usinesses face a mounting challenge from the increased flexibility in the ways we work. How can they both enable and control the movement of staff, visitors, contractors and everyone else who uses their premises?

Static mechanical security was not designed for such a demanding task: a mechanical key, once issued, is out there forever. The key-holder can either unlock a door — or they cannot.

Key use is hard to track or monitor. It’s almost impossible to know who is using the key and when.

certainly go missing at some point — there’s a risk to premises which is only fixed by changing the locks and rekeying.

In addition, mechanical key management is expensive for organizations and time-consuming for facility managers.

The solution is programmable electronic keys. Managed with software which enables tracking and auditing, they control access more efficiently than any mechanical system.

Designed for smaller premises, CLIQ Local Manager (CLM) software runs from a standard PC. It manages up to 3,000 locking cylinders; keys are updated via a desktop or wallmounted programmer.

With either version, missing keys are quickly de-authorized, cutting the risks created by loss or theft. Facility managers can generate an audit trail on demand, to find out who has opened which locks.

Trusted devices with low maintenance demands CLIQ devices filter entry through doors and many other openings.

Robust, durable cylinders and padlocks in multiple sizes and formats protect lifts, server racks, furniture, gates, mailboxes and cabinets.

Cylinders operate safely between –25°C and 85°C. Waterproof padlocks work outdoors in almost any environment, however harsh.

Streamlining access for remote sites and a mobile workforce Comfort Charge is a Bonn-based Deutsche Telekom subsidiary which operates charging stations for electric vehicles throughout Germany. A modern locking solution was needed for their network of rapid-charge stations. The major requirements were that it should simplify key management and have the flexibility to adapt to a large, mobile user group of service technicians.

Comfort Charge GmbH opted for eCLIQ electronic smart key access control. This system — which has already proven its worth at parent company Deutsche Telekom — offers maximum flexibility with its programmable key system management.

In addition to a compact design, it was also important for the locking solution to have robust, long-lasting components to ensure safety at the charging stations. These are located in public places and therefore exposed to different environmental conditions.

Genetec recognised as fastest growing access control software provider in the world according to new Omdia Report Company credits growth to market demand for open and unified security solutions According to the latest report from research organisation Omdia, Genetec Inc. (“Genetec”), a leading technology provider of unified security, public safety, operations, and business intelligence solutions, has been recognised as the fastest-growing access control software provider in the world for the second year in a row. The report shows Genetec taking market share from other access control vendors and strengthening its number two position globally (up from 4th in 2019).

Sports fans protected from threat of vehicleborne attacks thanks to record HVM barrier installation

Visitors to the Commonwealth Games were protected from the threat of vehicle-borne attacks thanks to months of meticulous planning and the largest ever deployment of Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) barriers in the UK. Some 18 months prior to the major event, held in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8, the National Vehicle Threat Mitigation Unit (NVTMU) started its preparations to help protect everyone attending the games.

This involved providing advice to local and regional authorities, transport partners, police and the organising committee of the Commonwealth Games on preventing vehicle as a weapon attacks.

As the appointed supplier of the Government’s National Barrier Asset (NBA), the process was supported by Hardstaff Barriers. Its team of specialists delivered the barriers to 18 sites, which included athletes’ villages, transport malls and sporting venues.

In order to keep the many sites across the West Midlands as safe as possible, the following items were installed: • 56 gates • 387 barges • 160 Wailing Units • 2000 Quick Moveable Blocks • 12 kilometres of security fencing were deployed, with support from ZSD Contractors Ltd

• 5 kilometres of high security fencing, with support from ZSD Contractors Ltd • 2 kilometres of temporary vehicle restraint system (TVRS), with support from Asset VRS • 475 modular HVM units In its recent article about the security of the Commonwealth Games, the National Counter Terrorism Security Office stated: ‘The deployment of the NBA, to support partners in delivering the Commonwealth Games, has seen the largest ever deployment of the asset in the 19 years that it has been deployed across various sites around the UK. ‘This entire process spanned a total of 76 days. The size of the task cannot be underestimated. Meeting deadlines, cost effectiveness and the sheer number of resources required (staff and assets) made this a challenging deployment.’

With reference to Hardstaff Barriers’ role, the article went on: ‘This was completed in partnership with the NBA Contractor who completed this tremendous task, thus helping to ensure the safety and security of those attending the Commonwealth Games.’

