LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR We have braved the polar vortex and Spring has sprung here at Mater Dei High School! Our winter season was full of accolades for each and every program within the performing arts, confirming the great force of the arts on this campus and beyond. Spring is a time of love and rebirth, and what better way to express these than in song and dance. In the spirit of love, the performing arts programs have devoted their time and talents to serve those in our community near and far. Our Dance Program will travel to Mexico to serve underprivileged youth during Gala de Danza, teaching dance and extending the Mater Dei virtues of compassion and service; the Music Academy Program was recently awarded on a national scale for its contributions to music education; the Theatre program and its Chuckles 4 Charity events has raised hundreds of dollars to support theatre education programs for the underserved; the Song Program provided pajamas, gifts, and love to Orange County Youth battling homelessness, broken homes, and illness; and the Choir Program continuously provides their gift of song to those in assisted living and hospitals as well as supporting various organizations through its philanthropic event, Coffeehouse. We are blessed indeed and so proud of the efforts our artists are making to create a kinder, more loving world each and every day. And so, we welcome you to the transformed Meruelo Athletic Center this evening to share the great work of the dance program. Each piece presents a different story - stories of struggle, stories of peace, stories of transformation. We hope these stories resonate with you as you experience them and as you leave this space and enter into your own story. Thank you again for being with us today and throughout the entire year - you fuel our creativity and passion.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to Mater Dei Dance Program’s Spring Dance Concert: SOUL STORIES. Tonight’s performance will highlight the many talents of the Dance Program students. For some, it will be their premiere experience performing in a front of an audience. For others, it will serve as an emotional culmination of nearly a year’s worth of rehearsals, rallies, competitions, off-campus performances, and the like. Students in Dance I will showcase their efforts in “Formation” and “Bruises.” They have grown tremendously over the course of the year, learning about the foundations of dance and the science behind it. Dance II will be seen performing both on stage & on screen as their Fall Semester “Dance for Camera” projects are featured. From their initial written & choreographic proposals, to the final cuts presented tonight, these students effectively collaborated in directing, choreographing, filming, and dancing in these impactful short films. Routines from Dance Team and All Male Hip Hop will highlight the numerous group and solo routines we have competed throughout our very fruitful competition season. We anticipate continuing this success at our final competition coming up on March 24th at CADTD State. Points at these competition are accrued, in part, by how effectively the routines utilize the entirety of a regulation-size basketball court. To maintain the integrity of these pieces, we have transformed the Meruelo Athletic Center tonight in order to showcase these routines in their original form. Special thanks to Greg Martin, Robert Conrad, and Jacob Nguyen for making our dancers shine under the Meruelo lights! Tonight’s program also features special guest performers from Endeavor School of the Arts, located in Costa Mesa, and Momentum Dance Center from Yorba Linda. We are thrilled to have them join us, sharing their passions and representing the next generation of dance artists throughout Orange County! From these special guest performers, to our elective students and seasoned Dance Team & All Male Hip Hop members, we truly hope you are able to connect with the Soul Stories presented here tonight. We welcome you to join us outside on Heisman Lane directly after the show for our post-performance reception, as we celebrate the efforts of our talented student-artists. Finally, tonight’s production could not have been made possible without support from the following people, whom I would like to personally thank: The Mater Dei Dance families for their continued enthusiasm, helpfulness, and love that has carried me through the year. Mr. Scott Melvin, for your consistent leadership and openness to bringing my visions to fruition. Mrs. Marisa Winch, for your tireless efforts in keeping the wheels of this operation turning (and always doing so with a grateful heart!) Ms. Paige Ortiz, Dance Assistant, for your brilliant choreography, presence, and for loving dance as much as I do. Mr. Mitch Villareal, All Male Hip Hop Coach, for continuously challenging the boys to be their best, and relentlessly mentoring them along the way. The Mater Dei administration, for their continued belief in this program and support of the transformational power of the arts. And to my family: Thank you for never questioning my passion and desire to design my dreams through dance. The confidence you instilled in me to follow my unique path is what I hope to pass along to my students, in whatever vocation they may choose. Finally, to my students: It has been an honor and a joy witnessing your growth both as artists and individuals over the past year. I love you all and want to thank you for trusting me on your dance journeys. As you prepare for tonight’s performance, remember: You are already enough. You have nothing to prove, and everything to share. Let your soul speak while you dance, and the rest will follow.

And with that, sit back, relax, and enjoy Mater Dei Dance Program’s Spring Dance Concert: SOUL STORIES. Sincerely in Mater Dei, Kristina Marquez, Director of Dance Programs

Through the generous arrangement of Mater Dei Dance parent and Artistic Director/Founder Christina Lyon, Mater Dei students will work directly with underprivileged youth in the Los Cabos community, teaching various dance techniques to the students at Danza Que da Esperanza, a local dance studio. They will also have the opportunity to learn from worldclass professional dancers, collaborate with students from the Glorya Kaufman School of Dance at USC, and showcase their own talents during the opening sequence of the Gala, held at the beautiful Viceroy Hotel Los Cabos. Mangia Mangia Restaurant Reviews: Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind, authentic Italian restaurant, owned and operated by two brothers from Sicily. Giuseppe and Pietro Cefalu have been making waves in Huntington Beach for years now. While the setting and the site are casual, the food is classic Italian and the service warm and friendly.

The Cefalus proudly serve only the freshest seafood (selected daily), an array of pastas with mouthwatering sauces, as well as signature eggplant dishes and a famous calamari fritti. This bustling favorite with locals is sure to please. Reservations are recommended for parties of four or more.

After culinary school in Italy, the Cefalu brothers worked in the restaurant industry for years, Pietro as Head Chef of some of the finest restaurants in Italy. In the early 1980's the brothers brought their authentic Italian cuisine to America, Giuseppe working on the West Coast, until finally opening Mangia Mangia in 1987. You could easily drown yourself in Marinara at Mangia Mangia, but keep an eye on the beloved restaurant's daily specials and you'll find all manner of Sicilian favorites. Look for the bucatini with roasted cauliflower, pine nuts and raisins that hews as closely to North Africa as it does to the Italian coast. Or opt for the swordfish with grilled eggplant that's dressed with bright, acidic citrus. When you walk in, the smell of garlic makes your mouth water. One of the two Sicilian brothers greets you at the door. The place is a typical mom and pop restaurant, nothing too flashy other than the flat screen playing tour videos of Italy.
