Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com RICHMOND — Children’s Hospital Foundation has announced a $500,000 gift made by the estate of Charles Francis Myers to benefit the Hematology and Oncology Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR).

The gift supports construction of the clinic in the hospital’s new Children’s Pavilion, which will open in March 2016. Additional funds from

the estate are expected to be added to the donation in the near future.

“Mr. Myers’ generosity is a true testament to the way in which he lived his life,” said Chris Broughton-Spruill, president, Children’s Hospital Foundation. “He cared for others and especially wanted the children of his community to benefit from his hard work throughout his life. We are so grateful for his unselfish support.”

Fowler Jr., R-55, handily bested their opponents in the Nov. 3 General Election to return to the Virginia General Assembly.

Peace defeated Erica M. Lawler, an Independent, 8,329 to 2,041. There were 38 writein votes. Fowler held on to his seat with a 7,423 to 4,444 win over Democrat Toni L. Radler.

work was a frequent gift to friends and loved ones.

When his wife passed away in 2007, Myers shortly afterwards moved to Hanover Manor Assisted Living in Ashland. He lived there for seven years and next moved to Autumn Care Rehab & Nursing Facility in Mechanicsville until his death on June 8 after a courageous fight with cancer.

In acknowledgment of his generous gift, the Hematology and Oncology Clinic will be dedicated to his memory. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This gift represents a great commitment to improving the environment for children who are undergoing cancer treatment and care,â&#x20AC;? said Broughton-Spruill. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It will be a technologically advanced space with a welcoming and

compassionate atmosphere for children and families.â&#x20AC;?

When it opens, CHoRâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pavilion will be the largest, most advanced outpatient facility dedicated to children in the region.

The new pavilion will include diagnostic and treatment services for children, bringing together the majority of outpatient pediatric services currently on the MCV campus to one location.

The building is designed to meet the unique health care needs of children, and to provide Richmond the most advanced and coordinated care possible.

Explaining Daylight Saving isn’t easy

Election ’15 almost got lost in presidential bids We had an election in Hanover County last week and, thanks to the participation of candidates in these pages, you were informed about their platforms, political philosophies, etc. That being said, we’ve already been overwhelmed with the presidential election of 2016.

As Donald Trump soared in early polling in the Republican Party, here’s one voter who was totally dumbfounded by the rally of support for him.

These days, however, Dr. Ben Carson has jumped ahead, while some of the many GOP candidates who threw their hats into the ring early have chosen not to seek the nation’s top office.

And then there’s Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Not even going to talk about them at this point.

Millions of dollars will be spent in the coming months, which is unsettling when we live in a country that has residents who are in need. It’s obscene at the monies spent to win elected office.

Years ago, a political hack (and that’s what he was) in my home county actually talked about delivering Kroger grocery bags filled with cash to a candidate for a state office. Sadly, it came as no surprise.

I’ve seen far too many offices bought, with little if any thought for the people they are elected to serve. Power is intoxicating, but what price must we pay for others’ egos?

So, go ahead and mark your calendars for the Democratic and Republican primaries that will be held on March 1.

Halloween just isn’t the same Even though my home is located in a nice neighborhood, no trick-ortreaters arrived on Halloween in their costumes and carrying a bucket or bag to fill with treats. We were prepared, but, alas, there were no characters from “Frozen” (or whatever the costume of 2015 was) or ghosts or goblins roaming the streets and ringing doorbells. I get it though — Halloween isn’t what it was when I was a kid. And that’s too bad — it was a good time “back in the day.”

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist We go through the same motions each year as we spring forward and fall back with our clocks, and, to many, the ritual has become routine and performed without much thought.

But, explaining how Daylight Saving Time works is a much more challenging task when you are speaking to children. The thought that time can be turned back and extended just doesn’t register with them, and

the process seems much more complicated than simply adjusting a few clocks.

That’s the question that kept creeping up at my house the weekend the time changed, the hows and whys behind Daylight Saving Time (DST) and its return to normal time schedules we perform each fall.

Like many traditions and practices, DST is a European invention, and there is evidence that ancient civilizations practiced some form of the sunsaving measure centuries ago.

Benjamin Franklin hinted at its inception in 1784 when he penned an essay in France entitled An Economist Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light. He suggested Parisians rise earlier to preserve the precious light of the day.

Parliament considered a law that would install DST several weeks a year in 1908 but it didn’t pass.

But, the real impetus for enacting DST was prompted by World War I see DAYLIGHT, pg. 8

Questioning fundraisers for county fire departments I received a letter a week or so back from “EMS Direct Mail Marketing and Fundraising,” Aston, Pennsylvania, asking for money for the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department Inc. (Note: MVFD is incorporated) does that mean they are not associated with Hanover County?)

Do you realize that up to 70 percent of the money collected can go to these fundraising companies? Seems a bit much to ask the citizens of Hanover to send money to help volunteers and then give up to 70 percent of the money to some entrepreneur using an American soft spot to support a business.

I was thinking Hanover County took over Fire-EMS and with a budget in excess of $15 million. Why are we doing fundraisers?