Back to basics - Keeping a container secure Containers are some of the most effective storage solutions available to businesses and there’s a host of reasons why they are the most popular. However, there’s a whole number of ways to keep containers secure.

Although containers are generally designed to be secure, weatherproof and durable, there’s always a risk of vandalism, theft and damage to contend with.

Here’s a few tips from Tom Richardson from at Locks Direct to ensure you are doubly protected against any issues: Effective locks Let’s start with the basics and the traditional method for keeping containers secure. Locking a container is never enough, but a combination of a few different physical pieces of protection can be the best barrier.

For example, cross bar locks are a great way to combat theft. A fully secure bar that prevents your door from being opened from the outside, this is a great way to place another hurdle in the way of would-be thieves.

Even if a padlock is broken, your container will still be inaccessible.

Padlocks, especially smart ones, are a traditional way of locking up containers securely and with good reason. Durable, tough and reliable, they are incredibly secure. Pair with a lock box that can be placed around the lock and you have a conundrum for any thief. Using an insurance-grade padlock such as a Squire WS75 will also mean the strength of your other security options is matched.

You could even have suited, or master keyed padlocks that could open a whole group of containers, meaning keys can easily be kept track of and tracked.

Simply alarming To double up your security, installing an alarm should be paramount. Not only can you tell if a criminal has broken in or attempted to open your container, sometimes without them knowing, but you can also deter criminals if you have a particularly visible setup. Having a box positioned in such a way that it makes it very clear security measures are in place. You can also use remote systems that can be monitored elsewhere.

Super Surveillance The technology available for surveillance these days is incredible and offers a huge amount of security as well as peace of mind for those that use it. Sophisticated and customisable to a high level, it has also reached a level where it is both affordable and realistic for even the smallest operation.

A good surveillance system can often act as a deterrent but can also be of immense help when trying to recover from the effects of crime. It can aid police and other authorities and can remove the burden that comes with evidence gathering for insurance purposes.

Fence it in If you’ve had trouble with break-ins before, another ring of security can’t hurt. If local laws permit it, why not add in another level of protection with some security fencing? You can go for a simple chain link option or something more sturdy like stainless steel with additional features like anti-vandal spikes or toppers to discourage would-be intruders.

Coventry firm secures town famed for two of Scandinavia’s biggest tourist hotspots

In an emergency, could you lock down access to your entire premises quickly and safely?

Situations can arise when a facility manager needs to lock down their premises remotely. With mechanical security this is, of course, impossible. Likewise, many existing wireless electronic access control systems do not have the ability to lock down efficiently — or even at all.

Mul-T-Lock drives van security campaign

Mul-T-Lock UK is urging van owners to update their vehicle security in light of the latest crime statistics.

With latest results showing the annual rate of thefts involving vans in the UK could rise to more than 20,000 vans by 2030, the security specialist is encouraging van operators and owners to consider simple solutions to protect their vehicles and contents.

Access control manufacturer Inner Range has announced a number of enhancements to its flagship product Integriti, including meeting ONVIF standards and providing built-in visitor management capabilities.

Integriti is Inner Range’s enterprise-level intelligent access and security system, and the company’s R&D team is constantly working on improvements to improve safety and ease of access for customers.

This month (July), a new update is available for new and existing customers, which includes making Integriti an ONVIF product. This means operators can connect ONVIF standard IP CCTV cameras directly to Integriti, without the need for a network recorder or video management system for basic tasks, such as live video streaming, event monitoring and exporting current frames.

Integriti can also now integrate with MOBOTIX HUB cameras, and an existing interface with Milestone has more advanced options for operators.

Another development allows basic visitor management to be carried out directly within Integriti via a dedicated interface. Default properties and permissions can be set up for different types of visitor, making it easier for users to create suitable credentials, and manage current visitors on site. This is available for Integriti customers with ‘business’ or ‘corporate’ software options.

Other enhancements include being able to create

QR code credentials for visitors directly within Integriti, without the need for a visitor management system, as well as new integrations with STid Bluetooth door readers, and Dormakaba wireless locks.

