PROSPECTUS GROWING BOYS TO LEARN, LEAD
AND SUCCEED

![]()

We personalise learning for all boys, and offer a leading edge curriculum to nurture and challenge.

We provide an environment where all boys understand that leadership is service to others.

We offer a holistic education with a wide range of programmes where every boy can find their passion and experience success.

Aboy’s journey is shaped by the foundations we lay.
Every lesson learned, every challenge faced, every value instilled. At Medbury, we understand that boys learn by doing, by exploring, by pushing boundaries. So we give them the space to be energetic, curious, and adventurous - because boyhood isn’t something to be tamed, but nurtured.
We teach boys to think deeply, to question and strive, with personalised learning to unlock each boy’s full potential. We instil the belief that leadership is about standing beside. And that success can be found in many places - in the discovery of passions, the thrill of achievement, and the quiet confidence of being ready for whatever comes next.
For over a century, Medbury has been a place where boys can be boys, where they grow into young men who know not just how to win, but how to play the game—with honour, courage, and heart.
This is where bright futures take shape.
Success has a starting point.
It’s Medbury.

“The beginning is the most important part of the work.” Plato
Every boy’s story has a beginning. At Medbury, we believe success doesn’t start at the finish line - it starts the moment a boy walks through our gates, curious, wide-eyed, and ready to learn.
Success is often seen as a destination - test results, awards, scholarships, or future careers. But at Medbury, we know it begins long before that. True success starts with the small things: the first spark of curiosity, the first challenge overcome, the first time a boy chooses to do the right thing because it’s right.
For more than 100 years, Medbury has been a place where those beginnings matter. It’s where values are formed, friendships are forged, and the foundations for lifelong learning and leadership are built. We grow boys to learn, lead, and succeed not just for school, but for life.
The early years are when habits of mind and heart take shape. Research and our daily experience tells us that what happens in these primary years determines so much of what follows. Confidence, empathy, perseverance, curiosity; these are the muscles that must be exercised early if they are to grow strong.
That’s why we put such care into getting the starting point right. Our teachers know that every lesson and every challenge builds towards something greater. Whether it’s in the classroom, on the field, in the music room, or on an outdoor education camp, each experience is designed to help boys discover who they are and what they can become.
Success at Medbury isn’t about producing one kind of boy. It’s about helping each boy find his path, his purpose, and his place in the world. For one, that might mean excelling in mathematics; for another, it might be performing on stage, leading a team, or showing quiet kindness when it matters most.
As I look across our school, from our newest boys to those preparing to leave, I’m reminded daily that success isn’t something that happens at the end of the journey; it begins, as Plato said all those years ago, right here at the start.
At Medbury, success has a starting point. And for every boy, that starting point is now.

The Medbury ‘Transition to School Programme’ is designed to ensure that your son begins his school journey with confidence and a sense of belonging, as Junior School Dean Jane McGarry explains.
“Starting in the term before his official start date, your son is invited to participate in the Programme every Wednesday from 8:30 am to 10:30 am.
This tailored programme builds upon the skills and knowledge gained at preschool, while also familiarising your son with Medbury’s larger and more dynamic environment, which may differ significantly from the smaller, more intimate settings of preschool. Each session includes experiences in Music, Drama, Art, Physical Education, Digital Technologies, Science, Literacy and Numeracy, providing a taste of the rich learning opportunities at Medbury.
Your son will meet the specialist teachers of these subjects, fostering early relationships and helping him feel confident in his new surroundings. He will also explore and acclimate to the school’s new and larger spaces, ensuring a smooth transition into the broader Medbury environment.

