Commonwealth. The survey results will help to inform Extension programming to better serve stakeholders in response to ongoing challenges. This survey should take no more than 20 minutes to complete. The researchers will invite all participants to take part in this study again in the future in an effort to capture the evolving effects of COVID-19. Participating in the follow-up survey will help the researchers better understand the impact COVID-19 has on agricultural operations. No personal information (name, address, e-mail, telephone number, IP address, etc.) will be collected. All data from this survey will remain confidential and anonymous. The survey is available at: https://bit.ly/3qLd10V The survey is open to operators and managers of farms and agribusinesses with

a primary location in Virginia. Respondents must be 18 years of age or older. There are no benefits or rewards for participating in this study. Results from this study may be used to communicate the effects of COVID-19 on Virginia farms and agribusinesses to state and federal agencies in an effort to secure relief. Results from this study also may be published in the future. Participation in this research survey is voluntary. The first 500 valid survey participants will be given the opportunity to enter a drawing for a $10 electronic gift card for Amazon. Participants must provide a valid email address at the end of the survey to enter the drawing. Again, multiple entries from the same address will be disqualified. For patients in the emergency room, fighting cancer or coping with a life-threatening illness, help can’t wait. Their health is reliant on the selfless generosity of blood donors. However, the blood supply continues to face challenges from the ongoing pandemic and extreme winter weather that impacted much of the U.S. last month. More donors, especially those with type O blood, are needed now to ensure that patients have lifesaving blood

products available for emergencies and everyday medical treatments. Schedule a blood donation appointment by downloading the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. March is Red Cross Month, and the Red Cross is celebrating blood, platelet and plasma donors for stepping up to meet the constant need for blood amid the pandemic.

The Red Cross is testing blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The test may indicate

if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to this coronavirus, regardless of whether an individual developed COVID-19 symptoms. Testing may also identify the presence of antibodies developed after receiving a COVID19 vaccine. Red Cross antibody tests will be helpful to identify individuals who have COVID-19 antibodies and may now help current coronavirus patients in need of convalescent plasma transfusions. Convalescent plasma is a type of blood donation collected from COVID-19 survivors that have antibodies that may help patients who are actively fighting the virus. Plasma from whole blood donations that test positive for high levels of COVID-19 antibodies may

be used to help COVID-19 patients. COVID-19 antibody test results will be available within one to two weeks in the Red Cross Blood Donor App or donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org. A positive antibody test result does not confirm infection or immunity. The Red Cross is not testing donors to diagnose illness, referred to as a diagnostic test. To protect the health and safety of Red Cross staff and donors, it is important that individuals who do not feel well or believe they may be ill with COVID19 postpone donation. Each Red Cross blood drive and donation center follows the highest standards of safety and infection control, and

From the managing editor

Why would anyone damage a cemetery? By Melody Kinser Managing Editor hen I heard the news that some tombstones and markers at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond bad been vandalized, it was like I had been kicked in the gut. Not only do I respect and value the sanctity of a final resting place, but, in this case, I have family buried there. My sister and my brother-in-law’s brother were buried there in 2011 and 2015, respectively. Michael will be placed next to my sister. I don’t know about the fourth grave. We knew my sister’s life was coming to an end in April of 2011 (it will be 10 years on the 27th), but -- despite a long-term illness -- Robin

W

and Michael really hadn’t discussed final arrangements. It was a Sunday night when he called, saying, “I’m coming over” after having spoken to one of the specialists involved in her case. I told Mom, “We’ll agree with whatever he decides.” Her days were numbered, so we had to talk about preparations for her death. I asked about Hollywood Cemetery, knowing it was one of her favorite historical spots in the city. The cemetery was always a destination whenever I brought family or friends to visit before I moved here. We agreed Michael would check into the availability of any plots. He was successful. Of course, we go often to visit and clean the

tombstone, bench and marker for Robin and Bryn. Not to sound macabre, but it is a lovely, peaceful setting. And the history is incredible. Also noteworthy are the mausoleums and statues located throughout the massive cemetery. So, how could anyone topple over tombstones and markers and break some into pieces? How heartless and cruel! I pray the culprits are caught and face the toughest consequences possible. While I’m relieved my family members’ graves were undisturbed, I understand the grief of those whose loved ones were impacted. Whatever caused such a disruptive action is not excusable. I hope to hear about arrests soon.

Don’t give up -- your vaccination call will come By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Like thousands of other Virginians, I was beginning to believe the call informing me I’d been approved for a COVID-19 vaccination would never come. And it didn’t. The good news arrived in the form of an email from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), notifying me that my number had finally come

up and it was time to schedule an appointment. After several attempts to schedule were met with crashing websites or blank pages, I finally scheduled my slot for the sought-after vaccines. I’d listened carefully to news reports that described a level of frustration with the registration system that raised sufficient alarm, so I felt I was well prepared for the process. For days, I heard that recipients would not be able to choose which

vaccine they preferred, and citizens should not be choosy and take the first shot that was available. So, I was a bit surprised when the first question on the CDC registration form was “Which vaccine do you want?” There were three selections. In other words, all of the vaccines were available and choices were available — a pleasant surprise. I chose Johnson and Johnson for several reasons, but mostly I only wanted to go through the process

America is navigating in perilous water Prior to the last 12 months, which proved to be exceptionally traumatic for America, progressives had been exploiting anything in this nation of 330+ million that could be used to restructure America into their version of a perfect society. Modern America is barely recognizable compared to its former self. With more reforms on the way, progressives have already achieved quite a bit of success: 1. God … the foundation upon which America was built and the core of its generosity and contempt for evil is no longer recognized in public institutions, despite God’s prominent role in evicting slavery and the nation’s belated emphasis on human rights; 2. National border … disregarding longstanding immigration laws, the border once protected by presidents and the blood of countless Americans is being overrun by illegal refugees, some of whom are likely drug smugglers, slave traffickers, terrorists and/ or worse; 3. Public safety … claims of “systemic racism” in law enforcement, which contradicts credible researched data, incited lawlessness, sanctification of felons and condemnation of those donning uniforms. Meanwhile, the individual’s right to bear arms is under intensified siege, which, if lost, will leave law-abiding citizens at the mercy of armed aggressors; 4. Right to life … while the Black Lives Matter movement is glorified and acclaimed, the lives of countless babies of all races and colors in the womb can be snuffed at the whim of their mothers; 5. Fiscal control … setting themselves above constraints that govern see LETTERS, pg. 8

