Our Mission

Our mission at Berkeley Academy is simple - to provide the absolute best program to improve your English. Located in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada (one of Toronto's safest and most affluent areas), Berkeley Academy runs a specialized English language curriculum, taught by the very best teachers, within a world-class facility. We offer general comprehensive English programs, hotel internship programs, specialized English and sport programs, summer and winter camps, and parent/child programs.

You will notice our school is unique from the very start. Firstly, Berkeley’s campus is located within Toronto’s premier high performance athletic training facility, the Sports Village.

Our English programs are innovative. We are the first school to combine an English curriculum with first-class sports programs. Choose from ice-hockey, figure skating, strength and conditioning, and baseball. Our coaches are among the best in Canada.

Our internship programs are unique. For those in the hotel industry, your placement is built right into our curriculum and begins from the very start of your studies with us. We even offer innovative accommodation and meal plan options. To take the worry out of living with a new host family in a new country, we are the first school to offer a Hotel Stay accommodation option with our partner hotels and to offer nutritionally optimized meal plans prepared by our executive chefs.

Program Overview

Our courses help enhance your English language proficiency, academic skills, and build your confidence. You will study in a supportive academic environment and build your language skills through communicative activities, practical exercises, group work, presentations, and assignments. For those who choose, we also offer an integrated internship program into our English curriculum where students will have the opportunity to immediately incorporate what they've learned within a North American working atmosphere. To maximize your English learning experience you will be immersed in an English only atmosphere with constant communication with other international students, coworkers, teachers, and local English speaking students. This creates a unique atmosphere of learning and immediate integration into your everyday life.

Weekly Testing and Progress Reports: Our program combines in-depth training in core language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking)--areas in which you will be tested weekly to make sure you are improving and progressing towards your goals. These regular diagnostic appraisals along with detailed student evaluation reports will allow you to measure your progress. In all programs, ongoing supervision and mentoring will help ensure that you are improving rapidly.

Level Completion Your test results combined with your overall evaluation report determine your readiness to move to the next level. On average, students progress to the next level every 4 weeks.

Start Dates First Monday of every month with alternative start date being third Monday of the month.

Berkeley Academy offers English programs for all levels from beginner through to advanced.

Our English programs consists of 11 levels where students begin by being placed in a level based on a diagnostic placement test.

Berkeley’s English Programs

Comprehensive English Our Comprehensive English program helps students learn English quickly and easily by providing a supportive environment where students from around the world come together to study English. It is an intensive 30 English lessons/week program and focuses on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. This comprehensive English language course is available for all students from beginner to advanced. The coursework will enable students to build a wide range of vocabulary and grammatical structures and apply them to essential everyday and professional tasks.

The morning portion of our Comprehensive English Program will focus on reading, writing and grammar, idioms and vocabulary. The afternoon portion will focus on developing students' communication skills, focusing on the improvement of students' overall pronunciation skills, as well as the development the listening skills necessary for effective oral communication. The course is designed to enable the student to refine conversational skills for the purpose of participating in a wide array of discussions, presentations and social situations. Your language skills will be built through communicative activities, practical exercises, group work, presentations, and assignments.

We make use of the latest instructional technology and employ current teaching methods to help you achieve your language goals - preparing for post-secondary studies, being ready for the job you want, or simply enjoying every day life in. Upon completion of this course students will receive a Certificate of English fluency based on their final completed level and length of study.

Comprehensive English plus Internship Program Berkeley incorporates an internship program in our curriculum to further enhance students' learning of the English language in a real life North American working atmosphere. Our internship program is unique as it is built right into our English curriculum, meaning you are learning English in class and also on the field from the very beginning of your program. There is also an opportunity to perform a full time internship at the end of your study. On top of our Comprehensive English Program which is an intensive 30 lessons/week English schedule, students will also be placed in an internship position for a 90 minute placement twice per week where you will learn and interact with company employees and and assist in duties to help you improve your English through a real life North American work experience.

Full Time Professional Internship Program After students complete Berkeley's Internship Program, they have the option of participating in our Professional Internship Program. Students who achieve a minimum TOEIC score of 700 and have completed a minimum of 26 weeks in our Comprehensive English plus Internship Program, are eligible to do a full 4 week unpaid internship. Upon completion of the Professional Internship Program, students will receive a Certificate of Professional Internship Completion and a Letter of Recommendation, if applicable.

Summer/Winter Camps

Learning a second language has never been so much fun! Berkeley's Summer/Winter English camps combines English classes with instructional and recreational activities, sightseeing tours and social and cultural events.

The goals of this program are to teach students English, to educate them about the world through integration with students and staff of different cultures, to teach them valuable skills that will last their lifetime and give them a wonderful and memorable experience. All aspects of the program including the English classes, activities, tours, meals and accommodation, are designed to ensure that these goals are achieved.

