STOPS AT EVERY HOME IN TOWN
Thousands greet new Republican ticket Romney joined by Paul in local campaign stop By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local A full house crowd of more than 5,000 enthusiastic supporters greeted presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and his newly announced running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, on Saturday to Ashland. Romney campaign officials quickly realized a scheduled visit to Homemades by Suzanne near the railroad wouldn’t come close to accommodating the large crowd, and moved the rally to Crenshaw Gymnasium at Randolph-Macon College. Even with the enlarged venue, some support-
ers couldn’t get in and enjoyed the festivities from an overflow zone established outside the gym. Joined by Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and Del. Chris Peace, R-97, Romney brought a message of a revived and renewed America to an appreciative audience at R-MC. Romney had surprised politically seasoned pundits by choosing Ryan, and many described it as a bold choice. The seventh term U.S. congressman wasted no time taking aim at the opposition. Jim Ridolphi for The Local “I’ve got some good news and some bad news,” Ryan said. “Let’s start with the bad news The team makes it official. By Dave Lawrence for The Mechanicsville Local (Editor’s note: Mechanicsville and many parts of Hanover County experienced the effects of an earthquake that struck the Louisa County community of Mineral last year.) In the wake of last year’s magnitude 5.8 earthquake that rattled buildings as far away as Georgia and Canada, big science last week began a protract-
ed detour to Louisa County. On Wednesday, staff from the Integrated Research Institutions in Seismology (IRIS) consortium, the state geologist’s office and James Madison University observed as an engineer from Honeywell installed a temporary seismic station on a farm just outside Mineral – located just a few miles from the epicenter of the temblor, which struck on Aug. 23, 2011, and see SEISMIC, pg. 8 `
