Welcome to another fantastic edition of 33Thirty! As we head into autumn, the cooler weather and shorter days are upon us, although it’s not quite time to brace for winter yet!

W

e had a glorious summer across the district with another world class Taupō Summer Concert event, Salmonella Dub playing at Owen Delany Park as part of their 25th anniversary celebrations and other festivals, such as Waitangi ki Tūwharetoa and Kinstock in the Kinloch community. And that’s only on the music front!

Whether you’re a visitor, reside within our district, or are simply travelling through, I hope this year has started in a positive way. Here in Taupō we pride ourselves as being known as the Events Capital of New Zealand and enjoy hosting all who visit here. This translates into the sustained growth our local economy has experienced, our tourism expenditure up 11 percent on last year’s figures, with guest nights in commercial accommodation rising by 5.4 percent, nearly double the national average of 3.8 percent.

The Taupō District is more than the scenic location we all get to enjoy, with outdoor activities like skydiving, mountain-biking, boat charters, swimming and walking in the great outdoors. We have an abundance of events scheduled over the coming year, from concerts and markets to sporting events and theatre, we really do have something for everyone. There are several options for accommodation to fit all tastes and budgets as well as a brilliant array of restaurants and cafes to choose from.

Launched in 2016, over 5,000 people participated in Easterfest’s first year, growing to more than 8,000 in 2017! Now with 2018 preparations underway, the event is expecting an even bigger crowd of locals and visitors this year.

From expressing Easter through a series of paintings to interactive exhibits to TED-type talks by special guests, there’s opportunities for our community, families and new generation to learn about Easter in all sorts of specific forms.

Destination Great Lake Taupō (DGLT) is the Regional Tourism Organisation for the Taupō district.

We are responsible for marketing the Taupō district to domestic and international markets with the aim of increasing visitor numbers and spend.

Towncentre Taupō (TCT) represents the interests of every business in the Taupō central business district. Our aim is to promote the development of Taupō's town centre as a safe and vibrant community while retaining its unique identity.

Taupō Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Our role is to promote, support and encourage sustainable, profitable business growth.

Events Capital – We support the events industry to run both commercial and community events by offering support that includes infrastructure, venues, advice, equipment, promotion and funding.

Autumn Cycling Campaign Destination Great Lake Taupō (DGLT) has launched its autumn campaign focused on cycling and mountain biking as a means for attracting visitors to the region for a short break.

A

nna McLaren, Marketing and Communications Manager says the campaign is all about positioning Taupo as the biggest riding hub in the North Island: “We have such a broad range of cycling trails available in and around Taupō, from grade 1-2 family and e-bike trails, to cross-country trails, mountain bike parks and BMX jump parks to epic overnight adventures and grade 5 downhill, there’s something for everyone in this region”.

The campaign will profile the ease with which visitors can ride world-class trails then experience activities like sailing, jetboating, rafting, and bungy jumping all in one day – topped off by local craft beers and natural geothermal hot pools as the sun goes down.

“It’s not only the world-class riding on offer, but also the ‘apres-bike’ experience that makes Taupō such a special and unique cycling destination”.

DGLT aims to promote the region’s volcanic pumice soil which keeps the ground relatively dry and mud-free throughout the rainy season, making

outdoor activities like mountain biking, golfing and bush walking more viable than in other regions during autumn.

DGLT hopes to encourage those who want to try cycling to come to Taupō and give it a go. The ease of getting organised to go cycling will be highlighted, from hiring a bike from a local bike shop to cruising along the easy lakefront Great Lake Walkway or getting a shuttle to the Great Lake Trail for a mountain biking adventure.

Campaign activity will include a video series about local characters who enjoy cycling, holiday packages that can be booked online, digital marketing activity and a range of online articles related to autumn activities.

A Thriving Economy If you thought things were humming around the district before Christmas, you were right!

T

he spending statistics for the December 2017 quarter show record spending in the Taupō District, with total spending up 8.2% compared to the same period last year. Whilst the pre-Christmas period is always a busy retail time – it is always challenging to build the sales amount, and the number of transactions, year on year.

Our Taupō community demonstrated their loyalty and commitment to shopping locally in the Christmas shopping peak period too, with 70% of their total spend done locally. The New Zealand wide average is 64% spent locally, so thanks to the Taupō community for keeping our local economy pumping!

The biggest retail week for the quarter was the week before Christmas, with a massive $150m spent locally that week! This was then backed up the following week, with another $130m through the tills

around the district up to New Year’s Eve. This is always our busiest time of the year – an average week is between $80 and $90m, so it’s a big jump.

