LET TER FROM THE DIRECTOR We have braved the polar vortex and Spring has sprung here at Mater Dei High School! Our winter season was full of accolades for each and every program within the performing arts, confirming the great force of the arts on this campus and beyond. Spring is a time of love and rebirth, and what better way to express these than through music. In the spirit of love, the performing arts programs have devoted their time and talents to serve those in our community near and far. The Music Academy Program was recently awarded on a national scale for its contributions to music education - we welcome the Music Academy and the Marian Alliance Drumline tonight to share the growth they’ve made within this award winning program; the Theatre program and its Chuckles 4 Charity events has raised hundreds of dollars to support theatre education programs for the underserved; the Dance Program will travel to Mexico to serve underprivileged youth, teaching dance and extending the Mater Dei virtues of compassion and service; the Song Program provided pajamas, gifts, and love to Orange County Youth battling homelessness, broken homes, and illness; and finally, the Choir Program continuously provides their gift of song to those in assisted living and hospitals as well as supporting various organizations through its philanthropic event, Coffeehouse. We are blessed indeed and so proud of the efforts our artists are making to create a kinder, more loving world each and every day. And so, whether you are here with the one you love, or are still seeking the muse to your sonnets, we wish you nothing but love and merriment all your days. Take a moment to relish God’s wonderful love letter to us in the songs you will hear and the beautiful faces of the musicians on stage tonight.

LET TER FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to the 4th Annual La Primavera Instrumental Music Concert. This evening, we join in a musical celebration as our various performance ensembles share their musical talents and artistry with you. It has been truly rewarding and a pleasure to see the students’ continued growth this year. From those who picked-up a saxophone for the very first time, to the numerous first place awards and musical artist recognitions, our students have been passionate and dedicated to excellence every step of the way. As a Mater Dei community, we are truly blessed and thankful to share in so many accomplishments and successes this school year. I would like to extend a personal “thank you” to all of our music instructors who have contributed in making this year amazing. They have been “instrumental” in creating new opportunities for student involvement and creativity within our Band, Orchestra, Percussion and Guitar programs. This is a true blessing as we continue to strive forward in ensuring all students have an unforgettable learning and spiritual experience at Mater Dei. Congratulations to our Associate Director of Instrumental Music, Mr. Taylor Smith, and the Music Academy staff for all of their success in the Music Academy and the Marian Alliance programs. We are now providing instrumental music to over 400 elementary and middle school students within our diocese. Commendations to our wonderful Mater Dei administration for their devoted support and the future vision for all Mater Dei Performing Arts as we await the coming of our new Performing Arts Center. My sincere gratitude to our Executive Director of Performing Arts, Mr. Scott Melvin, and our Performing Arts Department Assistant, Mrs. Marisa Winch, for their continued support and commitment to our program. Lastly, thank you to all of our students and families for the endless hours of dedication. Everyday I feel blessed for having the opportunity to work with such incredible young people and the amazing support from their parents, family and friends. Congratulations to our Senior Class of 2019, and may God continue to watch over them in all their future endeavors! Enjoy the evening and welcome to our 2019 La

La Primavera Program Jazz Band Afternoon, by Pat Metheny, arr. Bob Curnow Pat Metheny has won countless awards as “Best Jazz Guitarist” , including three gold records for albums, “Still Life, Letter from Home,” and “Secret Story.” He has also won 20 Grammy Awards in 12 different categories including Best Rock Instrumental, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, Best Instrumental Composition. “Afternoon” is a slow, swinging, lovely, warm, relaxed chart in the style of that famous Neal Hefti swing ballad.

Watermelon Man, by Herbie Hancock, arr. Mike Kamuf Growing up in the ‘40s and ‘50s in Chicago, Herbie Hancock was around street vendors, including the “watermelon men,” who peddled the fruit. This provided the title and musical inspiration for the song. In the liner notes to his Takin’ Off album, Hancock wrote: “In reflecting on my childhood, I recalled the cry of the watermelon man making his rounds through the back streets and alleys of Chicago’s South Side. The wheels of his wagon beat out the rhythm on the cobblestones.”

