Energy-efficient access Technologies, strategies and support for more effective green building specification

B

uildings consume around 30% of the world’s energy1.

One sometimes overlooked contributor is the security and access management system. Traditional wired solutions which rely on mains electricity can be surprisingly power-hungry, impacting sustainability performance.

Specifiers increasingly turn to digital solutions powered by batteries or energy-harvesting technology to help clients including building owners and facilities managers to manage their access more efficiently.

Green building design and specification, including for these security solutions, help the construction industry to address the issue of energy consumption and improve buildings’ environmental performance. The right access solution offers benefits at every stage of the building life-cycle – from commissioning and construction to

ongoing maintenance.

In addition, the returns on investing in greener buildings can benefit more than just the environment and business reputation. According to property experts JLL, “buildings with better sustainability credentials are achieving markedly higher capital values and rents”. They estimated improvements of 20.6% and 11.6%, respectively, in one analysis of BREEAM-certified premises for the UK office sector2.

Energy-efficient access and security management As part of the overall specification process for new-builds and retrofit projects, security solutions can make an important contribution to improving sustainability and energy efficiency metrics.

A digital access system combined with intelligent door closers, for

example, ensures reliable, tight door closing while at the same time, maintaining barrier-free access to and through the premises. Inside a building, a closed door helps to maintain temperature differentials — between an occupied office and the corridor, for example, or a server room and a glass atrium. Fully closed interior doors also reduce stack pressure, unwanted inward airflow on the ground floor which is caused by rising warm air inside the building.

Digital access offers a way to monitor and change the status of many doors through a site, of course, in the process benefitting both security and sustainability.

However, not every solution makes an overall positive impact.

Their energy-efficiency performance can vary widely. A traditional wired access control system, for example, brings its own challenge: These

systems can be energy hungry. A more effective, efficient solution may be offered by choosing wireless, as one recent project in Dubai demonstrated3.

The next digital evolution: energy harvesting technology Another innovation promises even lower power consumption at the door: energy harvesting. Digital access which is self-powered by energy-harvesting technology consumes no energy during the electronic interaction between user and door. It generates its own.

Energy harvesting is a familiar technology for designers of smart buildings. It is widely used in building sensors. Its application to security now removes energy use at an access point altogether when it is equipped with the right digital lock. With smart key-based electronic access control based on this technology, for example, lock electronics harvest energy from the thrust and/or turning of a key.

Kinetic energy from the keyholder powers communication between credential, device and the digital access system.

Such “self-powered” digital locks do not require batteries or cables — or indeed, any external electricity source. These energy-harvesting solutions combine the familiarity and convenience of key operation with the intelligence and flexibility of digital

access control. They put facilities managers in command of their premises without the disruption or energy use of traditional wired doors.

At a new residential development in Denmark, an ASSA ABLOY smart key-operated solution powered by energy-harvesting technology now secures more than 300 apartments: “We went for a future-proof solution which was maintenance-free and where we did not have to change batteries,” explains Peter Høpfner, COO and Founder of A Place To, Esbjerg.

Such innovations give organizations additional options when seeking a more energy- and cost-efficient way to secure a site and manage user access. Both batterypowered door devices and smart keys with energy-harvesting locks consume much less energy than equivalent wired solutions powered by mains electricity.

Growing importance for EPDs The most authoritative way to gauge the impact of a product over its life-cycle is with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). An EPD offers a detailed assessment of a product based on careful study of its life-cycle; a complete mapping of its footprint from raw material, through manufacturing, logistics and impact during use, to end-of-life recycling.

Thus, product-specific EPDs help architects, specifiers, contractors,

developers, green building scheme assessors and housing providers to make accurate forecasts about both embodied carbon and finished building performance. From 2026, a declaration of the results from an EPD must be part of the CE Marking process – and therefore, essential to sell a product or solution to the European market.

EPDs fill a knowledge gap which is crucial to commissioning nearly zero-energy buildings (NZEBs) and to realising the goal of a smarter, more sustainable built environment. For these reasons, many projects already require an EPD to specify a product or solution, well ahead of the new European regulations.

