A Welcome from the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council On behalf of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, I am delighted to welcome you to our inaugural Science Summer School NI event.

Science Summer School NI’s ‘Activate Your Curiosity: Making Sense of Science’, aims to encourage curiosity, inspire the next generation of local talent and future workforce and raise the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) activities with young people and their parents. This initiative was established in 2012 at St. Paul’s Way Trust School in east London by Lord Andrew Mawson OBE and Professor Brian Cox CBE, and the project is now expanding nationally with the aim to ‘make the UK the best place to do science’.

Science Summer School is a catalyst for a collaborative vision for the borough to nurture future talent. Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has been working with schools and businesses across the borough to bring together a series of engaging activities. This includes competitions that stimulate innovation and creativity and school visits to companies in the borough which showcase career opportunities to help create a pipeline of future talent for our employers. You can read more about these activities on pages 20 and 21.

As part of this initiative we are hoping to ‘Activate Your Curiosity’ through the ‘Gallery of First Attempts’, a new exhibition which will be open to the public at Mid-Antrim Museum in The Braid Civic Centre from 15 November. This exhibition will showcase some of the borough’s local talent and highlight how very complex and successful products and ideas often start from something small.

The opportunities for exciting and innovative careers in STEAM subjects are almost limitless.

Bringing the event to Northern Ireland for the first time, we present an inspirational programme, which mixes the best of STEAM subjects through a series of TED Style presentations, discussions and hands-on experiments.

I hope that you will greet our guest speakers and workshop providers with enthusiasm and make a positive contribution to the various sessions.

This is an exciting opportunity to expand your STEAM knowledge and gain an appreciation of the importance that STEAM subjects contribute to all aspects of our lives.

A message from Professor Brian Cox CBE Co-Founder, Science Summer School and Professor of Partical Physics at The University of Manchester Professor Brian Cox CBE is Professor of Particle Physics at The University of Manchester, The Royal Society Professor for Public Engagement in Science and a Fellow of the Royal Society.

As a broadcaster, he has presented a number of highly acclaimed science programmes for the BBC, boosting the popularity of subjects such as astronomy and physics and garnering a host of accolades, including two Royal Television Society awards and a Peabody Award for Wonders of the Solar System.

Brian is widely recognised as the foremost communicator for all things scientific, having presented a number of highly acclaimed science programmes for the BBC including ‘A Year on Mars’ 2022, ‘The Universe & Everything’ 2021, ‘The Planets’ 2018, ‘Forces of Nature’ 2016, ‘Human Universe’ 2014, ‘Wonders of Life’ 2012, ‘Wonders of the Universe’ 2011 and ‘Wonders of the Solar System’ 2010.

He also wrote the series of books to accompany his popular television and radio programmes.

South Yorkshire, Surrey and for the first time, Northern Ireland.

He holds two Guinness World Record titles for a science tour for his total sell-out debut tour, which began in 2016 and saw over 150,000 attend in total, including a sell-out show at Wembley Arena. His latest live tour, Horizons, is taking in venues around the world throughout 2022 including the UK North America, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Europe.

Brian also supports the University of Manchester ‘Manchester Access Programme’ which works to widen participation at University for year 12 students.

Brian is a Patron of the John Egging Trust, which works to increase young peoples’ self-confidence, self-esteem and other vital life and work skills and empowers them to become role models within their own communities.

A message from Lord Andrew Mawson OBE Co-Founder, Science Summer School and Chairman, Well North Enterprises

Welcome to the 400 young people and teachers attending our first Science Summer School Northern Ireland. I hope you all enjoy your visit to the beautiful Braid Civic Centre here in Ballymena, hearing such inspirational speakers and having fun visiting the many exciting workshops on offer.

Knowledge is power so be curious and absorb as much as you can. Today may also help spark your ideas about future careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.

In 2012, Professor Brian Cox CBE and I co-founded the Science Summer School in a forgotten area of east London with two very challenging housing estates, poor health provision, a failing school and a dysfunctional community. The only way was up (or close down)! A new secondary school was built, led by a brilliant headteacher and staff, with STEAM subjects at the heart of the curriculum. A health centre and a pharmacy soon followed. Local business got involved mentoring students. Over time positive things started to happen to the school and the area. Exam results improved and more local people started to send their children to the school. In 2020 St Paul’s Way Trust School saw 66% of sixth-form students progress to Elite Russell Group Universities. This was our first experience of creating an Innovation Platform to bring together the community, education, health, business and creative sectors. ‘Joining the dots’ has helped to improve this area and the lives of the people living there and it’s a model we share wherever there is interest.

