Energy saving mode Save energy this winter with Paxton access control

C

hanges in the global energy supply, coupled with the expected increased winter demand have caused increases to the price of energy for businesses and households across the UK. As people look for ways to save energy, access control can be a helpful solution. The international security technology manufacturer, Paxton, provides guidance on how to efficiently manage building activity and save energy using Paxton’s access control systems.

Ofgem announced in August that the energy price cap could rise by 80% to an average of £3,549 per

household per year starting from October. The British Government have introduced an energy price guarantee to freeze prices at £2,500 per year for a typical household.

Businesses will have theirs capped at around £211 per MWh for electricity and £75 per MWh for gas, less than half the prices anticipated this winter.

Even though the average energy bills are now lower than originally expected, there is still substantial increase for households and businesses for the foreseeable future. Companies can reduce their bills by using smart security systems that integrate with their current infrastructure to control building

activity and limit energy usage.

Paxton has two award-winning systems, Net2 and Paxton10, both provide features that support a reduction in energy usage.

Chris Hodge, Functional Architect at Paxton, said: “Security systems do not consume much energy during standard operation, and they can be used to control activities on site to limit energy use, using Triggers and Actions.

“Using the standard events within the access control software, the systems can also be used to shut off power to equipment that is not in use. Therefore, they can help save energy to reduce environmental

impact and save money on bills.”

Triggers and actions enables automated events Paxton offers two simple-to-use security systems which are perfect for settings like schools, offices, hospitals, shops and factories. Net2 is a PC based access control solution that is ideal for managing doors and granting access to a building and facilities. Paxton10 integrates access control and video management on one platform whilst also offering remote, multi-site management. Both systems offer Triggers and Actions that can integrate appliances and provide automated functionality.

Steve Woodbridge, Paxton’s Global Training Manager, explains: “Triggers and Actions are a series of rules that enable site activities and help control users’ accessibility. For instance, facility managers can set ‘when the intruder alarm is armed’ as an event, so that when the system receives a signal that the event has happened, it will then trigger the action, which can be set as ‘switch off the lights’.

“One feature of Net2 is Occupancy Management. Site managers can set the occupancy level to zero and use Triggers and Actions to set the rule

to turn the lights or heating off when the occupancy level in a given area reaches zero.”

Steve goes on to explain: “Our latest system, Paxton10, adds another dimension by allowing site managers to set up constraints.

These constraints ensure that a condition is true before an action takes place. For example, if the rule is set to automatically turn on the air conditioning when a person enters the office, the constraint may be in place to ensure windows are closed before doing so.”

When talking about access control systems, people normally think of access through a door, but the same functionality can apply to other situations. Restricting permissions to energy-intensive appliances can ensure that only authorised personnel are making use of these services, and that energy is being saved when the appliances are not in use.

Steve said: “In some industries, like manufacturing, there are machines that consume a high-level of energy. Site administrators can

grant access to only the employees who are trained to use them, this can avoid unauthorised or non-related people wasting energy, by switching them off when they are not in use.”

Remote site management saves in-person visits Another useful energy saving feature is remote site management. This is enabled by Paxton’s easy-to-use app Paxton Connect. The app allows facility managers to remotely control their sites on smart devices from anywhere in the world with an internet connection.

Steve said: “Paxton Connect brings further convenience to building managers. They can manage sites instantly at the touch of a button. So, if an appliance is left switched on after working hours, they can login to the software and turn it off without travelling to the site.

“These features make building management smarter and more efficient, helping to reduce energy wastage and save on bills.”

Energy saving readers Whilst utilising features in security systems can help save energy, some users may also look for physical access control products, depending on their building security requirements. Paxton offers products such as readers and door handles that can be another useful energy saving option.

Steve explains: “Paxton manufactures Net2 Proximity Energy Saving Readers that act like a power switch. The readers are specially designed with a cover to retain a user’s card which turns the power on and off. The product can be installed in a way that power will only come when a valid user card is inserted.

When a person leaves a room and takes out the card, the appliances such as lights and air conditioning will automatically turn off as it’s like switching off the main power. This can help save energy in a simple and automated way.”

Low power wireless security If site managers are looking for

energy-friendly, secure door handles, PaxLock Pro is the ideal solution. It is compatible with Net2, Paxton10, or works as a standalone security device.

Chris Hodge said: “PaxLock Pro is a battery-run product and is efficiently designed to consume minimal energy to operate, for which the batteries generally last around two years.