Turangi has had a massive increase of 16.1% compared to the same quarter last year. The central Turangi area had over $10m in spend (up 14% on last year) and the remaining $6m was spent across the Turangi area with big increases in the industrial and northern precincts.

The spending statistics are provided by Marketview and represent the total value of electronic card retail transactions.

About 70% of all retail spending is paid by electronic card so these figures provide a good indication of how our local economy is doing.

The Best in Customer Experience

T

owncentre Taupō is bringing back the Stella Awards for Excellent Customer Experience in 2018 with Spark Business returning as the principal sponsor. The Spark Stella Awards empower the region’s front-line staff to deliver first class customer experiences in every sector of the Great Lake Taupō economy.

The programme aims to enhance the experience of visiting, shopping, dining and living in the district by up-skilling frontline teams. Information and training will once again be delivered through a series of workshops in a fun, engaging manner in an effort to motivate both frontline staff and business owners.

Workshop topics include customer service, personal development, business savvy, and general knowledge of the region. The importance of team members

working together and doing their part well is also a focus. This will assist frontline staff to encourage customers to stay longer and spend more in our local economy.

Rewarding star performers The Spark Stella Awards programme will be open to all businesses throughout the Taupō District. It will be launched in May, followed by the workshops series in May and June. A mystery shop will be included in the judging process for all business teams that enter.

The Awards culminate with a Gala Dinner Event at the Great Lake Centre where winning star performers and winning teams will be rewarded with cash and prizes for their efforts, as well as the title of best in their industry.

While Destination Great Lake Taupō’s autumn campaign is all about showing potential visitors how easy it is to cycle in the region, they would also love to see locals taking advantage of the cycling opportunities that surround them.

T

he beauty of cycling around the Taupō region is that you don’t have to be an experienced cyclist to get out and enjoy the trails. Anna McLaren from Destination Great Lake Taupō says there are a range of places beginner cyclists can ride that are scenic and easy to get to.

“A great place to start is the lakefront Great Lake Walkway, known locally as the Lion’s Walk, which has been voted New Zealand’s best urban ride two years in a row. It’s an easy, paved walking and cycling path that stretches all the way from Taupo’s Boat Harbour to Five Mile Bay. We’re so lucky to have this asset on our doorstep and it would be great to see

more locals out there enjoying it. Even if you don’t own a bike, it’s easy to pop into town, hire a bike and helmet from one of our local bike shops and ride down to the lakefront.”

Beyond urban rides For those who want to venture further off the beaten track, the Tongariro River Trail is a great introduction to mountain biking. Suitable for beginners, the 15 kilometre loop trail traverses the banks of the Tongariro River between Turangi and Red Hut bridge, taking in native bush, farmland and river views.

School holiday treasure hunt To encourage locals to get out on their bikes, especially with the whole family, Towncentre Taupō will be setting up a ‘Red Bike Treasure Hunt’ to coincide with the April school holidays. Ten red bikes will be hidden along a cycling route on and around the Great Lake Walkway.

Treasure hunters will need to cycle the route, collect the ten unique codes from each bike, then write these on an entry form to go in the draw to win a range of prizes. Details of the Red Bike Treasure Hunt will be on GreatLakeTaupo.com closer to the time.

here’s every reason to put trout fishing on your bucket list, because since moving to Taupo, I’ve discovered it’s not just me who’s never tried it. With this beautiful big lake on our doorstep, many of us ‘locals’ have never ventured out – so this one’s for people like me; never done it, don’t know how, and need some encouragement to jump in and try!

This is an especially good one for Autumn because our trout are at their biggest and the waters are so much emptier now that there are fewer visitors.

If you’ve never trout fished before then the first thing to decide is boat fishing or fly fishing?

Before buying your own equipment and venturing out on your own, give it a go first with a fishing charter. That way you’ll learn from the experts about what’s involved, techniques, safety rules and everything else you didn’t realise you needed to know. Plus, all the fishing equipment is supplied. Boat fishing (with all the right gear) is a relaxing way to catch trout. Fly fishing (perfect for Autumn/Winter) can be just as relaxing, but it’s you in the river ‘stalking’ your trout – a professional guide will teach you the skill of casting the rod, getting it in the perfect spot so that you can land your trout. Hugely rewarding! With practice and guidance, you will feel much more confident on your own and be able to decide if you want to take your new hobby further.

If you prefer to go independent, I would still recommend getting some advice – easily available from local fishing or outdoor equipment shops.

• If you want to keep your catch, the minimum length is 40cm. Undersized fish have to go back.

