Who Is David Carson?

G

raphic Designer David Carson was born in Texas on September 8th, 1954. For much of his teenage years and twenties David was a professional surfer, and competed in the World Surfing Championships while he worked as a high school Sociology teacher in California. In the late 70’s Carson learned to design with no formal training in the field and was focused on developing a unique typographic style. David had his first formal experience with graphic design in 1980 at the University of Arizona in a two-week graphic design course. He attended San Diego St. University as well as Oregon College of Commercial Art. Later on in 1983, while Carson was still teaching high school he went to Switzerland, where he attended a three-week workshop in graphic design where he met designer Hans-Rudolf Lutz, his teacher and first significant influence. David Carson’s early work is mainly considered to be postmodern, and he was very influential in the dirty-grunge movement in design trends of the 90’s. Carson’s work became well known in the late 80’s and early 90’s through skateboarding and surfing magazines.

Later, he went on to start one of his most well known projects, a lifestyle and music magazine called Ray Gun Magazine.

Currently Carson owns and operates from two studios, which are located in New York City and another in Charleston, South Carolina.

Typographic Style

B

y the late eighties Carson had developed his signature style, using “dirty” type and non-mainstream photography. He would later be dubbed the “father of grunge.” Carson made his first significant impact on the world of graphic design and typography with ideas that were called innovative even by those that were not fond of his work. Not afraid to break convention in one issue he used Dingbat as the font for what he considered a rather dull interview with Bryan Ferry. Carson’s work does not follow traditional graphic design standards. DC says that there is a part of him in every piece and he is emotionally attached to his design creations. Carson’s work has been said to be an exploration in thoughts and ideas that become “lost” in his and his target audience’s subconscious. Every piece is filled with visual information that could very well be considered too heavy for the eye to interpret, but Carson is still able communicate both the idea and the emotion behind his work. His experimental and abstract use of combinations of typographic elements and photography influenced

many designers to change their work methods and graphic designers from all around the world base their style on the new standards that have distinguished Carson’s work. With a certain knack for saying the obvious truths that nobody wants to hear, Carson has attracted a significant degree of controversy as well as a large amount of fans and equally as

“Dont confuse legibility with comunication.” many critics. If there is one quote made by David Carson that sums up his entire typographic style in a single sentence it would be, “Don’t confuse legibility with communication.

Just because something is legible doesn’t mean it communicates and, more importantly, doesn’t mean it communicates the right thing.”

Throughout his graphic design and high school teaching career, he has remained at heart a passionate surfer, an adventurous sort who loves travel, and who enjoys outdoor sports.

ounded in 1983, Transworld Skateboarding magazine decided to hire David Carson as art director in 1984 and he remained with the magazine until 1988. Throughout his time with TWS he helped to create a unique, one of a kind look for the magazine while working with photographers such as J. Grant Brittain and Spike Jonze, and had editorial contributions by professional skateboarders such as Lance Mountain, Tony Hawk, Mark Gonzales.

Throughout his work with Transworld Skateboarding, David was able to grow as an artist and experiment

with a multitude of design styles. He developed what is generally considered the hallmark of his work, including pages with overlapping photos and an incredible diversity of typefaces. There is an issue of TWS called the “Full Bleed Issue.� This is not only a reference to skateboarding accidents. It turns out that at this time it became possible for Transworld to make the images stretch to all edges of each page (a full bleed) for the first time. So David named the issue after a graphic design printing technique.

n 1989, during David Carson’s professional surfing career he qualified as the 8th best surfer in the world. His long career as a surfer, and being emerged in the surf subculture helped him to direct surfing magazines, called Beach Culture and Surfer magazine for many years. It was a notable controversial reworking of graphics and art direction when Carson came on board for Surfer magazine in October 1991. Sometimes referred to as the “bible of the sport,” Surfer magazine began life as a modest accompaniment to John Severson’s third surf film, Surf Fever. Titled The Surfer, 10,000 copies of the 32-page

First Annual Surf Photo Book were printed in 1960. The little magazine was packed with still photos and screengrabs from Severson’s 16mm footage, depicting surfers and waves of all stripes in a frenzy of stoke, crazy humor and death-defying bit-wave antics. it was arguably Surfer’s success that spawned the lifestyle and industry now known worldwide as surf culture. The magazine created a medium for advertising, which allowed surfrelated businesses to talk to a specific audience. It also allowed editors to give shape to the expanding network of surfers.

