Child care project set to break ground this fall
Province confirms a projected fall start date for the long-anticipated new 74-space child care facility in Minnedosa

A long-anticipated child care project in Minnedosa has taken a significant step forward, with provincial officials confirming a construction timeline that could see work begin this fall.
On April 27, Mayor Ken Cameron, Deputy Mayor Grant Butler, and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Danniele Carriere met with Tracy Schmidt to discuss the proposed 74-space child care facility.
According to the Town of Minnedosa, the project will proceed under the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement, with construction expected to begin this fall and completion anticipated by the end of 2027.
The facility is planned for Armitage Avenue near the Rolling River School Division office. While the Town’s role has focused on advocacy and land provision, the project itself is being delivered through provincial and school division partnerships.
“The shortage is very significant,” said CAO Danniele Carriere. “There is high demand for spaces.”
That shortage is already affecting the local economy. Carriere noted that families have turned down employment opportunities and relocation to Minnedosa due to the lack of available child care.
The Rolling River School Division has been involved in planning since 2023, working with Manitoba’s Early Learning and
Child Care Division as part of the School-Based Child Care Centre Expansion Project.
“Childcare in Minnedosa is so important for families and the community,” said Superintendent Jason Cline. “The Division looks forward to supporting this project throughout the process,”
