Not even the heat can keep folks away from Mechanicsville’s biggest event of the year MECHANICSVILLE – Mother Nature has yet to deter folks from Hanover and surrounding counties from attending the Hanover Tomato Festival. And that was the case over the weekend when temperatures in the 90s couldn’t keep about 22,000 visitors from enjoying the festivities Friday eve-

ning and Saturday at Pole Green Park.

The festival, considered “the” event in Mechanicsville, saw an increase in Friday’s turnout due to the cooler evening temperatures.

County flag finds new home in courthouse after four decades

ANOVER -- It’s never too late to go home.

In 1976, Frank Cooke was working as an architect and was tapped to design a county flag for Hanover County. Upon completion

of the production process, he was handed the first two flags completed to keep as reminders of his role in the flag’s creation.

Last month, Cooke transferred those two flags to a place he felt would be more appropriate for such an important piece of Hanover County hissee FLAG pg. 3

Skaggs commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Roosevelt based in Mayport, Florida.

After earning her surface warfare credentials, she will attend nuclear power school in Charleston, South Carolina.

She is the daughter of John and Beth Skaggs of Manassas.

“However, there was no flag ever designed for the county.”

Cooke took on the task of supplying a remedy.

“I went back to the drawing board and came up with a plan for this flag,” he told the supervisors as he displayed a neatly wrapped flag.

annual festival. Of those, over 450 people enjoyed a tasting plate from Washington Henry Lodge #444.

In keeping with tradition, the tomatoes are provided by Hanover County farmers. This year’s fruit was delivered by Hanover Vegetable Farm and Rosa’s Garden.

“While the temperatures were in the mid-90s, festivalgoers stayed safe and hydrated, using the trams to/from their parking lots,” Durrer said.

“While strolling the event field, they learned more about many local businesses and organizations.”

She also said that attendees had the chance to purchase “great local products and tomato-themed merchandise from vendors, including our Most Spirited Tomato Booths – Drew’s Tomato Art, Perfectly Soy Candles, LLC and Amnageek Exllibris, and official merchandise provider, Inkt.”

Melon growers optimistic about plenty of cantaloupes, watermelons Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE — Virginia melon growers are optimistic that there will be plenty of refreshing local cantaloupes and watermelons for the hot summer days ahead.

Hanover County’s Kirby Farms grows more than 10 acres of cantaloupes and watermelons that are sold to a local distributor, Produce Source, and to retail fruit stands. “It looks like above average yield and quality for our melons this year,� said owner Kevin Kirby. “It got warm sooner this year, so we started harvesting about two weeks earlier than usual, in late June.

The hot, dry weather has been kind of hard on the vines but makes the melons sweeter.�

Kirby said the farm always makes a “good push� to get watermelons on the stands by the Fourth of July, and this year they made it.

Watermelons are grown on 773 acres on 338 Virginia farms, while cantaloupes are grown on 481 acres on 239 farms, according to the 2017 U.S. Census of Agriculture. “Melons are ideal for summer pic-

Black Caucus chair: No place for KKK in Hanover County

o matter our age, there will always be dates that stand out for their significance either personally or on a national scale of importance and historic relevance. One of those dates is July 20, 1969.

Before I proceed on this path, I’ll go ahead and put it out there: I’m one of those skeptics about the whole moon landing brouhaha.

A few weeks ago, I had mentioned that my parents insisted I watch the major event in space travel and what a coup it was for the United States to be the first to reach the moon.

I was five days shy of my 13th birthday, so an American walking on the moon wasn’t high on my list of how to use my time. But, my parents

did not concede. My sister had already left for Virginia Tech to start her freshman year, so the daughter who had zero interest in NASA and space was forced to “sit down and watch -- history is being made.”

When asked about dates that stand out in my lifetime, I usually remember Nov. 22, 1963, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. I was 7 years old and a second grade student. The school custodian came running down the wide hallway in tears very vocally exclaiming that “The President has been assassinated.” A hush fell over the class as our teacher proceeded to explain that word assassination.

