Most of us today are familiar with the concept of the smart home. Even if we are not yet one of the lucky ones already benefitting from products such as intelligent lighting, heating and security, which can be remotely controlled from a mobile, we are likely to be aware that such convenience and efficiency exists and might be hoping to install something similar soon.

Smart home potential Smart home devices and apps are part of the Internet of Things (IoT), which is growing at an exponential rate. Estimates by the business analyst firm, Gartner, put the number of connected devices in use in 2017 at 8.4 billion with a prediction that this will reach 20.4 billion by 2020.

Many of these connected devices will be in our homes as developers, manufacturers and IoT service providers look to capitalize on how connectivity makes our lives easier as well as more comfortable and convenient.

Services are king These stats are impressive but although the number of connected devices is important for critical mass and to enable the development of all

the possibilities for IoT, it is not the determining factor in the long-term success of IoT, or the smart home.

The enduring success of IoT depends on the perceived value that is derived from the services delivered by all those connected devices. The ultimate measure of this value will be if a service delivers a level of usefulness and convenience that a user doesn’t want to lose.

IoT holds great potential for consumers but there is one stumbling block that must be removed before connected devices become widely accepted by users in a smart home or more generally. The challenge to be addressed is consumer concern about potential data control issues and IoT industry leaders must alleviate these before confidence becomes compromised and the promise of the connected world and smart home - the delivery of value - will be left unfulfilled.

The IoT value/trust paradox In order to shed light on consumer perception of the value of IoT, a Cisco study explored what people find valuable and the role played by trust in their willingness to share data as part of the information exchange that drives

value in all types of connected services, including smart home applications.

When it comes to IoT in the world around us, the survey revealed that consumers have a high awareness of connected personal devices and services, including those within a smart home, which is good news for the IoT industry. Home security systems along with wearable fitness devices, smartwatches and health monitors were identified as being part of IoT according to 63 percent of respondents.

In addition, almost 50 percent of respondents said that smart home devices provide increased value, 66 percent saw increased convenience, and 60 percent increased efficiency.

Even more significant was that 53 percent said they were unwilling to disconnect temporarily or even permanently from their IoT devices and services, because those devices were too embedded in their daily lives.

Although unwilling to disconnect, the study also found that in general, consumers are not comfortable with their data being collected by either personal or public IoT devices - 53 percent said they would rather not have any data collected, and 52 percent had either a low level of trust or no trust g

at all that their data was secure. This very low level of trust is a real threat to the consumer perception of value and indicates a paradox: a high level of value for IoT devices, but a low level of trust in the very thing that drives IoT services – the exchange of data.

Increase consumer confidence in three steps Everyone involved in the connected home industry – from the original manufacturers of the connected products, the firms delivering IoT services, or those designing the homes where these devices will be installed – is poised on the edge of a huge market opportunity by being part of the IoT ecosystem. However, it will not realize its full potential unless the fear associated with IoT devices is addressed. Smart home businesses will live and die on their reputation for delivering trusted IoT services, with robust security and well managed data handling. Through this they will earn consumers’ trust and provide the security they need to embrace smart home living, So how can smart home businesses help resolve the paradox of value vs trust for their users in order

to accelerate and sustain IoT growth and the smart home?

Establish a clear, concise data policy then share it with customers.

Consumers want more transparency and control of the data collected and shared across connected devices and services. If consumers understand how their data is being treated and can be assured that it is managed appropriately, they will have a better experience. This will lead to improved Brand reputation for the device or service and – as the Cisco study reveals – some customers would be willing to share even more data.

Take granular control of data.

Not all data collected from a single device needs, or should, go directly to a public cloud. The ability to create a process to determine who gets what data, where and when and, crucially, the ability to show this to customers will be an important differentiator between vendors. Don’t take a blanket approach to IoT data.

Create accountability. Everyone in the IoT value chain has a critical role in data security, not just security software vendors: smart home device manufacturers, IoT service

providers, application developers, network providers and cloud platforms all have their part to play. Evaluate all providers in the IoT value chain and establish minimum security standards and requirements so each provider has accountability.

Towards the connected life There is no doubt about consumer demand for smart homes and connected services to provide convenience and efficiency. However, as data breaches continue to hit the headlines, consumers must be educated on how their data is being used to deliver these services in order for them to trust the technology and embrace the potential of a smart home.

For many of the service providers behind IoT, a platform will enable them to provide the data management and transparency required around IoT data governance in order to enhance consumer confidence and trust.

Ultimately, get this right and you will reap the rewards as consumerdemand in the smart home ecosystem is ripe and ready for harvest.

