DAR R E L L N E SBIT T / M IN N E DO SA T R IBU N E Focusing on implementing wood trim around a number of windows on the front of the house, an employee of ChiselPEAK Contracting of Minnedosa worked away under ideal weather conditions on Friday, Sept. 25, to advance the home renovation project on 5th Avenue SW. As with farmers, rain can significantly interfere with home renovation projects, halting progress, damaging exposed materials, and causing costly delays.

Minnedosa voters will be choosing a mayor and six councillors at the ballot box on October 28, after every seat was filled by acclamation in 2022. Incumbent Ken Cameron faces Thomas Mathews in the mayoral race. Eight candidates are seeking six council seats, including incumbent councillors Grant Butler, Tom

Dowsett and Robert Marks. The other candidates are Glen “Gordo” Gordon, Jan Marie Graham, Lars Heino, Kyle Moffat, and Wyatt Rapsky. Their responses to questions from The Minnedosa Tribune show different approaches to flood protection, infrastructure spending, recreation and the town’s future growth. Those elected will serve four-year terms. Cameron, who was born and raised in the Minnedosa commu-

nity, said he is running again to help the town move forward. He named the new housing development, daycare and assisted living project among his priorities. Cameron pointed to 12 years as a Rolling River School Division trustee, including eight as board chair, and his service with the Manitoba School Boards Association as experience in governance. Mathews has called for more public discussion of the campground redevelopment. In a Sept. 10

post online, he urged council to hold public forums outside its regular meetings before committing funds and called at that time for a final decision to wait until after the election. He later acknowledged that the work may be necessary while continuing to seek a clearer explanation of its technical and financial case. Mathews had not responded to the Tribune’s candidate questions as of press time. Butler has lived and worked in Minnedosa since 1984 and is now

retired there. He said he is seeking another council term to give back to the community and help move the town forward. Among the concerns he identified were flooding, infrastructure upgrades, silt buildup, retaining medical staff and keeping the emergency room open. Butler said he has served on many local boards and organizations and wants Minnedosa to remain an active, growing community.