OK, fast forward six years to a July night when Neil Armstrong exited Apollo 11 to take a step and speak these words: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Sadly, JFK did not live to see his dream of space travel become reality. His a goal was to land a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s.

How many of you know someone who is skeptical about the moon landing? I have a friend who will debate to his last breath that it was staged in Burbank, California. I’ve got to admit -there were times he made me think twice.

What I do know is that a pre-teen witnessed an event that changed how we view the night sky and wonder about what is out there.

Fifty years later, I can recall that grainy black and white image coming across the TV. Mom, Dad and I were gathered in the living room -- joining everybody in the country -- in seeing history being made live.

Here’s to Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, the second man to make that walk.

On September 11, 2001, thousands of these unsung heroes charged toward the World Trade Center after planes were used as bombs to attack our nation. For many it was their last assignment, and the rescue/fire/police community suffered unimaginable losses as the towers collapsed.

To the man and woman, these individuals charged toward a dangerous situation, dismissing any concern for personal safety or well-being, and sacrificed their lives trying to save others. We quickly and correctly labeled these first responders as heroes, a title richly earned and deserved.

As chairman of the Black Caucus of the Hanover County Democratic Committee, I am concerned about the Hanover County Board of Supervisors’ very anemic response to the Ku Klux Klan’s appearance and protest in Hanover.

With the exception of Supervisor Faye Prichard, those of you who responded didn’t seem too concerned that Hanover was the place the Klan picked to demonstrate and asked for membership support and those with no response, well “the silence was deafening”.

Bigotry and disdain for any human being is like a cancer and it eats at the core of our inalienable and God-given rights as our Constitution’s 9th Amendment so states the concept of “inalienable rights”.

The Ku Klux Klan ideas represent a deadly poisonous venom spewed on black and people of color and there is no place in Hanover County or America for this deep-rooted hatred because of the color of anyone’s skin.

Our nation thrived on diversification and will continue to do so. We fought that war and “WON” -- it ended May 9, 1865; this is 2019.

We, as Americans have too many issues to deal with these immoral and hateful acts and we will continue to stand and fight against theses vile forms of oppression.

We support the Hanover NAACP’s call on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors to speak out against racism and inequality and replace it’s cavalier message with one of dignity, moral character and support for all of the people they serve, all people of Hanover County.

Supervisor takes issue with what wasn’t in article [Richmond TimesDispatch reporter] Christopher Rojas reported this morning, July 7, 2019, on a small group of Klan members who gathered at Hanover Courthouse Saturday afternoon [July 6]. I do not know if Mr. Rojas actually went to the site of the gathering or simply called around to get other opinions.

I do know that he contacted me and we had a much longer conversation than what he reported in his article.

What bothers me is not what he wrote; but, what he didn’t write. What he wrote included some of my words but not the context of our conversation.

After asking if I was aware of the gathering, I explained that I was and that our Sheriff ’s Office had been in contact with the participants to insure that everything was peaceful and within the law. At that time, I believe the gathering had already dispersed. He then asked me “What is Hanover County going to do about it?�

This is where things went a little haywire. I told him that we would do nothing, as to do so would be in violation of the Constitution of the United States of America, which guarantees all of us the right to peacefully assemble and speak our views. This is very important to our very existence as these rights are what keep us free. These freedoms can only exist if they exist for all. We cannot guarantee them for the righteous and noble and deny them to those we see as less fit.

I made it clear that I condoned none of the Klu Klux Klan’s ideas or principles and that white supremacy is in no way condoned by me or any-

Since “hate-crime� is now a law requiring additional punishment, we need a law against “encouraging people to call a Ku Klux Klan hotline�; because it is a hate group that “disturbs

the peace� in our civilized society.

I bet the charter of the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan confirms that by those intentions. It is unbelievable this organization has survived into the 21st century.

Police Department detective who headed to Ground Zero as soon as he heard the call.

He spent the following weeks and months atop the massive pile of rubble that once was the WTC, assured by public officials the thick dusty air he was breathing was not toxic and did not present a threat to his health.

