announce that we have been hard at work ensuring that remains the case by embarking on a capital campaign for a state of the art performing arts center to be built in the footprint of the Monarch Pavilion. With over 55,000 square feet of instructional space including wings dedicated to all disciplines and an incredible 800 seat theater, this Monarch Masterpiece promises to match the undeniable caliber of our student artists. Our singers, dancers, ringers and players will finally have a place to call home and you, our esteemed patrons, will have a place to truly appreciate the talents of your sons and daughters. We will continue to make you aware of developments in this great pursuit and hope you will join us when the time comes in supporting the arts at Mater Dei for today and for tomorrow. Until then, we invite you to enjoy the many performances and events the Performing Arts Department has to offer. From the roots of Shakespeare tonight to our final event in May, the effervescent Coffeehouse, there is something for everyone. All this is possible only with the superior instruction from our fine directors and instructors. Your students are benefiting not only from great teaching, but also the access to professionals in their field. In addition, with the introduction of the Mater Dei MasterClass Series, your young artists will be introduced to college directors, community and professional theatre directors, casting agents and producers with the intention of bolstering their arts education, as well as opening the possibilities of scholarships and casting opportunities. We are so appreciative to have you join us on this exercise, exploring doubt, exploring class and cultural memes, and exploring the entire human condition. We believe that arts transform people into more complete versions of themselves by awakening creativity, fostering collaboration, and enlivening passion and determination. We hope to illuminate the barriers of our social understanding and truly find how we all belong together in faith, hope and love. Thank you once more and have a great night!

Director’s Notes Twelve Angry Men was one of my favorite films growing up as it explored the question of Guilty or Not Guilty in a very raw, honest way. It is such a seemingly simple question, but so complex at the same time. I actually even wrote an adaptation of it, which received much literary and theatrical acclaim in Ms. Sweet’s Drama I class my Freshman year at (cough cough) Santa Margarita High School. I was always fascinated by the characters and their interaction as they tried to answer this simple question. We chose to do this play this year because, even though it takes place in the late 50’s, it brings up a lot of themes and issues that are so relevant today. It’s an excellent visualization of people’s prejudices and their subsequent actions. The play shines a light on the polarization of America today, with things like the controversies surrounding police shootings, protesting players in the NFL, people feeling Mr. Joe Alanes emboldened to speak about their views on race, whether or not others deem them as racist, the Director of Theatre growing division in our nation politically, and so many other issues. It has been interesting getting the actors to live inside these characters’ heads, and to not see themselves as a “prejudiced character,” for example, but rather someone who is speaking the truth, when everyone else is just afraid to (a view that a lot of people carry today). The students have to find some personal connection to their characters, whether they align with their views and values or not. The other interesting thing has been using two casts, 12 Angry Men and 12 Angry Women, as opposed to 12 Angry Jurors. I had the characters create their own blocking based on their characters and it was great to see how different each cast was, even sitting at opposite ends of the table from their male/female “counterparts”. The way that they attacked each other, supported each other, empathized with each other, among other things, was very different and they approached these themes of justice, race, prejudice, bigotry, and even sexism from a subtly, and sometimes completely, different point of view. So, you know what that means? … you should see both versions. Enjoy this fine cast of young men, oh, or women, and figure out, if you were a juror, where would your opinion, your life experience, your bias, lead you to vote? Guilty or Not Guilty? It might not be as simple as you think. Enjoy the show(s)!!
Male Cast Bios Marco Antonino Rimicci (Juror #8) Marco is so excited to be playing Juror 8 in 12 Angry Men. He has performed in several shows in the past including as the hand plant puppet in Little Shop of Horrors, Sam and Eric with his good friend Louis DiBernardo in Lord of the Flies, Romeo and Juliet, and Les Miserables. After taking some time off, Marco is ecstatic to make a big come back in his senior year. Marco wants to thank all his friends and family who've supported him so much. He also wants to thank Mr. Alanes for casting him- it is an honor to perform. Marco above all wants to thank his parents for always being at his side in all that he does. Enjoy the show!
