Last Wednesday, technology director Kirk Baumbach said that, even with anticipated technology problems, there would be no reduction in levels of service for public safety and being

Davis’ role was to provide direct aerial security for the operation. “My role in Bold Alligator was to provide battlefield commanders with airspace de-confliction, close air support, intelligence gathering, surveillance, and indirect mission support utilizing aircraft,” said the 2006 graduate of LeeDavis High School. The exercise incorporated 25 ships and more than 120 aircraft to improve executing maritime strategy; forward presence, deterrence, sea control, power projection, maritime security, humanitarian assistance and disaster response, along with working closely with allies. For Davis, amphibious operations covered required everyone to undergo specialized training before they could participate in Bold Alligator. “I prepared for Bold Alligator by attending JTAC school, close air support training at bombing ranges, and small unit land warfare tactics,” Davis, who has been in the military for five years, said. From the Navy ships offshore, to the Marines patrolling the mock villages located inland, the Navy and Marine Corps together played a major role in making this exercise as realistic as they can. Of the 50 positions proposed for elimination, more than 40 were funded positions in the FY12 budget. The remaining positions had been unfunded in prior budgets and are being eliminated. “Our evaluation process of the applications for early retirement is like a work in progress,” Harris said last week. “We’re trying to match what we’ve got with what we need.”

The early retirement program that attracted the applicants is a one-time program that allows full-time employees to end their employment between April 1 and Oct. 1 and receive a $13,000 incentive payable as cash, continued health insurance coverage through Sept. 30, 2013, or a combination of both. The deadline for applying was Feb. 29. “The purpose of the program is to reduce our workforce through a positive program and minimize the potential for reduction in force,” Janet Lawson, the county’s director of human resources, said. see APPLY, pg. 15

A concern for entrepreneurs also involves the Internet. “There’s a lot of noise on the Internet,” Mark Creery, president of Data Directions, told the Hanover Association of Businesses and Chamber of Commerce on March 6 at the organization’s Breakfast Series. “It’s tough to get your message out there to reach the people you want to reach.” Yet, when it comes to a business’s bottom line, Creery said, it’s not that expensive. “A lot of the things you need to do are free or cost very little. Most of the things don’t take a

lot of handholding to do.” First, he said, a new business owner should get a URL. “URL stands for Universal Resource Locator,” he said. “Basically, it’s your name. You want to register it so you go someplace like GoDaddy to do that. It might cost you $10 to register the name of your website, and, even though it might be another year until you build your website, you have your name and it’s registered.” Creery also pointed to LinkedIn and Facebook as two websites that can be very productive. “These websites are free. You can use them to put out personal and business information. You can grow your network and connect with people. No programming is required and using these websites is a good idea for

Marathon support will help kids with cancer On Sunday, Randy Sklar will head up Team Sklar in running a marathon in support of the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation. Team members will face 26.2 miles as they run to raise money for an organization designed to help make life better for kids living with cancer. “Leaving cancer in the dust, one stride at a time” is the slogan Team Sklar is using in efforts to bring attention to the ASK Foundation and its work on behalf of ailing children. On the website, www.askweb.org, it says, “Nothing can prepare you for the words ‘your child has cancer.’ It’s not natural, it’s not fair, but it is real. Children do get cancer and a family’s life is turned upside down.” Since 1975, ASK, which was founded by a small group of parents and pediatric cancer patients at MCV (now VCU Health Systems), has provided mutual support and searched for answers in dealing with “the devastating diagnoses.” Randy has a friend who has been affected, prompting his decision to help ASK. He said that 100 percent of donations will support the organization. ASK is mostly run by volunteers so that nearly all the money goes to families in needs, not administrative costs. Last year, Team Sklar, with Randy in the lead, raised $10,500 for the people associated with the ASK Foundation. He has set a goal of $12,000 this year. Insurance plan a lucrative deal No wonder the Obama administration is so dead-set on its new insurance rules. It looks like this mandate business could be a lucrative one â&#x20AC;&#x201D; for big government. For an organization like Catholic Charities, which employs more than 70,000 people, the fines for non-compliance could reach $140 million a year. In fact, any faith-based group that refuses to dish out contraception or abortioninducing pills would have to fork over $2,000 per employee, per year. All religious groups would be left to beat back an attack from all sides: legal, financial and moral. Those who do survive will have spent enormous capital in the fight. Some will be forced out of business, too economically crippled to carry out their mission. Those who do survive will be less able to help those less fortunate and

who have always counted on their charity in the past. And, after all, isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t this Obamaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s end game? Driving all religion and religious freedom out of the public space? South Anna students take top honors in economic event Donations needed for Friends of Mechanicsville Library sale

Hanover County Public School teachers Cammie Gemmill and Sallie Moncol led their student teams from South Anna Elementary School to achieve the highest valued portfolios in the VCU Region for the Fall 2011 Stock Market Game. With the support of the Virginia Council for Economic Education, teachers across Virginia are able to introduce students to the Stock Market Game. The program integrates math, social studies, business, economics and language skills while focusing on the importance of long-term savings and investment. Students work in small groups to manage a simulated investment portfolio over the course of 10-weeks.

The South Anna Elementary School teams earned top honors. Gemmill and Moncol guided South Anna Elementary School students Haley Adams, Douglas Keener, Matthew Cosby, Raelyn Tilman, Kyle Staudenmaier, Roger Horton, Adam Gemmill, Bronwyn Mitchell and Carter Prillaman to win the elementary division. The teachers and their student teams were recognized during the Jan. 10 Hanover County School Board meeting. They will attend an awards program in May at Virginia Commonwealth University. Alva Leigh Adkins, 83, went to be with the Lord March 9, 2012. She was preceded in death by one son, James “Jimmy”; and one daughter, Judy. Members of the Mechanicsville Christian Center recently visited the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, bearing giant thank you cards, which were signed by the congregation. They wanted to express their appreciation and support for the Sheriff’s Office for its continued service to the community. The Mechanicsville Christian Center also recently erected a banner on its property expressing the same sentiments.

