Megan was a member of the Atlee Marching Band, Beta Club, National Honor Society, and German National Honor Society.

In her community, she has been a member of the Girl Scouts and received the Gold Award Girl Scout. She served as a member of the Board of Directors her senior year.

She attends All Souls Episcopal Church, where she is a Youth Group member, Acolyte, and Sunday School assistant.

Megan has served as a volunteer counselor “Buddy� at St. Elizabeth’s camp, a camp for young adults with special needs.

She also is involved with Community Bible Study.

Standoff Sarah Via continues pursues seat on HCBOS in 97th

By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE -So far, no one is blinking in a continuing battle for the 97th District House of Delegates nomination following a 1st District Committee ruling earlier last week that upheld an appeal by challenger Scott Wyatt.

The 22-member panel upheld an appeal by Wyatt’s campaign, in effect legitimizing the May 4 Convention that declared the Cold Harbor District representative on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors the duly elected nominee, but incumbent Chris Peace’s camp is saying not so fast.

The Atlee High School Show Choir recently performed for senior citizens of Hanover and Henrico counties at Senior Helpers. Among those attending was Frances Wessells, 99, who founded the VCU and University of Richmond Dance Programs. She choreographed and taught dance as an assistant professor at VCU for many years. Barbara Wilkins, the owner of Senior Helpers, said, “We surprised her by bringing her to the show choir performance, announced from the stage that she was in the audience and gave her a big bouquet of flowers. Residents reminded it’s illegal to place signs in right-of-ways HANOVER – Residents are reminded that it is illegal to place signs within the Virginia Department of Transportation’s right-of-way and that violations of this law can result in fines.

The VDOT right-of-way typically includes median strips, utility poles, street signs and the area between the road and ditch line.

Hanover County actively enforces this state law throughout the county, and violators can be assessed a $100 fine per illegal sign.

Signs illegally placed on private property also are subject to civil penalties.

David Maloney, director of Planning, said his office continues to receive complaints about illegally placed signs over the years and has assessed a number of fines.

“A majority of these illegal signs are constructed of inexpensive materials and they remain within the public right-of-way or on private property and are neglected,” Maloney

added. “They are very unsightly and become a form of litter.”

He also said that signs within the public right-of-way present many nuisances and dangers to motorists.

“They become visual distractions to drivers and they can block sight lines, especially at intersections and driveways,” Maloney said.

“The county’s goals are to keep our county beautiful and achieve compliance with state sign laws,” Maloney added. “We do not have a goal of collecting fines, but we will do so where necessary to discourage businesses and individuals from posting illegal signs.”

In an effort to enforce the regulations, the zoning enforcement staff periodically performs sweeps of the county’s roads to remove illegally placed signs with the right-of-way, and notify see SIGNS, pg. 4

She said she lives and advocates conservative values and fiscal responsibility. “I believe in creating a more transparent local government and working

to provide the Cold Harbor District with access to broadband internet as it is now an essential utility for any school district in the 21st century.

I would also love to explore the idea of a park for families to enjoy. This could also help alleviate the hazards faced by runners and cyclists who risk their lives on our shoulder-less roads,� Via said.

Crazy thoughts come to mind at night

EDA appointment questioned based on his residence

D

o you ever have one of those nights when -- regardless of how tired you are -- you just can’t get to sleep. Yes, I’ve read the reports about insomnia with aging. But, I love to sleep.

When I babysat friends’ children years ago, I would tell them “You’ll wished you had taken this nap when you get older.” Considering most were lucky to have reached the rolling over stage, I’m confident they didn’t take my advice.

So, on those rare occasions when sleep eludes me, the commentary going on in my head is either too in-depth or just silly.

Among the “conversations” taking place are: Why do people count sheep? Why would that make someone sleepy? Never tried it.

I wish I had the wit and sense of humor of Jerry Seinfeld with his hilarious observations.

My attempts -- keep in mind, only shared with me -- fall flat.

Now here’s a biggie: Did the United States really put men on the moon? I have some conspiracy theorist friends who are convinced the whole landing was filmed on a movie or TV stage in Burbank, California.

My parents didn’t give me an option the night of July 20, 1969. I was five days shy of becoming a teenager and watching astronauts walk on the moon didn’t excite me. But I remember it like it was yesterday on that black and white TV in the living room.

Why do some people prefer cats over dogs? What can a cat do to be considered a pet?

I know cursive and shorthand -- can I take notes in an unknown “language”?

How hands-on are students in a classroom with apps on iPhones that can aid in course work? There was no such thing as a calculator way back when. But we did have an abacus (if you don’t know what it is, as my parents said to me, “Look it up.” That meant an encyclopedia or dictionary).

What kind of world are we leaving for younger generations? I worry about the future of my great-nephews and great-nieces. Whether you believe in climate change is your decision, but there’s definitely something taking place with glaciers melting, snow falling in areas that never had it before, insane flooding, and heat and cold in unusual locales.

