Struggling businesses get help from county office By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE -- In addition to closing schools and disrupting the lives of millions of citizens, the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis is having devastating effects on local businesses. Despite an array of government-based grants and loans, the challenges of surviving a total shutdown of the economy are significant. In addition to attracting new business to the county, Hanover County’s Office of Economic Development also is charged with supporting existing businesses in the county. When news of the pandemic emerged, the agency began a robust effort to gauge the impacts and provide assistance to local businesses.

2 p.m. Monday news briefing. His goal date for a return to business targets Friday, May 15, with the restrictions easing Thursday night, May 14. “Make it very clear this virus is still here; it has not gone away and it will not go

away until we have a vaccination, and that may be at the end of this year or another year or two. All of our efforts have slowed its spread, but they have not cured the disease.” He did say that “on the path forward, always be aware the

virus is still with us.” “We will behave more cautiously than before; we must not relax our vigilance, especially with the most vulnerable populations [the elderly and those with existing conditions].

In Phase I, he said Virginians are safer at home; “large gatherings are still a bad idea,” with no social gatherings of more than 10 individuals continuing. The Governor also said Phase 1 calls for the continuance of teleworking, face

County government making food kits available today, Friday HANOVER -- Hanover County government will continue to make food kits available to the community on Wednesday, May 6, and Friday, May 8, at John M. Gandy Elementary School and Mechanicsville Elementary School. The pre-packaged food kits will be available, two meals per person, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on each of those days. This is a separate and distinct food program from the one being offered to children by Hanover County Public Schools. The Hanover Education Foundation, working in partnership with Hanover County Government and Hanover County Public Schools, received funding for this purpose from the Central Virginia COVID-19 Response Fund. These meals supplement the student meal program and the work of many food pantries and churches. Depending on the demand, the county government will schedule additional dates, as long as supplies last. Those who need food will be able to drive through designated lanes at the school to

pick up the kits, with as little human contact as possible for health reasons. Kits include a ready to eat entrée such as chicken salad, tuna salad, or BBQ beef, a tortilla, bag of chips, granola bar, trail mix, cookie, fruit roll up, and juice box. One box per person will be available. To donate or volunteer, visit https://www.togetheroneregion.org/. “Thank you to the Community Foundation, the Emergency Management Alliance of Central Virginia, United Way, the Hanover Education Foundation, Plan RVA, the founding contributors, and everyone else associated with this initiative,” said Jim Taylor, deputy county administrator. “It is really impressive to see this take shape so quickly to help to meet the nutrition needs of many in our community. We are proud to be a part of it.” For more information, contact the Hanover County Department of Community Resources at 804-365-4300. Bon Secours joins plasma program for COVID-19 Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com RICHMOND -– Bon Secours announced it has joined the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) national Expanded Access Program (EAP) for Convalescent Plasma as a treatment protocol for COVID-19. Convalescent plasma is collected from individuals who have recovered from the virus, and it is administered to the patients with COVID19 who are at high risk of progression to a severe or life-threatening stage of the disease. Convalescent plasma has been safely collected and used at various times over the past century to treat polio, measles, hepatitis B, influenza, Ebola, and other pathogens. The FDA designated the Mayo Clinic as the lead institution for the program. Due to the unprecedented need for an enhanced response to the pandemic, the expanded access to the

so that all that is left is the plasma with the antibodies. A single plasma donation has the potential to help up to four patients with COVID-19. Investigative convalescent plasma used within the guidelines of the EAP is different from antibody testing, which also is referred to as serologic testing for COVID-19. While both programs use antibodies found in a person’s blood, investigative convalescent plasma is a treatment for patients with COVID-19 who are at high risk of progression to a severe or lifethreatening stage of the disease. In comparison, serologic testing is a new laboratory blood test developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to assist with efforts to determine how much of the U.S. population has been exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19. Wear the mask and gloves: Save a life

| Reader Views

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor reshman year of junior high school (back in the old days before the middle school concept was implemented in West Virginia) was highlighted by an assignment about career dreams. At the time, I was fascinated by psychiatry, especially the works of Dr. Sigmund Freud. While doing research on the profession, I realized that I would never make it through medical school to pursue a specialized field. But, despite that setback, I accepted the fact that I am curious about human behavior. When friends and I would go shopping, I was the one who, while waiting, was content to sit on

