The Genesis & Evolution MDS Ltd, now a publicly traded Company (since Dec 2013) is comprised of more than 50 employees and operates from its 27,000 sq ft facility on Hagley Park Road. Considering the achievements to date and growing catalogue of products, it is hard to believe that this operation began with brand representation from only two suppliers of medical disposable items and as a one-woman operation through its Founder and Managing Director, Mrs. Myrtis Boothe.

Though the Company was formed in 1999, it officially commenced trading in January 2000. Over the years, the need for greater warehousing space spurred the Company to relocate its physical office from the small single room it occupied on Westminister Road to what would eventually mushroom into multiple units within The Domes Business Complex. As the Company approached physical storage capacity and had increasing need to consolidate the operations under one roof, the acquisition of an office and warehousing facility at 83 Hagley Park Road was pursued and finalized in 2015. Operations from our new home commenced on January 1, 2016.

Since inception, MDS has developed into a trusted Distribution Company with a product range that has expanded to include the areas of pharmaceuticals and consumer goods. This expansion has been accompanied by a healthy dose of co-distributor partnerships and subdistributorship agreements.

As we continue to traverse the unpredictable terrain of this industry and economic climate, we travel with solid footing under the tenets from which the Company was birthed: an incessant focus on the patients’ well-being, unwavering personal attention to those served and our promise to never compromise on product quality. Undoubtedly, we will also cling to that which has allowed us to survive and thrive through all these years: doing “Business Unusual.”

Company Highlights 

1999 | After an intensive nursing career, followed by an impressive career on the business side of the health care arena under the mentorship of Mr Glen Christian (Cari-Med Ltd), Myrtis Boothe started her own Company: MDS Ltd



Aug 2000 | The Company rents a small section of a building on Westminister Road to house its inventory. Shortly after, the first Sales Representative was recruited.



Early 2001 | Positive growth & expansion plans for a pharmaceutical range of products fuels the need for a new facility. The Company acquires a building in The Domes Business Complex.



Mid 2001 | The Company gains consumer sub-distributorships for other established companies, including Johnson & Johnson.



Late 2001 | MDS acquires a second adjoining unit in The Domes Business Complex.



2003 | MDS begins island-wide distribution.



2009 | As part of the effort to diversify the business, a pharmaceutical partner is sought for portfolio expansion. MDS is contracted to co-distribute the line of vaccines manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the sixth largest pharmaceutical company in the world.



2010 | Dr Reddy’s Laboratory (DRL), one of the largest custom pharmaceutical businesses with headquarters in India, appoints MDS as co-distributor of their pharmaceutical line in the Jamaican market.

Coverage & Distribution MDS currently services all 14 parishes in Jamaica through our 11 Sales Representatives, three (3) Medical Representatives, a Sales Supervisor and a Trade Manager - all of whom are supported by our Customer Care Unit.

This highly motivated Sales Team exhibits high standards in efficient product movement and market penetration of new inventory. They are well-equipped to handle our range of products, some of which are complex and have specific technical requirements, such as those falling under the cold chain management umbrella.

Due to the nature of the products we deal with, delivery expediency is often vital to the pulse of business - both ours and that of our customers. In an effort to meet (and surpass) these timebased demands, our integrated delivery system utilizes a combination of our internal dispatch team and outsourced contractual commitments.

The intense distribution strategy employed allows us to connect with our customers through a mix of channels, each of which targets a different segment of consumers. Currently, we service a clientele of over 1,000, much of whom constitute repeat purchases. These include pharmacies, hospitals, medical practitioners, health centres, clinics, radiology units, medical laboratories and nursing homes. In addition to the aforementioned, our clientele also extends to walk-in customers and other non-traditional market segments such as schools, commercial institutions, sports teams, spas, health food stores and bakeries.

Our client base has been broadened, in large part, due to the breaking of cases - a practice we pioneered in an effort to accommodate those customers who could not facilitate bulk quantities on their shelves. This method has proven effective for some of the larger firms that we represent and for the sub-distribution arrangements of which we are a part.