• Every angler must have a valid fishing licence – you can purchase this from your skipper or guide on the day, or local petrol stations or sports shops.

Cook your catch If you’re lucky enough to catch a trout, most restaurants in Taupo will happily cook it for you. Make sure you check with them in advance and have your fishing licence handy.

Managing Taupō’s Growth L

ike many other regions, Taupō is booming with house construction and marked increases in the housing market.

But this growth leads to pressure on social, education, health services and infrastructure.

To address this pressure on the market in the next 10 years, the Council’s coming 2018 Long Term Plan (LTP) and growth modelling will soon be available for public consultation and submission.

What are the key topics you need to be aware of?

Transport Growth can push forward roading improvements. Although many of our roads are satisfactory, we’ll be interested in the Council’s report on the Wairakei Drive, Norman Smith and Spa Road intersections. They may also propose widening rural road berms and/or intersection upgrades, these will be outlined in the LTP.

Infrastructure Infrastructure expansion needs to be based around demand from residential and commercial/industrial development.

To eCommerce or not to eCommerce – that is the question Shoppers today are so well informed with unlimited access to product information, reviews, and even unboxing videos that when they have made the decision to buy they probably know more about the products than the shop assistants.

No wonder many of us turn to online shopping.

ith eCommerce growing in popularity every year, and thanks to the ease of online shopping today, using an eCommerce platform to grow your business has never been easier.

It is important however not to just jump in without knowing what lurks beneath the murky water and assume there aren’t dangerous animals in little old NZ – the online ocean is huge with sharks packing a serious punch. Don't assume that simply starting an eCommerce business will have the clickers flying through your store – unless of course you are extremely lucky, or you have a very unique product. Get it right though and the rewards are there.

So what should you consider when deciding whether to trade online?

Market research This one is obvious, but you will be surprised how many people don’t do enough of it. There is no point trading online if you are competing against a multi-million-dollar powerhouse that can supply a larger range, better pricing, customer benefits and is already the established household name, and you try and take them on with a budget of $2000 for a website, marketing, brand etc. Go back to the drawing board and write up a better savings plan.

Market, market and then market with a sprinkle of marketing

Don’t just look good, look great We have all been on websites that are just plain naff – you know the ones where no matter the amount of lipstick, the pig aint gonna have any takers. You need something professionally designed that appeals to the demographic and target market you are selling to. First impressions are everything and you are being judged by your cover – trust me. Have access to great imagery because those photos you took on your phone with poor lighting will need some lipstick too.

Make sense and try not to be too clever Unless you are Mark Zuckerberg, people spend more time on every other website than yours. So don’t try and be too different and use strange menu labelling or make your checkout workflow different to everyone else’s. Humans feel comfortable with familiarity and will soon click back to the Google results page if they feel lost.

No one is going to find your fantastic looking website full of everything you know they want if they can’t find you.

Maybe they don’t even know they need your products so you need to find them.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), Google AdWords and Facebook among other things are your online virtual shopping mall. Use these tools to entice people through your doors and then lead them through a beautiful experience of shopping with a dusting of upsells and cross-sells.

Analyse, track and refine Ever feel like you are being watched while you are online? You can watch your site visitors too. Amongst other things know the most popular products for gender and age group, what pages are working and what are not, know your conversion rate. You can then use this data to refine your online store – your website is not finished the moment you go live. The best and most successful ones out there use the data available to them and refine.

Where they differ is who they are aimed at and what you are selling. Among many other factors, you can safely say that if you only have a handful of products with simple variants then hit Shopify, but if you need more complex variants with 100’s of products then go for WooCommerce.

Terenzo Bozzone:

Ironman World Champion

W

hile the town is busy counting down the days and getting ready in support of the many athletes who will participate this year, we took the chance to catch up with Terenzo on the event, his experience, achievements and what it’s like competing in Taupo.

How did you get into Ironman?

I’ve always been swimming since I was a child, but after a popped eardrum while wakeboarding when I was 13 I had to take a break from swimming and started duathlon. It was then I realised how much I enjoyed multi-sport activities and got into triathlon later on. I started with Duathlon World Championships, Junior Men’s Elite Triathlon World Championships, The Half Ironman World Championships and used those as stepping stones to move on to

Full Ironman. I’ve been competing every year since 2009 and got my first victory in Australia in 2016.

Tell us about your experience racing in Taupo.

Competing in Taupo is much more difficult than anywhere else in the world because of the nature of the course. We’ve got rough roads, so tougher runs, and less buoyancy in freshwater making the swim choppier. Us kiwis do have an advantage with our training and practice in Taupo.

