are homes present many unique security challenges.

Above all, a residence needs to feel like an open, welcoming space. It must work for the resident, and provide a pleasant environment to greet family and other visitors. It should be a home, in every sense.

At the same time, managers must ensure security of the site, including its staff, sensitive data, and areas where medicines are kept. If there has been an unauthorised access attempt, staff need to know as soon as possible.

When residents have dementia or other complex conditions, it is crucial that care workers can find out where they are at any time.

That’s why advanced access control — that’s easy for everyone to operate — can have major benefits in a care home. A system that can feed back to site managers in real time, for example, can directly impact quality of care, enabling staff to quickly locate residents, to respond to incidents or problems as soon as they arise, and to organize staff workflows more efficiently, resulting in less staff time wasted handling keys.

The solution is wireless access control In 2017, old-fashioned mechanical security is not the answer. Managing all those keys puts a huge, unnecessary admin burden on care staff, and finding the right key in a hurry can cause critical delays.

In any case, a physical master-key system does not offer the standard of security now required in a modern care home. Mechanical keys cannot enable real-time monitoring or detailed audit trails, so there may be no easy way to trace a resident in an emergency.

Additionally, spending every night under lock-and-key can carry negative associations for elderly residents. But if care home managers introduce new technology, they must also be certain it is easy to operate.

Electronic access control must be intelligent, of course. It must also offer a user-friendly and affordable step up from traditional keys.

Panasonic introduces elite CCTV range Panasonic has introduced an elite range of security products, representing the best of its camera technology.

Aiphone improves the functionality of its GT video intercom system Aiphone has updated its GT video intercom system with the introduction of a new high resolution camera and a 7” LCD monitor screen.

The GT system was introduced by Aiphone as a flexible and easy to use video intercom system for small multi-tenant buildings to large private housing developments. Smart devices in the workplace could be used to hold businesses to ransom It’s not just consumers who are at risk from having their smart devices hacked, a Hampshire IT company has warned.

Taylor Made Computer Solutions says the rise in organisations adopting ‘smart technology’ means businesses are just as much in danger of being held to ransom over data.

It comes as the National Crime Agency and National Cyber Security Centre warns this week that smartphones, watches and fitness trackers could be used to hold people to ransom over data. Ransomware is software used by hackers to make devices unusable until their owners back to unlock them.

Nigel Taylor, managing director of Taylor Made Computer Solutions, based in Fareham, says the rise of smart technology in the workplace puts businesses just as much in the danger zone.

He said: “Smart technology has huge benefits to business, helping them become more connected and work more efficiently than ever before. Corporations are providing their employees with fitness trackers

to help them remember to take screen breaks and engineers are even using Google Glass out in the field to help with repairs to equipment.

“However, with greater connectivity becomes greater risk. Every time we connect a device to the Internet we are putting ourselves in the sights of hackers and we need to address that risk.”

Nigel advises that creating a secondary authentication process beyond just one password is one way to keep smart devices safe. Ensuring security updates are up to date and changing default usernames also helps to make it more difficult for hackers to access information.

He adds that it can be easy to forget some common office equipment is a smart device and therefore connected to the Internet. “Almost every office now has a scanner or printer which allows them to email documents straight from it. This makes it a smart device so it’s important to ensure it’s secure.”

Manned guarding gets a 21st century upgrade

Disruptive technology harnesses the power of big data to give users of manned guarding real insight into their security Cardinal Security, the innovative provider of security solutions to the retail and logistics industries, is looking to revolutionise manned guarding with the release of a new platform, called Guarded 365, available exclusively through Cardinal. Designed to provide users with a level of insight simply unavailable to date, this intelligence led approach provides users with full transparency and real control over their security spend.

Cardinal’s response to this challenge is an intelligent platform, linked to a central data management system. When a guard arrives at the start of a shift they use a geocoded tablet – or an app on their own device – to take a picture of their face. A controller from Cardinal instantly matches

this against a database of staff members, and approves the guard to start the shift. This simple process ensures that timekeeping is accurate, and that the correct, fully licensed operative is on duty and wearing the correct uniform. The guard uses the tablet or smart app throughout the day to assess his or her duties, confirm when tasks are completed and report any incidents. At the end of the day, the customer rates the guard’s performance using a five-star system.

Guarded 365 collects data in real time from all the tablets and smart devices connected to the platform and sends these to a secure client dashboard. This gives managers detailed insight into the performance of each guard at every one of their sites, highlighting any incidents, and when/where they occur. By eliminating paper records and poorlymaintained logbooks, the Guarded 365 platform provides a real-time and fully accurate picture of the actual threats that an organisation faces, and allows better decision making by managers on where and when to focus their guarding resources.

