Emirates to launch new experiences in the Metaverse

Emirates will soon launch NFTs and exciting experiences in the metaverse for its customers and employees

E

mirates Airline Recently unveiled plans to develop signature brand experiences in the metaverse, alongside both collectible and utility-based NFTs. The first projects are already underway, with launch anticipated in the coming months. Emirates also announced that its Emirates Pavilion at the Expo 2020 site will be repurposed into a centre for innovation, bringing talent from all over the globe to bring to life the airline’s future-focused projects including those relating to the metaverse, NFTs and Web3. HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive,

6

Emirates airline and Group said: “Dubai and the UAE are blazing the way in the digital economy, having a clear vision supported by practical policies and regulatory frameworks in areas such as virtual assets, artificial intelligence, and data protection. “Emirates has always embraced advanced technologies to improve our business processes, enhance our customer offering, and enrich our employees’ skills and experiences. We are excited about the opportunities in the digital space of the future and are committing a significant investment in financial and resourcing terms, to develop products and services

using advanced technologies that will deliver on revenue, brand experience, and business efficiencies. “It is fitting that our future-themed Emirates Pavilion at Expo is being repurposed as a hub to develop cuttingedge future experiences aligned with the UAE’s vision for the digital economy.” Emirates continues to engage with industry partners on its Web3 strategy, and recruit talent for its pipeline projects. No stranger to delivering experiences and engaging with customers in the digital world, Emirates pioneered web virtual reality (VR) technology on emirates.com and its Emirates app more than 5 years ago, offering an immersive 3D, 360-degree view of its cabin interior experiences onboard. Customer can explore their seats before checking in online with the 3D seat map, and prospective customers can book their preferred seats from within the 3D environment. This award-winning technology is compatible with all devices without the need for external applications or plug-ins. Last year, it became the first airline to launch its own VR app on the Oculus store, offering users accurate, life size and interactive cabin interior experiences onboard Emirates’ flagship A380 aircraft and Boeing 777-300ER Gamechanger aircraft. For instance, users can “pick up” items from the Onboard Lounge, “turn on” the Shower in the Shower Spa, or close the private suite doors behind them. They can even explore the cockpit. At the Emirates Pavilion during Expo 2020 Dubai, the most popular attraction amongst the “future of commercial aviation” themed experiences was the VR journey showcasing future aircraft cabin interiors.

ExecuJet MRO Services Nears Completion of Major Dubai Business Aviation Facility The new 15,000m2 (163,000ft2) MRO facility at Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) includes a hangar as well as adjacent workshops and offices

Business News for the MEA region

E

xecuJet MRO Services is nearing completion of a new business aviation MRO centre able to house 18-24 business jets at one time. The facility was intentionally sized to handle the very largest business jets, including the Falcon 6X and 10X, as well as other large jets from other OEM’s. Management expects to open the facility in the third quarter. “The large hangar doors have been installed, an important milestone as it shows the construction phase is nearing completion,” says Nick Weber, Regional VP Middle East at ExecuJet MRO Services. “Dubai is a hub for so much global traffic that it merited a large investment in MRO capacity and expertise.” The new 15,000m2 (163,000ft2) MRO facility at Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) includes a hangar as well as adjacent workshops and offices. The new MRO facility will also become ExecuJet’s new regional headquarters in Dubai. The company will be moving base maintenance to DWC from Dubai International Airport (DXB), although it will retain AOG capability at DXB. ExecuJet commenced operations in Dubai more than 20 years ago and is approved to work on various aircraft types spanning several OEM platforms. The company, which is a Dassault Aviation owned company, is a factory service centre for all in-production Dassault Falcon aircraft. It also provides line and base maintenance for Bombardier, Embraer Executive Jets and nearly all types of Hawker business jets.

Dubai Airports announces capacity shift to DWC to enhance guest experience during closure of DXB’s northern runway Dubai International’s (DXB) northern runway will close for a 45-day period starting from the 9th May 2022 in order to undergo a comprehensive upgrade to boost safety and capacity levels at the airport

D

ubai Airports plans to leverage the capacity and infrastructure of Dubai World Central (DWC), Dubai’s second airport, to ensure a seamless guest experience during the planned temporary closure of Dubai International’s (DXB) northern runway starting May 9 and continuing through June 22, 2022. Dubai International’s (DXB) northern runway will close for a 45-day period to undergo a comprehensive upgrade designed to boost safety, service and capacity levels for the tens of millions of passengers that use the airport every year. DWC will handle more than 1000 flights per week during the rehabilitation period, with the majority of those flights being

operated by flydubai, Spice Jet, Indigo and Gulf Air. To accommodate the additional passenger traffic, DWC will re-open its guest experience and service touchpoints to ensure a smooth transition. The airport’s facilities, including restaurants, cafes and retail outlets will be fully operational, and check-in desks, customs and immigration will also be ready to welcome guests returning to the airport. To ensure disruption is limited during the period, Dubai Airports is advising all passengers who are due to travel into or out of Dubai during the closure period to check with their respective airlines in advance to confirm the airport and/or terminal prior.