What have been the challenges over the years?

Dealing with injuries that come with continuing to push boundaries, and staying resilient during tough times.

Because I’m constantly exercising, my immune system is also suppressed, so I have to be more careful about staying on top of my body, focusing on health, hygiene and regular body therapy.

Any advice to future triathletes?

If kids are interested, start them early in events like the Kiwi Kids Triathlon. When I came to NZ I was already too old to participate, but it’s a great start for kids to learn about things like balance, resilience, strength, and health and fitness from an early age.

What do you love most about competing in Taupo?

How much the town gets behind all the events. It’s amazing to see the support from the locals and the amount of people who visit the town just to cheer us on.

After Ironman, I’m heading to Central America, then Cairns in June and Hawaii in October for more marathons.

nfluenza, commonly called the flu, can be a serious illness, and the best protection is to get an annual flu vaccine.

Why do you need it at this time of year?

It takes 2 weeks for your bodies to provide the protection from the flu vaccine so you need to start as soon as possible, ensuring you’re protected sooner and have lower chances of spreading it.

The flu vaccine covers you from now (March/April) until March next year – the vaccine changes every year because the virus does too. If you’re vaccinated later in the season, you won’t be protected for any longer, but remember it’s never too late.

What are the benefits?

• The flu vaccine is the best way to reduce your risk of getting sick with the flu. It’s not only protecting you but your loved ones and anyone that is not able to get the vaccine because of age or immune disorders.

• Getting the vaccine can reduce the risk of flu based hospitalisations for children and adults, helps protect women during and after pregnancy (even the baby after birth), is a preventative tool for chronic health conditions and can make an illness milder if you do get sick.

• Being fit, healthy and on immune support products will not prevent you from getting the flu, only the vaccine

gives you true protection. Influenza can be fatal to you, and to members of your family if it spreads.

People are urged to listen to their doctors, pharmacists and 222 years of scientific research with regards to vaccinations.

Head Chef Francis Whitcombe, head chef at Lakeland House since 2005, took over the business with Natasha Whitcombe in 2010, and is loving putting his personality into the restaurant and its cuisine.

tarting in the industry as an apprentice, Francis has gained experience working in many parts of the country, before moving to Turangi and starting at Lakeland House in 2005. He has a love for all things food, and is known for his generous portions, and great service, bringing customers back over and over again.

What are your strengths?

In terms of running the restaurant; leadership, being organised and being proactive. It can get really busy in some periods and during events, so I’ve learnt to juggle many tasks all at once and still create something great at the end.

What inspires your menu?

What do the customers love?

The fresh snapper, seafood chowder, seafood teaser, lamb and venison. These have become the favourites and are often the most repeated orders.

What’s the most rewarding part of the job?

Seeing the restaurant succeed and grow every year. We have such loyal customers, some since we started in 2005, and new visitors who have just become fans. It feels so satisfying to see how my work makes a difference to someone’s holiday or night out.

Also, working here has become a social life for me, the staff feel like family. I love to see my team grow, learn and move on.

I try to include what I like, for example I love Thai food, and I’ve brought those flavours into a couple of the dishes.

Spanish Chicken with Chorizo and Potatoes This dish is super easy and delicious – literally just throw everything into an oven dish and you’re ready to go.

You can also get as creative as you like with the vegetables you use, see our tips below.

Ingredients

• 3 tablespoons regular olive oil • 12 chicken thighs (bone in, with skin BUT it works with skinless, boneless thighs too) • 750 grams chorizo sausages, whole if baby ones, or cut into 4-cm chunks if regular-sized • 1 kilogram baby potatoes, half the larger ones • 2 red onions, peeled and roughly chopped • 2 teaspoons dried oregano • grated zest of one orange • salt to taste

Preheat the oven to 190°C

Serves 6

Put the oil in the bottom of the roasting tins (grease proof paper a good idea).

Rub the skin of the chicken in the oil, season with salt accordingly, then turn them skin-side up, 6 pieces in each tin.

Cut and add the chorizo sausages and new potatoes (and any other vegetables you want to add). Toss in the oil, so all vegetables are covered. Note, if you have added extra vegetables you may need more oil.

Next sprinkle in the onion and oregano, then grate the orange zest over top.

Cook for 45-60 minutes, baste the chicken halfway through with the orangecoloured juices and turn the vegetables.

Serve as is or pair with a simple rocket salad.

Balsamic glaze can be added for that little bit extra – if you need it.