Overall, writing this has been therapeutic.

Although I still don't know how some topics even come to mind.

With that, I'll say "Sweet dreams."

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist When I got my first job as a photographer, I quickly learned that I was a member of a strange brew of collective souls, a sort of band of brothers who sometimes didn’t play well together.

I also quickly realized that shoot-

ing sports, especially football, in low light conditions with film that had not yet progressed to a high enough ASA to acomodate those elements was no easy task and required a different set of skills from those necessary for news assignments.

As luck would have it, all the help I needed lived three doors down,

a lifetime resident of a sleepy little street near Willow Lawn. Wilton and Eleanor Tenney’s home was always a hub of activity that usually involved students from Patrick Henry High School. Eleanor Tenney taught at the school for decades and established a reputation as a teacher who lived for her students and taught long after the

final bell ended in Ashland.

On Dec. 12, 2018, Angela KellyWiecek, Chickahominy District representative on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, appointed Mark Creery to the county’s Economic Development Authority (EDA). His four-year term runs to 2022.

The EDA is responsible for encouraging businesses to expand or locate in Hanover County and has broad power to acquire, own, lease, and dispose of properties to promote industry and develop trade. Its activities involve non-public decisions and confidential negotiations.

Angela’s appointment insults her constituents.

Creery does not reside or vote in Hanover County. His home is a fifth floor $576,000 luxury condo at Rocketts Landing in Henrico County, near the City of Richmond line, with views of the downtown and the James River.

A spokesman for Hanover he’s not. Welcome to Angela’s world where Hanover’s economic development will be decided in secret by a Rocketts Landing resident.

Angela’s EDA appointment also is politically compromising and highly problematic.

Listing the Rocketts Landing address, Angela reported a $500 campaign contribution from Creery on Jan. 2, 2019. Imagine an exclusive gathering at Mark’s luxury condo or elsewhere where understandings are reached on Hanover’s place within the Richmond region -- with checks as holiday gifts.

Mark has a four-year EDA appointment. Angela has his money.

Bridge named in recognition of fallen firefighter Brad Clark of the accident. Clark died at the scene and other firefighters were seriously injured. In his last moments, Clark warned his fellow firefighters of the impending crash, giving them just enough warning to save their lives.

In February, Clark was honored with the 2019 Ray Downey Courage and Valor Award, named after a New York City firefighter who died in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. His widow, Melanie Clark, received the award in April on his behalf.

Also in February, Northam recognized Clark as Virginia Career Firefighter of the Year for 2018. “Many will forever be grateful for his leadership and valor to the very end,� said the governor. “However, Lt. MECHANICSVILLE -The Pole Green Road Bridge over Interstate 295 has been named after Hanover County firefighter Lt. Brad Clark, who was killed in October when he was struck by a tractor-trailer while responding to a traffic accident near that spot.

The bridge is now named the Lieutenant Bradford T. Clark, Hanover Fire-EMS Memorial Bridge.

Clark’s tragic death resulted in the General Assembly strengthening Virginia’s MoveOver Law, which requires drivers to move over as they approach stationary vehicles with flashing emergency lights.

A first offense will now be a Class I misdemeanor rather than a traffic infraction. Gov. Ralph Northam signed the bill into law on May 2 during a ceremony in the historic Hanover Courthouse.

Yes, we need change in our

district and in all of Hanover County. I’ve lived in different areas of the county since the 1980s. Since 2008, things have only gotten worse despite what some continue to preach and say is not true fact – depends on what part of the county you may live and how you are treated.

Something that needs to be addressed for the better of the people is the want to be leaders and represent us only to step away from real issues.

We need someone to “man-up” and truly care and represent all Hanoverians.

I know no one wants to hear the negative but they’ve been shoved under the rug far too long by different committees that are supposed to represent all the people and starts in our own backyard.

One community decided to pave the site (what they call amenities), however, before the process they decided to cut costs, scaling back the parking area 3 to 4 feet. So, instead of having vehicles behind the standard boundary line, your

vehicle is now forced to the road’s edge. Their plan would work if you had a Fiat or a Volkwagen Beetle.

How would you feel if your mother or grandmother with a handicap decal was towed – two days before Christmas in the idle of the night only to wake up to find that vehicle gone?

The claim was that the tire was off the pavement; this was done only to senior citizens, when others who truly were out of their bounds and break laws can do whatever.

We reached out to David Maloney, director of Planning and Zoning. We even sent photos – only to be ignored as standard law public and private areas are to provide handicap parking to extend the roadway behind the boundary line as it should be to keep vehicles out of the street.

The land owners’ excuse is that they had to pay over $3,000 to repair broken lines, repairs were done -- before any paving and damage were in the main road not where residents park. They did eventually add a few signs. They continue to threaten residents. If your vehicle is off the pavement, you are subject to towing. Yes, selected residents were even evicted for that reason.

