Building users and managers need the reassurance of secure access to go about their working day productively and with peace of mind. The Keyholding Company launches physical security risk management software A new, cloud-based approach delivers rapid digital risk assessments and data analysis that helps clients reduce spend without compromising protection.

The Keyholding Company (TKC) are tech-enabled security specialists, passionate about raising the bar on effective security management. Mitie Security works with the National Portrait Gallery to provide a safer and more secure space for visitors in Central London

Safe Havens are a part of the collective effort to address the issue of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) from the Safer Business Network, in partnership with the Police, Councils, the Security Industry Authority (SIA), City Security Council (CSC), City Property Association (CPA) and the wider business community.

Each Safe Haven is required to display the Safe Haven logo, use CCTV and have the ability to offer access to water, a telephone and charging point.

Whilst the scheme has been designed specifically around the safety of women and girls, Safe Havens can support anyone who may feel vulnerable. The Mitie Security team, working at the National Portrait Gallery, have received specialist Welfare And Vulnerability Engagement (WAVE) training to recognise vulnerable people in and outside the venue who may be in need of support.

At the National Portrait Gallery, as with other venues which it has helped to become Safe Havens, Mitie has played a key role alongside representatives from the Safer Business Network in training employees in a ‘Train the Trainer’ initiative, enabling those who complete the training with Mitie to then pass on these skills to their own teams. Learners are taught about what a Safe Haven is, how to spot signs of vulnerability and how to assist ‘users’ of Safe Havens. Mitie also coordinates feedback and examples of best practice from each Safe Haven to help continuously improve the initiative.

To support this work, Mitie and the National Portrait Gallery have also introduced ‘Ask for Angela’ to protect individuals if they feel at risk of danger, unsafe or vulnerable in the Gallery’s building. By approaching a

member of staff and ‘asking for Angela’, individuals can subtly signal their request for support. In line with the City Security Council’s ongoing commitment to improve safety across London, the National Portrait Gallery has also signed up to the Women’s Night Safety Charter.

Jason Towse, Managing Director, Business Services, Mitie, said: “Preventing violence against women and girls, or in fact any vulnerable person, is a responsibility we all share. I am proud that through our work with the National Portrait Gallery we are providing the expertise and skills that will allow this cultural landmark to provide a temporary safe space for those who need support.

“80% of women have been harassed in public and there are 1.5 million cases of stalking on average each year, so it is vital that we have accessible safe havens that promote and prioritise safety,. By opening our doors and equipping colleagues with the right training and skills, we can all help prevent serious crimes or even save a life.”

As one of the largest suppliers of physical security systems in the UK, CLD offer tailored, trusted and durable security solutions to protect environments such as data centres, schools, transport hubs, manufacturing warehouses, high-profile sporting venues, open spaces, and Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) sites.

The acquisition will fast track CLD’s growth aspirations as a global market leader in physical security products and further the company’s strategic goal of offering a complete suite of Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) products, in house auto access products and increase CLD’s service and maintenance offering.

Cova is the world’s first designer & manufacturer of the crash rated trackless bi-folding gate, with three decades of experience in the HVM sector. The company has over 14 crash rated solutions in its portfolio and is regarded as best in class on many fronts. With a 30,000sqft Cova factory on the outskirts of London with nearly 50 staff, this acquisition will prove highly beneficial to CLD clients across many sectors, including critical national infrastructure.

Latest AI video guidance will help buyers invest with confidence, says IDIS Opportunities for deep learning powered video analytics are increasing, while users prefer risk-free adoption routes, says new report New guidance on AI-powered video technology will help systems integrators and their customers invest with confidence, says IDIS, South Korea’s largest in-country video manufacturer.

There are more ways than ever to use AI in surveillance operations, but with these opportunities come risks says the company in a new report. Buyer concerns include over-spending on equipment and associated infrastructure that fails to live up to expectations, becoming trapped with inflexible software or product dead-ends, or getting tied into unfavourable contracts.

The new publication, The Value and Benefits of End-to-End AI Video, explores the key capabilities and benefits of the latest solutions, while highlighting a number of pitfalls to avoid.

