DESTINATION OF THE MONTH

Oman: The Untold Beauty of Arabia

Tucked along the southeastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman is a country that defies expectations. It’s a land where golden deserts meet rugged mountains, where ancient forts stand guard over timeworn souks, and where turquoise waters lap gently at untouched coastlines. A harmonious blend of tradition and tranquility, Oman invites travelers to slow down and savor its authenticity. From the capital Muscat's royal elegance and coastal charm to the golden sands of the Wahiba desert and the cultural richness of Nizwa, Oman offers diverse landscapes and timeless stories. But beyond these better-known destinations lies a lush, green oasis that feels like another world entirely — Salalah, the jewel of southern Oman.

Salalah: The Secret Paradise of Oman

While most of Oman is defined by arid beauty, Salalah is a tropical surprise — a city where coconut palms sway in the breeze, waterfalls tumble down mistcovered cliffs, and banana plantations stretch to the sea. Located in the Dhofar region, Salalah offers a refreshing contrast to the desert landscapes of the north and is widely known as the Perfume Capital of Arabia thanks to its centuries-old trade in frankincense.

What makes Salalah truly magical is its Khareef season — a natural phenomenon unlike anything else in the Gulf. Between July and September, monsoon winds from the Indian Ocean bring gentle rains, shrouding the city and surrounding hills in mist and transforming the terrain into a green paradise.

Natural Wonders

Cultural Treasures

Culturally, Salalah is deeply rooted in history. The city is considered the birthplace of the Prophet Job (Nabi Ayoub), and his tomb can be visited in the nearby hills. Salalah is also known as the Land of Frankincense, a title backed by UNESCO, which designated the Land of Frankincense Sites as World Heritage Sites. Walk through the ruins of Al Baleed Archaeological Park, visit the Frankincense Land Museum, or wander the ancient trading port of Sumhuram near Khor Rori — all of which whisper tales of ancient maritime empires.

Wadi Darbat is perhaps the crown jewel of the region. During the monsoon, this valley becomes a haven of flowing waterfalls, serene lakes, and lush meadows, ideal for picnicking, hiking, and boat rides. Just a short drive away, Ayn Khor, Ayn Razat, and Ayn Athum are equally captivating springs where gentle streams and waterfalls carve their way through jungle-like terrain. Then there’s Jebel Samhan, one of Oman’s highest mountain ranges, offering panoramic views of cloud-kissed cliffs and fog-draped forests. On clear days, you may even catch a glimpse of the Arabian Sea from the summit. Mughsail Beach, with its dramatic cliffs and natural blowholes, is a must-visit spot, especially when the waves crash into the shore, sending jets of seawater sky-high. During Khareef, the cliffs are rimmed with green, adding to the ethereal experience.

Local Flavors

For a deeper dive into local flavors, head to the hawker-style seafood stalls near Al Haffa and the city’s fishing harbors. The catch of the day — often kingfish, prawns, or squid — is grilled or fried and served simply with lemon and traditional sauces. One must-try dish is mashuai, featuring grilled kingfish served with fragrant rice and a tangy lemon sauce. Another favorite is shuwa, a celebratory dish of marinated lamb slow-cooked underground in palm frond-lined pits — rich, smoky, and tender. Don’t forget to sample maqbous, a spiced rice dish similar to biryani, often made with chicken or goat and accompanied by dates or pickled vegetables. End your meal with Omani halwa, a sweet, jelly-like dessert flavored with rosewater, cardamom, and saffron.

A Taste of Salalah

No trip to Salalah is complete without savoring its distinctive culinary scene and exploring its lesser-known gems that reveal the soul of Dhofar. The city’s location between mountains, sea, and fertile lands has birthed a food culture that’s both tropical and traditionally Omani — a rare combination in the Arabian Peninsula.

Start your tasting journey with fresh tropical fruits sold at roadside stalls along Salalah’s coconut-fringed corniche. Here, you’ll find juicy bananas, papayas, guavas, and coconuts, often served fresh or blended into refreshing juices. Don’t miss the chance to sip on coconut water straight from the shell — a true Salalah experience.

Thrills in the Green: Adventure Activities in Salalah

For those with a taste for adventure, Salalah offers a range of exhilarating experiences, especially during the Khareef season:

Hiking and Trekking:

Explore the mist-covered trails of Jebel Qara and Jebel Samhan, perfect for both novice and seasoned hikers. The cooler climate makes it ideal for long treks through terraced valleys and foggy cliffs.

Off-Roading & 4x4 Excursions:

Get behind the wheel for an adrenalinepumping off-road journey to hidden waterfalls, remote caves, and dramatic plateaus. Local tour operators offer guided safaris that reveal untouched corners of Dhofar.