Louis DiBernardo (Juror #3) Louis is excited to be playing Juror #3 in his last straight play here at Mater Dei. He has played a few roles here, most notably The Porter in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Although he is an actor, he has also worked practically every major and minor production in the theater program. He recently wanted to expand his area of expertise and joined the Monarch Television crew. Now he not only works for the theater program but also works rallies, masses, and several other events. He would like to thank his parents and friends for their continued support. It is the reason he continues to do theater. Louis hopes you all enjoy the show!
Nick Van Dalsem (Juror #10) Nick is very excited to be portraying Juror 10, Barney Stinson, in this year’s Advanced Theatre Arts play, 12 Angry Men. Previously, he has played the roles of Jack in Into the Woods, Thomas Putnam in the Crucible, Florizell in A Winter’s Tale, and Angelo in the Comedy of Errors. He is a member of Chambers Singers, Improv Comedy Club, Campus Ministry, the Dodgeball Club, and is the Junior Class President this year. He loves to sing, dab, and eat fine sugar cereals. Nick would like to thank his wonderful parents and sort of o.k. brothers for their support. He would also like to thank Mr. Alanes, Ms. Thomas, and Mr. Campbell for their work during this show.

Eddie Kerins (Juror #7) Edward is in absolute love with the fact that he could take part in such a fantastic play. He's landed major roles in productions such as servant #3 in Cinderella, background pirate in J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan!, and ice skater #5 in A Charlie Brown Christmas. Ok. Well, those didn’t really happen, but perhaps you saw him as Autolycus in Mater Dei’s performance of The Winter’s Tale? In his spare time he enjoys bird watching, admiring watercolors (the more water the better), and translating Homer's works into German. He truly hopes you enjoy the show! Michael Woodard (Juror #4) Michael is new to the theatre scene at Mater Dei. Although he is an active member of the filmmaking program, this will be his first play ever. With no prior drama experience, he auditioned at the last minute on a suggestion from a friend, got a role, and quickly became hooked on performing. He read 12 Angry Men in English class in seventh grade, and was intrigued at the prospect of actually playing one of the roles on stage four years later! Although Michael may lack experience, he is sure such a relevant and well-written play will be the perfect place to start. Other programs he is involved in at Mater Dei include tennis, NHS, and ASB.
Andrew Park (Juror #9) Andrew is really excited to be playing Juror 9, as his experience with acting isn't as extensive as the other cast members. Andrew has worked most aspects of technical theatre, including audio, lighting and stage work for a myriad of shows. Most of the shows he's worked were at his previous high school OCSA, where studied in the production and design conservatory. The new experience of learning acting and trying out what he's seen and worked on for years is incredibly exciting.
Daniel Mejia (Juror #5) A senior, Daniel Mejia is super excited to be playing Juror 5 in Mater Dei's production of 12 Angry Men. His previous experience in theatre includes acting in an ensemble role in A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream; aside from that, this is his first real show! While not attempting to act or usher, he sings with the Chamber Singers, is the current Student Director, participates in and runs all sorts of clubs, coaches volleyball at Saint John the Baptist, and tries to balance it all out. Daniel would like to thank his parents for providing him with love and support, his friends for supporting and helping him through his first true performance, Mr. Alanes for his direction, and the amazing duo, Mr. Melvin and Mr. Miller, for everything they do. He hopes you enjoy the show as much as he does!
Dario Rimicci (Juror #12) Dario is very excited to be playing the twelfth juror in this production of 12 Angry Men. He has been part of many plays and musicals in the past including playing the part of the Guard in Aladdin, Fa Zhou in Mulan, Scar in The Lion King, as an ensemble member in Into the Woods and the Crucible, and as understudy for Mysterious Man, and more. Dario loves the theatre program here at Mater Dei. He appreciates all the hard work this community puts into making the performances the best they can be. Dario would like to thank Mr. Alanes and Mr. Campbell for casting him in this show and giving him the opportunity to do what he loves most. Also, he would like to thank his parents for giving him life and supporting him in everything he does. Carson Alanes (Juror #11) Carson is pumped to be German in yet another Mater Dei production. Some of his other involvements include being in the Mater Dei Improv Troupe, Ping Pong Club, and Anime Club. He would like to thank the director of this show, Mr. Alanes (and Mrs. Alanes too, she's pretty chill), for physically giving him life when they didn't have to. He also wanted to thank Mr. Campbell for helping him improve his accent, being the moderator/advisor/godfather of improv, and owning Campbell’s Soup. He hopes you enjoy, or at least mildly like the show!