Bosch Security Systems to become Bosch Building Technologies

Grasbrunn, Germany – Effective March 1, 2018, the Bosch Security Systems division will be known as Bosch Building Technologies. In the system integration business, Bosch Security Systems already offers its customers more than security, safety, and communication technology solutions.

“We want the scope of our portfolio to be reflected better in our name as well,” says Gert van Iperen, president of the Bosch Security Systems division. The division comprises two organizationally discrete units, the global product business and the regional system integration services business, which operates in eight countries.

1. In these eight countries, the system integration unit provides integrated solutions for commercial buildings. Depending on the region, the portfolio includes building security, energy services, and building automation. For customers, this means planning, installation, and operation of these solutions, as well as additional services, from a single source.

2. The product business – to be known in the future as Bosch Security and Safety Systems – will continue to operate as a global supplier of video, intrusion, fire-alarm, and voice-alarm systems, as well as of access control systems and management software, all under the Bosch

brand. Its portfolio is rounded off with professional audio and conference systems for the transmission of voice, sound, and music. The products are distributed exclusively to system integrators or through wholesale dealers.

This step will not affect the names of the division’s legal entities.

Integrated solutions from a single source: the new Security business unit In its product business, Bosch Security Systems will merge its video systems, intrusion detection, as well as its access control and management software business units to form a single business unit, known as Security. In making this move, Bosch is responding to the growing demand for sector-specific, integrated security solutions. “In combining these three business units, our aim is to ensure we can meet our customers’ needs even better in the future. In the years ahead, we want to actively shape the process of transformation brought about by the internet of things, as well as to focus more on connectivity, integrated solutions, and services. At the same time, this move will strengthen our competitiveness,” van Iperen says.

Skanska is first to succesfully pilot Spaceti technology in the UK

Skanska, one of the world’s leading project development and construction groups has successfully piloted a revolutionary new technology developed by Spaceti in their UK head office at Maple Cross House.

Spaceti is a pioneer in the application of fully integrated location based IoT hardware and software technology for buildings. Siemens participating in redevelopment of New York’s Laguardia International airport A major redevelopment and construction project is designed to completely transform New York’s LaGuardia Airport into a world-class transportation hub that will more easily serve the tens of millions of travelers that pass through the airport each year. The Siemens Building Technologies Division is working with Skanska Walsh Joint Venture, the design-build contractor for the redevelopment of Central Terminal B, to deploy a Siemens intelligent infrastructure solution that includes an integrated building automation and fire/life safety system for the new central terminal complex.

The new Terminal B will be far more efficient and safer than its predecessor built in 1964. Siemens’ Desigo CC integrated building management platform will monitor the building automation, allowing for dynamic control of the facility’s systems in order to respond to the changing needs of the terminal’s operations. The Desigo Fire XLS-V fire alarm panel with voice capability will be at the heart of the fire alarm system, operating both in Terminal B and the central plant.

“The vision for the new terminal includes an enriched passenger experience by reducing gate delays and moving all passengers more safely and efficiently

throughout the airport,” says Ted Jadermark, Airport System Manager with Skanska Walsh Joint Venture.

“Integrating Siemens building automation and fire safety systems as we build the new facility gives us the ability to manage and monitor its dynamic daily operations with the increased confidence necessary to protect the comfort and safety of LaGuardia’s travelers and, at the same time, reduce emissions.”

The new terminal complex will be located closer to the existing Grand Central Parkway, freeing up valuable tarmac space for planes. It will also utilize an island-gate system, which will create nearly two miles of additional taxiways and lead to fewer gate delays and less carbon emissions from idling planes.

Wellness and Light - Human Centric Lighting The human eye has photoreceptors that respond to light; called rods and cones but a third photoreceptor was discovered in 2001 that changed the scenario of current light manufacturing. The discovery proffered a deeper relation between light and wellness. As a result, light innovation became more purposeful and humane.

This made human centric lighting (HCL) one of the biggest trends in the industry. The major applications of HCL are based on two kinds of lighting that influence human perception and explained as follows1. Biologically effective lighting to enhance cognitive performance, and 2. Emotionally effective lighting to create stimulating environments Though the benefits of HCL cannot be quantified since they are more behavioural in nature, but their applications have been quite diverse so far. For example, the provision of daylight type of lighting in cases of recovery, jetlag and school; in some cases treating skin disease or condition with light; and in some, it leads to better concentration, productivity and sleep. How one featured insurtech company will transform the smart home As we move further into the digital age, with new startup companies and innovators developing more intricate technologies, there’s a greater need to raise the question— who benefits from this tech?