The Guarded 365 platform is already working for Cardinal’s early adopter clients, including some major high street retailers, and it will be rolled out across its customer base during the second quarter of 2017.

Comelit’s integrated access solution selected by Berkeley Homes Welwyn Garden City, UK, 13th March 2017 Comelit’s IP (ViP) video door entry and access control solution has been used to secure apartments and townhouses at an exclusive gated mews development in Twickenham, built by nationwide property developer, St James. Brewery Wharf, situated on a tributary of the Thames in south-west London, features 82 warehouse-style flats spread across three blocks and 28 gated houses built in a Georgian style.

St James, a member of The Berkeley Group, opted to secure the upmarket riverside development using Comelit’s award-winning 3one6 Sense digital entrance panels, which feature a built-in colour camera. The panels have been installed at all the entrances around the complex and are connected over a dedicated Cat6 network.

The 3one6 Sense combines cutting-edge technology and design in a single product and was a “Red Dot Design Winner” when it was launched.

Calls are made using buttons that are integrated into the panel. What makes the Sense unusual is that it has no mechanical keys, but uses capacitive technology instead. This external panel, which has an IK08 rating, offers protection against vandalism while maintaining a prestigious, high-quality appearance.

Sound quality is optimised with echo-cancelling and the panel display, visual indications (pictograms) and keys with Braille characters all comply with the Equality Act. Wide-ranging multi-channel solution from a unified platform The Brewery Wharf project uses a broad range of products from Comelit’s IP (ViP) door entry range.

The security installation company, Editquest, has integrated the SimpleKey access control solution into the entrance panels to give residents easy access and reduce the need for additional control

equipment mounted on the wall.

The panels are fitted with13.56MHz proximity readers, which are activated by residents or approved third parties, using MIFARE key fobs. The Brewery Wharf complex includes several vehicle barriers and car owners are issued with additional fobs that allow longer-range communication to activate 868MHz radio transmitters for opening the security gates.

All this has been achieved within the ViP system, demonstrating Comelit’s ability to supply a wideranging and advanced integrated access control solution on a single unified platform.

Residents in the apartments at Brewery Wharf can speak with visitors at ground level using Comelit’s Smart monitors, which feature a full duplex handsfree loudspeaker and a 3.5-inch LCD display. The units can be flush, surface or desk-mounted and the sleek design and white finish contribute to the overall minimalist interior architectural scheme.

Communication is further optimised with residents and building managers benefiting from a desktop audio-video porter switchboard within the ViP suite. The switchboard allows the concierge to send messages to the monitors in all apartments or just to specific groups of residents. A good example of how the system can be used is notifying residents that the lift serving their part of the development is out of order. Group notifications and messaging of this kind help residents and appeal to developers.

Centralised switchgear Editquest used Comelit’s six-port PoE switches on a Cat6 cabling structure. The switches achieve exceptional transmission distances of up to 250 metres between connection points. This saves costs for the developer and – just as crucially on a project of this kind – makes efficient use of space since the switchgear for multiple apartments is centralised.

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) chooses FLIR’s – Latitude VMS to monitor safety of patients and staff

FLIR’s Latitude Video Management System (VMS) makes GOSH ready for a fully digital future.

As one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals, Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) was faced with an outdated, legacy CCTV system, requiring an upgrade to digital IP-based cameras in a challenging and busy 24/7 environment. In order to guarantee the security and safety of patients, family and staff in the future, GOSH selected FLIR’s Latitude VMS as the centerpiece of its security monitoring strategy.

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is an international center of excellence in child healthcare.

Together with its research partner, the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, GOSH forms the UK’s only academic Biomedical Research Center specializing in pediatrics. Since its formation in 1852, the hospital has been dedicated to children’s healthcare and to finding new and better ways to treat childhood illnesses. Great Ormond Street Hospital receives more than 268,000 patient visits every year.

Most of the children are referred

from other hospitals throughout the UK and overseas, to make use of any of the hospital’s 58 different clinical specialties.

Looking for greater flexibility GOSH had a legacy CCTV system in place that was in need of a serious upgrade, but at the same time, the hospital was also interested to know where they could possibly leverage existing equipment and cabling infrastructure to reduce costs and maximize return on its existing systems.

