Gratitude to Veterans, gratitude for our freedom On a sunny September 17, 1944, the sky was full of planes and paratroopers jumping out of their aircraft. All along the Market Garden route, the same scene was played out. The bridges across the great rivers had to be reconquered, so the allied forces could advance from the south toward Arnhem. The departure from South England had been postponed several times already. That day was the day. The ﬁrst hours of the Battle of Arnhem went very well. Along three routes, the allied forces attempted to reach the Arnhem road bridge (John Frost bridge). Along the northern route, troops were met with heavy resistance, the route through Oosterbeek (Utrechtseweg) was halted at the outskirts of Arnhem (Lombok/Elisabeth Gashuis). The southern route was successful. John Frost managed to reach the bridge with his men and defend it for several days. When no support showed up, and supplies and ammunition were running low, the paratroopers were forced to regroup in Oosterbeek. In Oosterbeek, at what is now the Airborne Museum, a horseshoeshaped area called the perimeter was defended against the Germans. At the time, this building served as headquarters for General Urquhart. Civilians supplied information and tended to the wounded. While the German resistance was constantly increasing, the British and Polish forces initially managed to bravely hold out, but because support from the south never showed up, they eventually had to retreat across the Lower Rhine. Many were injured or killed.

Gratitude to veterans

In this time of many wars and refugee streams, we are reminded what sacriices were made to win our freedom. Freedom is not a given, and it could be lost before we know it. Realising this, we cannot hold dearly enough to the memories of the sacriices that the British, Polish and Canadians resting on the Airborne cemetery, have made for us.

Park ‘Hartenstein’, Oosterbeek The work of art was made by the internationally renowned Dutch artist Jits Bakker. (6 July 1937 Renkum – 5 June 2014 Wageningen) ‘We ‘ill meet again’ , the 19ft high bronze statue, symbolizes the liberation by Airborne parachutists, who were being welcomed with open arms by the previously oppressed civilians. This monumental sculpture was made to honour the veterans who experienced the airborne operation in history: Market Garden, September 1944.

W słoneczny dzień, 17 września 1944 roku, niebo było pełne samolotów i spadochroniarzy wyskakujących ze swoich maszyn. Na całej trasie Market Garden rozgrywała się ta sama scena. Należało ponownie przejąć kontrolę nad mostami nad wielkimi rzekami, tak aby wojska alianckie mogły ruszyć z południa w kierunku Arnhem. Wylot z południa Anglii odkładano już kilkakrotnie. Ale właśnie wtedy nadszedł ten dzień. Pierwsze godziny bitwy pod Arnhem minęły bardzo dobrze. Wojska alianckie usiłowały trzema szlakami dotrzeć do mostu w Arnhem (obecnie mostu im. Johna Frosta). Wzdłuż szlaku północnego żołnierze napotkali na duży opór, a drogę prowadzącą przez Oosterbeek (Utrechtseweg) wstrzymano na obrzeżach Arnhem (Lombok/Elisabeth Gashuis). Na trasie południowej odniesiono sukces. John Frost wraz ze swoimi ludźmi zdołał dotrzeć do mostu i bronić go przez kilka dni. Kiedy nie pojawiło się wsparcie, a zaopatrzenie i amunicja były na wyczerpaniu, spadochroniarze musieli przegrupować się w Oosterbeek. W Oosterbeek, w miejscu znanym obecnie jako Airborne Museum, broniono przed Niemcami obszaru w kształcie podkowy zwanego obwodem. Budynek ten służył wówczas jako kwatera główna generała Urquharta. Obecnie, w czasach wielu wojen i rzeki uchodźców, należy przypominać, jakie oiary poniesiono, aby wywalczyć naszą wolność. Wolność nie jest dana raz na zawsze i możemy ją stracić, zanim się spostrzeżemy. Kiedy zdamy sobie z tego sprawę, wiemy, że nie jesteśmy w stanie oddać wystarczającego hołdu oiarom, jakie ponieśli dla nas Brytyjczycy, Polacy i Kanadyjczycy spoczywający na cmentarzu Airborne.