We don’t have the option

of calling police if a problem occurs unless we are dead or dying – especially during certain times – they are too busy.

Just one example why we need Col. David R. Hines out he does not represent all Hanoverians. He and his force have a closed mind.

“See only what they choose to look for.” Sheriff Hines does not represent us. The rule we’re forced to live by is keep a low profile and keep quiet.

What were you thinking – paving was done on Route 1 at Sliding Hill and Cedar Lane.

It took over a year of multiple accidents, backups and in the end a poor job done. That only created more aggressive drivers.

Now they’re opening a hotel behind the Taco Bell at Sliding Hill, which is/was another bad decision by the Planning Commission and others.

This will be a welcome to drug and other trafficking, but, like so much going on in the county, don’t be surprised you won’t hear about it. It will be kept quiet – that’ what they do.

Now with the addition of Chickahominy Falls and Rivers Mill just over the bridge in Henrico, it’s only going to add more congestion and accidents to the area. It’s a poor decision – not one thought

It was with no surprise to me to read in your May 22 edition the Angela Kelly-Wiecek will be running for another term.

Like politicians at all levels, she touted all the great things she claims to have done for us the Chickahominy district residents.

I have lived in Kingswood Court subdivision since early 1983. My wife and I raised two sons here and watched them both eventually graduate Atlee High School and go off to college.

I still remember former Supervisor George Feldman coming to my door to ask me to vote for him. I guess the idea of knocking on the doors

Since Feldman, I have seen the once beautiful Atlee Station Road go from farmland with two subdivisions on it to a seemingly endless line of newer ones with home prices so high I don’t know how people buy them. I had no idea the area had so many millionaires.

Kelly-Wiecek has continued this practice of “I never met a developer I didn’t like.”

Just read about how the board trampled on the RV dealer’s request to place a sign along I-95 so they could placate the developer of the Bass Pro area project.

Also, how about the fairly new project down from Atlee High School named “The Bridge Nobody Asked For.” I personally am sick KellyWiecek’s stewardship and can only pray someone will rise up to oppose her and provide us with honest common sense representation.

When you view this alongside Scott Wyatt having his campaign vs. Chris Peace funded by by Sen. Tommy Norment, R-3, of the Virginia General Assembly, Hanover politics is getting slimy. I won’t be voting for Wyatt or Kelly-Wiecek .

Incumbents and newcomers seek seats on school board

By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local HANOVER -- Four candidates, including incumbent Marla Coleman, placed their names in nomination for the soon-to-be open Henry District seat on the Hanover County School Board at last Wednesday’s meeting of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors.

New candidates for COLEMAN the position include Paul Sutton, Jesper Lorentzen and Elwood Sanders.

In addition, two people will be considered for the Beaverdam seat on the school board, including incumbent John Axselle and Rev. Scott Bray. Coleman, a former guidance counselor and SANDERS career education admin-

istrator, is completing her first term of service on the board, and expressed her desire to continue in that role. She cited a productive working relationship with Henry District supervisor Sean Davis and her willingness to address and solve LORENTZEN problems as factors in her decision to seek another four-year term.

“I’ve always been focused on service to youth and service toward my community,” Coleman said. “I feel it in my heart. I am pleased with the progress we have made.”

Justin will make a great house dog based on his previous home situation. George, 550045, is a 2-year-old male feline. He has had his first set of vaccines given and is FELV/FIV test negative. George is a nice, laid-back kind of cat. He loves to sit around and lounge. He also is very observant. George came to the shelter having mostly been an outdoor cat. However, he has adjusted to his indoor living environment very well. George is well litter-trained. He might do best as an only cat. He also can live as an indoor/outdoor pet. Moritz said.

She is being challenged by local attorney Elwood Earl “Sandy� Sanders, who expressed a desire to be involved in the school policy process. “It’s an awesome responsibility to even be considered for something like this,� Sanders, the father of three, said. “I’ve always been interested in what’s going on. I believe there is much that is good in Hanover schools. We want to keep the good and avoid the bad.�

Sanders described himself as a “change the world� type person, and said he writes a blog for a conservative website.

Also seeking the seat is veterinarian Jesper Lorentzen, the father of four daughters who figures to be involved in Hanover schools “for the next 17 years.

After considering a busy schedule, Lorentzen said he decided that the time to serve is now -even with the challenges. “I want to make a difference for my children, not my grandchildren,� he said after the meeting. “For many of us the time to serve is when we get older and have a little more time on our hands. I want to make a difference for my children now.�

Lorentzen told the supervisors that he and his wife chose Hanover County because of its excellent schools and expressed a desire to be part of that process. “We have some of the best schools and I want to keep it that way. Actually, I want to make it better,� he concluded.