Social reform … in the name of social justice, while defaulting taxpayers and those in arrears face the IRS, Federal subsidy programs, once properly directed at helping disadvantaged citizens and those in temporary distress, reward able-bodied people for not working, conditioning them to laziness and groveling instead of testing their capabilities, the backbone of America’s rise to affluence. email and noticed an alert from CDC informing me that I had not completed my registration and an important questionnaire form was missing from my application. After several attempts, I accessed the CDC site and filled out the short questionnaire, submitted it, and ran out the door heading for the Raceway, and, finally, a real defense against a virus that had caused disruption for all who

encountered it during the past year seemed within reach. A cool wind interrupted the first signs the of pre-spring day as I lined up outside the iconic red barn at the old fairgrounds, joining hundreds of other seniors who were lucky enough to get the call. “Everyone take one of these forms and fill it out before you enter,” the man in fatigues shouted as he distributed a single page of questions.

I mentioned that I already had filled out the same form online and submitted it, but the cordial soldier told me that was for federal registration and I was at a state-run vaccination center. Now, I could have retorted and explained I didn’t register at the state site, but got my appointment on the federal site, but this guy was working hard enough without my input. It took only seconds to

check no on all the boxes and gain entry into a long line that wound through the old barn, back and forth like waiting for a ride at Kings Dominion. After an insignificant wait, I was directed to a station where an off-duty Henrico fireman prepared to give me the shot. “Did you answer no to all the questions on the form?” he asked. “Yes, twice,” I responded. Seconds later, the deed

was done and I became one of many seniors who have been vaccinated. With it came a sense of security that I can only hope will envelop a nation as more and more of us take the plunge. I also left with a renewed respect for the many public servants and other volunteers who made the clinic run smoothly and provided more than just medicine to the residents they encountered.

ing to be unifying America, progressives instead profile and judge everyone according to economic condition, race, sex, creed, and so forth, a divisive, anti-Christian concept that fosters resentment via blatant, false stereotyping: (a) Caucasians are privileged and bigoted; (b) people of color are oppressed, disadvantaged and needy. 8. Truth … reality is no longer necessarily a by-product of fact and reason, but can be shaped by misinformed and/ or misguided perceivers with access to platforms – politicians, newscasters and entertainers; 9. Patriotism … appreciation for America is no longer fashionable, evidenced by removing the Pledge of Allegiance from schools, while disrespecting America is tolerated, even encouraged; 10. Election reform … while proponents of the “For the People Act of 2021” hype the bill as an expansion of voting rights and a cleanup of corruption, critics assert it will lead to a federal takeover of the

election process and give every member of Congress up to $5 million of campaign funding. Throughout the course of history, the adage nothing lasts forever has proven accurate with many forms of government. America was birthed nearly 2½ centuries ago and became united about a century later with the end of the War Between the States. The good ship America now finds itself in deep, dangerous water. Will it move out of the storm, better for the experience, or will it bring to fruition Abraham Lincoln’s warning, “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves?” Daniel Corso Mechanicsville

munity and surrounding area. There are many food pantries right here in Hanover County. The Beaverdam Food Pantry is ably staffed by Sandy Wilcox and her inner core of volunteers, Mickey Craig, Tom Harrison, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Hunt and Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Wilson. Without the dedication of these individuals named above, many people would continue to go hungry and/or in need of food and sundries each week in order to survive during these trying times. They have provided food and sundries for up to as many as 200 families on a Sunday, who are very much in need during these times. Another food pantry in Hanover is the Western Hanover Emergency Action Team (W.H.E.A.T.). They service Beaverdam, Doswell, Montpelier and Rockville area residents. This past year they have served an average of 62 families each week. These outreach efforts have touched over 500 souls and is led by Rickie Hall Smith and

her dedicated roster of volunteers. There also is Moments of Hope Food Pantry, which is located near the Hanover Courthouse on Route 301 and was founded by Bob Hummer, who is the founder and executive officer. The everyday operation of the pantry is handled by Betty Jo Hayes and her capable staff of volunteers led by Maureen and Sydney. There are many others not listed that help Moments of Hope reach out to their community and beyond, just as W.H.E. A.T. and Beaverdam Food Pantry do. In closing, I would encourage all to donate what they can to one or all of these organizations as they “stand in the gap” for so many families during these difficult times. The Scripture from Matthew 25:40 -- “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Be blessed and stay safe. John Cobb Montpelier

Kudos to health district and county I want to give a shout-out to the Chickahominy Health District and Hanover County

Food pantries meeting need in the county This past year has put a lot of added stress on so many people and their families, with the loss of various jobs and employers having to cut back on some employees’ hours due to the pandemic. With these lost jobs, and some hours for others, come the decisions that have to be made whether to pay the household bills, the medical bills or provide food for the family. This is where the many food pantries in the Hanover County area and beyond have kicked in to meet this unprecedented need within our com-