The most widely used video analytics functions, becoming common in sectors from retail and logistics to hospitality and manufacturing, include people counting; occupancy monitoring; object detection; line crossing; heat maps (showing activity patterns in specific locations); face detection; and alerts based on configured trigger events. The IDIS report highlights examples where AI video applications are replacing manual monitoring, collection, and analysis of data, saving costs, and improving accuracy.

with clean/soiled linen delivered/ collected at customer sites. It now provides detailed end-to-end tracking of linen cages across multiple customer locations throughout the whole cycle of washing, packing, delivery and collection—a complex process given 550,000 pieces are laundered each week for numerous clients.

Founded in 1915, Royal Jersey Laundry is one of the few cleaners servicing the luxury hotel sector.

Based in a 25,000 square foot purpose-built facility in Dagenham—

rebuilt in 2021 at a cost of £15 million after a fire—it works with most five-star hotels in London including The Dorchester, The Carlton Tower Jumerah, The Peninsula London, and The Ritz.

Supporting the five-star segment is demanding given the constant communication required between hotel and laundry, exacting standards, and the quantity and range of items to be laundered. This includes duvets, sheets, towels, and bath robes along with smaller items such as foot mats, drink coasters,

shaving towels, and dry cleaning for guests themselves. Royal Jersey Laundry operates 24/7, employs 150 staff members, and washes 40 tons of linen per day.

In contrast with budget and mid-level hotels, five-star hotels prefer to use linen they own with five sets kept of everything, allowing them to maintain a rigorous laundering schedule and ensure guests always receive fresh, cleaned linens. “An average 300 bed hotel will have around 30,000 items of linen which will cost around £250,000,” says James Lincoln, Royal Jersey Laundry’s managing director. “The volume of linen is so high and it’s always moving such that accurate inventory control was a major challenge verging on the impossible.”

Prior to the HID cloud-based RFID linen management system, everything was done manually.

Laundry staff would check items off ironing/folding machines–a wholly error-prone process–and log the quantities on pieces of paper.

The operational overhead for the laundry was exacerbated as the various linen items from the different hotels had to be kept separate, too. “Linen is everywhere: on beds, in cupboards, in transit and at the laundry—yet no one had full insight into stock levels and, when things went missing—which often happened—typically we’d get blamed,” says Lincoln.

To address these problems, Royal Jersey Laundry installed a real-time linen inventory management system from HID combining LinTRAK® RFID tags, a full set of RFID equipment including table-top and conveyor-belt scanners, one RFID portal and one cabin scanning unit, and cloud-based Acuity software.

The discrete LinTRAK tags are sewn into linen items by laundry staff or by linen manufacturers at the production process. Some hotels also use LinTRAK tags to manage staff uniforms and restaurant linens such as napkins and tablecloths.

Around 40% of Royal Jersey

Laundry hotel customers have transitioned to the HID linen management solution and connect via Acuity’s web portal. Once cleaned, the linen is packed into cages, and scanned in seconds through HID’s RFID cabin station. Items are automatically counted, with delivery notes generated including billing information. HID’s Acuity software

integrates with the laundry’s Sage accounting software to generate invoices.

Furthermore, digital scanning results in faster processing of items. “We’re effectively two businesses: the laundry itself and a logistics operation. We run a mixed fleet of lorries and electric vans which nip in and out of London three times day picking up and delivering garments for hotel customers using us for guest work,” adds Lincoln.

Net2 is Paxton’s flagship access control system that provides a scalable, feature-rich solution that can integrate easily with many other leading security products. The international security technology manufacturer, Paxton, has nearly 40 years of experience and has always strived to develop access control

products that are simple to install and use.

Requirement Nicol Corner is a 11-storey mixed-use commercial building and has approximately 22,000 m² floor area. It is estimated to have hundreds of people entering the building daily. The security requirements stipulated that the building managers needed an access control system that can manage hundreds of doors with frequent

footfall and is scalable to expand when needed.