Whether you buy it from your favourite cafe or make your own every morning, the perfect cup of coffee sets your mood for the rest of the day.

ot only your morning kick, it’s also the perfect icebreaker, date, business meeting, treat, time out, or any other reason you can think of – which is what makes it so special. With New Zealand’s coffee-forward culture, our most common invitation “let’s meet for coffee” and our love for flat whites, we’ve become a huge coffee-drinking nation.

We even created the flat white which then spread to the rest of the world.

So coffee is a big deal for us.

But what makes that cup the ‘perfect’ one?

Fresh Beans Fresh coffee beans are crucial to making the perfect cup. Because once roasted, they begin oxidising almost immediately, start losing flavour, and at best, last two weeks to one month. Think of roasted coffee like a fruit bowl, it’s a fresh product so will not be at its best after more than a couple of weeks. Keeping about a fortnight’s supply is probably the best way to go. A local coffee roasting company like Volcanic Coffee can keep you supplied with fresh, great tasting coffee – they know what you love and ensure you get excellent coffee every time.

Have you ever noticed the one-way valve on your packaged coffee when you buy it from the supermarket? That’s there to keep it as fresh as possible. The valve allows carbon dioxide to escape as it builds inside but doesn’t let any oxygen in.

Clean Water Coffee experts will know that the minerals in clean, filtered water are essential for great coffee. The perfect temperature to use: 93 degrees, any hotter and it will burn the coffee, making it bitter.

Milk While it makes for great latte art, texture and foam toppings, the quality of milk can vary the taste incredibly. Using milk softens or disguises the coffee, weakening the taste if you’re not into strong coffee.

Full cream milk carries the flavour of the coffee the best, and is most commonly used, giving your cup a balance of flavour, texture and consistency, with a sweeter taste than other milks. Low fat milk has more protein but gives the coffee less body and skim milk has no fat but is also not as flavourful.

Technique 30 to 50 percent of the perfect cup is all in the technique, which is why so many of us prefer barista-made. Baristas know exactly how much coffee to use, how to grind it and how long to extract it for it

to reach perfection. If it’s extracted two seconds too long for instance, it’s going to lose its flavour completely. You’ll notice baristas normally grind the beans right at the time of brewing, that’s because once ground, coffee starts losing quality almost immediately, just another technique to keep your cup fresh and full of flavour.

Ambience Your surroundings while you enjoy your coffee are just as important as what goes into making it, and everyone loves a great café. Taupo especially has one of the best café cultures in the region, with superb coffee, quality food and funky cafes.

Do you have a boring room in need of a rescue, or are you bored and in need of a project? Maybe you don’t know where to start or what you need? Sometimes all it takes is a few simple tweaks to completely spruce up a room. So we’ve found some easy ideas to help you get started and give your space that new look.

Paint New paint, whether it’s on all the walls, a feature wall, or something subtle like doors or frames, can set the tone of your room. Bright colours can awaken a dull space and dark colours can underline and emphasise.

Think about adding a little bit of contrast in colour to the window frames for example. The dark tones can add a focal point and make those features pop, while tidying up the look of your room.

Remember, paint can be used anywhere – your headboard, pillows, wardrobe, lampshades, the list goes on.

Artwork Finding paintings that fit your style or budget can be difficult, but it’s just as easy to make your own, or mix up the displays on your walls with family photos or children’s art. Create a picture ledge or use shelves if you’re not able to use the walls.

Indoor Plants Small changes can have a big impact, and even a pot plant anywhere can add life, texture and a natural element to a room.

If you’re worried it might just sit there and die, there are many houseplants like Snake plant and Bamboo that take very little maintenance. Try something with dark green leaves, they give a striking look against light backgrounds.

Furniture Rearranging furniture completely changes dynamics of a room and gives it a new vibe. Try using different angles for placement to add some sophistication. Or if you feel like redoing the furniture completely, whether it’s to hide the old look or give it a refresh, upcycling can revive your old chairs, sofas, tables or any fittings, such as new covers for a sofa or layer of paint over an old table.

Curtains Old curtains can let your room down, yet it’s one of the features that can really make your space feel bigger and brighter, especially by accentuating the height of a room and bringing in different hues of light depending on colours. Trim, tassel or fabric panels add that extra charm.

Lighting There’s so many different ways to alter the lighting in a room – from changing covers and lampshades to new placement, like wall-mounted lamps instead of table lamps. Adding extra sources of light can make your room feel much more open and airy, plus it adds instant ambience.

An interesting way to add some drama and punctuation is by changing lampshades to black, creating a whole new look. Great or different lighting can totally reinvent a space!