He was joined by thousands of workers who performed the difficult work of sifting through the rubble searching for human remains.

Turns out those guarantees of safety were, at best, ill informed, and Alvarez and hundreds of his co-workers became ill with serious health conditions, diseases that for all the world seemed related to their work at Ground Zero.

Alvarez fought a gallant battle with cancer for the last years of his life, coupled with what he called a war against those who would not concede

the connection or those who refused to assist those workers.

Both battles culminated in the past few weeks. Last month, Alvarez accompanied Jon Stewart to a congressional hearing on extending the 9-11 fund for victims, and provided emotional testimony that surely moved the bar on this important issue.

“You all said you would never forget,” Alvarez told members of the Committee.

“Well, I’m here to make sure that you don’t.” Sadly, Alvarez, 53, lost his battle with cancer a few days later.

Hopefully, this public servant passed with the knowledge that many normal Americans consider him a courageous warrior who displayed uncommon valor in the face of adversity.

And to this everyday man, that makes him a true American hero.

He wants nothing more than to be around you. Sushi was a stray cat but he is well adapted to domestic life. He is well litter-trained and keeps his cage very clean. Sushi also likes to talk. He will meow at you when he wants your attention. Sushi should do well as both an indoor or outdoor cat. OBITUARIES | Death Notices & Funerals JONES, Lee Alan, 71, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Mechanicsburg and Philadelphia, Pa., went to be with the Lord Thursday, July 11, 2019. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Velma (Arnold) Jones; and brother, Leonard Jones.

Lee is survived by his daughter, Courtney Henry; his son-in-law, Thomas Henry; and his three granddaughters, who were the light of his life, Brianna (11), JONES Savanna (8) and Sadie (5); as well as other friends and loved ones. He was a graduate of

Penn State University, which fostered his lifelong love for college football. Lee spent his career dedicated to serving others, working in Social Services for the state of Pennsylvania. He was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile and his kind and compassionate spirit. He will be missed dearly. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2019, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, with a Celebration of Life beginning at 2 p.m.

PARKER, Bobby Ray, went to be with the Lord July 10, 2019. Bobby was born in Kenly, North Carolina on November 27, 1935, to the late Lonnie and Willie (Strickland) Parker. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Frances Narron Parker. He is survived by his children, Deborah Parker Clark (Wayne) and Timothy Ray Parker (Kim); his only granddaughter, Cameron Clark Cole (Brandon); and three great-grandchildren, Christian, Hunter and Charlotte. Bobby retired from the City of Richmond, Utilities Department, after 39 years of service. He was devoted to his family and his church family at Hanover Evangelical Friends Church, where he served as head trustee and head usher for many years.

VAUGHAN, Terrell Dayton, 73, peacefully departed this life Sunday, July 7, 2019, at St. Mary’s Hospital. Terry was born April 29, 1946, in Clover, Virginia, to the late Edward Napoleon and Evelyn Andry Vaughan. He is survived by his wife, Carmen Kemp Vaughan; sister, Catherine Vaughan Williams and her husband, Sam; nephews, Parker Dayton Mills, Jacob Dalton Williams, Michael Edward Kemp and his wife,

Nicole; great-nephew, Ashton Michael Kemp. Terry grew up in Chase City, Virginia and graduated from Bluestone High School. He graduated from Phillips Business College in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he met his future “Bride.”

He and Carmen married on December 31, 1966. Terry served in the Marine Corps Reserve for six years. While attending Phillips, he had a part-time evening job sorting checks at Fidelity Bank in Lynchburg, where he learned banking was of interest. He began his 40-year banking career in Richmond in 1970 at Metropolitan National Bank, which later became Dominion Bank. He continued at Regency Bank, Hanover Bank and retired in 2009 from Bank of Essex (now Essex Bank) as Senior Vice VAUGHAN

During this time, he attended the American Institute of Banking, Retail Banking School and Virginia Banker’s School of Bank Management at University of Virginia. He was a member of the Eastgate Lions Club, Mechanicsville Ruritan Club, Secretary/ Treasurer of Mechanicsville Businessmen, Hanover Business Association and past President of the American Institute of Banking. He served on the Board of Directors for Investors Title Insurance Company. Terry and Carmen enjoyed traveling and went on numerous bus trips and cruises, both before

and after retirement. His favorite were trips to Myrtle Beach, ensuring he ate at Hamburger Joe’s several times each trip. He enjoyed Major League Baseball, NASCAR and was an avid Redskins fan.