Other requirements included lift destination control to tailor access permissions to the office area, public access gym, the car park, and the restaurant. Furthermore, boom gates and an ANPR system were needed for parking entrances to streamline access for employees and visitors.

The new access control system also needed to have the ability to integrate turnstiles and customer account management software for the top-rated fitness centre.

All of these requirements needed to be communicated and configured via an IP network, so the system administrators can remotely manage the site.

Solution Net2 was recommended to the building manager at Nicol Corner due to its simplicity and ability to meet all requirements in the original brief. Intellisec was the security installation company that collaborated on the building project to provide the hardware installation while Nicol Corner’s IT technician configured the Net2 system according to their specific needs.

I was able to configure the access with no official training. I just looked at the technical documentation on Paxton’s website which has so far solved every question I have had.”

Net2 software offers centralised administration and management of sites with up to 1,000 doors and 50,000 users. It is also designed to easily integrate with many security systems, so end-users can enjoy more streamlined security for their building.

Due to Nicol Corner’s multipurpose commercial use, it not only has employees coming and going,

but also external gym members and visitors to the award-winning public facing restaurant. This means that lift destination control is important at Nicol Corner to ensure people are only given access to the floors they have permission to.

The Net2 system has been integrated with KONE Lift Destination Control System. Kevin explains: “We worked with Intreba to develop a specific software solution, which has been integrated with Net2, to enable direct communication with the KONE system.”

are verified in the Net2 system, the central lift system screen will only show the floors they have permission to access, and they will be able to choose a floor based on their Net2 security clearance.

The building’s fifth and sixth floors are occupied by the six-star gym. Turnstiles have been installed at the entrance and integrated into Net2 to manage access for Nicol Corner’s employees who can enjoy the facility as a benefit and manage access of public gym members.

Salesforce, customer relationship management software, was integrated into the Net2 system.

This allows the gym reception team to add or delete gym member accounts using the Salesforce software without needing to access the Net2 software directly, preserving overall building security.

ANPR cameras have been integrated at all boom gates on the perimeter of the parking area to help speed up traffic flow and minimise bottlenecks for employees during peak hours. However, visitors are required to register at the gate to be issued a temporary token.

Nicol Corner’s system utilises Net2 Pro software to benefit from a wider range of features and benefits.

One of them is the Net2Online web user interface, which allows remote management of the system.

Kevin said: “The online user interface is very intuitive to use. We have also been taking advantage of the Paxton Connect app to give us remote access management from a smartphone or tablet. This saves me time from traveling to site when needing to manage users or react to

an emergency.”

Result Since the original installation four years ago, Kevin, with the support from Paxton’s expert product team, has expanded the Net2 system at least five times. These expansions included adding an extra floor to the system which subsequently introduced 21 additional doors, meaning Net2 currently secures 218 doors at Nicol Corner.

Kevin concludes: “We will work with Paxton again and definitely recommend Net2 to anyone needing an advanced security system with bespoke integrations to suit their individual business model.”

Managing geopolitical risk Geopolitical risk is fastest-rising danger to corporate security

G

eopolitical threats now represent the fastest-growing risk to the security and resilience of businesses, overtaking the likes of post 9/11 threats such as terrorism, according to a new report.

Factors including US-China relations, Russian regional activity, Middle East tensions and war and conflict are all cited as specific threats contributing to the increase in the geopolitical risk. Geopolitical factors can impact everything from supply chains and operational resilience to personnel security and new market entry and exit, the report says.

of Corporate Security – compiled by surveying senior business leaders including CEOs, Chief Operating Officers and Chief Security Officers (CSOs) from leading multinational corporations – is published by The Clarity Factory, a company specialising in corporate security, cybersecurity and resilience .

Key findings include: • Asked to rank the three biggest security risks faced by their organisation, cybersecurity ranks highest (named by 53% of respondents), closely followed by geopolitical risk (51%) and insider risk (40%).

• 88% of respondents say

geopolitical risk has increased, compared to just 12% saying it had stayed the same or decreased, while 81% of respondents say the cybersecurity threat has increased.