In an attempt to minimise any inconvenience to guests, Dubai Airports has also confirmed a special series of transport links between DXB and DWC. These will provide flexible options for those travelling during the 45-day closure, including an inter-airport complimentary 24/7 coach service for transfers between the two airports, free on-site parking facilities for passengers at DWC and special fares for RTA taxis flagged for journeys from DWC. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports said, “The planning of this important infrastructure project was carefully done to minimise disruption to our passengers and ensure our partners across the Dubai aviation community are working seamlessly to maintain the highest safety and guest experience standards at both Dubai International and Dubai World Central airports. During this timeframe, DWC will be fully operational with all essential services and amenities our passengers expect. To help avoid unnecessary confusion and mitigate the impact on guest experience, before setting out for the airport I would advise those travelling during this period to double check with their airline from which airport and terminal their planned flight will depart.” The northern runway rehabilitation project will involve the placement of approximately 160,000 tonnes of asphalt and 30,000m3 of concrete to strengthen and resurface the runway and the adjacent taxiways. Some 264 km of secondary cables will be replaced and over 4,400 runway lights have been upgraded to modern, economic and environmentally friendly technology as part of the project. DXB’s northern runway previously underwent a similar rehabilitation programme in 2014, and the southern runway was refurbished in 2019. The upgrade is part of Dubai Airport’s ongoing commitment to enhancing passenger safety and guest experience while helping increase capacity at DXB, the world’s busiest international airport. Dubai Airports is working in close consultation with all partners and stakeholders to ensure planning of flight schedules, coordination of staffing and communication with customers is seamless and consistent. mea-biz.com

Ethiopian Airlines, UTD Aviation Solutions and AFRAA Sign MoU to Re-establish African Aviation Renaissance in MRO

E

thiopian Airlines MRO, UTD Aviation Solutions and the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) have signed a tripartite MoU to work together on Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul relating to the Brown Condor Initiative. The signing ceremony took place at Ethiopian Airlines headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Brown Condor Initiative (BCI) is a joint initiative which was conceptualized in 2020 and officially launched by UTD Aviation Solutions and AFRAA in May 2021. The BCI project is aimed at providing a platform for AFRAA members with Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities to relieve USA MRO workforce crunch in terms of both facilities and manpower constraints. The initiative also helps support other airlines from USA in MRO services and aircraft spares. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Abdérahmane Berthé, AFRAA Secretary General stated: “This signing ceremony

10

with Ethiopian Airlines is a significant milestone in the Brown Condor project. We express our appreciation to Ethiopian Airlines as the first African airline to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will operationalize the objectives of this robust Project.” Mr Berthé added, “For 2 years, as part of the industry recovery measures at AFRAA, we have been working with partners to bring solutions to our members to reduce costs or increase revenues. We look forward to onboard other AFRAA airlines with EASA or FAA Certified MRO capabilities onto this project. Our joint efforts reflect a paradigm shift in the MRO industry.” Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr. Mesfin Tassew on his part, said: Ethiopian MRO Services, as the largest MRO service provider in Africa, is continuously increasing its capacity and expanding its reach to customers in the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. We are pleased to sign this

MoU with UTD and AFRAA as it is in line with our plan to increase our market reach and build our presence in North America and tap into the big potential market in the region.” “The pandemic has exposed how delicate the aviation pipeline truly is. OEMs and MRO’s have consistent demand for airframe checks and engine shop visits, and a relatively predictable demand for new, repaired and used spares. Without a major Paradigm Shift, we will never find a solution. The African Aviation Renaissance is the Paradigm Shift needed for the solution to this Crisis. This Tripartite Agreement will correct the trajectory of the Aviation comeback. “said Dahir Mohammed, President and CEO of UTD Aviation Solutions. The MoU will forge collaboration between AFRAA member Airlines’ associated MROs with US Airlines, MROs, OEMS, Distributors and other US civil aviation organizations companies. The management of the Airline’s MRO excess of spare parts inventory both locally and from USA shall be coordinated through a virtual consignments platform. The Brown Condor Initiative is code named after Colonel John C. Robinson the first African American aviator who also participated in the Ethiopian victorious war against Italy. For his daring service amid Ethiopian skies, Robinson earned international renown as the “Brown Condor of Ethiopia.” Through this unique joint initiative, UTD Aviation and AFRAA seek to re-establish African aviation renaissance in MRO services and aircraft spares.

