Letter from our CEO Supporting physicians in Shelby County
The Memphis Medical Society has been the foundation of organized medicine for Shelby County physicians since 1876. Together with Tennessee Medical Association, we advocate, unite and support physicians across Tennessee as well as their patients. Over the last five years, we have focused on expanding our member advantages to include more social and networking opportunities, as well as financial and mental health programs throughout all stages of a physician's career. Along with these new oportunities for our members, we are always looking for partners in these projects. Partners interested in an all-physician audience, as well as offering true value to our members.
We see these relationships as a win for everyone. Please reach out if you know of a business that would benefit our members. Legislative Wins Impacting You Tort Reform – We led the charge for state laws in 2008 and 2011 that created Tennessee’s current favorable medical liability climate and saves Tennessee doctors an average of more than $14,000 per physician per year compared to pre2008 liability insurance premiums. We continue to defend those gains in court and the General Assembly.
Balance Billing – TMA leads a coalition of hospital-based physicians to protect patients from narrow networks. TMA is supporting a provider-friendly bill from Senator Bo Watson and Representative Robin Smith. Their vision promotes a fair independent resolution process, while holding harmless a patient who has done their due diligence. The bill is
based off Georgia’s successful model. The bill encourages payers to offer fair in-network rates to providers and keep out-of-network and non-participating facilities to a minimum or be forced into loser pays arbitration.