“PaxLock Pro will enter a sleep mode when not in use, requiring minimal energy. Built-in capacitive sensors wake the unit when operation is required, and a user’s token is presented. This minimises energy consumption, especially at night or over weekends when the handles are in less use.”

Pioneering Spanish architects thrive in a BIM and specification partnership with ASSA ABLOY Fenwick Iribarren Architects have many years’ experience working with BIM. They have benefited from its transparency on projects in Spain and abroad. For Campus Acciona, a landmark new business and office development in the Hortaleza neighbourhood of Madrid, they sought a trusted BIM partner to streamline the specification process.

According to Javier Iribarren, BIM brings many collaboration advantages to complex workflows: “Projects are much more coordinated between the different disciplines, resulting in a more developed project arriving on site,” he explains.

“In a few years it is going to be the only way of developing these projects.”

For their Madrid project, Fenwick Iribarren aimed to save time in coordinating specification and parameters between building materials and their RevitÒ design.

SALTO achieves Secured by Design Secure Connected Device accreditation for IoT products

SALTO Systems has become one of the first electronic access control manufacturers to achieve Secured by Design’s new “Secure Connected Device” accreditation for IoT products.

With the Government soon to introduce new legislation in the shape of the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) Bill, coupled with a growing demand from Industry and current members seeking to gain accreditation for IoT products, Secured by Design has launched a new ‘Secure Connected Device’ accreditation scheme.

The new scheme enables companies providing IoT connected products and services to demonstrate that their products have achieved the appropriate and relevant IoT standards and certifications from an Secured by Design recognised certification body.

Working closely with certification bodies who assess IoT products and services against all 13 provisions of the ETSI EN 303 645 standard, Secured by Design’s IoT device assessment, identifies the level of risk associated with an IoT device and its ecosystem, providing recommendations on the appropriate certification routes.

Once third party testing and independent certification for a product has been achieved, the product will be awarded Secured by Design’s “Secure Connected

Device” accreditation, a unique and recognisable accreditation that will highlight products as having achieved the relevant IoT standards and certifications.

The requirements to obtain the Secure Connected Device accreditation are: IoT products and services need to have achieved the appropriate and relevant IoT standards and certifications conducted by an Secured by Design recognised certification body.

The certificate needs to be assessed against all 13 provisions of the ETSI EN 3030 645, which goes beyond the three provisions legislated by the UK Government.

The assessment is required to have been done hands on by the certifying bodies – Secured by Design do not accept self assessed certificates.

The IoT product or service needs to be assessed on an annual basis (every 12 months).

New Genetec research shows cybersecurity remains a top concern for physical security professionals worldwide Almost half of all respondents activated an improved cybersecurity strategy in 2022 As cybersecurity awareness month becomes a focus of discussion in October, new research conducted

by Genetec Inc. (“Genetec”), a leading technology provider of unified security, public safety, operations, and business intelligence solutions, shows that cybersecurity remains a top concern for physical security professionals going into 2023.

Based on insights from over 3,700 physical security leaders from around the world, the report revealed that almost half (49%) of the organisations surveyed had activated an improved cybersecurity strategy this year, and more than a third of all respondents (36%) are looking to invest in cybersecurity-related tools to improve their physical security environment in the next 12 months.

When asked about the challenges faced when managing employee and visitor safety, more than half of the organisations selected cybersecurity as their main challenge. This was particularly evident for organisations with over 100,000 employees, with 62.3% of them indicating that cybersecurity was their top challenge, compared to 52.1% for companies with under 100,000 employees.

Of the many capabilities related to cybersecurity and data protection deployed by physical security teams in the last year, cyber-hardening of physical security hardware and access control management were the most popular, with 40% of respondents implementing new measures targeting those capabilities.

“It’s reassuring to see physical security professionals prioritising their organisation’s cyber security posture,” said Mathieu Chevalier, Principal Security Architect at Genetec. “As the threat landscape continues to evolve, leading with a defense in depth strategy remains the best game plan that an organisation can have.

Businesses will need to put in place cybersecurity best practices and choose technology partners who offer higher levels of automation to stay on top of potential threats. They will also need to scrutinise their entire supply chain and demand continuous verification, rather than just hardening networks and systems.”

Water mist technology: VdS defines regulations for components and systems

The number of water mist extinguishing systems is increasing – however, test standards so far only existed for individual components. VdS is now closing this gap with Guidelines available for free download.