Jonathan Paradi, Mechanical Engineer and Compliance Manager at Great Ormond Street Hospital commented on the lack of flexibility and user-friendliness of the system in place at the time: “We had a number of DVRs and analog cameras hard-wired back to one location. If we had an incident, in order to find and review that video we basically could only hit rewind and our security room was frozen until we found the right footage. We wanted to upgrade to a 100% IP system for greater flexibility, the ability to review video anywhere, and to be able to track action and people throughout the hospital’s public areas. We were also in

need of much better video quality.

We couldn’t zoom in on incidents and the image quality could not be used for prosecution.”

Another critical requirement for the new system was not only to be scalable, but also open to thirdparty products and disciplines in order to ensure that the hospital could integrate technology and systems, such as access control, intrusion detection, fire and building management systems directly onto the CCTV system.

Perfect harmony New Ludgate High-end central London multi-zone development chooses Tyco Security Products’ C•CURE 9000 Security and Event Management system to unite its building management, access control and video surveillance systems for comprehensive management of the site’s physical security

Introduction Land Securities is the UK’s largest listed commercial real estate company. Their £14.5 billion portfolio totals 23.6 million square feet and includes some of London’s most desirable office buildings and the UK’s most successful shopping and leisure destinations.

In June of 2013, Land Securities appointed Skanska to start work on the £260 million development in Central London comprising of two distinct buildings united by a new public piazza named New Ludgate.

Together, the buildings include more than 355,000 square feet of office accommodation and 26,800 square feet of restaurant and retail facilities.

After an extensive competitive tender process, Universal Security Systems were chosen to design and build a fully integrated security system to protect the site, people and assets at its prestigious new development.

Challenges The New Ludgate site was built as two separate buildings with video surveillance, access control and video door intercoms, which were installed during the building construction phase of the project.

It was vitally important to Land Securities that the development’s new security system could integrate the various systems together and synthesise their data to provide a clear and total security picture, preferably through a single user interface. Land Securities also sought a security solution for New Ludgate that could provide the scalability and flexibility to accommodate additional tenants in the future and to adapt as the use of the buildings evolved.

Lee Pegram, Engineering Director at Land Securities said: “In particular, we needed a tight integration between our buildings’ lifts systems and the video surveillance system

so that our control room operators could view alarms that combined video surveillance footage with lift activity. In addition, the new security system needed to run on the buildings common network, and communications between systems and devices had to work properly without impacting other network communications.”

The Solution The security team at Universal Security Systems worked closely with engineers to design an integrated system that could provide an intuitive GUI for video management, IP video surveillance, lift integration, access control and video intercoms.

Since several disparate systems needed to be integrated together, integrator Universal Security Systems wanted to be able to test the unified system before installing it at New Ludgate, opting to build the entire security system for a full FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) prior to the final installation.

Together, Universal Security Systems and Land Securities chose Tyco Security Products’ C•CURE 9000 Enterprise to unite the New Ludgate buildings’ disparate systems together. The C•CURE 9000 user interface provides the single, comprehensive security view that Land Securities desired from its new security system.

Using C•CURE 9000, security operators can monitor events in real time, manage personnel, create reports, display dynamic views, and monitor system activity using a desktop computer, web client or the C•CURE Go mobile app.

“The flexibility that C•CURE 9000 offers allowed us to create a truly unique security solution for New Ludgate,” said James Crouch, Director of Universal Security Systems. “One of C•CURE 9000’s most powerful capabilities is that

you can simultaneously monitor alarms from several different devices, systems and buildings in a single user interface. For New Ludgate, that was vital to the success of the entire project.”

The choice of C•CURE 9000 Enterprise provides New Ludgate with an advanced distributed architecture that can be scaled according to needs and growth.

C•CURE 9000 also gives New Ludgate the option of implementing visitor management with a visitor management web portal, and offers conditional access and dynamic area management for areas requiring supervised entry and occupancy. Using C•CURE 9000 to manage and access data from all of the different systems provides the option for advanced reporting, which can be used to understand events and patterns, and overall business intelligence as well.

The Future The completed project at New Ludgate delivered a fully scalable, integrated security system including video, access control, intercom and lift services. The C•CURE 9000 solution enables Land Securities to manage and let out the site to many different tenants, whilst simultaneously ensuring the overall safety and security for the site. Because the security system was built on a virtual local area network, it is a scalable solution that enables future expansion.

continue to seek new ways to avoid detection, as we saw in December with the German Christmas market attack. It means the security industry must evolve and stay one step ahead by investing in new technologies and intelligence solutions that protect critical assets and people from today’s threats.

Hot potato What does a Security Officer and a pound coin have in common?