Sam Enriquez (Juror #2) Sam is very excited to be in this production. Normally he likes to work backstage and has only acted in one other production in his three years at Mater Dei. Sam loves this show and is happy to see you all enjoy it too. He doesn't play any sports but loves theatre and video games. He is very dedicated to learning all that he can while he is here. He is very thankful for this opportunity and can’t wait to see what next year holds.

Erik Doty (Juror #6) Erik is very happy to have his role in 12 Angry Men. He has been in the theater program at Mater Dei for two years now, having played Marshall Herrick in The Crucible. is very excited to participate in the theater events to come. Although fairly new to theater, Erik has been in Mater Dei performing arts since freshmen year, doing 2 years of choir preceding his time in theater.
Ryan McDermott (Clerk) Ryan is elated to be a part of this production of 12 Angry Men. He thanks all his friends, family and all the directors who have encouraged him to be a part of this wonderful program. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show everyone!
Female Cast Bios Alexandra Ruiz (Juror #8) This is Alexandra's 10th production here at Mater Dei. She is so incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to perform such a captivating show. Some of her favorite roles include Witch in Macbeth and Hermia in Midsummer Night's Dream. Other than theater, she enjoys writing and singing. She would like to thank her family for their constant love and support. She hopes everyone in this audience can transport back in time and enjoy this classic show.
Natalie Smale (Juror #3) Natalie is beyond excited to be playing Juror 3 in Mater Dei's 12 Angry Women. Some of her favorite past productions have been A Winter's Tale, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Macbeth, and Les Miserablès, as well as many others. When she's not at rehearsal or stressing out over college apps, Natalie spends her time baking outrageous amounts of cookies, drinking way too much coffee, and playing with her corgi, Macchiato. She would like to thank Mr. Alanes and Mr. Campbell for all of their support as well as her family and friends for being there for her, and would love to give Ms. Thomas a shout out for always being so amazing! She hopes you have as much fun watching the show as as she has had working on it!
Danika McKee (Juror #10) Danika is elated to take part in this production of 12 Angry Women as Juror 10. She has previously had ensemble roles in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Crucible, played First Gentleman and Servant #1 in The Winter’s Tale, and most recently, Emilia in The Comedy of Errors. Outside of theatre she enjoys participating in choir, playing piano, cooking exotic meals, road trips, and juggling. She would like to thank Ms. Thomas, Mr. Campbell, and Mr. Alanes for all of their hard work, dedication, and for inspiring her to continue her theatrical aspirations.
Daniella Arcila (Juror #7) Daniella is thrilled to be taking part in this production of 12 Angry Women. This will be Daniella’s sixth play with the Mater Dei theatre department, and probably the one she is most excited for. This is one of her favorite plays and one that she finds to be very relevant especially in society today, despite having been written in 1954. She first saw this play last year and was immediately enthralled and feels so thankful to have the opportunity to perform in it. Daniella is very grateful to be apart of this cast with so many wonderful actresses and is very thankful for their friendships. Daniella would like to thank her family and friends for all their support. She would also like to thank her wonderful teachers who have guided her. Alexis Rangell-Onwuegbuzia (Juror #4) Lexis is honored to be playing Juror #4 alongside such incredible, dedicated women. You may remember her as Antipholus of Ephesus (The Comedy of Errors), Hecate (Macbeth), or Fan (A Christmas Carol, South Coast Repertory). When she's not doing something related to theatre, she's probably making art on Photoshop or writing poetry; when she's not doing that, she's juggling college apps, praying for admission to Harvard, and keeping up with five AP classes; and if she's still not doing that, she might actually be sleeping for once! Lexis would like to thank her parents for their endless support; Mateo, Alyssa, Grace, Smale, Cera, Hannah, and Megan for being the best friends ever; Ms. Thomas, Mr. Campbell, and Mr. Alanes for their guidance and wisdom; and her sister MoniQue for being such an amazing assistant director. Maria Contreras (Juror #9) is excited to be a part of this year's Advanced Theatre Arts production. This is one of her first important roles; she was previously a part of the ensemble for Peter and the Starcatcher, but she mainly focuses her time in theatre backstage. She wants to thank Mr. Alanes for once again showing his incredible casting ability and wants to thank Mr. Campbell for being a great improv instructor. She would also like to thank Jacob Nguyen and Ms. Thomas for being understanding and working well with the actors.