within the FY22 [Fiscal Year 2022] to address these challenges and support our greatest asset — our workforce,” Lawson told the Hanover County Board of Supervisors as she presented the Human Resources budget review for the upcoming budget at a meeting earlier this month. Nearly 50 percent of the operating budget is allotted for benefits and salaries, and the FY22 proposal includes requests for 14.6 new full-time positions, most of them in the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office and Hanover County Fire/EMS. Remaining competitive in attracting and retaining employees is a critical mission for Lawson’s department. She said this year’s problem has been exacerbated by record increases in Chesterfield and Henrico counties and the City of Richmond, with some of them offering packages that included substantial increases and more. “It is important to note that historically we have been on par with Chesterfield and Henrico counties,” Lawson said. “However, this current fiscal year has shown we are already behind both of them.” “While we are happy to provide this 2.5% merit increase, we are not keeping pace with our peers,” she added. Lawson said Henrico teachers are receiving at least a 6.9% increase in compensation and Chesterfield is investing more than $13 million for all public safety staff and up to 70% of the workforce will receive additional compensation. They also are investing $46 million over three years for schools with $25 million in FY22 for teachers and support staff. Henrico is investing more than $58 million in FY22 for teachers and schools, repre-

senting an 18% increase with starting pay going up $6,000. “Remaining competitive with our peers from a compensation perspective is critical to attract and maintain talent. We have known for several months that our competitors have dedicated significant investments in their public safety and educational staff,” Lawson said. Salary increases in the public safety and education areas in those counties could increase as much as $20,000, according to Lawson. “We are already seeing a detrimental impact on our workforce as our employees are keenly aware of these pay adjustments,” Lawson said. “As we expected, the impacts are already having a domino effect. This domino effect will only add to the challenges we are facing with our recruitment.” That combination of factors is hampering the county’s ability to retain good employees due to retirements and resignations and applications for new positions also have decreased. It is imperative that we provide funds to compete with our peers,” Lawson said “Otherwise, we are going to lose high-performing employees.” In an effort to combat those competitive challenges, Lawson proposed several steps to begin a process that enhances the county’s ability to attract and retain quality employees. Lawson said the 2.5% merit increases proposed in the FY22 budget are not on par with our peers but do include a $1.8 million increase for sworn public safety employees, coupled with longevity increases and starting salary changes. The FY22 proposal also allots $1.8 million to address teacher, support staff and bus driver increases. The plan included $3,500 increases in starting salary for sworn public service employees. Even with the challenges,

Hanover County employees will receive additional compensation contained within this year’s budget, including the 2.5% merit increase for all employees. “In addition to the merit increases funding for a performance incentive for our top performers, market adjustments for specific positions and funding for meeting increasing health care costs complete the proposed 2022 budget from a workforce perspective,” Lawson said. “Please keep in mind that these increases represent only a fraction of increases our peers are providing their employees,” Lawson noted. “Without these investments, we would expect to see significant increases in turnover.” Lawson said her department will continue to conduct benchmark surveys, an annual review of all positions focused on starting salaries in comparison with others in the Metro Richmond area. The most recent results revealed that 75 positions fell under that mark this year and required adjustment, and Lawson said neighboring localities have scheduled an extensive review of all non-public safety positions that will result in more adjustments in 2023. “This could have a significant impact on our workforce, especially next year,” Lawson said. In addition to the 2.5 percent merit pay, the top 15 percent of county employees will receive performance awards “to promote and award exceptional performance.” The county’s proposed 2022 budget continues to fund healthcare coverage increases for its employees, a benefit to more than 80 percent of county employees. Premium increases were actually lower this year due to a reduction in claims. Lawson lauded the hard work of county employees

during the pandemic and indicated, despite the challenges, Hanover remains a destination point for perspective employees. “Hanover County has always had a reputation of being an employer of choice as evidenced by our high performing workforce and survey results,” Lawson said. “We are fortunate to have a loyal workforce who consistently demonstrate consistent customer service to our citizens and those who conduct business here.” Lawson said the county receives applications from all

areas seeking employment in Hanover County due to that excellent reputation. She noted the quality of the county’s employees allowed the workforce to transition quickly to COVID challenges and maintain county services during a difficult period. “Their resiliency and dedication are some of the many qualities that make Hanover county a great place to work,” Lawson said. “I want to remind everyone how this past year has presented numerous challenges from the COVID pandemic to

competing peer market adjustments on a very large scale. However, our employees have consistently remained dedicated and committed to their jobs as public servants,” she said. Investing in those employees renews the county’s promise to service excellence. “This budget demonstrates our appreciation through investments in our workforce,” she said. “We believe by investing in our workforce we will promote our commitment to service…. and demonstrate our greatest asset is truly our workforce.”

VERNA MAE BOYD

BOYD, Verna Mae Talley, peacefully left this earthly life for her Heavenly home March

15, 2021 at 11:18 p.m. She bravely battled angiosarcoma. She was born September 9, 1935 to Spencer Lee Talley and Myrtle Silver Kirby Talley, in Mechanicsville on her family’s farm on Talley Farm Road. She was one of nine children. In an era where her family faced many hardships while she grew up on the farm, she persevered through hard work. It made her stronger and wiser. She graduated from Battlefield Park High School when the school only offered 11 grades. She was a charter member of the Liberty Christian Church (Compass Christian) when it formed in 1961. The church was her passion. She was involved in the Ladies’ Circle a great deal for most of her adult life. She had a servant’s heart. Although she couldn’t attend because of health in her later years, she still sent her checks every month to support God’s work. She was dedicated and retired from C&P Telephone Co. after 30 years. She refused to institutionalize her daughter, Robin, born with Down Syndrome, but instead nurtured her until Robin passed away in 1996 at the age of 33. Verna Mae loved to bake. Her sausage balls were an appetizer to treasure. Many joke about fruitcakes. That’s ONLY because they never had Verna Mae’s fruitcakes. Favorite memories include sharing her cooking skills with her grandchildren, allowing them to lick the bowls, but not allowing them to jump when the cakes were in the oven! As a younger woman, she was always polished and well-dressed. She prayed for her family and God’s work. Verna Mae was a quiet woman, not freely expressing her opinions, though she had many. Her family loved her soft laugh and hearing her say to them, “I love you,” addressing each person specifically by name before they went home. Eugene “Gene” Guilford Boyd III and “Vernie” were married