F

a bench observing people and how they interact. Today, however, I find myself becoming more agitated during the limited periods outside of my house. It’s frustrating enough to see adults not adhering to safety guidelines during these unusual and unknown times of the coronavirus. Last week, I saw some people either with a mask and gloves on or just a mask. Yet, there were far too many out and about without a mask or gloves. It’s bad enough that adults are endangering others with their poor decisions, but I’ve seen too many children without any protective gear. Parents, keep your children safe. It really is a matter of life or death. The most frightening sight was a young

woman who was probably seven to eight months pregnant. She was walking around without a mask and gloves. In addition to putting herself at risk, she also was gambling with the life of her unborn child. The new look is imperative. We must do all we can to follow the directives of Gov. Northam. This isn’t an issue of politics. It is about saving lives as medical personnel and scientists work to find a vaccine to stop this pandemic. Please, wear a mask and gloves. The emphasis is about decreasing the number of COVID-19 cases and resuming life in some manner of normalcy. I won’t go so far as saying normal, because I think we’re going to see a new norm. In the meantime, stay safe and wear the gear.

Only the luckiest are ‘on a roll’ these days By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Sometimes, you just can’t escape addressing the toughest and most pressing of issues. You know the kinds of things I’m talking about — issues that everyone is talking about or items that affect all of us in our everyday lives. In that vein, I embarked for answers to one of the pesky and most

asked questions in America today. While other items have made remarkable comebacks after initial runs on grocery stores, the toilet paper aisle at my local market remains as bare as the territory it’s designed to serve. I’m not the only one making this awkward inquiry. I found numerous message boards and posts that displayed a dismayed public growing more impatient with each passing day and reflecting a king-sized lament

over the lack of toilet tissue. Now, it’s easy to understand how toilet paper and other items quickly disappeared from the shelves as Americans were faced with an unknown period of quarantine and uncertainty linked to dwindling household supplies and food. The initial action by Governor Northam produced a run on the supermarkets not unlike the crowds generated by the hint of impending

snow or hurricanes. Unlike those territorial disasters, this one involved a nationwide barrage on supplies, with hand sanitizer and toilet paper taking the biggest hit. After weeks, I would have assumed most people have enough toilet paper to last for the most severe of quarantines, assuming the mediation we are enduring did not include laxatives. To my dismay, the aisles are still empty see ROLL, pg. 8

Return to normal will not take place overnight When will COVID-19 restrictions be lifted? Seemingly overnight, SASR-2 coronavirus wreaked havoc on America’s roaring economy, devastating businesses and the nation’s workforce. And the damage extends well beyond economic. Bans on hospital volunteers impose a burden on overworked medical staffs, while patients are denied the emotional support of family, friends and clerics. Our quality of life has been dismantled. We are prohibited from attending church and patronizing entertainment venues, and we need an appointment to enter our bank. In public, masks and surgical gloves are commonplace as is treating strangers like lepers and avoiding physical contact with people we know and love. Let’s take a brief look at the danger of this pandemic. The following data was extracted from Virginia Health Department daily reports for COVID19, which noted more than half confirmed outbreaks occurred in longterm care facilities. Date, cases and deaths: April 22, 10,266, and 349; April 23, 10,998, and 372; and April 24, 11,594, and 410. Undoubtedly, the impact of the disease has been impeded by mandated societal changes. Virginia’s infection rate based on its population is approximately 0.14%, of which 3.6% died, which as of now is much lower than Center for Disease Control (CDC) national data – infection rate of 0.25%, of which 5.6% died. By comparison, CDC national data on influenza last season ranges from 39,000,000 to 56,000,000 cases and 24,000 to 62,000 deaths; despite having an effective inoculation for the flu, it remains a formidable killer, yet we don’t fear it. see LETTERS, pg. 8

hoteliers understanding new safety protocols will be necessary,” the director said. It’s a question on the minds of county officials daily, and Thomas’ office is closely monitoring a fluid situation. “We are following this closely and we understand many people are struggling and just want to open their doors again,” he said. The county has adhered to Northam’s stay-at-home orders and other guidelines. “We continue to recommend our businesses follow the mandates set forth by the Governor, but we do have several local Hanover- and Ashland-based businesses that have been appointed to the Governor’s Task Force that are working hard to advocate for our local restaurateurs, hoteliers and retailers not to mention those other industries hardest hit by this pandemic,” Thomas said. The unique and random nature of the virus made it difficult for local agencies to predict or prepare. “These are unprecedented