Last but not least, he loved John Wayne and Hallmark movies. His most favorite hobby was dining out and he really enjoyed when the waitresses knew exactly what he wanted to eat and had his glass of Chardonnay ready for him! He was “Uncle Terry” to many and godfather to James and Joshua Hemenway. Terry was a devoted husband and loved his family. He cherished his many dedicated friends.

The family wishes to express deep gratitude to Dr. Banks Turner and staff, St. Mary’s CCU and Ultra Sound Teams, Sheltering Arms Hospital and Home Health Teams, Physical Therapy Solutions Staff, Bon Secours Liver Institute of Richmond and Covenant Woods Health Care Staff. Local resident brings memories of NYC to life through her art Staff Report news@mechlocal.com RICHMOND – Mechanicsville resident Helen Ruiz has a series of acrylic on canvas paintings on display in the second floor gallery of the Richmond Public Library at 101 East Franklin St. in Richmond.

The New York City native said, “Each one of us has a place which brings back good memories and feelings of connection and comfort. Home is culture, objects, buildings you’ve lived in, friends, family, fun, games and even where your heart ached for the first time, where you fell in love and out of love for the first time, your first friend, your first fight, your first everything; where you laughed, cried, worried, and felt powerful and determined as well as where you first felt powerless and confused.�

She recalled that “memory of double-dutch and that jump rope made out of anything you can find like old Venetian blind cords or an old rope you found in the trash, it’s

the stick and the ball, it’s hopscotch, it’s a game we called skullies where we used old soda caps to play, it’s the fire hydrant which was the urban public pool to cool off on hot summer days, it’s the people peering from their windows watching over us, it’s the sound of the mister softee ice cream truck and its tune that made your mouth water for your favorite ice cream treat and it’s a reminder of how naturally we shared our ice cream with the other kids and they shared with us if any of us didn’t have a quarter.�

The NYC experience for her also included: “The fire escape was where your mom put a small hibachi grill and we had a family ‘barbeque’ and if it was a very hot day you can sit on the fire escape and get some fresh air and maybe even a cool breeze.� “Home, my home, NYC is a city of diversity, a city of many different people from all around the world all packed into a small space. It is where we all become one as we lived side by side. It is where we grew up together and respect-

ed each others’ differences and where one another’s differences enhanced each of us as human beings with an ability to adapt to differences and embrace those differences.

Home is where we remember being brought up. Home is a huge part of what has molded us and remained in our spirit no matter where else we may have relocated.

Home is where we feel a special connection to something.

Home is like an old huge tree with large, long, thick and very deep roots.�

Ruiz said the paintings were done from her imagination and the memories of growing up in NYC, which she says is “my home, always my home and although I have relocated many times, it remains the place where I can truly call ‘home. It is where my memories of being creative enough to participate on a daily basis with other kids in order to create a playground within a concrete and a very cluttered compact space. All this has been influential in my artistic creativity and in my imagination. It is a part of

ward with a united Hanover where all are celebrated and where we can celebrate as the Declaration of Independence says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal . . .” We want to create a NEW Hanover legacy of justice and equality for all.

And yet, we witness a Ku Klux Klan rally staged to gain membership in front of OUR Hanover Courthouse. Why would they feel comfortable enough to come to Hanover to do this? Would it have anything to do with the “rumble in the jungle” of the 97th District of the Republican Party where the man who stood up to help those of lesser means in his district was tossed out of office and replaced with a commander of one of the six local Confederate groups in Hanover?