E

very so often you find a dud, but you just ignore it and continue. Unfortunately this isn’t some pub joke, but a reality of modern life. Let me first quickly explain the analogy, every so often you look at your loose change and spot amongst the pound coins one that looks different, closer examination reveals that it is a counterfeit. In your heart you know that it is not real and should be taken out of circulation, you know that if you report it to the bank or police that whilst that single pound will be taken out of circulation, this one action is not going to stop the flow of counterfeit currency, and more importantly you will be out of pocket. So what happens in reality? You keep hold of the coin and use it to pay for something at the first opportunity, hoping that the recipient does not notice and becomes the next link in the chain.

What is more, despite having just committed a crime yourself, you now actually feel smug about your success in passing on the pound coin ‘hot potato’.

So having pointed out that most of the country have done something criminal at some point in their lives, what do I mean by the dud

Security Officer? I am referring to those persons who did not go through the proper training to become a Security Officer.

Now there are various types of fraudulent training malpractice.

I could be generous and ignore the least serious scenario, where during the examination a candidate is guided to reconsider a couple of answers, however this is still aiding somebody who didn’t meet the standard to be able to pretend that they did. The most serious malpractice is where the individual undertakes no training whatsoever, pays a fee, and a test paper is submitted in their name; there are also varying degrees of reducing the learning time, in some cases by claiming that the candidates have done some of the learning as home reading, without encouraging the candidates to actually comply.

Whether or not the candidates then receive any assistance in passing their exam becomes immaterial, they have not been trained to the set standard. As mentioned previously, even where a candidate has completed the required number of hours in the classroom, there are various ways that examination fraud can occur.

Training in the security industry generally takes place at one of two types of venue, in-house at a security company or at an independent training provider.

Whilst training fraud can occur at either venue, most security companies recognise the importance of the training and also the knock on affects to the core business if the training was found to be improper. For the independent training providers where the income is based on numbers through the doors, there is a greater financial incentive to spend less time in the classroom for the same amount of income. When a training company is caught, it is relatively easy for the company to close and then reappear with a different name, and proceed again with a different awarding body.

Ofqual, the regulator for awarding bodies, issued a report on training malpractice in the security sector in January 2017. Their solution: more paperwork – ensure that the awarding body has a contract in place with the training centre, that allows the awarding body to say ‘you have been naughty, don’t do it again’ if they get caught. I can understand having a warning system such g

as points on your driving licence for speeding, where you could accidentally miss a change in speed limit or inadvertently build up too much speed, but surely training malpractice is a bit more black and white? You don’t accidentally complete a student’s exam paper for them, etc.

If the regulator isn’t coming up with solutions, then who is?

Perhaps surprisingly, there are suggestions coming forward from awarding bodies, trainers, and industry in general. Probably actually not that surprising then to see that the majority of the industry want to just see the minority banished. For many years, I personally have advocated having the security examinations run at independent establishments, e.g. further education colleges. Even reading internet forums, security officers themselves are coming up with better solutions than then Ofqual, if a security officer can suggest “DVLA style examination centres” why doesn’t the regulator?

At the Outstanding Security Performance Awards (OSPAs) initial UK awards ceremony, Nick Ross spoke to the security industry where we discovered that as well as presenting a television program

on crime, he also worked with University College London on the study of crime science. One of the outcomes of his research was “Most epidemics and cuts in crime are explained by changing circumstances in which individuals find themselves rather than by moves to re-engineer people or society, so while Crime Science embraces police training, detection methods and forensic science it finds most leverage in improving security by rethinking products, services or policies so as to design out unnecessary temptations and opportunities for crime.” Returning to the original topic of this article, this means the most effective way of stopping examination fraud in security qualifications is to remove the opportunity from the training providers.

It is recognised that the security industry has improved significantly since the introduction of security licensing, with the majority of employees having passed the set criteria for the criminality checks and having undertaken basic training for their likely duties.

The SIA continue to prosecute companies that use unlicensed staff and will do random workplace checks. Some people will argue

that there should be more of this activity, however it is sufficient to demonstrate that you could get caught out and is proportionate to the risk and amount of licence avoidance. In comparison however, exam fraud appears to always be somebody else’s problem. The SIA pass information to Ofqual, Ofqual says it is the responsibility of the awarding bodies, the awarding bodies say they meet requirements and it is the responsibility of the SIA, and it continues around in circles. In one case where examination fraud at a training centre was reported to the police, Ofqual became involved and advised the police that it was “malpractice” not fraud and therefore the police lost interest despite the obvious pecuniary benefit for the training centre!