and only the most savvy of shoppers know when to hit the store at the most opportune time to find the product. I couldn’t get any answers as to when the shortage might end, and even the companies that produce what we once considered a necessity aren’t sure when the shelves will be full again. But, those officials did supply reasonable accounts of

how we got in this mess. It seems toilet paper production is pretty predictable and companies rely on historical data to gauge just how many sheets to produce. Ramping up that production is more difficult than it sounds with factories staffed and tooled to produce a normal supply. In addition, the virus has affected work schedules at those factories. By mid-April, most big producers have increased quotas — but when it will reach your spindle is still unclear.

Before we go any further, let me make it clear we have toilet paper at my house. Mysteriously, I find myself searching for it even though we have at least a month’s supply. To my surprise, I discovered I might be part of the problem. After a couple of frustrating days of searching for answers, I somewhat jokingly asked the store manager if he knew when people might be able to start using the bathroom again. A recent Stanford University study suggests COVID-19 is more widespread, bringing its death rate closer to influenza. Irrespective of any data or its accuracy, two things are true: (1) operating under the current restrictions threatens America as we knew it and (2) the return to normal will not be overnight. Questioning uproar about Wegmans’ plan (Editor’s note: The following was addressed to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors.) First, I want to say, I am not a “come here” to Hanover County. ter, and spoke in an almost whispered tone as he explained how toilet paper aisles remain empty day after day. He informed me that when rolls come in and are placed on the shelves, they immediately sell out. It seems people who don’t actually need any more toilet paper can’t resist just the sight of the available product and scoop it up. Who would have thought the thoughtlessness of some consumers would lead to shortages for others leading to

unspeakable inconveniences? With the information he provided, I ventured to ask one more question. I feared it was a bridge too far, and it was. In response to my question regarding when was the best time to arrive at the store to get toilet paper, he moved away and told me he didn’t know. On further investigation, I discovered that grocery stores are hesitant to publish restocking schedules fearing a run on their stores that would violate current restrictions and make

I am sick and tired of the whining and belly aching from the anti-Wegmans’ groups. Second, I want to address some of the reasons being brought up against the project. z “Keep Hanover Hanover”. Huh? If we kept “Hanover Hanover”, there would not be a Foxhead, Kings Charter, Milestone, and Ashcreek. All of you “antis” would be living where? Who cares?! We would still have agricultural farmland and wooded acreage and none of you. z “The trucks are a danger to our children”. What? As parents you allow your children to play in the streets. Every one of you should be charged with neglect and endangerment to your children. Don’t you have yards, playgrounds, and homes in your neighborhood? Just ride through any of the mentioned neighborhoods and children are skateboarding, playing basketball (hoops set up on state-maintained roads), etc., in the street. Children running amuck and no parents in sight! Parents who have never

taught children the rules for riding bicycles on state-maintained roads. Third, the litter you are placing all over the county. If you think placing signs illegally on roadways throughout the county is gaining support, you are wrong. If the signs had not shown up in the eastern part of the county, I would have stayed out of the debate. Disgusting! Keep your litter in your neighborhoods. The Hanover Air Park is an industrial complex. I say “Welcome Wegmans”. We should encourage more businesses like this in the county. Obviously, the residents of this area and a couple of our supervisors think more of themselves instead of what is best for Hanover County. The two “lady” liberals on the board of supervisors think more about votes than they do about what is best for the county. Having been involved in a recent rezoning for solar panels, one of the liberal supervisors’ logic was that owners of property should be able to do as they

social distancing impossible. The whole experience left me more appreciative of the pile of toilet paper sitting in our bathroom closet, but still somehow unfulfilled in my search. But, I’ve also learned my quarantine-inspired lesson, and I will end my search for the elusive item. I’ll try to live in the reality that if I don’t need it I won’t buy it. Besides, I’ve set my sights on loftier goals. We’re running low on hand sanitizer. Empresstree Lane, Mechanicsville.