Were they aware of the tossing off the board of Earl Hunter Jr., an AfricanAmerican with no reason for his dismissal and said that is our kind of town.

Even more recently, they witnessed the dismissal of Marla Coleman who made one mistake in their estimation -- she voted for a change in the names of the Confederate

Perhaps they followed the story of the tossing of Dr. Kevin Washington and his wife from a “town hall” meeting of the NRA and the GOP. They were the only two people of color in attendance as Dr. Washington went to become informed on the NRA stance in his bid for the seat in the 97th District.

Dr. Washington wants to represent all citizens. Would it have to do with well-qualified candidates of color continually applying for a seat on the Hanover County School Board and not being appointed?

Most recently, one of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors members admitted Rev. Scott Bray had great qualifications as candidate, but how many times, how many years have we heard that?

Nah, we can’t put you here but look, we’ll give you this instead.

Rev. Bray, it was reported, was assured he’d get another appointment soon. Would it have to do with the overwhelming support they see of our board of supervisors as they refuse to do anything to change the names of the two schools in Hanover County that still carry the names of the losing generals of the Civil

Throughout the country there are less than 100 schools that still carry the name of Confederate generals, they are mostly in the Deep South.

Virginia has started moving toward being a state for all people and now has only 13 schools still carrying the names of the Confederate generals.

Yet, Hanover, in its infinite wisdom, has the distinction of having two schools still named after these generals. The board of supervisors would have you believe they left the decision up to the citizens of Hanover.

They knew the result before the vote because of the reputation Hanover has.

They know the percentage of minorities in Hanover and knew they could depend on the people of Hanover not taking into consideration the feelings of minorities as they decided to stick with their legacy -- a legacy of schools honoring the losers of the Confederate war.

WHY? They could dismantle this controversial issue and bring Hanover together as a place for ALL people with one positive decision. CHANGE THE SCHOOL NAMES. Get us off the news cycle on TV and in the newspapers, where we are reported to continue

Hanover wonders why they have a hard time getting teachers/administrators of color in our schools. It is hard to find a person of color willing to put up with what they know they will face in schools that profess their legacy so blatantly.

When will this board of supervisors decide to do the right thing for ALL people? If they can’t make that decision, it is time for the good people of Hanover to decide we need new blood, a board that sees clearly the future and not the past.

We need to vote to have an elected school board -- a school board that represents all of the people of Hanover County.

I don’t want my grandchildren living in a place where the KKK feels comfortable coming for the recruitment of new members. My family has been in Hanover County as long as any of the families of the board of supervisors.

Don’t we, the minority citizens, deserve some consideration? After all, we were on the right side of history.

Single-vehicle crash claims life of Ashland man Staff Report news@mechlocal.com AYLETT – A 31-yearold Ashland man was killed Tuesday, July 9, in a singlevehicle crash in the 700 block of Globe Road in Aylett.

Sgt. Keeli L. Hill, public information officer for Division 1 of the Virginia State Police, identified the victim as Charles Franklin Hogge.

According to Hill, the VSP responded to the scene around 8:24 p.m.

“Trooper D. Jackson's preliminary investigation reveals that a 2001 Dodge pickup, driven by, Charles F. Hogge, 31, of Ashland, Virginia, was traveling northbound on Globe Road when he lost control entering a curve, ran off

road right, partially flipping the vehicle, and struck several trees,” Hill said. Hogge was ejected from the vehicle.

Hill said that Hogge was not wearing his seat belt.

“Unfortunately, Hogge succumbed to his injuries at the scene. A 10-year-old male juvenile passenger was transported by ambulance to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries. A 14-year-old female passenger was transported by Med Flight for treatment of serious injuries,” the sergeant said. She also noted that the juveniles were not wearing their seat belts.

Speed is being considered a factor in the cause of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

Christina is completing her Master’s degree in elementary education at VCU and looks forward to teaching at the end of the year.

Ben works in woodworking and cabinetry in the Ashland area.