Owens (Russell L “Rusty” III, deceased). To her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, she was “Mema.” Her grandchildren are Karen A. Drake (Timothy), Kelly A. Smither (Christopher), Spencer W. Alexander, Britney N. Owens, Brandon R. Owens. Her great-grandchildren are Clark Eugene Drake, Amos Lee Drake, Larkin Boyd Smither, Lloyd Alexander Smither and Lawson Talley Smither. Gayle was at the home each night after work and on weekends to care for her mom. Sharon Talley Martin, niece, was Verna Mae’s caregiver. Sharon served through rain, snow, heat or any possible hindrance and was always there twice each day. The family will receive friends at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 19, 2021. A celebration of her life in the Lord was held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, at the Compass Christian Church, Mechanicsville. Interment was held 1 p.m. Monday, March 22, in Signal Hill Memorial Park, Hwy. 301, Hanover, Va. Ethisphere honors HCA Healthcare as a 2021 World’s Most Ethical Company NASHVILLE, Tennessee – HCA Healthcare (NYSE:HCA), one of the nation’s leading healthcare providers, recently announced that it has been recognized for the 11th time by Ethisphere, a global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices, as one of the 2021 World’s Most Ethical Companies. HCA Healthcare is one of only seven honorees in the Healthcare Providers category. “We are honored to again be recognized as a World’s Most Ethical Company and owe it all to our incredible colleagues, especially those working on the front lines,” said Sam Hazen, chief executive officer of HCA Healthcare. “This acknowledgement underscores that, even when faced with a threat to public health and safety like that of a pandemic, we are committed to doing what’s right for our people, our patients, our communities and other stakeholders.” The COVID-19 pandemic was at the forefront of 2020 and HCA Healthcare responded by protecting its colleagues and patients, and by partnering with others to improve care beyond the organization. HCA Healthcare has not laid-off a single employee due to the pandemic, and, in April, it instituted a pandemic pay program, which allowed the organization to continue to pay more than 127,000 colleagues, even when their hours were affected by the significant decrease in patients visiting hospitals across the country. Additionally, HCA Healthcare hospitals do not bill patients who are diagnosed with COVID-19, whether they have insurance or not, for testing or hospital care related to the treatment of COVID-19. As a learning health system, HCA Healthcare analyzes data from its approximately 35 million patient encounters each year to develop best practices that improve patient care. To help combat COVID-19, the health system teamed up with Google and SADA on a data portal to help communities prepare and respond to COVID19, offered more than $1 million to local community partners to aid in coronavirus

relief efforts and participated in the White House collaborative to provide up to 1,000 ventilators to other health systems. “The world has faced tremendous obstacles this past year, but we are proud to be recognized for the positive impact we are having in the communities that we serve,” said Kathi Whalen, senior vice president and chief ethics and compliance officer at HCA Healthcare. “During these challenging times, our colleagues have shown an unwavering commitment to doing what is right.”

In 2020, HCA Healthcare donated more than $45 million to community organizations and provided charity care, uninsured discounts and other uncompensated care at a cost of $3.4 billion. Last year, HCA Healthcare colleagues spent more than 83,000 hours volunteering in the communities they serve. As part of its sustainability plan, HCA Healthcare seeks to protect and preserve the environment inside and outside of its facilities by encouraging the reduction of energy usage throughout its facilities and considering the environment in all new construction and renovation projects. In 2020, HCA Healthcare hospitals across the country were honored with 60 national Practice Greenhealth awards for their steadfast sustainability efforts. Recognition by Ethisphere is in part affirmation of HCA Healthcare’s commitment to fostering a culture of diversity and belief that excellence in healthcare starts with a foundation of inclusion, compassion and respect. HCA Healthcare continues to deliver on this promise exemplified in recent diversity and inclusion efforts, including its award-winning BRAVE Conversations program, which provides colleagues an opportunity to discuss complex topics in a safe and respectful setting. HCA Healthcare also announced a $10 million investment over the next three years in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HCBUs) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs).

Additionally, in response to a heightened focus on racial injustice, HCA Healthcare instituted a provisional social justice match, which supported gifts from colleagues to organizations and nonprofits supporting racial justice and addressing health equity for communities of color. In total, HCA Healthcare and its colleagues helped make an impact of $227,364 across 21 total organizations from June 5 to July 31, 2020. “While addressing the tough challenges of 2020, HCA Healthcare led through resilience and a commitment to ethics and integrity,” said Ethisphere CEO Timothy Erblich. “The World’s Most Ethical Companies honorees continue to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the highest values and positively impacting the communities they serve. Congratulations to everyone at HCA Healthcare for earning the World’s Most Ethical Companies designation.” In 2021, Ethisphere recognized 135 honorees spanning 22 countries and 47 industries. The full list of the 2021 World’s Most Ethical Companies can be found at https://worldsmostethicalcompanies.com/ honorees.

About HCA Healthcare Nashville-based HCA Healthcare is one of the nation’s leading providers of healthcare services comprising more than 2,000 sites of care, including 185 hospitals, surgery centers, freestanding ERs, urgent care centers, and physician clinics, in 20 states and the United Kingdom. With its founding in 1968, HCA Healthcare created a new model for hospital care in the United States, using combined resources to strengthen hospitals, deliver patientfocused care and improve the practice of medicine. HCA Healthcare has conducted a number of clinical studies, including one that demonstrated that full-term delivery is healthier than early elective delivery of babies and another that identified a clinical protocol that can reduce bloodstream infections in ICU patients by 44 percent. HCA Healthcare is a learning health system that uses its more than 35 million annual patient encounters to advance science, improve patient care and save lives.