Cologne/Germany, September 1, 2022. Water mist systems use finely dispersed water to fight fires, thus displacing oxygen and absorbing heat – combining the effects of gas extinguishing and traditional sprinkler systems. The small droplet sizes (≤1 mm diameter) significantly enhance the effect of the water used, also minimizing water damage. VdS now backs up manufacturers as well as users with a basic product standard systematically testing effectiveness and reliability.

Until now, product regulations existed only for selected components (e.g. EN 17450-1, filters and strainers, or ISO 6182-9, nozzles from 12 bar); VdS testing was based on time-consuming case-by-case

analysis for every component. The newly published Guidelines provide immediate relief. “We have been testing water-based firefighting systems since they were first used in Europe – the new regulations incorporate several decades of experience”, emphasizes Frank Bzdega, head of the VdS laboratories for water extinguishing systems. “Hundreds of possible failures in this complex technology – one way to ensure that the systems always work when they are needed: the VdS Approval.“ The Guidelines VdS 3100, “High-pressure water mist systems, Requirements and test methods”, are available for free download in the vds-shop.de; for water mist sprinklers and nozzles of all pressure levels, VdS 3100-46 has also been newly published.

New State of Access Control Report underscores growing demand for future-proof mobile solutions With Convenience Being a Major Theme, 42% of Respondents Worldwide Indicate Plans to Upgrade to Mobile-Ready Systems HID Global, a worldwide leader in trusted identity solutions, announces the 2022 State of Access Control Report, providing insightful perspectives of the market’s current state and trends.

Who: Produced by IFSEC Global in partnership with HID Global, the report surveyed just over 1,000 respondents from across North America (56%), EMEA (29%) and Asia Pacific (15%) to detail trends in the procurement, installation, specification and operation of physical access control solutions.

What: The report describes the current state of the market, the technology being used, and trends that security and IT professionals are witnessing and foreseeing in the years to come, including: Convenience: Ease of use is the most crucial reason to upgrade to a new access control system, according to 60% of the respondents. This means that in addition to securing premises, a new system must provide a smooth and straightforward process for both users (employees, residents or visitors) and administrators (security, facilities and IT teams).

Mobile Access and Touchless Capabilities: It’s no surprise then, that demand for mobile access is showing an uptick, with 42% of respondents planning to upgrade to mobile-ready systems. While security system administrators benefit from increased operational efficiency, employees and visitors may find mobile access more convenient and secure since they are more likely to have their mobile devices at hand than their access cards. The pandemic also played a role in the demand for touchless physical access control.

to the pandemic, with contactless biometrics also being considered among them.

System Interoperability: Future-proof support is also a growing concern as users are pushing for long-term convenience while achieving cost savings. In fact, almost half of the respondents (49%) selected the ability to support new tech in the future as one of the top three features in a new access control solution, and 33% included integration with existing security platforms as being important. As a result, consultants and integrators are moving away from proprietary models and embracing open standards-based technology, where software upgrades can be securely managed through the cloud. One in five respondents added that interoperability and open standards will be one of the top trends set to shape the industry in the near future.

Sustainability: Organizations across all regions are making a clear effort to understand how new purchases and upgrades in access control technology can have an impact on sustainable practices, with about 28% of respondents having consulted their sustainability departments about their buying decisions. Access control readers that have Environmental Product Declarations and intelligent power management, for example, support green building ratings such as LEED. Additionally, deploying mobile access and virtual credentials removes the need for plastic cards and so spares the carbon footprint associated with their lifecycle. When integrated with a building management platform, it is possible to maintain for continuous adjustment of building resources based on occupancy.

Adria Security Summit 2022 chalks up new attendance record

Adria Security Summit 2022, the largest conference and exhibition dedicated to security and converging industries in SE Europe, closed its doors on October 6 following a two-day event that took place in the Croatian capital of Zagreb.

The organizers have reported report that this event has been the largest and the most successful one so far, continuing the upward trend that the Summit experienced since its inception.

With 2500 visitors from more than 30 countries and 136 sponsors and exhibitors, the event has not only signaled the full recovery of a whole range of industries following the pandemic but rather its potential to cover new grounds as it breaks new records. For the sake of comparison, let us recall that the last year’s event in Belgrade has seen more than 70 exhibitors and 1500 participants.