Marian Alliance Drumline Storm Chasers, Original Composition by Bruno Cilloniz

Guitar I (Block 6) Surf Rider, by Nokie Edwards The Lively Ones are an instrumental surf rock band from USA, active in Southern California in the 1960s. They played live mostly in California and Arizona. They recorded for Del-Fi Records, with production from Bob Keane, and recorded mostly cover songs, but there were a few originals. Their 1963 song “Surf Rider” was featured in the final sequence as well as the end credits of Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 film Pulp Fiction.

Guitar I (Block 4) California Dreamin’, by John Phillips and Michelle Phillips This song was first recorded by Barry McGuire. However, the best-known version is by the Mamas & the Papas, who sang backup on the original version and released it as a single in 1965. The song is No. 89 in Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The lyrics of the song express the narrator’s longing for the warmth of Los Angeles during a cold winter in New York City. “California Dreamin’” was certified as a Gold Record (single) by the Recording Industry Association of America in June 1966 and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001.

Guitar Media Production Walk Don’t Run, by Johnny Smith An instrumental composition written and originally recorded by jazz guitarist Johnny Smith in 1954, “Walk Don’t Run” was later adapted and re-recorded by Chet Atkins in 1956, and was a track on the LP Hi-Fi In Focus. This arrangement was the inspiration for the version by The Ventures in 1960 (though the Ventures’ arrangement is recognizably different from Atkins’ finger-picked style) which achieved world-wide recognition, being regarded by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the top 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time.

Pipeline, by The Chantays “Pipeline” is an instrumental surf rock song recorded in July 1962. The tune, originally called “Liberty’s Whip”, was renamed after the band members saw a surfing movie showing scenes of the Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii. Fitting in with the popular surfing craze of the time, it swiftly rose up the Billboard Pop charts, reaching #4, and becoming a classic hit of its time. “Pipeline” is notable for using Alberti bass arpeggios.

Hawaii Five-O, by Morton Stevens The Ventures recorded this instrumental theme for the long-running procedural police drama of the same name (1968-1980) about detectives Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord) and Dan Williams (James MacArthur) who worked the Hawaiian islands beat. It was composed by Morton Stevens, who started out as an arranger/ conductor for Sammy Davis Jr. and became director of music for CBS on the West Coast. Aside from Hawaii Five-O, he has also composed music for popular dramas like Police Woman and Gunsmoke.

Strings Orchestra Serenade for Strings - Finale, by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, arr. Carrie Lane Gruselle This stunning arrangement truly captures the essence of Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings. Featuring the last movement, the work begins with a grand and legato Maestoso, which is then followed by the light and energized Allegro con spirito.

I Dreamed a Dream, by Claude-Michel Schönberg, arr. James Kazik “Les Miserables, which features the song, “I Dreamed a Dream,” is a popular musical that opened in London in December, 1985. The producer was Cameron Mackintosh. Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel wrote the lyrics in French, while Herbert Kretzmer translated them into English. Claude-Michel Schonberg composed the music. The work is based on the book of the same title by 19th century French writer Victor Hugo.

Symphonic Concert Band Selections from, Standard of Excellence, by Bruce Pearson Bruce Pearson is an internationally recognized music educator, author, composer, clinician and conductor. His newest band method, Tradition of Excellence, offers the most advanced interactive curriculum that is second-to-none. His best selling band method, Standard of Excellence, has provided a solid foundation for scores of music education programs around the world. His extensive correlated repertoire has helped music educators expand their programs to reinforce learning through performance.

Music Academy Rockin’ Rollin’ River, by Mark Williams Mark Williams, a composer, educator and musician composed Rockin’ Rollin River to feature the low brass section on the blues progression. With small solo features from the flute, clarinet, and alto saxophone, a second melody rolls into the picture. The famous American Folk melody of Shenandoah Valley is played in a canon as it swings to the end.