A new chapter Paxton founder Tony Ratcliffe retires Handing over to his son, amid plans for a bright future 38 years after founding Paxton, Tony Ratcliffe, Group Chairman of the technology manufacturer, is stepping down. His son Sholto Ratcliffe will take on the role, continuing Paxton’s international journey and his father’s legacy.

Tony Ratcliffe, 73, is a British inventor and successful entrepreneur. He is retiring from his role of Group Chairman at Paxton.

This comes after nearly four decades overseeing the company’s growth from a small enterprise launching the humble TOUCHLOCK keypad in 1985, to a multi-million-pound international business that now exports to over 60 countries worldwide and secures over 30,000 buildings annually.

Business As Usual Tony’s eldest son Sholto Ratcliffe is taking over his father’s longstanding role as non-executive Group Chairman of Paxton. Sholto has been working alongside Tony and Adam for the past nine years in preparation for this transition. In addition to his role as non-executive Group Chairman of Paxton, Sholto runs his own recording studio in London, where he balances both the technical and business aspect of the studio.

Sholto said: “Sometimes when the founder of a successful company

retires, its future becomes uncertain.

It may be sold, restructured, or passed to multiple factions of shareholders. My job is to remove that uncertainty in the transition between generations and beyond, allowing the Paxton team to work safely in the knowledge that the company is not going to disappear.”

Adam said: “One of the major benefits of having secure, uncomplicated company ownership, is that we are always able to focus on making decisions for the best long-term outcome.”

Sholto adds: “This means we can focus on the important things, like making world-class products.”

Over the last 12-months, Paxton have beaten all previous production records in their manufacturing facility based in Eastbourne, Sussex. This is due to a rise in customer demand and significant investment into new solutions which are developed at the Paxton Technology Centre.

The Paxton Technology Centre is based next to their UK head offices, in Brighton Sussex. Paxton’s Brighton campus is currently going through an expansion as the company are refurbing another building that they have recently acquired, the Paxton Electronics Centre. The new building has been bought to accommodate an additional electronics manufacturing facility so Paxton can meet their expected growth over the next decade.

where he undertakes various creative engineering projects. He considers himself a “natural inventor”, and has plans to use his retirement wisely, continuing to create useful and innovative inventions.

When talking about his latest project, he explained: “Retirement for me is good because I have got a plan. I just love making things. I have a sort of Iron Man laboratory at home, where I can do 3D printing, write software, and circuit design. I just make stuff and I am as happy as I was when I was 7 years old with my Meccano.”

Whilst Tony continues to invent in his home workshop, his long legacy in the security industry, and the state-of-the-art facilities he has helped Paxton to achieve- will inspire future generations of inventors and engineers for decades to come, as access control and video management become part of everyday human life.

Digitalisation is changing everything. We now live in a world where cloud infrastructure and the exchange of information through data centres underpins the very fabric of modern society. This is further enhanced by the IoT;

When it comes to physical security capabilities, digital transformation has ushered in a new era of hosted security platforms that eclipse the limited capabilities of legacy, analogue systems to offer a wealth of benefits.

Yet physical security businesses have been slow to adopt cloud,

often staying within their comfort zone by continuing to offer more traditional security systems. As a consequence, they have not been able to pass the benefits provided by intelligent cloud-enabled systems on to customers. Now, with the opening up of the global economy after Covid leading to huge pressure on supply chains, and a cost-of-living crisis with inflation and energy prices running at their highest rates in decades, companies across Europe that are clinging to traditional

business models will have many hurdles to face. This all amounts to an urgent need for security businesses to rethink how they operate and look for ways to work smarter. Migrating to cloud holds the answer.

A brighter future in the cloud With critical functions such as banking, client management (CRM) and email systems all being delivered through the cloud, it’s only natural for firms to migrate their video surveillance and access control to more efficient and compliant platforms. Getting to grips with cloud physical security means understanding the benefits of software-as-a-service (SaaS), the revenue model of cloud, and the advantages for customers of solutions such as video surveillance as-a-service (VSaaS) and access control as-a-service (ACaaS) over more traditional methods of securing premises, assets and people.

By broadening the scope of products and services offered, the calibre of future projects can be improved, and, ultimately, the way security businesses operate can be changed for the better. With skills shortages and recruitment challenges adding increasing pressure, the migration to cloud can actually lead to better use of current resources, the mitigation of rising salary costs and the multiplying of revenue streams. But first it’s essential to build knowledge of this new world and to fully understand

how to make use of the opportunities it presents.