Next, a total of 48 presentations and side events, all helmed by eminent experts, touched upon every hot issue across the industries, including security, smart cities, home automation, mobility, cyber security, ICT, and IoT. Case studies also figured prominently during the event, with top-ranking presenters being handed over awards for the most innovative projects. This time, the honors went to the 1st ranked company Securitas

Croatia for its achievement in managing the projects involving perimeter protection along the Croatian borders.

The second award went to Konica Minolta for its case study of the way in which modern-day video technologies can easily extend their application and usefulness beyond security implementations, while Hikvision secured the third place for its case study of the implementation of converged technologies in the Amadria Park resort in the Croatian town of Šibenik.

To round things off, the Summit also premiered the official presentation of the trailblazing startups across industries. They were presented with appropriate awards for their achievements in this business segment which was dominated by Robotiq (1st award), Zuluhood (2nd award), and Glog (3rd award).

The organizers expressed satisfaction with the event and its attendance and thanked all participants for their part in the organization of the event on the largest scale so far. When relocation of the British Army’s Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering from Whitehill & Bordon to Wiltshire in 2015 freed up approximately 200 hectares of land, the decision was made to redevelop it to include 2,400 homes and a vibrant town centre. The opportunity to install cutting-edge technology from the outset saw the Whitehill & Bordon Regeneration Company turn to NW Security Group to design and install a comprehensive system utilising Axis technology, offering centralised management capabilities while being highly scalable to keep pace with the town’s evolution.

Simply, it means your system will remain secure, provide enough capacity for future data transfer needs and additional devices. More to the point, it protects your freedom to develop and expand your system how you want. Your reader choice has the greatest influence on the future functionality and expandability of your system. So, below, we identify factors you must consider to make the best RFID reader choice.

Secure technology In many countries, RFID’s dominant access control technology has lagged behind in so-called UID, with most cases using low frequency, 125 kHz proximity technologies.

Such technologies use nothing more than a card’s unique serial number (UID) to identify users. Since the

cards don’t protect data, they can be easily read and cloned with readilypurchased devices.

So, your obvious first task for future-proofing is to choose a secure technology. The best ones differ greatly from UID by providing highlysecure AES128 bit encryption. This leaves you vulnerable to, not just their price and product availability, but also constrained delivery times, long turnaround for service and support and whatever product development roadmap they prefer. In short, you end up being vendor-locked to a sole source.

Open or closed technology?

By contrast, open technologies subscribe to common standards.

However, they also provide an array of remarkable benefits only available in a common standard. For example, MIFARE devices from different manufacturers remain compatible with each other: a valuable benefit to purchasers. By choosing open standard MIFARE DESFire for your system, you remain free to purchase future devices from any manufacturer you prefer. You can be confident in MIFARE’s market stability even if a particular supplier can’t deliver or stops manufacturing.

There always remain other manufacturers continuing to develop

their MIFARE offering. In short: open MIFARE DESFire is more than just the most secure – but also the most reliable and cost-effective technology in the market.

Open technology vs. vendor lock – what to know about security keys Security keys and their programming are the core of a secure access control technology. Closed technology suppliers automatically deny you any security key flexibility with their readers and cards: all are factory-programmed, known only by them. Indeed, an open technology issue that often gets overlooked is that even a DESFire supplier can ultimately ‘vendor-lock’ you. How so? It is because ownership and management of your site’s security keys and their programming is often ignored. That means, before you choose your device manufacturer, you should also decide who will own and manage your security keys.

Some manufacturers will withhold your security keys if you discontinue sourcing from them. You will once again be prevented from getting compatible readers and tags despite using MIFARE DESFire for your system.

to decide who will manage their security keys, whether you or your end-user. We often manage sites’ security keys according to the latest information security practices. Equally often, however, our customers will manage security keys, program readers and cards themselves. If you have enough resources and MIFARE DESFire expertise, it can be a beneficial option. System security Although encrypting the data traveling from card to reader (as in DESFire), powerfully enhances security, traditional Wiegand lines may still create a vulnerability for your system. Why? Because Wiegand cables transferring data from readers to hosts are forced to strip away that protection. Consider carefully whether that portion of your data’s journey could be a hidden hazard to your system’s security.

OSDP is a highly secure, open standard data protocol for mediating reader-host data transfer. OSDPv2 provides robust encryption, equal to DESFire, but it also possesses other benefits. Since OSDP is a bi-directional communication protocol it also supports sending data ‘downstream’ from hosts to readers. It means you can push fast, convenient reader updates ‘downstream’ from your hosting system.