Co-distribution Co-distribution practices have become extremely popular in Jamaica over the past 20 years, as pharmaceutical companies and brand manufacturers, in particular, employ this strategy to protect their vulnerability against the combined threats of a weakening economy, patent expiries and the increasing competition.

Medical Division There’s a lot in a name; and the first name of the Company (‘Medical’) tells a lot about its genesis and the emphasis of that line of business in our portfolio. Our medical segment has not only paved the way for us, but is an area of immense focus for the future of MDS. So invested are we, that we created a division dedicated to this sector, which is now backed by medical representatives who detail the relevant products as well as generate sales. To date, there is no single entity in Jamaica to which customers can turn to resolve all their major medical supplies

The sensitive nature of much of our inventory makes it necessary for us to implement and stand guided by a rigorous quality management system which includes keen observation, documentation and adherence to standard operating procedures (SOP’s). The daily execution and monitoring of this system is integral in ensuring that the features and characteristics of our products uphold the highest efficacy to satisfy the needs of our customers. Our pharmacy team forms part of this internal auditing structure, thereby giving great focus to the adherence of Company policies and procedures to ensure that protocols are being maintained.

In addition to product confidence, customers want to be equally certain about our service. We therefore go beyond the confines of quality control and aggressively pursue quality assurance strategies that help to ensure that the excellence we aim to deliver is consistently executed. As it is with continual improvement processes, we occasionally fall short of grace in delighting the customer. Lurine Gordon Managing Director Presentative Alpha-Med Global Ltd. Lurine Gordon has been in the medical and pharmaceutical business for over 20 years. After working in the financial sector she made the leap to the medical industry through her seven year stint with Jamaica Hospital Supplies. She then joined Cari-Med Ltd, the island’s largest medical and pharmaceutical distributor, where she remained for five years. While there, she performed the role of Product Manager and Chief Sales Representative for the Hospital Equipment and Disposables Division. This involved marketing, budget planning, execution of tender / bids for private and public institutions as well as island-wide promotion of medical

instruments,

equipment

and

disposables

for

approximately 30 manufacturers. Thereafter, she formed her own company, SunMedico Jamaica Ltd, which later evolved into Alpha-Med Global Ltd. Ms. Gordon has developed a certain mastery of medical supplies intelligence and business operations – a valuable, yet unique marriage.

Winston Boothe Chairman With over 40 years of experience as a corporate executive, Mr. Boothe offers an impressive business acumen, financial expertise and an expansive network in the business realm.

He is the immediate past Senior Vice President of the Port Authority of Jamaica where he served for 19 years until September 2013, shouldering responsibilities in the areas of Corporate Planning, Finance, Administration, Operations and Information Services.

Prior to this, Mr. Boothe held the post of Group VP of the Jamaica Broilers Group of Companies. He has served as a Director of the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica, Port Authority of Jamaica, Jamaica International Free Zone Development Limited, Master Blend Feeds and the Wortley Home for Girls.

Mr. Boothe is an honours graduate of the University of the West Indies with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics & Business Administration.

Dr. The Hon Vincent Lawrence Non-executive, Independent Director During his over 40 years of experience as a civil and geotechnical engineer, Dr. Lawrence has become widely recognized as a skilled negotiator who has played a pivotal role in the engineering community and has exhibited a strong commitment to national service. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Jamaica (Ja) and Ontario, a member of the Jamaican Institute of Management and a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree with honours from the U.W.I. and earned his Doctorate through the Queen’s University, Canada.

Sandra Glasgow Non-executive, Independent Director Mrs. Sandra Glasgow is one of Jamaica’s distinguished business leaders

who

has

made

invaluable

contributions

to

the

corporate landscape. She is the Founder and Managing Director of BizTactics Limited, a privately held consulting company. Prior to this, she held the post of Chief Executive Officer at the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica and spent the two preceding decades in executive positions at the University of Technology Jamaica.