During the Insuretech Connect Conference held in April, we learned that in many parts of the insurance industry, technology is vastly undervalued or used inefficiently. Contrasted to many other major industries where paperless billing, email/app notification and other automated systems are taking over, the insurance industry is very far from the technologically advanced, automated processing that one would imagine in a modern company.

The insurer’s core product hasn’t changed fundamentally since its start. However, with the explosion of technological advances, it’s undoubtedly going to look different in the future— a future where changes in technology and data, changes in societal trends and changes in behaviors open up amazing new possibilities for the industry.

Insurance companies already began to utilize some of the remarkable advantages in technology in areas that include: computer vision, conversational Ai, blockchain, robotics, and sensors.

Plumis Limited, a tech start-up based in London built a product for fire safety innovation that relies on a pivoting sensor to find the room’s hottest point and activate water mist sprinklers to that target area. Plumis’ product, Automist Smartscan, gives insurance underwriters a chance to “see” inside the risks their firm covers. Automist uses a black box to record every aspect of a fire breakout,

offering claims managers the chance to understand the damage’s scale, causation, and any preventative measures for the future. More importantly, Automist Smartscan addresses a fire in less time than a traditional fire sprinkler system, and with only one-tenth of the water supply. The value of which would mean far less time spent on the claims and compensation process.

Similarly, connectivity between the Smartscan system and insurers give Plumis and insurers the opportunity to create many more relevant services as the very nature of risk in homes begin to change. For example, this could open the door for a smartscan watermist system that also functions as a security system using some of the aforementioned areas of technology.

Changes in the world, and by extent the insurance industry, can seem scary. A future resulting in the elimination of human involvement, in addition to the increased connectivity and use of real time sensory controls like Automist Smartscan, will have consequences that will need to be addressed. The tech industry cannot face them alone. It is fundamentally important for insurers to be more involved with these tech companies, asking the relevant questions, testing their abilities and moving forward together in a world that will evolve with or without the industry’s input.

European travellers essentially invented the holiday rental. Modern landmarks include the launches of Gîtes de France in 1951 and Interhome in Switzerland in 1965. More recently, Owners Direct (now part of Expedia) and HolidayLettings (now Tripadvisorowned) pre-date FlipKey, HomeAway and Airbnb by nearly a decade.

The names of Europe’s holiday rental top-5 by booking volume are all familiar — Airbnb, Tripadvisor, Wyndham, HomeAway and Wimdu.

Yet between them, they account for less than 10% of the total market.

Almost 90% of holiday rentals revenue in Europe is generated by non-global players, including small or medium-sized agencies and homeowners who market their property directly. Travel and sharing economy giants can “personalise” their offering by investing in technology, marketing and SEO. But at the smaller scale (i.e. most of the market), personalising means better, more tailored service.

Renting smarter apartments benefits everyone in the chain, and will be increasingly important as smart home technologies gain consumer traction. After all, the “home from home” feeling is a holiday rental’s major advantage over a hotel or hostel.

Opening doors to smart rentals From an owner’s perspective, smart door locks are a major upgrade on mechanical security. With keys, there’s always a risk of loss, unauthorised copying, or even lending to unregistered guests. Without visiting the property in person, there’s no way to know your guests have locked up properly. High-end properties make an attractive target for thieves.

With a smart door lock, a property owner can issue or revoke keys whenever they like. It’s also simple to check remotely whether the front door is open or locked.

Intersec 2018 Intersec 2018 concludes in Dubai with all eyes on exciting future

AI and robotics take centre-stage with new technologies changing security, safety and fire protection landscape Dubai, UAE: The latest trends in artificial intelligence and robotics in policing societies, along with major projects fuelling growth in the Middle East commercial security landscape, were among many talking points, as Intersec concluded its 20th edition in Dubai yesterday (23 January).

The world’s leading trade fair for security, safety, and fire protection featured 1,337 exhibitors from 59 countries, while 29,532 visitors from 129 countries stopped by the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Sharing centre-stage were dozens of product launches, while live demonstrations of fire protection

equipment and drones used across a wide range of applications kept thousands of buyers and industry professionals entertained and informed.

The Dubai Police is one of Intersec’s long-standing Government Partners, along with the Dubai Civil Defence, Dubai Police Academy, the Security Industry Regulatory Agency (SIRA), and for the first time in 2018, the Dubai Municipality.

This year from its exhibition stand, the Dubai Police had a strong focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and smarter technologies to keep residents, visitors, and communities safe. It also showcased Robocop prototypes and new smart services that are already in place in its fully automated smart police station, which recently opened in September 2017.

