Dubai Islamic Bank Leads Landmark

$3.25 Billion Financing Transaction for GEMS Education’s Growth

Landmark Deal Reinforces DIB’s Leadership in Financial Sector and Commitment to Educational Excellence

Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB), the largest Islamic bank in the UAE, proudly announced recently its pivotal role in leading a landmark USD 3.25 billion financing facility for GEMS Education, the world’s largest private K-12 education provider. This significant transaction highlights DIB’s leadership in the financial sector, particularly in structuring and underwriting substantial deals that promote growth and development in key industries.

The multi-billion-dollar, sustainabilitylinked facility was underwritten by a consortium of UAE banks led by DIB. This financing, along with the investment by a group of regional and international investors headed by Brookfield Asset Management, has enabled GEMS to refinance its existing debt and facilitate the exit of most minority shareholders.

DIB initiated discussions with GEMS in 2023, aiming to develop alternatives for refinancing their debt and creating a financial framework to enable the exit of minority shareholders. Demonstrating its financial strength and commitment, DIB underwrote and committed to over 50% of the financing transaction, marking one of the largest private sector commitments by the bank to date. DIB collaborated with GEMS to form the rest of the underwriting consortium, including Mashreq Bank, ADCB, and FAB, as underwriters and MLAs. The formation of an underwriting group comprising solely UAE banks

showcases the local banking market’s liquidity depth and capability to manage complex transactions.

DIB’s role as the major underwriter and its ongoing engagement with GEMS Education reflects its deep-seated commitment to fostering educational excellence and financial stability.

Gama Aviation Elevates Business Aviation Services at Sharjah Airport

Exclusive Interview with Tom Murphy on Gama Aviation’s New Business Aviation Centre and Trends in Private Jet Charter in the Middle East and Africa

Introduction:

Gama Aviation, a leading provider of business aviation services, has reached a significant milestone in the development of its new Business Aviation Centre at Sharjah International Airport. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to accommodate a variety of business jet types, helicopters, and future eVTOL air systems. The Business Aviation Centre will feature a 14,000 sqm air-conditioned premium hangar, a 36,000 sqm dedicated aircraft parking apron, and a world-class VVIP terminal.

MEA Business interviewed Tom Murphy, Managing Director of FBO Services, to gain deeper insights into Gama Aviation’s new Business Aviation Centre and the company’s strategic operations at Sharjah International Airport.

Can you give us some background and context into Gama Aviation’s operations in the UAE, specifically from Sharjah?

Tom Murphy: Throughout Gama Aviation’s four decades of existence and operations, we became among the first established business jet operators in the UAE by

setting up our UAE office and A6 AOC in 2009.

By 2012, we were granted the concession at Sharjah Airport to provide VIP handling services. Two years later in 2014, we opened the airport’s very first FBO facility.

Clearly, we have had this long-standing and productive relationship with the emirate of Sharjah and the Airport Authorities of the emirate. For this reason, we intend to further pursue and nurture this partnership by continuing to build on the success we have had all these years and to remain as our base of operations in the UAE.

What is the significance of operating from the Sharjah Airport?

Tom Murphy: Sharjah was the location of the first airport in the UAE and we are working with our partners at the Airport Authority to position this facility as a key Business Aviation access point to the UAE for those who wish to travel with the utmost discretion.

For this reason, we are making a major multi-million investment into infrastructure

dedicated to business aviation. Our new Business Aviation Centre at the Sharjah Airport is one of two major construction

projects that we are currently undertaking to improve business aviation facilities at primary international airports. And, here in the UAE, we are proud to partner with the Sharjah Airport Authority as we recognise the important role that this airport plays to support the significant developments within the Emirate of Sharjah, and as a gateway to Dubai and the Northern Emirates.

We believe what we will offer in Sharjah will be unique to the other facilities available in the region. Over 40 years of operational experience has been synthesized into developing a Business Aviation Centre that offers a highly personal, tailored, experience to discerning owners, their traveling associates and flight crews.

Can you briefly describe your operations at Sharjah Airport?

Sharjah Airport has successfully built its reputation as a popular business jet hub due to its ease of use and close proximity to the heart of Dubai and the Northern Emirates. Alongside this, the airport has clear operational efficiencies that is driven by the airports size and reduced airspace congestion.

We have seen considerable growth at our FBO in Sharjah Airport. Our customers benefit from a zero-slot restricted airport which gives complete flexibility on arrival and departure times to suit their busy schedules. Further to this, it takes aircraft just a few minutes to arrive to our FBO terminal after landing, reducing

passengers overall journey time.

To accommodate the growing business jet demand in the UAE, enhance our facilities and increase capacity, Gama Aviation entered a lease with the Sharjah Airport Authority which enabled us to develop dedicated business jet infrastructure at the airport.

As we have earlier reported, Gama Aviation have reached a significant project milestone, laying 36,000 sqm of apron parking. With the project due to be completed in Q2 2025, we will deliver a 14,000 sqm temperature-controlled hangar (one of the largest in region for business jets) and a world class VVIP terminal.

For additional insights into the latest trends in private jet charters, MEA Business interviewed Adam Neave, Head of Charter at Gama Aviation.

What are the current trends in private jet charter?

Adam Neave: There are numerous periods across the calendar where the demand peaks. Of course, the great summer getaway and the subsequent return home is where we see a surge in enquiries and bookings. Those bookings are either advance bookings, whereby the client base is eager to lock in specific aircraft types for added peace of mind or has known itineraries that they wish to finalise, or last-minute demand that is influenced by weather, destination fashions and budget variables.

The expertise required to facilitate these demands and ensure service delivery is to understand the clients’ trip specifics and tailor aircraft proposals that meet mission requirement and exceed expectation. Our experienced team is equipped with the capability to overcome the challenges that exist around charter delivery, especially around peak periods and certainly within summer dates. These include, but not limited to, the difficulty in securing slots, airport authority approvals, aircraft parking and navigating air traffic congestions delays and fuel delivery delays at oversaturated airports.

Which are the most popular destinations that people book private charter jets for?

Adam Neave: Private jet bookings go hand in hand with global fashions within the HNWI community. We regularly see specific destinations become increasingly popular. Outside of the standard travel for leisure, the global sporting events of this summer will see increased demand for Germany due to the UEFA European Championships and Paris for the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad.

Our leisure bookings tend to concentrate on Middle Eastern nationalities traveling to escape the heat of the region for European destinations. We’ve seen a welcome increase in departures from our Gama Aviation exclusive Sharjah airport private jet terminal as clients move away from the busier Dubai airport locations. With apron access at this location, we ensure that the clients are boarded straight from their vehicles without having to pass through the terminal buildings which is a far more relaxed way to start a summer vacation.

Greece and Italy in particular are seeing high demand this year and the Mediterranean always remain popular. So much so that there are severe restrictions that we have to account for in terms of airport slots and parking alongside newly instigated state tax charges on flights to certain locations. And of course, the South of France remains a constant high demand location from our client base.