Critically, a successful community also needs an effective careers pipeline connecting young people to the many local work opportunities available in

these sectors. This complements Brian’s vision “to make the UK the best place to do science and engineering”. STEAM is where the new jobs of today and tomorrow exist. That is what today is all about.

The east London science school celebrated its 10th anniversary in July 2021 and Well North Enterprises began to ‘roll out’ the programme nationally with the first Skelmersdale Science School also in 2021.

Fast forward and the third North Star Science School, Rotherham and the first Brooklands Innovation Academy, Surrey both take place later this month.

Our 2020 launch in Northern Ireland was delayed by the pandemic but this has enabled us to develop a close working association with Mid and East Antrim Borough Council and connect with many local businesses through The Manufacturing Task Force.

As a result an exciting series of STEAM activities and relationships has developed inspired by today’s event. We look forward to continuing this work in collaboration with our partners to build something special and long-lasting for the young people of Ballymena, Mid and East Antrim and Northern Ireland.

Guest Speaker Biographies Presentation 1:

Andrew Smyth Aerospace Engineer at Rolls Royce and Bake Off Finalist in 2016.

TED Talk Title: When baking meets engineering.

An experienced presenter and speaker, Andrew has written, produced and performed live shows around the UK and Ireland, including at the Royal Institution and National Space Centre. On television, he’s the creator, judge and executive producer of ‘Baking Impossible’ on Netflix, a critically acclaimed ‘bakineering’ challenge show. He has also featured as an expert contributor on shows for Discovery Science and the BBC. As a finalist on the Great British Bake Off in 2016, Andrew grew a firm following for his outrageously engineered creations and upbeat attitude.

Since leaving the tent, he’s presented a live cooking segment on ITV’s Lorraine to a regular audience of over 1 million people, developed projects for Warner Brothers and the British Council, and even baked a rotating jet engine cake for Prince William.

Dr. Rebecca Lutton CEO, Lintol Ltd. TED Talk Title: Can tech be science? Actually, what is science?

Dr. Rebecca Lutton, is CEO of Lintol and holds a PhD in Advanced Materials and Engineering, Masters in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, and a Masters in Internet of Things (IoT). Rebecca thoroughly enjoys, and believes it to be a pleasant responsibility, to encourage young adults to get involved in and to embrace STEAM subjects.

Rebecca has found a career in engineering to be fun and it has enabled her to be employed in a variety of industries from Pharmacy to Civil Engineering to Aerospace to Tech. To quote “It has been a wild adventure and one I hope never to end; I also hope I can inspire you to join me in this career choice...career fun!

Dr. Laura McLaughlin Lecturer in diagnostic Radiography, School of Health Sciences, Ulster University.

TED Talk Title: Artificial Intelligence - the more AI’s the better?

Dr. Laura McLaughlin’s research and publications are rooted in image interpretation, eye tracking technology and artificial intelligence, each aimed at growing the knowledge base of interpretation influences and improving the patient diagnosis, care and management. Her research on the use of a training tool to improve chest image interpretation was listed as a finalist of the Belfast HSC Trust Science driving innovation in healthcare delivery award in the Advancing Healthcare Awards Northern Ireland.

Dr. Erin Higgins Astrophysicist at the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium.

TED Talk Title: Black holes making ripples in space-time.

Erin is an astrophysicist working at the Armagh Observatory & Planetarium, researching the lives and deaths of the most massive stars in the Universe.

She now works as a Postdoctoral researcher at the Armagh Observatory focusing on black holes and the most massive stars. Erin collaborates with astronomers across the world within the BRIDGCE network, which aims to understand how elements necessary for our daily lives are formed in the cores of stars.

Professor Ultan Power Professor of Molecular Virology, Queen’s University Belfast.

TED Talk title: Queen’s conquering Covid. Covid-19 - the virology, pathology, prevention & treatment.