MRMC receives ‘A’ for patient Artist’s pandemic perspective safety in 2020 Leapfrog Grade Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com RICHMOND – Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital and Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center have each been awarded with an “A” from The Leapfrog Group’s spring 2020 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. The designation recognizes the hospitals’ efforts in protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care. The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization committed to improving health care

Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public. St. Mary’s Hospital and Memorial Regional Medical Center were awarded “A” grades, when Leapfrog announced grades for the spring 2020 update. Helene Ruiz has expressed herself in this painting during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. She said it is an acrylic on canvas 16x10 that she completed on March 26. She also shares her artist’s statement: "This painting is intended to help remind us of the priorities and perhaps the image will make the reality more apparent to make the small sacrifice to stay home and save lives a lot easier if we think of all those on the front lines. So the next time you complain about being stuck inside, just think about all the first responders sacrificing their lives and the lives of their own loved ones while they are on the battlefield to save lives which is why you are safe at home! Next time you complain and go out because you are bored think about how much tougher their battle to help save lives becomes. It is not much to do in comparison to those out there face to face every second of the day with a deadly virus. If anyone who is feeling carefree and not respecting the importance of this deadly virus and is carrying this virus and because they feel fine and may be asymptomatic, go out and spread to others who then in turn can get extremely ill and even die because someone else was too selfish to think of the next person. Our sacrifice is a small one. Stay home! Easy! We get to turn off the TVs and the radio and can choose not to read the papers. The first responders do not have this option. Stop complaining and make the simple sacrifice to help save lives. Just stay home! Stay safe and be mindful of the lives of others. Every time you are frustrated, think of the first responders putting their lives on the line for the rest of us. Please, stay home. Make the sacrifice and be strong. We are in this together and we all must do our part."

SHLAND – While the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues, prompting the cancellation of the Ashland Strawberry Faire, there is some good news for strawberry lovers. The mild winter has led to what the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) calls “a very impressive crop this year.” To assist pick-your-own (PYO) strawberry farms and individual farm stands during the COVID-19 pandemic, VDACS has posted guidance on the department’s COVID19 Emergency Information Center website.

Metro Creative Services

The PYO farms and individual farm stands guidance includes on-site and educational recommendations business owners can implement to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and protect employees and patrons. Additional social distancing and operational information is available in the Farmers’ Market Frequently Asked Questions document. “I encourage strawberry lovers and health-conscious

consumers to support their local producers and Virginia’s economy by purchasing fresh, Virginia grown strawberries from a nearby farm, farmers’ market, roadside stand or grocery store,” said Dr. Jewel Bronaugh, VDACS Commissioner. “Consumers can find local strawberry pick-your-own farms and retailers by searching VirginiaGrown.com.” Consumers should call PYO farms before traveling to learn how they are operating this year. When visiting a PYO farm or farm stand, be sure to practice social distancing and follow statewide safety guidelines. For more up-to-date information on Virginia agriculture, follow VDACS on Twitter and Facebook.

The Universe from the Center: Delving into general relativity By Dr. George Spagna Special to The Mechanicsville Local Note: The Keeble Observatory at RandolphMacon College has ceased operations (including public viewing) due to the pandemic until further notice. Watch the website (https://www. rmc.edu/keeble) for updates or call the Keeble Information line at 804-752-3210. In 1915, Albert Einstein published his General Theory of Relativity. This was 10 years after the Special Theory in 1905, part of his socalled miracle year. Special relativity deals with reference frames in uniform unaccelerated relative motion. As a consequence of the invariance of physical laws, space and time become a fused entity called space-time. Clocks in motion run slow, and lengths along the line of mutual motion are contracted. The relativity is because you always see the other frame time dilated and length contracted – and vice versa.

The Mechanicsville Local

General relativity extends these ideas to treat reference frames that are in mutual acceleration. It becomes the underlying theory to explain and describe gravity. Mass and energy warp space-time; warped space time tells mass and energy how to move. Solving the “field equations” for the whole universe does not allow for a static result. The universe must either expand or contract. Einstein disliked this result, so he added a term (the “cosmological constant” – sort of a longrange antigravity) to keep the universe in a steady state of rest. But then Edwin Hubble announced the result of his observations, that the more distant galaxies were moving away at a recession veloc-

ity proportional to their distance. The universe is expanding! Einstein withdrew the cosmological term, calling it the greatest blunder of his career. If he had stuck with the original version of GTR he could have predicted universal expansion and challenged the astronomers to confirm it! A reader asks if some galaxies are getting closer together in spite of the universal tendency to get farther apart. The answer is yes. Expansion happens on the largest distance scales. Metro Creative Services Clusters and superclusters of galaxies are gravitationally bound systems, and galaxies within these systems are in mutual orbits around the collective center of mass.