The use of EPDs has grown quickly in the commercial sector, as operators seek granular detail about their building and energy use.

Full implementation of the revised European Performance of Buildings Directive, from 2026, will enforce them in the residential sector, too.

From 2027, the same regulation requires all new-builds to declare total whole-life carbon, including embodied carbon. The same requirement will apply to renovations from 2030.

Critically for green building specification, EPDs also contribute points towards certifications such as BREEAM and LEED, increasingly prized by both developers and their tenants. Each EPD helps stakeholders

to make an informed, transparent choice based on authoritative impact assessments. Their detail helps customers to better understand a product’s impact across its life-cycle.

Within a single document, the EPD equips specifiers with the information they need. With expert help from a trusted partner, they can put this information to work by securing their desired green building certification.

Hanwha Vision launches Dual-Lens Barcode Reader Camera for logistics in industry first Hanwha Vision, the global vision solution provider, has unveiled the Dual-Lens Barcode Reader Camera, with models TNS-9040IBC, TNS-9050IBC and TNS-9060IBC, to combine barcode recognition and video capture in one device. In combination with the Vision Logistics Tracking Software, barcodes and video are provided in real-time to enhance inventory management, traceability and incident investigation, reducing shipping errors, returns, and ultimately boosting customer satisfaction.

A first for logistics The Barcode Reader Camera utilises accurate barcode recognition, for multiple parcels in one frame, and tracking. AI-powered barcode label detection on the monochrome channel, including for high-speed conveyors, enables operators to find labels efficiently and with ease. The solution also includes WiseBCR, a pre-installed barcode application that supports real-time barcode information and history.

check location, time and footage details of parcels and events in a single system instead of using separate systems. Furthermore, the device is highly durable with protection against dust, shock and vibration thanks to IP66/67 and IK10 ratings and M12 connectors.

The complete logistics solution The Barcode Reader Camera forms the foundation of a comprehensive logistics solution, in combination with Hanwha Vision software and hardware solutions. Aesthetic access control Enhancing security and convenience at Beau Vie II student accommodation with Paxton’s Access Control and Video Management Solution

eau Vie II is a student apartment block located at Banghoek Road, Cape Town.

It opened in early 2024 and is only a 10-minute walk from the University of Stellenbosch, providing students with modern and convenient accommodation.

for the development of the highquality student accommodation. They wanted a high-security, intuitive, and aesthetic access control and security solution. Patron worked with Remote Entry Systems, an experienced security installation company who specified Paxton’s product range.

Paxton, the international security

technology company, designs and develops access control systems, video intercom products, IP cameras, and wireless door handles that are used all over the world.

Requirement The requirements for the Beau Vie II building were clear from

the beginning. Biometric readers were required to increase building security through verifying users via fingerprint or facial recognition.

The site also required IP cameras to ensure real-time video access and footage capture, and an intercom system to allow ease of visitor access. Simple remote system management was also one of the top requirements.

Solution Morné Mellet, Technical Systems Specialist at Remote Entry Systems, presented five security installation designs to Patron, which included Paxton’s Net2 and Paxton10 systems.

Patron chose Paxton10 due to its web-based software that allows for remote management and the ability for users to use their smart devices to gain access through doors.

Paxton10 is an online access control and video management solution that can manage up to 100 sites with up to 1,000 doors, 1,000 cameras, and 50,000 users.

Morné said: “In addition to Paxton10’s features meeting the requirements per Beau Vie II, the cabling and labour costs required for installing and configuring Paxton products were lower than the other brands, helping to reduce the overall project costs for the client.”

An add-on benefit of choosing Paxton10 for this building is that it is fully campatible with the other product ranges that the manufacturer offers, including Paxton10 cameras, video intercom system, Entry, and smart door handle, PaxLock.

Morné said: “Compared to other access control systems I have worked with over the last 13 years, Paxton10 was the only all-in-one solution that ticked all the boxes for this building. The ease of bringing all the necessary components online and that Paxton10 is compatible with Entry and PaxLock is extremely user-friendly.”