Sample activities include: Niagara Falls, Canada's Wonderland, Beaches, Toronto Zoo, CN Tower, Casa Loma Castle, Royal Ontario Museum, Centre Island, Art Gallery of Ontario, City Scavenger Hunt, Blue Jays Game, High Park, Multisports, Ontario Science Centre, Bowling, Movie Night, Bata Shoe Museum, and Shopping excursions.

Berkeley Academy offers three kinds of Summer/Winter Programs: our English and Activities Program, our English and Activities plus Sports Program, and our Parent/Child Program.

These programs offer students an intensive English curriculum with our specialized and experienced English instructors. Afternoons, evenings and weekends are spent with our energetic team of activity coordinators doing projects, taking part in activities and excursions that are designed to optimize their learning experience. Our English and Sports programs allows you to improve your language skills and athletic performance at the same time. Our sports coaches are handpicked and among the very best in Canada.For those interested in taking part in a true cultural experience with their children, our Parent/Child programsoffer the perfect balance between studies and experiencing Canadian activities.

Camp Programs English and Activities Camp Come enjoy an English camp like no other. Berkeley’s English and Activities camp in Toronto, Canada, offers the very best in education, trips, and activities to experience Canadian culture.

Our English and Activities Camp is designed for those who want to improve their English ability, make new friends, visit exciting tourist destinations, and participate in authentic and fun Canadian activities. Students will attend Berkeley’s full time Comprehensive English Programwhich will offer intensive English instruction to drastically improve your English speaking ability. Every afternoon and weekends, students will head to a different tourist destination or try a fun Canadian sports activity. Trips and activities have been specially chosen to introduce students to typical Canadian activities. Berkeley Academy is located in Vaughan, Ontario, one of the safest and most affluent areas in Toronto. Counsellors will also be provided that speak your native language to make your stay all the more enjoyable. Learn English while experiencing a truly Canadian experience all at once!

Parent/Child Programs Berkeley's Parent/Child Programs allows parents and children to enjoy learning English as well as discovering all that Toronto has to offer together. Families have the option of living together in the same Hotel Stay room or Homestay. Come learn English together and find out what fun Toronto has waiting for you.

Parent/Child English and Activities Program Parents will study Full Time English (25 lessons/week) in our Comprehensive English Program which offers intensive English instruction to drastically improve your English speaking ability.

Their children will also take part in the same Comprehensive English Program with other children and teens. It is designed to enhance the athletic abilities of athletes of any skill and any age. Choose from ice hockey, figure skating, strength & conditioning and baseball camps. Students will attend sports training in the afternoon, four days per week. On one afternoon and weekends, parents will join their children on trips to a different tourist destination or try a fun Canadian activity (all costs are included).

Accommodations

Homestay Homestay placements are located within a 10-45 minute commute of Berkeley’s campus. Our families host international students because they have an interest in learning about other cultures, a desire to share their Canadian lifestyle with international students and to learn about other cultures and traditions. They enjoy helping students improve their English skills and provide them with as much experience as possible. Our homestay families are fun and provide a warm and welcoming environment for new students to Canada!

Your Homestay will include: >> A private bedroom >> Access to bathroom, computer or WI-FI, local telephone calls, laundry and kitchen facilities >> Three meals a day: breakfast, lunch (taken to school), dinner >> Opportunities to speak English outside of the classroom and some local social events We also have homestays with a private bathroom and other specific requests. If you are not happy with your homestay family, we will locate a new host family for you, at no additional charge. We want to make sure you are happy at school and at home.

Hotel Stay Hotel Stay accommodations will be at the luxurious Aloft Hotel (a division of W hotels) located in Vaughan Ontario, one of the safest and most affluent areas in Toronto. It is also a short walk from the Berkeley Academy campus. This option allows students to stop worrying about homestay conditions.

This option offers students a more independent lifestyle. Students will meet and make new friends with other students, staff and other travellers. Amenities include a flat screen tv, laundry facilities, swimming pool, gym, and lounge. You will also be provided with free wifi on one of the fastest internet connections in Canada, an ideal way to Skype with your friends and family back home. Buffet breakfast is included. Please note that this option does not include lunch or dinner. Berkeley also offers an optional meal plan prepared by our executive chefs using the freshest ingredients and nutritionally optimized.

Private Residences Students will be placed in a home located within a short distance of the Berkeley campus.

Private residences also offers individuals with a more independent lifestyle. Students may live alongside native Canadians as well as other international students, all sharing the experience together. Please note that this option does not include a meal plan.

Campus

Berkeley Academy is located in Vaughan, one of the safest and most affluent areas to live in the Greater Toronto Area. Berkeley's campus makes up part of the Sports Village complex- a state-of-the-art, high performance sports training facility. When in Toronto, the Chinese National Women's ice hockey team practices here as well as world champion figure skaters Yu Na Kim and Patrick Chan to name a few.

Athletics and Facilities Situated on a vast 36 acres of land, the Sports Village is a world class facility, run by a world class staff, and used by world class professionals.