To ease the transition, your son will be paired with a buddy from the current Year 1 class. This buddy will guide him in navigating the routines and expectations that embody the ‘Medbury Way,’ ensuring he feels comfortable and supported.
Throughout the programme, your son’s learning journey will be documented in a personalised ‘Transition to School Book.’ This booklet serves as a keepsake of his experiences, which he can proudly share with his preschool teachers and friends, bridging his transition from preschool to school.
The programme complements the two familiarisation days that your son will spend with his new entrant teacher and peers. Together, these experiences are designed to provide a seamless and supportive start to his schooling at Medbury.
To further aid this transition, we often visit your son’s preschool or connect directly with his preschool teacher to better understand his unique strengths and areas where additional support might be beneficial.
This collaborative approach ensures that we tailor his transition to school effectively. Additionally, preschool teachers are invited to visit the boys at Medbury, fostering continuity between the two environments and helping to ‘bridge the gap’.
Research has shown that strong connections between preschool and school significantly improve

children’s adjustment, engagement and academic success. According to the New Zealand Ministry of Education, effective transitions help children feel secure and confident as they adapt to new routines and expectations. By focusing on this critical period, we aim to set a strong foundation for your son’s journey at Medbury.”
Parents play a vital role in this transition. You can support your son by:
Establishing Routines: Begin implementing consistent morning and bedtime routines that mirror the school schedule to help your son adjust.
Encouraging Independence: Involve your son in preparing his school bag, dressing himself or managing small tasks to build confidence.
Familiarising him with Medbury: Talk positively about school, visit the grounds if possible and discuss the exciting activities he will experience.
Reinforcing Skills: Practice basic skills such as recognising his name, holding a pencil and using lunchbox items independently.
Collaborating with Teachers: Stay in regular communication with your son’s teacher to address any concerns and celebrate his milestones.
Making a positive start to school helps your son to develop his social, emotional, learning and independence skills, which all contribute to his well-being and happiness. Children who are happy in themselves and in their surroundings, are better able to meet life’s challenges. They are also better learners and have stronger relationships with their peers.
The Medbury ‘Transition to School Programme’ will enable your son to move seamlessly from preschool to primary school.

Sport is a vital part of life at Medbury School, where boys are encouraged to participate at a level that fosters both enjoyment and competition.
We believe that sport plays a crucial role in shaping the overall well-being of our students, aligning with the holistic values of the Medbury Graduate. Through sport, boys not only develop physical strength but also gain essential life skills such as leadership, teamwork, resilience, and selfconfidence.
Our approach to sport is guided by the concept of Hauora, a Maori philosophy that emphasizes the interconnected dimensions of well-being: Taha Tinana (physical), Taha Hinengaro (mental and emotional), Taha Whanau (family and social), and Taha Wairua (spiritual). By engaging in sports, our students build positive relationships, manage stress, and develop a positive self-image, all while learning to navigate both success and failure with grace.
Under the leadership of our Director of Sport, Medbury offers a wide range of sports, both traditional and modern, including specialist training through Sports Academies in Cricket, Hockey, Football, Rugby, and Tennis, where professional coaches provide age-specific guidance.
Additional extra-curricular options such as Basketball, Fencing, Karate, Cycling, Polo, Touch Rugby, and Water Polo allow boys to explore various interests while developing their skills. Over 90% of boys from Years 3 to 8 participate in Saturday sports, contributing to our strong sporting reputation. Medbury boys often receive regional and national recognition in various sports, and our history of inter-school exchanges with other independent schools in New Zealand and Australia provides further opportunities for growth and leadership.
As we continue to support our boys’ development, we prioritize their enjoyment and long-term love of physical activity. Our focus is on fostering an environment where learning, development, and enjoyment take precedence over the pressure to win. By encouraging a balanced approach to sport, we ensure that our boys are well-prepared to thrive in all aspects of life, both on and off the field.

"THROUGH SPORT, BOYS NOT ONLY DEVELOP PHYSICAL STRENGTH BUT ALSO GAIN ESSENTIAL LIFE SKILLS SUCH AS LEADERSHIP, TEAMWORK, RESILIENCE, AND SELF-CONFIDENCE."

