Spring is in the Air

It’s good to see spring has sprung here in the Taupō District. Once again we are looking forward to a fantastic summer with a number of events on the calendar and some warmer weather on the way.

It is easy to get bogged down in the negative during the dreariness of winter but this year there has not been much really to get down about.

There has been lots of activity on the mountains with the new Ruapehu Alpine Lifts initiative drawing in lots of people both to Taupō and other surrounding

districts, and our main townships have been bustling almost every weekend with people making the most of what we have to offer.

Taupō District Council has recently relocated the staff who work in the Lake Terrace office to Taupō’s CBD too which has added another dimension of vibrancy to our main retail precinct.

Building has also been booming!

In July, there were 40 new houses built in the district and another seven demolished and rebuilt which is the highest level of activity we have seen for some time. While total numbers are still being confirmed, figures to the end of June showed 109 building consents were issued with a total value of $168.9 million.

As a council we have a strong focus on promoting economic development and ensuring the Taupō District remains a great place to live so it is heartening to see things moving along at a great rate. It also means the secret’s out about how great our place is and it is likely we will continue development for the next

wee while at least with a number of subdivisions being developed in and around the district.

Looking forward, it seems there is another events season to remember on the horizon. Events kick off again in earnest this month with hockey and football teams from around the country descending on us for the New Zealand Secondary Schools tournament, the Jock Hobbs Under-19 Rugby featuring developmental age group players from 16 provincial teams, the Tuwharetoa Kapa Haka Festival and the Global Games. Destination Great Lake Taupō (DGLT) is the Regional Tourism Organisation for the Taupō district.

We are responsible for marketing the Taupō district to domestic and international markets with the aim of increasing visitor numbers and spend.

Towncentre Taupō (TCT) represents the interests of every business in Taupō central business district. Our aim is to promote the development of Taupō's town centre as a safe and vibrant community while retaining its unique identity.

Taupō Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Our role is to promote, support and encourage sustainable, profitable business growth.

Events Capital – We support the events industry to run both commercial and community events by offering support that includes infrastructure, venues, advice, equipment, promotion and funding.

Campaign Activity Improves Retail Spend Recent campaign activity focused on attracting out-of-town visitors to Taupō's town centre is considered a factor in the increase in retail spend for the second quarter of this year.

D

uring this successful quarter, Towncentre Taupō ran the Shop in Taupō scratchy card campaign alongside Destination Great Lake Taupō's autumn campaign. This included print advertising in selected regions and promotion through social media channels.

Dedicated editorial in the Hawkes Bay Today featured Taupō's boutique shopping experience and the Shop in Taupō campaign. This appears to have had a real impact on retail spend in our region by visitors from Hawkes Bay with spend by this group up 19.4% on the same quarter last year.

Apparel retail spend (by visitors from all regions) was up 7.7%, a much-improved performance from the previous quarter when there was only a 1% increase.

The greatest increase in spend was by international visitors, up 35.8%. This is

no doubt a direct result of the surge in international visitors during the Lions Tour, but also a reflection of the overall increase in international visitor numbers to our region in the past year, a trend that can be seen nationally.

Local loyalty Taupō residents continue to show a high level of loyalty to shopping locally, with local cardholders spending 70% at local merchants. This is higher than the New Zealand average of 64.9%.

How do we stack up compared to other regions?

Overall, the Taupō district had the second highest level of growth within our competitor group of Nelson, Rotorua, Napier, Thames and Queenstown (Queenstown had the highest growth) for the second quarter of 2017. We were second in recreational spend, only just shy of Rotorua, and we beat all other competitors in spend on accommodation and hardware/homewares.

Street Artists Return to Taupō

I

never expected the event to have this type of longevity when I applied for the job to curate the festival after spotting it advertised online in 2011. But it also shouldn’t surprise me given I’ve been a believer in the transformative power of public art for a long time now.

While festivals of this nature now feature right around the country, the 120 or so pieces created within Graffiato over the years represents the widest ranging and most comprehensive survey of New Zealand artists working in this field. No other city has such a rich collection of

walls where you can see the breadth of talent and vision that resides within our country.

This collection will further expand in October when 10 more artists meet in Taupō to make their contribution.

Featuring a mix of returning artists and those making their Graffiato debut, we can expect to see a range of diverse and exciting works being painted over the course of the long weekend. Make a point of catching the artists in action, it’ll lend new insight into what could be your new favourite artwork.

This Labour Weekend Graffiato will be back in town for the seventh time making it the longest running festival of its kind in New Zealand.

Favourite works With so many pieces created over the years I could have a different favourite for each time I’m asked. In this case I’ve picked the piece by the brothers Marty and Elliot (aka Roach and Numskull) painted in 2012. I’m a sucker for hand drawn lettering and I also really respond to the pop culture reference regarding Ghostbusters.

Snow Season in Full Swing

D

GLT kicked off their winter marketing this year with a comprehensive domestic campaign promoting the region as a top winter ski holiday destination.

The campaign promotes ski and snow experiences alongside other winter activities in the region.