The Hanover Radio Control Flying Club will host its 10th annual Swap Meet and 4th annual Indoor Electric Fun Fly on Saturday, March 24, at the Fairmount Christian Church at 6502 Creighton Road in Mechanicsville. The Swap Meet is an opportunity for model aircraft enthusiasts to buy, sell and trade aircraft, engines, radio controls, building equipment, support equipment, etc., and is open to the public. The annual event is an

opportunity to get great bargains on like-new condition or gently used aircraft and gear. The Indoor Electric Fun Fly to be held immediately following the swap meet is an opportunity for experienced pilots to knock the rust off of their flying skills after the winter and is an opportunity for the public to witness the fun and excitement that remote control model aviation has to offer as a hobby. Both events will take place at the Family Life Center at Fairmount Christian Church. The swap meet will be

open to the public at 8 a.m. for a $5 admission fee and the Fun Fly will get underway around 1 p.m. and is free for spectators. More information about these events and the Hanover Radio Control Flying Club can be found at hanoverrc.org

He is survived by his sister, Sydney Swann Williams Graff of Evington, Va.; a niece, Elizabeth Michelle Graff and her husband, Scott McLellan, their sons, Sean and Alex, of Cary, N.C.; a nephew, William Jeffrey Graff and his wife, Tracy, their children, Sarah, Mark and Andrew, of Forest, Va. He is also survived by an aunt, Alzerine S. Headley of Warsaw, Va. Until his father’s death in 1962, Val went to work with his dad every day at Williams Automotive on Lombardy Street in Richmond. He worked several years at Carbonics Industries in Mechanicsville. Through that job, he was named the Virginia Rehabilitant of the

Year by the Virginia Rehabilitation Association. Val was a fixture in the Mechanicsville area. He especially loved Mechanicsville Fire Station #7. The family wants to thank the Hanover CSB, Richmond Residential, his “family” and caretakers at Clark Circle, the ICU and Palliative Care staffs at MCV who all lovingly cared for him during the years and in his last days. In honor of Earth Day, Washington-Henry Elementary School’s PTA Go Green Committee will host its 3rd annual Earth Day Festival on Sunday, April 29. Man with Mechanisville ties in battle for his sight By Melody Kinser mkinser@mechlocal.com Last month, a Sandston husband and father with ties to Mechanicsville received the devastating news: He had been diagnosed with a debilitating disease that is a leading cause of blindness. Douglas Hart learned on Feb. 4 that he suffers from Ocular Histoplasmosis. The 29year-old has three children to support. His mother, Donna Dean Hart, was raised in Mechanicsville. Many members of the Dean family attend the

Mechanicsville Baptist Church. In an effort to help raise funds as her husband undergoes treatment, Kimberly Hart has set up a website, http:// www.giveforward.com/douglashartgiftofsight. According to Kimberly, Doug has lost sight in his left eye and has multiple lesions on his right eye. “He is getting injections of Avastin into his eyes to treat it,” she said. “He is waiting to see if he is a candidate for surgery.” She described Doug as “a devoted father, son and husband. Doug’s employment skill is that of an industrial plumber, which means he has frequently worked in older buildings – and possible exposure to the fungus. Kimberly also said that the fungal spores can become airborne if the soil is disturbed. They can be inhaled into the lungs, causing flu-like, cold symptoms. While the symptoms may be considered mild, she said it can lead to the retinal condition, Ocular Histoplasmosis Syndrome (OHS). “OHS is a leading cause of blindness in the 20- to 40-yearold age group and affects men and women equally,” Kimberly said. As she seeks support during this time of hardship for her husband and family, she said

more people need to be aware of the disease in the U.S., “especially those who have high-risk professions such as farmers, construction workers and landscapers.” She said blindness can occur suddenly, since the symptoms seem like the common cold. “Doug woke up one day with one blind eye, and it was incredibly scary,” she said. Atlee High School, Lee-Davis High School, Chickahominy Middle School and Stonewall Jackson Middle School represented Hanover County Public Schools in the fourth annual “National Archery in School Program” State Tournament. The state tournament was held on Feb. 25 at Meadow Event Park. Atlee Lee-Davis and Chickahominy all qualified to compete in the National Tournament, which will be held in May held in Louisvile, Ky. Atlee High School, Chickahominy Middle School and Chickahominy 6th Grade teams won their respective divisions with the middle school team winning the overall state championship. The Hanover Sheriff’s Office recently received a $500 charitable donation from Wawa for its participation in the “Hoagies for Heros” hoagie building contest that took place at Wawa’s grand opening event located at 10373 Sliding Hill Road. It was a friendly competition arranged by Wawa between the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and Hanover Fire/EMS, which Wawa designates as the “Finest vs. Bravest.” Both teams consisted of five members from each agency, who had three minutes to build as many hoagies as possible. While the competition was fierce, the Sheriff’s Office placed second by a narrow margin. The Sheriff’s Office has opted for the donation to be made to “Project Lifesaver,” which will directly benefit Hanover County residents who participate in this program. Global Youth Service Day kickoﬀ set Saturday All Hanover County youth are invited to attend the Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) Kickoff Party, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, at The Ozone at 11169 Air Park Road in Ashland. The event is hosted by the Hanover County Department of Community Resources and the GYSD Youth Planning Coalition. The Kickoff Party is free and open to the public.

GYSD is a world-wide event that mobilizes millions of children in more than 100 countries to serve their community over GYSD weekend on April 20-22. This is Hanover’s fifth year celebrating GYSD.