Paxton10 readers are installed on doors in the car park and communal areas in the building, and wireless door handles PaxLock are installed on each apartment unit door. Using them alongside Paxton10 software means the readers and PaxLocks offer free smart credentials through the Paxton Key app, which allows users to gain access to doors using

their smartphones or smartwatches.

To provide an additional level of security, system administrator can add extra authenitication on access points, requiring users to unlock their device prior to access granted.

This met the original requirement for biometric readers.

Morné said: “The smart credential is a major plus point for the client and the residents. At first all the residents used the traditional keyfobs, but then one by one they requested the smart credentials after seeing other people using their phones instead.

“Currently about 90% of the residents are only using their phones as keys!”

An Entry panel, Paxton’s video intercom system, is installed at the building’s entrance, and Entry monitors are installed on each apartment. This allows visitors to call the unit that they are visiting, and the residents can verify the visitors’

identities via the video call and grant access from their apartment.

As the Entry system is compatible with Paxton10, it also provides a smart credential access option at the entrance for residents.

To further increase building security, Paxton’s own range of IP cameras are installed in the car park and throughout the building, making sure every apartment front door is in field of view in case of an emergency. The Paxton10 cameras are plug-and-play and designed to work seamlessly with Paxton10.

Morné manages the Paxton10 system for the building, and its online software allows remote management of users, doors, and cameras, giving Morné absolute convenience.

Morné said: “Being able to remotely manage the system is highly efficient and time saving.

I have had a few instances when the client asked me to open doors for maintenance contractors, or

residents who accidentally locked themselves out of their rooms.

“I was also able to visually verify the resident’s identity for security reasons, from the real-time video footage in Paxton10 before I open the doors for them.”

Result Since the opening of the building in early 2024, Patron is happy with Paxton10 and Morné’s assistance in managing the system.

inancial losses resulting from unwanted and unauthorised site intrusion are a reality for every sector that relies on remote infrastructure or assets. The response must be a targeted investment in proven methods for intrusion deterrence and detection.

However, this cannot be approached in a piecemeal fashion. Before even thinking about solutions, it is vital to assess the risks themselves. Where are they greatest? How are they

evolving? And how can they best be eradicated?

Current Crime Trends – Targets & Methods At DeterTech we operate a crime intelligence database for the police and critical infrastructure companies, tracking developments in crime trends across the UK. Our data on the volume and types of incidents reported to our Crime Intelligence function provides useful initial insights that can help security professionals to make informed

decisions on how to best allocate the available resources.

Of particular importance is the fluctuating price of copper. Earlier this year, copper was priced at over $10,000/tonne which was the highest it had been in over 2 years. As the price of scrap copper increases, so does the potential reward that offenders will get for their stolen cable This has driven up the rate of theft of copper and cable, as offenders have become aware of the higher rewards that they can reap from stealing such items.

There have been some very serious and organised thefts of cable that have impacted critical infrastructure over the past couple of months, and in some offences, more than 1km of cable has been stolen. Whilst the cost to replace the cable can be significant, it is both the cost of the disruption to services to the local community as well as the potential harm that can be caused by unsafe cable that is more worrying. However, it is hoped that some significant recent arrests will help to curb the level of offending, particularly whilst the scrap price of copper is projected to remain high.

The scrap price of lead has also been increasing in recent months.

Offenders who target lead can vary from the local offenders to the highly organised and it is feared that as the price of lead increases, more organised criminality will be attracted to this crime type.

Churches, schools and other buildings should remain vigilant to anyone trespassing on their property, particularly at night time, and should not leave any ladders or scaffolding nearby as this will aid offenders to gain access to the roof.

Also, forensically marking lead and displaying highly visible deterrent signage around the property are some of the security measures that should be considered to deter this

type of criminality.

Turning to the construction industry, we have also noted a high level of reported fuel thefts in recent months; this is generally a seasonal trend over winter months and 2023 to 2024 has been no exception.

Thefts from plant and machinery, fuel bowsers and generators remain common, where offenders have been known to siphon over 1000l of fuel in a matter of minutes.

Furthermore, survey equipment is a category that deserves its own dedicated security protocols as it is being very deliberately targeted as a highly portable asset that commands a high price on the black market.