The brochure from the fundraising company says money collected in the past was used to refurbish rescue #7.

If we need a truck refurbished, why don’t we have the Hanover County Board of Supervisors find another overpaid employee (like the past Hanover County Schoolssponsored traffic engineer) and give that wasted money to the volunteers?

I actually think it is a rip-off to take money from Hanover County citizens like this. Some of these givers don’t have enough money to support themselves and yet they donate because: #1, they may believe this is actually the county collecting the money, or, #2, they may believe they will not get rescued if they don’t contribute.

Taxpayers should remember they are already contributing with taxes to purchase buildings, equipment, pay salaries, benefits and retirement for these services.

The disgrace is this: up to 70 percent of a person’s hardearned donated money can go to the fundraiser.

Think about it, you send $20 to Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department Inc. and up to $14 of the $20 can go to the fundraising company, leaving $6 for MVFD. Here’s a better way for you to donate. If Hanover County wants to use an outside fundraiser and you want to donate say $20, don’t use the fundraising envelope, use your own envelope and send $6 instead of $20. Exactly the same money getting to MVFD but you keep the $14 instead of giving it to someone probably driving a Mercedes and belonging to the country club.

Another thing not making sense — seems everyone is into having “Trunk or Treat” supposedly to keep kids safer by keeping them off the street at Halloween. How does this work when most trunk or treats are done the week before Halloween?

There is a tragedy brewing in the Hanover County Public Schools system. The public is uninformed of the very serious nature of this dire situation.

And, apparently, no one on the Hanover County School Board or in the school administration is willing to challenge this unfolding dilemma.

The exodus and suspensions of high school teachers at Hanover High School has remained hidden from public view.

The Hanover County Electoral Board was scheduled to canvass the election results last week.

“We are already preparing for the Dual Presidential Primary to be held on March 1, 2016,” Smithson added.

“Absentee ballots for that election will be available on Jan. 14,

2016. We will need many more citizens to serve as an Officers of Election.”

Around 3 p.m. on Election Day, she said there weren’t “any glitches, setbacks or irregularities at this point in time.”

“It’s been great. Voter turnout has been, well, we anticipated reasonably light, so our electoral board members have been out and checking out the

polling places,” she said.

“The electoral board member reported back that he believed – Mr. [Louis] Szari, vice chair of the electoral board, said he was anticipating – based on what he saw this morning – about a 30 to 35 percent turnout in the Mechanicsville area. It’s been pretty quiet.”

The results are unofficial.

The classroom events that led to these suspensions were, according to multiple sources, considered unacceptable to only two students and their parents. Their complaints resulted in the teachers being kicked out of the classroom.

There is no information that school officials defended or supported their teachers.

On the contrary, it seems these school officials responded to pressure and pushed through the suspensions.

Members of the board of supervisors, namely Sean Davis, Walt Hazzard and Canova Peterson, have shown outrage when viewpoints that were unfavorable to the United States were discussed in the

classroom.

These powerful BOS members have a right to their opinion. These gentlemen would, it seems, prefer to have our high school students stuffed in a box and then sealed with glue and tape. They would not want students to hear anything that originated outside that box!

But do members of the BOS have the right to shut down and intimidate teachers, disrupt classrooms, and to dictate what literature and art work will be used?

Overall, the school system officials have responded by saying “yes.” Most parents, with a few exceptions, are either oblivious to the facts or do not wish to become involved.

Is Fahrenheit 451 right around the corner?

When will To Kill Mockingbird be banned ... for the second time?

Let us as a community have the courage to find the truth.

Failure to deal with this matter will only allow the Hanover County Public Schools system to spiral into disaster.

I challenge the Hanover County School Board to hold a public forum on this matter, to hear the concerns of parents and students, and to then determine the facts behind the resignations and ongoing suspensions of outstanding teachers at Hanover High.

during World War II and year-round DST, or War Time, became the norm for Americans for years during the conflict. A practice called Double War Time was instituted in Britain where clocks were set ahead by two hours in the summer to prolong daylight hours.

After the war, it was up to broadcast leaders and other officials to determine if DST would be used and there was confusion from one state to the next. So, in 1965, Congress decided to make DST uniform for the nation, beginning on the last Sunday in April and ending the last day in October.

The period was extended during the 1973 oil embargo, and some experts said it saved

10,000 barrels of oil a day.

Parents argued the dark mornings were a hazard to their children who walked to bus stops without the morning sun provided by the normal schedule.

The importance of leisure time and quality periods with family won the day, and Americans accepted DST as a social mandate aimed at making their lives better. At least, more of it could be spent in daylight.

So, it all seems simple enough. Clocks are set one hour forward when DST begins and set back one hour when it ends.

But, the minds of pre-teens don’t work exactly that way, and, try as I did, I couldn’t make

them understand how time moves forward and reverses.

They approached the matter from a physical point of view and asked about the earth’s rotation and how it could be altered to accommodate DST. I explained that it wasn’t nature being manipulated, but man altering a man-made time-telling system, but they seemed puzzled when the conversation ended.

That became even more apparent when one made an under the breath comment that summed up their confusion regarding DST. “I thought you told us it wasn’t nice to fool Mother Nature?”

