LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
Welcome to the 2019-20 school year – it promises to be exciting! I am blessed to be surrounded daily by some of the hardest-working, most involved and passionate students on campus. Our amazing youth have been working diligently and throwing themselves into their art to make beautiful, deep and rich music. To give you a taste of their work ethic and extraordinary dedication consider that in just the few beginning weeks of this academic year they have formed a cappella groups and barbershop groups, performed at the Festival of Children, provided music for our beautiful Mater Dei masses, auditioned for the Addams Family (our upcoming Mater Dei musical production), sang the National Anthem at our football games, auditioned for Madrigal Feast solos, and prepared for our Fall Concert! Looking ahead we have the glorious annual Christmas Celebration and Madrigal Feast at Chapman University. Without skipping a beat, we will spend the winter and spring participating in local choral festivals, providing music for audiences large and small, welcoming the next generation of MD choir students through Jr. High Honor Choir, and preparing for a grand tour of Italy where we will sing in some of the world’s most renown, magnificent cathedrals and venues. We are grateful for our hard-working staff including our Associate Director, Ms. Amanda Bistolfo who so wonderfully teaches and prepares Cabaletta, Concert Choir, Handbells, and helps us keep things organized and on-track; Mr. Kent Helwig, our amazing collaborative artist who makes us better on every level; and Mr. Stefan Miller, our Vocal Conservatory Director who, while performing from afar on tour, still makes time to help our Mater Dei Vocal Conservatory run smoothly. Thank you also to our Vocal Conservatory staff who every week give our students lessons and vocal training to prepare them for auditions and masterclasses, and give them the tools to accomplish their immediate and future goals. We are deeply indebted to our Choir Parent Coordinators, Mrs. Lisa DeLong and Mrs. Christine Ludovico, for their service and coordination which helps us provide extraordinary experiences for our students. We are also grateful for our Mater Dei Administration and the unending support and advocacy of our Performing Arts Executive Director Mr. Scott Melvin and Department Assistant Mrs. Marisa Winch (’96). My family and I are grateful to have found a home at Mater Dei where the arts are so valued and generously supported by both the school community and the MD families. Mater Dei truly is a peerless and inspiring place where students can grow, thrive, and succeed.

full of joy. Through dance and song, the visual and aural, and playing in every sense of the word, it is our hope that you may quiet the cares of a noisy world behind and find peace in our halls. It is our mission here in the arts to
empower ambassadors of change through artistic expression, engaging our community to experience, reflect and react. Just as a kaleidoscope, we pray our events shift the lens of your perception, adding new opportunities to
wonder and dream. And as we dream of the imminent construction of the Monarch Masterpiece, our new home for the performing arts, we give thanks for the countless patrons, alumni, grandparents and all who support our young artists down the path of excellence. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM STUDENT JOSEPH NGUYEN SENIOR — PIANO AND PERCUSSION

FRESHMAN — FLUTE
Q: When did you start music? A: I started playing the flute in fifth grade when I joined the band class at my school. I had previously taken piano lessons before then, but I had known since second grade that I wanted to play the flute. Q: What have you gained from the Instrumental Music program? A: It has improved my flute playing because of the opportunity to play more advanced music, and has helped me to become a much more confident player; I am not afraid to play by myself or in a small group anymore. By being a part of marching band, I have met some of my best friends and had the chance to go to football games, rallies, and other Mater Dei events that I would not have otherwise attended.
Q: When did you start music and what first inspired you? A: I started music when I was about 4, but didn't really feel inspired to play until around my eighth grade year when I started to delve into music and actually listen to great composers. Q: What do you love about being in Instrumental Music? A: Being in the program has allowed me to work with some great instructors who were heavily involved in the music scene themselves and constantly push me to become better. I was able to explore a lot of different instruments and understand music better. Q: Do you see yourself continuing music in college? A: Yes, I'm going to major in Jazz Performance and Computer Science.
Q: Is there a special moment you feel you will cherish forever? A: I will forever cherish my first day of marching band camp. Right when I stepped into the band room, I was welcomed by the drum major, Jackie, and she immediately made me feel at home. At this moment, I realized this is where I will be spending much of the next four years of my life, making memories as well as music.
NICHOLAS LISING SENIOR — TRUMPET
Q: What first inspired you to play the trumpet? A: I first started playing piano when I was 7 years old. It wasn’t until I was 10 that I started playing trumpet for school. A number of my uncles and aunts either play an instrument or sing, so I believed that playing an instrument would help me to be closer to my family. Q: Is there a special moment you feel you will cherish forever? A: When the band travelled to Hawaii during spring break of my sophomore year, the friends I had in my room made that trip unforgettable for me. One night, we ate chicken wings on the balcony, just looking out into the city and listening to music from our portable speaker. It was probably one of the best experiences I have ever had. Q: Do you see yourself continuing music in college? A: I don’t plan to study music as a major or minor, but I would really like to play the trumpet in the pep band.