Brig. Khalid Nasser Al Razooqi, Dubai Police’s Director General of Artificial Intelligence, gave an overview of the Government body’s vision toward using AI and robots in policing and protection.

“The Dubai Police has a target to be the smartest police force in the world, and we’ve been working on a new strategy based on AI that will ultimately increase the happiness of our residents and build Dubai to be the safest city in the world,” said Al Razooqi.

“We plan to use AI to help us not only reduce crimes, but increase our ability to predict potential crimes before they happen, along with reducing traffic accidents. We’ve introduced a crime prediction system as well as accident prediction system that can study the behaviours of drivers.

“With UAE car manufacturers, we’ll install sensors to study the behaviour of drivers and see how we can teach them the best way to drive. Vehicles will instruct police where they should cover based on data we have, and perhaps where there is crime.”

Al Razooqi said Dubai Police plans to open another eight Smart Police Stations in 2018, and while AI and robots will in the future take over more routine daily jobs, that won’t mean less ‘human’ manpower: “There have been rumours that due to AI and robotics at Dubai Police, that there will be less police officers but this is not true,” he added. “We’re going to create more advanced positions, where they can provide a better service to keep our residents and visitors happy and safe.”

Among the new features at the 20th edition of Intersec was an indoor Drone Zone, along with two dedicated conferences on Drones and Artificial Intelligence. Greg Agvent, Senior Director for CNN Aerial Imaging and Reporting, spoke at the Intersec Drones Conference about the potential uses for drones in information gathering.

Agvent said that drones can be effective to not only deliver new perspective of journalism and reporting, but can also be important tools for data capture that can have much wider implications: “We’re still at the very beginning of acknowledging what drones can do,” said Agvent. “Right now, almost exclusively, we’re working with video, but what about thermal imaging and forward looking infrared,

and what context and understanding can this add to a story?

“If we we’re covering search and rescue operations, what other sensors can we input? If we’re doing a story on drought, can we put a hygrometer on a drone and create data that supports the video story? There’re all sorts of opportunities for sensors to add new layers and context.”

Agvent said that Middle East Broadcasters wishing to utilise drones need to engage with their respective civil authorities and manufactures, adding: “That’s what’s so important about events like Intersec.

“It brings people together, where professionals from a wide range of sectors can gather to understand about the latest technologies, regulations, and industry-best practice in an area that is on a high-growth trajectory. We can’t do this alone. Operators, regulators and manufacturers aren’t going to solve the equations by themselves.”

Organised by Messe Frankfurt Middle East, Intersec spans seven show sections of Commercial Security, Fire & Rescue, Safety & Health, Homeland Security & Policing, Information & Cyber Security, Smart Home & Building Automation, and Physical & Perimeter Security.

With 483 exhibitors in 2018, Commercial Security represents the largest show section, and features twothirds of the world’s top 50 providers of video surveillance, access control, intrusion detection, analytics, and video management software.

Intersec has proved over the years to be a fruitful business platform for global leaders and industry startups alike. Korean company IDIS has exhibited for the past several years, and has watched its projects and partnerships in the Middle East expand significantly as a result of contacts established during the show.

“We’ve expanded our partner network with many due to the success of exhibiting at Intersec from 2015 to 2017,” said Harry Kwon, General Manager for IDIS in the Middle East and North Africa. “We’ve established new end-user customers and struck up strategic partnerships such as with G4S in Egypt and Saudi Arabia as a direct result of Intersec, with a number of projects now complete or underway.

“We were first introduced to Al Sulaiman Security Systems and Services (A4S) at Intersec two years ago and since then IDIS MENA has struck up a strategic alliance with A4S with the partnership paying dividends.

Both companies are now working on 150 leads and ten live projects. And we’re thrilled to announce at Intersec 2018 our project with Al Sulaiman Jewellers, that comprises 100 IDIS camera solution across 18 branches as well as offices,” added Kwon.

Meanwhile, Germany’s DoorBird was one of more than 30 companies in Intersec 2018’s fast-developing Smart Home and Building Automation section.

Pierre Dinnies, DoorBird’s Key Account Manager said the 2nd iteration was developed specifically to handle extreme Middle East conditions, enabling users to access their home’s video intercom via their mobile device and DoorBird App anywhere in the world, in real-time.

“DoorBird is the fastest IP intercom system in the market at this time.

That means if a visitor rings a bell, it takes two seconds for the user to be notified anywhere in the world via their mobile device,” said Dinnies of DoorBird, which was launched in 2015. “It’s a bi-directional video-audio, so users can converse with visitors real-time.”