Ultan Power is Professor of Molecular Virology in Queen’s University Belfast. He graduated from University College Cork with a PhD in Microbiology. Following postdoctoral training in in St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, he moved to the pharma sector in France where he was Head of Virology in the Centre of Immunology Pierre Fabre, the biotech research arm of Institut de Recherche Pierre Fabre. Professor Power was an expert witness to the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee on the “Science of COVID-19” (2022) and has had numerous media appearances throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Johanna McMullan Senior Lecturer, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Queen’s University Belfast TED Talk Title: Joining the workforce during a pandemic, a birdseye view from a frontline worker.

Johanna has been a qualified nurse since graduating from Glasgow University in 1997 and has worked in The Emergency Department to the level of Senior Sister. She has been at Queens University Belfast since 2004 gaining a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, Masters in Science and Masters in Education. Currently a Senior Lecturer and Year One Lead, Johanna teaches both Undergrad and Post Grad modules in Life Sciences. Her research is heavily involved in Student Experience, Assessment and Integration of Users and Carers into the Curriculum for which she recently won the UK final of the Student Nursing Times for Partnership of the Year award for her work with WAVE - a cross community charity in Northern Ireland whose members teach into the program as Citizen Trainers.

Life in Your Hands: The Art and Science of Simulation in Healthcare Professor Gerry Gormley, Queens University Belfast

Dr. Katrina Thompsom Head of Research, Artemis Technologies.

TED Talk title: The science behind flying boats and foiling ferries.

William Browne Applied Technologies Engineer, Artemis Technologies.

TED Talk Title: The Science behind flying boats and foiling ferrries.

Katrina is an experienced aircraft stress engineer with more than 15 years experience in commercial and military aerospace across multiple aircraft programmes, is highly skilled in finite element analysis for stress, and loads analysis.

After purchasing a cheap welder off eBay, during his GCSE’s, William starting building go-karts and various other contraptions in his shed. After finding out what engineering was, and how it didn’t ‘close any doors’, this was a natural choice of study.

As an experienced user of Patran, HyperMesh and Nastran for static, dynamic and aeroelastic analysis Dr. Katrina Thomsom is adept in numerical methods with a PhD in Computational Fluid Dynamics and an MSc in Finite Element Methods.

William studied Engineering at Oxford, graduating this summer, and has recently started working at Artemis Technologies in Belfast; with a keen interest in sailing and being from Northern Ireland, this was the perfect fit. William is an Applied Technologies Engineer and he will talk about his experiences as a recent graduate.

Fun Fact: All our guest speakers have been given 18 minute slots for their presentations. Why 18 minutes? It’s long enough to be serious and short enough to hold people’s attention. It’s a format adopted by the online TED Lectures and helps ensure that speakers convey their key points in an informative and interesting way.

Join us in this workshop to explore the art and science of how simulation trains our healthcare practitioners of the future. Synergising the science of learning and the flair of the dramatic arts, we create unique learning opportunities in simulation that appear real to students but where no patient is ever at risk.

In this interactive session, we will take you into a simulated healthcare world that helps to develop the important clinical skills for our future dentists, doctors, midwifes, nurses, pharmacists and many other healthcare professions. Where seconds count - actions matter - we will place the audience in the shoes of being a healthcare professional, dealing with a crisis and learning how to develop the skills to provide the very best of care for patients.

Test your Laboratory Skills Dr Mary Jo Kurth and Ramila Patel, Randox Randox invites you to come along to our workshop where we will introduce you to the latest innovative technology in healthcare diagnostics. Randox employ over 400 research

scientists and engineers allowing Randox to remain at the cutting edge of science and technology.

During COVID Randox processed over 27 million tests making Randox the largest testing centre in Europe. Come along and learn how we moved from manual processing to automated robotic processing in our hands on session. Test your lab skills against your friends’ and the robot. There will also be an opportunity to see a laser in action as it personalises a free pen for you and learn more about careers at Randox.

The Terumo Brownie Factory Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies Team Students will be introduced to Industrial Engineering through a hands-on Lean Manufacturing simulation and meet a variety of Terumo associates from their Larne and Denver teams including representatives from engineering, research and development, quality, commercial, human resources, production and legal. Concepts the students will learn about include: batch processing versus single piece flow, improving throughput due to improved quality, and reducing non-value-added tasks.

The students will have to work together to improve a chaotic manual assembly process into an efficient manufacturing line using industrial engineering.