The new airport would be a notable achievement at the best of times, but what made its completion truly exceptional was that the work was done during the height of the Pandemic. The new airport will help support the growth of tourism in Bahrain and lead to long-term economic development. mea-biz.com

INDUSTRY DATA

New data from IATA highlights continued Passenger Traffic Recovery The International Air Transport Association (IATA), headed by Willie Walsh IATA’s Director General, announce passenger data for March 2022

T

he International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced passenger data for March 2022 demonstrating that the recovery of air travel continues. Total traffic in March 2022 (measured in revenue passenger kilometers or RPKs) was up 76.0% compared to March 2021. Although that was lower than the 115.9% rise in February year-over-year demand, volumes in March were the closest to 2019 pre-pandemic levels, at 41% below. In March 2022 domestic traffic was up 11.7% compared to the year-ago period, far below the 60.7% yearover-year improvement recorded in

44

February. This largely was a result of the Omicron-related lockdowns in China. March domestic RPKs were down 23.2% versus March 2019. International RPKs rose 285.3% versus March 2021, exceeding the 259.2% gain experienced in February versus the year-earlier period. Most regions boosted their performance compared to the prior month, led by carriers in Europe. March 2022 international RPKs were down 51.9% compared to the same month in 2019. “With barriers to travel coming down in most places, we are seeing the longexpected surge in pent-up demand finally being realized. Unfortunately, we are also seeing long delays at many airports with insufficient resources to handle the growing numbers. This must be addressed urgently to avoid frustrating consumer enthusiasm for air travel,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General. European carriers continued to lead the recovery, with March traffic rising 425.4% versus March 2021, improved over the 384.6% increase in February 2022 compared to the same month in 2021. The impact of the war in Ukraine has been relatively limited outside of traffic to/from Russia and countries neighboring the conflict. Capacity rose 224.5%, and load factor climbed 27.8 percentage points to 72.7%. Asia-Pacific airlines had a 197.1% rise in March traffic compared to March 2021, up over the 146.5% gain registered in February 2022 versus February 2021. While China and Japan remain restrictive to foreign visitors, other countries are becoming more relaxed, including South Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, and Thailand. Capacity rose 70.7% and the load factor was up 24.1 percentage points to 56.6%, the lowest among regions. Middle Eastern airlines’ traffic rose 245.8% in March compared to March 2021, an improvement compared to the 218.2%

African airlines had a 91.8% rise in March RPKs versus a year ago, improved compared to the 70.8% year-over-year increase recorded in February 2022 compared to the same month in 2021. The company with the four rings has intensively redesigned the new flagship sedans to become the benchmark for luxury in its current fleet. The new highend headlights and taillights inspire with innovative functions and form the apex of the A8 and S8’s established technology portfolio, creating a contemporary and user-oriented experience – whether for passengers or drivers. both the worlds of uber-luxury and performance. They are flagship models that promise a first-class experience for passengers and drivers alike, perfectly aligning our visions of progress and innovation in one.” The unveiling of the new Audi A8 and S8 models perfectly coincided with the surprise showing of the Audi skysphere, a concept car perfectly illustrating the brand’s vision for the progressive luxury segment of the future, with features that include autonomous driving, a revolutionary interior and a seamless digital ecosystem. The Audi A8 and S8 are sedans that represent status and exude authority – now that they have been reimagined, their exteriors are even more representative,

confident, and athletic, while their interiors are more premium than ever before. Both models are set to arrive in the region later this year, and are symbols of status and prestige for the brand. The fourth generation of the luxury sedan, which Audi introduced in 2017, raised it to a new level with respect to power, look, and equipment, remaining the progressive face of the brand until today. The A8 and S8 meet the needs of a changing customer base. In both models, the premium concept is defined first and foremost by an emotional and comfortable interior experience, coupled with new and established technologies. The S8 sees this exemplified from a pure performance standpoint, inspired by Audi’s racing heritage, combining progressive luxury with dynamic athleticism.