“Users can also programme DoorBird so that it automatically locks and unlocks at designated times, allowing access to homes if required, for example, cleaning or maintenance companies. Everything is recorded and it can be integrated with existing home automation and security systems, so the opportunities are endless.

Of Intersec, Dinnies added: “We were very impressed with Intersec last year, and we met a lot of interesting people, so that’s why we decided to participate again in 2018. We need to meet consultants, integrators and installers and that’s who we meet here, from Germany and Vietnam and everywhere

With 83 percent international exhibitor participation, Intersec’s global footprint was underlined by 15 country pavilions from Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Korea, Pakistan, Singapore, Taiwan, UK, USA, and for the first time in 2018, Russia. UAE participation was also high, growing six percent year-on-year, with 223 exhibitors covering 10,500sqm of exhibition space.

found this year. Every year it adds more to my knowledge in the development of systems relating to security, fire protection, and CCTV. Things are moving so fast and we have to keep updated.”

The Burlington, Massachusetts, area is very desirable due to its proximity to an international airport, world-class hospitals and universities as well as upscale shopping and fine dining.

Lincoln Property Company, one of the most respected and diversified service firms in the United States, manages this 180,000 square foot office building for an equity firm. They have been updating the building’s systems over the past several years with TAC I/NET and other efficient components to meet Energy Star requirements. When the owners of the building decided ® to pursue LEED Certification as a differentiator in this highlycompetitive market, Lincoln Property Company worked with their trusted advisor, Schneider Electric, through its local Andover, Massachusetts, branch to take this 1970s building to the next level of energy efficiency.

We spend an inordinate amount of time in our workplace. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans spend 87% of their life indoors. The majority of industrialized countries follow suit.

So, it’s fair to say the buildings in which we live and work play a significant role in our daily lives.

Interestingly – when you ask people what kinds of buildings they use – most of us have a hard time to think beyond their home and work place. A simple exercise to overcome this is to chronologically go through your last week(s) and focus your memory on what you did in context of where those things happened. And all of a sudden you will remember the time you spent waiting at the airport, picking up your kids at preschool, sweating at the gym or circling the crowded parking lot at the mall.

3 building categories If we now grouped all the buildings you came up with into categories, we would probably end up with just a few such as residential, commercial and public buildings on the highest

level. Whereas everyone of us has maximum control over their own homes and how smart it has to be to provide the adequate levels of comfort, security, sustainability and fun, we all rely very much on others to provide this in buildings falling into one of the other two categories.

What to expect of a connected building?

And as simple as it sounds: behind every one of those buildings there is a business model. And as we believe at Salesforce, every business model needs to be centred around the customer.

So, if we all consider ourselves as customers of whoever plans, owns or operates a commercial or public building or parts of it: What would we expect? Which services, features and experiences could add value to our stay as residents or guests?

Can you now begin to imagine how connected buildings could provide intelligent services and tailored experiences to each and every one of us? Think of apps at work allowing you to engage and balance the temperature, lighting and fresh

air amongst all people in a meeting room or on a specific floor. Think of co-working spaces which know when you need how much space and what kind of equipment is helping you to get your job done – and, of course, offering a convenient reserved parking space at peak times. Think of vending machines that know which drinks to stock to ensure that your favourite one never runs out. Think of how you would like to experience work, travel, shopping, leisure activities and events.

Clearly, there is a huge lack of truly value added services, especially ones which are easy to consume How building technology needs to evolve Building technology in commercial and public buildings has been mostly focused on sensors and alarm systems, which inform different target groups in a building whenever a certain threshold is surpassed.

And this mostly happens in a very basic fashion e.g. through hardware in the building. But this is not really intuitive nor user friendly. Nor does it create much value beyond basic safety. Clearly, there is a huge lack of truly value added services, especially ones which are easy to consume and use e.g. providing the most effective and pleasant shopping trail through a mall you have never been to.

Connected buildings: When do they create value?

It is not rocket science that connecting devices and services will only be successful when it creates 38 I Winter 2018 I Smart Automation

value for customers and employees.

But I believe this to be especially true for connected commercial buildings which will play a key role in differentiating companies in the battle for customers and talent.

There is an opportunity to disrupt the way the market views building management – a move from selling a product, a room, a space, to offering services within that space that then sell that room. Building operators need to shift their thinking and understand that the next generation of workers wants services, not just a space to park their laptop.

Focus on connected building business models We spoke about this being a disruptive service, from the standpoint of product to service, and new ways of determining cost and contract models by supply and demand, one month

To bring this reality to life in the context of your specific environment might seem challenging. One must define a winning value proposition and create a balance between what is technically feasible to deliver the most value for the customer and solve for the underlying business case.