Science in the Cinema Barry Brendan, Nerve Centre This workshop will explore the world of Visual Special Effects in the Cinema through a case study of a Science Fiction short film - Human Error - that the Nerve Centre made in summer 2021. The workshop will take pupils behind the scenes of the making of this short film and reveal the creative approaches to designing and building the interior of a spacecraft, making a robot character, creating a lunar landscape and fabricating a model of the spacecraft. The workshop will end with a presentation of the current opportunities available to begin a pathway into the screen industries through studying Moving Image Arts or applying for a place on Screenworks or one of the Screen Academies in Film or Visual Special Effects.

LEGO EV3 Robot Navigation Siobhán Flynn, Ulster University During this workshop pupils will learn how to navigate a robot around a football field and try score a goal by coding the robot to move forwards, backwards, left and right. Session will encourage creatively and teamwork skills, allowing participants to interact, think and brainstorm on how to solve the problem by helping to enhance their creativity.

The Brush Monster Challenge Professor Margaret Morgan, Ulster University During this workshop pupils are given the opportunity to build a ‘Brush Caterpillar’ using everyday items such as: a dustpan brush, a motor, crocodile leads, batteries and an eraser. The pupils will be asked to assemble the parts using these items to make the ‘Brush Caterpillar’ move as the motor shaft turns. They will learn about circuits and how the motor turns using batteries and wires.

Pupils can modify the brush, depending on the distance from the centre line the eraser is mounted. They will also explore what happens if they swap the crocodile clips and test it on different surfaces.

The Future of Flight Gillian Gregg, Bronagh Ward & Patrick Groves, The Royal Academy of Engineering in Partnership with NIACE and NCC Explore how engineers in Northern Ireland are making a difference in the world today.

A series of interactive activities exploring different roles engineers play in aeronautics.

We are planning to run 3-4 different ‘challenges’ / fun activities including the Tempest

flight resource kit developed by RAE with the RAF; an advanced composites materials challenge and fun activity with UU’s demo wind tunnel. We also have a balloon kit challenge with AR/VR interactive activities, which we will coordinate with NCC.

Molecule to Market: Let’s Advance Health Together!

Dr Frances Weldon & Amber Breen, Almac Group Almac Group is a global leader in advancing human health providing a range of expert services across the drug development lifecycle to pharmaceutical and biotech companies, supporting them in finding treatments for patients.

From extraction of DNA to performing quality checks on equipment and finished product, this workshop will provide pupils with lots of opportunities to explore and develop their teamworking, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Shocking Sugar & Egg-citing Eggs Dr. Anna Monaghan & Ms Melissa Nugent, STEM NI David Gilmore, Galgorm Resort & Spa This egg-citing workshop will showcase the versatility of eggs which have a wide variety of uses and can create a vast array of food items. From cake to custard, fried eggs to omelettes, meringue to marshmallow, the methods of cooking can change the overall result. Through fun, competitive hands-on challenges this workshop will make sure you never look at eggs in the same way again.

Using sugar cubes and wellknown brands, the second part of this workshop will require the students to guess how many sugar cubes are in one serving of everyday food items. There will also be an interactive discussion and presentation about sugar and healthy food swaps as part of this activity

During this session students will go on a live interactive tour of the Solar System and beyond within our portable planetarium.

Students will get the chance to choose where they journey to in Space and there will be plenty of opportunity to ask our experts questions.

Fuelling the Future with Hydrogen Iain Hoy & Ryan Love, Pheonix Natural Gas In a world that now recognises the irreversible impacts of climate change and the need to decarbonise our global economies, innovation will play a pivotal role in the delivery of alternative energy solutions. As a region NI is well placed to utilise its existing, modern gas infrastructure to distribute renewable gases such as Hydrogen. This session will help attendees understand more about the NI energy landscape, the scale of the opportunity, the indigenous resources that will drive change and allow NI to become a leader in this space. As well as hearing from those playing a pivotal role in the early stages of a Hydrogen economy locally, students will get an opportunity to get see at first hand some of the technologies that are enabling change.

Grow Your Own Clothes Helen Keys, Mallon Linen How can plants be used to make clothes, surfboards, furniture, insulation and even musical instruments? We look at how plants can be processed in different ways to make textiles and composite materials.

Helen Keys is a farmer from County Tyrone who grows flax for processing into textile and composite. UK committee of the Nature Friendly Farming Network. Founder of the Growing Innovation.