The couple spent an enjoyable honeymoon in Italy.

Post 175 claws way back into win column

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Mechanicsville Post 175 has typically been a juggernaut of American Legion baseball success, but the 2019 season began has brought a mass of disappointment.

After winning just one game the first week of the season, Post 175 lost a number of games – many in which it had led early. That streak changed July 9 when pitcher Gabe Lassiter gave the team a strong start and reliever Landon Smith held on for a 5-2 win over visiting Colonial Heights Post 284.

Then came the Legion All-Star break, in which Mechanicsville’s Trey Karnes won the home run derby Friday night and the North of the River All Stars defeated the South team 11-9 Saturday in a game that ended when another Post 175 player, Hunter Beck, got a groundout with the tying run at the plate.

Finally, on Sunday, Mechanicsville faced a test against South Richmond Post 137. After blowing a 7-2 lead to let South Richmond tie the game in the top of the seventh inning, Post 175’s Orion Debres reached on an infield single, moved to second on a called balk, advanced to third on Noah Smith’s infield single, and scored on a passed ball to

Ryan Mabry gave Post 175 a strong start in that game, scattering seven hits and striking out three in six innings of work.

For both Lassiter and Mabry, it was their first start of the season.

“It’s obvious I don’t know much as a coach because I started Lassiter for the first time and he pitched great and I started Mabry for the first time and he pitched great,” joked Mechanicsville manager Ken Schrad. “When you give a kid the ball, you expect them to do

the job, and both did.”

Lassiter said the team worked on its attitude after a disastrous outing the week before.

“We were talking about how we needed to buy into the process and keep doing things and how it would eventually work

out and we’d put all the pieces together,” Lassiter said. “We had some games where we wouldn’t have pitching, but we would have hitting; or we wouldn’t have hitting, but we’d have some pitching.

“We finally just put all the pieces together.”

HENRICO – With music blaring from loudspeakers and the ping of metal bats echoing across Ken Moore Field at Douglas Freeman High School, Richmond-area American Legion posts held their inaugural Home Run Derby Friday night.

Post 175’s Trey Karnes and 137’s David Coppedge met in the final, with the top-seeded Karnes taking home the title. Karnes, now a rising sophomore at Hampden-Sydney, attended Lee-Davis, and Coppedge – who is committed to play at UVA – goes to Clover Hill.

Karnes said this was his first time competing in a home run derby.

Rockville seniors have fun in final home meet Dolphin Club teammates Matilde Quilici and Janey Ferry raced to the finish line in the 11-12 girls 50 breaststroke, Quilici prevailing by just .09 at 43.66 to Ferry’s 43.75.

The race was emblematic of the final push for swimmers to qualify for Champs, which begins July 27 at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center in Richmond.

By Rob Witham and Dave Lawrence Mechanicsville Local ROCKVILLE – It’s not every night where you look up during a Greater Richmond Aquatic League event and only find two young men, their legs wrapped in red tape, on the starting blocks.

But, with the attention of every swimmer, every attendee at Rockville’s pool Wednesday night suddenly fixated on lanes three and four, Rockville/ Dolphin Club head coach Aidan Fraser and teammate John Haney were ready for their senior tribute, as they readied for one more race in a pool they called home most of their lives.

The record shows both swimmers were disqualified, but that didn’t matter. For Fraser, it was a fitting end to a year which saw him ask to serve as head coach for the Racers, who endured a difficult season in 2018, and joined forces with The Dolphin Club, whose home is at the Weinstein Community Center, to help rejunvenate the program.

“John brought the red tape out of nowhere,” Fraser said of Haney, who brought the prop that even stood out more on “Superheroes Night” than any Caped Crusader or Wonder Woman. “It isn’t actually that hard to swim (with the tape), it feels really weird. My legs were too close together, too close for comfort.”

There was plenty of comfort on the evening’s scoreboard, as Rockville/Dolphin Club pulled away early for an 1,127.5 to 760.5 win over Pebble Creek.