Mrs. Glasgow currently sits on the Board of the National Commercial Bank where she chairs the Corporate Governance Committee and also serves as Mentor to Caribbean Producers Jamaica Limited. She is the recipient of two degrees from the University of the West Indies - a Bachelor of Science with majors in Zoology and Applied Science as well as a Master of Business Administration.

Dr. Dahlia McDaniel-Dickson Non-executive, Independent Director Dr. McDaniel-Dickson adds an essential dimension to the MDS Board through her strong command of the pharmaceutical industry from both academia and business perspectives. Her contagious fervour for the discipline helps to ensure output of the highest standard with an outlook supported by intelligent industry specific applications.

Dr. McDaniel-Dickson is a registered pharmacist for over 23 years with a Doctorate of Public Health from the University of London.

She is the owner of two thriving pharmacies, a proprietor of a medical clinic and a past author of her weekly “Pharmacy Works” column in the Gleaner - the island’s leading daily news publication. She has recently been co-opted by the Chairman of the Pharmacy Council to sit on their Standards Sub-Committee and is the recipient of the National Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service in the field of Pharmacy and for contributions to Public Health (2013).

Myrtis Boothe Managing Director Mrs. Myrtis Boothe is the Founder and Managing Director of MDS Ltd. Her over 35 years of passionate and extensive medical experience provides great value to the organization through her immense product knowledge, first-hand understanding of the inner workings of health institutions, expansive industry network and her keen dedication to providing service excellence in patient care. She is a registered nurse by profession, and natural leader whose business instincts were honed through an 11-year sales and management career at Cari-Med Limited.

Mrs. Boothe sits at the helm of the sales department while shouldering responsibility for the strategic planning of the Company and providing complete oversight of the day-to-day operations. In addition, Mrs. Boothe, with her depth of network resources, also

maintains a

vibrant

long-term

network

of

relationships with the Company’s partners - suppliers and clients.

She continues to be a well-respected stalwart in the field.

Kurt Boothe General Manager Kurt Boothe’s financial acumen, intimate familiarity with best practices exercised beyond our shores and openness to the application of modern solutions to business challenges are welcomed additions to the skill sets of the Company.

Mr. Boothe has served as a Non-Executive Director of the Petroleum Company of Jamaica with responsibility for Marketing. He holds a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration and an M.B.A. with concentration in Entrepreneurship from the Wayne Huizenga School of Business at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. While residing in Florida, Mr. Boothe developed his proficiency in Finance as part of the American Express Financial Advisors team and as Portfolio Administrator with the Private Client Group of Franklin Templeton Investments Inc. He also spent time in Property Valuation Consulting services and independent real estate investments.

Mr. Boothe joined the MDS Team as General Manager in 2006. He leads a 52-member team toward the Company’s financial goals and objectives and directs the Company’s overall

operations

and

administration.

He

is

also

responsible for delivering solutions to transform MDS’s way of doing business and for improving efficiencies through Information Technology.

Nikeisha Boothe Senior Marketing Executive Nikeisha Boothe graduated with honours from the University of Miami, where she earned a B.A. in International Marketing and Finance. She furthered her studies at the Mona School of Business (University of the West Indies), where she received an M.B.A. with a concentration in Marketing. Her roles as Marketing Executive at Dunlop Corbin Communications - a full-service marketing and advertising agency - and Brand Manager at Restaurant Associates Limited (franchise holders for Popeyes and Burger King in Jamaica) have provided her with an in-depth knowledge of advertising, media, production, public relations, event planning, consumer

behaviour,

budget

management

and

financial

marketing.

As part of the MDS team since 2012, Miss Boothe now serves as Senior Marketing Executive with responsibility for overall corporate branding, ensuring that the Company’s activities encapsulates its vision, mission, values, personality, positioning and image. In addition, she provides oversight for Customer Care, monitors

data

mining

activities

and

liaises

with

Gerard Whyte Business Development & Client Relations Mgr A glimpse at Mr. Whyte’s resume reveals a career in the pharmaceutical industry dating back to 1980 with a long thread of positions held while at Cari-Med Ltd and GlaxoSmithKline Caribbean - Medical Representative, Supervisor and Caribbean District Manager.