Mobile-compatibility Using a mobile phone to access doors continues to grow popular. Delivering a safer campus Safety and well-being are an important role that is taken seriously to provide reassurance and confidence to everyone accessing a university campus

niversities have a duty of care to the staff, students and public that use their facilities for work, study, and enjoyment. Campuses are unique environments to protect, thanks to the mix of facilities they offer. Their buildings are often used for diverse public, private, commercial, and educational needs.

And while some areas may be open

access, other zones may well contain highly secure laboratories, innovation hubs and research centres that necessitate stringent security measures.

This is where surveillance technology comes in. More than just monitoring cameras, a unified surveillance platform can capture data and provide insights to improve

the experience for everyone on campus. For example, it can help to better plan security patrols, improve the flow of people through areas, and even implement energy efficiency strategies.

The University of Sheffield: Making their university safer One institution familiar with the need to keep people safe is the University of Sheffield. The first objective of its Security Policy is ‘To provide a safe and secure campus that will create and maintain a feeling of safety and security for all.’ Part of the prestigious Russell Group, the university is using surveillance technology to support this important objective.

Ranked in the top 20 best universities in the UK, it uses the Synergy software platform from Synectics to integrate its surveillance as part of its continued

drive to maximise the safety and welfare of its students.

There are currently almost 30,000 students enrolled at the university.

As it grows, so has its commitment to keep students, staff and the public safe on the centrally located sites.

There are currently more than 1200 cameras across the campuses, and this number is only growing as more sites are connected.

Richard Yates, Head of Security at the University of Sheffield, said: “With 20 CCTV-trained operators, we needed a system that could be tailored to individual needs and preferences while assessing threats and risks across different sites. Ease of use was an important priority for us, so Synergy was the best option

for the university.”

Safe and secure, on campus and beyond The University of Sheffield is responsible for the welfare and safety of students, staff and visitors.

It, therefore, needed a system that was smart enough to work across all sites and give an overview in a single front-end system.

CCTV plays a vital role in highlighting and tracking incidents like theft, assault, and mental health issues. In the past year alone, it has been used in more than 350 investigations, and the Synergy upgrade could open up more opportunities.

Richard gave an example:

“Imagine we had a report of car theft on campus, but the person reporting it said the car could have been taken any time in the past week. Rather than search through seven days of footage which would use up vital time, we could go back one week to when the car was last seen, highlight it, and let Synergy track it until motion is detected. We could then share the footage with the police.”

The university uses evidence locker functionality to securely share evidence with law enforcement, and other bodies, while logging access for a full audit trail. The system can also match the evidence with information such as crime reference numbers and internal report numbers. In the past year, more than 50 incidents were authorised to be shared to South Yorkshire Police, insurers and internal groups.

Planning for the future with easy reporting Ease of reporting is one of the platform’s key strengths. The University of Sheffield is accountable to multiple stakeholders, so being able to generate reports quickly is essential. Richard encourages his team to make the most of this functionality: “Our operational 32 | October 2022 | IN SECURITY

requirements drive the budget we are allocated. The data we use to show this needs to be accurate and fit for purpose. It also needs to be presented in an easy-to-understand way and quick to collate. Perhaps more importantly, being transparent allows us to be held to account by our students and public bodies like the Information Commissioner’s Office.”

The university has a 24-hour central control room on the main campus and a second one a few miles away, which can be used during an evacuation. In addition, it voluntarily adheres to the Surveillance Camera Code of Conduct and invites a third party to audit its practices. The Synergy platform provides vital assistance during the accreditation and auditing process carried out by SSAIB (Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board).

“Being audited and accredited can only be a good thing,” said Richard. “It means we are always on the lookout for ways to develop and improve, and everyone is confident that the systems we have in place are fit for purpose and used properly.

This is increasingly important as we balance protecting students with their privacy.”

Furthering education Continual training is important to keep the university’s operators upto-date and competent and support the operators’ career progression.

According to Richard, Synectics is always on hand for training and support, which has its benefits: “We want to learn the full capabilities of our platform and see different ways of doing things.”

The university is currently implementing ‘geofencing’ in some areas, so controllers will be automatically alerted if someone enters sensitive areas like secure research facilities. It is also looking at expanding capabilities by migrating its evidence to Synectics’ Cloud Evidence Locker, a secure digital platform which provides the same auditing capabilities as those on-premises.