Specialist sports training is available in the following sports, with age entry requirements depending on the academy:
Cricket
Hockey
Football
Rugby
Tennis
The academies are run by professional coaches and give the boys the opportunity to experience expert quality coaching in a professional environment. The academy training is additional to the coaching the boys will receive in their individual Medbury teams.
Basketball is a fun team sport that teaches the boys to work together and play off each others’ skills. Medbury fields teams in the local Basketball Competition, which is held after school at Pioneer Leisure Centre. Practices are held once a week during lunchtime.

Fencing is often described as ‘like a physical game of chess’. It takes strategy and quick reflexes. Fencing classes at Medbury are held after school and provide systematic training to develop young fencers’ full potential, with the aims of reaching national standards and representing Medbury at various competitions.

Medbury fields teams in the Saturday Mainland Football competition and some teams are involved in annual inter-school exchanges. Practice sessions are held at lunchtimes and also after school. Boys in Year 3 wanting to play football will need to join a local club.
Medbury fields teams in the Saturday hockey competition. The 1st XI will be involved in Saturday competition as well as our annual inter-school exchanges, and operate as one team for both. Hockey practice is held at lunchtimes and also after school.
Karate is a fun way for boys to achieve fitness and focus. Karate classes at Medbury are held after school, with the boys working towards their gradings and the opportunity to compete.
Polo allows boys to work on skills that make them and their horse more mentally and physically agile. Training is held on Friday afternoons after School and on Saturday mornings, when possible, at Waireka Polo Farm, Sefton, North Canterbury.
Medbury fields teams in the J.A.B. competition on Saturday mornings. The 1st XV will be involved in Saturday Competition as well as our annual inter-
school exchanges, and operate as one team for both. Rugby practice at school is held at lunchtimes and also after school.
Medbury plays summer Hockey in squads of 8 players, competing at Nunweek Park in Terms 1 and 4.
Senior boys and selected Middle School players can trial for the Top 8 Tennis Team during the first term each year. The team plays mid-week fixtures against other independent schools during the year and also represents the School in North Island Tours.
Touch Rugby is one full-on burst of energy! During Terms 1 and 4, boys in Years 7 and 8 can play Touch rugby, competing each week at St Andrew’s College.
Playing Water Polo develops fitness in a low impact sport. At Medbury, Senior boys can play Water Polo during Terms 1 and 4. Games are played on Friday nights at Jellie Park, with practices taking place in the Selwyn House school pool.

At Medbury School, the Arts play a central role in shaping well-rounded students, with a strong emphasis on Music, Visual Arts, and Drama. Our programmes inspire creativity, foster individual expression, and build confidence within a supportive environment.
Medbury has an outstanding reputation for its comprehensive music programme, which includes choral and instrumental training. Led by our Director of Music and a team of highly qualified tutors, the programme provides every boy with a rich musical experience. From Year 4, boys can access instrumental tuition, with younger students considered on a case-by-case basis. Our purpose-built music facilities in The Medbury Centre include soundproofed rooms, a keyboard laboratory, and a performance auditorium.
Performance is key, with boys participating in choirs, orchestras, and ensembles. Our three choirs perform at school events, festivals, and competitions. Instrumental groups, including the Medbury Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, Rock Bands, and Jazz Band, provide additional opportunities for boys to showcase their talents. Instrumental tuition covers a wide range of instruments, including Bagpipes, Cello, Clarinet, Drums, Flute, French Horn, Guitar, Piano, Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet, Violin, and Vocal training.
Medbury’s partnership with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO) through the Centre of Excellence for Music enhances the programme, allowing boys to refine their skills under world-class musicians and participate in interactive workshops. Leadership opportunities are available through roles such as CSO Ambassadors and the NXT Gen Think Tank.
Art education at Medbury nurtures creativity and individual expression across all year levels. Boys receive regular art instruction, with boys enjoying classes in a dedicated Art Room. They explore various media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and design. Medbury students regularly exhibit their work both within the school and in wider community exhibitions and competitions. Visits to Christchurch Art Galleries and studies of New Zealand and international artists are integral to the programme.
Medbury has a strong tradition in drama, offering boys opportunities to explore creativity through play, movement, and performance. Regular dance and drama lessons, led by our Head of Drama, are integrated into the curriculum, building confidence in expression and teamwork. Class performances are a highlight, and the Year 8 Production combines music and drama in an exciting showcase. Boys can also join Theatresports teams, where they develop improvisation skills in a fun, competitive environment. Additionally, they can opt for extra speech and drama lessons, covering public speaking, storytelling, and poetry, preparing them for Trinity-Guildhall and Speech NZ exams.
Medbury’s links with amateur and professional theatres further enrich boys’ experiences in the dramatic arts.
This Arts programme is part of Medbury's commitment to offering a holistic education, fostering a lifelong appreciation for the arts, and nurturing the next generation of creative thinkers and performers.