We’ll try again in the spring.

It was long before President Woodrow Wilson followed suit and “fast time” as Americans knew it became the law of the land.

Raymond D. Durvin Sr., 96, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord Sunday, November 1, 2015. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie H. Durvin; parents, Georgia Ann and Charles L. Durvin; brothers, Charles L. Durvin Jr. and Theodore Lee Durvin; and sister, Gladys D. Harris. Raymond is survived by two children, Sheryl D. Taylor and Raymond D. Durvin Jr. (Joan); four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was a World War II Army veteran, a 59year member of Washington and Henry Lodge # 344 AF & AM, and was a member of Fairmount Memorial Baptist Church. Up until the very end,

Raymond remained active and was always willing to take a trip regardless of the destination. He thoroughly enjoyed time spent with his family and lived every day to its fullest.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 5, 2015, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home at 8014 Lee-Davis Road.

NANCY FRANKLIN Nancy Lee Franklin, 67, of Mechanicsville, departed this life October 31, 2015. HOWARD E. McGREGOR Howard E. McGregor, of Mechanicsville, passed on November 4, 2015, he was 62. Howard was born in Richmond, on January 5, 1953.

He is survived by his brother, Jimmy McGregor, and an aunt, E. Kaufelt, as well as numerous cousins and friends. A graveside service was held at 10:30 a.m.

DOROTHEA STEPHENS Dorothea Mae Stephens, 83, of Mechanicsville, passed away Sunday, November 1, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Edward Lee Stephens Jr. She is survived by her children, Wanda Stephens, Mark Stephens (Jane) and Jeff Stephens; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and her beloved dog, Lee. Dorothea was a bus driver for Hanover County Public Schools for 50 years. She will always be remembered for her home cooked meals. She never let anyone leave hungry and always had treats for visitors.

She was an equestrian and rode competitively from the age of 5. A graveside service was held at noon Friday, November 6, 2015, at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Doris is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Waller Yancey of Mechanicsville; two sons, Aubrey Gary Waller of Graham, Washington, and Donald Glenn (Gator) Waller (Judy) of Mechanicsville; the love of her life, granddaughter, Amanda W. Robertson (Trey); a beloved sister, Vivian Fritter, who was always by her side.

Her happiest moments were working in her flower gardens, which she was very proud of.

MARY WHALEY Kathryn Polsue Whaley passed from this life to the next on Friday, October 30, 2015, in Harrisonburg. Mrs. Whaley moved to Sunnyside Retirement Community in Harrisonburg after living in Blacksburg for 44 years. Mrs. Whaley was born on August 19, 1929, in Charleston, West Virginia, to Ruth Myers Polsue and William C. Polsue MD. She graduated from Charleston High School in 1947 and from Madison College (now James Madison University) in 1951 with a degree in elementary education. Mrs. Whaley loved teaching in Richmond, Martinsville and Blacksburg.

She also served others as a Sunday School teacher, Girl Scouts leader, neighbor and friend. Mary K. Whaley always put the needs of others ahead of her own. She was a beloved and devoted wife and mother. In 1981, Mrs. Whaley was honored by the Montgomery County (Virginia) News Messenger as Woman of the Year for her service to the community as a reading teacher, neighbor and friend. She served the Women in the Church, the InterFaith Food Pantry and many

other causes. While attending church in Richmond, she was introduced to Leigh C. Whaley Jr. by his sister, Helen Whaley. Soon, wedding bells were ringing and the couple resided in Front Royal, Bedford, Martinsville, Blacksburg and Harrisonburg.

Mrs. Whaley is survived by her loving husband, Leigh C. Whaley Jr. of Harrisonburg; her children, Kathryn Whaley Pugh (Frank) of Leesburg, Susan Whaley Walsh (David) of Mechanicsville and Leigh Carrington (Cary) Whaley III of Silver Springs, Maryland.

Mrs. Whaley also is survived by six grandchildren.

Mrs. Whaley was preceded in death by her parents.

A memorial service was held Monday, November 2, 2015, at Meredith Chapel at 3935 Sunnyside Drive in Harrisonburg. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m.

Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at Oakhurst Cemetery in Clarksville. Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church and the Alzheimer’s Association.

STEPHEN WILKINSON Stephen Charles Wilkinson, 66, went Home to be with his Lord and Savior on November 1, 2015, from complications of pneumonia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Garland and Leigh Wilkinson; and stepson, Alex Arrington.

He is survived by his loving wife, Alexis; sister, Joyce Kincaid; son, Sgt. Brian G. Wilkinson (Christina); daughter, Stephanie Malon (Capt.

Andrew L. Malon); stepdaughter, Andrea Fields (Kevin); grandchildren, Mandy Fields, Hannah and Kendall

Arrington, Caleb Prevatt, Andrew and Seth Malon; and great-granddaughters, Zoie Lemons and Xela Fields. He also is survived by his former wife, Candace Wilkinson, as well as extended family and friends. He was a 1972 graduate of the University of Richmond, where he received a degree in economics, as well as a former volunteer at the Rockville Fire Department.