So in the year that the Royal Mint launch a new more intricate pound coin to make counterfeiting more difficult for the criminals, can we ask the relevant bodies to actually do something proactive with security officer training examination fraud and remove the duds from our industry?

hen it comes to sourcing a security product or service, one of the key messages that needs to be conveyed is the importance of choosing a quality supplier who meets with the relevant British and European standards. However, in a world of economic uncertainty, financial pressures can mean key decision makers are letting price and cost savings dominate when procuring security solutions.

Here, James Kelly, Chief Executive of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), explores the price versus quality debate.t has become somewhat commonplace for businesses to make their security-related purchase decisions based on the initial purchase price, instead of the quality of the product. However, for businesses, the safety of employees, visitors and possessions should always be a top priority, and cutting corners on quality can put these factors at jeopardy. Recognising this fact, the BSIA recently commissioned a white paper titled: “The (Real) Price of Security Solutions – a white paper on the challenges of buying and selling high-quality security solutions”. The paper is authored by Dr Terence Tse, an Associate Professor of Finance at ESCP Europe Business School, and explores the price versus quality debate from the perspectives of both buyers and sellers of security solutions, in order to identify the relative advantages and disadvantages between low-priced and high-quality solutions.

Unsurprisingly, one of the key findings of the paper suggests that end users would find it far more beneficial to invest in highquality security solutions, with security providers being better off collaborating with their customers in order to develop a good understanding of buyers’ needs so that they may provide them with suitable solutions that not only meet the specifications, but perform

well over time. As the old adage goes, “you get what you pay for” and low-cost solutions can often result in them being low-capacity, creating further unwanted costs down the line should an incident occur. Such costs can include direct losses, such as financial costs associated with the incident, and indirect losses, such as costs over and above the immediate costs resulting from the incident. Even if a major incident does not occur, other costs can arise, such as premature replacements where new systems are needed sooner than expected.

The ‘real’ price of a security solution can come to light when something goes wrong, such as a failure in footage being recorded or an alarm not correctly alerting the right personnel to an incident. This compromises the reputation and safety of the business, and defeats

the whole purpose of investing in a security solution in the first place. However, despite this notion, shrinking budgets can push these risks to the side-lines; but it is not just end-users that are putting price first, with many existing suppliers and new vendors responding to such budget constraints by offering lower-priced solutions that can be at the expense of standards and quality.

“I have been in the industry some 16 years, and before that, in tech marketing across a broad spectrum of industries. During that time, I have watched and experienced the manufacturers race to the lowest selling price, compromising on materials and functionality to do so and often at the cost of UK jobs in the process” explained Pauline Norstrom, former Chairman of the BSIA who spearheaded the white g

paper. “I have seen the industry rush to the cheapest price to win the bid, with companies offering solutions at very low margins and being left with substantial additional costs they cannot cover. In addition, end users are often provided with an inferior solution which does not solve their problems.”

Discussing the value of the research, Pauline added: “I hope that the white paper will provide educational value to both industry players and security buyers.

For the industry, I hope the white paper will enable us to communicate the valuable benefits of procuring solutions on the basis of quality. Especially when the cost of not paying for a service or extra warranty, or system design or customisation, is properly measured across the life of the system, and considered in terms of the whole cost, including the displaced cost to a business and its current operations.” In terms of end users, Pauline hopes that the research “will help end users to think in terms of the wider business impact of security purchase decisions, to challenge the brief and to consider the displaced costs which may arise.”

“Especially, I hope that the paper will educate the security buyer as to the art of buying a specialised security solution, rather than a bunch of part numbers or just cost per hour; instead to consider the value of the sum of the parts bringing a larger benefit than those parts working in isolation. It is the concept of the whole system, whether a service or product offering that the security industry needs to explain to the security buyer, and I hope that this white paper achieves that,” she concluded.

The results of the white paper showed the benefits of collaboration between the end user and the security supplier. It is not just crucial for the supplier to provide a high quality product, but also for the end user to be completely clear on their exact requirements and what they need from the solution.

As such, before making an informed purchase decision, it can be worthwhile for the end user to work closely with the security supplier, as their extensive experience can help to identify and pinpoint all of the needs of the business. This is especially useful for technologybased solutions; with the fast paced evolution of technology, it can be difficult for end users to identify the best technological product to suit their needs. Collaboration can help with this challenge and enable the end user to extract the greatest value from a high-tech solution.

Taking the time to work closely together can also result in a positive business relationship that may continue beyond the first purchase.