Robotics and Automation in Manufacturing Paul Davidson, Ryobi In this workshop pupils will experience how robotics and automation are used in a modern manufacturing company. Pupils will interact with an industrial robot and automated inspection equipment to replicate real world uses. This session will use practical exercises to allow participants to understand how to solve engineering problems through the application of technology.

The Application of 3D Printing in Medicine Professor Dimitros Lamprou, Queens University Belfast 3D printing offers several advantages including the ability to customize and personalize medical products and avoid supply chain issues. Join us in this workshop to explore how 3D printers are being used to revolutionise the manufacturing of medicines and medical implants.

This workshop will be interactive.

Professor Lamprou and his team, will provide an interactive 15 min presentation about 3D printing and manufacturing of medicines, followed by an interactive quiz of 5-10 min, and for the remaining 25 min, participants will be able to play with the printers - making 3D printed tablets

In this hands-on workshop you will also have the opportunity to reimagine some old material into a useful new product.

In March 2022, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council invited pupils from across the borough to enter an exciting Science Summer School competition in honour of the borough’s rich industrial heritage and the sustainability and future of fashion.

Noah designed an original prosthetic arm equipped with a range of interchangeable attachments including a Lego build plate, a storage compartment with magnetic closure, two Lego block attachments and most importantly a Hulk hand attachment!

Activate Your Curiosity, Innovate Competition – Winner Noah Steele, Harryville Primary School.

As part of Science Summer School, pupils from across the Borough were asked to design an innovative idea that could improve our lives for the future. Harryville Primary school pupil Noah Steele, Year 5, won overall Winning Design in the Council’s ‘Activate Your Curiosity’ competition, sponsored by the PAC Group. Noah was born with part of his right arm missing and said he wanted to create something special for children and adults like him.

Taking inspiration from The Avengers franchise,

Pupils were asked to ‘Activate their Curiosity’ by creating an original t-shirt design reflecting First Attempts; Activate your Curiosity; or The Universe.

In total 185 entries were received. The winning design by Harryville Primary School pupil Ryan Conway, focused on first attempts and highlighted the importance of perseverance. His design was brought to life by Whitehead based company, Rhuban Design, who use only eco-friendly, organic sustainable clothing.

‘Aim Higher’ Evening Space Gala, London, May 2022 Two pupils from Larne High School and Ballymena Academy secured themselves seats at the prestigious ‘Aim Higher’ Evening Space Gala, which took place at the Science Museum, London on 3 May 2022 in partnership with the Science Summer School nationally.

Andrew Topping from Larne High School and Matylda Rejus from Ballymena Academy were selected to attend the gala which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 16 space mission with proceeds going towards supporting future STEAM education work in the US and UK. It was the first time that the out of this world event took place in the UK with 15+ astronauts and key people in the international space community attending.

The Space for a Better World Charity donated a table free to organisations and young people representing Science Summer School events around the UK to attend the gala and to hear and meet NASA astronauts.

In attendance were Charlie Duke, the 10th man to walk on the moon, Poppy Northcutt the first female engineer in NASA’s Mission Control, Nicole Stott the 10th woman to spacewalk and Chris Sembroski, SpaceX astronaut and Inspiration4Mission Specialist. Professor Brian Cox CBE also joined the evening by video link from his North American tour.

School Engagement Activities Larne High School and Larne Grammar School had the opportunity to learn about local firm, Kilwaughter Minerals which produces high quality products for the construction and agriculture sectors.

The company recently completed a major capital investment for additional warehousing and a blending plant facility to assist the company to meet the increasing demand for products across Ireland and Great Britain.

During the visit, the students had the opportunity to learn more about what makes a major manufacturing company work, the tour of the manufacturing plant included an insight into product development, R&D, business development, quality assessment and quarrying.

The Manufacturing Task Force The Manufacturing Task Force (MTF) is an industry-led initiative, which supports and stimulates the Mid and East Antrim Borough Council area’s manufacturing, engineering sector and agri-food sector.

Over fifty companies and stakeholders are actively involved in a range of initiatives to support business growth including engagement with schools to not only secure a pipeline of essential skills for future career opportunities but to ensure students are fully aware of the wide expanse of career opportunities available in a sector which is not only growing and developing but also one that is becoming more technologically driven and focused on green energy resources.
