Open letter to the European Commission, the Heads of State and Government of the EU Member States, and the Members of the European Parliament From the organisations delivering Europe’s environmental and climate action on the ground We, the undersigned organisations, beneficiaries of the European Union’s LIFE Programme over recent years, write to you as organisations working on the ground to turn European policy into tangible results across territories, ecosystems and communities. Across Europe, we have restored wetlands and forests, protected endangered species, reduced emissions, supported farmers and local authorities, and demonstrated innovative solutions that have later been scaled up through European and national policies. This is not a theoretical impact; it is measurable, replicable and rooted in the territories. This is what LIFE makes possible.
A proven instrument at risk We are deeply concerned by ongoing discussions on the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2028–2034, which could weaken or fragment the LIFE Programme by integrating it into broader funding mechanisms. From our direct experience, such a shift would not be a technical adjustment, it would fundamentally alter how Europe delivers its environmental and climate objectives.
