DAR R E L L N E SBIT T / M IN N E DO SA T R IBU N E It’s not only school students walking or biking down sidewalks in Minnedosa on a weekday morning, as often mothers with young children nestled warmly within a stroller and the family pet in tow, enjoy early morning exercise and conversation. Lately the weather has been ideal, with fingers crossed the temperatures will hold until at least Halloween.

Motorized boating on Clear Lake has ended for the season after Riding Mountain National Park’s aquatic invasive species (AIS) inspection station closed following Oct. 12. Parks Canada staff completed more than 6,200 watercraft inspec-

tions this season, the agency said in an Oct. 9 update. Inspectors checked 618 motorized and trailered boats and 5,649 non-motorized watercrafts, including canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards. Staff also performed 514 decontaminations. The busiest day was June 6, with 223 inspections. With the station closed, motorized, and trailered boats are no longer allowed on Clear Lake. Non-

motorized watercraft may still be used with a valid permit, provided they meet program requirements. The inspection program is aimed at stopping the spread of zebra mussels, which are already established in Clear Lake. Zebra mussels were first confirmed in Lake Winnipeg in 2013. Parks Canada began monitoring Clear Lake in 2011 and made water-

craft inspections mandatory in the park in 2015. Inspectors completed more than 2,300 inspections that first year. In 2022, a water sample taken at Boat Cove tested positive for zebra mussel DNA. In November 2023, Parks Canada removed 48 live zebra mussels from Boat Cove, the first confirmed in the park. More were found on docks and infrastructure

in 2024 and 2025. Parks Canada now says zebra mussels are reproducing in Clear Lake. The agency’s focus has shifted to keeping them out of the park’s other lakes. Testing has not found zebra mussels in nearby waters, including Lake Audy, Lake Katherine, Moon Lake, and Whirlpool Lake.