He was retired from Virginia Credit Union. A celebration of his life was held at 11 a.m.

ANNIE WILLIAMSON Annie Loving Williamson was born November 4, 1928, in Hanover County. Annie passed away on October 28, 2015, at her home in Dallas, Texas. She was the daughter of Julia P. Loving and Herbert Loving. Annie was preceded in death by her parents, and by her sisters, Margaret Wingfield and Joyce Stanley; and her brother, Vernon Loving. Annie is survived by her immediate family, including her husband, Charles C. Williamson; her son, Chuck; and her granddaughter, Genevieve Williamson Heidenreich. Her sisters and brothers, Francis Hale, Doris Tignor, Jean Goodman, Monroe Loving, Herbert Loving and Alvin Loving, also are remembering her. Annie graduated from JohnstonWillis Hospital School in 1952 and went on to have a career as a Registered Nurse. Sgt. Frank Dressler, Sgt. Tim Simpson, Deputy Barry Bland, Investigator Matt League, Deputy Kenny Winston, Lt, Karl Hartle and Firefighter/Medic Ryan Jordan received the Bronze Valor Award for putting themselves in harm’s way to rescue the victim of a traffic crash on Friday, Nov. 6. The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single vehicle traffic crash into a retention pond on March 10. When deputies arrived, they found the vehicle totally submerged in the middle of the pond.

Deputies immediately entered the 40-degree water to render aid to any occupants. Hanover Sheriff’s Office and Hanover Fire-EMS personnel were able to remove the driver from the vehicle and determine there were no other occupants. These first responders were commended for their quick thinking, teamwork and dedication to duty. The awards were presented at the 26th Annual Valor Awards, which was hosted by the Retail Merchants Association at the Richmond Convention Center.

He is the son of Andy and Kim Foxwell of Studley.

Tyler is a 2012 graduate of Hanover High School and is well-known in the Tri-Cities and Northern Neck areas as an accomplished guitarist, playing professionally since the age of 15. Tyler plans to perform locally for several months before moving to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a career in music entertainment.

SHLAND – For the inaugural “Light Up the Tracks,” which will be held Saturday, Dec. 5, elementary age students will be crafting ornaments for the holiday tree from 6 to 7 p.m. today (Wednesday, Nov 11) at the Ashland Branch Library at 201 S. Railroad Ave. in Ashland.

Each child will create an ornament based upon her or his favorite book.

The ornaments will then be weatherproofed.

Starting at daybreak today, commercial buildings on both sides of the track will be strung with holiday lights by Terrell Tree and Lawn Service.

The project got underway on Sunday, Nov. 8.

Organizer Dan Bartges said “Light Up the Tracks” is “a special celebration beginning Dec. 5 when Ashland (sometimes called “Mayberry with train tracks”) will transform itself into a mile-long holiday greeting card for train passengers and crews, as well as for residents and visitors.”

South Anna Elementary School presented Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.” Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6-7. Designed by elementary-aged performers, the musical is based on the 2008 Broadway production and the 1989 animated feature film. Twenty-five students from the second through fifth grade took part. ASHLAND — The Ashland Garden Club has had an extremely busy October.

On Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, club members participated in the Garden Club of Virginia Rose Show in Danville. The category was “Italian Renaissance,” and the club arrangement, featuring roses, lilies and more, won a red ribbon.

On Oct. 13, the club welcomed everyone to a “Fall Fantasy” luncheon and fundraiser. Held for the first time in Birdsong Hall at RandolphMacon College, the event included a silent auction, flower arrangers boutique, floral demonstration and more.

The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has two wonderful pets available to a good home. Reagan, 418512, is an (estimated) 11-year-old female hound. She has had her first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Reagan has been in the shelter for one month. She is an older girl but you couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t tell with all of her playfulness. She gets along great with other dogs and she loves people. Reagan would make a great family dog.

Jesse, 418716, is a (estimated) 10-year-old male domestic short-haired feline. He has had his first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV negative. Jesse is a nice old man who came to the shelter last month.

He has lost some of his teeth throughout the years but that has not stopped him from eating his food.

He does better with soft food. Jesse has a very sweet personality. He is very well litter trained.

The Atlee High School Marching Raiders, under the direction of Paul Rozecki, enjoyed a very successful season. This year’s show was “Back to the Future.” The band members got a special treat on the day of their final marching assessment on Saturday, Oct. 31. A DeLorean complete with a flux capacitor arrived from the future to take them back in time.

The Marching Raiders performed their show that afternoon and received a Superior/1 rating for the seventh straight year. This distinction makes them eligible to become a Virginia Honor Band. The band has received this honor 14 times. The band also placed first in the 4A division, and received first place General Effect, first place Music and first place Color Guard at the Lee-Davis Tournament of Champions, which was held on Oct. 24. At the Hermitage Classic, held earlier in the season, the band placed third in its division and won first place Color Guard. The Marching Raiders had a fun-filled season of going back in time with their “Back to the Future” show.

