LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR I hope you are prepared for an inspiring year of great artistry from our talented singers, players, and dancers - their energy is palpable as they prepare pieces which will move you, pieces which will fill you with joy, and pieces which will transform you. It is our great privilege to offer our gifts endowed by the Spirit for your enjoyment and enlightenment. With nearly half of the campus involved in the performing arts, we are broadening what it means to be a Monarch and charting a course for a resurgence in the arts not just on the corner of Bristol and Edinger, but throughout our local community and Southern California. Our Music Academy, under the direction of Mr. Taylor Smith, continues to grow and serves nearly 700 elementary and junior high students each week. We look forward to welcoming many of these fine young instrumentalists and the Mater Dei Jazz Band, under the direction of Mr. Fernando Martinez, at the Choir Spring Concert at the Reneé and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall on March 13. And speaking of the choirs, they will premiere a new work penned by a great friend of Mater Dei, the incredible composer Richard Burchard. The work was commissioned for the choir’s magnificent Madrigal Feast, under the direction of Mr. Justin Miller - we can’t wait to share it with you. The dance team is busy preparing to participate in the internationally acclaimed Gala de Danza in Los Cabos, Mexico - the first high school dance team to be invited to this prestigious event. In addition to this great event, the dance teams, song teams and colorguard are heading into the competition season with some exciting routines and truly artistic programs. It promises to be a very successful season, and so we wish all the dancers our best as they push for excellence from day one. All this is possible only with the superior instruction from our fine directors and instructors, Ms. Kristina Marquez (Dance), Mrs. Aubrey Price (Song), and Mr. Chadd Hartman (Colorguard). We are continuing to build the Mater Dei MasterClass Series, welcoming professional artists and college professors on campus to work with your sons and daughters. The benefits of this program have been immediate, with Mater Dei students receiving numerous scholarship offers, professional gigs, and coaching opportunities. This year, your students will work with directors from Chapman, UC Irvine, USC, Cal State Northridge, Bellarmine University, 3D Theatricals, the Chance Theatre, Operaworks, and many more - how fortunate we are. We do this for we believe that arts transform people into more complete versions of themselves by awakening creativity, fostering collaboration, and enlivening passion and determination. And so we invite you to sit back and enjoy the late Neil Simon’s comedic joy, Fools, produced by our new theatre director, Mrs. Lissa Slay, and under the direction of our new theatre teacher, Mrs. Andrea Fouts who comes to us from The Yorba Linda Spotlight Theatre Company and OCSA, who, in my humble opinion, is no fool at all. God Bless and enjoy the show!!

Director’s Notes Welcome to the Mater Dei Little Theatre! We’re delighted to share with you this charming play, written by the comic genius, Neil Simon. If you are unfamiliar with this play, I will warn you: this play will not solve the problems of the world, or touch on deep moral concerns, but it will absolutely add joy to your day! Sit back and enjoy as we take you to the village of Kulyenchikov, where there can even be wisdom found in the midst of goofy, silly, and semi-ridiculous situations. Our cast and crew have had a wonderful time creating this delightful play for you, and we hope you enjoy your time with us! Sincerely,

Mrs. Andrea Fouts Director

In service as your new Director of Theatre, it is my privilege to welcome you to the Theatre Department’s 2018-2019 season! The one running theme of this year’s theatrical programming could be stated as C O M I C. Our lighthearted season embraces the fullness of the human experience, with love and miscommunication in the late, great Neil Simon’s hidden gem, Fools – a play with the tagline “a comic fable.” We then move on to the all-school musical, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown based on a literal comic – and celebrating “Happiness” while flying with the Red Baron. Our Shakespeare in the Grotto offering is – you guessed it! – a comic romp through the kingdom of Navarre where young men have sworn off all distractions – including women – for a three-year period. Can they do it? Who knows? It will certainly be fun to watch them try in the delightful Love’s Labour’s Lost. Our Theatre Department also welcomes not only a new season of productions, but also a new season of personnel: in addition to myself, we welcome Mrs. Andrea Fouts as our theatre teacher and the director of Fools; Mr. Josh Nicols as our Head Coach of the Improv Comedy Troupe and Mr. Joey Busch (’14) as assistant/substitute coach. We welcome back the invaluable Ms. Alexi Thomas as our administrative assistant. We in the Theatre Department have a grand vision of programming within many of the structures set in place by our predecessors, including and embracing the wonderful space of this black box theatre. A space such as the Little Theatre is incredible and inspiring – there are so many audience and staging configurations to choose from, something much more challenging in a traditional proscenium theatre. Here, we have an opportunity to create an intimate, high-quality experience while working in close proximity to our audience. Our work in the Little Theatre is solid preparation for the black box theatre in the new Monarch Masterpiece performing arts center. In a look ahead to other Theatre programming, Shortsfest will be presented by the Advanced Theatre Arts classes as completely student-written and devised, developed as an ensemble. The spring Dr. Seuss Educational Tour, in honor of Read Across America, will be re-mounted and tour to several of our local area schools. The Improv Comedy Troupe, with its newly-formed Junior Varsity and Varsity teams, will host several Chuckles 4 Charity events throughout the year. Our Theatre Arts Club, under the presidential leadership of Kalusha Brutlag (’19) will announce dates for Theatre-related social events, drives, and charitable events throughout the year. She is ably assisted by Lauryn Lilly (Vice President, ’19), Danika McKee (Secretary, ’19), Paige Solano (Treasurer, ’20), Maria Contreras (Publicity Lead, ’19), Gwyneth Stolo (Social Events Coordinator, ’19), and Rory Dahl (Literary Manager, ’21).