Betty Pham (Juror #5) Betty is a junior at Mater Dei. She is very excited to be a part of 12 Angry Women, as this is her fourth play at Mater Dei. Her favorite role that she has played is Betty from The Crucible. Betty has loved working with her cast, crew, and teachers on this production. Aside from acting, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, shopping, and writing Yelp reviews for upand-coming trendy ice cream parlors. Betty also takes great pride in her extensive knowledge of pre-2010 Disney Channel Original Movies, as well as her ability to use Heely’s without falling. Lastly, she would like to thank her family and friends for their endless love and support.
Gwyneth Stolo (Juror #12) Gwyneth, a junior at Mater Dei, is so grateful to be playing the role of Juror 12 in this production of 12 Angry Women. Other shows Gwyneth has been a part of include Shakespeare's The Winter’s Tale as Antigonus, The Crucible, Peter and the Starcatchers, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She thoroughly enjoys the theatre program and receives a lot of great support from her family and friends. Gwyneth is a connoisseur of pasta, frequent concert-goer, and extreme dog lover. She hopes you enjoy the show!
Gwen Smith (Juror #11) Gwen is very excited to play the 11th Juror in our rendition of 12 Angry Jurors. Other characters she has had the opportunity to play include Rafiki from The Lion King, the ugly stepsister Prunella from Little Red Robin Hood and Alice in Wonderland. Along with acting, Gwen helped with Mater Dei theatre last year, including Thoroughly Modern Millie, Crucible, and Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale and Comedy Of Errors . Ever since she was little she has done as much as she could to be involved with the theatre. Many other plays she has been involved in she worked back stage, she was even able to be a stage
Maddie Mageean (Juror #2) Maddie is a theatre-loving, movie-obsessed girl who is very excited for this showing of 12 Angry Women. She hopes you enjoy the quirks of her character and find this performance entertaining. The cast and crew are her favorite people because they worked so hard to make this show as amazing as it is today. Thanks to her mom and dad for helping her in her theatre goals. Juror 2 is a woman of few words and Maddie can relate. Enjoy the show!
Leah Sparks (Juror #6) Leah is in her junior year here at Mater Dei and is excited to play Juror 6 in this production of 12 Angry Women. She has been a part of the theater program for all three years and has loved every minute of it. Working with her peers in class and rehearsals is always a fun and informative experience for her. They are always supporting and encouraging each other with laughter and memories. She would like to thank her parents and grandparents for always supporting her throughout her acting endeavors. They are the ones who got her into acting classes and have taken her to the many plays she has seen over the years. She would also like to thank Mr. Alanes and Mr. Campbell for their work and instruction throughout the production, they did an amazing job. She is excited to perform and hopes you enjoy the show!
Grace Snider (Guard) Grace Snider is thrilled to be playing the role of guard. At Mater Dei, she has been involved in every show since sophomore year, mostly on tech, but she also performed in the ensemble in Les Miserables and Macbeth. She has also been in numerous community theater shows and is so excited to be back onstage. She would like to thank her family and friends for being so supportive and also Mr. Alanes for giving her lines this show. Enjoy the show!