Setting standards Why an updated EN system standard for alarm systems is important for Europe

A

t this moment the CENELEC TC79 committee on alarm systems is looking at a revision of the EN50131-1, the European system standard for intrusion and holdup systems. Euralarm is seriously involved in the revision of the standard. Why is this standard important for Europe and what are the benefits of the revision for European citizens, alarm responders, policy makers, insurance companies and for the professional security industry?

Only one chance In order to keep Europe a safe place to live, work and travel we need to protect ourselves and our resources against burglary and robbery. Therefore, many homes and buildings are equipped with an intrusion or hold-up alarm system.

of these systems are laid down in the European standard EN 50131-1.

While the number of buildings that are equipped with such a system increased every year, the digitization of our private and business world exploded. Technology evolved and smart homes and smart building became part of our connected world where each and every device is able to communicate with each other.

Remote access, remote services, connected devices, cloud-based systems and interaction with automation system are just a few examples of today’s possibilities.

Just like fire safety systems, all security systems have one thing in common: we install them while hoping we will never need to use them. But if the system is needed ‘we only have one chance’ to detect an incident. No matter if it is a panic, holdup, fire, or intrusion we cannot afford ourselves to miss an

event. Missing an event can be the difference between no incident or a major incident. The same counts for tamper or technical problems which could lead to malfunctioning of a system. Because there is only one chance in case of an event, our industry wants to ensure that the equipment used in these systems have a maximum reliability. That is why the professional security industry already for a long time manufactures and delivers products and services that comply with the EN standards. For intrusion or hold-up alarm system this is the EN 50131-1 standard.

Long history The EN 50131 has a long history.

The first version of the system standard was published in 1997 and was updated several times since then. Other standards in the EN 50131 range followed soon. Today

the standard covers all aspects of intrusion and hold-up systems: from the system requirements to power supplies, intrusion detectors and pyrotechnic obscuration security devices. The advantage of a European standard is that it unifies the view on what an electronic intrusion and hold-up system is, as well as defines its functionalities and performance.

The standard has helped end users, insurance companies, risk managers, installation and service companies, alarm responders and local authorities across Europe to understand what a system should do.

Since the introduction in 1997 the standard has defined the difference in requirements for low, medium and high risks. This differentiation is meant to ensure that there is a balance between measures and risks.

Over the past decades, more parts were added and updated to keep the standards in line with the available technologies. To ensure a correct installation of a security system application guidelines were provided and, in most countries, professional security installers need to proof that they have the knowledge to classify

the risks, choose the correct product and install the system in the proper way. Only with these requirements the security system will offer the desired reliability and will be accepted by end users, insurance companies and police response is provided.

Confidence by compliance In order to proof that security systems and components meet the European standards, the products are tested by independent accredited laboratories. After being tested successfully the systems and components get their official EN compliant certificate. In most countries these certificates are needed to show compliance and get the product locally accepted. Some countries have additional requirements, like the PP6662 – ACPO policy in the UK or the ‘blockschloß’ functionality in Germany to meet the requirements from the local market. The confirmed compliance with the standards and technical specifications is a passport for the professional security industry in Europe and the base for

the confidence in our products and services.

Evolving technology Times are changing and technology moves forwards at high speed. More and more different types of sensors and systems become available mainly in the Do It Yourself (DIY) and IoT area. They combine home automation and energy management with intrusion, safety and security functionality. The combined functionalities are added to the ‘home hub’ to provide the end user intrusion and hold up functionality. Reporting of events is done via IP or GSM to the building owner which can cause challenges to get events transmitted on time to responders. In general, these products and services do not comply with the standards for intrusion and hold-up systems.

Meanwhile, the number of buildings that are secured in this way increases every year, while the digitization of our private and business world explodes. Technology evolves and smart homes and smart building are becoming part of our connected world where each and

every device is able to communicate with each other. Remote access, remote services, connected devices, cloud-based systems and interaction with automation system are just a few examples of today’s possibilities.

This trend towards digitization is inevitably accompanied by a risk of cyber-attacks. This evolution requires a revision of the EN 50131-1.

Significant contributions Therefore, Euralarm took the initiative in 2020 to organize an open round-table to describe its vision on the future of the security standard.