We recently sat down with our new director and the rest of the faculty to find out a little more about their background and why they love being at Mater Dei. Here’s what they had to say.

Q: Why do you love choral & vocal music?
Q: How has choral & vocal music affected your life?
A: I love choir! There is nothing like the feeling of voices coming together, could be ten voices or two hundred - usually with some of your best friends, singing, creating amazing harmony and beautiful music together. It’s incredible to be able to create something from nothing - no instruments you hold or play, just the sound of the human voice.
A: I love the choral community, the sound itself, and the ability to accomplish things in a group that I couldn’t possibly do alone. While conducting during an assistantship after graduating college, I remember standing in front of a choir and realizing that I was truly happy and doing what I was meant to do, and I still feel that way when I get up in front of a choir today.
Q: What do you love most about working at MD?

A: T he kids at Mater Dei are awesome! I love their dedication to everything they do!
A: T he students, of course! But also, the support from administration and the community. Plus, our students have access to so many opportunities within the program.
FUN FACT: I ’m obsessed with the ocean. I was a diver in high school and am currently an advanced scuba diver.

Q: How did you get into vocal music?
Q: W hy do you love working at Mater Dei?
A: I joined choir as a freshman in high school because my brother said it was cool. I was the worst of the worst, but I practiced before school, during lunch and after school to match pitch. As an adult, I can’t imagine doing anything else that brings me as much joy as singing & teaching voice. No where else do I feel as alive as when I’m on stage.
A: H ere at Mater Dei, as a working musician and educator, I really enjoy sharing my passion for music with students and strive to be creative in communicating musical concepts.
Q: What do you love most about working at MD? A: I love being able to impart knowledge & share my joy and passion with the students, while helping them find their own voice and passion. FUN FACT: I am currently on the Broadway tour of “Spongebob the Musical” 22
Q: What is the best part about working with students? A: M ost of all, witnessing a student’s transformation, their commitment to excellence, seeing and hearing their artistic growth is exhilarating for me and is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work. FUN FACT: My other car used to be a monorail.
Mangia Mangia Restaurant Reviews: Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind, authentic Italian restaurant, owned and operated by two brothers from Sicily. Giuseppe and Pietro Cefalu have been making waves in Huntington Beach for years now. While the setting and the site are casual, the food is classic Italian and the service warm and friendly.
The Cefalus proudly serve only the freshest seafood (selected daily), an array of pastas with mouthwatering sauces, as well as signature eggplant dishes and a famous calamari fritti. This bustling favorite with locals is sure to please. Reservations are recommended for parties of four or more.
After culinary school in Italy, the Cefalu brothers worked in the restaurant industry for years, Pietro as Head Chef of some of the finest restaurants in Italy. In the early 1980's the brothers brought their authentic Italian cuisine to America, Giuseppe working on the West Coast, until finally opening Mangia Mangia in 1987. You could easily drown yourself in Marinara at Mangia Mangia, but keep an eye on the beloved restaurant's daily specials and you'll find all manner of Sicilian favorites. Look for the bucatini with roasted cauliflower, pine nuts and raisins that hews as closely to North Africa as it does to the Italian coast. Or opt for the swordfish with grilled eggplant that's dressed with bright, acidic citrus. When you walk in, the smell of garlic makes your mouth water. One of the two Sicilian brothers greets you at the door. The place is a typical mom and pop restaurant, nothing too flashy other than the flat screen playing tour videos of Italy.