Medbury's Leadership and Service Programme is designed to cultivate the character and values of our boys, emphasising leadership as a form of service to others.
Grounded in Medbury’s core values of integrity, empathy, respect, and excellence, this programme teaches boys the importance of putting others first, giving time and effort to meet the needs of others, and always striving to do the right thing.
The programme is structured into three key components: Integrated Learning, Pillar Programmes, and Sustained Programmes. Integrated Learning ensures that leadership and service principles are woven into every aspect of the school experience, making them an integral part of daily life for all students and staff. Pillar Programmes focus on year groupspecific events, such as the Whole School Community Service Day, Year 5 Leadership Day, and the Year 6 Leadership Programme, each designed to instill a deep understanding of leadership as service.
Sustained Programmes extend throughout the year, offering long-term opportunities for boys to engage with leadership and service. These include the Community Service Award for Years 4, 5, and 6, the William Pike Challenge Award for Year 7, MED-X Talks that provide insights into leadership from guest speakers, and the Year 8 Mentoring Programme, which supports our senior boys in building resilience and self-confidence.
Under the leadership of Richard Wilson, who brings a wealth of experience from his background in the UK armed forces, the programme equips boys with the tools and mindset necessary to become empathetic, socially conscious leaders who will positively impact their communities.

Our leadership and service ethos is for every single boy and every single member of staff. It is part of the fabric of the School. In our teachings, we will embed the leadership ethos and core values.
The pillar programmes are year group-specific major programmes or events with specific learning outcomes, ranging from one day to three weeks.
The sustained programmes will last for at least one term, with the majority being up to one year.
Medbury’s Leadership and Service Programme is designed primarily to assist in character development of the boys.
The overall ethos of leadership within Medbury is one that sees leadership as service to others, as the giving of time and effort to further the needs of others, putting others first, and doing the right thing.
Alongside our four core values of integrity, empathy, respect and excellence, the leadership and service programme is the vehicle by which this will be conveyed and, where appropriate, taught to the boys.
Some components of the programme run across all year groups, with some concentrating on specific year groups.
Leadership and Service at Medbury consist of three main elements. These are Integrated Learning, Pillar Programmes and Sustained Programmes.

Equipping boys with the tools and mindset needed to become empathetic, socially conscious leaders who positively impact their communities.
Helping the boys develop a range of skills, including collaboration, conflict resolution, self-confidence and self-esteem.

At Medbury School, our extracurricular programme is designed to complement academic growth and enhance each boy's unique talents.
We believe that engaging in these activities helps build essential skills, confidence, and friendships, which is why we encourage every student to join at least one activity each term.
Our diverse options include the Chess Club for strategic thinkers, the Drama Troupe for budding performers, and Hip Hop for dance enthusiasts. The RoboProgers club offers hands-on experience with robotics and coding, while Spanish and Mandarin lessons provide early language acquisition. Other activities include Speech and Drama lessons, Kapa Haka performances, and creative pursuits in the Models Club and Gardening Club. Boys interested in engineering and problem-solving can participate in the EPro8 Challenge and Robocup competitions.
With such a broad range of extracurricular opportunities, Medbury ensures that every boy can discover new interests, develop valuable skills, and enjoy a well-rounded education beyond the classroom.