Prior to joining MDS in 2009, Mr. Whyte was a founding partner at Inter Commercial Distributors Ltd where he was Director of Sales & Marketing.

As the Business Development & Client Relations Manager of MDS, Mr. Whyte establishes and manages commercial expansion by driving sales activities, exploring leads and playing an integral role in new business acquisition. With relationships being central to the growth of the Company in this business-to-business environment, Mr. Whyte also holds the reins in maintaining institutional and client relations.

Lenworth Murray Trade Manager Mr. Murray’s longstanding career in the medical field began in 1991 at Cari-Med Ltd. During his professional career, he has enjoyed the challenges of varying roles including that of Sales Representative, Medical Representative for the Apotex brand, North Caribbean Sales Manager for Apotex Inc,, Pharma Sales Supervisor and Medical Representative for Schering Plough Caribe.

Mr. Murray joined the MDS team as Trade Manager in 2012; a role which designates him responsible for managing sales output, strengthening communication in distribution channels, enhancing customer relationships in the trade, steering onthe-ground

Antoinette Archer McDonald Sales Supervisor Mrs. McDonald is the newest entrant to the MDS family, having joined in February 2016 as Sales Supervisor with direct responsibility for the Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (DRL) line.

Through

keen

analysis

of

the

internal

and

external

environments, she guides the DRL-specific Sales Team to optimise

business

outcomes.

She

also

manages

the

development of brand building strategies, product growth approaches

and

the

advancement

of

consumer

relationships.

Prior to coming to MDS, Mrs. McDonald enjoyed 17 years in the pharmaceutical arena, often working for some of the most well-respected companies in the industry including GlaxoSmithKline Caribbean Limited and Cari-Med Limited. Her varying roles, including that of Sales Coordinator, Sales Representative and Medical Representative, have made her well-equipped to create a profound footprint on the MDS team through the depth of knowledge gleaned from her broad wealth of experiences and her uncanny way of engaging people - both staff and customers alike.

Janice Pitter Financial Controller Ms. Pitter joined MDS in February 2013 after serving for nine years at one of the island’s oldest and largest retail manufacturing and distribution companies. While there, her varying capacities included that of Finance Manager and Chief Accountant. These posts were superseded by her 12-year tenure as Audit Senior at BDO Chartered Accountants.

Janice serves on the MDS executive team as Financial Controller, a role which allows her oversight of the Company’s corporate financial strategy and the continued buoyance of the operation in Jamaica. In particular, she integrates her regulatory expertise and financial acumen to streamline procedures related to planning, procurement, investment and accounting.

Our Team | Out of Many …One! Throughout MDS’ journey in the Jamaican business landscape, there has been an assortment of elements that allowed for excellence. The major ingredients in that recipe has hinged greatly on the fused passions and capabilities of our human capital.

Cultivating and sustaining a healthy operational pulse through our team has led to growth and remarkable performance delivery to all stakeholders in ways that traditional metrics may not always be able to capture. At MDS, employees are more than just a ‘workforce.’ Having worked hand-in-hand with many members of the team for years, and having made sacrifices together to build the business, we have managed to cultivate a certain level of affinity that allows us to consider each other as more than just co-workers. We often see ourselves as family.

With this in mind, we do our endeavor best to implement training and development through some internal activities to which we remain committed. One such is the recurring product training exercises extended to members of staff, particularly those directly linked to customer interfacing. Education & Leadership Our Corporate Internship Programme affords us the invaluable opportunity of having a high school student become a part of our team during the summer months – a season we have found to be rewarding beyond measure. ‘Home Sweet Home’: 83 Hagley Park Road Words cannot begin to express our gratitude for being able to execute operations from our new ‘home.’ This 27,000 sq ft facility and accompanying back-up systems have led to improved controls, better monitoring and greater efficiencies - with much of these favourable results owing to the fact that the offices and warehousing now reside under a single roof. The increased physical capacity also provides a generous amount of room for growth in the foreseeable future.