Within our own cluster, known as the Local Group, the two largest galaxies are the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy. Not only are we moving toward one another, but the galaxies will collide in about 5 billion years. Stellar orbits will be disrupted, though collisions between individual stars are virtually impossible. Over hundreds of millions of years the two spiral galaxies will merge a form an elliptical galaxy. This process of galactic cannibalism is fairly common – you can find many images with a simple Google search. We’ll follow this story over the next several columns, and will eventually revisit Einstein’s “blunder” – it turns out the cosmological term has returned! Reliable data results in excellent decision-making. Poor or unsupported data results in skimpy decisions, at best. If you are getting your data

Are these the same people who would build next to a farm, then fuss about farm odors, or slow farm equipment? Focusing on the ‘student’ in student-athlete Twins keep grades up, find success as trainers By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND – One may be forgiven for thinking that Jasmine and Tyler Pinder are identical twins. They are the same height. They have the same build. They have similar facial features. Their voices are similar. And, yes, they are twins. The only easily spotted hint that they aren’t identical is something nature didn’t give them: Jasmine has hints of red toward the tips of her ample braids, while Tyler has more brownishblondish hints toward the tips of her equally ample braids. But they are not identical twins, which makes it surprising that their academic, athletic and now professional careers have been as tightly intertwined as their locks. The diminutive pair – both measuring in at 5 feet, 1 inch – were integral parts of a Patrick Henry girls basketball team that won the Dominion District

18

tournament in 2013, their senior year. The guards went on to play all four of their years together at Bridgewater College. But the two women were as equally determined to prepare for a life after sports, graduating with a 4.0 average from Patrick Henry and maintaining a similar level of academic excellence at Bridgewater – whether they were accepted into the college’s first graduate class in athletic training. They did not plan it that way. “It kind of started in high school. I wanted to be a lawyer,” Tyler said. “And I wanted to be a physical therapist,” said Jasmine. “But then I got hurt in my senior year at Patrick Henry playing basketball,” said Tyler. “I tore my ACL and meniscus.” The injury occurred the last week of the Patriots’ regular season at Hermitage. Tyler would be sidelined through the playoffs. Her experience as she recovered gave her a different perspective. “Through my whole rehab process, physical therapy process, I was like, ‘You know what? This seems pretty cool. Why don’t we do something like this?’” Tyler said. Both were inclined toward physical therapy, but after arriving at Bridgewater they decided

Jasmine (left) and Tyler Pinder were talented guards on the Patrick Henry girls and Bridgewater College women’s basketball teams. They were also good students, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Bridgewater. They now work as athletic trainers for Physical Therapy Solutions. Jasmine also serves as trainer for Highland Springs while Tyler serves as trainer at King William.

upon a different tack. “We thought about being physical therapists for the longest, but then, athletic training was pretty big – a pretty big major – at Bridgewater,” Tyler said. “We kind of got pulled into that being … athletes, and so that was the route we thought was best for us.” While athletic training and physical therapy are similar, there are significant differences. “What physical therapy is, it’s more [focused] on the rehab process,” Jasmine said. “Athletic training, not only are we rehab specialists, but we do injury prevention with our athletes, emergency care – first person on the field or court when anyone gets hurt – and, like physical therapists, we do help them return to play from the very beginning stages, all the way from surgery up to returning to their sport and getting back on the field.” They both majored in Health and Exercise Science, graduating in 2017. Just as they had done at Patrick Henry, the pair worked as hard on their studies as on basketball, so much so that, when Bridgewater started a master’s program in athletic training, they had no trouble entering that program’s first class. It was an easy transition for Jasmine and Tyler. They knew the faculty, the faculty knew them, and they got a long well. That first graduate class graduated last year, and Jasmine and Tyler celebrated the first anniversary of passing their board exams on April 30. After graduation, their career tracks briefly diverged, but not for long. Tyler was the first to land a job at Physical Therapy Solutions in Mechanicsville. “She got hired a month before I did,” Jasmine said. “We were applying to different places,” Tyler said. “I