Paragliding & Ziplining:

Take to the skies and glide over Salalah’s coastal cliffs or green highlands. During Khareef, some local adventure operators run seasonal paragliding experiences, giving you a bird’s eye view of the misty wonderland below.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding:

In Wadi Darbat, calm waters offer a chance for kayaking through narrow canyons lined with ferns and waterfalls. Paddleboarding is also gaining popularity, especially during early mornings when the fog hangs low over the water.

Scuba Diving & Snorkeling:

Though monsoon waters can be rough, dive trips are available outside peak Khareef or on calmer days to explore coral reefs and underwater caves near Mirbat and Taqah.

Cave Exploration:

Adventurous travelers can explore mysterious caves like Teeq Cave and Marneef Cave, known for their impressive rock formations, natural skylights, and stunning acoustic chambers. These spots blend geology with raw, untouched wilderness.

Wildlife Spotting in the Fog Forests:

During Khareef, Salalah’s green mountains become a haven for wildlife such as Arabian gazelles, camels, and exotic birds. Guided nature walks or ecosafaris are a unique way to witness the region’s hidden biodiversity.

At the heart of this terrain lies Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest mountain, attracting adventure seekers from around the world with its record-breaking zipline and scenic hiking trails.

The National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah, housed in a centuries-old fort, offers fascinating insights into the region’s pearling and seafaring past.

Coastal Luxury & Heritage Escapes

On the coast, Ras Al Khaimah pampers guests with luxury beachfront resorts. The Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah delivers opulent suites, gourmet dining, and a private white-sand beach. Mountain Adventures & Desert Thrills

Ras Al Khaimah is a haven for outdoor lovers and adrenaline junkies. For something more grounded but still thrilling, the Jais Sledder takes you on a rollercoaster-style ride down winding mountain roads—fun for the whole family.

Nearby, the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp challenges travellers with survival experiences in a rugged mountain setting. Scenic hiking trails wind through wadis and rocky outcrops, giving nature lovers breathtaking views. Its cuisine, deeply rooted in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors, is a celebration of community and tradition, enjoyed in vibrant settings ranging from street food stalls to elegant rooftop restaurants.

Istanbul: The City of Infinite Layers

No city captures the spirit of Türkiye quite like Istanbul. With one foot in Europe and the other in Asia, this dynamic metropolis is a living mosaic of empires, traditions, and modern flair. At every turn, Istanbul reveals its deep history and timeless charm.

Start in the Sultanahmet district, where architectural marvels like the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace take visitors on a journey back to Byzantine and Ottoman times. Each structure is not only a masterpiece but a storyteller, whispering tales of emperors, sultans, and civilizations long past.

Cross the Galata Bridge to discover the energetic pulse of modern Istanbul. In Karaköy and Beyoğlu, trendy boutiques, buzzing cafes, and art galleries thrive in historic buildings. Climb the iconic Galata Tower for sweeping views of the Bosphorus and the golden domes of the old city skyline.

Food lovers will be delighted at every step — whether sampling sizzling street foods like simit (sesame bread rings) or indulging in a full Turkish breakfast overlooking the Bosphorus. Don’t miss a visit to the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar, where the vibrant colors and fragrant aromas make for a sensory feast.

And when the sun sets, Istanbul transforms into a city of rooftop lounges, lantern-lit courtyards, and Bosphorus cruises — where East meets West in the most romantic way.

Antalya: Türkiye’s Mediterranean Gem

If Istanbul is Türkiye’s cultural heart, Antalya is its sun-drenched soul. Set along the Turquoise Coast, Antalya blends historic charm with beachside luxury — an irresistible destination for both adventure seekers and relaxation lovers.

The city’s historic quarter, Kaleiçi, is a picturesque maze of cobblestone streets, Ottoman-era houses, and Roman relics. Walk through the ancient Hadrian’s Gate, browse local craft shops, and sip Turkish tea in leafy courtyards framed by bougainvillea. Just steps away lies the harbor, where yachts and fishing boats sway beneath limestone cliffs.

Antalya is blessed with some of the best beaches in Türkiye — from the family-friendly Konyaaltı Beach to the golden sands of Lara Beach. For a more secluded escape, explore hidden coves and pine-fringed bays on a traditional gulet cruise along the coast.

Nature and history go hand in hand here. Just outside the city, you’ll find the spectacular Düden Waterfalls, the ancient city of Perge, and the jaw-dropping Roman theater of Aspendos — one of the best-preserved in the world.

Luxury resorts dot the coast, offering worldclass hospitality and all-inclusive indulgence. And thanks to Antalya’s year-round mild climate, outdoor adventures abound — from hiking the Lycian Way to paragliding over Ölüdeniz, just a short trip away.