George Sutton could not attend the meeting due to illness, but Pastor Ed Vinson presented his name for consideration. “I have known Mr. Sutton for eight years and have found him to be a man of character and integrity,� Vinson said. “He’s fair and impartial and listens to all points of view with empathy. He respects all people.�

Long time Beaverdam school board representative John Axselle said he wants to be reappointed so the system continues on a path toward excellence for the students it serves. “I want to provide the best learning experience we can for the children of Hanover,� Axselle said. “I look forward to continuing to serve . . . and, hopefully, provide an even better education for the children of Hanover County.�

Robert Barnett nominated Rev. Scott Bray, pastor of Springfield Baptist Church, for the Beaverdam seat. Bray did not attend the meeting but Barnett relayed the pastor’s thoughts on serving the students of Hanover County.

Resident: correct data at issue in race As a voter, I’m excited that this year we have choices when it comes to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors (HCBOS). I know it is not a small decision to open oneself and one’s family up to running for an elected office.

I’d like to thank everyone who has been willing to run. I think choice opens discussion, which makes our government stronger.

In the Chickahominy District, I received a door hanger at my home from Tom Walsh. I appreciated learning about his platform, and readily decided that he has many facts incorrect and has not done his

A couple of days passed before he invited me to shoot a football game at PHHS and I accepted without hesitation.

That perfect fall evening outside Ashland is clear in my mind for two reasons. It’s when I first began to understand the challenges, and felt comfortable on the sideline thanks to Wilton’s tutelage.

It’s also the first time I met Nick Liberante, another disciple of Mr. Tenney, who was on the sideline shooting the game.

Wilton joked that he felt especially safe on this night because he was surrounded

by Italians, and he watched as Nick and I scurried up and down the sidelines following his instructions to the letter.

He seemed like a proud father watching his sons take over the family business.

In the years that followed, Nick and I found ourselves side-by-side on many eve-

homework on understanding what a seat on the BOS can and cannot do.

First, when the vote to remove proffers was passed 4-3, Angela Kelly-Wiecek was among the three dissenters – voting to keep proffers.

Of the four members voting for removal two remain on the BOS; Peterson, the architect, in Mechanicsville, and Davis, the real estate agent, in Henry.

Proffers are voluntary and cannot be required as a matter of county policy.

Leaders in Hanover run a tight, fiscally-conservative ship. Our current tax rate of 0.81/100 = is the lowest in

the Greater Richmond area: Caroline = 0.83; Chesterfield = 0.96; City of Richmond =1.20; Henrico = 0.87 (2017 tax.virginia.gov). Hanover puts forth a balanced budget every year and then typically underspends. Walsh’s material says “cut government waste and unnecessary expenses” without any indication what these may be.

Walsh’s material indicated that home assessments have increased by 27.8% - true; but county staff in the Assessor’s Office control the assessment and reassessment processes, which are all based on the current property market.

Assessments are not in the purview of elected BOS seats.

The increase property assessments also are a correction from the recession of 2008. My hope is that this correction in recent years has all of my neighbors who had

Over those years I learned from Nick’s energy and dedication and his boundless enthusiasm for life in general.

He approached his photography similar to the fashion he approached life, realistically and filled with hope.

After Wilton and Eleanor passed, Nick became the unofficial trustee of their memory, keeping their names prominent in PHHS history and preserving those precious photos.

Both of us expressed frustration at not being able to fully explain just how much Wilton had done for us, both as pho-

tographers and men. He set examples on both counts that were high marks of aspiration for both of us.

I thought about those conversations with Nick as I sat in St. Anne’s Catholic Church and stared at a coffin that contained his body, but not the soul of a man.

I realized that Nick’s message is one of life as I saw the outpouring of love from friends and family who came to say their tearful goodbyes.

I couldn’t help but remember a conversation I had with Nick as we carried Wilton’s coffin to his final resting place on a snowy winter day years ago.

“Many people will never know how much he meant to so many people,” Nick said.

“We will,” I replied.

Now, plenty of people will miss and remember Nick for years to come. He became a beloved member of his community and never failed to support numerous projects,

Communications Officers Katie Sprouse and Jude Dawson tied for and received the eighth annual Heins “Dedication to Duty” award for receiving the highest number of peer recognition cards for 2018. This award is named for retired Director Phil Heins, who was present for the award.

Nestled on five acres, Hanover Humane's facility has a full-service Boarding and Grooming Kennel with a play yard and wooded walking trails.

Presentations and camp activities will be conducted both indoors and outdoors, weather permitting.

Justin Smith honored for actions during Fire-EMS tragedy HANOVER -- Justin Smith of Hanover County Emergency Communications has been recognized by the Virginia Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) for Outstanding Individual Performance during a critical incident.

Smith was honored for his actions while working the Fire-EMS Radio on the night of Oct. 11, 2018, when Hanover firefighter Lt. Brad Clark was killed and three other Hanover firefighters were critically injured.

Jada Lee, awards chairman, praised Smith for rising to the occasion when his department experienced this line of duty tragedy.