Recurring revenue and smarter budgeting Moving to a SaaS revenue model means that customers are charged per device per month, allowing contracts to be leveraged as a sustainable revenue source. The ongoing relationship with the end-user opens up an avenue to upselling more features, with applications such as people counting, AI intrusion detection and virtual concierge providing a continuous revenue stream and meeting evolving customer needs. In addition, the ability to carry out remote maintenance simplifies delivery and ultimately saves money.

In contrast, a traditional security system typically requires large upfront investment from

the customer, with the addition of recurring costs for video backups, system updates, manual server maintenance and the energy use associated with running and cooling servers. In addition, the value of the technology continues to depreciate, becoming redundant after a lifespan of as little as 5-8 years, and requiring a whole new system to remain sufficiently protected.

A cloud solution, maintained by hardware upgrades and software updates, facilitates simple plug-andplay capabilities so that components can be easily upgraded or scaled to meet the fluid, dynamic requirements of the modern business, and to keep the system current. Customers only pay for what they need, when they need it, making cloud more affordable and representing real value for money. For the security business, making the switch to cloud

represents recurring revenue and more predictable budgeting.

Improving security and operations As physical security continues to evolve, customers will increasingly seek solutions that fit their industryspecific requirements which will often include the streamlining and automation of security and also the optimisation of business processes.

Cloud allows insights to be unlocked from visual data that would otherwise be invisible to the human eye. With a dedicated platform that can be accessed from any computer or mobile device, decision makers, armed with meaningful metrics based on real-time data about their company operations, can make more informed decisions.

From the perspective of the physical security business, migrating to cloud allows them to deliver a solution that meets the evolving needs of the customer while representing significant savings and better use of people and resources within their own business. Container Terminal Herne: 27 cameras and AI are sufficient to cover 80,000 square metres

Keeping it contained Container Terminal Herne saves 60,000 euro per year in operating costs for physical security

T

he Container Terminal Herne (CTH) is a model company in Germany’s Ruhrgebiet industrial region. Here, on premises spread over almost 80,000 square metres, goods from all over the world are distributed to their final destinations. The security strategy previously in place, involving a guard system, was no longer delivering the desired results for the CTH, and did not contribute any improvement in terms of workplace safety and business processes. So, the CTH decided to introduce an AI-based video and software solution from the

Regensburg manufacturer Dallmeier.

With the system implemented by Gladbeck-based installer Dallmeier Systems GmbH, the CTH is saving more than 60,000 euro in operating costs every year.

From the point of view of security, two aspects of container logistics are particularly important: Firstly, protection of temporarily stored goods from theft and damage, as well as tracking of incidents to allow rapid, conflict-free claims management. And secondly, it is imperative for logistics companies to be able to always identify and understand hazardous situations.

This enables the company to investigate incidents reliably and predictably, and to optimise workplace and operational safety. In order to overcome these challenges, the CTH tasked the installer “Dallmeier Systems” in Gladbeck with installing an intelligent and future-oriented video information solution.

Coordinating all contractors After receiving the go-ahead, the first thing the experts at Dallmeier Systems had to do was establish routing continuity. For this purpose, the company tasked a local pipe

cleaning business. In addition, a civil engineering company, also from the region, was engaged to make the connections between the line routing and the existing installation masts.

Once these works were complete, the Dallmeier Systems personnel began connecting the cables to the installation sites and setting up the server infrastructure. Then they could install and commission the cameras. Based on this system, they integrated the camera analysis function and carried out functionality testing in a test phase. All installations, construction work and approval procedures were conducted in close cooperation with the CTH. Only significant alarms incur costs The system as implemented consists of 16 Panomera® multifocal sensor systems, one PTZ camera, ten single sensor cameras, three IPS 10.000 recording systems and the “SEDOR® AI Professional” AI software from the German-based video technology manufacturer Dallmeier. The decisive feature for the efficiency of the solution is the combination of the

camera and recording systems with the AI-based analysis software. AI analysis verifies incidents and events in advance, thus minimising the number of false alarms caused by animals, weather conditions or light reflections, for example. This in turn substantially reduces the costs of detection and verification compared with conventional solutions, such as deploying security personnel.