got hired there first and a few weeks later, they had another spot open, and I was like, ‘You know what, just apply.’ Fresh out of school, wanted a job, and we both ended up there.” They don’t get tired of frequently finding themselves in the same place. In fact, it has helped having someone close working more or less alongside. “We enjoy it,” Jasmine said. “We get along very well,” Tyler said. “We do get along very well,” Jasmine said. “I mean, we have our sister moments, but we love bouncing ideas off of each other. We do see things differently, so it’s its just nice having my person, a person with me all the time to bounce something off. “There’s a lot of siblings that go the same path. We just happen to look alike.” They aren’t together all the time. Physical Therapy Solutions serves as a contractor providing athletic training services to a number of local schools. Jasmine works for Virginia High School League Class 5 Highland Springs High School, while Tyler works for VHSL Class 2 King William. “We are apart a lot,” Tyler said. “Sometimes, we only see each other for five minutes out of the day when we get home and we’re trying to go to bed and stuff.”

An athletic trainer’s job is pretty much the same, no matter where the job is done. “You try to provide the best care for your athletes,” Jasmine said. “Sometimes 10 people can walk through my door. Sometimes 20.” Tyler has similar days at King William, with one major exception: she also teaches sports medicine 1 and 2 at the school. “I’m busy with that, too, quite a lot along with handling all the after-school events: practices, games,” she said. “That’s the main difference. Other than that, athletes are athletes. … It doesn’t matter the level.” Jasmine said the mentality that made them succeed as athletes drives them to succeed as trainers now. “Even though we played Division III basketball, we still had the same mindset of getting our workouts in, giving it the best we can, just like – I would say – a Division I mindset would be, too,” she said. “I just try to give my all to my athletes just like I gave my all in my sport.” Jasmine and Tyler continue to work with high school students recovering from injuries. Some of their charges have been keeping up with their schoolwork online, others – not so much. The sisters owe their careers

– and the quick start they have had in it – to the fact that they minded their studies. It’s a lesson they would like other student-athletes to take to heart. “You could be just one injury away from everything ending. But also, there’s other opportunities out there,” Jasmine said. “At Bridgewater, we didn’t go in with the mindset of going

into the WNBA and going pro. We in there, like, ‘Wow, these are my last four years of playing organized basketball.’ So we made the most of it. Just like with your schoolwork. I think it was our senior year, our last two months at Bridgewater [as undergraduates], that’s when we learned about the master’s program. Because our grades

were right and we had a good relationship with the professors there, that’s how we got into the master’s program and got the opportunity. “I would say the same energy you put into your sports, channel that into your academic work, because you don’t know what opportunities you may have.”

Local teen taking talents to Texas By Melody Kinser mkinser@mechlocal.com

Abram Dean’s “first real thing in terms of performing paid off earlier this year when he captured the title of Hanover Junior Idol. Thanks to some encouragement from his mom Debbie Lunsford, he took the leap into the world of music. And now the 16-year-old from Mechanicsville is preparing to move to Texas to pursue his dream. On Aug. 20, Abram and his mother will head to Dallas where he has been accepted to study — and hone his skills — with the Linda Septien Entertainment Group. Debbie said she suggested Abram enter the Hanover Arts and Activities Centersponsored Idols competition because he “wants to get into this music thing, so let’s see TEEN, pg. 14

“be able to get a haircut,” with an appointment; “less seating will be available in restaurants and employees will wear face coverings and do more cleaning.” More retail establishments will be opening, but operating at a lower capacity. Gyms will be opening as the facilities adhere to more requirements for cleaning. Northam said the state would “accommodate the needs of churches and houses of worship with social distancing.” He noted, “It still matters -- even at church. Moving toward Phase II, Northam said the state would continue to ease restrictions “if we see our numbers ease down.” Social gatherings could increase from 10 to 50 people. Phase III, the Governor said, is contingent upon “No evidence of a rebound for a sustained time.” The state’s first COVID-

19 positive case was reported on March 7, “just shy of two months ago,” he added. “Our lives have changed drastically since then. At that time, across the country, Americans feared that hospitals would be overwhelmed. We worried that we wouldn’t have enough ICU beds or ventilators, not enough PPE or testing supplies. So, here in Virginia, we asked you to stay home.” “Everyone in Virginia made sacrifices – everything you have done has truly made a difference,” Northam continued. “We have flattened the curve, hospitals are not overwhelmed.” As of Monday morning, the number of deaths had reached 684, with 662 of them being confirmed. Total cases were 19,492, with 18,640 confirmed and 852 probable. Total hospitalizations hit 2,700, with 2,681 being confirmed and 19 probable.