Council offers tax amnesty CoQ10’s Failure Leaves to aid residents, businesses Millions Wanting PAID ADVERTISEMENT

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor ASHLAND -- In their ongoing efforts to help residents and businesses trying to recoup economically due to the COVID-19 pandemic, members of Ashland Town Council unanimously approved an amnesty period for penalty and interest applied to delinquent real estate, personal property, business license, meals, and lodging taxes. Action was taken during last Tuesday’s regular council meeting on the one-time benefit to delinquent taxpayers, which waives penalty and interest on payments made between Tuesday, March 16, and Saturday, May 1. Payment plans made after May 1 will not receive a waiver of penalty and interest. After May 1, any outstanding penalty and interest will be reapplied and collected GOLDSBOROUGH vigorously. With the amnesty period deadline fast approaching, those needing more information ae encouraged to contact the Ashland Finance Department as soon as possible at 804-798-8650 or finance@ashlandva.gov. Finance Director Charles Goldsborough brought the ordinance proposals before council. Public hearings were conducted on each, with Mayor Steve Trivett opening each for comment. Ordinance No. 2021-04 amends the town code by reducing the penalty and interest for late remittances of food and beverage taxes and transient occupancy taxes to zero from Jan. 7, 2016, until May 1, 2021. It also reads that “Any person who fails or refuses to remit to the Director of Finance transient occupancy taxes first required to be remitted on or between January 15, 2016, and May 1, 24 2021, will be assessed a penalty of zero percent for failing or refusing to remit the taxes, so long as the remittances are made on or before May 1, 2021. All other requirements regarding transient occupancy taxes shall remain in force, including but not limited to the requirements for recordkeeping and for timely filing of reports of such taxes collected. After May 1, 2021, any person who has failed or refused to remit such taxes will be assessed a penalty in the amount of ten

percent (10%) of the tax past due. Any such penalty, when assessed, will become part of the tax.” According to Goldsborough, there will be assessed interest at a rate of zero percent per year between Jan. 15, 2016, and May 1, 2021, and 10 percent per year thereafter, on past due transient occupancy taxes that were first due on or between Jan. 15, 2016, and May 1, 2021. Failure or refusal “to remit to the director of Finance food and beverage taxes first required to be remitted on or between Jan. 15, 2016, and May 1, 40 2021, will be assessed a penalty of zero percent for failing or refusing to remit the taxes, so long as the remittances are made on or before May 1, 2021. All other requirements regarding food and beverage taxes shall remain in force, including but not limited to the requirements for recordkeeping and for timely filing of reports of such taxes collected. After May 1, 2021, any person who has failed or refused to remit such taxes will be assessed a penalty in the amount of ten percent (10%) of the tax past due. Any such penalty, when assessed, will become part of the tax.” The ordinance, which notes an assessed interest at a rate of zero percent per year 48 between Jan. 15, 2016, and May 1, 2021, and 10% per year thereafter, on past due food and beverage taxes that were first due on or between Jan. 15, 2016, and May 1, 2021. It took effect upon adoption, and the reduction in penalties and interest contained in the ordinance are retroactive to Jan. 15, 2016. “Nothing in this ordinance shall be construed to require a refund for penalty and interest that have been paid on or before March 15, 2021,” Goldsborough added. The other ordinance works within the time frame of Jan. 15, 2016, to May 1, 2021, and read like Ordinance No. 2021-04 in that remittances and assessments that were first required to be remitted on or before Jan. 15, 2016, and May 1, 2021, will be assessed a penalty of zero percent for failing or refusing to remit the taxes, so long as the remittances are made to the director of Finance on or before May 1, 2021. They also went into effect upon adoption. Ordinance No. 2021-05 is an uncodified ordinance that amends the town code by reducing the penalty and interest for late remittances of Business, Professional and Occupational License (BPOL) taxes to zero from Jan. 15, 2016, to May 1, 2021.

Use this pill to supercharge your brain and think better than ever. BREAKING NEWS: Millions of Americans take the supplement CoQ10. It’s the “jet fuel” that supercharges your cells’ power generators, known as mitochondria. As you age, your mitochondria begin to die. In fact, by age 67, you lose 80% of the mitochondria you had at age 25.1 But if you’re taking CoQ10, there’s something important you should know. As powerful as CoQ10 is, there is a critical thing it fails to do. It can’t create new mitochondria in your cells. Taking CoQ10 is not enough “There’s a little-known NASA nutrient that multiplies the number of new power generators in your cells by up to 55%,” says Dr. Al Sears, owner of the Sears Institute for Anti-Aging Medicine in Royal Palm Beach, Florida. “Science once thought this was impossible. But now you can make your heart, brain and body young again.” “I tell my patients the most important thing I can do is increase their ‘health span.’ This is the length of time you can live free of disease and with all your youthful abilities and faculties intact.” Medical first: Multiply the “power generators” in your cells Al Sears, M.D., recently released an energy-boosting supplement based on this NASA nutrient that has become so popular, he’s having trouble keeping it in stock. Dr. Sears is the author of over 500 scientific papers on antiaging and recently spoke at the WPBF 25 Health & Wellness Festival featuring Dr. Oz and special guest Suzanne Somers. Thousands of people listened to Dr. Sears speak on his anti-aging breakthroughs and attended his book signing at the event. Now, Dr. Sears has come up with what his peers consider his greatest contribution to anti-aging medicine yet — a newly discovered nutrient that multiplies the number of tiny, energy-producing “engines” located inside the body’s cells, shattering the limitations of traditional CoQ10 supplements. Why mitochondria matter A single cell in your body can contain between 200 to 2,000 mitochondria, with the largest number found in the most metabolically active cells, like those in your brain, heart and skeletal muscles. But because of changes in cells, stress and poor diet, most people’s power generators begin