“Recognition” according to IEC 62676-4 protects more than property On the CTH site, large containers are unloaded from rail vehicles onto trucks. However, since large vehicles and cranes are in use, the hazard to personnel, equipment and goods is ever-present. To avoid accidents, the CTH is now able to analyse hazardous situations after the fact with the video system and prevent them from occurring in future. If an accident happens despite this, the data is used in the investigation and to preserve evidence. The Panomera® multifocal sensor technology implemented combines up to eight camera lenses with different focal lengths in one optical

unit and enables a high minimum resolution (pixel density) of at least 125 px/m (“Recognition” as defined in IEC 62676-4). This resolution density is deployed over the entire area and all perimeter segments of the site. In this way, it is ensured that details are recognisable at all points of the site, and the CTH can submit the recordings as evidence in court if necessary.

AI classifies, humans verify and respond The AI system transmits alarm messages to an external Emergency Call and Service Centre. If a person gains access to the company premises at a certain day and time without disabling the system with a key system, the video security system evaluates the alarms automatically, and sends them in real time to the Call Centre, which in turn initiates the necessary steps for investigating the situation. In the first step, a member of the call centre personnel addresses the person via a public address system which has also been installed by Dallmeier

Systems. If the person does not then leave the premises immediately, the police are alerted.

Since the objective is to improve the security of the site and protect it from vandalism and theft, and especially to guarantee the safety of our employees, we had their full support.”

Because of this proximity to the manufacturer, the entire project – from the planning through the coordination of all companies involved and up to the cooperation with the Emergency Call Centre – were coordinated smoothly and with no complications for us,” continued Thorsten Kinhöfer. “Apart from the immensely improved security and the important contribution to improving workplace safety and processes, we are also seeing evidence of financial benefits: Through the exceptional functionality of the multifocal sensor technology, we are achieving satisfactory results with a comparatively very small number of camera systems – with correspondingly positive effects on infrastructure and overall operating costs. AI reduces the commitment and thus also the costs for the Emergency Call Centre to a minimum. In total we expect to realise savings of 60,000 euros per year compared with the previous solution – with significantly better results and an additional benefit which did not exist before.”

Primary protection Holograms: A digital and optical vision for industries in transition

P

rotecting and authenticating security and ID documents presents challenges for holograms but the technology’s capacity to evolve and integrate in the optical and digital space, reflects its continued potency in security applications, says Dr Paul Dunn, chair of the International Hologram Manufacturers Association (IHMA).

New optical and digital developments are reshaping the role and nature of holograms in document and ID security. They are also driving innovative and sophisticated design solutions for often non-descript security documents, simultaneously enhancing the security of an identity document, as governments and

issuing agencies around the world, as well as other global entities, wrestle with losing billions of dollars a year in revenue through incessant counterfeiting of documents and insidious ID fraud.

Meanwhile the cost of paying for anti-counterfeiting measures to bring criminals to justice can add up to hundreds of millions of dollars. The problem has also been exacerbated in the last two years by the impact of Covid, which has accelerated digital transformation in almost every industry, accompanied by drastic opportunities for increased fraud.

Providing innovative and sophisticated solutions for security documents requires not only a design that will make a document attractive;

it also means enhancing the intrinsic security of that document. Secure document conception can be achieved for ID cards and passports, for example, by integrating security features with exclusive designs that highlight attack attempts and facilitate controls such as checking that an ID document matches the bearer.

Today, propelled by advances in materials and applications, holograms designed to protect and authenticate, are integral elements of optical variable elements (OVE) on ID documents, helping to verify identities both in person and remotely.

Ground breaking technologies such as Idemia’s Lasink Helios are

to the fore in these applications: its technology is linked to a DOVID (Diffractive Optical Variable Image Device) and combined with holographic technology displays striking optical effects, such as colour variations of the portrait including a full polychromatic view with true colors, which vary depending on the angle of view. Easy to inspect, resistant to multiple types of fraud and durable, the use validates both secondary and main portrait images on documents, thus confirming the identity of the document holder - both images are interlinked to make forgery virtually impossible, deterring any attempted fraud.