Thank you for joining us this season. We look forward to an exciting year with these most excellent Monarchs!

Lissa Slay, M.S.Ed. Director of Theatre

Thank you, Mr. Neil Simon, for all that you have shared with us.

Kalusha has played Black Stache in Peter and The Starcatcher, Tituba in The Crucible, Mopsa in Winter’s Tale, Adrianna in Comedy of Errors, and Antigone in Antigone. Playing Slovitch has been so much fun. The rehearsal process has been such a blessing for Kalusha, as it has been a chance for her to learn and grow as a performer. Kalusha has really appreciated being able to work with all of her wonderful classmates and grow closer to them. She is very excited to perform today and thanks God for allowing her to have such an amazing and enriching experience.

Jay Beaumont Calvert (Magistrate) Beau is super excited to be playing the magistrate in Mater Dei’s production of Fools! He has previously played Sourdough Sam in SCR’s production of American Tall Tales, and the oblivious boyfriend in improvised hallmark movies, as well as a notable amount of smaller roles, including Kenickie in Pacific Palisades Theater’s Grease, and Hans in Pacific Conservatory’s Frozen. Beau would like to thank Chris Sullivan for putting him into and helping him through difficult situations, his parents, Kris and Jay Calvert for supporting him no matter how great the challenge, and his good friend Clayton for ensuring him that it was not in fact loss. He hopes you enjoy the show!

Kelli Chamberlain (Townsperson) Kelli Chamberlain is super excited to be a part of the all-school play Fools. Her memorable past roles include Matchmaker in Mulan and Nala in The Lion King. Her most recent leading role at Mater Dei is Dromio of Ephesus in The Comedy of Errors. Kelli is involved in both theatre arts and the music program, being a member of Chamber Singers and Advanced Theatre. Kelli would like to thank her family, friends, and fellow cast members for making this such a wonderful experience. Kelli would especially like to thank Mrs. Fouts for this incredible opportunity, Mrs. Slay, Ms. Thomas, and all involved in theatre for including her in this Mater Dei tradition.

CAST BIOS Noah Dang (Mishkin) Noah is absolutely ecstatic to be playing Mishkin in the Mater Dei production of Fools. His previous experience included small school musicals at Our Lady Queen of Angels. This will be his debut at Mater Dei, and he couldn’t be more excited. He’d like to thank Mrs. Fouts for being an amazing director and helping him grow and flourish as an actor, Mrs. Slay for being an amazing theatre teacher who will never fail to make him laugh, Ms. Thomas for coordinating the whole cast and crew for rehearsals, the designers, technicians, stagehands, and entire crew behind the scenes for truly making this whole production possible, and finally, the cast. Although he didn’t know most of them before the first rehearsal, they took him under their wing. The cast’s mentoring and friendship is truly more than he could ask for. Noah is excited to perform for you and hopes you enjoy the show.

Cynthia Garcia (Yenchna) Cynthia is thrilled to be playing Yenchna in this sensational production of Fools! Currently a junior at Mater Dei, she has been a part of the Theatre Arts Program for three years. She has had the opportunity to perform in The Crucible and The Winter’s Tale as an ensemble member. She is also a member of Concert Choir and the Speech and Debate team. First and foremost, she would like to thank her family for their endless support and love. She would be unable to achieve anything without her wonderful parents, awesome sister, and two lovely dogs. Cynthia is also grateful for her amazing friends who have helped her along her journey, Mrs. Fouts for being an exceptional director, Mrs. Slay for all of her guidance, Ms. Thomas for her organization, and the extremely talented cast and crew of this production. She hoeps u injoy the shoew!