Rashkind and his wife, Suzette, are extraordinarily philanthropic and are recognized among of the college’s most generous donors as members of the Presidents Society and Heritage Society.

In 1989, the Rashkind Family Foundation estab-

lished the Rashkind Faculty Development Fund to reward the efforts of tenured faculty during sabbatical leaves and promote research and advanced study by tenuretrack faculty. This initiative was spearheaded by Alan’s mother, Eleanor, and father, Julian, who himself served for 12 years as a Trustee of the college.

To date, the fund has generated nearly $1 million in faculty grants to over 100 recipients.

The Rashkind Fund also is generously supported

by Alan’s brother, Michael Rashkind, 19 71; his son, Graham Rashkind, 1996; and

daughter-in-law, Cameron Morgan Rashkind, 1994; and his son, Doug.

Dr. Reynolds will receive an Honorary Doctor of Humanities Degree, based on a recommendation of the college's Joint Trustee-Faculty Committee and approval of the Board of Trustees, He has been a longtime, active, and effective volunteer on behalf of his alma mater.

For nearly a decade, he was on the college's Society of Alumni Board. He also served as the President of R-MC's Boydton Society, leading this significant group of alumni who attended Randolph-Macon 50 or more years ago.

In recognition of Dr. Reynolds' important service to the college, he has received the Society of Alumni's Distinguished Service Award.

He and his late wife, Jan, received the prestigious Sydney Algernon Sullivan and Mary Mildred Sullivan Awards, respectively, in 2012.

The Sullivan awards are given to individuals who serve others in an extraordinary and humble way.

Dr. Reynolds is a generous supporter of a wide range of R-MC's programs and initiatives, including the college's career program, The EDGE. As a result of his philanthropy, he is a member

of the Presidents Society and Heritage Society.

In 2008, he established the Arthur McKinley Reynolds Lecture Series in memory of his mother and father, Arthur McK. Reynolds Sr., a member of R-MC Class of 1925.

The Reynolds Lecture Series provides an important contribution to the College community as well as the greater Ashland and Richmond areas by sponsoring national figures to speak on issues of current events.

ity to rule on the appeal since the 97th Legislative District Committee has not considered the appeal.

Reactions to the decision were predictable with Wyatt's camp claiming victory and the Peace campaign issuing a statement saying the panel's actions were not proper.

Peace contends the appeal was not resolved by the 97th District Legislative District Committee, and therefore was improperly heard by the 1st District Committee, citing provisions in the Republican Party Plan.

In a statement released on Facebook, the Peace campaign said "The Wyatt rally or fake convention remains without effect as the Wyatt appeal continues before the 97th Legislative District Committee where according to party rules it must be voted on before it can be appealed to the 1st congressional district committee.

Any action taken tonight on the Wyatt appeal has no effect on the June 1st Firehouse primary."

The LDC voted Saturday, May 18, to consider Wyatt's appeal on June 5.

Conversely, the Wyatt campaign is viewing the committee's decision as a victory and claiming the decision as affirmation of Wyatt's nomination secured at the May 4 convention.

A post on their campaign site shortly after the Monday ruling read; "Good News! The 1st District Committee upheld the May 4th Convention was valid and Scott Wyatt is the Republican nominee!! On to November. Join our campaign to put a SOLID conservative in the House."

The Peace campaign position was bolstered by a statement by John Findley, Republican Party of Virginia (RPV) executive director, who endorsed Peace’s posi-

tion alleging the 1st District Committee had acted improperly and stating the June 1 Firehouse Primary will determine the nominee.

Less than 24 hours after the District ruling, RPV general counsel Chris Marston issued a letter to a member of that board clarifying when an appeal could be heard by the 1st District Committee.

In his letter, Marston outlined two instances where the body could hear an appeal like the one presented by the Wyatt campaign.

The body could act on an appeal once the LDC has disposed of or acted upon a matter -- or if the LDC took no action within 30 days of a filed appeal like Wyatt’s, which is dated May 9.

The Peace campaign interpreted that opinion as evidence the 1st District Committee acted improperly when hearing the appeal last week.

“This improper action would be like someone skipping District Court for a traffic violation and attempting to be heard in Circuit first to catch a break when the lower level judge may not rule in their favor,” Peace said in a Facebook post. “The Wyatt attempt to end-run process and the party plan is improper and cannot legally be done.”

The Wyatt camp sees the RPV general counsel ruling differently, and posts on his website claimed the opinion affirmed the 1st District’s decision.

“Nothing scares Chris Peace more than the RPV Party Plan and Robert's Rules of Order,” Wyatt said in a Facebook post.

“Today, RPV General Counsel ruled in OUR favor regarding the 1st District Committee Meeting on May 20, 2019. During this meeting, it was decided that the Party Canvass for June 1st was ‘out of order’ and the Convention was upheld.”