The Walnut Grove Baptist Church will have a communitywide “Stop Hunger Now” event from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, in the gymnasium. The goal is to fund and package over 20,000 meals in a two-hour period. These meals are primarily distributed to the needy in developing countries and storm-ravaged areas. Some lucky fifth grade students from Battlefield Park Elementary School literally bumped into Usher on Oct. 14 during a field trip to Washington, D.C. He was sitting on his bicycle.

Rather than approach him, the parents agreed to pose several boys yards ahead of the entertainer’s path so when he rode by they could take a photo with him in the background.

Usher made eye contact with the group and offered what was described as a genuine smile.

One parent said, “It seems he appreciated our unique, noninvasive photo opp. It turns out it was Usher’s birthday.”

Award-winning historical mystery authors Mary Miley and Bruce Holsinger will visit the Atlee Library at 6:30 p.m.

Miley, a historian, is the author of “The Impersonator,” winner of the Mystery Writers of America Best First Crime Novel award, and “Silent Murders,” two books of the Roaring Twenties Series.

Her alter ego, Mary Miley Theobold, has written 10 nonfiction books and 200 articles for a variety of magazines and newspapers. Bruce Holsinger, a University of Virginia English professor, is the author of “A Burnable Book,” winner of the John Hurt Fisher Prize and short-listed for the American Library Association’s Best Crime Novel of 2014. “The Invention of Fire,” his latest mystery, imagines the beginnings of gun violence in the western world. He has written for The Washington Post, Slate, The Nation and other publications. After short talks, there will be a “meet and greet” with light refreshments as well as a book signing. Everyone is invited to this free event sponsored by the Friends of Atlee Library and Atlee Library.

Ten citizens graduate CERT class HANOVER — Hanover County is preparing citizens to respond to emergencies in their communities by training them as a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Ten citizens recently graduated from the eighth Hanover County CERT class.

Graduates of the most recent CERT training class were Denise Carroll, Tim Farrell, David Foster, Donna Foster, John Goodman, Carolyn Guthrie, Kim Martin, Carol Moyer, Janine Owens and Cindy Perdue.

These volunteers completed eight sessions that covered various aspects of preparation for a disaster in their community, including providing medical assistance to victims and, light search and rescue operations and disaster psychology and team organization.

Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com M E C HA N IC S V I L L E — Hanover County officials, multiple congregations and Christian clergy will gather at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at Life Church at 8378 Atlee Rd. in Mechanicsville for a night of community worship and celebration entitled “Upward, Inward and Outward.”

This historic evening, the first ever hosted by Life Church, will feature music, prayers and preaching from various Christian traditions, ranging from Episcopal to Pentecostal and Methodist to Baptist.

During the service, worshipers are encouraged to bring a grocery bag containing the items needed to complete a Thanksgiving meal for a needy family – everything except the turkey. These food bags will be distributed by MCEF (Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Functions) to needy

Mechanicsville seniors and families at their foodpantry.

In addition, a cash offering will be collected to support MCEF and their efforts to care for the needy during the upcoming holiday season.

“In an age where Christianity is becoming increasingly marginalized, a Community Thanksgiving Service is a time for churches in Hanover County and the surrounding region to come together in a show of solidarity for our faith and a renewed emphasis in our mission to serve the residents of our county,” said the Rev. Joshua Lewis of Life Church.

Lewis began planning the ecumenical service this summer after spending time over coffee with Lynn Saunders, community liaison for MCEF. An advocate for Christian unity, Lewis saw MCEF as a “... vehicle that could be used to celebrate Christian unity rath-

er than the isolation that often happens between neighboring faith communities.”

MCEF has served residents of Mechanicsville since 1976 by providing food, clothing and financial assistance to families in the 23111 and 23116 zip codes when they face difficult times.

“Many Mechanicsville residents live paycheck to paycheck. We are called to support those who find themselves in a desperate situation, needing food, clothing or utility assistance. Our pantry provides food for over 200 seniors and families each month. It’s the support of the faith community working together that offers the hope they need to make it another day,” said Saunders.

The ecumenical worship service will feature special musical selections from the praise band of Grace Christian School and clergy participation from Episcopal Church of the Creator, Life Church,

Veterans Day ceremony to start at 2 p.m.

HANOVER — All are invited to honor our military veterans by attending a Veterans Day memorial ceremony at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Hanover Wayside Park.

The guest speaker at the ceremony will be Sean Davis, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and the Henry District’s representative on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors.

The American Legion Post 175 Honor Guard will perform the flag folding ceremony and lead the laying of the Memorial Wreath.

George Condyles of the Hanover Veterans Committee will be the Master of

Ceremonies.

The invocation and benediction will be given by the Rev. Leroy Davis of Hopeful Baptist Church in Montpelier.

James Kickler of the Hanover Veterans Committee will lead the pledge of allegiance.

Jimmy Barrett of the American Marine Corps League #329 will perform Taps.

The Virginia Army National Guard Hanover Armory A Battery will perform the various military rituals that honor our veterans, including the rifle salute and call to arms.

Parking will be available on the site.

By Chip Knighton For The Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – The time-honored football strategy of “get the ball to your shiftiest players in space” proved a wise one for Lee-Davis in the 57th Tomato Bowl on Friday night.