Though it was a step back for the Piranhas after a victory last week over The Dominion Club, there was plenty of positive in the team’s performance per head coach Jordan Witherow.

For Fraser, who leaves next month for the University of Delaware to study chemical engineering, the night was a

fitting conclusion at a special place, and a chance to savor his role in helping the Racer program build and prepare for the future.

“The partnership with Dolphin Club was proposed at the end of last season,” Fraser explained. “We were fine with it. Whatever we can do to help out, and it’s going good so far.

Kids are making lots of new friends, and that’s my favorite thing, seeing my young kids having a great time with their new friends.”

Sometimes, friends make the best competitors. In a photo finish in, perhaps, the best race of the evening, Rockville/

Burkwood focuses on improvement MECHANICSVILLE – Burkwood’s Buccaneers outnumbered Wyndham in the two team’s meet at Burkwood Wednesday night, and the numerical advantage showed in the final scores.

But the Buccaneers, with just one meet to go before Champs, were focused more on individual progress. And the individual results showed the fruits of that focus.

“We had a lot of time drops,” said Burkwood head coach Karen Seeber.

Quite a few Burkwood swimmers have qualified for Champs. Others are close to making the cut, and Burkwood assistant coach Brendan Farrar explained what they do to help their swimmers close that gap.

“We’ve really been pushing it in practice and getting more individualized work on what they need,” he said. “We’ll pull them out. Other coaches will work with them to help them feel more confident in the meet.

Hopefully we’ll take what we learn tonight until Tuesday, which is our last meet, and have some more qualifiers.”

North All-Stars hold off South Davis Hewett, a coach at Post 125 and Benedictine, helped organize the All-Star weekend, which included an inaugural home run derby Friday night.

Hewett called the weekend a “revival” for the All-Star game, which hasn’t happened in years. He said it allows local players from different schools and travel teams an unusual opportunity to cross paths.

“You’ve got guys from all over the map in Richmond.

And they’ve built a bit of a rapport through this,” he said.

“They come out, they’re highfiving each other and enjoying the game of baseball. Which is really what it comes down to.”

Berringer and Robinson said they’d never played with most of their teammates.

Aside from breaking his bat on a groundout, Robinson said the game was a good opportunity to compete with and against some of Richmond’s best young talent. Robinson is home-schooled and commit-

ted to play at VCU. “It was just fun having the best kids around the Richmond area get to play together,” he said. “We had some jokes, it was a good time.”

The North grabbed an early lead with a six-run first inning, jump-started by Robinson’s first double. Ty Krantz of Great Bridge and J.R. Tucker graduate Colin Haywood singled in a pair of runs apiece later in the frame.

The South never regained the lead, but chipped away with runs in all but the third and sixth innings. David Coppedge’s two-run double in the fourth cut the North’s lead to 7-4. Coppedge is a rising senior at Clover Hill who has committed to play at UVA. Eventually, the South brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the top of the seventh. But North pitcher and Lee-Davis graduate Hunter Beck induced a groundout to end it.

Thanks to some encouragement from his mom Debbie Lunsford, he took the leap into the world of music. And now the 16-year-old from Mechanicsville is preparing to move to Texas to pursue his dream.

On Aug. 20, Abram and his mother will head to Dallas where he has been accepted to study — and hone his skills — with the Linda Septien Entertainment Group.

Debbie said she suggested Abram enter the Hanover Arts and Activities Centersponsored Idols competition because he “wants to get into this music thing, so let’s see TEEN, pg. 14 `

School district again expects full accreditation For the ninth consecutive year, Hanover County Public Schools will again receive 100 percent full accreditation.

According to Dale S. Theakston, communications specialist, the accreditation is determined based on the 200910 Standards of Learning assessments. Preliminary information from the Virginia Department of Education indicates the accreditation status.

Final accreditation reports are expected on Sept. 15.

County receives VACo honor Hanover County has been recognized by the Virginia Association of Counties as the recipient of the 2010 Achievement Award for the Dominion Resources Greentech Incubator.