Primary protection The IHMA estimates that there are three billion identity documents issued worldwide, the evolving challenges posed by fraud see governments, issuing authorities and law enforcement turning to innovation to stay ahead of criminals and fraudsters. Here, the use of direct laser interference patterning (DLIP) applied by the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology in Germany can be seen as a versatile tool for producing holographic motifs and diffractionbased elements on most materials; the optical security elements can be written directly on the surface as well as in the volume of a transparent material for improved authentication and greater individualisation of

security documents.

Conventionally, a DOVID protects the most important information of a document i.e., the primary image of the document holder. It can additionally cover the holder’s data and a secondary image. So

conventionally all this information is printed or laser engraved by the manufacturer and protected by DOVIDs. However, rather than simply protecting the information, security solutions provider OVD Kinegram’s novel technology allows for the creation of a secondary image and/or data directly. The laser personalized KINEGRAM is highly secure and protects against ID fraud and document falsification. This threelayer system is laser processed to radically alter their appearance from a black to mirror like effect, or transparent or even eye-catching optical effects.

Besides offering intrinsic protection, the use of two metal layers/effects provides further benefits and protection - both appearances are in perfect registration and thus cannot be copied by unauthorised printing processes. Moreover, the ability to integrate the embedded KINEGRAM elements over a larger area in perfect optical harmony with other features (such as the security print) leads to a document design that is IN SECURITY | August 2022 | 39

intuitive and self-explanatory, and hence readily available for human inspection. The design tells a story that even the untrained eye can immediately understand, while the solution protects the personalised data and the photograph of the passport’s data page for ID3 format passport data pages and ID1 format identity cards or driving licences.

Today, the use of optical and physical technologies to protect valuable documents against existing and emerging threats is paramount – for instance, the role of optical and digital technologies in securing health status passports is gaining increasing traction – while great strides are being made in the areas of micro and nano-optical structures and other new approaches to document security. Indeed, the future evolution of optical and digital document security is set to play an important role in the transition to digital documentation for some time to come.

New digital NanoCast technology from NanoGrafix enables the online production of variable holograms or any other optical structures on any printing press with the special NanoCast module. Each hologram can be different and have different holographic encrypted information that can be used for authentication and track and trace purposes. This technology can be installed on any existing machinery in order to “print” these holograms or optical structures onto banknotes, security documents such as Tax Stamps, ID documents, etc. With this module 40 | August 2022 | IN SECURITY

security printers no longer need to outsource holograms or any other optical structure. The holograms are instantly produced and can be different from one another. Each banknote or secure document will then have for the first time a unique holographic identifier. No more outsourcing of security features or extra handling and storage of printed materials. In this way, the chances of documents being compromised are reduced while ensuring a readily available supply of ‘instant’ holograms to support global authentication and anti-counterfeiting programmes.

Smartphone technology is also increasingly being used in combination with hologram programmes to facilitate authentication. In this fast-evolving landscape, security features such as holographic foil-stripes that cannot be replicated are being created. This type of technology allows law enforcement and other specialists ‘read’ a document using a smart phone or LED lighting, in the process providing a robust way to authenticate and thwart counterfeiting and forgery.

Pointing the way The continued use of holography in optical and digital document security points to the technology’s underlying versatility, cost-effectiveness and graphical flexibility. Indeed, it will continue to flourish in those markets where a highly effective security feature is required as governments and other issuers of ID cards,

passports and driving licences have to implement security technologies to protect an increasing array of documents from counterfeiting attacks.

The optical and digital space heralds exciting development opportunities for holograms, which can deliver an exceptional representation of the 3D world and pose a significant step forward in the search for better imaging. The opportunity for further integration by innovative, forward-thinking companies is huge, as digital holographic technology, increasingly operating via smartphones and devices, provide a visceral and ardent interpretation of the world, allowing people to see and sense images in a way that is realistic, comfortable and natural.

Moreover, the use of welldesigned and properly deployed authentication solutions, as advocated by the ISO 12931 standard, enables those with ID protection responsibilities to verify the authenticity of a legitimate product, differentiating it from counterfeits. Even those that carry a fake authentication feature can be distinguished from the genuine item if the latter carries a carefully thought-out authentication solution.

The advantages holography offers will continue even as digital and mobile ID technologies gain increasing levels of traction.

At the new Digital Networking Security Conference in Hall 7, experts will report on current incidents, important interfaces between corporate and IT security, legal requirements and practical

implementation examples on the first two days of the fair.