Ideally, survey equipment would never be left unattended while in use on site, would never be left on open display in transit and would only ever be stored in a discreet and secure location. Access should be closely audited and limited only to those with legitimate reasons for requiring it.

Finally, it should not be assumed that all thefts are being instigated out-of-hours. In fact, offenders are frequently targeting sites in the middle of the day, wearing high-vis jackets and other PPE to blend in and appear legitimate. A fluorescent jacket sadly functions as the ultimate camouflage on a construction site.

Staff must be consistently trained to be vigilant and to report anything

suspicious.

The Importance of Deterrence and Detection There are a whole range of measures that can and should be taken before the best forms of intruder deterrence and detection can even be determined. There is no one silver bullet security measure as each individual site carries its own inherent vulnerabilities and risks.

For example, a small temporary site in a busy city centre will likely benefit from the nearby presence of local authority CCTV and higher footfall, making it harder for criminals to linger in the vicinity without it immediately looking suspicious. Plus, police will likely be able to respond quickly when called. However, the site’s compact size and the need not to disrupt the public may throw up limitations in terms of the physical barriers and other security solutions that can be deployed in such a small area.

Meanwhile, a large remote site such as a solar farm may be more at risk of a severe night-time raid, with criminals able to covertly stake out possible access points to the site during the day before returning under the cover of darkness.

Organisations are therefore advised to work with an end-to-end security provider to audit each site

and develop a bespoke security plan specific to the identified risks at each location. Though every site is different, here is a breakdown of deterrent and detection-based methodologies and technologies that should feature in an organisation’s site security strategy.

Incident Reporting & Monitoring Some organised crime gangs are predictable in their behaviour, and we often witness a successful MO repeated consistently until others in the industry get wise to it. Keeping an ear to the ground for incidents at sites like you, or in your immediate vicinity, is therefore highly beneficial in refining your strategy. Formally reporting all incidents also helps police and industry to get wise to vulnerabilities faster, which benefits everybody.

For example, last year Operation Dastardly, led by Lincolnshire Police, successfully resulted in the prosecution of a trio of thieves who were charged with 47 church lead theft offences across 10 counties. A list of the churches most likely to be targeted next could be established with a reasonable degree of certainty simply by considering their similarity to previous targets and their geographic location.

Physical deterrents & Controlled Access Think like a criminal and take the time to identify the most likely intrusion points to your site, both on foot and by vehicle. It’s unlikely you’ll be able to definitively close off every point of access. However, simply by making life more difficult, you’ll increase the odds of thieves moving on to what they consider an easier target. Plus, you’ll know where to prioritise the deployment of more advanced intruder detection.

Visually Verified Alarm Systems Perhaps the single most vital part of the plan is the obvious presence of visually verified alarm systems, remotely monitored by SIA licenced operatives in a BSI-approved Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). These can be implemented either in place of or to complement manned guarding to protect your site from every angle.

Think about the units you’ve seen on other sites over several years that are already rightfully avoided by criminals, as these will have the highest deterrent value.

Place them prominently along the perimeter and close to fuel bowsers, machinery and equipment stores for optimal impact.

Forensic Marking & Trackers Forensic marking and trackers further deter theft and enhance the ability of the police to convict criminals and trace stolen items back to their original owners.

SmartWater, in particular, is the only Secured by Design certified product with a 100% conviction rate in contested court cases, meaning it is widely feared by the criminal fraternity. Rogue scrap dealers know it is highly risky to accept stolen property that can be easily traced back to the scene of the crime. It therefore disincentivises the theft of equipment and materials that are known to be more difficult and dangerous to sell.

Prominent Signage Finally, whatever combination of solutions is used, leave individuals in no doubt that intruder detection systems are in place and that offenders will be prosecuted. The best intruder detection systems are preceded by their reputation, such that their deterrent value alone wards off incidents.

In summary, there is no single answer to achieving comprehensive site security. Rather, a layered approach should be relied upon that builds prediction, deterrence and detection into one holistic plan.

Martyn’s Law in public spaces

artyn’s Law is set to elevate the landscape of public safety across the UK, bringing a heightened focus on perimeter security for public spaces. As the festive season approaches, Christmas markets appear in cities and towns across the UK, attracting families, friends and tourists to enjoy mulled wine, festive treats and handcrafted gifts.