If your bottle of CoQ10 does not have this NASA nutrient in it, then you are NOT getting the full benefits of CoQ10 to malfunction and die off as they age. In fact, the Mitochondria Research Society reports 50 million U.S. adults are suffering from health problems because of mitochondrial dysfunction. Common ailments often associated with aging — such as memory problems, heart issues, blood sugar concerns and vision and hearing difficulties — can all be connected to a decrease in mitochondria. Birth of new mitochondria Dr. Sears and his researchers combined the most powerful form of CoQ10 available — called ubiquinol — with a unique, newly discovered natural compound called PQQ that has the remarkable ability to grow new mitochondria. Together, the two powerhouses are now available in a supplement called Ultra Accel II. Discovered by a NASA probe in space dust, PQQ (Pyrroloquinoline quinone) stimulates something called “mitochondrial biogenesis” — a unique process that actually boosts the number of healthy mitochondria in your cells. In a study published in the Journal of Nutrition, mice fed PQQ grew a staggering number of new mitochondria, showing an increase of more than 55% in just eight weeks. The mice with the strongest mitochondria showed no signs of aging — even when they were the equivalent of 80 years old. Science stands behind the power of PQQ Biochemical Pharmacology reports that PQQ is up to 5,000 times more efficient in sustaining energy production than common antioxidants. “Imagine 5,000 times more efficient energy,” says Dr. Sears. “PQQ has been a game changer for my patients.” “With the PQQ in Ultra Accel, I have energy I never thought possible,” says Colleen R., one of Dr. Sears’ patients. “I am in my 70s but feel 40 again. I think

clearer, move with real energy and sleep like a baby.” It works right away Along with an abundance of newfound energy, users also report a sharper, more focused mind and memory, and even younger-looking skin and hair. Jerry M. from Wellington, Florida, used Ultra Accel and was amazed at the effect. “I noticed a difference within a few days,” says Jerry. “My endurance almost doubled. But it’s not just in your body. You can feel it mentally, too,” says Jerry. “Not only do I feel a difference, but the way it protects my cells is great insurance against a health disaster as I get older.” Increase your health span today The demand for this supplement is so high, Dr. Sears is having trouble keeping it in stock. “My patients tell me they feel better than they have in years. This is ideal for people who are feeling or looking older than their age… or for those who are tired or growing more forgetful.” “My favorite part of practicing anti-aging medicine is watching my patients get the joy back in their lives. Ultra Accel sends a wake-up call to every cell in their bodies… and they actually feel young again.” Where to nd Ultra Accel II Right now, the only way to get this potent combination of PQQ and super-powered CoQ10 is with Dr. Sears’ breakthrough Ultra Accel II formula. To secure bottles of this hot, new supplement, buyers should contact the Sears Health Hotline at 1-800-778-1879 within the next 48 hours. “It takes time to get bottles shipped out to drug stores,” said Dr. Sears. “The Hotline allows us to ship the product directly to the customer.” Dr. Sears feels so strongly about this product, he offers a 100%, money-back guarantee on every order. “Just send me back the bottle and any unused product within 90 days, and I’ll send you your money back,” said Dr. Sears. The Hotline will be taking orders for the next 48 hours. After that, the phone number will be shut down to allow them to restock. Call 1-800-778-1879 to secure your limited supply of Ultra Accel II. young adults to those especially being ripped off,” said Barry N. Moore, president & CEO of BBB serving Central Virginia. “Scammers never take a day off, and neither can consumers in protecting themselves.” According to Melissa Lanning Trumpower, executive director of the BBB Institute for Marketplace Trust, which is BBB’s educational foundation, it was unsurprising that scams perpetrated online through websites and social media apps were the riskiest contact methods for all age groups in 2020. The risk of financial loss also rose significantly in 2020. Nearly one of every two reports to BBB Scam Tracker (46.7%) noted a financial loss, with two-thirds of reports (64.7%) resulting in financial loss being

online purchase scams, which was the top riskiest scam in 2020. Online purchase scams were the most common scam reported to BBB, comprising 38.3% of all scam reports. Pet and PPE-related online purchase scams spiked during the pandemic. A way scammers take advantage of younger adults in particular is by utilizing a payment method less familiar to younger generations: checks. Fake check scams were the second most risky scam for adults ages 18 to 24 in a year where payment via online payment systems rose across all age groups. Ashland helps Helen Gilliam celebrate 104th birthday (Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Sue Watson, one of the Town of Ashland’s most avid “cheerleaders”. She joined last week in celebrating Helen Gilliam’s 104th birthday.) ASHLAND -- On March 17, Helen Gilliam’s 104th birthday was celebrated by her loving family. They were joined by Gandy Elementary School children, Hanover County Public Schools Superintendent Mike Gill, Ashland representative on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors Faye Prichard, Ashland Mayor Steve Trivett, Vice Mayor John Hodges, members of the Ashland Police Department, and a few friends and neighbors. The crowd gathered in a socially- distanced fashion outside of the Gilliam home to enjoy the brief celebration. Several weeks ago, Alma Nelson, Mrs. Gilliam’s daughter, told her friend and neighbor, Emily Lee, that the family would like to celebrate

this big birthday in a way that was appropriate and safe for their mother and grandmother. Emily talked with Lorie Foley and me about how to make this happen. Gill said they would like to be a part of this birthday for their neighbor. Personnel with HCPS were leaders in making this big birthday one that will be remembered and valued by everyone who was there. Before the big day, many birthday cards arrived at the Berkley Street house that is directly across from the entrance to HCPS’ Central Office. Balloons and posters set the stage for the noon gathering. The Ashland police blocked off the street for the ceremony. Gandy principal Leigh Finch and Gandy music teacher Megan Standlick and five Gandy student house leaders -- Ansley, Ellie, Gabe, Nathaly, and Noadiah -- made the short walk across their campus to lead the singing of “Happy

Birthday,” while holding Happy Birthday cards made by Gandy art students. Mayor Trivett brought birthday greetings from all of Ashland. Then Gill brought neighborly birthday greetings from all of Hanover’s schools and people. After presenting Mrs. Gilliam with a bouquet of flowers and a birthday cake, the Gandy students sang “Happy Birthday.” Then the whole crowd joined those singers with another energetic version of “Happy Birthday.” Even though the ceremony was short, it was obviously filled with spirit and love. People in the neighborhood who joined the gathering, family members, and community leaders were obviously glad and excited to be a part of such a positive community event — one that reflected the contagious energy and joy of the honoree and her family. Mrs. Gilliam and her family’s big day continued after the community

gathering dispersed. Governor Ralph Northam called to wish her a “Happy Birthday” later in the day. Alma Nelson, Mrs. Gilliam’s daughter who lives with her, said that her mother had a lively and pleasant conversation with the Governor. And to top off the ceremony, the people at the Ashland Chick-fil-A brought over birthday cards and 104 chicken nuggets for a birthday afternoon treat. In a conversation the day after the birthday, Emily Lee said that everyone who participated in this party felt blessed just as she feels blessed to have known Mrs. Gilliam for so many years. As Mrs. Gilliam has been blessed with her 104 years of living, the Ashland/Hanover world has been blessed with an event that holds up to its people the values of being neighborly, of sharing time, resources, and talents with other people, and thus contributing positively to the world.