Jennie Greco (Townsperson) Jennie is so excited to be a part of this program this year. Her dream is to go to a performance arts college in New York and discover new things about herself and how to improve in acting and singing. Jennie has always loved the arts and has been devoted to it ever since she was in her first play. Jennie has also traveled a lot for choir. She has been from Chicago to Spain to San Diego and will be going to Italy next year with the Mater Dei Choir Program. She is also on the varsity improv team here at school and was on the team last year. She loves to make people laugh while being able to act at the same time. Performing arts is what makes Jennie smile and she hopes that seeing this play will cause others to smile as well.

Caroline Kawabe (Sophia Zubritsky) Caroline Kawabe is more than excited to play Sophia Zubritsky in Mater Dei’s production of Fools during her sophomore year! She has been in 20+ productions prior to her role in Fools. Some of her past parts include Alice (Alice in Wonderland), Lily (Annie), Wickersham (Seussical), Pyramus (A Midsummer’s Night Dream), and one of the Witches (Macbeth). This is Caroline’s fourth time being in a production at Mater Dei and she is so thankful to have been given this opportunity. Caroline would like to give a big thank you to Mrs. Fouts, Mrs. Slay, Ms. Thomas, cast, and crew for making this show possible! Also, a huge thank you to her family, friends, and past theater coaches for helping her along the way. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Sebastian Ledesma (Leon Tolchinsky)

14

Sebastian Ledesma is super exciting to be in this show and is so proud of his cast members who helped him throughout the whole process. Some other roles he’s played include Man in Chair in The Drowsy Chaperone, Pugsly in The Addams Family, Bobby Mills in A Chorus Line, and Ram Sweeney in Heathers. He would like to thank the whole production crew because without them, this show would not be possible. He would also like to thank Mrs. Fouts for directing him and guiding him to success. He would also like to especially thank his loving family who always support him in everything he does no matter what. He hopes you enjoy the show! This one’s for you, Neil.

CAST BIOS Owen Logan (Snetsky) Owen is excited to be in his first Mater Dei performance as Snetsky in the production of Fools. Owen loves theatre as he has performed in numerous musicals and plays since kindergarten. In middle school, he took on the lead role of Edmund in Narnia, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and Captain Hook in Peter Pan. Over this past summer, Owen performed on the main stage at Mariners church VBS where he and other actors performed each day for kids for the week. Ironically, Owen was able to work under the direction of Mrs. Slay at the JCC in Shrek (numerous small roles) and Peter Pan where he played John. Owen is thrilled to work with Mrs. Slay again and wants to thank her for all of her support in the past and further developing his joy of performing. He also wants to thank Ms. Thomas and Ms Fouts for their support and dedication to the cast and play and Sara Lunsford, who pushes his acting, bringing out his very best. Mom & Dad- Forever & a day!

Gwen Smith (Lenya Zubritsky) Gwen is very excited to play Lenya Zubritsky in Mater Dei’s rendition of Fools by Neil Simon. Other characters she has had the opportunity to play include Rafiki from The Lion King, and the 11th Juror in Twelve Angry Women. She has also been involved with the Mater Dei theatre productions of Thoroughly Modern Millie, Crucible, Winter’s Tale, Comedy Of Errors, Antigone, Seussical and The Drowsy Chaperone. She has been involved in many other plays as a crew member, even gaining the chance to be a stage manager and lead for props and costumes. Gwen Smith would like to thank the director for casting and putting faith in her to play this character and her mother and best friends for always supporting her. She hopes you enjoy being a part of this show just as much as she does!

Gwyneth Stolo (Townsperson) Gwyneth, a senior at Mater Dei, is grateful to be playing a townsperson in Fools. She has previously been involved in many others shows here, most recently as a member of the Chorus in Antigone, Juror #12 in 12 Angry Women, and Antigonus in Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. She thoroughly enjoys the theatre program and receives a lot of great support from her family and friends. Gwyneth is a connoisseur of pasta, a frequent concert-goer, and an extreme dog lover. She hopes you enjoy the show and continue your support of the Mater Dei Theatre Arts program!