This celebration often draws vast crowds, and with them comes a crucial reminder for event organisers – the importance of public

safety. This year, more than ever, security will be at the forefront of the public conversation with the introduction of Martyn’s Law. What is Martyn’s Law? Since 2017, Counter Terrorism Policing assessed that there have been 15 domestic terror attacks in the UK, and agencies and law enforcement have disrupted 39 late-stage plots.[1] Martyn’s Law, or the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill, will ensure that the public will be better protected from terrorism under new laws requiring many public venues to improve preparedness against attacks and bring in measures to help keep people safe.[2] The new legislation is known as ‘Martyn’s Law’ in tribute of Martyn

Hett who was killed alongside 21 others in the 2017 Manchester Arena attack. The Prime Minister made a personal promise to Martyn’s mother, Figen Murray, that he would bring in this law.

Under the new changes, those responsible for premises will be required to fulfil necessary but proportionate steps, according to their capacity, to help keep the public safe. The aim is to make sure staff at public venues and events have the skills and knowledge to protect themselves and others, minimising the impact of a terrorist attack.

A standard tier premises will apply to locations with a capacity of more than 200 people but under 800. These businesses will be asked to undertake simple yet effective activities to put in place procedures

to reduce harm to the public in the event of an attack. These could be as simple as training staff to lock doors, close shutters and identify a safe route to cover.

The enhanced tier will apply to premises and events with a capacity of more than 800 individuals, given the devastating impact an attack could have in these spaces. These locations will need to put in place measures such as CCTV or hiring security staff.

Access control One of the primary concerns for event organisers in line with Martyn’s Law is controlling access to and from public spaces. After all, Christmas markets are notoriously crowded, with people coming and going in large numbers.

It is integral that solutions offer an element of control, so that in case of an emergency, areas can be blocked off to isolate the potential

risk. This could come in the form of rapid-deployment barriers, modular fencing or temporary gating systems that can be swiftly activated or repositioned.

Under Martyn’s Law, such measures are crucial because they directly address the core principles – assessing risks and taking steps to mitigate them. By having flexible, deployable physical security systems, venues and event organisers can ensure that crowds are safely managed, and threats can be contained.

inter has long been associated with an increased risk of weather damage, especially in an era when climate change is resulting in a higher number of serious storms and an increase in heavy flooding.

But it is also a time when security issues become more challenging, especially when darkness falls or when construction sites and commercial premises are empty.

Many businesses are turning to high-tech CCTV systems to mitigate those risks, with advances

in technology providing new opportunities for effective remote monitoring.

The important aspect for owners of commercial premises is to be aware of the increased risk level but also to understand solutions available to mitigate those risks and

keep people and property safe.

One important issue to consider is that CCTV can be a powerful tool, but it requires a strategy to deliver the best possible results.

Before setting up CCTV, for instance, conduct a risk assessment of your construction site so that all risks are understood and mapped.

Identify all potential threats that could range from theft and vandalism to unauthorised access, weather damage and protest activity.

Remember to position CCTV cameras at strategic points, such as entry and exit points, near to highvalue equipment storage areas, and around site boundaries.

Cameras should cover areas with minimal blind spots, always ensuring full visibility of crucial zones.

Understanding where and when security breaches are most likely to occur will help in determining the best locations for cameras.

However, not all risks arise from criminal activity. Health and safety are also a huge issue on construction sites in particular - and storm damage can lead to serious risks.

Spotting them early can save lives.

Here are some of the primary

risks that lie ahead in the winter of 2024/25, together with suggestions on how to tackle them: Risk: Increased threat of theft when there are longer hours of darkness An estimated 26% (409,000) of all business premises, in England and Wales, were a victim of crime during the previous 12 months, according to figures from the Home Office released in September 2024.

The most prevalent offence type experienced was theft (14%), followed by burglary (including attempts) (8%) and vandalism (8%).

Thieves, burglars and vandals have more opportunity to commit crime unseen in winter when the evenings are darker earlier and few people are outdoors.