Developments at Whakapapa this year include the new Delta Chair (replacing the Waterfall T Bar) for intermediate skiers and boarders, and the new Schuss Haus Corona Bar at Hutt Flat. The Corona Bar is tipped to be the top social spot on the mountain with music, cold beer and Mexican food. Night skiing on Friday and Saturday nights (weather permitting) has also been introduced in 2017 with

Lorenz’s Bar and Café open late serving woodfired pizzas and mulled wine.

A premier ski destination RAL has created a snow presence in Taupō, with the development of two new outlets in the town centre – Snow Depot on Tongariro Street and Snow HQ on Roberts Street. A new Snow Shuttle departs from outside the Snow Depot at 8am every morning, with pick-ups in Turangi, returning at the end of the day.

This is a milestone year for the North Island ski industry, and the team at Destination Great Lake Taupō are working hard to put our region on the map and in the minds of winter holidaymakers.

An epic mountain biking adventure, or short walk – you choose. The Great Lake Trail combines three sections that take you on a journey through native bush and along the shores of the lake.

You can walk or bike any or all of the sections, depending on your level of comfort. Kawakawa and W2K are great short walks if you return the same way, starting and ending in Kinloch.

Our favourite lakeside walk or bike, this starts at the Taupō Yacht Club and winds along the lake to Five Mile Bay. A great trail for beginners and families. With the scenic lakefront, mountain views, many tiny beaches and bays, children’s playgrounds and barbeque facilities, there’s so much to enjoy.

A favourite with nature lovers, this picturesque lake is part of the Tongariro National Park. Lake Rotopounamu was formed by an extra large landslide around 10,000 years ago. The track circles the lake and features several resting, picnic and swimming spots.

up to 50km Located 10 minutes north of Taupō in the Wairakei Forest, this one has up to 50 kilometres of trails to suit all abilities, from children’s levels to cross country.

Using the linked tracks, riders can choose to ride for just a few hours, or take a full day to explore all the trails. Ride in and out of exotic pine and eucalyptus plantations, with some stunning views of Lake Taupō and the Waikato River.

Ideal for nature lovers and intermediate riders, this series of trails are a step up and take you through stunning scenery and bridge trails with a rural feel. So I want to try golf. A different kind of challenge and something on the bucket list for the not-so-adventurous, but that doesn’t mean it’s not difficult – a game of strategy and tactics, it takes brain power.

D

id you know New Zealand has the second highest number of golf courses per capita in the world? We’re already a golfing nation, and with Taupō’s natural landscapes and unique terrains, we even have the perfect spot for it. There are four golf courses in Taupō, all with a variety of features, that means there’s a type of course for every level. What makes us so unique is our weather and soil – the pumice soils drain themselves and don’t get bogged down in water, great for those who want to start learning.

If you’re thinking of listing your home or a space in your home on AirBnB, or other holiday rental sites, you’ll be among 306 others listed within the Taupō region. Success of these short-term rental websites has created interest at the IRD, and they want a cut of the action.

he IRD expects you to file a tax return if you have earnt income. Here’s some tips to make things easier and make sure you and your home are covered.

• Cleaning and laundry • Maintenance of your property – a portion of your upkeep expenses such as gardening could be claimed.

Talk to your insurer and your bank

It’s vital to keep good records and track your income and expenses. Get advice on the best use of technology to collate your records.

Advise your bank and your insurance company that you are renting out your home or a portion of it, so they can determine whether any changes need to be made to your account or insurance.

Claim expenses Anything you spend renting out a property may be claimed as an expense. For shared expenses, it needs to be a fair and reasonable portion. Examples include: • A portion of your home utilities such as electricity, gas, internet, Sky TV, heating and security • A portion of council rates, insurance and interest • Food and consumables (tea/coffee, toilet paper, etc.) that you offer your guests • A portion of travel to and from the property • Depreciation on chattels and appliances exclusively for guest use (e.g. hair dryers, heater, refrigerators) 24

ith more and more people now adopting the ‘new school’ way, thanks to smartphones and technology, the dating game is evolving fast and we may have forgotten how simple it used to be. Why do we look for old school magic in our relationships today?

But instead of comparing the old and the new, or dividing our readership between the good old fashioned ‘meet & greeters’

Space. You didn’t have to call each other so many times every day, taking over each other’s personal lives, living in each other’s pocket. The irregular meetings (and build up to them) were something special in themselves.

Picking up the phone. Yes, no texting, snapchatting or emoji wars.

Communication was much more clearer when you had an actual conversation.

Taking it steady. You didn’t need to announce your love to the world on the first date. It took a long time for people to get to know each other, but it was worth it. Give yourself some time to fall in love naturally.

New School Technology. Use it to your advantage. The best thing about technology and dating apps today is that you can get tailored recommendations based your interests, so maybe there’s a better chance you’ll find someone who fits.

What inspires your menu?

Our menus are seasonal and we always like to have a range of flavours.

We make sure everything is fresh, such as meat, fish and oysters. Your fish would be swimming in the afternoon and on your plate at dinnertime. Our oysters are shucked and even the smoking is done inhouse. We take care to put effort in all the details.

What’s your favourite dish to make?