Before the appeal could be heard, committee members moved to schedule the hearing for June 5 in order to gather more information surrounding the allegations. Wyatt appealed that decision to the 1st Congressional District

The post continued, “However, it is obvious, facts and rules will not stop Chris Peace from misleading voters. Instead of conceding and working to unite the party, Peace is now trying to further confuse voters to suit his own ends.”

Peace described the Wyatt’s campaign efforts to interpret the ruling saying, “Nothing scares Scott Wyatt more than a real election decided by the voters.”

“Based on this improper action Wyatt's supporters have once again bombarded the internet with fake news that he is the official Republican nominee. This report is totally false and borders on intentional voter suppression and manipulation.”

Peace said the ruling by RPV’s general counsel is clear and definitive.

“The Republican Party of Virginia issued a General Counsel Ruling yesterday that

confirms our position that the 1st District was out of order.

The 1st District must wait until after the LDC finalizes their process on June 5th to legitimately take up his appeal.”

Peace’s camp continues a beefed-up attempt to contact and inform voters of the upcoming canvass.

“My team is actively connecting with voters via doors, live phone calls, and mail to ensure a decisive victory on June 1st at the Firehouse Primary and put an end to this incessant attempt to limit voter participation and rig the nomination for Wyatt,” Peace said.

Jeffrey Adams, an attorney associated with the Wyatt campaign, outlined the complaints contained in the appeal to the 22-member committee who met last week in Stafford.

Adams’ arguments were focused on the fact that mass meetings were held throughout the 97th District to select delegates to the convention,

and attempts made by the Legislative District Committee to cancel the convention were out of order.

Adams contended that Peace supporters on the LDC attempted to change the process after initial delegate counts indicated a Wyatt victory.

Adams also questioned the legitimacy of the 97th LDC’s decision to cancel the convention and said that motion was made after the chair had adjourned the meeting.

Mike Wade, representing the Peace campaign, argued in favor of overruling the appeal and certifying a June 1 canvass.

Wade contended that LDC chairman Thomas Miller had no authority to move the convention from Hanover High School to Atlee High School, stating the convention was cancelled long before it was gaveled to order.

Wade said Miller provided no details regarding the funding or insurance arrangements regarding the upcoming convention.

He also confirmed a motion was passed at the May 18 LDC meeting, setting June 5 as the hearing date for Wyatt’s appeal.

King William LDC representative John Hubbard said the scheduling was not an attempt to delay a decision but rather an effort to gather all the pertinent facts surrounding the appeal, including transcripts of the meetings in question.

But, New Kent LDC representative Mark Daniel clearly perceived the move as an attempt to delay the process so reasonable time for appeals would be impossible and described the move as an effort to not hear the appeal at all.

Members of the 1st District Committee heard those arguments and decided they did have the authority to hear the appeal.

Complicating the process is an ongoing effort to remove Hanover Republican Committee chair Dale Taylor, who has the sole right of appointing members to the LDC. A meeting is scheduled for today (Wednesday, May 29) to consider that action, and its outcome could affect changes on the LDC. And there are other elements at play in the quickly evolving controversy, including an effort by 97th District LDC members to oust their chairman, Thomas Miller.

The back and forth continued throughout the week with each side solidifying its stated positions.

Late last week, 1st Congressional District chair Bob Watson issued a letter reiterating the committee’s ruling and affirming its conclusion that the upcoming Firehouse Primary is “null and void.�

Wyatt’s supporters viewed that ruling as reinforcement of their belief that the Hanover supervisor is the nominee and the appeal was duly heard and decided.

Peace dismissed the letter in an email late last week. “I don’t see his letter as any more authoritative in this process as the purported actions of his committee which were ruled out of order by the General Counsel,� Peace said.

“This animal adapts very well around humans, and has been seen all over the Richmond Metro area. They have been seen and heard in Hanover, so I want to know how many we have. My early guess is that we have as many as 500, but this study will determine a more defensible number. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries estimates we have 50,000 in the entire state,” Groover added.

Groover has over 20 college and graduate students assisting in the Hanover Study, representing Virginia Commonwealth University, Liberty University, and George Mason University. “This will give those students some great real experience in outdoors and doing ecology research.”

Richard Groover has a PhD in Environmental Science and Public Policy, and is the author of The Environmental Almanac of Virginia, 2nd edition. He also is a Fellow in the Virginia Academy of Science.

the metro area growing, the low crime, low property tax rate, and fabulous schools in Hanover County are a draw.

If new dwellings are not created, home prices will increase, driving assessments to increase further.

Walsh stated that cutting off the building of new dwellings would lead to “student attrition” and solving “crowded schools”, implying reduced class sizes.

This pre-supposes that our schools are all overcrowded, as well as that once youth ageout of our K-12 public schools, those adults will remain in their

not allowing property assessments to increase, not building new dwellings, and decreasing class sizes are empty, impossible promises.

What I have seen of KellyWiecek is that she is knowledgeable about her role on the BOS. She is supportive of the needs within our schools, which includes spending.