BUILDING SKILLS, CONFIDENCE AND FRIENDSHIPS.

Chess Club gives boys the opportunity to learn to play and improve their chess, to sit NZ Chess Federation and Canterbury Chess Club Grading Badges and to play friendly or competitive games in local competitions. Chess Club caters for all levels, from beginner to budding Grandmaster. The aim is to improve boys’ appreciation of chess strategy and develop their skills and enjoyment of the game. Registrations are for a full year.
Drama Troupe offers boys the opportunity to develop their creativity through various drama and dance improvisations, text exploration and scene development. Registrations are for a full year.
At Medbury School, the extra-curricular programme complements the academic programme by extending the individual capacities and talents of each boy.
Activities have been planned to engage a variety of interests - sporting, cultural, competitive and non-competitive - to meet the diverse needs of our energetic and enthusiastic student community. We believe that participation in extra-curricular activities will help him develop his skills and confidence, and provide him with opportunities to develop existing and new friendships.
The activities on offer cater for boys who are very competent and competitive, through to those who are beginners and want to be involved. I encourage all boys to involve themselves in at least one activity each term.

In this club the boys have fun exploring robotic programming and building using Mindstorm robots, coding with other software such as Tynker and Scratch, and exploring other areas such as electronic circuits and iPhone/iPad programming. It involves problem solving, working as teams, using animation skills, designing and producing games and responding to challenges. There is also the opportunity to compete and represent Medbury in the annual RoboCup Junior NZ competition.
Speech and Drama lessons at Medbury cover oral communication (both artistic and practical), drama (both scripted and improvised), public speaking, reading aloud, storytelling, different courtesy exercises (such as introducing people to others), voice production, the skill of puppetry and the endangered art of reciting poetry. The lessons are conducted in small groups of 2 to 3 boys during lesson time and the boys work towards both Trinity-Guildhall and Speech NZ examinations.
It’s energetic, physical and disciplined! Participants are tutored by a guest tutor, learning pieces to perform at school events.
The Kapa Haka group at Medbury School performs at a range of School assemblies, sporting events such as inter-school sports exchanges and cultural events such as the annual Music Extravaganza.
The Models Club provides an opportunity for boys to construct and paint a range of models of their choice. We have had a range of models made over the years, from traditional planes, tanks and vehicles, to ‘Lord of the Rings’ figures and ‘War Hammer’ figures. A selection of paints, glues and cutting materials are available for boys to use, or they can bring their own.
Boys can learn Spanish and Mandarin from beginner to advanced level at Medbury. Learning a second language at an early age benefits children in many ways.
A BOY WITH VALUES IS A BOY SET FOR LIFE.

AT MEDBURY, THE WELLBEING OF EVERY BOY IS PARAMOUNT.
Our approach ensures every student feels supported and valued, equipped for success both academically and personally.
Boys are placed in Houses that foster belonging and camaraderie. This system encourages older boys to mentor younger ones, promoting leadership, empathy, and responsibility, while also nurturing healthy competition and lasting connections.
Medbury’s pastoral care includes support from both teaching and nonteaching staff. Our mentoring programme links boys across year groups, offering a network of peers and adults for guidance, helping them navigate their school journey with confidence.
Our on-site School Counsellor offers confidential support through SolutionFocused Therapy, helping boys build on their strengths to set and achieve personal goals.
Our “Where We Thrive” Wellbeing Framework integrates positive relationships and emotional resilience into our vision for learning. We monitor wellbeing school-wide, ensuring every student has the resources to flourish.
The Medbury Family is made up of several organisations which work together for the benefit and development of the School and its boys:
The Medbury School Trust Board
The Medbury School Parents’ Association
The Medbury School Old Boys’ Association
The Medbury School Foundation.
These groups each have a role to play, and are paramount in:
Building for the future
Ensuring that high quality facilities and grounds are available
Providing resources