A 68-yard second-quarter touchdown pass from Chase Mummau to Miles Johnson – in which the senior receiver did the heavy lifting – helped the Confederates break out of their doldrums in a 29-18 victory over visiting Patrick Henry in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The win gives Lee-Davis a sweep of its Hanover County rivals – Patrick Henry, Atlee and Hanover – for the first time since 2012 and solidifies the Confederates’ playoff position in Region 5A South, where they entered the game as the sixth seed and left as fifth seed.

The Confederates will travel to No. 4 seed Douglas Freeman this Friday in the first round of the region playoffs.

Johnson’s big play came on third-and-3 after a holding call wiped away a Nathan Evans first down. Mummau found Johnson on the right sideline, and he worked his way down the sideline before shaking Patrick Henry cornerback Kwatayvous Blackwell with a PlayStation-level juke to free himself for a 68-yard score that

“It was a kickstart for sure,” Johnson said. “Our offense was coming out slow in the beginning. I told the coaches to get the ball in my hands so I could spark the ignition. I just went and made a play.”

In late August, Atlee’s field hockey team was in disarray. The Raiders had just lost a game 3-1 to county rival Lee-Davis. Earlier that week, they dropped their season opener to Gloucester 9-0.

Fast forward a little more than two months after their 0-2 start: The Raiders were playing for a berth in the state playoffs at Mountain View Wednesday in the Region 5A North semifinals.

Cheatham, Hawks stay step ahead of Henrico

By Jonathan Howard For the Times-Dispatch MECHANICSVILLE – After eight weeks of watching from the sidelines with a broken ankle, Hanover quarterback Clayton Cheatham was eager to get back on the field. It didn’t take long for the junior to make an impact.

Cheatham accounted for 292 yards of total offense and scored three touchdowns in a 24-21 victory over No. 7 Henrico (73). The third-and-final touchdown came with 4:58 left in regulation, giving the Hawks the final margin of victory.

The win locked up the second seed and a home game in the 4A East region for Hanover (7-3).

“To come back after eight weeks, the butterflies were definitely there,” Cheatham said. “I was jacked up, but after the first hit, you get in game mode and you’re ready to go.”

The visiting Warriors struck first, on their second possession, with a 63-yard touchdown pass from Lawrence Chambers to Kobe Chavis. Chambers drew the Hanover defense with a play-action pass, and found Chavis wide open along the sideline for the score.

Cheatham’s performance didn’t shock Hanover head coach Derek Stoud.

“I saw a kid that was ready to go and chomping at the bit

because he missed eight weeks in the season,” Stoud said.

“There was no nervousness out of him. There was no secondguessing should I play or should I not play. Once he was cleared he was playing and there wasn’t much thought about it.”

Down, but not out, Henrico would answer the Hawks’ offensive surge with a touchdown of its own and cut the lead to 17-14 shortly before halftime.

Chambers once again found a receiver for a long score, ending the seven-play drive with a 42-

yard strike down the seam to Darryl Green.

While big plays were made in the air in the first half, the second half was dominated by play on the ground. The teams each only had the ball one time in the third quarter, with both

drives ending on downs in the opponent’s territory.

When a drive finally succeeded, it was Henrico that found pay dirt first. Xavier Goodall capped an eight-play,

had a team meeting to discuss the team’s problems.

“I give them credit. The captains and the girls came together and said ‘We need to trust each other moving forward,’ ” Farling said. “They did that the next game and kept that streak going for a good while.”

After the loss to Lee-Davis, Atlee won eight straight games and thirteen of their final fourteen games to finish the regular

season with a 13-3 record.

The Raiders’ playoff run began when they beat Orange County in a Conference 16 semifinal 3-1. The victory gave them an automatic bid in regionals.

They lost in the Conference 16 final to Albemarle 3-2.

The Raiders went on to defeat Thomas JeffersonAlexandria 2-1 in the first round of the 5A North regional playoffs Monday to set up the

match up with Mountain View.

Despite the loss to Mountain View, Farling considered the season a success season.

“It was absolutely a successful season,” Farling said. “I told them ‘I know this was a frustrating loss but reminded them tonight of the success they’ve had this season and that they really need to be proud of that.’”

One key to the turnaround

was Rehmani, the senior goalkeeper.

“She’s phenomenal. She’s the quickest goalie I’ve ever worked with,” Farling said. “This month alone she’s probably had five or six games where she had 15-20 saves in a game.”

Farling admits the loss of Rehmani and eight other seniors will leave a big experience gap in their lineup next season. She feels, however, that

she has enough returning talent to have a strong team. The 2015 team had six juniors on the roster – including Claire Reagan who could slide into Fulk’s role in the center back position as well as the leadership – who will move up in addition to some junior varsity players who were called up to the varsity roster for the playoffs.

Atlee battles way through to conference title

By Chip Knighton For The Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – Atlee followed up a short burst of shaky play with an extended run of dominance to clinch a spot in next week’s Region 5A North girls volleyball tournament.

Senior middle Molly Jarvis found herself in the middle of the action as the Raiders roared back in the third game of a 2511, 25-10, 25-16 victory over Patrick Henry-Roanoke on Wednesday night.