Nick Van Dalsem (Dr. Zubritski) Nick is very excited to be portraying Dr. Zubritsky in this year’s All-School Play, Fools. Previously, he has played the roles of Jack in Into the Woods, Thomas Putnam in the Crucible, Florizell in A Winter’s Tale, Angelo in the Comedy of Errors, Juror #10 in Twelve Angry Men, Robert in the Drowsy Chaperone, and most recently Tiresias in Antigone. He is a member of Chambers Singers, Improv Comedy Troupe, and is the ASB President this year. Nick would like to thank his wonderful parents and brothers for their support. He would also like to thank Mrs. Fouts, Mrs. Slay, and Mr. Melvin for their tireless help during this show.

Joshua Weed (Gregor Yousekevitch) Joshua is very excited and honored to be playing Count Yousekevitch, in this year’s all school play. He has worked onstage and backstage for other Mater Dei productions, such as The Drowsy Chaperone, Comedy of Errors, and Antigone. He has always enjoyed theatre and absolutely loves that this year’s play is a comedy because of the way that it can animate both the actors and the audience. He would like to thank his sister, who was the first one to get him involved with theatre. He would also like to thank his parents, who help and support him every day in everything they do. Lastly, he would like to thank Mrs. Fouts, Mrs. Slay, and Ms. Thomas for giving him this spectacular opportunity and for guiding him every step of the way. He hopes 15 that you enjoy this funny, quirky show.

Mangia Mangia Restaurant Reviews: Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind, authentic Italian restaurant, owned and operated by two brothers from Sicily. Giuseppe and Pietro Cefalu have been making waves in Huntington Beach for years now. While the setting and the site are casual, the food is classic Italian and the service warm and friendly.

The Cefalus proudly serve only the freshest seafood (selected daily), an array of pastas with mouthwatering sauces, as well as signature eggplant dishes and a famous calamari fritti. This bustling favorite with locals is sure to please. Reservations are recommended for parties of four or more.

After culinary school in Italy, the Cefalu brothers worked in the restaurant industry for years, Pietro as Head Chef of some of the finest restaurants in Italy. In the early 1980's the brothers brought their authentic Italian cuisine to America, Giuseppe working on the West Coast, until finally opening Mangia Mangia in 1987. You could easily drown yourself in Marinara at Mangia Mangia, but keep an eye on the beloved restaurant's daily specials and you'll find all manner of Sicilian favorites. Look for the bucatini with roasted cauliflower, pine nuts and raisins that hews as closely to North Africa as it does to the Italian coast. Or opt for the swordfish with grilled eggplant that's dressed with bright, acidic citrus. When you walk in, the smell of garlic makes your mouth water. One of the two Sicilian brothers greets you at the door. The place is a typical mom and pop restaurant, nothing too flashy other than the flat screen playing tour videos of Italy.

PROGRAM

SPOTLIGHT

Lissa Slay, Director of Theatre Arts

Q- When did your love for theatre begin to flourish? A- I was in 5th grade and my school bussed us out to a local community production of Annie, since our school did not have performing arts. During the production, Annie walked right in front of me and at that moment I thought ‘Wow, this is amazing. This is what I want to do and be able to share this with students, too’. Q- What steps did you take towards the end of high school and early college to further your passion for theatre? A- I ran the theatre department at my high school. I was also in all the performing arts- show choir, concert choir, literary magazine, advanced drama. I also did community theatre. Q- When you first began college, did you know you wanted to teach theater? A- I It was toward the end of college when I realized there was more to theater than just acting. I went on tour working for a children’s theater company, came home and realized ‘I want to keep working with kids. This is really fun and is what’s getting me up in the morning’. And so, 16 years after I got my first glimpse of the arts, I was able to bring busses of my students to a production of Annie and give them the experience I had in school. I’m really here for the teaching part- I want to teach. Article By: Amy Viers, Scarlet Scroll Contributor

Andrea Fouts, Theatre Teacher

Q- Tell me about your experiences in theatre. A- For 14 years, I ran a theatre company as the artistic director. I also taught musical theatre and voice at Orange County School of the Arts. In my spare time, I am also a private voice teacher. Q- Have you performed before? A- Yes. I started in the theatre performing, then in college I realized I really loved the behind the scenes. You know, directing and designing. That’s where it led me. Q- How is teaching different from actually performing? Q- I used to find joy in performing on stage. But now I find joy when my students are successful and when they have a break through and accomplish something on stage that they have never done before. I get just as much out of seeing my students grow as I did actually performing myself, so that’s how I knew I was meant to be a teacher.