• Other risks which the majority of respondents said are increasing rather than decreasing or staying the same are: extreme weather and environmental events (67% of respondents), civil unrest (66%), travel risk (63%), climate crisis (57%) and activism (57%).

A significant minority (14%) of CSOs cite the climate crisis as a top-three security risk for their company.

• Risks that dominated post

9/11 like terrorism, and more traditional security risks such as kidnap or extortion, are becoming less of a threat for most companies – 88% of respondents say the risk of terrorism has decreased or stayed the same, and 84% say the same for kidnap and extortion.

• Most corporate security functions do not have responsibility or accountability for cybersecurity, even though ever-closer involvement is essential given the interdependencies between the two. Just over half (58%) of CSOs agreed that effective security risk management relies on corporate/physical security and cybersecurity converging into a single function, but only 15% of CSOs surveyed reported having accountability or responsibility for cybersecurity.

• The report was undertaken to understand what trends in the global business operating environment mean for the corporate security function including its value proposition, areas of responsibility and relationship to the rest of the business. The project was sponsored by AstraZeneca, Barclays, CRH, Holcim, ICF, Johnson Matthey, Proman AG, Shell, Sibylline and Sky. Rachel Briggs, CEO of the Clarity

Factory, and author of the report, said: “In a global business environment characterised by volatility and increased security risks, effective corporate security is non-negotiable for commercial success.

“Geopolitics is firmly back on the agenda and was ranked by business leaders interviewed for this report as the most important security risk facing their respective companies. Companies are grappling with heightened tensions in the Middle East, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, China’s influence in its near neighbourhood as well as Africa and the Middle East. With the highest levels of political risk and unrest for five years, business leaders face the effect of geopolitics on everything from supply chains and operational resilience to personnel security and new market entry or exit.

“However, in a more difficult business environment, growth requires companies to be able to identify opportunities and lean into more risk. Multinational corporations are now dealing with multiple risks concurrently, so business leaders increasingly need more nuanced insight to calibrate the risks they take, need trusted advisors willing to speak up when something is a risk too far, and require highly effective crisis management capability.

The corporate security function is therefore now more than ever.”

Other findings of the report include: • Multinational corporations are increasingly impacted by a range of social changes that affect their risk profile and require input from corporate security. There is growing pressure on companies to not just do their business fairly and ethically, but to take an active stance on political and social issues, whether directly linked to their business or not. This can make companies and their staff a target for attack – 11% of CSOs surveyed say activism is one of the three biggest security risks for their organisation, and a majority (57%) say it is increasing.

• There is also growing expectation for CEOs to be the face of such public positions – 81% of investors globally say CEOs should be personally visible when discussing public policy with external stakeholders. This can increase the CEO’s risk profile, and one-third (32%) of CSOs surveyed say threats to senior company executives have increased over the past 2–3 years.

• The three biggest obstacles to the effectiveness of corporate security are identified as insufficient budget (44% of respondents), insufficient integration with senior executives (38%) and having to report too far down the chain of command (31%).

• Some CSOs reported diminishing support from law enforcement,

which cannot match the capability of threat actors, finds information sharing difficult due to regulation and shifting geopolitical alliances, and has increasingly stretched resources.

The report highlights five critical ways in which corporate security is a business enabler that contributes to commercial success for today’s multinational corporations.

1. Corporate security is nonnegotiable for commercial success. In a volatile, complex, high-risk operating environment, where security risks are rising, effective corporate security is nonnegotiable, keeping the company safe and enabling business leaders to lean further into risk.

2. Corporate security is an integrator that promotes a unified view of risk. Corporate security tends to be one of the company’s most effective integrators. CSOs are leading efforts to promote collaboration across risk functions to provide executives with a more unified view of risk. Their function contributes across the value chain: as connected specialists, valued interlocutors on activities such as mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and new market entry or exit, and as the company’s complex problem solver of first choice.

offers insight to enhance business decision-making. Companies that can harness data from across the value chain – including operations, the supply chain, corporate security, business intelligence, and cyber security – will tend to generate nuanced insights to drive better business decisions, allowing executives to lean into risk with greater confidence.