Atlee (22-4) never trailed in the first two games before running into trouble in the third.

Patrick Henry won the first four points and stepped out to a 9-5 lead behind two Taylor Eichelberger kills.

“I think we just lost focus a little bit because we were up 2-0 and we won it by a pretty big margin,” Jarvis said. “We started goofing off a little too much.”

So she took control from there. She won a point with a dink, then finished four straight points after another Eichelberger winner, collecting two kills and blocking Megan Pace and Olivia Newman to tie the game at 10.

coming from my eyes, I think they knew I was serious and they had to do something,” Atlee coach Curtis Carpenter joked. “I had just told them [to maintain focus], and I reminded them that I just told them. It’s a negative after a nice win, but

we have to do better than that to be a championship team.”

That’s exactly what the Raiders were two years ago, when they won the Division 5A state championship. Jarvis and her fellow seniors were sophomores on that team and

saw their junior season end well short of that point, with a loss to Lee-Davis in the very round they moved past on Wednesday.

The Patriots (10-15) had one more run left after Jarvis’s hot streak, reeling off the next

three points, but it was all Atlee from there. Senior outside hitter Emalee Martin took control with three kills, flummoxing Patrick Henry’s blockers with her lefty hits from the right side, as the Raiders rang up 12 of the next 13 points for a 22-14 lead

they wouldn’t relinquish.

“When Em is on, she’s hard to stop,” Carpenter said. “A lot of it is because she hits a heavy ball and she’s left-handed. A lot of people, even when they figure that she’s left-handed, they still have a hard time blocking her.”

Kyra Walden led Atlee with nine kills. Jarvis had six kills and five blocks, while Martin added four kills and two blocks.

Madison Whitehurst had six kills, eight digs and one ace.

Eichelberger led Patrick Henry with six kills, six digs and two aces despite being the focus of Atlee’s defense.

“She is a beast,” Carpenter said. “We had a pretty good game plan for what to expect, and I thought that we executed our game plan very well and pretty much shut her down. If she got loose on us, we were going to be in trouble.”

Newman had 12 assists and three digs for the Patriots and Destiny Norman chipped in with three blocks.

HENRICO – It was all about changes and making adjustments in the Conference 11 girls volleyball semifinals at Hermitage High School.

The No. 1 Eagles defeated the No. 5 Confederates 25-16, 16-25, 25-23, 25-18 just one year after the Confederates knocked the Eagles out of the Region 5A

South semifinals.

“It’s a big win, we know that they are a great quality team,” said Mills Godwin coach Chris Wakefield. “I have been here four years now and that’s the first time we have beat them in the playoffs and to finally to get over that hump is a huge weight off of our shoulders.”

Even though Mills Godwin only gave up one set, it wasn’t the easiest of wins.

The Eagles flew past the Confederates in the first set, but struggled in the second when the Confederates made some adjustments on defense.

The Confederates went on a 6-0 run and led 20-14 before taking the second set.

“They are a well coached team,” said Wakefield. “We didn’t really respond to their adjustments well. It seemed like we gave up and didn’t have any

fight left in us.”

The Eagles’ struggles continued in the third set as the Confederates maintained a four-point lead. Then the Eagles came back to tie the Confederates three different times before sealing the set.

Hanover gains title with win over Powhatan

By Billy Fellin For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – On Sept. 2, the Powhatan Indians rolled into the Hanover gym to face the Hawks girls volleyball team. The match was a 3-1 win for Hanover, with an epic second set that went well beyond the normal 25 points.

Almost exactly two months later, the Indians returned to Hanover’s gym, this time in the Conference 20 final. Hanover coach Karl Lippa said that the team had a goal against the Indians this time.

“We dropped a set to them,” Lippa said. “We hadn’t done that very often this season. So, for us, our goal was to win in three.”

The Hawks achieved that goal as they won the Conference 20 title with a 25-18, 25-11, 2523 win over the Indians.

Hanover’s Leila Haynesworth and Kylie Tuxford were forces on the outside of the net for the Hawks (21-4).

Miranda Hall also was incredible effective at finding the soft spots in the Powhatan defense, which was unprepared for the onslaught that the Hawks threw

“We were very focused tonight,” Lippa said. “Our outside hitters were doing a nice job. Our team overall did a nice job, but it’s great when you have both sides working so well.”

Tuxford was especially effective, scoring 15 kills, three digs and two blocks. Miranda Hall had 14 kills, two digs and two aces, while Haynesworth had seven kills, five aces and five digs. Rebecca Hoover added nine digs and four aces.

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor EARLYSVILLE – Patrick Henry’s Grant Davis and Atlee’s Connor Moses and Caitlin Donovan led their respective packs for the second straight week as they finished ahead of all local runners in their races in the Region 5A North cross country championships at Panorama Farms Thursday.

Davis led all local runners with a ninth-place finish and Moses was second among local runners with a 13th-place finish in the boys championship race, while Donovan was sixth in the girls championship race on the hilly course laid out on the Virginia Piedmont.