Navarro, by Robert W. Smith Inspired by the rich history and musical heritage of the Lone Star State, Navarro takes you to San Antonio, Texas. Jose Antonio Navarro (1795-1871) was one of the only two native-born Texans to sign the Texas Declaration of Independence and served on the committee that wrote the first Texas constitution in 1836.

SwashBuckler’s March, by Mark Williams This high-spirited march begins with a catchy melody that will immediately grab your attention. Syncopation and light scoring make for an exhilarating second strain. Woodwinds take the lead at the trio with a majestic theme before the brass create a dogfight-style dialog between the two choirs of instruments. A recap of the trio brings the band together for a rousing close.

Honors Wind Ensemble Glorious America March, by Karl L. King In 1909, King joined the band of Robinson’s Famous Circus as a baritone horn player. For the next 10 years, King played baritone and trumpet in and also conducted a variety of circus bands. Although he had no formal training in conducting, he became famous throughout the United States for his band conducting. But he is even better known as a composer of band music. By the end of his career he had composed almost 300 pieces, including marches, gallops, rags, hops, waltzes, serenades, and other types of music. King rivals John Philip Sousa as a composer of band music, and actually composed more pieces than Sousa. His compositions were intended to be played by a seated band, not by a marching unit, and he did not limit himself to military music but also wrote “good-sounding, marches for high school bands.

West Highlands Sojourn, by Robert Sheldon i. Stow-On-the World ii.Bradford Ballade iii. On Derwentwater Inspired by the composer’s journey through the western hill country of England and Wales, this piece borrows from folk melodies he heard on a river near the Scottish border. Each movement is named after a town in England and written in a very tradition English Wind Band style. The movements follow a fast-slowfast pattern. I. Stow-on-the-World is a small market town at the junction of seven major roads that run through the Cotswold in Gloucestershire in the Southwest of England. II. Bradford Ballade is currently one of the largest populated areas in the Northern area of England and was one of the centers of the Industrial Revolution. III. Derwentwater is one of the largest lakes in the Lake District National Park in the Northwest of England.

Full Orchestra Capriccio Espagnol, by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, arr. Richard Meyer Hailed by Tchaikovsky as “a colossal masterpiece of instrumentation,” Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol has delighted audiences since its premier in 1887. The melodies used in the piece go back to themes sketched for a virtuosic solo violin work with orchestral accompaniment. After changing his mind, Rimsky-Korsakov decided to make the work a display piece for the entire orchestra.

Mater Dei High School Alma Mater arr. Neil Anderson-Himmelspach (b. 1976)

Giuseppe and Pietro Cefalu have been making waves in Huntington Beach for years now. While the setting and the site are casual, the food is classic Italian and the service warm and friendly.

The Cefalus proudly serve only the freshest seafood (selected daily), an array of pastas with mouthwatering sauces, as well as signature eggplant dishes and a famous calamari fritti. This bustling favorite with locals is sure to please. Reservations are recommended for parties of four or more.

After culinary school in Italy, the Cefalu brothers worked in the restaurant industry for years, Pietro as Head Chef of some of the finest restaurants in Italy. In the early 1980's the brothers brought their authentic Italian cuisine to America, Giuseppe working on the West Coast, until finally opening Mangia Mangia in 1987. You could easily drown yourself in Marinara at Mangia Mangia, but keep an eye on the beloved restaurant's daily specials and you'll find all manner of Sicilian favorites. Look for the bucatini with roasted cauliflower, pine nuts and raisins that hews as closely to North Africa as it does to the Italian coast. Or opt for the swordfish with grilled eggplant that's dressed with bright, acidic citrus. When you walk in, the smell of garlic makes your mouth water. One of the two Sicilian brothers greets you at the door. The place is a typical mom and pop restaurant, nothing too flashy other than the flat screen playing tour videos of Italy.
