Demolition of the Minnedosa District Arena was initiated on Tuesday, June 9 with the front of the building erased from the skyline by the end of the week. The structure, which first opened in 1947, was constructed from the elements of a relocated military airplane hangar. The downtown arena was decommissioned in 2023 when the community opened the doors to Sunrise Credit Union Centre. As crews continue work, the local landmark will eventually be erased, but not its legacy.
Minnedosa to host 2027 Manitoba 55+ Games

Minnedosa will welcome athletes, volunteers, families and supporters from across the province next June after being selected to host the 2027 Manitoba 55+ Games.
The announcement was made during the Opening Ceremonies of the 2026 Manitoba 55+ Games in Morden, Stanley and Winkler,
where Minnedosa representatives officially accepted the opportunity to host the provincial event.
The 2027 Games will take place June 8, 9 and 10, 2027.
The Manitoba 55+ Games are presented by Active Aging in Manitoba and the Manitoba 55+ Games. Active Aging in Manitoba describes the Games as the province’s largest annual multi-sport event for older adults, combining active competition with a social
and entertaining experience. Core events include golf, track, bocce ball, arts and crafts, horseshoes, pickleball, five-pin bowling and lawn bowling.
The attached event release says the Games bring together more than 1,000 participants, hundreds of volunteers and many spectators each year for three days of friendly competition and celebration. Recent host communities include Brandon in 2024,
Steinbach in 2025, and Morden, Winkler, and the Rural Municipality of Stanley in 2026.
Participants compete in a wide range of age-friendly events, from golf, pickleball, slo-pitch, swimming and track to cards, Scrabble, floor curling and other activities.
The Games also include social and cultural highlights, including an evening concert and an athletes’ banquet.
For Minnedosa, the Games rep-
resent more than three days of sport. They are expected to bring visitors, spending and attention to the community, including local accommodations, restaurants, businesses and recreation facilities.
“This is an incredible opportunity for Minnedosa,” said Danniele Carriere, CAO of Minnedosa.
