Letter from the Executive Director Welcome to another Winter season of artistry here at Mater Dei High School! We have experienced an incredible Fall season full of accolades for each and every program within the performing arts, confirming the great force of the arts on this campus and beyond. As we look forward to the great Christmastide, we are reminded that all good gifts stem from that initial gift of Christ in our midst, and we offer all that we do with great joy and immense thanks. We give thanks for the Music Academy Program which was recently awarded on a national scale for its contributions to music education; We give thanks to the Theatre program and its Chuckles 4 Charity events which raise hundreds of dollars to support theatre education programs for the underserved; We give thanks for the Dance Program which will travel to Mexico to serve underprivileged youth, teaching dance and extending the Mater Dei virtues of compassion and service; We thank the Song Program for providing pajamas, gifts, and love to Orange County Youth battling homelessness, broken homes, and illness; and finally, we give thanks to the Choir Program for providing their gift of song to those in assisted living and hospitals as well as supporting various organizations through its philanthropic event, Coffeehouse, which has benefited groups such as the Ronald McDonald House and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in the past. We are blessed indeed and so proud of the efforts our artists are making to create a kinder, more beautiful world each and every day. And so, a hearty HUZZAH!! to you and yours as you feast upon the delectable and the delicious, the sublime and the savory. May this Christmas Season bring you joy and appreciation for all the gifts in your life. We trust and hope our gift to you this evening will multiply tenfold as you take this cheer and love to the world. God bless and enjoy the show!!

Mr. Scott Melvin, Executive Director, Performing Arts

The Verkuylen Family wishes all the Mater Dei Performing Arts Families a Blessed Christmas holiday and Prosperous New Year

MATER DEI HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS

Madrigal Feast DIRECTOR’S WELCOME Good Evening and welcome to the Mater Dei High School Choral Music Department’s 29th Annual Madrigal Feast. This Evening you will be taken back to the year of our Lord 1612. We are in the height of the Renaissance, celebrating life, art, music and the birth of Jesus Christ. As with any recreation, we face certain philosophical questions about when to cease authenticity and begin practicality. With this in mind, we have added some modern touches to our royal feast, such as supplying our guests with the familiar fork, knife and spoon. During this era, each guest would have brought their own knife and used their fingers to eat. The custom of placing the knife blade inward at your setting tonight stems from these royal feasts when knights would place blades inward to show friendship and outward to show distrust of an enemy that might have been placed next to them by the King. There are many people to thank for helping put this beautiful evening together. Our executive board, under the leadership of Madrigal Feast Chairs Wayne and Julie Fort and Parent Council Chairs Teri Schulist and Leslie Van Dalsem, did an incredible job organizing everything you are experiencing tonight. Thank you for your ever present wit and keen eye for the details. Thanks also to Debbie Melvin, Rumelia Cortez and all the committee members working together to make this night beautiful and smooth. And to the student directors, Jonathan Lefevbre, Danika McKee, and Katey Osuna, I would like to extend a special thanks to you in this your final Madrigal Feast – we are all indebted to you for your leadership. The world has great things in store for you and I cannot wait to see your impact – God speed! And finally, to all the alumni present tonight and everyday within the Mater Dei Choral Music Program – I pray that you have had continued success in singing and ringing and that you are sharing the joy of music in your daily lives. Now sit back and enjoy your Madrigal Feast! Thank you all for attending tonight’s event and supporting choral music at Mater Dei. I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and all the joy in the coming year! God Bless,

Justin Miller, Director

Mangia Mangia Restaurant Reviews: Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind, authentic Italian restaurant, owned and operated by two brothers from Sicily. Giuseppe and Pietro Cefalu have been making waves in Huntington Beach for years now. While the setting and the site are casual, the food is classic Italian and the service warm and friendly.

The Cefalus proudly serve only the freshest seafood (selected daily), an array of pastas with mouthwatering sauces, as well as signature eggplant dishes and a famous calamari fritti. This bustling favorite with locals is sure to please. Reservations are recommended for parties of four or more.

After culinary school in Italy, the Cefalu brothers worked in the restaurant industry for years, Pietro as Head Chef of some of the finest restaurants in Italy. In the early 1980's the brothers brought their authentic Italian cuisine to America, Giuseppe working on the West Coast, until finally opening Mangia Mangia in 1987. You could easily drown yourself in Marinara at Mangia Mangia, but keep an eye on the beloved restaurant's daily specials and you'll find all manner of Sicilian favorites. Look for the bucatini with roasted cauliflower, pine nuts and raisins that hews as closely to North Africa as it does to the Italian coast. Or opt for the swordfish with grilled eggplant that's dressed with bright, acidic citrus. When you walk in, the smell of garlic makes your mouth water. One of the two Sicilian brothers greets you at the door. The place is a typical mom and pop restaurant, nothing too flashy other than the flat screen playing tour videos of Italy.