It’s important to remember that crimes committed at a vacant property can also have a negative impact on neighbours and the local community, due to noise and antisocial behaviour.

than having security guards on site.

Having adequate alarms and security patrols, as well as CCTV, could be appropriate in some cases.

Risk: Rise of crime due to economic downturn It is well documented that crime increases when the economy is struggling, leading to a rise in public disorder and hooliganism. Recent unrest in the UK has highlighted this in 2024 and there is no sign of a let up in 2025, with commercial premises, including shops, often a target.

Solution: CCTV towers, which can be fitted with alarms, are highly visible and act as a deterrent.

Risk: A rise in health and safety issues on site in winter Commercial premises, construction sites and empty buildings are dangerous places for intruders, who are often children looking for a thrill. So, CCTV is not only about security – it plays a health and safety role. Property owners and guardians need to be aware when intruders and trespassers are on site, putting themselves in danger. Not having

CCTV and adequate signage in place can lead to an increased risk of litigation.

In addition, storm damage can cause threats to those on site, whether that is a risk of trips and falls – or the threat of loose tiles, scaffolding, branches and other items falling onto those below.

Solution: New technology allows for remote monitoring and 360-degree coverage, as well as a response protocol for service providers and keyholders. Modern cameras are also able to tell the difference between human and animal intruders – meaning fewer callouts.

Risk: A growing number of sites that are closing, but still require monitoring At the last count there were more than 165,000 empty commercial premises in the UK, including in High Streets where 2,300 shops closed in the first half of 2024. Empty properties are prime targets for vandals, squatters and thieves if not protected.

Solution: Remotely monitored CCTV is the perfect solution when nobody is on site. Ensure your cameras are durable, weatherproof, and capable of providing clear footage even in low-light conditions, especially during the night.

Risk: Sites that are open less frequently in winter are a target A range of commercial premises, including sports clubs with a summer calendar, are either closed or used less frequently in winter, but still require monitoring.

How dogs can be utilised in security Detection dogs possess an uncanny sense of smell, capable of detecting even the faintest of scents. This innate ability has led to their use in detecting contraband substances such as drugs and explosives at airports, border crossings, and events. Their accuracy in identifying hidden threats has proven to be

a game-changer in preventing the transportation of dangerous materials.

Protection dogs also have an inherent protective instinct that can be harnessed in security patrol and surveillance. Trained dogs can accompany security personnel, patrolling large areas, and providing an added layer of deterrence against potential intruders or criminals.

Their acute senses act as an early warning system, alerting handlers to suspicious activities.

In situations where large crowds gather, maintaining order and security can be challenging. Our accredited trained canines, can help manage crowds by their mere presence, calming potentially volatile

Canine security is highly effective in monitoring and patrolling large sites and expansive areas, such as industrial complexes, warehouses, and open spaces. The enhanced mobility and senses of trained canines enable them to cover large grounds efficiently.

Situations that pose a significant threat to security officers demand specialised measures. Canine security excels in providing immediate response and deterrence in scenarios where the risk to officers is elevated as a force multiplier.

Properties with intricate layouts, multiple access points, and hidden spaces can be challenging to secure with traditional methods.

Canine security offers an advantage in navigating such complex environments. Canines are adept at detecting and apprehending intruders, making them a valuable asset in preventing unauthorised access.

When security officer teams are outnumbered, deploying an equivalent number of officers may be cost-prohibitive. Canines can fill this gap by covering more ground efficiently and reducing the need for excessive human personnel.

The success of canine patrols relies on the right handler-dog partnership. Dog handlers require specific qualities, including the right disposition, physical stamina, and the ability to interact positively with the public. The handlers are not just responsible for the dogs’ training and deployment but also their overall well-being, including healthcare needs. This partnership offers unique opportunities for growth and job enrichment within security teams, as officers can expand their skill set while contributing to enhanced security measures.

