this research writing class? I stayed in this class because since arriving in the US I had never had any class that taught any kind of history or culture about my home country. I was eager to see how this one class could make a difference in a place my parents are much convinced will always stay the same. “Me quede en esta clase porque desde que llegue a los Estados Unidos, yo nunca tuve ninguna clase de clase que enseñaba historia o cultura de mi país. Yo estuve entusiasmada para ver como esta clase pudiera hacer una diferencia en un sitio que mis papas están convencidos va a permanecer.”

.*!1'23!#4!!"#$%&'(#)*"+,-5!!6!'2!'!.'&738#1%!9$2201#:'8#$14! 2';$&5!!6!'<4$!(<'*!4$::3&!'1=!<':&$443!'8!>23&4$15! !! What global role do you see the peace process playing? “I feel that Medellin’s example is something that should be looked at and followed in cities around the world. The fact that the entire rebuilding process came about and was put into action by the city itself is amazing to me. No outside help was needed to better the city, and I feel like that doesn’t happen often, so people should recognize that and learn from it.” “Yo siento que el ejemplo de Medellín es algo que debe ser visto y seguido por las ciudades alrededor del mundo. La manera que todo el proceso de reconstruyendo la ciudad me párese muy increíble. No hubo necesidad para ayuda fuera de la ciudad, y yo siento que eso no pasa con frecuencia, yo la gente debe reconocer esto y aprender de esto.” !

My name is Chelsea Stark, and I am a Visual and Media Arts Major with an emphasis on Film here at Emerson. A fun fact about me is that I have amazingly skilled toes. Why did you decide to stay in the research writing class? “I liked how involved the entire class seems in the making of this catalogue, and I think it's important to be knowledgeable about events going on outside the U.S. community.” “Me gustaba que tan involucrada se parecía que estaba toda la clase en creando este catalogo, y yo pienso que es importante saber eventos que están pasando a las afueras de los Estados Unidos.”

!

! My name is Crystal Chan and I am 19 years old. I am a Broadcast Journalism major, and am an expert at making excuses. Why did you decide to stay in the research writing class? “I continued to stay in the class because I enjoyed learning about a new place, a new culture, a new tradition. It’s amazing to see my own knowledge grow so much in one semester about one topic that was unheard of before in my realm.” “Yo me quede en esta clase porque disfrute aprendiendo sobre un sitio nuevo, una cultura nueva, y una tradición nueva. Es increíble ver my conocimiento crecer tanto en un semestre sobre un tema que nunca sabia que existía.” My name is Erin Aylward. I am 21 years old and I am currently seeking a BS in Communication Disorders. One can remember me as the girl who went to three different schools in three consecutive semesters. What was your perception of Medellin to begin this class and how has it changed, if it has? “To be honest, I had never heard of Medellin before this class and did not know that it was associated with Colombia. Since being in this class, my knowledge has grown about the violent drug trafficking to the Peace Process of the present day. I find it incredible how education and transportation accommodations can make the most violent city in the world, a city that is on par violence-wise with Washington DC in a matter of less than a decade.” “Para decir la verdad, yo nunca había oído de Medellín antes de tomar esta clase, y ni sabia que estaba en Colombia. Desde haber tomado esta clase, mi conocimiento a crecido sobre todo desde el violente trafico de drogas asta el proceso de paz de este dia. Yo lo encuentro increíble como la educación y las acomodaciones de transportación pueden volver r la ciudad mas violenta en el mondo, la ciudad que es solo comparable en violencia con Washington DC en menos de una década.”

Name: Karina Rubio Fun Fact: Once ate 500 green grapes for no reason. Major: Studio Television Production. What was your perception of Medellin to begin this class and how has it changed, if it has? I compared Medellin to my city, Caracas, which is now the most dangerous city in the world, and I assumed that change, in a short period of time, was nearly impossible. Now, after participating in this class and learning more about Medellin and it peace and educational process, I look at it as a symbol of hope. "Yo compare Medellín a mi ciudad, Caracas, que ahora es la ciudad mas peligrosa en el mudo, y asumí ese cambio, en un pequeño periodo de tiempo, fue casi imposible. Ahora, después de participar en esta clase, y aprendiendo mas de Medellín y su proceso de paz y educación, lo miro como un símbolo de esperanza."

What global role do you see the peace process playing? “I see Medellin's peace process as one that is taking the world by surprise. Before, it's reputation had been blackened by the violence and drug trafficking, but as it stands now, Medellin is working its way back into the global community as a place where peace wants to be established, and its people are doing all they can to help.” “Yo veo el proceso de paz de Medellín como uno que esta tomando el mundo por sorpresa. Antes, su reputación fue dañada por la violencia y el trafico de droga, pero ahora como esta, Medellín esta trabajando para verse mejor en la comunidad global como un sitio endonde la paz quiere ser estabilizada, y su gente esta haciendo todo lo que puede para ayudar.”

Lorenzo Carideo - VMA major at the prestigious Emerson College. “When my experience is over at Emerson, I plan to travel then move to Los Angeles, California to pursue my loves in music, film and new media production to create a job where I work for myself.” What global role do you see the peace process taking? “The peace process as a whole plays a role globally by setting a standard for how peace needs to be approached. If every country follows the trend of peace, the world will become more enlightened and realize that the only way to world happiness is through peace.” “El proceso de paz hace una parte global muy importante haciendo un ejemplo para como la paz necesita ser aproximada. Si cada país sigue este modelo de paz, todo el mundo se va inspirar y realizar que la única manera que felicidad mundial puede existir es através de la paz”

My name is Megan Walsh, and I am eighteen years old. I am a Film Production major, and therefore expect to spend most of my life as a waitress. I really love Lee Pace, The Beatles, Buffalo Wings, and coffee. What global role do you see the peace process playing? “More than anything, I would imagine it would affect the perception the rest of the world has of Colombia. It’ll show that there is more to the country than drugs and Pablo Escobar; they’re also working to better the country.” “Mas que nada, yo me imaginaria que tuviera un efecto en la percepción que el resto del mundo a Colombia. What global role do you see the peace process playing? “I think this will show the rest of the world that people really can change. Hopefully after Medellín has lost the need for a peace process, other people and cities and even countries can look to Medellín and see that nothing is broken so badly that you can’t fix it with hard work and hope.” “Yo pienso que esto le va mostrar al resto del mundo que la gente de verdad puede cambiar. Espero que después que Medellín pierde la necesidad por un proceso de paz, que otra gente y otras ciudades y hasta países puedan mirar a Medellín y ver que nada esta demasiado roto para ser corregido con bastante trabajo y esperanza.”

Why did you decide to stay in the research writing class? “I realized that in other writing classes I would just be doing assignments with no further purpose. With this class, I feel I have contributed to something bigger than me with a genuinely good purpose.” “Me di cuenta que las otras clases de escritura investigativa no iban a tener un propósito afuera de la clase. Y con esta clase, me siento que yo e contribuido a algo mas grande que me con un propósito muy bueno.”

What was your perception of Medellin to begin this class and how has it changed, if it has? “I switched into the class after the first day, so when I got the assignment to write down everything I knew about Medellin I though “Oh man I missed a lot!” I had a no idea what Medellin was, at the time it was just a random word that could have meant anything. For all I knew it could have been a kind of soda!” “Yo me metí en esta clase después de el primer día, entonces cuando me di cuenta que para tarea tenia que escribir sobre lo que sabia de Medellín, pensé, “Hombre, perdí bastante!” No tenia ni idea que era Medellín, y al tiempo Medellín era solo una palabra que podía haber sido un mundo de cosas.