raphicDesignerDavidCarsonwasborninTexasonSeptember8th,1954.FormuchofhisteenageyearsandtwentiesDavidwasaprofessionalsurfer,and competedintheWorldSurfingChampionshipswhileheworkedasahighschoolSociologyteacherinCalifornia.Inthelate70’sCarsonlearnedtodesign withnoformaltraininginthefieldandwasfocusedondevelopingauniquetypographicstyle.Davidhadhisfirstformalexperiencewithgraphicdesignin 1980attheUniversityofArizonainatwo-weekgraphicdesigncourse.HeattendedSanDiegoSt.UniversityaswellasOregonCollegeofCommercialArt.

Lateronin1983,whileCarsonwasstillteachinghighschoolhewenttoSwitzerland,whereheattendedathree-weekworkshopingraphicdesignwherehemetdesigner Hans-RudolfLutz,histeacherandfirstsignificantinfluence.DavidCarson’searlyworkismainlyconsideredtobepost-modern,andhewasveryinfluentialinthe dirty-grungemovementindesigntrendsofthe90’s.Carson’sworkbecamewellknowninthelate80’sandearly90’sthroughskateboardingandsurfingmagazines.

Later,hewentontostartoneofhismostwellknownprojects,alifestyleandmusicmagazinecalledRayGunMagazine.CurrentlyCarsonownsandoperatesfromtwo studios,whicharelocatedinNewYorkCityandanotherinCharleston,SouthCarolina.

ythelateeightiesCarsonhaddevelopedhissignaturestyle,using“dirty”typeandnon-mainstreamphotography.Hewouldlaterbedubbedthe“fatherof grunge.”Carsonmadehisfirstsignificantimpactontheworldofgraphicdesignandtypographywithideasthatwerecalledinnovativeevenbythosethat werenotfondofhiswork.NotafraidtobreakconventioninoneissueheusedDingbatasthefontforwhatheconsideredaratherdullinterviewwithBryan Ferry.Carson’sworkdoesnotfollowtraditionalgraphicdesignstandards.DCsaysthatthereisapartofhimineverypieceandheisemotionallyattached

tohisdesigncreations.Carson’sworkhasbeensaidtobeanexplorationinthoughtsandideasthatbecome“lost”inhisandhistargetaudience’ssubconscious.

Everypieceisfilledwithvisualinformationthatcouldverywellbeconsideredtooheavyfortheeyetointerpret,butCarsonisstillablecommunicateboththe ideaandtheemotionbehindhiswork.Hisexperimentalandabstractuseofcombinationsoftypographicelementsandphotographyinfluencedmanydesignersto changetheirworkmethodsandgraphicdesignersfromallaroundtheworldbasetheirstyleonthenewstandardsthathavedistinguishedCarson’swork.Witha certainknackforsayingtheobvioustruthsthatnobodywantstohear,Carsonhasattractedasignificantdegreeofcontroversyaswellasalargeamountoffans andequallyasmanycritics.IfthereisonequotemadebyDavidCarsonthatsumsuphisentiretypographicstyleinasinglesentenceitwouldbe,“Don’tconfuse legibilitywithcommunication.Justbecausesomethingislegibledoesn’tmeanitcommunicatesand,moreimportantly,doesn’tmeanitcommunicatestheright thing.”Throughouthisgraphicdesignandhighschoolteachingcareer,hehasremainedatheartapassionatesurfer,anadventuroussortwholovestravel,and whoenjoysoutdoorsports.

ThroughouthistimewithTWShehelpedtocreateaunique,oneofakindlookforthemagazinewhileworkingwithphotographerssuchasJ.GrantBrittain andSpikeJonze,andhadeditorialcontributionsbyprofessionalskateboarderssuchasLanceMountain,TonyHawk,MarkGonzales.Throughouthiswork withTransworldSkateboarding,Davidwasabletogrowasanartistandexperimentwithamultitudeofdesignstyles.Hedevelopedwhatisgenerallycon-