Dogs in the Field: FRG’s Experience FRG has had great success with using dogs in the field. One area dogs excel is the removal and prevention of unauthorised encampments. From vacant property to supermarket car parks, to open land, dogs can have an immediate impact on helping with the eviction process. The presence of dogs often deescalates any potential violence and is much more effective than lone human officers. Dogs can also help stop more trespassers gaining access to sites or entering any vulnerable buildings to claim squatters’ rights, blockading access points and also play an important role in protecting the public.

It is also important to keep dogs onsite for a period after trespassers have left as newly vacated sites are extremely vulnerable to

re-occupation, as those setting up unauthorised camps look for new locations and often return to where they have recently been evicted.

FRG’s site risk assessment advises on what protection level is required to ensure sites are fully protected to minimise the threat from reoccupation.

Technology and dogs also work hand in hand, with CCTV and dogs complementing each other. On smaller sites, CCTV cameras can detect intrusions and control rooms can then deploy dogs to investigate and locate the intruder. On larger sites, CCTV and dog teams are often both deployed together to provide an instant response to all incidents and ensuring sites remain secure.

Other examples where we have had success in using dogs include stopping an illegal rave which could have resulted in around £100,000 of damage. FRG was contracted to secure approximately 40,000 square feet of vacant office and warehouse space situated within a small industrial estate. Squatters successfully infiltrated the primary building and laid claim to certain portions of the property, asserting squatter’s rights. It was suspected that they intended to host an illegal rave on the premises. CCTV detected the intrusion and swift action coupled with an in-depth understanding of the 40 | December 2024 | IN SECURITY

legal framework around squatters rights allowed both FRG and the Managing Agents to regain control of the site mere hours after the squatters’ arrival, securing entry points and then using dogs to help remove the squatters, ensuring no harm befell the structure., Had the illegal rave transpired, the ensuing damage and subsequent cleanup could have triggered a very large insurance claim.

FRG is committed to leading industry best practice and only employs SIA licensed and accredited dog handlers to control standards and ensure animal welfare in canine security. This is not the case for all security companies; In one instance, FRG was called to assist at a property where security services on-site were originally provided by another supplier, consisting of one dog handler unit. Trespassers breached the premises, causing damage and posing a significant risk of fly-tipping.

FRG was contacted late at night by the site insurer who expressed concerns regarding the impact of the unauthorized encampment and questioned the incumbent security provider’s ability to handle the situation effectively. Within a span of 2 hours, FRG deployed dog handler teams to the site, executing a comprehensive sweep. The incumbent security provider’s on-site

dog handler showed they were not following guidelines or looking out for the health of the dog as the dog was off lead and therefore not under control, the dog was in a physically compromised state and unfit for duty, and the handler lacked the necessary SIA licence and was not wearing a uniform.

In conclusion, in the realm of security, dogs have proven time and again that their innate qualities, coupled with thorough training, can significantly enhance protective measures across the security sector. From detecting threats and contraband to providing support, their role is unparalleled. The sensory superiority, non-intrusive nature, rapid response, adaptability, and cost-effectiveness of canine security make them indispensable assets. Our experience is that dogs provide an invaluable edge in security from evictions to intruder detection to removal of trespassers.

Make video security a secure long-term investment

ieran Byrne, Architect & Engineering Manager at Axis Communications, explains the value of considering every possible outlay over the lifetime of a security system – from installation to operational and maintenance costs The video surveillance market is rapidly expanding, set to be worth over $157 billion by 2030 . When considering a new security system, choice is abundant. But making the right selection is not simply a case of opting for the most affordable at first sight. The total cost of ownership (TCO) of that system – and all the

costs which can be expected during its potential lifecycle of perhaps ten years or more - is a far more critical metric.

Security systems create value, whether protecting property, instituting health & safety benefits within the workplace, streamlining processes, or delivering more creative uses of the advanced sensors they contain. But the only way to generate a true return on investment is to weigh up those potential benefits, which will be different for every business, against the TCO of the system. To do that, one must be aware of every possible cost

to bring a system’s operational load into focus from the very beginning and minimise the risk of unforeseen expenditure.

What does a security system really cost?

Whilst there are variations between installations depending on the operational requirements, there are clear trends when we’ve analysed different system examples. The TCO case studies we’ve examined show that acquisition costs can account for around 30% of a system’s TCO, with the other 70% involved in its continued operation, maintenance,

and later decommissioning.