Camden Byrd scored on a 5-yard run on the Patriots’ first drive to open the scoring. The Patriots held Atlee to 158 total yards. Eric Rankin carried nine times for 42 yards for the Raiders. Patrick Henry continues to be in a group of four schools – with Monacan, King George and Louisa – that are unbeaten atop Region 4B. Lurking behind them are one-loss teams Eastern View, Powhatan, and the Patriots’ next opponent: Hanover. “We know we need a great week. We know that it’s the one,” Allen explained when asked about their second meeting with the Hawks, who took the Patriots to the limit before falling 22-14 on March 5. Head Coach Ken Wakefield knows Friday’s contest could be an elimination game when it comes to the postseason. “One thing we tell our kids, you’re going to hit adversity,” Wakefield said. “You just don’t know when it’s going to come, and it’s how you respond to it.” Hanover hopes to bring plenty of adversity to Patrick Henry beginning at 6 p.m. Friday. By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – A final score can be quite deceptive. Patrick Henry’s 28-6 win over Atlee Friday night to sweep the Raiders in two meetings and move to 4-0 came in a game very much in doubt early in the fourth quarter. A forced fumble by Atlee (1-3), recovered by Tyler Garr and returned 28 yards for a touchdown with 9:28 remaining cut a precarious Patriot lead to 12-6. Enter Jordan Allen. The junior quarterback, who broke off a 56-yard run on the Patriots’ first play from scrimmage, found a hole up the middle, turned right, and raced 38 yards to the Atlee 35. “I got all those yards and thought, it’s my time. Let’s go get it,” Allen said. On the next play, Allen went left, gaining 18 yards. His next carry traveled 9 yards. On the fourth play of the drive, he patiently waited for two blocks to his left, then bolted for the pylon, breaking the plane of the goal line just ahead of an Atlee defender. For good measure, Allen converted a 2-point conversion that made it 20-6 Patriots with 7:05 remaining. In the blink of an eye he did it again. James Valentine’s recovery of a Raider fumble on the first play of the ensuing possession set up Patrick Henry at the Atlee 9-yard line. Allen, who wears No. 9, looked left, cut up the

Samardge stays steady in Hanover victory By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Placekickers rarely attract the plaudits given to other skill positions in football, like quarterbacks, running backs, receivers and the like, but that doesn’t mean their jobs are any less important for the success of their teams. Friday night, Hanover placekicker Ethan Samardge more than earned his stripes. With less than a minute before the first half expired, the game scoreless and the Hawks with the ball on fourth down at the Mechanicsville 6, Hanover called a timeout to prepare for a field goal attempt. The Mustangs then followed with three timeouts of their own to see if they could rattle the Hawk kicker. The ploy didn’t work. With a wisp of a second remaining, Samardge launched a 24-yard lob toward the goal posts. It didn’t look like it would make it. The ball started to fade short and drifted right – but it just found its way through the uprights. Those three points proved the winning margin in Hanover’s 17-14 win. “Three points on the board, that’s what won the game, but it was the entire team, the entire unit,” Samardge said. “I couldn’t have done it without them. It was 100% team effort.” But there comes a time where the burden is all on Samardge – and his ability to tune all the distractions out. “It’s just me and the ball,” he said. “They tried to throw me off mentally with those three timeouts, I think it was. It don’t work. I stay locked in almost like we do in practice. You’ve got to stay calm. You’ve got to No matter how locked in he toward the upright. ” Samardge said. “My left foot block out all the noises and may be, he can still feel stress “You better bet I was pray- slipped a little bit because the everybody yelling at you.” – as he did as the ball drifted ing. that’s no excuse. I still was praying for it to go in. It was a close one.” The muddy ground contributed to a number of slips throughout the game as both offenses struggled at times. The heavy rains of the latter part of the week did not help the field’s

condition. It and the cold contributed to a number of turnovers by both offenses. The Mustangs went ahead in the third quarter on an 8-yard run by quarterback Logan Harris, but the lead did not last long. The Hawks responded with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, both on runs by Hanover quarterback Levi Huesman of 8 and 12 yards, respectively. Samardge supplied both extra points. Huesman led the Hawk offense, completing 15-of-29 passes for 125 yards and carrying the ball 23 times for 68 yards and his two touchdowns. Mechanicsville got the final score of the game in the final minute on a 1-yard run by Avant Johnson. The Mustang placekicker, Thomas Richman, was steady as well, providing both Mechanicsville extra points. The victory is further evidence that Hanover head coach Sam Rogers’ efforts to instill a winning mentality at Hanover is paying off. “We’ve been at it since February of last year,” Samardge said. “The coaching staff, all the kids, everything has changed. The culture is completely different at Hanover. It’s on its way back to where it once was. We’re on a roll. I could not be more proud of the coaches and the entire team.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com. Raider girls win close one at Patrick Henry By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND – Looking at the final match score of 3-1, one could be excused for thinking that Atlee girls volleyball team dominated the floor at Patrick Henry Wednesday night. But anyone coming to that conclusion would be wrong. Three of the four games went into extra time, and the other just missed the opportunity. Atlee on the first match 31-29, and the second one 28-26. The Patriots took the third game 26-24 before the