We’re in the middle of increasing technology, as well as addressing 10 school campuses over 50 years in age.

When she hears about concerned conversations -- be that building developments, class sizes or road projects -- she holds town hall meetings so that her constituents

homes living as adults without school-aged youth.

However, all of our schools are not over 100% of capacity, and the policy that would trigger redistricting to solve overcrowding has not been needed. Having been a proponent of smaller class sizes for many years, I find his attrition logic flimsy, knowing that many families move to Hanover specifically because of the quality of our public schools and “empty-nesters” often quickly “downsize”.

If an elected official truly wants to impact class sizes, then they need to increase the number of teachers, which has budget impact. To run on a platform of not raising taxes, 8 PM

The top seed once again, the Hawks took the field for their Thursday night quarterfinal against No. 8 Eastern View having not played a game in 13 days, and, after starting 16-0, having lost their last two games.

First was a 10-inning defeat to eventual Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) state champion Benedictine, the other, their first loss at Lee-Davis in years.

So, how do you erase the memories, keep the players fresh, and look ahead?

Head coach Tyler Kane decided to utilize the team’s “Blue/Gray World Series”, normally held in the fall, holding a special best-of-three intrasquad event to simulate live action, after a game versus Jamestown scheduled for May 17 was canceled by the Eagles.

“We got guys on the mound, figured out some things offensively, and continued moving forward as a team. It was really positive,” Kane noted. “For pitchers, you can throw bullpen after bullpen, but nothing simulates that game-like environment.”

The work helped, especially on the mound, as Eric Anderson scattered two hits and three walks over five innings and Chase Hustead fanned four in the final two innings for the save as Hanover shut out the Cyclones 3-0.

Randolph-Macon had a short stay in the NCAA Division III softball World Series in Tyler, Texas, but the Yellow Jackets have nothing to be ashamed of after being eliminated following losses to Emory Thursday and Illinois Wesleyan Friday.

The Yellow Jackets fell two runs short in each game, losing to No. 18 Emory 7-5 and to No. 7 Illinois Wesleyan 5-3, but they had a benchmark season after winning their first NCAA super regional and reaching the College World Series for the first time in program history.

Randolph-Macon was not overpowered by either team – a play here or there in each game could have flipped the result.

“There’s a certain level of disappointment because we went down there and went 0-2, but I couldn’t be prouder of our kids,” said Randolph-Macon head coach Kevin Proffitt. “I’m pretty sure we were the only

first-timers, but, you know, we did not play scared. We didn’t play like we were not sure we belonged.”

An error – RandolphMacon’s only error of the game – triggered a three-run comeback by Emory in the sixth inning that unraveled what had been a Yellow Jacket lead.

Randolph-Macon had gotten off to a strong start with four runs in the first inning of that game, but could not get any more runs across after the third inning despite an 11-hit performance.

Another error – likewise, Randolph-Macon’s only error of the game – led to an unearned run in a three-run first inning

by Illinois Wesleyan in the Yellow Jackets’ second game in the World Series.

While the errors hurt, they are not what should stand out in anyone’s memories. The fact is that Emory had two errors and Illinois Wesleyan one.

Randolph-Macon nearly matched Emory in hits – 11 to 14 – and did match Illinois Wesleyan in that department (both teams finished with nine apiece). Emory had more extra-base hits than the Yellow Jackets – Cassie Baca had a home run and Sami Feller had a double – but Randolph Macon had three doubles (by Kerstin Roth, Ali Celiberti and see R-MC, pg. 29

Hanover hammers Midlothian in 12-0 rout

By Rob Witham For the Times-Dispatch MECHANICSVILLE – In the huddle before Thursday’s Region 4B softball quarterfinal, Ellen Palya, Hanover’s starting pitcher and one of only two seniors on the squad, imparted some sage advice.

“I told them, at this point in the season, it doesn’t even matter who’s more talented,” Palya recalled. “Softball is a game that anybody can win any day. It doesn’t matter who you’re playing, at this point, you just have to want it more.”

With precision in all phases, the top-seeded Hawks scored four runs in the third, added seven in the fifth as its offense returned to its powerful production from earlier in the season to eliminate eighth-seeded Midlothian 12-0.

Hanover (17-2) hosted Powhatan, which defeated Caroline, in Tuesday’s region semifinal – which took place after this edition went to press – with a trip to the Class 4 state tournament on the line. The Hawks bested the Indians 6-4 on March 22.

Having waited 10 days to return to live action, Hanover head coach Michael Rohr quietly emphasized adjustments needed to rejuvenate an offense that averaged more than eight runs per game in their first 14 contests, but only 10 runs total in their last four, where they went 2-2.

“We got into a lull near the end of the season,” Rohr said.

“I thought the kids did a really good job the past week and a half buckling down, working on swings and concentrating on their approaches at the plate.”

Palya, as any pitcher would, appreciates the run support, but believes it can start sooner.