Even the makeup of the initial 30% may not be as clear as it appears.

A new security system requires investment in hardware, certainly, but just how much hardware is required can only be determined by creating a detailed system design, considering all requirements surrounding camera coverage, access control points, additional hardware, bandwidth calculations, and the network and power infrastructure required to operate the system.

This point in the process is an opportunity to fully investigate the potential features of that hardware and draw smart conclusions which may reduce the number of individual devices and, with it, the cost of the system. A ceiling-mounted dome camera could be split and de-warped into multiple distinct views , for example, or the output of a single high-resolution sensor could be divided into multiple points of

interest to help security personnel cover large areas with maximum clarity.

Today’s security devices, boosted by higher-resolution imagery and powerful software tools, do not have the limitations they once did. Getting the most out of as few devices as possible is vital: the fewer individual devices are involved in a security network, the lower ongoing power costs will be, and the simpler the process of administering the network as a whole.

Direct and indirect running expenses The demands that an IP camera security system places on internal infrastructure – notably those of power and network bandwidth – must be considered, as they make up a large part of the system’s TCO. Every device must constantly draw power. Cameras need to offload footage. Reducing the number of individual devices is, as we have discussed, one way to reduce this

load – but, again, clever planning and hardware choices can help keep system overheads to a minimum without the need to make sacrifices.

Many of today’s network cameras are designed to draw minimal power. They may also employ compression techniques which reduce their bandwidth and storage requirements without causing any reduction of quality or image fidelity.

Security devices may also include powerful processors, which allow them to perform complex tasks on the network edge. The lower server demand which follows means fewer energy-hungry devices are required on the back end – leading to reduced power draw and system administration load.

The right security system – or a timely upgrade – could help remove indirect TCO costs, too. Cameras placed in dark areas may, for example, demand a secondary light source, one which uses power even if the space the camera covers is

unoccupied. Opting to replace that camera with an infra-red model, a radar sensor, or a camera sensor sensitive enough to maintain colour vision even in very low light would eliminate the need for additional illumination.

Maintenance and ongoing expenditures Surveillance systems must be maintained and protected over their lifetime. This again forms a part of their operational cost, and this will rise if, say, hardware placed in hardto-access locations happens to fail.

Working with reliable third parties for hardware supply, installation, and maintenance can mitigate potential system downtime – but it is most important to select and invest in quality hardware with high reliability, even if this adds a little to initial purchasing costs.

A solid and easily administered warranty programme pays for itself if the worst happens. A knowledgeable and readily available support service helps solve small problems before they become a costly issue. Concrete firmware update plans keep devices hardened against cybersecurity threats which could if left unpatched, 44 | December 2024 | IN SECURITY

cause a network to fail.

Surveillance networks need these assurances – but they also need them to be straightforward to administer because any time spent managing a security system contributes greatly to its TCO. Look for systems with simplified licensing plans and those that support user-friendly device management tools that support firmware upgrade paths and the necessary software maintenance required to maximise uptime and reduce time-consuming manual tasks.

Expansion and decommissioning expense Plans change, things move, and businesses grow. Planning for the unexpected is just as important as creating a detailed outline of known variables. If new hardware happens to be required within a system’s lifetime, a hardware and software platform which is ready to accept it will have a lower overall TCO than one which requires significant retooling to make changes happen.

However strong a surveillance system’s hardware and software, it has a finite lifespan. It is vital also to consider decommissioning

that system as part of its TCO. The smoother this process, the better. All devices must be able to be cleanly deregistered, data sanitised, and ideally recycled – a vital point given today’s mounting governmental pressure for environmental compliance and the fact that restrictions will likely be even more stringent by the time a security system reaches end-of-life.

Adopting a more wide-ranging perspective, and using a TCO model in the buying process, can help evaluate competing offers more effectively, and determine, for example, if a high-quality solution that is more expensive upfront will save costs and deliver more value in the long term. Overall, our studies show that 30% of costs occur before system start up, while 70% occur during operation, so clarity of vision from the outset is the key to maximising ROI, and a smarter, safer world.