Raiders claimed the match with a 25-22 win in the final game. “Patrick Henry’s a good team. We knew they’re a good team,” said Atlee head coach Curtis Carpenter. “Especially coming here. They bring energy from someplace, from way down in the depths of something. I don’t know where, but they bring it.” The energy was most evident in the fourth game when the Patriots hoped to send the match to five. Youth step up in R-MC win over visiting Guilford By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – Coming off a disappointing 24-8 defeat at the hands of No. 11 Christopher Newport Wednesday, Randolph-Macon men’s lacrosse entered Senior Day on Saturday looking to apply the lessons learned from that loss. The Yellow Jackets, whose starting lineup includes freshmen both in goal and on attack, are still developing their

22

chemistry in a season where little is normal thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Though they turned in an uneven performance in a 16-10 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Guilford at Day Field, Randolph-Macon came closer together. “We only have five seniors. We have some pretty talented juniors and sophomores, but those young guys are very capable,” Yellow Jacket head coach J.B. Sheridan said. “They need

experience, not only for themselves personally but they need experience for us as a group, chemistry-wise.” Goalkeeper Oz Potter, from nearby Midlothian High School, has been stellar between the pipes so far, registering eight saves in Saturday’s win, anchoring a defense that kept the Quakers off the scoreboard for nearly 21 minutes in a first half stretch that saw Randolph-Macon (3-2, 2-0 ODAC) go on an eight-goal

run that turned a 2-2 tie into a 10-2 advantage. Junior Jack Averna scored all four of his team-leading four goals in a nearly 13-minute timeframe, half in the aforementioned run. Guilford ended it on a goal from DiMaggio Wilson with 2:37 left in the second period for a 10-3 halftime margin. The learning for the Yellow Jackets continued in an uneven third period, which saw the Quakers score three of the first

four goals to trim their deficit to 11-6. Finally, on a man-advantage, Ryan Pritchard, another freshman, and one of three Yellow Jackets to score three goals, fired a shot past Guilford goalkeeper Jack Rogers with 2:58 left in the quarter. Nick Homkomp answered just 19 seconds later, but junior Brandon Smith scored one of his three goals less than a minute later, making it 13-7 Yellow Jackets. The teams traded goals to start the final period, then,

with 8:22 left, Pritchard took a pass from Cameron Foti and scored, the second of three straight Randolph-Macon goals to put the game out of reach. The final goal, fittingly, came from senior attacker Michael Peters, who entered the game when freshman Jack Smith, who scored three goals, was shaken up. Taylor, Crytser claim wins at Poor Farm Park By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND – Patrick Henry’s Luke Taylor may have smoked the field, but Mechanicsville High School’s teamwork helped the Mustangs prevail in the boys race in a Hanover County cross country quad Wednesday afternoon at Poor Farm Park. The soggy conditions of earlier in the day did not seem to slow any of the athletes. Taylor sprinted to the finish, clocking in at 15:38, 25 seconds ahead of Mechanicsville’s Grayson Clark. Clark led a tight grouping with No. 3 Ethan Coleman of Hanover and No. 4 Travis Albon of Atlee. The trio finished the 5-kilometer course in 16:03, 16:04 and 16:07, respectively. The Mustang boys finished with 34 points, followed by Atlee (52), Patrick Henry (61) and Hanover (78). “I was very pleased with how we ran today,” said Mechanicsville head coach Joey Wingo. “We had a nice little

group of runners. We packed it in. … We ran well as a team and it showed in the results.” Patrick Henry head coach Jeremy Dobrinski wasn’t expecting Taylor to come in so hard and fast. “He was not necessarily supposed to be going hard because we just came off a bunch of different races,” Dobrinski said. “But he felt comfortable and you can’t take anything away from the weather.” While the day began damp, and some of the course was a bit soggy, the cool temperatures made for good running weather. Hanover’s Alli Crytser won the girls race by 48 seconds, coming in at 18:26 while runner up Rachel Mudd of Atlee finished in 19:14. Mechanicsville’s Sierra Puleo was third in 19:17. “We were a little bit legweary because we worked hard on Monday,” said Hanover head coach Rich Firth. “Alli Crytser ran really, really well and ran away from the field and ran a nice time for a Wednesday meet.”

Winding down

While Kali Denney was Patrick Henry’s highest finisher in the girls race in fifth place, she led the Patriots to victory in team scores with 26 points to Hanover’s 32. Neither the Atlee nor the Mechanicsville girls had enough varsity girls to score as a team.

He knows the scout of the oppo-

Groover writes ‘Environmental Cartoons for Teachers Staff Report news@mechlocal.com Dr. Richard Groover, who recently retired from Reynolds Community College, recently wrote “Environmental Cartoons for Teachers”, which, he said, can be a useful educational resource for teachers, at any level of education. “With over 40 cartoons, teachers can copy the images to assist with teaching environmental and biological topics to students,” he said, noting he had used the cartoons for years. “The cartoons are great conversation starters for students. They reveal interesting images on many topics covered in environmental science, earth science, and other biology courses.” Across the page from each image is a short statement that relates to the cartoon. One cartoon mentions that insects and pollinators provide a service for three-

quarters of all our food crops, a value of $500 billion per year. Another cartoon mentions the “Wood Wide Web” and how trees “talk” to each other. The book is endorsed by the Virginia Science Teachers Association stating, “ ‘The Environmental Cartoons for Teachers’ is a useful educational resource for teachers, at any level of education to get

the conversations started.” Science educator Dr. Anne Mannorino said, “This book uses the power of over 40 visual cartoons to address environmental issues today . . . If you teach any form of environmental sciences, then this book could be the stimulus needed to start much needed important conversations.” Groover began paying students 20 years ago for the images. They are very professional. The students got something published and made a few dollars. The book is on sale for the price of $12. Once you purchase a copy of the book, the buyer is given the legal rights to use the cartoons, in public, for educational purposes. Dr. Groover is an occasional adjunct faculty member at Randolph-Macon College and is a current board member at the Science Museum of Virginia.