4. Corporate security’s external networks provide insight, support and an early-warning system.

At a time when multinational corporations increasingly place a premium on external networks, business leaders interviewed for the report acknowledged the importance of corporate security’s external network. It not only delivers security outcomes, it helps leaders to understand what geopolitical trends mean for the company, offers insight, benchmarking and support, and acts as an early warning system.

Effective corporate security functions invest in their networks, public–private partnerships, and membership organisations that support professional development, benchmarking and information sharing.

5. Corporate security’s crisis management expertise is business critical and can be used to enhance crisis leadership

competency across the business.

Corporate security functions are at the heart of their company’s crisis management capability. As well as applying these skills in response to group-wide crises, CSOs can put them to wider use to enhance crisis leadership capability across the organisation; to help leaders distinguish between an incident and a crisis, use crisis management procedures to help the business to make quicker decisions, and coach and mentor to develop executive crisis leadership talent.

Ms Briggs added: “In the age of what has been termed ‘polycrisis’ – the simultaneous occurrence of several catastrophic events – crisis management is a business-critical activity.

“Many companies face a higher volume of crises that are more interconnected: extreme weather events, conflict, market volatility, reputational crises, geopolitical events and cyber-attacks, for example. For those used to operating in high-risk environments, this might not feel new, but for others, it requires a structural and cultural shift. Corporate security functions are often at the heart of a company’s crisis management capability.”

Keeping Seznam data centres secure and online Protecting data centres for a leading Czechian internet provider with cyber-resilient video solutions

eznam, also known as Seznam.cz, is one of the largest internet providers and search engines in Czechia. It operates more than 25 different services under associated brands including email, search, advertising, a contact directory and an app, with millions of unique visitors per month. To provide

these services it operates two data centres; Nagoja, which takes up an area of approximately 1,200 square metres, and Kokura, which has recently been expanded with a new data hall.

Cyber-resilient, AI-powered cameras Hanwha Vision cameras replaced existing CCTV infrastructure in

Kokura, which had been installed in 2013 and required an upgrade to provide a more seamless, consistent experience for operators. The new data hall, along with Nagoja, uses Hanwha Vision devices including XNF-8010RV, XNO-8080R and XNOC9083R cameras, which come with AI video analytics. The choice of Hanwha Vision was based on successful

implementation of its cameras in past Seznam data centres, along with its proven cybersecurity credentials, AI analytics, and the ability to integrate with current infrastructure and be rolled-out in phases.

Covering a wide, high-risk area With two data halls in each data centre location comprising 200 racks, operators need to maintain vigilance over a wide, potentially busy area

that contains sensitive data that demands robust protection. To do so, 121 cameras were installed at Nagoja and 84 in Kokura, where a central control room is situated to manage the entire estate. The cameras support perimeter protection for greater security.

The power of video AI analytics Given the potential financial and reputational costs of a data

breach, it’s essential that Seznam’s data centres are fully protected at all times. This means using cyber-resilient video cameras that reduce the risk of a breach as far as possible. Likewise, operational continuity is crucial, so operators need to be able to respond swiftly to any emergencies such as potential fire or flooding. AI analytics in the systems are employed to reduce false alarms, allowing operators to

respond to only those events that require their attention, and reducing fatigue from false alarms caused by wildlife, tree branches moving in the wind, and other events that do not merit action, but cause distraction.

Flickering lights from servers in data centres can also trigger false alarms - something that AI cameras can reduce.

The XNF-8010RV features loitering detection, people counting and queue management to support access control into the data centres. It also has audio detection and sound classification to alert operators to shouting, screaming, glass breaking, and more. Similarly, the XNO-C9083R features accurate object detection and classification to reduce false alarms, along with effective forensic search to help operators find relevant footage for investigations. Operators can monitor inside the data centres plus outside the buildings — to monitor people as they enter and exit the area, and ensure that no unauthorised individuals enter restricted areas.

Ensuring no cybersecurity vulnerabilities Data centres can be attractive targets for malicious actors, so reducing potential vulnerabilities in their CCTV infrastructure is vital.