DANCE PROGRAM PROGRAM

SPOTLIGHT

In April 2019, our Mater Dei Dance Program will make history.

“I’m really looking forward to this amazing opportunity

“It is a great honor that our Dance Team has been awarded

(especially in my senior year), helping complete Gala de

the invaluable opportunity as the first high school dance

Danza’s philanthropic mission to inspire the next generation

program to partake in the prestigious Gala de Danza in Los Cabos, Mexico” notes Mater Dei Director of Dance Kristina Marquez. “Not only will our students be able to extend the Mater Dei virtues of compassion and service through their philanthropic efforts, but they will do so utilizing their

of dancers. I can’t wait to perform with my All Male Hip Hop teammates and create lifelong memories dancing abroad.” – Anthonie Chavez, All Male Hip Hop Captain, Class of 2019 The Dance Programs offers elective courses for all levels of dancers, as well as the Nationally-ranked Dance Team and All Male Hip Hop Teams, under the direction of Ms. Kristina

Through the generous arrangement of Mater Dei Dance parent and Artistic Director/Founder Christina Lyon, Mater Dei students will work directly with underprivileged youth in the Los Cabos community, teaching various dance techniques to the students at Danza Que da Esperanza, a local dance studio. They will also have the opportunity to learn from worldclass professional dancers, collaborate with students from the Glorya Kaufman School of Dance at USC, and showcase their own talents during the opening sequence of the Gala, held at the beautiful Viceroy Hotel Los Cabos. Our students will be exposed to rich collaborative affairs which transcend languages, movement styles, and cross-cultural backgrounds.

Mater Dei

Unending thanks to the Mater Dei High School Administration, Faculty and Staff for their steadfast support of the Choral Music Department.

Your strength fuels our creativity.

To Scott Melvin: Many of us would not be here if it weren’t for your incredible leadership and vision. Things that most others would refuse to attempt,

you tackle head on. It is that conviction and confidence that has built this program to where it is today. I continue to cherish working with you, and hope it continues for many years. A big thank you is also due to your better half, Deb, for her continued work organizing the tickets and tables. She accomplishes a job that seems impossible with ease! I wish you, Deb, and your three beautiful girls a blessed holiday!

To Kent Helwig: What you bring to the Choral Program and to Mater Dei as a whole cannot be measured. The professionalism and experience you bring to anything and everything you do is a true inspiration. I speak for the students and the other faculty when I say we all love you and all that you bring to everything artistic. I am so grateful for everything that you do!

To Amanda Bistolfo: Thank you for all that you do to balance out the choir department. You have such wonderful skills that are such a magnificent compliment to what I bring to choral music. It is a blessing to have you here at Mater Dei.

To Marisa Winch: We are so blessed to have you as part of our Performing Arts Family. I am ever grateful for the countless hours you put in to make sure that things run smoothly behind the scenes. Thank you for your patience, your efforts, and your grace. I hope this is your first Madrigal Feast of many!

To Wayne and Julie Fort: Thank you for your continued work as Madrigal Feast Chairs. You have taken on this challenge with style and grace. It is

astonishing how you have made such an enormous amount of work seem easy. You have been such an absolute pleasure to work with, and I look forward to one more year of your leadership.

To All of the Parent Volunteers: Mater Dei simply has the best parents around – period. You all go beyond your call and execute things to perfection.

Thank you for making this night magical for your kids and giving them the opportunity to shine. It is because of you that they perform – Bravo to you all!

To the Students: Your work, your talent, your commitment, and the joy that you bring to your art continues to inspire me. I have the best job in the

world, and that is thanks to each and every one of you. Also, thank you for the model that you set for the Mater Dei Community. I pray for continued excellence in all you do. Toi, Toi, Toi – Be brave, be daring, but above all, be alive on the stage tonight!

To My Family: I’m such a lucky man to have family like you. My beautiful wife Andrea, you are the rock in my life, I do not know what I would do without you. To sweet Tenley and to charming Mason, I cannot wait until the day you can witness this incredible event!

To all of you – Merry Christmas! Justin Miller, Director of Choral Music 30