She first saw this play last year and was immediately enthralled and feels so thankful to have the opportunity to perform in it. Daniella is very grateful to be apart of this cast with so many wonderful actresses and is very thankful for their friendships. Daniella would like to thank her family and friends for all their support. She would also like to thank her wonderful teachers who have guided her. Alexis Rangell-Onwuegbuzia (Juror #4) Lexis is honored to be playing Juror #4 alongside such incredible, dedicated women. You may remember her as Antipholus of Ephesus (The Comedy of Errors), Hecate (Macbeth), or Fan (A Christmas Carol, South Coast Repertory). When she's not doing something related to theatre, she's probably making art on Photoshop or writing poetry; when she's not doing that, she's juggling college apps, praying for admission to Harvard, and keeping up with five AP classes; and if she's still not doing that, she might actually be sleeping for once! Lexis would like to thank her parents for their endless support; Mateo, Alyssa, Grace, Smale, Cera, Hannah, and Megan for being the best friends ever; Ms. Thomas, Mr. Campbell, and Mr. Alanes for their guidance and wisdom; and her sister MoniQue for being such an amazing assistant director. Maria Contreras (Juror #9) is excited to be a part of this year's Advanced Theatre Arts production. This is one of her first important roles; she was previously a part of the ensemble for Peter and the Starcatcher, but she mainly focuses her time in theatre backstage. She wants to thank Mr. Alanes for once again showing his incredible casting ability and wants to thank Mr. Campbell for being a great improv instructor. She would also like to thank Jacob Nguyen and Ms. Thomas for being understanding and working well with the actors.
Betty Pham (Juror #5) Betty is a junior at Mater Dei. She is very excited to be a part of 12 Angry Women, as this is her fourth play at Mater Dei. Her favorite role that she has played is Betty from The Crucible. Betty has loved working with her cast, crew, and teachers on this production. Aside from acting, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, shopping, and writing Yelp reviews for upand-coming trendy ice cream parlors. Betty also takes great pride in her extensive knowledge of pre-2010 Disney Channel Original Movies, as well as her ability to use Heely’s without falling. Lastly, she would like to thank her family and friends for their endless love and support.
Gwyneth Stolo (Juror #12) Gwyneth, a junior at Mater Dei, is so grateful to be playing the role of Juror 12 in this production of 12 Angry Women. Other shows Gwyneth has been a part of include Shakespeare's The Winter’s Tale as Antigonus, The Crucible, Peter and the Starcatchers, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She thoroughly enjoys the theatre program and receives a lot of great support from her family and friends. Gwyneth is a connoisseur of pasta, frequent concert-goer, and extreme dog lover. Gwen Smith (Juror #11) Gwen is very excited to play the 11th Juror in our rendition of 12 Angry Jurors. Other characters she has had the opportunity to play include Rafiki from The Lion King, the ugly stepsister Prunella from Little Red Robin Hood and Alice in Wonderland. Along with acting, Gwen helped with Mater Dei theatre last year, including Thoroughly Modern Millie, Crucible, and Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale and Comedy Of Errors . Maddie Mageean (Juror #2) Maddie is a theatre-loving, movie-obsessed girl who is very excited for this showing of 12 Angry Women. She hopes you enjoy the quirks of her character and find this performance entertaining. The cast and crew are her favorite people because they worked so hard to make this show as amazing as it is today. Thanks to her mom and dad for helping her in her theatre goals. Juror 2 is a woman of few words and Maddie can relate. Enjoy the show!
Leah Sparks (Juror #6) Leah is in her junior year here at Mater Dei and is excited to play Juror 6 in this production of 12 Angry Women. She has been a part of the theater program for all three years and has loved every minute of it. Working with her peers in class and rehearsals is always a fun and informative experience for her. They are always supporting and encouraging each other with laughter and memories. She would like to thank her parents and grandparents for always supporting her throughout her acting endeavors. They are the ones who got her into acting classes and have taken her to the many plays she has seen over the years. She would also like to thank Mr. Alanes and Mr. Campbell for their work and instruction throughout the production, they did an amazing job. She is excited to perform and hopes you enjoy the show!
Grace Snider (Guard) Grace Snider is thrilled to be playing the role of guard. At Mater Dei, she has been involved in every show since sophomore year, mostly on tech, but she also performed in the ensemble in Les Miserables and Macbeth. She has also been in numerous community theater shows and is so excited to be back onstage. She would like to thank her family and friends for being so supportive and also Mr. Alanes for giving her lines this show. Enjoy the show!