“At the beginning of the season, we were hitting it hard in the first inning, going at people, and then it kind of fell off a little bit,” Palya explained. “We have worked really hard on hitting, making sure we’re at the plate with a good approach.”

Hanover will need that approach in all three phases in the rematch with a Powhatan squad who, after starting 1-3, has won 14 of their last 16 games.

White capped the eight-run outburst with her only hit of the evening, a grand slam that brought in Rhodes, Radcliffe and Sienna Perry.

Hanover boys, girls advance to region semis

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Twice during the regular season, Patrick Henry’s boys soccer team defeated Hanover.

So when the two teams met in a Region 4B quarterfinal Thursday, the third-seeded Hawks had plenty of incentive to beat the sixth-seeded Patriots.

The incentive, assuming it was needed, worked. Hanover controlled the pitch in a dominant performance for a 4-1 win.

The Hawks traveled to No. 2 Chancellor for the region semifinal Tuesday after this edition went to press.

Hanover head coach Laurent Body said the Hawks made no special adjustments for the Patriots in the quarterfinal.

“None at all, because the two (previous) games we had opportunities, but did not put them in,” he said. “Tonight, we

Thanks to some encouragement from his mom Debbie Lunsford, he took the leap into the world of music. And now the 16-year-old from Mechanicsville is preparing to move to Texas to pursue his dream.

On Aug. 20, Abram and his mother will head to Dallas where he has been accepted to study — and hone his skills — with the Linda Septien Entertainment Group.

School district again expects full accreditation For the ninth consecutive year, Hanover County Public Schools will again receive 100 percent full accreditation.

According to Dale S. Theakston, communications specialist, the accreditation is determined based on the 200910 Standards of Learning assessments. Preliminary information from the Virginia Department of Education indicates the accreditation status.

Final accreditation reports are expected on Sept. 15.

The exhumed human remains and funerary objects will be temporarily curated at the Radford University Forensic Science Institute, and will be respectfully reburied at the location chosen by the families involved.

Among those attending was Frances Wessells, 99, who founded the VCU and University of Richmond Dance Programs. She choreographed and taught dance as an assistant professor at VCU for many years. Barbara Wilkins, the owner of Senior Helpers, said, “We surprised her by bringing her to the show choir performance, announced from the stage that she was in the audience and gave her a big bouquet of flowers. And, most recently, Scott Wyatt wants the public to think that his nomination has been secured by a vote of the 1st Congressional District Committee, prompting the Republican Party of Virginia’s general counsel to issue a press release stating that is absolutely not true.

Scott Wyatt’s false claims of victory have been repeatedly rejected by the party he claims to represent. Why does he continue to make such statements?

Because he does not want the hard-working, tax-paying, law-abiding, conservative voters of the 97th District to cast their ballots in the official Republican “firehouse” primary on Saturday, June 1.

ECHANICSVILLE -- On Wednesday, June 5, Historic Polegreen Church will host a Naturalization Ceremony, with over 70 people receiving their citizenship during the procession.

Polegreen Church is located at 6411 Heatherwood Drive in Mechanicsville.

The ceremony will start at 11 a.m., with the Lee-Davis Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps bringing in our nation’s colors. This will be followed by the singing of the Lee-Davis Chorus.

Last year’s event was described as “very successful

and emotionally moving.”

Beth Young, the Historic Polegreen Church Foundation’s operations director, has helped host two Naturalization Ceremonies and said she is looking forward to experiencing a third.

“I love watching the faces of the new citizens as they finally receive their citizenship after years of perseverance and devotion,” she said.

Historic Polegreen Church is an important site for religious freedom and serves as a very patriotic spot to receive one’s American citizenship. The Historic Polegreen Church Executive Board’s treasurer, Dave Fuller, said he believes that the significance of Historic Polegreen Church

combined with a naturalization ceremony is monumental.

“More than 275 years ago, people first gathered at Polegreen to worship freely,” Fuller said. “That we can today gather at this remarkable site to launch figuratively a new beginning for American citizens is indeed quite special.”

The public is invited to attend the ceremony and join in welcoming the new citizens.

Imani Milele is a Swahili phrase meaning “Always Believe”. This is the message given to children, encouraging them to never give up. Imani carries this motto with them as they perform for people

across the United States.

Members of the Uganda Children’s Choir operates with the belief that every child is special and they are dedicated to changing the world, one child at a time, through education.

The choir is an integral part of the Imani Milele Children’s organization. Members rescue, educate, and develop over 5,000 children in Uganda. With the help of groups and individuals like members of this community, Imani is forming a strong and pas-

sionate team that works together to make a difference in the lives of these children.

The choir has been treating audiences to fun-filled, interactive and inspirational concerts since 2013. Expect to experience “True Africa”, which is showcased through culturally unique music, dance and wellcrafted drum routines. Imanis’ vibrant costumes and enthusiastic energy creates a dynamic performance for all to enjoy.