The market fish – there’s so many ways to get creative with fish and I enjoy that.

It also keeps changing because we source fresh and sustainable fish, so there’s more ways to play with it.

What are the customer favourites?

Seafood, especially oysters. We’ve heard our seafood is some of the best in town.

Beef and lamb too, and we love to hear that because we feel proud to support local farmers by using Taupō beef and lamb.

What’s the most rewarding part of the job?

Transforming the raw ingredients into something exquisite, and getting great feedback for all our hard work.

I also enjoy training our younger chefs and passing on knowledge and techniques that help them do better.

What’s the most challenging?

risten Somerville doesn’t stock the traditional range of flowers most florists do, instead she prefers to go out and gather her own so customers can buy what’s fresh and seasonally available.

Bouquets are put together using what’s been foraged from gardens, the roadside and other wanderings, which give them a wild, fresh, vintage feel.

Initially starting out as a specialist wedding florist service, XOX Floral has gained momentum in the last year becoming the full service florist it is today with a studio newly opened. “It wouldn’t be the business it is today if I didn’t live in Taupō. There are some unique challenges that come with living here because there are no local flower markets or growers to rely on, and everything has to come on an overnight courier so I had to find a way to

make my business work by doing things differently.”

The challenges?

“You need perseverance and the ability to back yourself because it takes time to get established. But the reaction from my customers has been incredible and that’s what has made me believe I’ve got something worthwhile to offer.”

Your advice?

“Taupō is definitely a challenging market, but everyone’s very supportive and keen to see you make it work. Take the time to figure out your product, because what works elsewhere isnot always what works here, but your business will be the better for it.”

TV personality and host of TV Three’s The Café, Mike Puru spent a weekend in Taupō recently to MC the Service IQ Great Lake Taupō Business Awards.

The highlights of your visit?

W

ith just two days to spend, he made the most of the time he had in our town to experience the vibe, the adventure and our hospitality. Before he left, I grabbed the chance to catch up with him, getting his take on our beloved town.

What were the first things that stood out when you arrived?

As soon as I landed I couldn’t get over how beautiful the scenery is, the airport has free parking (you don’t get that in Auckland), and coming into town I could see it’s grown bigger and busier than I can remember.

Winding down after the jump at Wairakei Terraces, then having the best buffet in town at the Wairakei Resort.

Visiting the town centre while it was buzzing with the marathon participants and supporters.

Craters of the Moon – the best $8 I’ve spent in a long time. It was scenic, peaceful and fascinating walking the steaming ground and reflecting on the volcanic plateau.

What’s your first impression of Taupō businesses and locals?

I love that there’s a smorgasbord of businesses here – businesses that have been here a long time and become

generational, with previous employees who grew to own their own businesses.

They are so well supported locally and really helping the economy.

And the locals, people here are so friendly and helpful everywhere I go.

Your favourite activity while you were here?

Has to be Skydiving. Everything about it was so memorable – getting picked up in the Hummer Limo, the views and the whole experience. There’s no better place, no better day, and no better company to do it with than here.

Even a walk along the lakefront – the views and atmosphere are so relaxing, and it’s away from the bustling town but still so close.

I’ve only been here a couple of days, and I’ve fallen in love with the place – it’s a perfect town all-round. Great for families, action-seekers, the quiet ones – anyone can fit in. Plus, being supported by a large infrastructure of businesses makes it even more versatile. Taupō is big enough to have everything a city offers, and small enough for everyone to enjoy it.

Make the most of zucchini (courgette) season before it’s over and enjoy the combination of these classic Italian flavours.

Basil, tomatoes, prosciutto, ricotta and parmesan cheese make for a rich and flavoursome pasta dish.

Zucchini

TAGLIATELLE Method Cook the pasta in boiling salted water for 3 to 5 minutes or until al dente.

Drain and return pasta to saucepan.

Cover and keep warm.

Slice zucchini into ribbons using a vegetable peeler. Place zucchini, tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, anchovies, chili flakes and prosciutto in a large bowl.

Season with salt and pepper.

Toss to combine.

Ingredients             

3 75g fresh tagliatelle 4 zucchini (600g) 2 50g punnet small cherry tomatoes, halved 2 tbsp olive oil 3 cloves garlic, crushed 4 anchovies, finely chopped 1 /2 teaspoon chili flakes 1 00g thinly sliced prosciutto, torn into small pieces 2 tbsp lemon juice 3 /4 cup (50g) finely grated fresh parmesan cheese 1 50g fresh ricotta, broken into pieces 1 cup fresh basil leaves Extra basil leaves, to garnish

Heat a large oiled frying pan over a high heat. Cook zucchini mixture in two batches for 3 to 4 minutes, tossing frequently, or until just tender.

Add to the pasta with the lemon juice, 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, ricotta and basil. Season to taste. Toss until well combined.

Serve immediately, with remaining parmesan and extra basil leaves, to garnish.

Recipe Hacks

For a vegetarian version leave out the anchovies and replace the prosciutto with 1/2 cup toasted pine nuts or chopped walnuts. If you’re not keen on anchovies, replace with shredded chicken.