All three qualified for the Virginia High School League Group 5A championships, which will be held at Great Meadows in The Plains Friday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m.

Davis and Moses will be the only representatives of their teams, while Donovan will be joined by the rest of Atlee’s girls team, which qualified to advance by finishing sixth in the region.

For Davis and Moses, the challenge was to meet the goals they had set for themselves.

Grant sought a top-10 finish, while Moses wanted to finish in the top 15. The challenge was made all the harder by the weather: while the weather of late has been cool, the temperature Thursday rose to just shy of 80 degrees and quite a few

runners were feeling the effects of it as they reached the end of the 5,000-meter course.

“The heat definitely threw us all a curve,” Davis said. “I don’t think anybody was really expecting it. We were all expecting it to be cool and possibly raining.”

Moses agreed.

“It made it tough,” he said.

“At the end, I was definitely feeling it. I really wanted to keep pushing myself to get top 15 and finally outsprinted a guy and had to dig really deep.”

Moses and Tuscarora’s John Heberle overtook Stafford’s Philip Lambert with less than 100 feet to go. Heberle finished 15th while Lambert finished 15th.

Donovan, who has been recovering from health prob-

lems that plagued her this season, was feeling even better than she was last week at the Conference 16 meet, but she’s not where she wants to be yet.

“I want to be able to get into the 19’s, but I finished just over, in 20-flat,” Donovan said.

“I feel a lot happier than I have been, but I still know that there’s room for improvement.”

Randolph-Macon one step closer to ODAC title

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND – RandolphMacon’s women’s volleyball team got is post-season off to a good start: with a win over Lynchburg.

The Yellow Jackets, who won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference regular season title, swept the Hornets 25-22, 2523, 25-12 Wednesday night in Crenshaw Gymnasium.

The ODAC tournament continued after this edition went to press Saturday with Randolph-Macon (23-7) meeting Roanoke (22-5). The ODAC final was held later that day.

The first two games were touch-and-go for the Yellow Jackets.

“We weren’t playing to our best potential,” said RandolphMacon outside hitter Courtney Lowers, who finished with 10 kills and 10 digs. “We were still trying to find their weaknesses.

They played really well. They were picking balls up, stuff that we weren’t expecting them to get up.”

Lynchburg head coach Beth Ellinger said her defense played exceptionally well.

“I think the defense and the hustle tonight was phenomenal,”

Ellinger said. “We didn’t let a lot of balls drop. I think that a lot of balls that would have scored on us in the earlier match in September didn’t tonight. We were hard to score on.”

Once the Yellow Jackets got into a groove, though, they

were able to get the points they needed to win game one. But the Hornets were equally tough the second game, closing to within a point, 24-23, before Randolph-Macon could get the win.

“We fought really hard,”

Ellinger said. “These guys own a lot of teams, and take them from the beginning and you don’t have a chance. But I don’t think they ever felt safe with us around, which made me feel good about the way we played tonight.”

“We just came up as a team and said, ‘Well, there’s not one person on the team who’s going to do this. We have to do this as a team,’ ” Lowers said. “We just

pulled each other together and said, “All right, simple things.

The third match, however, the Yellow Jackets pounced early and kept Lynchburg at a safe distance, even when the Hornets were doing a good job of keeping balls in the air on contested points. RandolphMacon did the same, keeping the ball in the air on its side until someone could get a shot through the Lynchburg defense.

“We just call that scrappiness, luck of the draw. Both are very athletic teams,” Lowers said. “Some of the balls that we got up in the air were just, ‘See if you can get an arm under it!’ and going for it.”

The Yellow Jackets has a lot of help in the passing and setting department. Riley Martin finished with 19 assists and Erin Quinn finished with 18 – combining for 14 more assists than the entire Lynchburg squad managed. Emily Ortiz, Addie Cooper and Katie Rossberg finished with eight kills apiece.

PRINCE GEORGE – When Atlee and Patrick Henry were paired on the same side of the bracket in the Conference 12 boys volleyball tournament, there was no chance that both teams would advance to the regional playoffs.

At best, both teams would meet in the conference semifinals and one team would elimi-

nate the other a game short of the regionals.

That is exactly what happened.

No. 1 Atlee met No. 4 Patrick Henry in the conference semis Wednesday at Prince George High School. While the Patriots rode an opening wave on intensity to victory in the first set, the steady Raiders plugged away to win the next three 22-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-18 and advance to the conference final.

“We’re a team that plays very level-headed,” said Atlee head coach Nick Robinson. “We don’t get too high on emotions and we don’t get too low on emotions. I think, over the course of a match, that that’s definitely to our advantage.”

Patrick Henry head coach Michael Townsend said the young Patriots squad made too many errors to keep up the momentum of their opening set win.

“It’s really hard to keep energy when the team’s making errors,” Townsend said. “You kind of start deflating yourself and that’s pretty much exactly what we did.”

The Raiders (24-2) defeated Matoaca 25-21, 25-19, 20-25, 25-16 in the conference final at Prince George Thursday. Both Atlee and the Warriors will advance to the Region 5A South tournament, which began earlier this week.
