FILM FANATICS
On Apr. 1, Mater Dei Film students showed off their films on the big screen at the Frida Cinema.
On Apr. 20, students in the Mater Dei Film program presented their short films at the Annual Monarch Festival held at the Frida Cinema. Friends, family, and professional film teachers and workers attended the event to show support for the program.
There is a lot of work that happens behind the scenes in the production process. Students must coordinate and allot time for filming and editing, taking careful consideration of the set, and creating an emotional, impactful story.
“The most difficult part about filming was pre-production and scheduling,” senior Matteo Dawson said. “In pre-production, coming up with shot ideas was a bit difficult and we ran into a lot of schedule changes and difficulties.”
The work placed students under a lot of pressure, but it is under pressure where true creativity and innovators rise above. The stress shaped students into better and stronger film makers and producers.
“My work for the film fest has been a learning experience because it was my first time really making an extended short film and taking a bigger leadership role in it, so I learned how much work it really is to plan
and put together a good short film,” junior Diego Villa said.
Students poured their hearts, minds, and creativity into their films and had the opportunity of presenting their work at the Frida Cinema, a staple in the local cinema scene. For students, this Monarch Film Festival marked a special day in their high school and film careers.

MAKING HISTORY

On Mar. 14, the Mater Dei Boys Varsity Soccer Team made history by competing and winning the first ever CIF State Division 1 Championship game. After finishing a very successful league season with twenty-one wins, only three losses and a tie, the boys went into competition with a lot of energy and motivation to advance all the way to the finals. By continuing the momentum and atmosphere of the season building up to those final games, the attitude and ambiance of both the players and team was evident and proved to be a motivating factor to keep in mind during play.
“When playing for a game of this magnitude you can’t let it influence your preparation. Our focus and discipline towards the game was the same as it had been all season and I think that was a big reason for our success this year,” senior James Obleda said. “We never had to rise up to the occasion because our preparation was always at a championship level.”
Like many other teams and competitive groups on campus, the boys were constantly working hard during the season to set themselves up for great competition during the championship rounds. Leading up to those final games, many factors went into the teams’ performance that helped shape
the team as a whole and gave the boys a leg up in the race.
“Throughout the season there were ups and downs, but we all came together as one team,” freshman Vincent Gomez said. “With the support from the coaching staff and by learning to trust one another, we were able to fight for each other and secure the title of being the number one nationally ranked team.”
Wrapping up with CIF and all the championship the season came to a bitter sweet close with the momentous win and close to the season. Along with such an iconic achievement came many emotions from all groups program, from the coaching staff to the attendees and everyone in between, everyone was able to be a part moment and share the elation felt in the moment.
“It was unbelievable when we won league, then we won the CIF Final, it was pure elation,” Head Coach Ganey said. “It was tense and a pretty surreal feeling the final whistle when we realized we were going to first ever state final. I wouldn’t have had it any other highlighted our resiliency, our preparation and our see a task all the way through.”

The journey began in the capital of San Jose, but the true adventure started when students climbed into the highlands of Monteverde. Surrounded by the St. Elena Cloud Forest, Monarchs traded their classrooms for a week of the vibrant wildlife of Costa Rica.
Exploration was at the center of the trip, with hikes through the canopy and a night trek. Students encountered everything from sloths to more intense wildlife like green vipers, tarantulas, and scorpions. The adventure continued at the coast in Manuel Antonio National Park, where the jungle met the Pacific Ocean, providing a firsthand look at crocodiles and monkeys in their natural habitats.
Culture was experienced through more than just sightseeing; it was tasted and touched. At local organic farms, students milked cows, prepared coffee beans, and even tried making sugar cane candy and chocolate. A
highlight was a cooking lesson where students learned the art of making authentic empanadas, followed by a visit to a local Catholic Church where the group received a special shout-out from the priest during a Spanish Mass.
“I had zero cooking experience, so of course I got picked to make the dough,” Senior Jazryel Trejo, said.
“There were a few struggles along the way, but now I can confidently say I’ve mastered the art of shaping and folding a pretty solid empanada.”
Whether it was flying through the trees on an air-tram or navigating the mangroves by boat, the trip pushed students to step outside their usual routines. The journey ended with a cultural celebration of music and dancing overlooking the lights of San Jose, marking the end of a trip that focused on bonding, language immersion, and a new appreciation for the environment.

FASTEST CREATURE A sloth hangs in a tropical forest in Costa Rica. During their stay, Mater Dei’s science department stumbled upon a number of animals in their natural habitat. INTO THE DARK Mater Dei science students explore the Costa Rican forest at night while learning about different local wildlife and ecosystems. This adventure gave the students a hands-on activity they will never forget.

On April 14. The Student Publications had their annual banquet, celebrating the finish of the yearbook.

Banquet brought together all of Mater Dei’s student publications staff from both yearbook and newspaper on Tuesday, April 14 to celebrate the completion of the yearbook and recognize the hard work and accomplishments of the staff throughout the school year. During the banquet, students enjoyed food, spent time with friends and received awards for their dedication and effort.
Throughout the night, students looked back on the memories they made while creating this year’s publications. Awards were handed out to recognize leadership, creativity and teamwork within the program.
“In all, I’ve really enjoyed my experience in yearbook from meeting new people to taking on new responsibilities,” senior and Co-Editorin-Chief Paige Deiparine said. “Even though I
would be stepping down from being co-editorin-chief this year, I’m excited to see what next year editors will accomplish and wish them all the best.”
Freshman Emilio Gonzalez felt the banquet showed how supportive the Student Publications community is.
“The Student Pubs banquet was such a fun and memorable night,” Gonzalez said.
“It was amazing to see so many talented and hardworking people being recognized for everything they’ve contributed throughout the year.”
The banquet gave students a chance to celebrate the end of the year together, recognize all the work that went into making the publications successful and celebrate the completion of the yearbook.

On May 22-23, the Mater Dei Choral Program performed their last concert, Coffee House: A Night on the Red Carpet.
The Mater Dei Choral Program hosts its annual closing concert for the school year with Coffeehouse. Coffeehouse is a weekend concert showcasing various talents, from solos to group numbers, dancing class performances, and meaningful last memories for all choirs. Each year, Coffeehouse has a new theme for the choirs to follow; with this year’s being “A Night on the Red Carpet.” Through this theme, students commemorated iconic stars with music from classic artists and from unforgettable films.
Coffeehouse is a singer’s opportunity to showcase their unique gift. Performing alone on stage can be frightful, but will always be a rewarding thrill.
“Performing is both nerve wracking and the most exhilarating feeling,” senior Evan Nguyen said. “When you actually hold the mic and see the audience, it feels like a whole other world compared to practice. For me, singing is how I feel alive and how I share a glimpse of my life with others.”
These concert nights are filled with tremendous talent. All choir students are not only there to perform, but also to provide loving support for their peers. The nights are filled with great energy from the performers and the audience.
“My favorite thing about Coffeehouse is how supportive everyone in the choir is,” junior Sean McCaw said. “Every performance was filled with people cheering each other on, which made the environment feel really welcoming. Because of that support, I felt a lot more confident and
excited to perform on the Coffeehouse stage.”
All the students who perform that night have a great passion for singing and love for choir. Joining the choir program leads these students to familiarize themselves with the stage and show off the immense talent they have.
“I have always loved singing and have always wanted to join choir,” junior Madelyn Boyle said. “I’ve met some of my closest friends there and I look forward to it every day. Being a part of the program has allowed my passion to deepen and appreciate every moment on stage with those I love.”