The outcome of the round-table discussion was that the standard should address a set of components complemented by a proposal bringing some nuance to the original 2 options. These outcomes have been presented to the working group in charge of this revision. Another significant contribution has been the proposal for the structure of the revised standard based on the 40 | October 2022 | IN SECURITY

5 essential functions of an intruder and hold-up alarm system (detection, control and indication, notification, power supply and interaction with other systems) and considering the 4 performance aspects: effectiveness, reliability, robustness and resilience.

Very recently, Euralarm fed the standardisation working group with substantial proposals for drawings depicting the boundaries of the system and a style for writing the content of the new standard.

Call upon stakeholders Going forwards Euralarm wants to ensure that the updated standards on one side include the use of new technologies and on the other side continue to ensure that the product, installation and services meet a set of functionalities and qualities and perform as expected in case of an event. This will give users the best insurance that their system works as they expect and that it does not miss any events. Euralarm also believes

that the revision will have significant impact on the other standards and therefore suggest to establish, when achievable, a roadmap for the corresponding revision of these other standards. In particular, the revision of the EN 50131 product standards should be refrained until the content of the revised EN 50131-1 is stabilised.

Euralarm calls upon all stakeholders - insurance companies, risk managers, installation and service companies, alarm responders and local authorities - to join the work from Euralarm and its members and participate in the different working groups from TC79. Together with stakeholders on European or on national level we can keep Europe a safe and secure place to live, work and travel.

ssan Port, İskenderun, was established in June 2010 by Assan Liman İşletmeleri A.Ş., one of the Kibar Group companies.

It was the first dedicated container terminal in the Gulf of Iskenderun and caters to international container shipping companies (general cargo ships, project cargo ships, and

dry bulk carriers) with an annual established capacity of 250,000 TEU (Twenty Equipment Unit). Assan Port’s leadership is aiming to reach a capacity of 400,000 TEU with new investments.

The Port is the only container terminal that connects Northern Iraq to the West, as well as serving companies in the Eastern

Mediterranean, South-eastern Anatolia, and the south of Central Anatolia. Therefore, its seamless operations and security are of utmost importance to the region. Assan Port provides port security in accordance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS).

Modernising security The Port’s security operations were hindered by an old CCTV system that wasn’t flexible or detailed enough for operators to fully understand what was happening on-site. Assan Port’s security identified a need to improve security efficiency and situational awareness, to effectively protect the Port’s ships, equipment, shipyards, and containers. The system had to combat a range of threats including theft, vandalism and sabotage, trespassing, and terrorism.

Fast, accurate and cost effective The Q Series cameras - of which 110 have been installed at the site - feature Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), which performs at up to 120dB to produce clear images from scenes containing a challenging mix of bright and dark areas. The devices support Power over Ethernet (PoE), which saves time and reduces installation costs, as it negates the need to run separate cabling and install a power supply at each camera location. This makes it a cost-effective and fast solution to install across the Port. There is also the option to store video and data at the edge via an SD/SDHC/ SDXC memory slot, so if there is any disruption to the network, video evidence is not lost.

State-of-the-art The entire system was replaced with Wisenet devices, including over 177 Wisenet Q Series cameras and three Wisenet X PTZ PLUS cameras. The team also invested in the 64-channel XRN6410DB4 NVR, which is equipped with a dual switched-mode power supply that ensures continuity of recording for mission-critical applications. Moreover, the NVRs are able to read AI metadata, enabling operators to quickly and accurately search video for objects and attributes associated to them.

The Wisenet X PTZ PLUS range enables users to capture evidence-grade images of activity occurring in large open area applications. This makes it ideal for monitoring the large Assan Port shipyard to capture high-quality images of objects up to a distance of 200 metres in all lighting conditions. The range also comes with an AI auto-tracking feature which allows control room operators to efficiently monitor the movement of objects whilst remaining hands-free to control other cameras. 24/7 monitoring With the new Wisenet solution, security team members are able to monitor the shipyard and its assets 24/7 both on-site and remotely. They can also view live and recorded video via smart tablets — which enables them to continue monitoring the Port and investigate events while moving around the site.

Future plans The team plans to install Wisenet cameras across three different locations with all video footage and data being monitored from one central control room.

Assan Port’s leadership team is looking for more efficient ways to increase its load capacity while maintaining the same level of service and without adding a significant headcount. The efficiency and scalability of the Wisenet system is supporting them in meeting this goal.
